Like so many others who have become involved with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation’s program at the James River Work Center, Jennifer Newton said she didn’t foresee the way the experience would affect her. “We like to say that we come for the horses and stay for the men,” Newton said of the program, which operates in partnership with the Department of Corrections rehabilitation and re-entry program for non-violent offenders, using rescued ex-racehorses housed at the facility. The TRF, which is the oldest and largest equine sanctuary of its kind in the world, rescues thoroughbreds no longer able to compete on the track from possible abuse neglect and slaughter. The local chapter was established in 2007 and currently maintains about 20 horses, most of which are available for adoption or sponsorship. Newton, who breeds horses with her husband on their farm in Crozier, said she has been inspired time and time again by the way the TRF program has helped those in the correcsee Open Barn > 3

The Goochland Animal Shelter, located at 1900 Hidden Rock Lane in Goochland, has the following pets available to a good home: Elvis, a neutered male, about 2 to 3 years old — he really needs a “furever” home since this week he will have been in the shelter an entire year; a female yellow Lab, about 4 to 6 years old; and a spayed female Beagle, about 3 to 5 years old. Anyone interested in adopting a pet is urged to visit from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The facility has many lost dog and cat fliers posted. For more information on these pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Goochland Animal Shelter, call (804) 5565302. You also can visit the shelter on Facebook at “Goochland County Animal Control.”

Glamor continued from >1 School, which serves students from the elementary through the high school level, is based on the concept of “natural learning,” said Tamra Adams, who founded the school in 2009. Adams, a mother of 12 who homeschooled several of her own children using the meth-
ods she has brought to AIS, said that each student in the school is given an individualized learning plan. She said the school also uses field trips and scheduled visits — like the one from Glam Squad — to help broaden students’ horizons. Annual ‘ride’ raises over $4K for county YMCA’s programs

Fitness instructor Michelle Emman is no stranger to challenges, having completed four 12-hour stationary bike rides to raise funds for the Goochland County YMCA. And even if their bodies were a bit sore — the ride was roughly the equivalent of 150 miles — their spirits were likely lifted by the fact that they had already earned over $2,000 (they would ultimately raise over $4,200). For Agnew, who regularly takes exercise classes with all three of his fellow fundraisers, the ride served as a sort of trial run for an upcoming three-day, 250-mile ride he will undertake in May during Police Memorial Week. “I’m going to be really tired after this, Agnew admitted, “but it’s a good test. Fostering kids’ love of reading a critical task By Roslyn Ryan Editor
If it isn’t exactly ironic, it’s at least amusing that World Book Day — which happens to be today — falls this year on the same day as the 10th anniversary of the first ever YouTube video posting. I m fairly certain that, had YouTube existed when I was a child, I would not have read nearly as much. Fortunately for me, videosharing sites — and the Internet, for that matter — were years from being invented when I was a child, so there was very little to compete with the stubby little paperback my father handed me one early summer morning shortly after school had let out for the year. I was about 10 and had never read anything much longer than your average children’s book, but, after just a chapter or two, I had been pulled into the embrace of this new book, this window into a time and place so far removed from my own. That book, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee, would gently change me from a child who grudgingly read only when it was assigned as homework to one who could lose herself for hours between the two covers of a novel. And if I have not yet man-

aged to get around to digesting the most celebrated works in the Western literary canon (no James Joyce or Dostoyevsky for me, thus far), I doubt I have enjoyed myself any less. Make no mistake about it, children still read these days. The success of the Harry Potter franchise proved that kids are more than happy and willing to embrace literature and to fall in love with the characters and places they find on the printed page. But as the digital world continues to come up with more and more diversions — online games! Photo sharing apps! Face Time! — there does exist the fear that both attention spans and young readership will continue to dwindle. Gone will be the days of entertainment that doesn’t require batteries, or magical journeys taken through the pages of a dog-eared paperback. In honor of World Book Day, let s do what we can to encourage our young people to read, to love books, and to find in them the comfort and delight so many of us did when we were growing up. It may be tough to compete with a video of a cat playing the piano, or whatever else happens to be trending on YouTube at any given moment, but we owe it to our children to try.

