A

quick question: What do you see when you look at a sweet potato? For many of us, it’s just another offering at the local grocery store or something unearthed from our home garden. Buy it or pick it, bake it and eat it. End of story. When Shalom Farms’ Dominic Barrett looks at a sweet potato, however, he sees something very different. As the executive director of the Goochland-based nonprofit, Barrett’s focus is on bringing healthy, fresh food to those who otherwise would not have access to it. To Barrett, a sweet Barrett potato is a way to improve lives and fight disease, to offer a connection to agriculture and an education on food production and the environment.

Planned animal shelter will offer increased space

In short, for Barrett, a sweet potato is power. It isn’t just sweet potatoes, of course. Since its founding in 2008, Shalom Farms has grown a wide variety of produce to be distributed throughout the Richmond area. The farm donates about one third of the food it produces to the hunger-relief organization FeedMore, then another third directly to food pantries and other community organizations. Much of the rest of the produce is sold through Shalom see Shalom Farms > 5

When it comes to opening the planned new animal shelter in Goochland, Animal Control Director Tim Clough definitely has a date in mind. “I’d like for it to open tomorrow,” Clough joked last week, sitting at his desk in the front of the department’s current facility on Hidden Rock Lane. Unfortunately, he admitted, the new shelter is only in its initial planning and design phase right now, and he and the staff won’t be able to put together much of a timeline until that process is complete. see Shelter > 4

The Goochland Animal Shelter, located at 1900 Hidden Rock Lane in Goochland, has the following pets available to a good home: a spayed female cat, about 1 to 3 years old; a male lab mix, about 2 years old; and a spayed female beagle, about 2 to 3 years old. Donations of cans of cat food are greatly appreciated as the shelter is currently housing many cats. Anyone interested in adopting a pet is urged to visit from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The facility has many lost dog and cat fliers posted. For more information on these pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Goochland Animal Shelter, call (804) 5565302. You also can visit the shelter on Facebook at “Goochland County Animal Control.”

YMCA instructors plan marathon ride Contributed report

On Thursday, April 16, the Goochland YMCA will be kicking off its Annual Campaign, raising funds to help individuals and families in need participate in Y programs such as after school care, youth sports, diabetes management, summer camps, health and wellness and teen leadership. The highlight of this campaign kick-off is instructor Michelle Emman’s 12-hour ride on a stationary bike in the lobby of the YMCA. Emman will be joined this year by instructors Sunnie Wright and Ann Mary Bettenson, as well as the Goochland County Sheriff Jim Agnew. Monetary donations can be made to the Annual Campaign and those wishing to help can also donate their time and ride (to give the riders breaks throughout the 12 hour ride) or ride with them to help the Y continue to change lives!

What Clough and shelter coordinator Julie Lawrence do know for sure is that the new facility will offer a muchneeded increase in space. Right now, the 2,000square-foot facility offers only room enough to meet their basic needs; a bigger space will allow them to separate different types of animals — keeping puppies in a separate area from adult dogs, for example — and to deal with a projected increase in the number of animals housed in the shelter as Goochland’s population continues to grow. To help defray the start-up costs associated with opening a new shelter, Goochland Animal Control is now accepting donations from the community. Anyone wishing to donate may send contribu-

tions to 1900 Hidden Rock Lane P.O. Box 10, Goochland, VA 23063. Despite the difficult wait to get the construction of their new digs underway, Lawrence said she has been pleased with what the shelter has been able to accomplish over the past two years. In addition to increasing the number of animals adopted annually, Lawrence said the staff has made a concerted effort to improve the facility’s public image as well. “I just think things have changed so much,” Lawrence said. “Things have really been looking up.” *** Clough and Lawrence also shared some good news about a few of the shelter’s former residents. Shortly after putting out the word that a litter of lab puppies would be available for adoption, Lawrence received

a flood if inquiries about the dogs. Asked how long it took to find them all homes, Lawrence laughed. “About two hours,” she said. The pups’ mother, Minnie, also found a wonderful home, Lawrence reported, adopted by the Taylor family. Now Lawrence said she is hoping for the same result for Betsy, a 2-year-old spayed

female hound, and Elvis, a 1year-old neutered male hound. Both have been at the shelter for over a year, Lawrence said, and would make a wonderful pet for the right family. “They are such sweet dogs, just a little on the shy side,” Lawrence said. “They just need a special someone to adopt them.”

