For Goochland’s top students of 2015, ensuring success in the classroom often meant finding effective — and sometimes creative — ways to balance their school work with countless other responsibilities and commitments. And year after year, from the first class of their freshman year on to their recent graduation day, the four students rose to the occasion. They studied hard — rarely getting less than an A in anything — but also found time to volunteer, participate in sports, and hold part-time jobs. Goochland High School valedictorian Meghan Edwards, who finished her high school career with a grade point average of 4.6, said staying busy was actually a big contributor to her success. Edwards juggled a course load jampacked with advanced placement classes — and a psychology course at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College that she took through her school’s dual enrollment program — with the demands of playing both volleyball and softball. Paradoxically, she said, “I really found see Graduates > 4

After graduating with a 4.3 grade point average, Frick also plans to attend the University of Virginia in the fall. He plans to major in either computer science or computer engineer-

To Frick, success in high school came down to working hard and avoiding excuses, both strategies he would recommend to any incoming freshman looking to excel. “Overall, just work hard,” Frick said. Whether in sports or in the classroom, “if you put in the work you will see results.”

Show offers chance to enjoy slice of country life By Roslyn Ryan Editor

“Horses change lives. They give out young people confidence and self-esteem. They provide peace and tranquility to troubled souls, they give us hope.” – Toni Robinson Horseshow “Horses make a landscape look beautiful.” – Alice Walker This week the annual Deep Run Horse Show will once again take over the Deep Run Hunt Club grounds in Manakin Sabot, offering attendees a chance to watch area riders show off their skills and compete for thousands in prize money. This will be the 60th anniversary of the show, all the more reason to head out to Deep Run and celebrate the age-old relationship between horse and rider. Few will argue that there is something truly majestic about a horse, whether the animal in question is grazing in a field, cantering around a ring, or barreling, as the magnificent specimens in the Belmont Stakes recently did, toward the finish line. In the interest of full disclosure, I feel I must say this: I have always had — and still maintain

— a mild fear of horses. Those who have been around horses all their lives are certainly forgiven for not understanding my apprehension, but any animal bigger than my car will never fail to arouse in me a certain wariness. Still, I am very much looking forward to attending my first show and witnessing the pageantry of the event, as well as the impressive skill of the riders who take part in the competitions. If you can make it out at any point between today and Sunday, when the show closes, you’ll have the opportunity to be a part of an event that showcases country living at its most regal. Hope to see you there. *** Somewhere, in a box in my attic, is a well-worn scrapbook. ‘Black’ was dedicated member of Goochland Sheriff’s Office By Jim Agnew Goochland County Sheriff

G

oochland Sheriff’s Department canine Black died Friday afternoon. He had just retired from service and was living comfortably in Sgt. Greg Bock’s house when he developed a seizure. Black stopped breathing as Greg rushed him to the vet’s office. Black was a steady, strong, resolute, and loyal member of the Goochland Sheriff’s Office staff. He served ably for more than seven years, all of them at Greg’s side. Black was tough and loud. More than once, he made a visitor to the office jump when he challenged someone who got too close to Greg’s vehicle. He snarled and clawed at the sides of his enclosure trying to get at the unwary and sounding very much like the attack dog he was. We’ll never really know the extent to which Black’s presence prevented harm to Greg or the other deputies. He was very determined and sometimes absolutely menacing. But, I do know that I was very thankful when, in December 2013, Black went into a house in which an armed man had barricaded himself, relieving us of the duty of having to go in to face him. The event ended tragically with the man’s suicide, but Black made that situation much safer for all of us. Black had a softer side as well. He could be extremely affectionate; he liked dog biscuits, and he loved to be rubbed. As long as he didn’t

Graduates offer county much to celebrate Dear Editor, After three and a half years on the board I was finally able to attend this year’s Goochland High School graduation in Charlottesville. The schedule in recent years had not been very cooperative. When I arrived at John Paul Jones arena an usher asked me if she could help me, so I told her I was looking for a seat and she asked

me to follow her. As we walked down the long corridors she told me that she’s been working graduations for many years and she had never seen such a nice group of kids. She said they were polite, well mannered and well dressed. She asked me if I was a parent, so I said no and told her who I was. She then told me that I should feel very proud of our county and our schools. I sat alone in a section where I didn’t know many people, but I felt

like a proud parent. The ceremony that followed could only add to the positive impression our students made on that usher. Thanks to the Moms, Dads and Teachers who helped raise and educate a wonderful group of students. I am proud to call you neighbors. Manuel Alvarez Jr. District 2 Supervisor see Letters > 6

