DUI claims lives of Pray4Clay Warriors 2 Rockville women hosting vendor fair Contributed report
GOOCHLAND COUNTY — Two Rockville women died Sunday, March 1, after their car was struck from behind by another vehicle in Goochland County. According to Sgt. Steve M. Vick of the Virginia State Police, the crash took place around 8:07 p.m. on Interstate 64 westbound at the 170.3 mile marker. Trooper B. Patenaude is investigating the crash. The trooper’s investigation revealed that a 2012 Nissan Sentra was traveling west on I-64 in the right lane when
it was struck in the rear by a 2011 Hyundai Sonota that was travelling at a high rate of speed. After being struck, the Nissan ran off the road to the right and struck a tree. The Hyundai then struck a 2008 Honda Fit; the Hyundai then struck the guardrail. Sheila P. McCowan, 51, the driver of the 2012 Nissan, was wearing a seatbelt. She died at the scene. The rear seat passenger, Yolanda F. McCowan, 49, who was wearing a seatbelt, also died at the scene. A front seat passenger was
not injured. The driver of the Honda, David W. Tillack of Kents Store, was not injured in the crash. The driver of the 2011 Hyundai, Andrew N. Chavis, 24, of Goochland County was transported to MCV hospital with serious injuries. Chavis was charged with driving under the influence. The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team assisted with the crash which is still under investigation. Vick said that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

OOCHLAND — Second Union Rosenwald School (SURS) on Hadensville-Fife Road has been a hive of activity is recent weeks, hosting students from across the county and sharing the rich history of the building and grounds. On Feb. 6, over 160 sixth graders from Goochland Middle School visited the former school, which was one of 5,000 constructed across the South in the early 20th century to educate black children. Also visiting the school last month were students from Byrd Elementary School and Elk Hill School. During their visit, students were treated to
a presentation and skit from Paula and James Whitfield from the Booker T. Washington National Monument in Franklin County. To SURS Foundation president Calvin Hopkins, the way the students responded to the history lessons offered during their visit was “outstanding.” Hopkins and his fellow board members have been working since 2005 to find a way to a turn the former school into a museum. All 10 Rosenwald schools in Goochland County, as well as Central High School, the county’s former black high school, will be represented in the museum. “Everyone is reared toward that goal,” Hopkins said, and the hope is that they will be see Rosenwald > page 4

When cold weather finds us inside looking outside, watching our feathered friends can bring so much pleasure. Birds have several ways of adapting to cold weather. Most birds build up fat reserves before winter weather sets in, when food is abundant. They can fluff out their feathers to create air pockets for insulation. They can shiver to
generate more heat in frigid temperatures. Also, they can roost in groups to share body heat. Birds also obtain the energy to keep warm by eating more. To get the most out of watching birds at your feeder, and to give the birds a boost during cold weather, here are a few suggestions: Food and feeders Placement of your feeder is important. Snow days led Career and technical fields to history lesson help in capturing the future By Jim Ridolphi
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Of all the things the recent winter weather has brought my way – a disrupted schedule, frozen hands and feet, a challenging daily drive to and from work — most have been crummy. There was, however, one unexpectedly positive thing that I gained during the last time snow and ice visited: a much-needed history lesson. Allow me to explain. As anyone who has ever lived in a small house knows, there is really no such thing as doing anything “by yourself.” So, when nasty weather forces my husband and me to spend the day inside, anything he happens to be watching on television can be heard throughout the house. Lately, he’s been watching a lot of World War II programs on the History Channel, which means two things. The first is that, on any given day, it sounds as if our living room is being shelled by the German army. The second, and far more beneficial thing about all-day war documentary marathons, is that I have been able to learn — even from across the house — far more about the events of WWII than I ever

knew before. Having two grandfathers who fought in WWII, the events of that conflict have always been a part of my family history, but I will be the first to admit that I knew shamefully little about the specific details of anything outside of their experiences. Thanks to several snow-bound hours in front of the television last week, however, all of that began to change. Hearing the stories told by veterans, many of whom have now passed on, offered a lesson not only in the way the war unfolded, but also in the incredible determination, valor and strength displayed by those who served. As the snow fell outside and the bullets flew on the television, I found myself being drawn further and further in, wanting to know more and to understand. I also found myself amazed, again and again, by the lives our WWII veterans have lived. As we all know, even the most exciting events in world history tend to fade from memory eventually, taking with them the lessons learned and the incredible individual acts of bravery and sacrifice. But being reminded of the events see History > page 7