Volunteers help tend the fields at Goochland’s Shalom Farms. The nonprofit grows thousands of pounds of produce annually, and donates the food to help feed Virginia residents in need.

Shalom Farms continued from >1 Farms’ youth-run farm stands, which offer hands-on experience for young people in underserved areas.

“[We] have many clients who are very aware of how to eat healthy, they just have not had the money, the access or the tools to be able to do it.” Shalom Farms’ Dominic Barrett To Barrett, the farm’s core mission is to make sure that healthy food gets into the hands of those who need it most no matter where they live, but the most severe need

is often in inner city areas where finances are limited and growing healthy food may be impractical or even impossible. While education is a component of what they do, Barrett insists it isn’t always a lack of knowledge that leads people to embrace a diet focused on unhealthy, processed foods. “I think in a lot of ways we as a country have grown apart from our connection to food,” Barrett said, which can negatively impact how we eat. “But we also have many clients who are very aware of how to eat healthy, they just have not had the money, the access or the tools to be able to do it.” Shalom Farms was born out of a partnership between Richmond’s United Methodist Urban Ministries (UMUM) and the retreat center Westview on the James, combining UMUM’s desire to increase food access in Richmond with Westview’s land resources. A quick look at the numbers tells the story of their success so far. Thanks in part to the thousands of volunteers who have rolled up their sleeves to

help out over the years, the farm has produced hundreds of thousands of pounds of food — including over 96,000 last year alone — and helped over 60 families a year through its Prescription Produce program, an effort that offers free produce, health checks and educational opportunities. To Barrett, a particular joy is working with the kids who visit the farm and work in the produce stands. “It’s a powerful experience for all of us to connect to the food we eat, no matter how old we are,” Barrett said, “but seeing a kid’s eyes open wide when they realize, for example, that all the vegetables on the pizza they’re eating came out of the ground — that can be really fun.”

Hunger mission is one we can all get behind By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Ask me what I first fell in love with when I first moved out to the country over 15 years ago, and I will always say the same thing: the food. Never in my life — and I grew up with an Italian mother who was no slouch in the kitchen — have I seen the abundance that greets me at every cookout, or witnessed holiday tables groaning under the weight of so many platters, baskets and bowls.

Hunger, insidious as it is, takes a physical, mental and emotional toll on its victims. For so many of us who have enjoyed this kind of bounty and come to think of it as routine, it may be difficult to imagine that there are many people in our community who struggle daily to find enough food to eat. Ironically, one of the things that makes Goochland such a lovely place to live — the wide-open spaces and rolling countryside — also helps earn the western part of the county

its status as a “food desert,” a tag used by the Federation of Virginia Food Banks to denote an area where populations live more than 10 miles from a grocery store. Hunger, insidious as it is, impacts those who face it in a number of ways, taking a physical, mental and emotional toll. Children who go to school hungry are at an obvious disadvantage, and all of those without access to nutritious food face serious health risks. Fortunately, Goochland residents have a tremendous reputation for stepping up and giving back, and Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services (GFCFS) will be offering an opportunity to do just that in the coming weeks. From April 17 to April 25, GFCFS and Harvest Food Pantry at Victory Christian Church will be holding the “Hunger Hurts, Goochland Gathers” food drive. Collection boxes will be located at county locations, including Cook ’N Nook (on Dogtown Road), Curves, Essex Bank, EZ Ship, Goochland Family YMCA and Pak Mail. If you are in a position to help, please do. After all, in a place blessed with so much, there is no reason any of us should go hungry.

