Men sought in connection with robbery Three were seen fleeing after taking money from Broad Street pizza store By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A fond farewell
Goochland High School’s Class of 2015 marks the end of the line
Goochland County investigators continue to search for three men connected to a brazen daytime robbery at the Domino’s Pizza in the 1300 block of Broad Street Road on May 26. According to the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office, two men entered the store at around 2:15 p.m., displayed a handgun and demanded money. After obtaining the money, the two men fled the business on foot and were observed getting into a light colored four door sedan, which was see Robbery > 2

Goochland’s Bowles named the 2015 Citizen of the Year Award given by Virginia group in honor of his commitment to helping residents Contributed report
The National Association of Social Workers, Virginia Chapter has chosen Knight Bowles as the recipient of the 2015 Citizen of the Year Award for his Bowles outstanding service and dedication to the Goochland community. After retiring from a 27year career with U.S. Navy
Intelligence in 1985 and a Fredericksburg engineering firm in 1997, Bowles has devoted his time to working to help those in need of safe, accessible housing through the Goochland Chapter of Habitat for Humanity and the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services. Since 1997, he has helped build 20 homes through Habitat and nearly 80 ramps for GFCFS clients with physical limitations. He also is an active member in his local Rotary Club, which delivers loads of firewood for those who use it to heat their homes. He is a community leader who facilitates church and group volunteers to complete home repair projects and often undertakes small jobs with his own resources to help wherever he can. One of Bowles’ largest proj-
ects to date is the creation of two emergency shelter apartments on the grounds of GFCFS. These apartments have provided shelter for clients who would otherwise have been homeless, because they provide the only emergency housing for Goochland residents in need. Those who work with him and those whom he has helped have nominated him because he has had a profound and lasting impact on his community. The buildings that he has built stand as a reminder of how one person can be a positive force in society and truly support their community. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), in Washington, D.C., is the largest membership organization of professional social workers with 130,000 members.

Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) is being recognized on a national level for its efforts to improve the quality of care offered to county residents in need. The organization recently announced that it had received certification from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Goochland’s free clinic, GFCFS, is one of only two in Virginia to achieve this prominent recognition for the highest of standards for patient care. Last week, GFCFS executive director Sally Graham said she could not have been more
pleased with the news. “This has been a four-year effort to change and improve the quality of our care,” Graham said. “The most important goal was not to achieve recognition; it was to provide first-class care for our patients. This process allowed us to examine our systems and outcomes to make the changes needed to meet both goals.” The patient-centered medical home model emphasizes care coordination and communication in order to provide higher quality and lower costs. To earn recognition, which is valid for three years, GFCFS demonstrated the ability to meet and document compliance with the program’s key elements,
which focus on better access to care and improved quality. The standards include: Access to care through expanded hours such as evening hours once a week and same day appointments. Continuity of care with a consistent provider through regular staff and volunteer providers. Staff and volunteers working as a team to coordinate care, especially for prevention and chronic conditions. Care management focusing on specific populations and outcomes such as diabetes and hypertension. Providing patients with knowledge and tools to participate in their healthcare management.

Best advice for our new graduates? It’s OK to fail By Roslyn Ryan Editor
While hundreds of proud parents looked on last Friday, the members of Goochland High School’s 2015 graduating class marked one of the biggest milestones of their young lives so far. As each crossed the stage, many graduates were certainly walking toward dazzlingly successful careers in a wide variety of fields, from business, to law,
“There is no question that young people today face far more choices than their counterparts did a generation ago.” to medicine and beyond. No doubt, a number of them know exactly where they are headed. But I would guess that the vast majority of them are far less certain. And they need to know that’s alright. There is no question that young people today face far more choices and opportunities than their counterparts did a generation — or even a decade

— ago. And sifting through the many possibilities can quickly become overwhelming. But as these young men and women head out into the world, it will help them immensely to know that many people who have gone on to find great success in the world did not follow a linear path. They did not map out their lives in exacting detail and then follow that road with no detours along the way. They tried things. They failed, got up, then failed again. They learned from their mistakes, forgave themselves their shortcomings, and kept moving forward. “Success seems to be connected with action,” said Conrad Hilton, the famed hotelier (and great grandfather of Paris Hilton). “Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes but they don’t quit.” As our newly-minted grads head out into the world, let’s remind them that living life to the fullest sometimes means moving forward even when you are unsure of what lies ahead. Let s push them to try, celebrate their successes, and remind them that we often learn far more from our failures than anything else. Life is a journey. Dive in. Make mistakes. Enjoy the ride.

