Supervisors approve new subdivision By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The Goochland County Board of Supervisors has cleared the way for a new 29-acre subdivision just east of Maidens Road, voting unanimously May 5 during the monthly meeting to allow the rezoning of the property. The property, owned by Earl Thomson of Breeze Hill Inc., is located on the south side of Fairground Road, west of Breeze Hill Subdivision. The area is currently designated as a Rural Enhancement Area in the county’s Comprehensive Plan. Designers of the new neighborhood “tried to be diligent see Subdivision > 5

BUGGY Teacher’s new book offers closer look at insects’ unique world

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

s an Information Technology Resource Teacher for Goochland County Schools, you’d expect Bea Leiderman to know plenty about computer bugs. But bug bugs? The kind that buzz round our heads and crash our picnics and are forever being swatted away as we walk through the woods. As it turns out, Leiderman knows quite a bit about those as well. She recently published her third bug-based e-book, Tiny Meals, a closer look at what — and how — insects eat. see Bug book > 4

Samford’s name added to Parks and Rec Wall of Fame County man was a lifelong supporter of youth sports By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As young ballplayers take to the diamond this season, Wayne Samford is no longer there to coach their teams or umpire their games. But the spirit of the passionate youth sports champion, who passed away on April 12, 2014, at the Samford

age of 67, is still very much alive. “Wayne Samford was an amazing person,” Derek Stamey, director of Goochland County Parks, Recreation and Facilities, said. “He positively impacted folks well beyond the county boundaries of Goochland.” So lasting is Samford’s legacy that the Goochland County Parks and Recreation Department recently named him to the department’s Wall of Fame. On May 5, during the monthly Board of Supervisors meeting, county leaders also read a proclamation honoring Samford for his “longstanding dedication and longstanding commitment” to the people of Goochland, and the countless

Bug book continued from >1 With vivid photos, slow-motion video, and a host of other visual elements, the book offers readers a richly-detailed look at an often-unseen world. For Leiderman, what would become a near-obsession with photographing and learning about insects began, innocently enough, with a tiny drop of water. After reading somewhere that a drop of water placed on the camera lens of an iPhone would act as a magnifier, Leiderman decided to give it a try. “So I took a picture of this flower, and there was a bug on it,” Leiderman said. “And I thought, ‘Oh that’s fun, maybe I’ll go look at bugs.’ ” It was the first step in what would become a magical journey for Leiderman, whose passion for science and nature began decades ago in her native Columbia, where she remembers keeping and feeding caterpillars she would find on her family’s property. To John Hendren, Goochland Schools’ Director of Innovation and Strategy, who frequently has touted the benefits to students of creating their own e-books, Leiderman is a perfect example of how to turn a passion for a subject into an even deeper learning experience. Leiderman’s work “speaks to truly intrinsic pursuits, where someone finds a creative experience that turns into a passion,” Hendren said. “It’s wonderful having a staff member who is active-

ly modeling the modern possibilities of communicating with the world and can serve as a mentor to children who too want to develop an expertise and share it with the world.” When it comes to her writing and photography, Leiderman shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. She keeps her detachable magnifying lens — which early on replaced the drop of water — in her pocket at all times, and even gets her two children in on the act. During their daily trips to the pond near their home, Leiderman said, the three will often simply “sit and wait and see what shows up,” using the time to chat about their days and whatever else happens to come up — or buzz by. Concerning her job, it is clear that Leiderman enjoys being a student as much as being a teacher. With the books, she said, she wants to show young readers that “everything is interconnected and interrelated,” and that most insects are not only harmless, they are critical parts of our delicate ecosystem. “If I can convince people to stop killing everything they see, and realize that these things share our planet, maybe I can show them that there is no reason to fear them,” Leiderman said. After all, she added, “the more you know, the less there is to be afraid of.”

Bug business A few of amateur entomologist Bea Leiderman’s insights on insects ... “My favorite bugs are hover flies. They have very interesting faces and, although many flies are gross, these flies feed only on pollen and nectar. They have very pretty patterns on their abdomens and iridescent wings.” “I love knowing what bugs really look like when you observe them under magnification. It’s a little secret I have when I watch them fly around and other people don’t notice them.” “It is easy to be scared of what you are unsure of. If you don’t know the difference between a fly and a wasp (inset) or a fly and a bee, you might find all flying insects scary. I used to be scared of many insects, but now I look at them and identify them, and know how to avoid getting in trouble with them.”

Goochland resident appointed to Board of Visitors at UVa Contributed report

McGuireWoods Consulting Executive Vice President Mark Bowles was recently appointed to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors by G o ve r n o r T e r r y Bowles Mc Au l i f f e .

