The battle of Okinawa

Veteran looks back on role in historic invasion Benedictine’s Father Adrian Harmening was just 18 when he took part in the bloodiest battle of the Pacific campaign By Roslyn Ryan Editor

O

fficially called Operation Iceberg, the invasion of Okinawa that began on April 1, 1945, was striking in its savagery and pivotal in bringing World War II to its eventual conclusion just over five months later. It was the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific campaign, an 82-day nightmare during which the U.S. would lose over 12,000 men. For Goochland resident Father Adrian Harmening, who would be among the first American troops to hit the beach during the invasion, it meant a sudden end to a boyhood spent in a rural Pennsylvania town and a searing introduction to the adult world. As the nation marks the 70th anniversary of the start of the invasion, Harmening said his experiences on Okinawa would undoubtedly shape the man — and the priest — he would become. see Okinawa > 5

Alumni will be on hand to share their memories of Rosenwald school By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Goochland’s Second Union Rosenwald School (SURS) will partner with the county’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department to host an Ice Cream Social from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, offering community members a chance to learn more about SURS’ mission and see the ongoing efforts to preserve the historic space. Set up throughout the South in the early 20th century, Rosenwald schools served to help educate black students barred from receiving a public education. Second Union remained in operation from 1918 until 1959. The school was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and efforts are underway to turn the structure into a museum dedicated to the history of African-American education in Goochland. The aim of the school’s preservation effort, organizers say, see Social > 3

ENTERTAINING: Recipes, Tips and Advice

April 2, 2015

Ask Fern A Dear Fern, As I celebrate the arrival of spring, I am planning a brunch for a few of my closest friends. Can you offer some ideas for a spring-themed menu? Dear Welcoming Spring, The ideal spread for your brunch proudly marches right off of page 1 in the Goochland Woman’s Club cookbook, “50 Cheers!” and onto your best china (see menu and recipes, below)! Your guests will feel welcomed being greeted with a fancy glass of Prosecco while arriving

and mingling. Next comes the fresh fruit compote, then a divine Quiche Lorraine, accompanied by a colorful roasted asparagus, followed by delicious zucchini bread. This menu, “Rite of Spring,” lives every bit up to its name. Pretty and dainty, it also takes the pleasure of sticking to the ribs as well! Such an unforgettable meal deserves a memorable mealtime. You’ll want your table to set the stage for just the right ambiance. For an enchanting spring tablescape, think Robin’s egg blue, leaf green, bright pink and lilac. Depending on the length of your table, find two or three matching or coordinating tablecloths in these colors as a wonderful way to introduce your color scheme. Arrange the tablecloths each in a diamond pattern, one slightly layered over

the other. Now that your foundation is complete, you are ready to festoon centerpieces. I’ve heard it said that a flat table is a boring table and I could not agree more. Hunt for

Okinawa continued from >1 “Well, because of that time a 17-year-old kid became a man overnight,” Harmening says. “It made me grow up, and it helped me understand people.” Harmening said he rarely left the confines of Connellsville, Pennsylvania, during his early years, spending his days as an active member of the Boy Scouts and dreaming of one day entering the seminary. All of that changed when the United States entered World War II, emptying the town of most of the young men eligible to fight and offering Harmening, once he turned 17, only three choices. Harmening could wait to be drafted, go into the seminary, or join the service. The only other possibility — somehow avoiding the draft — was not an option. “This guy wasn’t going to be a draft dodger,” Harmening said emphatically, and he was worried that if he went into the seminary — and did not stay — his motives would be questioned. The choice was made: Harmening would enlist in the Navy. The path to Okinawa would not be a straight line. Harmening was diagnosed with scarlet fever after just a month of boot camp, then assigned to serve as an armed guard protecting Merchant Marine vessels used to ferry