Students get ‘under the hood’ at local dealership hursday, April 16, was an eventful day at Goochland’s Parrish Ford. Eight fourth-graders from St. Christopher’s School came to visit Parrish Ford and enjoy an interactive learning experience. J.B. Hodges met with the boys and shared his career path from working as a teacher and coach to embarking on his long-standing relationship with Parrish Ford. He described to the students how all businesses are interdependent and need to have good working relationships to thrive. Ray Parrish explained Ford’s recent move to build the new 2015 F-150 with aluminum. Another highlight was being able to sit down with the sales manager, Harold Stricklin, and simulate ordering a new 2015 Mustang GT. There was much discussion of the necessary decisions that need to be made before buying a new vehicle. The students’ last stop was the Parts and Service Department, where service manager Tom Chisholm (above) gave them a tour of the facility and demonstrated how new technologies can enhance vehicles’ wheel alignments.

My son Jack is getting a Terrific Kid award Friday at his school. He doesn’t know anything about it. He also doesn’t realize it’s the beginning of a once-in-a-lifetime period of adventure for him. Like many other families who make the springtime trek to Disney World, we leave soon for a week of fun in Orlando, Florida. Our journey is a little different, however. Jack is visiting Disney for his Make-A-Wish trip. Make-A-Wish had its humble beginnings in 1980 when one man’s dream to help a dying child became a reality through the tenacity of others. With the help of numerous friends and colleagues, Tommy Austin and Ron Cox made it their
responsibility to fulfill the last wish of one little boy who was in the last days of a struggle with leukemia. The little boy had a simple wish: He wanted to be a law enforcement officer and “to catch bad guys.” Chris became Arizona’s first honorary Department of Public Safety (DPS) officer and the inspiration for Make-A-Wish. Since then, the program has provided thousands of families with a chance to enjoy the thrill of a lifetime. Sadly, in many cases, it is. Last year, more than 14,000 kids had their wishes granted. Since 1982, Make-A-Wish has helped more than 226,000 children realize a dream. And now, it’s Jack’s turn. I’ve struggled with the realization of just what this trip means. It’s a terror for parents in my situation
that never goes away and wakes you in fear in a sweat. In actuality, Make-A-Wish trips do not equate to a beginning of the end, and many recipients

MARIE ANDREWS Marie Beazley Andrews was born April 7, 1927, and passed away one day short of her 88th birthday. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Ervin A. Andrews. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Neumann (Paul); and her son, Michael Andrews Sr. (Drudy); six grandchildren, Brandon Snead, Michael Andrews Andrews Jr., Sandra Jackson (Abram), Trent Neumann, Matthew Andrews, Kara Neumann; and one greatgrandchild, Corinne Jackson. After graduating from Caroline County High School, she headed to Richmond for work with hat and white gloves in hand. Beginning her long career at Blue Cross/Blue Shield as a membership account representative, she was highly regarded by customers and co-workers for her extensive knowledge, strong work ethic (taking only two sick days in 35 years) and dedication to the large accounts she served. Her reputation for perfection led to being entrusted as the primary enrollment contact for the most valued customer accounts. Five years prior to retirement, she handled the online Special Project Conversion for the department. Marie had a special bond with nature and animals. From converting a toolhouse into an aviary for rescued tropical birds, to creating charm at her home, in her garden and on their property retreat in Goochland, she had a genuine talent for finding beauty and extending compassion in the world around her. With a mind that held directions like a GPS, she often led trips to beloved places she wished others to experience. In addition to the love she had held for her late husband and family, she shared affections with a small circle of friends who enjoyed her sense of humor, her unvarnished candor, and her warmth. By all who knew and loved her, she will be missed. Our deepest gratitude goes to Drudy Andrews for her kindness, concern and loving care in these final weeks, treating our mother as if her own. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Bon Secours Hospice. A celebration of her life was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18 at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.