Ask Fern A Hot weather doesn’t need to mean forsaking style Dear Fern, I am having a bit of a fashion crisis and am hoping you can offer some helpful advice. I recently found out that a very good friend is getting married in Miami in July and my husband and I have been invited to attend the wedding. We are staying there for the week and plan on doing some sightseeing and trying out some nice restaurants. The problem, however, is that for the last several years I have gotten away from spending much time or energy on my clothes. I work from home, so I rarely wear anything other than loungewear during the day, and even when I go out of the house it is usually in jeans and an old shirt. Fern, I would love to look nice during our

trip, but I m not sure where to even begin to update my look. Can you offer a few suggestions for summer wardrobe staples that will allow me to look polished and put-together while still staying (mostly) comfortable? Dear “Hot In Miami, First word of advice: Cotton! It gets a bit warm in Miami in summer. Light and breezy attire will keep you looking and staying cool. Separates such as a boat neck top and white capris will get you out and about in style. A pretty floral sundress will take you from a hip lunch spot to chic dining so I recommend that if you do not have one, invest. And don’t forget that strand of pearls! It will be a reliable accessory day or night. Shoes can make an outfit shine and speak volumes for your taste and style

as well, so you may want to spring for a comfortable but sassy pair of flats and a sparkly new pair of sandals. I’m getting excited for you and this leads me to share wardrobe advice for the whole purpose of your trip — the wedding! Although proper etiquette states that invitations should not mention a dress code, allow the invitation to give you clues. Time of day or evening, as well as location, will indicate the level of formality. Then, just know that from extremely casual to black tie, you cannot go wrong with elegant and timeless styles such as empire waist, one-shoulder and vintage-inspired dresses in tea or ankle lengths. Think sunset colors from blues to purples to corals and then select whichever of these hues looks best with your skin tone. So now that we have your “street clothes laid out, we mustn’t forget the beach! Make room for a fun, wide-

brimmed hat, classic halter bathing suit, posh pair of sunglasses, and a pretty, white eyelet cover-up. Pop on a great shade of lipstick and you’re all set for beautiful sunrises, unforgettable sunsets and fun in the sand. Bon voyage! Mrs. SmithCole is a wife, mother (of three), interior designer and active member in the Goochland Woman’s Club. Have a question for Fern? Send it to editor@ goochlandgazette.com.

Relay continued from >1 effort. “The storm kind of threw us off,” Sprouse said, “but we’re doing it. We’re getting it done.” The largest annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life is a community-based effort in which participants walk — usually around a track — for up to 12 hours. Walking alongside Sprouse on Saturday, sporting a colorful pompom headband, was Ruthie Whitehead. A long-time Relay participant, Whitehead has come up with a few novel ways to keep things interesting. When energy levels look to be flagging, she and Sprouse blow whistles as they make their laps. When they tire of walking forward, they walk backward. And when the heat begins to get to them—temperatures on Saturday soared into the 90s—they stage a “Frozen T-shirt Contest,” changing into shirts they have stashed in a cooler. To Relay organizer Val Pace, participants’ creative touches are all part of what makes Relay special. And while turnout was admittedly down this year, Pace reported happily that donations had actually held steady. On Saturday, by around 4:30 p.m., the group had already raised around $12,000. Pace said she and the other organizers were incredibly thankful or the assistance of the county in helping to make this year’s Relay a success, and also for the help provided by the Department of Corrections. Pace said she thought the weather may have kept some away from this year’s event, but there were still plenty of walkers pounding the track. Gary Fischer said he was walking to honor his grandmother and his mother, both of whom are cancer survivors. By the end of the day, he had logged 10 miles. As is tradition, many chose to make Relay a team sport. Gathered under a tent to escape the rain, members of the Mount Gilead Purple Hearts team spent the afternoon selling raffle tickets for a handmade quilt and preparing for their wildly popular cake walk. The Purple Hearts hold the record for collecting the most money in Goochland Relay for Life history, and also another distinction as well: team member Sophia Pryor, 91, has taken part in every Relay event since 1995. She doesn’t walk like she used to, Pryor often says, but she still walks. To date, Goochland’s Relay effort has raised over $34,000 to support the fight against cancer.