civilian prisoners from South America to internment camps in Texas. When the Merchant Marine force was downsized in 1944, Harmening was given orders to report to San Francisco, where he soon learned he was headed to the Pacific. Fortunately for Harmening, the first group of soldiers to land on Okinawa were not fired upon, and he would spend his time on the island serving in a role he describes as “cleanup man.” Assigned to work as a shopkeeper, Harmening, along with the other men in his unit, also spent time helping to secure the area and keeping a lookout for snipers. He prefers not to speak about some of the things he saw during his service, but will say that his time on Okinawa opened his eyes to the terrible price of war. “Nobody hates war more than the men who fight it,” Harmening said, and he remembers praying for many of the men he served with as they died. Seven decades later, Harmening still believes he had someone watching over him. He also believes his true purpose in life has always been to serve as a priest. Just a few months after leaving Okinawa on May 19, 1946 — his 19th birthday — Harmening entered the seminary. “I feel the Lord brought me back for that reason,” Harmening said. “I think that’s why he protected me.”

Father Adrian Harmening, who served in the Navy during the Battle of Okinawa, says he feels as though he was meant to be a priest. “I feel the Lord brought me back for that reason,” Harmening said. “I think that’s why he protected me.”

While he doesn’t relish talking about his time on Okinawa, there is one thing Harmening will say with no hesitation: Dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which effectively ended the war, was absolutely the right decision. Had the United States decided to invade Japan, “it would have

been a massacre,” Harmening said. He said ending the war the way they did ultimately saved countless lives, both American and Japanese. “I thank God for the fact that [President Harry] Truman made that decision,” Harmening said. “He saved the world that day.”

Now is the time to talk about county’s future By Roslyn Ryan Editor

G

oochland County officials have released the first draft of the 2035 comprehensive land use plan, a document created to help guide the county’s development for the next 20 years. Over the course of the next several weeks, the public will be invited to share input on the plan during five scheduled public meetings. It goes without saying, but it is certainly important enough to reiterate here: The time to make your voice heard about the future of development in Goochland County is now. According to county leaders, this particular land use plan has been extensively revised and is easier to understand than previous drafts. In other words, even those not well-versed in the sometimes opaque language of community planning and zoning will be able to grasp what the county has laid out. Most of us, somewhere in our travels, have seen an example of development gone wrong — and there are plenty of ways for that to happen. Perhaps the best way to insure that it doesn’t happen, of course, is for an informed

citizenry to offer good feedback on the proposed plans, and make sure leaders know what they like and don’t like. Have an opinion? Share it. See something that doesn’t make sense? Ask about it. For a list of public meeting dates and times, see page 5. It’s your county, and your future. Speak now. *** If you’re anything like me, you were even more glad than usual to see spring make it to our little corner of the world. After a winter that seemed like it might go on forever (“Oh, great, more snow!”), I don’t think I have ever been happier to see the first sign of leaves on the trees, or the first daffodils peeking out of the ground. All around Goochland there are other signs of spring as well. The 11th annual Spring Garden Fest will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at the Goochland campus of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (1851 Dickinson Road), and plenty more events are sure to follow. We’ll be keeping you posted in our pages, and look forward to seeing you out and about. Life lessons learned in scouting still hold true By Ron Spessard Contributing columnist

O

urs was a poor Boy Scout troop. Few of us could afford a shirt, let alone a full uniform. Most of us got by with a red scout kerchief tied around our necks. What we did have were two Korean War veterans who made terrific scout masters and mentors. Sam and Ray were two men with very young families of their own who gave up their time to teach us, not only scouting, but actual survival skills, selfreliance and courage. Life skills. Sam was lean and tall with dark hair and eyes and served as a captain in the U.S. Army. While Ray, short and stocky with red hair, freckles and a ready smile, was his staff sergeant. They were best friends since the war and used their patience, skill and great sense of humor to teach and lead our troop. We learned everything by the book and went well beyond. They scheduled camping trips at least four times a year; one for each of the changing seasons. Sometimes they actually waited for a rainy day forecast. Then they took us camping in the mountains. Every boy knew how to pitch a tent or lean-to, use an ax and thick bladed camping knife, and pack supplies and equipment into his backpack. We kept things light and dry as water, except when cooking and drinking, was the enemy. Their entire philosophy was based on four very important words: Build a good fire! Winter, spring, summer, or fall, nothing provides comfort and confidence like a brilliant, warm, crackling fire. The kind you build with patience, using very small dry twigs stacked carefully to allow oxygen to reach the flame. Then add mid-sized branches with medium and larger ones all collected in advance and cut into proper sizes. No need to search during the night for more fuel. The fire would burn so hot that it began to crumble and fall into itself, creating a bed of glowing coals that turned from bright yellow-orange to a deep, dark red, with blue flames flickering about underneath. Finally, it would change into a deep, dark blackred flame that would smolder and be there all through the night, ready to welcome you in the mists of morning, still warm and ready to burst into life

