Locals’ book celebrates area love of cycling
“[Attending Sweetbriar] was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It was such a beautiful place. It was just perfect.” —Goochland Middle School Principal Jennifer Rucker
Project offers look at history of sport in advance of coming international championships By Roslyn Ryan Editor
In advance of the upcoming 2015 UCI Road World Championships, a premier nine-day cycling event that will take over Richmond this September, several Goochland residents have come together for a project that will celebrate the area’s long-time love affair with cycling. Goochland’s Aynsley Miller Fisher and Richmondbased cycling enthusiast Tom Houff will officially launch the updated edition of their book, On Richmond’s Wheel, this Saturday during a release party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. The book, which details Richmond’s cycling history dating back to the Fisher Lakeside Wheel Club (now Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens), features 112 pages of vivid photos and rich history, with a forward by World Tour cyclist Ben King. In addition, the book offers a look at the future of cycling in the area and the likely impact of the UCI event on its popularity in the area. Houff For Houff, the book was both a labor of love and a learning experience. “I had difficulty finding anything about cycling until I began to read the old newspapers,” said Houff, 51, who still competes in cycling events. That’s when I realized American history has a huge gap in its understanding of transportation history. Richmond helped pioneer cycling and transportation because the city was trying to heal from see Cycling > 2

A sweet A victory indeed Local Sweetbriar College alumnus celebrating school’s plan to keep doors open
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland educator is among the many celebrating the news that Virginia’s Sweetbriar College will remain open, after a judge approved a settlement to keep the school going for another year . Goochland Middle School Principal Jennifer Rucker, one of three Sweetbriar alumni working at GMS, called the development “a huge victory” for those who had been fighting for several months to save the school. Rucker, who graduated from the small women’s college in 1996, said she was devastated when she first heard the news in March that her alma mater would be shuttered due to what was widely described as a combination of declining enrollment and financial mismanagement. see Sweetbriar > 3

County students earn GRASP awards “GRASP is delighted to be able to assist students in achieving their postsecondary education dreams, and our Last Dollars Scholarships often help cover the gap in costs between a school’s financial aid package and the total amount of money that is needed to attend that particular school.,” Bob Holsworth, Chairman, GRASP Board of Directors, said. “We are especially grateful for our supporters and donors who make
these scholarships possible. The Last Dollar Scholarships are another avenue GRASP uses to ensure that every student has an equal opportunity for continuing education after high school.” Supported by individual, foundation and business donations, GRASP has advisors in 76 public and private schools throughout Virginia and provides services and scholarship assistance, free of charge, to students and their families. Sweetbriar continued from >1 Having the opportunity to attend Sweetbriar “was one of the best things that ever happened to me,” Rucker said several weeks ago, as she prepared to attend a reunion at the school. Calling the college her “second home,” Rucker explained that Sweetbriar’s role in her life—and in her family’s story—began years before she ever enrolled there. Rucker grew up in Amherst, just a few miles from where Sweetbriar was founded in 1906, and her mother worked in the college’s cafeteria for 40 years. Rucker attended preschool there as a young child, and some of her earliest memories are of Sweetbriar’s manicured grounds and iconic bell
well as toys, books, videos, children’s furniture and like items, baby equipment, maternity goods, and home school materials. The deadline to consign is July 24. Those who volunteer at the sale shop will be able to shop early as a bonus. After

tower. “It was such a beautiful place,” Rucker remembered. “It was just perfect.” While Rucker had not initially planned to attend the school herself — a star volleyball player in high school, she was recruited by Division I programs across the country — her eventual decision to enroll is one she said she has never regretted for a moment. Rucker said her heart went out to the young women whose college experiences had been upended by the school’s plans to close. It was in part for them, Rucker said, that she and so many other alumni had been fighting both in the courts and in the media to make sure that the school stayed open. As news reports continue to detail the alleged financial mismanagement that some
say was responsible for the school’s demise, Rucker says she finds it difficult not to look back in anger at how the situation might have been avoided. She was most bothered by what she viewed as a lack of transparency on the part of the college’s leadership. “Imagine what we could have done had we known [about the financial problems] 10 years ago,” Rucker said. “That’s the heartbreak.” Naturally, Rucker and the many others who had been fighting to save Sweetbriar were ecstatic over the recent turn of events, and they are looking forward to helping write the school’s next chapter. “Now it’s time to work,” Rucker said. “There is lots to do and I’m willing to help any way that I can, just like all other alumnae.”