Bernstine a state champ! Wrestling coming to GHS By Mike Schoeffel Sports Editor

L

ast weekend at Radford University, Goochland High School’s Chase Bernstine rolled Maggie Walker’s Karl Katlaps – 6-3, 6-0 – to capture

the Group 2A tennis singles state championship. Bernstine, only a sophomore, was also the state runner-up in doubles with teammate Joey Webb. The duo lost to Katlaps and Pierce Tarry of Maggie Walker – 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 – in the championship match.

To reach the championship bout, Bernstine and Webb crushed a duo from John S. Battle – 6-2, 6-1 – in the state semifinal. With a state title now under his belt, Berstine becomes the first player in school history with an opportunity to become a three-time state champion.

Newest varsity sport to begin competition this winter By Mike Schoeffel Sports Editor

S

tarting at the end of this year, there will be a new sport on the winter athletic docket at

Goochland High School. Wrestling, which was a club sport last year at GHS, will enjoy full time varsity status this winter. The mats and the leotards have already arrived on campus. Now the countdown to the start of the season begins. “I have been aware of a tremendous interest in wrestling since I arrived at the high school three years ago,” said GHS principal Mike Newman. “We responded to the interest...by having a wrestling club last year and

the funding was achieved this year.” The Bulldogs will be coached by Kenny Bouwens, and will look to knock off Cumberland High School, the defending James River District champions, when they take the mat for the first time this winter. Cumberland sent three wrestlers to the state tournament last season. “We’re excited to have wrestling come to Goochland High School,” said Newman.

The Goochland High School boys tennis duo of Chase Bernstine (left) and Joey Webb finished second in doubles in Group 2A, handily beating a team from John S. Battle in the semifinal before falling in the championship match to Maggie Walker. Bernstine, however, captured a state title in singles.

The official team-colored mats have also arrived on campus, officially kicking off the countdown to the much-anticipated inaugural season. “We’re excited to have wrestling come to Goochland our Collegiate School Scott Award, which recognizes Devoe, Carson Pinney, Clay High School,” said GHS principal Mike Newman. The Bulldogs will be coached by Kenny Bouwens.

Four Cougars named All-American Rusbuldt, Walker, Golladay, Brewer among nation’s elite By Mike Schoeffel Sports Editor

F

lacrosse players have been named to U.S. All-American team. Jack Rusbuldt and Strib Walker were included on the boys team, while K.K. Golladay and Campbell Brewer were named to the girls team. Rusbuldt and Walker were two of six Virginia players named to the boys team, while Golladay and Brewer were two of three Richmond players named to the girls team. Walker also received the Bob

a player in each area who “goes above and beyond in service to his team, school, and community. This player exemplifies the fundamentals of lacrosse, works hard to improve his game and is a leader both on and off the field.” Additionally, Andrew Slanley, head coach of the boys team, was selected as Coach of the Year. Sam Somers was named to the boys AllAmerican Academic team, while Golladay, Catherine

Bowden, and Claire Tate were named to the girls AllAmerican Academic team. According to the U.S. Lacrosse press release, “A U.S. Lacrosse All-American is a player who exhibits superior skills and techniques and possesses exceptional game sense and knowledge. A U.S. Lacrosse All-American is one of the best players in the United States, while also embodying excellent sportsmanship.”

Correction • In the spring sports wrap-up that appeared in the June 4 edition, one of the Goochland High School boys soccer players was misdentified. His name is Ricky Gordon, not Andrew Boyers. The Goochland Gazette regrets this mistake.