cross the nation, school systems are initiating or expanding career and technical training programs that provide students real life hands-on training that result in job-ready graduates. The programs are providing an integral element in the educational wheel, allowing career options for students who might have, in past years, slipped through the educational cracks. It’s a philosophy many of our area school systems have embraced for many years, and the value of technical education was never lost on some local systems. Gov. Terry McAuliffe recently announced that Hanover County would receive a $100,000 grant to research and develop a regional CTE Governor’s School. It’s an opportunity for local students to benefit from expanded and specialized programs. It’s also intended to provide a model for other districts in the state. It’s another positive step in the right direction when it comes to options that serve all of our students. In times when shrinking educational dollars often get the headlines, CTE courses are a clear signal that
opportunities for our children are on the increase … and area school systems have their fingers on that pulse. In another initiative, many area school systems have instituted College Academies that offer students the opportunity to earn college credit while attending high school. The program had its roots in Goochland in a partnership with J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, and enrollees have the chance to graduate with a high school diploma in addition to a two-year Associate’s Degree from college. The advantages to the academy type programs come in many forms, the most obvious being the savings available to parents who take advantage of the program. Programs like the academy and the CTE pilot also display a willingness of local systems to engage the community in efforts to identify meaningful and relevant courses of study. Accomplishing this requires a partnership between the local business community, educators, elected leaders and students. CTE is a prime example of collaborative education that depends on local businesses to provide the mentoring and technical support necessary to ensure success for the students who pack the classrooms.
And it’s a win-win situation. When local systems produce students who meet local demands, the community wins in keeping their best resources close to home. A vibrant and active CTE program also invigorates a business climate that thrives on comprehensive training and availability of qualified, well-trained employees. With the help of local community colleges, area business leaders and visionary educators, our youth are exposed to endless opportunities that seemed impossible only years ago. Expanding programs mean education is better suited to serve all its students, and recognizes that exceptional comes in many forms. Tomorrow’s leaders are not only enrolled in college preparatory courses. A well-rounded system prepares all of them for a future with promise and hope. In tight budgetary times when dollars are at a premium, it’s also reassuring to note that local school systems don’t lose sight of their priorities. The creation of a CTE Governor’s School is ongoing proof that educators remain focused on designing curricula that meets the needs of a constantly changing student body. And that’s peace of mind that money can’t buy.
Letters to the Editor Show support for law enforcement by shining a light of appreciation In January of this year a retired police officer in Virginia Beach thought it would be a good gesture to honor the active law enforcement officers by suggesting that citizens display on the front of their homes a blue light to show their appreciation for those officers. Recently, the City of Petersburg embraced the same idea. It would be a good idea for the residents in Goochland County to pick up this gesture to honor our own local law enforcement officers. As a police officer, while on patrol I’m sure it would
be heartwarming to see a blue light shining to indicate the appreciation of the citizens of Goochland for their profession. Also, while answering a call, whether it might be an accident or a crime, the blue light would indicate the wish of well-being and safety to that particular officer. As I found out, Home Depot sells these blue lights for less than $3 apiece. Also, Lowe’s sells a bright blue fluorescent light that lasts 4,000 hours for less than $6 apiece. Birds continued from > 7 to eat, but create a challenge for pests. Or, when opening a suet cake, remove the wrapper but leave the suet in the plastic container. Then place it in the holder, and only one side is available to birds, making it easy for clinging birds to eat but harder for starlings or pests to devour. Although it may be difficult in winter, providing a water source is important for birds, and also will enhance your viewing pleasure. Many people throw bread out for the birds. Birds will
eat bread but it doesn’t provide any of the nutrition they need so you aren’t doing them any favors. Moldy bread is unhealthy for birds. What about squirrels? Squirrels are a nuisance and, besides eating all the bird food, they also can destroy a birdfeeder. Expensive squirrel-proof containers are not always the best investment. There are many remedies and tricks to combat the squirrels but there is only one way to eliminate them that doesn’t involve a weapon. The best investment you can make before you buy any food or containers is a

squirrel-proof feeder stand. These are available at wild bird specialty stores and they really do work. The people who make them know exactly how far a squirrel can climb, jump or hurl itself from a tree, so it really is worth the cost to start with a good feeder pole system. A good pole system may cost more in the beginning, but it will last for many, many years. And in the long run it is cheaper than feeding all those squirrels and replacing chewed up feeders. Part of the perfect pole system includes a squirrel baffle that really works. Squirrels absolutely cannot climb
around it to get to your feeders. Or, for a few dollars more, you may purchase a raccoon baffle, because squirrel baffles don’t apply to raccoons. Only a raccoon baffle will stop a hungry raccoon. Once you start feeding the birds, stay consistent. Birds will become accustomed to eating at your feeder. Keep your feeders clean throughout each season. Watching the birds at your feeder is very rewarding. You will be surprised to see newcomers at your feeder during spring and fall migration. You’ll come to recognize the regulars.