with a few dry twigs tossed on top. The smell of fresh brewed coffee and strips of thick bacon being fried on a flat stone or iron skillet, spread throughout the entire campsite, with pancake batter baked thick like a biscuit and eaten hot while warming your hands and fingers. Was anything ever so great as those smells and tastes? My first early spring, cold, rainy day camping trip was at the base of the White Cliffs in the lower region of the Appalachian Mountains. After hiking several miles, setting up camp, and collecting wet firewood, Sam and Ray stood beside me watching as I used my knife to strip the wet bark from the twigs and small branches, and then whittled them into strips the size of toothpicks. It was my turn to build the cooking fire that everyone would be counting on. I ignored the cold numbness in my fingers and stacked the wood carefully before using the one barnburner match given to me to light the fire. I had all the other pre-cut branches stacked under the square tarp attached to the front of the tent; keeping off the rain. I held my breath, cupped my hands to block the wind, and struck the match. Instantly, the flame took hold; the fire burned. I would build it slowly; a good fire, strong enough now to burn through the

Their entire philosophy was based on four very important words: Build a good fire! wet bark of larger branches and ignite the dry wood underneath. Whether we were tying knots, cooking on a spit, pitching a tent, or building a debris hut, Sam and Ray would teach us first, then assist us for a few times, and finally simply watch; letting us fail and begin again until we got it right. By the time we were teenagers and no longer scouts, small groups of us would go off into the mountains for days or weeks at a time in all kinds of weather. Nothing could replace that sense of freedom; of being connected to nature and answering only to her natural laws. The hardships were a challenge. They were fun! Now that we were older we carried rifles or bows and arrows to hunt small game and always had a length of fishing line kept in reserve. During school see Lessons > page 7

living room of Ray’s house and laughed about old camping trips from my younger years. Then we shook hands and they wished me good luck. As I started through the door Sam called out, “Ronnie, remember to always build a good fire.” Ray laughed and added, “A really good fire.” I knew exactly what they meant. It all came down to this one last lesson, one last bit

of advice, one last moment in their lives and mine. I smiled and said, “I will.” Then I closed the door. And I did. The fire still smolders, dying down only to ignite again with the beginning of each new day. Sam and Ray taught me well. The fire burns strong. Thursday, April 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. is kindergarten registration for Goochland County. To find the school in their attendance zone, Goochland parents should visit www.glnd.k12.va.us or call (804) 556-5630. Minimize encounters

Homeowners can take a few basic steps to minimize snake encounters in their yards: Remove brush piles, stacks of building materials, debris and other hiding spots for snakes or rodents. Stack firewood away from your home. Remove weedy areas that provide cover for snakes or rodents, and keep grass mowed. Snakes usually avoid open, exposed areas. The head of a poisonous snake is shaped like a triangle, or arrowhead, compared to the oval shape of a harmless snake’s head. Summer camp options abound S ummer camp is a beloved tradition in many families. Many parents of young children fondly recall spending their summers at summer camp, where they made lifelong friends and learned the finer points of roasting marshmallows and competing in three-legged sack races. Parents looking for the right summer camp for their kids will soon discover there are various types of summer camps, each offering youngsters something different. The following are some of the summer camp options parents can expect to encounter as they search for the right camper for their kids.

DAY CAMP Day camps are not overnight camps, which means kids will return home each night rather than sleep over at camp. Day camps typically offer many of the activities people have come to associate with camps, including crafts, sports and even day-trips to experience local culture or attractions. Many day camps are co-ed, and counselors typically live within the community.