Attention all athletes: The end of high school sports is not ‘The End’ With graduation, the magic of high school athletics has officially come to end for many area athletes – but that doesn’t mean it’s all over By Mike Schoeffel Sports Editor

T

here’s something indescribably magical about high school sports, a sort of intimate enchantment that is rarely replicated at any level of competition later in life. In high school, athletes represent an institution they spend 35-40 hours a week at, and in some instances a county they have lived in for the better part of their upbringing – if not their entire childhood. Parents and siblings and significant others wait in the stands to give hugs after the final out or after the last few seconds tick off the clock. Most players, when they glance in the dugout or down the sideline, can pick out at least a few teammates they’ve played with or against since their days in youth leagues. That’s a special feeling, and it’s one that’s sometimes hard for athletes to recognize during the weekly droning routine of practices and games and training sessions. Life flattens out, become normalized, dulls from daily, weekly, monthly, repetition. It’s not until it all comes to an end that reflection about one’s history with the sport truly begins. Over the past few weeks, countless high school athletes across the county of Goochland played in their final prep sporting event. In the moment when the final out was recorded, or the last seconds ticked off the clock, a strange rush of nostalgic feelings almost certainly came flooding on. Thoughts of “Wow, this is it. It’s really all coming to an end” cross the mind, accompanied by a strong bittersweet mood elicited by the realization that a major chapter in one’s life has reached it’s conclusion.

As symbolic as the last game of a high school athlete’s career may be, sports rarely end right-there-at-that-point. Athletics, for those who get into them early, are often a lifelong love affair. Some graduating seniors will go on to play collegiately in varying capacities – Division I, Division III, varsity, club, intramural – and some will enter into the world of coaching further down the road. Others will become athletic trainers, athletic directors, and even sports writers (God help these poor fools). And of course there are plenty of softball leagues and pick-up basketball and soccer get-togethers and other athletic outlets in the world at large that nourish an athlete’s eternal post-high school need for competition and camaraderie. If you’re like me (I played football and baseball in high school), these vessels for athletic expression will fill a void, at least partially so, while simultaneously gratifying something visceral and necessary. Every time I walk on the field it feels like the right thing to do, like I’m honoring some deep and authentic part of myself. I imagine it’s the same feeling an actor experiences when he/she steps on stage, or a painter experiences as he/ she takes a seat in front of a canvas – a sense of being totally at peace with one’s surroundings, of being right where one belongs. These feelings of communion with the Sporting Gods, if you will, are addicting and essential and calming, and while I don’t think they will ever totally fade away they certainly reach a sort apex at the high school level. It’s the truth: ask any former prep athlete – even those who went on to have successful college careers– and I guarantee most will tell you that there was nothing quite as fulfilling as playing for the hometown team, in front of people you love, day after day, week-afterweek. And why is that? Perhaps it has something to do with the wide-and-glossy-eyed nature of youth. Teenagers have that blithe and slightly naïve sort of tunnel-like focus that makes high school athletics seem, at the time of their undertaking, of deathly importance. This focus tends to diminish over time as perspective expands. A contrast to prove an example: When I

played high school sports, though, external distractions were pretty much non-existent. My parents did my worrying for me, which meant my mind was free to think about nothing more than winning this game right here, right now. I was able to block out any worries I had pretty easily, because in my narrowed adolescent mind there was nothing more important than playing well and winning the game. Every touchdown pass made me feel like Joe Montana, every home run like Babe Ruth. It all seems very surreal, when I look back on it now. When I play church softball or some other sport now, at age 26, hundreds of extraneous thoughts run through my head within the course of an inning – financial woes, car problems, family issues, et cetera and so forth. Winning’s important, sure, but relatively insig-

nificant when placed in the grander context of life at large. So to all the senior athletes out there, at Collegiate, Benedictine, St. Catherine’s, and Goochland High, congratulations on making it this far. I hope you’ve have carpe diem’ed the heck out of your varsity career. If you choose to play in college, I wish you the best of luck. If not, I encourage you to at least pick up an intramural sport, because if you’ve been playing sports your entire life, you’ve developed a sort of unconscious need for competition, and if you don’t do something to satisfy that need, you will most likely feel a nagging sort of absence. And remember – just because it’s the end of one chapter of your life doesn’t mean it’s The End. There’s more to come. Trust me on this one.

