Call him the MVP. Goochland County Public Schools recently announced its 2015 Teachers of the Year, and Goochland High School Physical Education teacher Wes Farkas earned honors as the top teacher for his school and the division as a whole. Farkas and the other winners from each individual school were recognized during the May 12 monthly school board meeting. A native of Paeonian Springs, Farkas attended Farkas Loudoun Valley High School and The College of William & Mary. As the school’s baseball coach, Farkas also knows a thing or two about teamwork. Seeing students work together and learn from one another is one of many things he has come to appreciate over the years, Farkas said. “I also love seeing students find an activity or interest that they will hang on to for the rest of their lives.” To GHS principal Mikle Newman, Farkas’ true strength is in his ability to combine school lessons with life lessons. Farkas, a 14-year teaching veteran, “does an amazing job focusing on instruction each day,” Newman said. “In addition to the physical education or health lesson, he guides students in developing and enhancing leadership skills, teamwork and respect for others.”

Cemetery continued from >1 Other members of Grace Episcopal Church, including Katie Meyers, Nichole and Patrick Jackson and Miriam Turner and priest Rhonda Baker, stopped by to cheer the group on and Brian Meyers supplied a much-appreciated barbeque lunch. Greg Lagasse and Eleanor Andrews, a community member who had seen an article about the group in the Gazette, stopped in to lend a hand as well. The first task was to scrub the stones with a mild soap, rinse, and apply the “magic potion” — D/2, an environmentally-safe biological agent used to keep the grave markers at Arlington National Cemetery, many national monuments, and even the White House, clean. While D/2’s ultimate effectiveness will be seen only after two to four months, engravings on the stones that had been obscured by lichens and grime were once again legible after just a few minutes. One large obelisk, often used as a hunting perch by a red-tailed hawk, required a team all its own (Karen, Eleanor, Donna and Diane) to remove the first layers of grime. As sun, time

and cleaning agents work their magic, the white marble will once again dazzle the eye. The group’s next task was to straighten the three early gravestones that had tilted in the bumpy ground, heaved from many winters’ frosts. Barbara, Diane, Steve and Greg dug out and reset the stones using pea gravel and sand. Now George
Payne and his wife Betty’s markers are cleaned and standing tall. A fifth unmarked grave within the old fence remains a mystery, but the group has evidence that it is the grave of a female child. According to those taking part in the effort, May 9 was just the beginning of a long and arduous restoration effort.
They will continue to clean stones in the coming months, look for resources for building a new brick foundation for the fence, and work on finding someone to restore the fence. In the fall, the group will dig up the footstones, level the ground, reset the footstones and reseed the area. Contributed by NSDAR member Karen Mick

Garden more than just a place to get hands dirty By Roslyn Ryan Editor
The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul. — Alfred Austin For many years, after losing a beloved dog, I didn’t have much interest in gardening. I suppose I should explain: The dog I lost — a playful, mischievous mutt — had over the years become my constant gardening companion. And if her “help” wasn’t always appreciated (she loved to run off with my plastic pots, and would occasionally “un-plant” what I had just put in the ground), her company was. She was a puppy when I first began to create a tiny garden on the back deck of our house, and each year she and the garden got a little bigger. When I would sit on the deck and read, inhaling the scent of whatever was coming up at that moment, she was always at my feet. She was steadfast in her defense of tomatoes and peppers, barking fear into the hearts of any bird or squirrel that came near. The spring after I lost her, I found I didn’t feel much like planting anything. And if guests wondered why our deck was covered in empty clay pots and

unused garden tools, they didn’t ask. Promising myself again and again that I’d get back to it “next year,” I let several seasons pass. The pots sat. Weeds sprung up where there had been flowers. The bracket that had once held up a planter full of ornamental peppers rusted and sagged, then finally gave up the ghost and fell off the wall. In the end, it was only because a friend gave me a bunch of leftover plants from a plant sale that I decided it might be time to do a little digging. It didn’t take long before I was back in the swing of things — tentatively at first, then up to my elbows in soil. The garden is now back — more or less – and, as the spring rolls on, it grows bigger by the day. It is a place to get my hands dirty, to work things out, and to consider so many things lost and gained over the years. In short, it is a place to grow. If you happen to be one of the many county residents who keep a garden —no matter what size — I wish you many hours of enjoyment as the growing season unfolds. As for me, I’ll be keeping one eye on my plants and one on the dog who now tags along as I work. He likes to dig.