Subdivision continued from >1 in listening to neighbors and addressing their concerns,” said Stig Owens of the civil engineering firm Sekiv Solutions, pointing to a ban imposed on construction traffic from Oakland Drive; an increase in buffers on some lots from 50 to 100 feet; and providing additional landscape screening in several areas. The only request they didn’t include, Owens said, was one concerning minimum home square footage sizes for the subdivision.

Bowles continued from >1 Bowles was the winner of the annual Senior Volunteer award. “Throughout his entire life,” Bowles’ commendation read, he “has epitomized the tenets of service and community.” A crusader for Goochland residents living in unsafe and substandard housing, Bowles has devoted countless hours to the Goochland chapter of Habitat for Humanity and the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, building 20 homes and nearly 80 ramps for individuals with physical limitations.

Bowles replaces Dr. Edward Miller, a former faculty member who stepped down before the end of his term, and will begin his term on June 30. Bowles, 55, of Goochland, is a longtime political staffer and a former member of the Board of Visitors at James Madison University. He possesses more than three decades of experience in politics including serv-

ing as chief of staff for former Rep. L.F. Payne, D-5th, and as an assistant state attorney general. Founded in 1998, McGuireWoods Consulting LLC is a public affairs firm offering government relations, strategic communications and grassroots, and infrastructure and economic development services.

Pointing out that home builders are operating in a “different economic climate” than the one that existed in 2003, when neighboring Parker’s Hill subdivision was built, Owens said he did not think it would be appropriate to impose a minimum size restriction. “It’s really a market-driven exercise when it comes to home building,” Owens said, “and obviously [square footage limits] will be built into the covenants of the subdivision.” County Attorney Norman Sales pointed out to the board

that, since the application was for a rezoning and not a Conditional Use Permit, the county was not allowed to impose a minimum on the square footage of the individual homes. Even so, District 2 Supervisor Manuel Alvarez took the opportunity to suggest that perhaps bigger doesn’t always mean better when it comes to home sizes. “One of the things that older Americans are looking for is less square footage,” Alvarez said. “Not a less quality home — just a smaller home.”

“Virginia volunteers embody the values of community, cooperation and service to one another that make this Commonwealth such a great place to live,” McAuliffe said. “I am so proud to help celebrate these outstanding individuals, organizations and companies that are working every day to make life better for people in every corner of Virginia.” The awards ceremony was organized by the Office on Volunteerism and Community Service at the Virginia Department of Social Services, in partnership with the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism. These organizations are charged by the Governor with saluting

Virginians who have significantly contributed to the life and welfare of the Commonwealth and its citizens. The Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Awards are presented by the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism and VDSS’ Office on Volunteerism and Community Service on behalf of the Office of the Governor. These awards have recognized exceptional volunteer service in Virginia for more than 20 years. Saluting county’s teachers By Roslyn Ryan Editor

If you have a child attending any of Goochland’s schools, you’ll know that last week marked a time for celebrating the county’s outstanding educators. Teacher Appreciation Week is a time set aside for honoring the very special men and women who come to work every day, roll up their sleeves, and work superhuman hours to help prepare their young charges to meet the challenges of the world outside the schoolhouse walls. To be sure, this is often easier said than done. Today’s teachers face challenges that likely seem insurmountable at times, from competing with ever-shrinking attention spans to serving as surrogate parents for students in need of a guiding hand. Despite choosing a profession they know is not likely to bring fame or fortune, teachers often show up early, stay late, and give far more they could ever hope to get back. The best teachers light a fire in their students, imparting in them a love of learning and a curiosity that will serve them for the rest of their lives. For all that they do for the county’s students, we would like to add our voice to the chorus of those offering a heartfelt “thank you” to Goochland’s top-notch teachers.

*** Teaching and learning, of course, can take place anywhere, as Goochland resident Keith Snow proved last Friday. A father to a child with a visual impairment, Snow thought it would be a wonderful idea to host an all-day fishing clinic for other children facing the same challenges. Snow’s event, which was held at Pin Oak Farm on Hockett Road, welcomed children from all over Central Virginia for a day of fishing, food and fun. Occupation and mobility specialists were on hand to help teach the budding young fishermen how to cast, and dozens of other volunteers also helped make the day a success. As spring rolls quickly toward summer, so many of us will take for granted our ability to enjoy time on the water. We salute Snow and his volunteers for making sure that this group of very special children got a chance to do that too. *** Finally, speaking of learning, there is no reason it should stop just because schools let out for summer. Printed in this week’s Gazette is a list of the Goochland Parks and Rec camp offerings for 2015. We encourage you to check out the many opportunities for young people to keep moving and growing this summer.

Ask a Master Gardener Q.When should I prune my forsythias and azaleas?

A.