GG: What do you find most challenging about teaching? KA: For me the most the challenging thing about teaching is finding time to do all the things I want to do for my class each day. When each day ends, I think of many other things that I could have done. I am a thinker and I am constantly striving to do things better and find ways to meet my kids’ needs.

and emulate qualities that fit my teaching style. I have learned lots from my teacher friends.

GG: What is one other piece of advice you would give young teachers starting out?

KA: I often encourage young teachers to be positive with their students and develop meaningful relationships with their parents. Having a partnership with GG: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given your students and their families can be the most important ingredient to a about teaching? KA: The best advice that I have received did not recipe for success in the classroom. necessarily come from one person, it is gleaned from a variety of colleagues. Over my years of GG: If you were not teaching, teaching, I have observed teachers that I admire what might you be doing?

KA: If I were not a teaching I would like to work in the children’s section at a bookstore. I love children’s literature.

ENTERTAINING: Recipes, Tips and Advice

Grilling is perfect way to serve up fresh veggies O ne of the highlights of the summer season is the incredible bounty of fresh produce, and grilling these vegetables gives them a smoky, delicious dimension. Chef BBQ Naz, a grilling expert from Broil King, shares some simple tips for flavor perfection.

Don’t leave vegetables unattended. 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, minced Vegetables are delicate and can easily over- 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, freshly grated cook if not monitored. Grill extras. Leftover grilled vegetables are great in soups, salads, sandwiches and on pizzas and pasta.

When grilling vegetables, consider this When preparing vegetables, slice popular recipe. them to expose as much of the vegetable Grilled Zucchini Rolls to the grill surface as you can. Ingredients 3 medium zucchinis, sliced 1/4-inch thick, Coat vegetables with olive oil before lengthwise placing them on the grill. This will help 1 tablespoon olive oil prevent them from sticking to the grill. 4 ounces chevre (soft goat cheese), at room temperature Use the right tool for the job. Pinch of freshly ground black pepper Accessories like grill toppers and skewers Pinch of kosher salt are perfect for keeping smaller foods like 2 tablespoons sun-dried tomatoes, oilcherry tomatoes and onions from rolling packed and minced around or falling through the grate. 1 teaspoon oil from the sun-dried tomatoes

Directions Preheat the grill on medium. Brush both sides of sliced zucchini with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Place on the grill and cook for 4 minutes per side. When cooked, set on a wire rack to cool. In a small bowl, combine the chevre, salt, pepper, sun-dried tomatoes, oil and thyme. Using a small spatula, spread the cheese mixture thinly over one side of the zucchini. Lightly roll the zucchini, and place seam side down on a small, parchmentlined baking sheet. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Place baking sheet on top rack of the grill for 15 minutes. Remove to a platter and serve. Metro Creative

The Great Outdoors

Ready to grill? Be sure to keep it safe

T

he warm weather is finally here, so it’s time to get ready for that first backyard barbecue bash. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these important tips for a safe, seamless summer soiree (try saying that three times quickly!)

Outdoor gas barbecues

Before firing up the grill for the first time, carefully inspect burners and burner tubes for blockages due to dirt, grease, insects or rust build-up. Clean or replace any blocked parts with certified replacement parts (or have a licensed technician do it). Check for cracked, brittle or leaking hoses by applying a 50/50 solution of soap and water to hoses and fittings. Turn on the main gas or propane valve while leaving burners off. Any leaks will show up as bubbles. Replace any damaged hoses or fittings. Propane cylinders must be inspected and re-qualified every 12 years in the United States. A date stamp on the cylinder indicates when it was last qualified. Do not use a rusty or damaged cylinder. If in doubt, replace your tank. Keep grills and barbecues away from combustible materials such as fences, trees, buildings, awnings and carports. No matter how hard it’s raining, never use a barbecue in a garage.

Decorative lighting

It’s time to remove the holiday lights. These lights are designed to be temporary and can be a fire hazard if left out too long. When installing decorative lighting on patios or along walkways, inspect the packaging and electrical cords to make sure that it’s certified and marked for use in an outdoor or wet location. Turn off the electricity supply before the work begins and unplug lights when possible.

Metro Creative photo

Grilled vegetables, including those served on skewers, are an easy way to add flavor and nutrients to your summer dinner table.

Carefully inspect lights and lamps to make sure there are no broken or cracked. Metro Creative