Benefit will honor life of man killed in crash By Roslyn Ryan Editor
One local restaurant is committed to helping the family of a young man killed in a motorcycle crash on May 31. According to 250 Sports Grill owner Jeff Ottaviano, who will host a benefit this Friday for the family of Goochland resident Sean Harris, Harris was a longtime patron of the restaurant and was well-known to both the owners and customers. Harris was killed when he
lost control of the motorcycle he was driving on Hawk Town Road, and left behind two children, a 4 year old son and a 1 year old daughter. “When Sean and I would talk about his kids, a smile would stretch across his face, and you could see the pride and happiness,” Ottaviano said. “He would proudly show us all pictures of them at every chance.” Harris had recently been certified as a Freight Conductor for CSX, Ottaviano said, and was excited about the life he would
soon be able to provide for his kids. Friday’s event will be held from 11 a.m. to closing, with a party planned to celebrate Harris’s life beginning at 9 p.m. and featuring music from DJ Swirl. All proceeds from the event will be placed in a trust fund for Harris’s children. Those who can’t make it to 250 Sports Grill on Friday may make a donation at any Wells Fargo to the Sean Harris Memorial Trust Fund or bring in a check or cash at any time

Many officers continue to go above and beyond By Roslyn Ryan Editor
When it comes to public image, law enforcement organizations across the country have been taking a bit of a beating in recent months. And this seems profoundly unfair. As is the case with any other profession, there are members of the law enforcement community who commit egregious acts. There are those who make inexcusable mistakes, who ignore their training, and who forget the oath they took to protect and serve. But then there are the officers like the one I happened to see on a news report the other day, a long-time veteran of a police force in Washington state who came upon an elderly woman riding her motorized scooter down the side of a highway (clearly lost and far from where she needed to be). Thanks to the officer’s dashboard camera, viewers were able to see him treat the woman with dignity, respect and patience, then follow her the several miles back to her home — at a pace of four miles per hour. Of course, you don’t have to travel that far to find stories like this. I’m sure many of our read-

ers have a story of local officers going above and beyond the call of duty. Law enforcement officers these days are often asked to intervene in situations — particularly those related to domestic violence and mental health — in which sensitivity and good judgment are paramount. Though their actions are not often lauded, there are undoubtedly countless times each day when an officer’s humanity and compassion is the only thing that prevents an already bad situation from being much worse. Most of the deputies and troopers will tell you in cases like these that they were just doing their job, that it was nothing special. But it does take a special person to get up every day, put on a uniform, and wade into the kinds of situations most of us gladly avoid. They are asked to handle the people no one else can, go into places no one else wants to, and see things most of us would never ever choose to see. It takes a toll, no doubt, but they continue to serve. If you have a story about local law enforcement, send it our way. And if you happen to see a deputy or trooper today, find a way to say “Thank you.” Lord knows they’ve earned it.

Newest fire-rescue members honored A
large crowd packed the Board of Supervisors meeting room last Wednesday as the Goochland County Fire-Rescue took time out to recognize the accomplishments of some of its members. Family and friends gathered for the graduation ceremony of those members who in the past 15-months have completed Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Emergency Medical Technician Training. Each of these classes requires the students to devote many hours of classroom and practical time. All together these students spent over 4,000 hours volunteering their time to receive specialized training to give them the knowledge and skills necessary to serve the citizens of Goochland County. The graduates have all received their badges signifying their accomplishments and their commitment to the community. In addition, they were administered the Oath of Office, which is required for them to legally perform the duties of their position.
Looking back on generations of love By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I only saw my father cry once in the brief years I spent with him. He had just received news that his father had passed away in Montgomery, Alabama, and he was on the phone checking for a flight South to attend the funeral. There were several problems. First, he was a committed non-flyer as the result of a close call during his time in the U.S. Army. Complicating his hesitancy to fly was the cost and timing of the flights. We recently had purchased a set of World Book Encyclopedias, forcing a tight budget for a few months. As fate would have it, my grandfather’s death occurred shortly after we got the new books. The introduction of the books excited my
sister and me, and I liken the experience to a kid with his first computer in today’s terms. After speaking with his mother, he did not attend the funeral, a decision I know he regretted. As a small child, I’d known my grandfather as a caring old man who took great pleasure in spoiling his grandchildren. He was the only adult who would give a child a slice of watermelon that rivaled the recipient’s height and weight. He always had a pocketful of candy and was never hesitant to distribute a handful to his many grandchildren. Years later, I would understand what my father felt that night. Not many years later I would be feeling the same thoughts as we planned his premature funeral. My grandfather immigrated to
the United States at the age of 12, a small unaccompanied little boy from Corsica whose mother feared for his future on the small island. He landed in New York and traveled to Philadelphia to stay with family friends who eventually arranged for his trip southward to Montgomery and more family friends. Too short to see over the counter, he opened his first lunch counter at age 15, and eventually opened The Pickwick Cafe, a Montgomery institution for decades. Less than five feet tall, my grandfather raised eight boys and a girl as he ran his restaurant, with a more than ample amount of help from my grandmother. As a father and grandfather, he had the unique quality to make see Letters > page 7

Meiller named Teacher of the Year Byrd Elementary School kindergarten teacher Marcy Meiller was recently named one of Goochland’s Teachers of the Year for 2015. A 17-year teaching veteran—and a graduate of Goochland County Public Schools-- Meiller recently talked with the Gazette about her family’s extensive background in education, her passion for working with students, and the one thing she’s still working on.