FAITH-BASED CAMP

Faith-based camps offer many of the same activities as more traditional summer camps, but do so while simultaneously offering campers the opportunity to celebrate and further explore their religious beliefs. Some faith-based camps may focus heavily on religion, incorporating faith into daily camp activities, while others may be more subtle with regard to integrating religious beliefs and lessons into camp activities.

SPORTS CAMPS Some summer camps focus on a particular sport, catering to young athletes who want to further develop their athletic talents. Sports camps may feature guest lectures and lessons from notable local athletes and coaches, while some camps may provide instruction from current and/or former professional athletes. Some sports camps are overnight, while others are day camps.

Family camps are opportunities for the whole family to enjoy the summer camp experience

FAMILY CAMPS Family camps are opportunities for the whole family to enjoy the summer camp experience. Family camps typically tailor their activities around tasks families can complete together, with counselors providing assistance when itÕs needed. Family camps may be faith-based or secular, and families typically stay overnight, sleeping in facilities on the campsites or in lodging away from home.

SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPS

Parents of children with special needs can still send their kids to summer camp, as there are many camps that cater to such youngsters. Special needs camps may cater to campers who are blind, deaf, learning disabled, or mentally or physically disabled. Staff at special needs camps typically undergoes extensive training, which helps to calm some of the fears parents may have about leaving their special needs children at camp. Facilities at special needs camps are often built to accommodate the specific needs of campers. Metro Creative Services

Think you know soy? Getting the scoop on soyfoods’ health benefits could serve you well

T

he prevalence of soy products in recipes and ready-made foods has skyrocketed in recent years. Soybased milk products and others that substitute soy with more traditional ingredients are no longer relegated to the outskirts of the neighborhood grocery store. While soy is being consumed in greater numbers than in decades past, some people are still unaware of the various health benefits and advantages to including soy in their diets. Soyfoods provide a number of nutritional benefits for people of all ages. According to the Soyfoods Association of North America, recent studies have indicated that eating soy at an early age may help protect against some diseases, including breast cancer, later in life. Soy also may help improve cognitive function. People largely turn to soy to maintain a healthy weight and control their cholesterol, as soy can replace foods that are higher in saturated fat, calories and cholesterol. For example, a glass of whole milk contains 150 calories and eight grams of total fat. Soy milk, however, comes in between 80 and 100 calories and may have roughly four grams of fat. The fat is mostly healthy fats, as there are only trace amounts of saturated fat in soy products. Soy also has cholesterol-lowering properties and can be beneficial to those who are lactose intolerant. Vegetarians and vegans routinely turn to soyfoods as a main protein

source. Soyfoods can offer a number of healthy benefits, including providing a lean protein source that is lower in saturated fats than other forms of protein. Calcium-fortified soymilk offers the same nutritional value as cow’s milk but can still be consumed by those who are lactose intolerant. Soy can help many people maintain healthy weights, and soyfoods promote cardiovascular health. While soyfoods can be beneficial, such foods are not perfect. Allergies to soy are possible, and as with any dietary supplement, moderate consumption may be all that’s necessary to provide nutritional benefits. Overconsumption of soy may not provide the desired results. One concern regarding soy is its relationship to genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Reports suggest that the vast majority of soybeans produced in the United States are GMOs. While these soybeans are primarily used for livestock feed, many foods that people eat also contain GMO soybeans. The jury is still out with regard to the impact that GMO foods have on personal health. Proponents of GMOs say their use makes agricultural products safer and more affordable. GMO crops may be resistant to pests, eliminating the need for herbicides and pesticides. But opponents of GMOs say that they may be harmful, as they might have less nutritional value, incite allergic reactions, cause problems with liver function and be harmful to the planet. Individuals who still want to enjoy soy products such as tofu, miso, tempeh, soy sauce, soy milk, and foods that contain soy lecithin, an emulsifier, can opt for organic products and those that specifically advertise no GMO ingredients. More and more food manufacturers are heeding consumer demand for foods that do not contain GMOs, and producers of soyfoods are no exception. Brands like Silk(R), Tofurky(R), Wildwood(R) and Eden Foods(R) produce soy products that are GMO-free. Read labels to determine if soy products contain GMOs. —Metro Creative