Letters to the Editor Goochland CASA thanks community for continued support Dear Editor, I would like to send out a special thanks to all those who supported our Rock and Roll Jubilee Concert last Saturday evening. To those who attended (in spite of the Final Four!) we appreciate your taking the time to acknowledge our 10th anniversary. The band was outstanding as usual. The Titans of Teentown and the Ashlandaires love what they do and it shows! To all the attendees who were curious as to what happened to our 10-pound chocolate bunny, it was won by one of our Goochland CASAs but she wanted to give it to children. So I am happy to report that I delivered the very big, solid chocolate bunny to the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls. If I were to predict what happened

next, I would guess that our bunny met its demise after lunch! Thanks to our community, we have grown over the past 10 years and we hope to continue to thrive — with their support. It is so very much appreciated. Goochland CASA thanks you and the children we serve thank you too! Ann O. Casey Executive Director Goochland CASA

State’s ‘Liquor Police’ should be sent packing Dear Editor, Everyone knows it takes three Virginians to change a light bulb, one to change the bulb and two for commiseration over the loss of the old bulb. But getting rid of the Virginia ABC police after our recent national

embarrassment in Charlottesville should not be as difficult as changing a light bulb. Lee Ware and Tom Garrett need to do their jobs and help eliminate the liquor police. ABC police officers have long out lived their usefulness since prohibition and are now a pimple on Virginia. Local and state police currently perform the vast majority of duties that ABC officers attempt to perform so we have significant redundancy at great expense to tax payers. In my MBA experience, if two people are doing the same job, one of them should be fired. Let’s hope our legislative representatives will do their jobs to rid us of the unnecessary and outdated liquor police and save the Commonwealth some tax money. Art Bachman Goochland

Surprised by Spring Break antics? Not me By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columninst

In years long past, the declaration of Spring Break evoked a sense of excitement and unbridled energy unequaled by few events in my life. The annual respite from responsibility usually meant a trip to Florida where other youths gathered for a week of frolic and immature behavior. No doubt, the annual rite of passage had its detractors even then, and its reputation often shocked the general public. I can’t remember my mother ever actually endorsing one of my escapades. There also was a prevailing permissive sense by authorities who looked the other way as we crowded their streets. As many Spring Breaks passed and my expertise regarding the escape improved, my choices for Spring Break also evolved. I spent my first spring break in Daytona Beach as a junior in high school. It was a different environment, and, as naïve firsttimers, we were easily overwhelmed.

As the years passed, the trips progressed farther South to Fort Lauderdale, the proverbial capital of sun and fun during Spring Break. By far, my best collegiate Spring Break trip was spent in Key West in the early 1970s. The small island was still a largely undiscovered cove of creative and off the grid residents mixed with a large military presence. Lazy days relaxing by the sun at the submarine slips gave way to fruity drinks and warm breezes at night, and the week passed too quickly. Snap back to the future, and I was not shocked to see a Fox News report citing the potential hazards of college kids on Spring Break. The network has become an annual permanent feature in Panama City, Florida, for years, as they expose the sins and sensation of Spring Break 2015. A reporter seemingly tried to keep a straight face as she listed the increased number of arrests, assaults and other elements that donate to the image of Spring Break today. Question is: Do the increased

arrests and skimpier bikinis equate to a Spring Break that is deteriorating in to a Burning Man event? I don’t think so as I tweak my limited memory for thoughts of my days wasting away a week away from campus. I couldn’t help but asking almost aloud as the report continued, “What exactly did you think was happening at Spring Break?” I’ve got a sneaky suspicion the masses of kids on break today are probably doing the same sort of things we did decades ago. And in even a more stark realization of what Spring Break means to me today, I’m preparing for a week of activities with my kids that don’t involve mass drinking, all night parties or the hint of a beach. We’ve planned things like a day at the park, a trip to the mountains and a most anticipated trip to Southern Season for milk shakes. I don’t begrudge or judge the students who probably do things on see Surprised > 7

Spring Break they wouldn’t in their normal routines. After more than seven decades, Spring Break is becoming as American as apple pie. For those who are annoyed by the rituals performed at beaches around the country as spring arrives, perhaps they should turn their heads. As we prepare at my house for a less exciting Spring Break, what happens in Florida stays safely away, and, for years now, out of mind. Like the man said, “They have their way of partying, and we have ours.