Generally with your spring flowering shrubs and trees, it’s best to prune soon after their bloom begins to fade. These would be your forsythias, azaleas, rhododendrons and lilacs. Camellias and gardenias should also be pruned soon after flowering as well. However, “late bloomers” such as hibiscus, rose of Sharon and Crape Myrtle should be pruned in late winter while dormant. The handy A Guide to Successful Pruning, Shrub Pruning Calendar for Virginia is available online from Virginia Tech at http:.//pubs.ext. vt.edu/430/430-462/430-462.html. County celebrates second annual ‘Green Day’ Contributed report

The splendor of the riverbank at Tucker Park at Maidens Crossing provided the setting for the second Goochland Green Day held Sunday, April 26. Presented by the Friends of Goochland Parks, Goochland County and the Goochland County Historical Society, with support from Dominion Resources, the event promoted stewardship and showcased the natural and historical significance of Tucker Park. Friends of Goochland Parks’ board member Leigh Dunn coordinated volunteers including: The Goochland AntiLittering and Recycling Council, which picked up litter on the roadside and riverfront (volunteers were Bill and Suzanne Coates, Elliot Krash, Erich Krouse and Jim Krogsund); The James River Master Naturalists and other volunteers, who completed plantings and maintenance on the Butterfly Garden (volunteers from the James River Master Naturalists were Val Pace, Janet Hormes, Kathy Dunn, Jack Leong, Rafer Sprouse

and Sandy Oglesby assisted by Shauna Sprouse and Bob Wheatley); The Goochland County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension, which directed a Project Learning Tree sustainability project; and The Virginia Department of Forestry, which distributed free tree seedlings. Friends of Goochland Parks’ board member and historian Chuck Peple kicked off the first Y History Walkers Tour, sponsored by the Goochland Historical Society and the Goochland YMCA. Walkers learn about the historical elements of the Tucker Park site and how it shaped Virginia’s early commerce history. Entertainment was provided by Friends of Goochland Park’s board member and musician, Terry Hazelton, who performed during the afternoon. The event concluded with juggler, magician and comic Jonathan Austin captivating the crowd with an environmental magic show. The show was the first event to use the recently completed Outdoor Classroom created by Boy Scout James McElmore.

The virtues of Pickleball Parks and Rec offering biweekly games By Mike Schoeffel Sports Writer

P

ickleball may have started in 1965, but it wasn’t until relatively recently that the sport started garnering an interest in Goochland County. But now that pickleball has gained momentum, it seems almost impossible to stop. In fact, Goochland Parks and Recreation holds weekly meet-ups from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Goochland

resident who often competes in Goochland, has become an avid pickleballer over the past several months. She said she finds the camaraderie and sense of community inherent in the sport. And, that she said, is what keeps her coming back. “People come together, they have fun together, and you laugh and joke,” said Chaffins. “That’s what I’ve seen so far. There’s a lot of camaraderie and it’s a good way to stay healthy and in shape.” Pickleball is essentially tennis with a wooden (or graphite) paddle, a whiffleball and a lower net. As the story goes, it was invented by former U.S. Rep. Joel Pritchard, R-Washington, in 1965 after his children complained about having nothing to do during the long summer months. And, the story continues, the sport was named after Pritchard’s dog, whose moniker was – you guessed it

The best part about pickleball to me is that, even if you mess up, you laugh at yourself, and everyone else laughs with you — not at you. — Linda Chaffins Sports Complex. Interested parties can contact the Goochland Parks and Recreation Department, or simply show up at one of the scheduled times. Linda Chaffins, a Powhatan

– Pickles. It’s an ideal sport for the Baby Boomer generation, of which Chaffins is a part of, because the court is smaller, which cuts down on the amount of movement required to compete.

Linda Chaffins first discovered pickleball through the Goochland Parks and Recreation Department, which offers get-togethers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Goochland Sports Complex. Chaffins, a former tennis player, instantly fell in love with the sport, saying, “People come together, they have fun together, and you laugh and joke. That’s what I’ve seen so far. There’s a lot of camaraderie and it’s a good way to stay healthy and in shape.”