Spring Fest set for this Saturday
Ask Fern A
Annual event features workshops, exhibits
Dear Fern, As a sort-of-new mom (my daughter is three), I am always concerned about teaching the proper way to behave and modeling good manners. I would like to start introducing her to the concept of doing chores — nothing crazy, but I want to make sure she understands that being part of a family means helping. The problem is that many of the other mothers I spend time with — some of whom are close friends — seem to think that three years old is way too early to have “housework.” Fern, I’m only talking about asking her to do things like weed the flowerbed or help dry the dinner dishes. Am I really being unreasonable?
Contributed report
Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardeners, together with Reynolds Community College and Virginia Cooperative Extension, will celebrate spring from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, on the college’s Goochland campus at their annual Spring Garden Fest. The festival, a day dedicated to gardening education, horticultural demonstrations, vendors and plant sales, grows in popularity every year. Once again, Spring Garden Fest will feature educational opportunities on a variety of subjects of concern to gardeners, with classes covering both broad topics and special areas of interest. There are many classes devoted to planning and managing a garden, including general subjects such as organic gardening,
Dear Reasonable Mother, What other mothers do is what other mothers do. I happen to think you are a wise mother for allowing your little girl to help you in the garden. I bet your daughter doesn’t mind tagging along, exploring and pulling some weeds. A three-year-old will not be able to take on but so much responsibility for long periods of time, as you know, but you are right to think there are age-appropriate skills you can teach her that will be fun for her, and just as much a way to keep your daughter happily occupied as a way to ease her into that “Mommy’s Helper” role! Consider this: Nothing is more fun for a child than a bucket of suds and a sponge! Have your DGIT (domestic goddess in training) share a hand in washing the car, then bring the fun indoors. If she can steady herself on a stool and lean over the sink, she’ll have a splash washing the dishes with mommy close by to assist. She may even want to give the bathroom sink a quick scrub-a-dub-dub! I’m all in favor of handing children a dust rag and having them try their hand at baseboards and other easy-toreach surfaces. Feather dusters are particularly playful and before you know it, your Girl Wonder may even be giving her toys a polishing with one of these! Outside of her doing actual chores, you might like to encourage your little one to pull up a chair and have a snack or a chat while she watches you fold clothes or put away the dishes. It will be a while before she can do these things herself, but she ll eventually learn how to pitch in just by years of watching you. I hope your precious daughter will soon be able to pick you some flowers out of that garden of yours and that it will give you both a much-deserved sense of pride in the way she is blossoming!
pest management, weed control, pruning and soil improvement. For those interested in creating garden structures or materials in a handson workshop, this year’s Garden Fest offers sessions on making hypertufa pots, building trellises and garden tents, propagating moss, and creating a succulent dish garden. To see the complete listing of all classes and workshops, along with more detailed descriptions of each, visit www. gpmga.org/springgardenfest.htm.
Plant sales, demos, and more Don’t have time to attend classes or workshops? There is no charge to enjoy the rest of what Spring Garden Fest has to offer. Feel free to watch any of the demonstrations on various gardening topics or stroll the beautiful landscaping and educational gardens at Reynolds. Stop by the Master Gardeners’ tent with questions about gardening or to learn
more about the organization and its activities. Over the past 11 years, Spring Garden Fest has become noted for its selection of quality plants at comparatively low prices. Both Reynolds horticulture students and the Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardeners will hold their annual plant sales, with other vendors offering garden-related products and services. There will be a holding area for purchases while you continue to enjoy the day. Lunches also will be available for purchase at Spring Garden Fest, or bring your own and enjoy a picnic on the grounds at Reynolds. The deadline for early registration has passed, but attendees can still register and pay for classes and workshops at the door if space is still available. Registration on the day of the event will be $12, plus any fees for workshop materials. Fees are not refundable, and the festival is held regardless of the weather.