BUGGY TOP BARNS RENT TO OWN

The Federation of Virginia Food Banks considers Western Goochland County to be a “food desert” -- an area where populations live more than 10 miles from a supermarket or large grocery store if in a rural area. “Unfortunately we still have food insecurity here in our community,” Sally Graham, executive director of Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services, said. “Goochland has come together before to assist our food pantries in avoiding food shortages. And we need your help again as we head into the summer months when our shelves are more empty.” Everyone can easily participate, from families to neighborhoods, from churches to businesses. Urge your church or neighborhood leaders to be involved. Seeing the need to feed over 1800 food-insecure Goochland residents, Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services and Harvest Food Pantry at Victory Christian Church are working together to launch a community-wide food drive this month. “Hunger Hurts. Goochland Gathers” runs Friday, April 17 through Saturday, April 25. The Goochland County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed this week as “Hunger Awareness Week” in Goochland to urge all citizens to actively participate and support these two Goochland pantries and their Goochland neighbors in need. In a recent survey, nearly 75 percent of Goochland families in need, which includes nearly 500 children, say that they often skip meals or eat less because of lack of food.

Thursday, April 16, marks the fifth annual Regional Kindergarten Registration Campaign, coordinated by Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond. “Our goal is to reach more parents about the kindergarten registration date and help more parents understand what school readiness is,” Jacque Hale, director of Smart Beginnings. said. “Parents are their child’s first and most important teacher.” Children who are 5 years old by Sept. 30 can start kindergarten in the fall, but first they need to be registered. Thursday, April 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. is kindergarten registration for Goochland County. To find the school in their attendance zone, Goochland parents should visit www. glnd.k12.va.us or call (804) 556-5630. The following documents are usually required for registration: Child’s official, certified birth certificate Child’s Social Security card Proof of address School Entrance Health Form Photo ID for parent of legal guardian In the Richmond region, one in seven children enters kindergarten already behind in language and literacy skills. This preparation needs to begin long before a child reaches a classroom. Smart Beginnings recommends these activities to help children build their skills and confidence: Read and look at books every day Practice counting real objects Show respect and use good manners Practice writing their name – with an uppercase first letter Find name letters of the alphabet everywhere you go Play with Play-Doh and toys to strengthen hard and finger coordination Use scissors to practice cutting, and crayons and markers to draw and develop finger strength For more information about kindergarten registration and what to bring on April 16, parents can dial “2-1-1” or visit www.readychildren.net.z

Spring Fest offering online registration for first time Contributed report

Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardeners, together with Reynolds Community College and Virginia Cooperative Extension, will celebrate spring from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the college’s Goochland campus at on April 25 at their annual Spring Garden Fest. The festival, a day dedicated to gardening education, horticultural demonstrations, vendors, and plant sales, grows in popularity every year. This year, Spring Garden Fest offers online registration for its classes and workshops. By registering online, attendees can find out immediately if a class selections is available and get confirmation of enrollment. The speed of the online registration process increases chances of getting into these events, which are limited by space and the number of people they can accommodate.

Classes and workshops Once again, Spring Garden Fest will feature educational opportunities on a variety of subjects of concern to gardeners, with classes covering both broad topics and special areas of interest. There are many classes devoted to planning and managing a garden, including general subjects such as organic gardening, pest management, weed control, pruning, and soil improvement. Other classes cover more specific topics: growing and using scented geraniums; growing fun, uncommon edibles; incorporating fragrant plants into the garden; and propagating native plants. Two classes will cover creating specific types of spaces: an historic garden and a native meadow where a lawn once grew. For those interested in creating garden structures or materials in a hands-on workshop, this year’s

Garden Fest offers sessions on making hypertufa pots, building trellises and garden tents, propagating moss, and creating a succulent dish garden. To see the complete listing of all classes and workshops, along with more detailed descriptions of each, visit www.gpmga.org/springgardenfest.htm.

Plant sales, demos, and more Don’t have time to attend classes or workshops? There is no charge to enjoy the rest of what Spring Garden Fest has to offer. Feel free to watch any of the demonstrations on various gardening topics or stroll the beautiful landscaping and educational gardens at Reynolds. Stop by the Master Gardeners’ tent with questions about gardening or to learn more about the organization and its activities. Over the past 11 years, Spring

Garden Fest has become noted for its selection of quality plants at comparatively low prices. Both Reynolds horticulture students and the Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardeners will hold their annual plant sales, with other vendors offering garden-related products and services. There will be a holding area for purchases while you continue to enjoy the day. Lunches will also be available for purchase at Spring Garden Fest, or bring your own and enjoy a picnic on the grounds at Reynolds.