Principal James Hopkins congratulated Marcy Meiller after announcing her win as Byrd Elementary’s Teacher of the Year.
What do you enjoy about teaching? There are so many things I enjoy about teaching, but what I love the most is experiencing the growth and progress the children make from the beginning of the school year to the end of the school year. It is incredible to me. I also love seeing their little faces light up when they
understand something that was not clear before. When the children express excitement about what is being taught, it is truly rewarding.
What do you find most challenging about teaching?
What is one piece of advice you would give young teachers just starting out? When someone offers help, take it! (I need to follow my own advice…ha!)

Love
had their roots in relationships we enjoyed with our fathers. As I enjoyed my Father’s Day with three of my children at my side, and another a heartbeat away in the Caribbean, I can now appreciate the loss my father felt that night. It wouldn’t be long before I felt the same grief when he left us so suddenly a couple of years later. My only hope is that, as a father, I can continue a legacy that began long ago, when a small 12-year-old boy boarded a ship headed for the United States, and our future … and a continuing chain of love began.

As I look back, it’s clear where our family’s clear sense of commitment and dedication to the ones they love originated. And, as I look back on the evening so many years ago as I watched my father with his heartfelt grief, I understand why. Fathers leave an indelible mark on the children they raise, an impression that doesn’t dull with time. The wisdom and judgment many of us depend on today

What made you decide to become a teacher? I was surrounded by educators growing up. My grandmother (I call her Mamoo) was a 2nd grade teacher for 25 years, and my Aunt Judy is retiring this year after 30 years of teaching kindergarten in Chesterfield County. My mother is a professional children’s entertainer better known as Betsy Q., and she has been performing for children for 25 years. I have another aunt, Aunt Ann, who was also a teacher in North Carolina for many years and is now working part-time on the Eastern Shore as an intervention specialist for children who are not meeting reading benchmarks. I was destined to become a teacher of young children! It is in my blood! During the summers as a college student, I began working as an Assistant Teacher at a summer creative arts

Post 201 off to hot start of the third, exploding for 11 runs to bury the visitors from Richmond in a continuous parade around the base paths. Post 125F continued to struggle throughout the contest, committing five errors. Meanwhile Post 201 flourished, racking up 12 hits – eight of which came from Powhatan High School alumni Logan Allen (four), Luke Rodgers (three), and Cody Mann (one). Allen was playing in his first game since last summer and was perhaps Post 201’s most dangerous threat. He showed no signs of rust from his hiatus, going 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and three runs. Rodgers also was a force to be reckoned with, finishing 3-for5 with a triple, two RBI, and three runs. Peyton Mawyer, also of Powhatan, added two RBI. Mawyer was effective on the

enth, but 125 exploded for four runs – three on a Randy Nilsz home run – take a lead it would never relinquish. Post 201 tacked on one run in the top of the eighth to make the score 5-3, but that’s as far as the Powhatan Post’s comeback attempt would progress. It was, by far, Post 201’s weakest offensive showing of the season, considering the team put up 19 runs and 8 runs in the first two games of the summer. Post 201 struck out 12 times on Tuesday and managed only five hits – two statistics that stood in stark contrast to that heightened offensive output of the first two games. Ben Reid was the only 201 player with more than one hit. He was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Luke Rodgers had 201’s other RBI. Post 201’s offensive struggles were due in large part to a strong showing from 125 starter Nick Roth. Roth lasted five full innings, striking out seven and allowing only one earned run. He turned the ball over to reliever Jake Ottinger in
the top of the sixth with the score knotted at one. Ottinger promptly gave up a single to Rodgers that brought home Logan Allen and broke the tie. But Ottinger eventually simmered down, tossing the final four innings and receiving the win. Post 125 would answer back in the seventh, though, with what would be a gamewinning four-run frame. Lost in hubbub of 125’s comeback victory was a fine performance by 201 starter Austin Arnold. Arnold struck out six and allowed only two hits and a run in five innings of work on an extraordinarily muggy summer night. But Arnold’s replacement, Ryan Irby, allowed that untimely Nilsz home run – a moonshot that ultimately erased any dreams 201 may have harbored about working its way through the monthlong summer schedule with an unblemished record. Post 201 hosted games on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, before rounding out the week with a two-day road trip on Saturday and Sunday.

Logan Allen (left, shown against Post 125F) scored a run on a Luke Rodgers single in the top of the sixth that put Post 201 up, 2-1, over Post 125. However, Post 125 answered with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, three on a Randy Nilsz home run, and went on to capture a 5-3 win. The loss dropped 201’s record to 2-1.
