Transfer station gets rave reviews By Roslyn Ryan Editor
GOOCHLAND — Some might have been surprised in April during the monthly Goochland County Board of Supervisors meeting when a resident approached the microphone during the public comment period and proceeded to sing the praises of the county’s Central Convenience Center. In fact, the man told the board, he now loves going to the dump. For his part, convenience center manager Dwayne Jones would not have been surprised to hear this. Thanks largely to a handful of major improvements made to the facility over the past year, Jones has been getting plenty of feedback from residents. “It’s been all positive,” Jones said of the comments. According to Jones, the county first embarked on the improvements just over a year ago, when it became clear that the layout of the facility was no longer able to adequately handle the 17,000 trips on average residents were making each month. In order to improve traffic flow, the single pathway in and out of the center was reconfigured into a separate entrance and exit. While that is the change Jones hears the most about, there were several other see Station > page 2

Making a difference Cafeteria workers send food items to children in Haiti By Roslyn Ryan Editor
GOOCHLAND — Goochland County Public School cafeteria workers are used to feeding hundreds of hungry county children on any given school day. Recently, however, their efforts managed to make a difference for kids living over 1,000 miles away. After hearing from Debbie White, GCPS finance director, about the plight of school children in Bayonnais, Haiti, who would no longer have access to the daily meal typically served to students, the workers took it upon themselves to pitch in. Learning that the meals had been eliminated due to cuts in government subsidies, the cafeteria workers at Goochland Elementary School, Goochland Middle School and Goochland High School collected over $200 and 50 pounds of beans and rice to be sent to Bayonnais. As White pointed out, the Goochland cafeteria workers had been particularly moved by the fact that students living in the remote Haitian town did not have access to the same government-subsidized free and reduced breakfasts and lunches that these professionals serve each day to 27 percent of the county’s students. They soon found out that the food and money collected would be enough see Haiti > page 3

Follow these tips when celebrating with fireworks Contributed Report
As the mercury rises, the parties and festivities that have come to signify summer excite revelers far and wide. Summer has become the season of pool parties, trips to the beach, barbecues, and, of course, fireworks. Love it or hate it, warm weather seems to beckon neighbors out of hibernation and incites a desire to set things on fire. When cooking over an open flame doesn’t satisfy that desire, many take to shooting off bottle rockers and whistlers. But fireworks can still be dangerous, and not everyone is equipped or legally allowed to ignite fireworks. Therefore, to avoid potentially dangerous injuries, fines or arrests, it pays to follow these fireworks dos and don’ts. DO find out if fireworks are legal in your area. If you have to travel over state lines or into another country to purchase fireworks, there is a good chance you are not allowed to use fireworks in your community. There are many regulations regarding the sale, transport and use of fireworks, so be sure you’re not breaking any laws before buying any fireworks. DON’T buy fireworks from just anyone. You want to ensure you are purchasing them from a reputable retailer of legal fireworks. DO check any safety guidelines and warnings on the wrapper of the fireworks before lighting them. DON’T light fireworks near people, trees, homes, or any combustible materials. DO keep a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby in the event of a fire. The National Fire Prevention Association
notes that the Fourth of July features more reported fires than any other day of the year. DON’T forget that sparklers and firecrackers are no safer than other types of fireworks. The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of more than
1200 F, which is hot enough to cause third-degree burns and is hotter than the temperature it takes to melt glass. DO leave fireworks to the professionals to avoid injury or fire. DON’T light more than one firework at a time. DO wait 15 to 20 minutes after lighting a firework to see if it has ignited. If not, dump the firework in a bucket of water and move on to a fresh firework. DON’T let small children handle and light fireworks. DO make every attempt not to store fireworks. If you purchase them, use them all

up. However, a cool, out-ofthe-way place may suffice for a day or so. DON’T have any part of your body over the firework when lighting it. Try to use a lit stick or butane lighter to keep as far away as possible. DO say no to alcoholic beverages when lighting fireworks. Your perception and dexterity can be compromised by alcohol. DON’T shoot fireworks off in windy conditions. Otherwise, make sure the prevailing wind is blowing away from the audience. DO wear eye protection when lighting fireworks. DON’T shoot fireworks off on uneven ground. To ensure stability, always light them on a hard, flat and level surface. DO use common sense at all times when in the presence of fireworks. DON’T assume pets and children will enjoy the loud noises. Make accommodations for a quiet respite. DO make sure spectators keep their distance. They should be 25 to 40 feet away from ground-based items and even farther for aerial products. Fireworks can be beautiful to watch and often signify special moments and celebrations. Safety should always be on the minds of people spending time around fireworks.