Registration Because space is limited in all of the classes and workshops, early registration is strongly recommended to ensure a seat. A $10 fee covers all classes and workshops, but partcipants must register to attend them. (Some workshops have an additional

fee for materials.) This year, it’s easier than ever to register early, using one of three methods: Go to www.gpmga.org/springgardenfest.htm and pay the fee using either a major credit or debit card. From the website, print the registration form and follow the instructions for payment and mailing. Call the Goochland Extension Office at 804-556-5841 and request a registration form via email. The deadline for early registration is April 17. Those who miss the deadline can register and pay for classes and workshops at the door, if space is still available. Registration on the day of the event will be $12, plus any fees for workshop materials. Fees are not refundable, and the festival is held regardless of the weather.

Community Calendar Thursday, April 9 In conjunction with a major event at Appomattox Court House National Historic Park, the Goochland County Historical Society will join in a national commemoration to mark the beginning of the end of the American Civil War. The bells will ring first at Appomattox at 3 p.m. The Goochland event will begin on the Courthouse Green in Goochland at 3 p.m. After an invocation the Courthouse bell will be rung at precisely 3:15 p.m. for four minutes, each minute symbolic of a year of war. The public is invited.

Bulldogs head to break with perfect record Goochland dashes Buckingham to remain undefeated By Jim Ridolphi

Special Correspondent

G

oochland pitcher Coleman Duty hasn’t had a start on the mound this season, but that all changed last week. After several rainouts on his scheduled starts, Duty made up for lost time last week as he notched his first complete game of the young season, a 9-3 win over visiting Buckingham. Duty scattered four hits laced with eight strikeouts as he stifled Knights’ batters with a deceptive curve ball. “It was working for me today,” he said following the Bulldogs’ fourth win of the season. “I felt good out there today. My fast ball was working and my curve was breaking and hitting the spots pretty good.” Duty said he hopes to register a string of complete game victories in this, his junior year. “I want to strive to get more this year and make that a habit,” Duty said. The Bulldogs started quickly scoring four runs in the first inning. Cory Alexander singled and Andrew Harcum walked. Scott Carter doubled in Alexander and Reid Chenault singled in two more runs. Chenault evenutually scored on an error, giving the

Bulldogs a 4-0 lead. Both teams added a run in the second inning. Carter removed any doubt regarding the outcome when he homered over the left field wall in the fouth, scoring two runs and giving the Bulldogs an 8-2 lead. He finished with a home run, double and three RBIs. “Scott is hitting the ball well, “ coach Wes Farkas said after the game. “Coleman pitched well in his first outing, and we got some timely hits when we needed them.” The Bulldogs scattered 10 hits over six innings in the victory. Farkas said there’s a difPhotos by Jim Ridolphi ferent flavor to this year’s team, and players like Carter Top, Scott Carter receives his teammates’s well wishes after he blasted a fourth inning home run in the win over Buckingham. Bottom, Buckingham first baseman Michael Allen chases Goochland’s Michael Nadder (11) back to first base in fourth inning action from and Harcum are contribut- last week’s 9-3 Bulldogs’ victory over the Knights. ing. “The more games we play, the more confident they get,” the coach said said. “Last year, we were getting runners on, but weren’t getting them across — but we are this year.” The Bulldogs defeated Amelia 20-9 earlier in the week, and the Bulldogs take a perfect record into the break. The team will get together over the week-long hiatus. “We’ll probably get together for a practice or two,” Farkas said. “It’s tough when you lose that game speed. They still get reps, but, during the season, there’s nothing like getting out and playing at real game speed.” Farkas said he hopes the team will continue its winning ways when they return next week. “Hopefully, we won’t skip a beat and keep playing the way we are.”

Business notes Several Goochland County businesses had reason to celebrate recently. Clockwise, from left, Francesca’s Hair Design owner Francesca Giambanco, right, with her husband Massimo, celebrated her first year in business on March 9, with a spirited party at the salon. Centerville Family Practice, founded by Dr. Berta Granados Ortega and Dr. Nelson Chen Fernandez, recently opened its doors to the Goochland community, marking the occasion with a ribbon cutting. The new owners of the White Hawk Tavern and Music celebrated their grand opening with a ribbon cutting on St. Patrick’s Day, followed by an evening of music featuring Terry Hazelton.
