He also stressed that it isn’t just about the person delivering the speech. “There are so many things I’ve learned from other people,” Corbin said. “It definitely takes a lot of people supporting you — my mom and my teachers have been a very big help in the process.”

Garden Fest continued from >1 By registering online, those attending the event will be able to find out immediately if the classes they want to attend are available and get confirmation of enrollment. The speed of the online registration process increases the chances of getting into these events, which are limited by space and the number of people they can accommodate.

Classes and workshops Once again, Spring Garden Fest will feature educational opportunities on a variety of subjects of concern to gardeners, with classes covering both broad topics and special areas of interest. There are many classes devoted to planning and managing a home garden, including general subjects such as organic gardening, pest management, weed control, pruning and soil improvement. Other classes cover more specific topics: growing and using scented geraniums; growing fun, uncommon edibles; incorporating fragrant plants into the garden; and propagating native plants. Two classes will cover creating specific types of spaces: an historic garden and a native meadow where a lawn once grew. Interested in creating garden structures or materials in a hands-on workshop? This

year’s Garden Fest offers sessions on making hypertufa pots, building trellises and garden tents, propagating moss, and creating a succulent dish garden. To see the complete listing of all classes and workshops, along with more detailed descriptions of each, visit www. gpmga.org/springgardenfest. htm. Don’t have time to attend classes or workshops? There is no charge to enjoy the rest of what Spring Garden Fest has to offer. Watch any of the demonstrations on various gardening topics or stroll the beautiful landscaping and educational gardens at Reynolds. Stop by the Master Gardeners’ tent with your questions about gardening or to learn more about the organization and its activities. Over the past 11 years, Spring Garden Fest has become noted for its selection of quality plants at comparatively low prices. Both Reynolds horticulture students and the GoochlandPowhatan Master Gardeners will hold their annual plant sales, with other vendors offering garden-related products and services. There will be a holding area for purchases while attendees continue to enjoy the day. Lunches will be available for purchase at Spring Garden Fest, or those taking part may bring their own and enjoy a picnic on the grounds at Reynolds.

Registration Because space is limited in all of the classes and workshops, early registration is strongly recommended to ensure a seat. A $10 fee covers all classes and workshops, but you must register to attend them. (Some workshops have an additional fee for materials.) This year it’s easier than ever to register early, using one of three methods: Go to www.gpmga.org/ springgardenfest.htm and pay the fee using either a major credit or debit card. From the website, print the registration form and follow the instructions for payment and mailing. Call the Goochland Extension Office at (804) 5565841 and request a registration form via email. The deadline for early registration is April 17. If you miss the deadline, it is possible to register and pay for classes and workshops at the door, if space is still available. Registration on the day of the event will be $12, plus any fees for workshop materials. (Note: Fees are not refundable, and the festival will be held regardless of the weather).

NOTICE OF PROPOSED REAL PROPERTY TAX INCREASE

The County of Goochland, Virginia proposes to increase property tax levies, while keeping the tax rate unchanged at $0.53 per $100 of assessed value. 1. Assessment Increase: Total assessed value of real property, excluding additional assessments due to new construction or improvements to property, exceeds last year's total assessed value of real property by 1.2 percent. 2. Lowered Rate Necessary to Offset Increased Assessment: The tax rate which would levy the same amount of real estate tax as last year, when multiplied by the new total assessed value of real estate with the exclusions mentioned above, would be $0.524 per $100 of assessed value. This rate will be known as the "lowered tax rate." 3. Effective Rate Increase: The County of Goochland proposes to adopt a tax rate of $0.53 per $100 of assessed value. The difference between the lowered tax rate and the proposed rate would be $0.006 per $100, or 1.2 percent. This difference will be known as the "effective tax rate increase."

Never a good excuse By Roslyn Ryan Editor

W

e’ve all heard them, the excuses for why someone got behind the wheel despite being impaired by alcohol or drugs. They had only had “a couple of drinks.” They didn’t have any other way to get home. They didn’t think they’d had enough to be really “messed up.” Thousands of people have probably told themselves these very things, shortly before contributing to the thousands of

On March 1, two sisters from Rockville were killed in a wreck on I-64 when a man who had allegedly been drinking plowed into the back of their car.

Their deaths will be counted among the thousands who die annually from drunk driving, all of whom died a preventable death thanks to one terrible decision. Having been hit by a drunk driver, I can attest to the fact that the trauma does not quickly fade. It is one thing, after all, to fall victim to an accident, an unfortunate twist of fate that could not have been prevented. To be the victim of a drunk driving accident, however, is to know that your life was upended by someone who had a choice to make — and chose to cause injury or worse. For those of us who have never lost a loved one to a drunk driving accident, it is surely impossible to imagine the anguish, the agonizing questions that remain and the lingering anger. For the families of Sheila and Yolanda McGowan, the two Goochland women killed in that tragic crash on March 1, the wonderful memories of the women will forever be intertwined with the horrific and violent way they were taken. The very best we can hope is that their story might somehow inspire someone out there — someone who has a choice to make about whether to drink and drive — to make the right one.

Recalling day trips gone by By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

As a child, I often thought my family took day trips because we couldn’t afford overnight accommodations. We had our share of family vacations usually in weeklong doses, but the interim months were filled with day trips. For some reason, day trips lost their appeal for me when I started having kids and quickly realized that too many hours in a car and small children is not a good combination. On reflection, the old day trips don’t seem so bad now. On countless occasions, my father and mother would pack us up for a day trip to the beach, mountains or some unique state park. The days were long, busy and packed with miles. We often stayed late and arrived home in the wee hours after a full day of day tripping. We are, indeed, fortunate to live in a state where day trips offer an endless array of adventure, heri-

tage and historical opportunities to discover, most of them only a day trip away. And with spring in the air, it might be time to pack up your family and head out on an Old Dominion adventure. The results may surprise you. With my three kids, I’ve found the one-day mission has many untold advantages, and the singular focus of a one day trip is a good fit for our travels. We often pack up for Williamsburg, Charlottesville or the beach and make a one-day outing. It brings back fond memories from my childhood where picnic lunches were highlighted by my grandmother’s famous fried chicken, deviled eggs and a jug of the best sweet tea in the world. Our one-day outings almost always involved a picnic. I must admit the picnic lunch is a bridge too far for my group, and just organizing three kids for a trip proves difficult enough without the burden of preparing food for the

day, so we usually head out without the picnic basket. But, the joys of day tripping do not depend on packed lunches. The adventure focused on the journey, and the whirlwind schedule that always accompanies our trips. I’m not sure what parameters determine the difference between a day trip and a vacation, besides the obvious time factor, but there’s something about a day trip that draws my family closer together. In a world where I’m often competing with electronic devices for attention and guidance, the day trip presents a unique opportunity to do things just the way we did them when I was young. Sure, the car is nicer, the roads much improved and the signs along the road, mostly gone. But, a day in the car certainly allows for conversation, interaction and a family engaged, something we sometimes miss with iPads drawn at the ready. The possibilities are endless. see Day trips > 13

The Goochland High School varsity baseball team got on the field for a practice for the first time this season earlier this week. The bad weather and school closings forced the team to move their practices indoors. Shown are returning players from last year’s team, Cory Alexander (above), one of the Bulldogs most dangerous base stealers, and Tanner Bradshaw, who returns to the Bulldogs starting rotation in 2015. The Bulldogs varsity baseball team was originally set to face Fluvanna County in a scrimmage on the road on March 12, but play was out of the question due to field conditions after melting snow left it soaked and soggy. The Bulldogs are scheduled to open the season Monday with a home game against Louisa County, That game also is subject to change, depending on field conditions.