One quick question ... Sandy Hook resident Tammara Taylor, an honors student in the MBA program at Hampton University, has already demonstrated a knack for cracking the code to college success. We asked her what advice she would give incoming freshman as they head off to college …
“A
s a freshman, you have to be open to meeting new people. Even if you’re like me, a little on the shy side, step out your comfort zone and get to know the people. Also keep a close eye on your school account (class schedule, transcripts and financial statements) to make sure the school business office gets it straight. Lastly, start thinking about what you want to major in if you haven’t already. It’s OK if you’re not sure because an undecided major is available, but start researching now because you have to choose eventually. You want to be prepared and not rushed when that day comes.

Letter to the Editor County residents showed support for those who gave all Dear Editor, Goochland County came out in a big way this past Memorial Day to remember their war dead. It began in the early morning at West Creek with the Virginia Memorial Day 12k and 5K Run, Walk or Roll Race. The 800 participants gathered at the start line by the Purple Heart Truck, the National Anthem was sung by Abigail Price, a Godwin High School senior and the patriotic music was provided by Monacan High School band. Former POW Paul Galanti spoke movingly a in tribute to America’s military, there was the boom of a civil war cannon and the race began. This event benefited Families of the Wounded Fund Inc., which provides financial resources in support of family members/ caregivers of military service men and women who have either been wounded in combat operations, or
injured as a result of line-of-duty activities. Race medals were given out at the finish line by veterans and American flags were given to each participant by American Legion Auxiliary members from Goochland Post 215. Especially moving to the runners was the cemetery they ran by where crosses contained the name of deceased veterans. Assisted by the Goochland Sheriff’s Department, Manakin Co. 1 Fire Department, Richmond Strikers and over 100 volunteers, this inaugural event was a huge success. Moving on the Courthouse Green where the annual American Legion Memorial Day Ceremony began this year with a children’s parade open to those under 12 and lead by GHS JROTC members. The parade marched around the Green to patriotic music provided by the Henrico Concert Band. The marchers then led the Pledge to Allegiance. The Marine Corps JROTC Color Guard was on hand to present the colors. Guest of Honor Maj. Philip
True, a World War II B-29 navigator, spoke movingly to a crowd of approximately 500. America’s dead were honored with the laying of a wreath at the veterans monument while the POW/MIAs were remembered. The Marine Corps League Honor Guard provided the firing detail honors. After the ceremony visitors could look at the WWII and Korean era uniforms and equipment provided by a Korean war veteran or visit the Goochland Historical Society, which opened to visitors that morning. American Legion Post 215, which supported both events, would like to thank everyone for their support. American flags were prominently displayed and the Memorial Day poppy proudly worn, a fitting tribute to all veterans for their service. Memorial Day may seem like the unofficial kickoff to summer fun and picnics but in Goochland County last Monday the residents remembered what it is really about. Glimpse in side-view mirror offers hope for the future By Ron Spessard Contributing Writer
Unexpectedly, when we are truly watching, we can learn amazing things from the actions of our children — especially our younger children. We can see random acts of unbiased friendship and joy. Simply look. This was such a moment ‌ Done! Long day. No, a long week! But, a good one. Worked hard, resolved prob-
lems, thanked my staff, and left the office. The third quarter profits were going to come in very strong. Beautiful September evening; clear, sunny, warm, zero humidity and a great time to drive home with the top down. I took off my suit jacket, threw it over my shoulder, loosened my tie, and put on sunglasses. Fun car! All black full-size Chevy Cavalier convertible with a light grey interior; the last year GM would make a
convertible in that model. Even now, traffic in Northern Virginia was heavy, so I took some back streets and finally came out on Shreve Road, which ran parallel to the Old Dominion Railroad and bike path. Trees lined both sides of the narrow road and a late evening summer breeze was blowing through the leaves. Just up ahead, I noticed two young elementary school girls walking, skipping, and holding hands.
Their arms were swinging high into the air, hands still clasped, stopping only briefly to look at each other, then laughing and giggling the way only young girls can. The breeze played havoc with long strawberry blonde curls and even longer straight black shiny hair, seemingly raveling and unraveling magically, highlighted in sunlight as they walked along together. A white girl and an Asian girl, happy, natural, obvious good friends! I was so struck by this beautiful scene. I did not
know them, had never seen them before, and, yet, in that instant, I wanted to protect and preserve that moment; that snapshot in time. For them. For me. For all of us! That moment represented what we all could and should be; what we all could and should feel. They were close to the road, so I honked the horn slightly, and, as they jumped to the side of the road together, they laughed, jumped up and down, and waved as I drove