Pickleball has garnered a fair amount of national publicity in retirement communities across the nation. So much so, in fact, that the Wall Street Journal published an article about the sport in 2013 (three years after it published an article about how the continuous popping noise of ballhitting-paddle was causing friction between players and non-players in certain retirement communities). According to the most recent article, entitled “The

Rules of Pickleball,” there were over 100,000 pickleball players in the United States in 2013, and that the number of courts in North America had “doubled to over 5,600” between 2010 and 2013 When placed in the national context, the sport appears to be somewhat of a late-comer to Goochland County. But Goochlanders certainly seem to be making up for lost time. So, what exactly has the senior citizen commu-

nity going bonkers about the sport? Some, like one Wall Street Journal interviewee, claim the popping sound of ball-on-paddle is “like a drug.” Chaffins, a former collegiate tennis player, offers a more humanistic perspective. “The best part about pickleball to me is that, even if you mess up, you laugh at yourself, and everyone else laughs with you – not at you,” she said. “Today I was up at the net, it was an overhead smash and should have been easy. I said ‘I

got it!’ but swung and missed. My partner picked me up, and we both just laughed it off.” Chaffins is a newcomer to the sport. She didn’t discover it until January in what can accurately be called a moment of pickeball serendipity. She was in Roanoke for a funeral when one of her friends mentioned how she just couldn’t get enough of pickleball. see Pickleball > 13

who has any inkling of interest in the sport should come out and give it a shot. “I played with one woman who was 90, and she’s got a beautiful stroke,” said Chaffins. “Another lady told me she’s an introvert, that she was lonely, and that pickleball has been good for her because she’s had a chance to meet new people.” “And that’s the thing,” she added. “Meeting new people, being active, and creating a strong sense of community.”

IN THE GARDEN: Tips and Advice

Growing your own vegetables without breaking ground — or your bank account you stake or support the plants as needed, the standard types of vegetables will do fine. There are a few drawbacks to gardening “above the ground,” however, and chief among them is cost. Large pots, even plastic ones, can be expensive, and many of the most popular vegetables for the home garden require those large pots. Good quality potting mix to go in the containers can also become costly. Containers: The good news is, you don’t need expensive pots from a garden or home improvement store. They simply need to be large enough to hold a fully-grown plant and beat least six to eight inches deep. They should have drainage holes in the bottom, and have a shape that makes them stable. The lighter the container the better, since you should be able to move your plants to shelter them from harsh weather conditions or deer. (Dollies or small platforms on caster wheels are very helpful for moving planters, or used children’s wagons can often be found at yard sales or consignment stores.) Many non-traditional objects can be used as planting containers, as long as they were never held materials that are unsafe for plants or people. Some examples of containers you can repurpose for planting include: plastic buckets, barrels, clothes baskets lined with plastic bags, plastic storage bins, burlap sacks, children’s wagons and “kiddie pools,” old wheel barrows, and wooden pallets. Wet Crawl Space? Cracked Bricks? Uneven Floors? If you’re handy with tools, you can use scrap lumber to construct planters of various sizes, provided the lumber hasn’t been treated with chemicals that might harm your plants. Generally, if the wood was safe for human contact, it will be fine to use for planters. As long as your containers have holes for drainage, it’s not necessary to put small rocks into the bottom. If the holes are large enough that soil leaks out, cut a piece of mesh screen to fit the bottom. Soil: A quality potting mix for may be the Owned & Operated by most costly part of your container garden, but Professional Engineers it’s certainly the most important. The prepackaged mixes from garden and home improvement stores can be costly, especially the higher-quality Stella & Jesse Waltz, P.E., Owners brands. Depending on the size of your garden, you can save money by preparing your own pot*Any job over $3000. Container gardening is simply growing the things you might plant in the ground in containers instead. It’s become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reasons: it requires far less space; there are no weeds to pull; you can make up for poor quality, local soil; and plants can be moved indoors for protection from weather or pests. As with a garden that exists in the ground, a container garden requires the proper type and amount of sunlight, depending on your crops. While root vegetables and leafy greens do fine in partial shade, most fruit-bearing vegetables need eight to ten hours of direct sun to thrive. Most of the standard varieties of vegetables grown in the ground can be grown in containers and will produce regular-size fruits. Although you can now purchase some varieties specifically for growing in containers, as long as your pots are roomy enough for good root growth, and if

to determine the amount for your container sizes. All of the ingredients for your mix can by found at a garden center or home improvement store. Mix them thoroughly and store the soil where it will stay dry and at an even temperature. Water: There is no doubt that your container garden, in full sun, will require more water than a traditional one. At the height of summer, plan to water your plants at least once a day. There are several ways to help your plants’ soil stay cooler and possibly reduce the amount of watering you’ll need to do. A small layer of mulch will help the containers retain moisture, and you can protect them from drying winds by hanging tarps over strung clothesline and staking the bottom edge. Do not set your containers directly on surfaces that get very hot, such as concrete patios, paved driveways, or decks made from composite wood-alternatives. Instead, set them on pallets or low platforms to allow air circulation under them. And if your plants begin to wilt from the heat, despite frequent watering, group them together to form natural canopies that will help shade the soil. With a little imagination, a container garden, whether it fills a small balcony or an entire patio, need not be an expensive way to enjoy the satisfaction of growing fresh, delicious vegetables this summer.