Goochland resident Patti Rosner will dedicate her Villages of Goochland painting series during the June 2 Goochland County Board of Supervisors meeting. The five paintings will then hang in the County Administration Building.
For Goochland artist, ‘Villages’ series was a true labor of love For two years, Goochland painter Patti Rosner has been working tirelessly on her Villages of Goochland project, an effort to tell the history of the county through the village life in each of its five districts. Now complete, her paintings will be dedicated at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, during the Goochland County Board of Supervisors meeting in the County Administration Building. Recently, Rosner chatted with The Goochland Gazette about the project’s origins, its challenges and what it felt like to paint that final brushstroke.
What inspired you to take on this project? The concept for this project goes back to the early 2000s, when the old Goochland High School was renovated and became the new Administration Building. Several local artists were called in by the
county administrator at the time to propose ideas for art for the halls of the building. My idea was to paint a history of our village past. The black and white photo collection from The Goochland Historical Society continued to inspire my idea.
Were you concerned at the beginning about how much work it would take to complete the series? I’ve done commissioned works for the past 15 years, and have always completed the projects in the contracted time frame. When I committed to this project I had no concerns, since I had a good track record. It soon became evident how different this project was. I created it because I had a passion for the subject and wanted to give back to my community. I was my own contractor . The project started to take on a life of its
own, and I chose to indulge in that. It was going to take whatever time and effort was necessary to see it to completion.
What kind of reaction have you received from the community? In the fall of 2013, I went to various community organizations doing presentations to promote the project. In this presentation phase, I explained how the project was to weave together art, history and community service. I showed the photos that would represent the districts. I also had examples of the products that I would sell to fund the project. I had painted my version of the iconic Courthouse from a late 1800s photograph. The painting was a demonstration to see how my see Rosner > page 7

continued from >6 art work would translate on the merchandise that would fund the project. I sold out of samples after the first presentation. That was an indication that I might be on the right track, and people were eager to see how their Village would be portrayed.
What has been the most challenging part of the project?
ished each painting, I would do a “soft unveil” at district town hall meetings and other district events. The sales from each event helped fund the next painting. One other commitment I chose to make when I created the project was to the community. After the costs of the project are paid for, the profits will benefit The Goochland Historical Society and Goochland Family Services.
What has been The most challenging part the most of the project was funding. rewarding part? While I had the support of the supervisors and county administrator, I had to fund the project. Fine tuning the merchandise was important. My goal was to keep the products affordable for people to support the project. As I fin-
One of the most rewarding parts was meeting the folks that shared their stories. Without the stories, the canvasses would have just been paintings of old photographs. As I listened to their stories, I imagined them in the village
setting going about their business. Not every story made it in the painting, but they helped create the “flavor” of the village life I was trying to capture.
What did it feel like to paint that final brush stroke?
Do you have a favorite village depicted in your series? My favorite was each painting, right after I finished it. Then the next one took its place! What I hope folks will take away from the project is that Goochland is a special place. As the county grows and develops, we need to pause and remember our past and mindfully move on to accommodate the future needs of the community in a responsible way. Folks need to stay engaged with their representatives, and remember that our officials have to listen and respond to all sides.

Playoffs begin for Bulldog teams No second chances as postseason progresses By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

oochland took full advantage of the last week of the regular season, fitting in two victories that secured the team’s number one seed entering this week’s district post-season play. Lunenburg starter Tyler Harding had a rough outing against the visitors, giving up six runs in the first inning. The starter gave up three walks, a hit batsman and three errors in the opening stanza. That’s all Bulldog starter Tanner Bradshaw would need as he worked four innings with only two hits allowed. Nick Norman provided the relief, pitching one inning and allowing only one hit. “Tanner pitched very well, only needing 45 pitches over four innings, and Nick Norman pitched the fifth inning, only needing nine pitches,” Goochland coach Wes Farkas said. “We took advantage of their miscues early and just kept adding runs.” But Goochland’s offense added six more, one in the second inning and five in the fourth inning to complete the Bulldogs’ tenth five-inning game of the sea-

on the field on the final day of the regular season. “Friday night was a great game,” Farkas said. “We went into the game trying to get some guys some innings on the mound and make sure they were battle-tested going into the playoffs,” he added. The Bulldogs used five pitchers to edge the Statesmen, 2-1, and fea-
tured Joe Cutchins in his first appearance on the mound. Cutchins picked up the win, and Norman again got the save. Scott Carter assumed his familiar role as team slugger, launching a massive shot over the left field fence in the third inning. Carter scored both Bulldog runs.
“Scott Carter came up big at the plate, hitting a solo home run, which proved to be the difference in the final score of the game,” Farkas said. The Bulldogs ended the regular season with a 17-2 record, the best in recent memory, and earned a bye in the first round of this week’s playoffs. Farkas said he knows it’s
all on the line with each game as post season moves on. “Our only focus right now is getting a win on Wednesday. If we don’t win that one, then we are done, so we can’t look past them,” the coach said. “With a win Wednesday, we would move see Bulldogs > 9