past. I could not stop smiling. I did not want that perfect picture, that perfect moment to vanish. I needed to make a sharp right hand turn, but, just before, I took a glance back through my side-view mirror. There, framed perfectly, still skipping, arms swinging high in the air, still laughing, the two girls etched themselves into my memory and had me smiling all the way home. Teams move on in postseason play Four Goochland teams advance to regionals By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
W
ith the exception of the final game of the season, Goochland’s boys varsity baseball team had a relatively easy run through the second half of the schedule. The team recorded 10 fiveinning victories during the season and that means the games weren’t close. That also means the Bulldogs weren’t stresstested entering last week’s Conference 34 playoffs. That all changed when Bluestone put five runs on the
board in the first inning of the conference playoff game. “It was a good test of our tenacity,” said Goochland coach Wes Farkas. The team didn’t panic, scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the opening inning, and leveling the game in the second, benefiting from a string of walks from Bluestone starter Matthew Owen. Bulldog starter Tanner Bradshaw was relieved early by Coleman Duty, who shut down the Barons for the remainder of the game, allowing only four singles and no runs while striking out six. Duty also made his contribution at the plate with two hits and two runs scored. “It was not the start we had planned,” said Farkas, regarding the first inning. “They were aggressive and
sitting on the first pitch, and they got a lot of hits early. When Tanner is aggressive in the strike zone and you have aggressive batters, you’ll either get pop-ups or hits,” he added. Farkas said he appreciated the team’s ability to come back from adversity. “We addressed that in the dugout as soon as we got down,” he said. “We haven’t been in that situation a lot this year but the guys showed a lot of composure. We chipped away at them.” Bradshaw reached on a fielder’s error in the third inning followed by a Duty hit. Colby Noel cleared the bases with a solid shot to the left center gap. Leading 7-5, Duty did the rest and the Bulldogs advanced see GHS > 13

GHS continued from >12 to the conference championship against Nottoway on May 28. In a lightning-delayed game, Goochland prevailed 2-1 over the Cougars to win the title. The Bulldogs scored first when Andrew Harcum reached on a triple and Duty sacrifice flied him home. Nottoway tied the game in

the top of the sixth inning, but the Bulldogs answered in the home half with a single run that made the score 2-1. Nick Norman got the start and pitched four flawless innings, and Chase Doczi and Joe Cutchins came on in relief. The girls’ soccer team posted wins over Prince Edward to advance to Regionals. They played Northampton in the first round on June 1. The boys also advanced,

playing Bruton in the first round of Regionals on June 2. The softball team continues its drive to the championship with two wins and a conference title, recording a win against Nottoway and an 8-3 victory over Bluestone. They hosted Nandua in the first round of Regionals on June 2. All four teams – boys and girls soccer and softball and baseball – move on to Region 2A play this week.