The real story as we prepare to celebrate the 4th By Roslyn Ryan Editor
We’ve all had that moment, the one where it suddenly dawns on us that the narratives we learned as children had been somewhat sani-
tized and edited. For me, this was never truer than once I began to learn more about the founding of the United States of America. As is usually the way, each year closer to adulthood brought more detail and nuances to the story. The founding of the United States, as it turns out, wasn’t simply a group of men in knee-britches calmly deciding in unison that it might be a good idea to put their thoughts about independence down on paper and sign it. What’s more, the men who eventually did sign were not all pillars of righteousness and virtue, or men with unimpeachable character. Rather, they were human beings

with the same faults and failings as the rest of us. The biggest difference is that most of us haven’t taken it upon ourselves to found a nation. As the years have gone by, I’ve come to appreciate more and more the historians who delve into the country’s past and continue to bring new life and meaning to the stories of our founding fathers. I enjoy the dismantling of the façade that once covered the nittygritty details of how these United States came to be. Rather than feel as though a pristine creation story has been tarnished, I like knowing that the precious, treasured place on the map that we call home was formed through, at best, a messy, difficult, process — one that remains unfinished even today. It should serve as a reminder, I suppose, that great things often require great struggle and sacrifice, and that few lasting achievements are created without some hardship along the way. As you celebrate the July Fourth holiday this Saturday, I hope you will take as much pleasure as I do in knowing that you live in a country that is still striving, still succeeding and failing, and still evolving into the best possible version of the one our forefathers had in mind 239 years ago. And that’s the real story.

Catching up with . . . GES Teacher of the Year
L
ast May, kindergarten teacher Betsy Alvis was named Goochland Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year for 2015. Alvis, who has over two decades of teaching experience, recently took a few minutes to chat with the Goochland Gazette. What made you decide to become a teacher? I have had some very inspirational teachers in my life. Two of those were my Hermitage high school teachers: Mrs. Pat Martin, my Algebra 1 teacher and Ms. Barbara Haney, my U.S. History teacher. Both of these women were exceptional teachers who made being in their class fun. They also both went beyond teacher expectations to build a relationship of trust and understanding with me that I will forever cherish. Probably the most influential person, however, in my decision to become a teacher was my guidance counselor in high school, Mrs. B.J. Giannini. She told me she thought I would make a good elementary teacher. Since I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life at the time, I took her advice. I think she gave me some pretty good advice. What do you most enjoy about teaching? I really enjoy teaching with the arts: singing, dancing, painting, etc.,
to help students retain information and make learning fun. I also love teaching Children’s Engineering where students design, build and problem solve on their own. I probably get the most enjoyment, however, from looking back at the entire year
BETSY ALVIS and seeing how much each student has learned and accomplished. What do you find most challenging about teaching? Kindergartners enter school with such a wide variety of ability,
experiences and maturity. Meeting the individualized needs of each student academically, socially and emotionally is what I find most challenging. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given about teaching? Always remember you are teaching someone else’s child. Treat him/ her with the same love and care you would your own. What is one other piece of advice you would give young teachers just starting out? Stay positive and don’t be afraid to ask for advice and help. Teaching can be very isolating and frightening the first couple of years, but it doesn’t have to be. We are all in this together! If you were not teaching, what might you be doing? If I were not teaching, I would probably be doing something working with the elderly. I love the very young and the young at heart. I have always thought I would love being a recreation leader at a nursing home. I guess in a way that would still be teaching, just more like switching gears. What is one thing you hope students take away from your class? Self-confidence, self-worth and a love for learning!
Hitting the road promotes learning By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Just when I thought I was ready, sort of, to deal with the fact that none of my three school aged children can read or write in cursive, or script, as we knew it, I’m now lamenting the loss or reduction of another longstanding traditions in some elementary schools. I have two children who recently completed the fifth grade at one of the county’s elementary campuses.
They learned early in the year they would not be taking the, up until now, annual and much anticipated trip to the nation’s capitol. While they did enjoy several trips to local parks and museums, the big trip to Washington eluded them due to budget restraints. I think that’s a shame. Some of my fondest memories of elementary school involve field trips to Washington, Williamsburg and Jamestown. Somewhere buried in some attic is the old horseshoe
I received from the blacksmith in Williamsburg neatly engraved with my name. And walking through the catacombs under the National Cathedral is a memory that still scares me a little. It’s difficult for me to understand how services like field trips, band and chorus in elementary school were affordable when I attended in the 1950s, but are now unavailable to our children. The absence of music see Learning > page 7
Thursday
continued from >6 and chorus, the elimination or reduction of field trips and other cost savings measure may produce short terms results, but rob of our children of price-
less childhood experiences that also form a productive base for future success. Maybe, in this case, we should look at the small things, and understand that bold budget policies have consequences. While the cost of educating our children has constantly
increased, it might be time to examine where those increases actually land. As taxpayers, it’s mandatory that we demand representation that does not shortchange our students. Perhaps, making sure every student travels to Williamsburg in the fourth
grade and Washington in the fifth grade would provide a valuable first step in the process of restoring what our students have lost. Field trips should remain as a vital portion of our children’s curriculum, and I personally hope their threat to survival is only temporary.

Post 201 held a brief 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, after Ryan Irby roped a double that plated two. But 284P unleashed its bats in the top of the second, scoring six runs to establish a lead it would never let go of. Trailing by two in the bottom of the ninth, 201 loaded the bases, creating a prime opportunity to tie or win the game. But they could muster no runs and hence took one on the chin, 7-5.
