Goochland’s Stewart Williamson has been selected to receive a 2015 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The PAEMST program recognizes outstanding teachers for their contributions to the teaching and learning of mathematics and science, and is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Williamson Policy. Williamson, a teacher at Collegiate School, and 107 other science and math teachers from across the United States, will receive a certificate signed by President Obama, a trip to Washington D.C. to participate in a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities, and $10,000. “The award itself is a confirmation of what I believe to be true about teaching – creativity works,” Williamson said. “I certainly could not have even come close to earning this recognition without my colleagues.” Williamson is entering his second year at Collegiate School, where he teaches physics. His assignments for students have ranged from figuring out how to package a potato chip so it could be mailed through the U.S. Postal service and arrive unbroken, to teaching the principals of momentum by having students participate in an outdoor ropes see Teacher > 2

With its gleaming marble floors, gilded columns and sweeping river views, Goochland’s River Run Manor appears to have it all. In fact, there’s only one thing the 40-room Georgian Revival home, which went on the market for $7.9 million last year after the death of owner William B. Massey, seems to lack: a committed buyer. Realtor Richard Bower with Joyner Fine Properties confirmed Monday that he has fielded numerous inquiries about the home — one as recently as last week — but that it has not yet sold. A recent $1.1 million price cut could help move things along, but Bower said Monday that it isn’t unusual for a property of River Run Manor’s scale to remain on the market. “Because there is such a small percentage of the population with the resources to purchase this kind of home, sometimes it takes a while to find the right buyer,” Bower said. As of press time, River Run Manor was the most expensive residential property for sale in the Richmond area. see Massey > 2

Collegiate Head of School Steve Hickman praised Williamson’s commitment to helping students appreciate and value science. “Stew’s teaching represents the very best of what this award celebrates, and we could not be more proud of him,” Hickman said. “His innovative teaching methods reflect an authentic and unwavering commitment to providing a learning environment that ignites a young person’s passion for the study of science.”

Williamson came to Collegiate from Peoples Academy, a public school in Morrisville, Vermont, that nominated him for the award. During his eight-year tenure there, he taught chemistry, physics and forensics and collaborated with colleagues on two expansive initiatives that he credits with helping him achieve the PAEMST recognition. Williamson, a graduate of Middlebury College and Boston University, said he is honored to continue his innovative teaching methods at Collegiate, where students and administrators have embraced his ideas and strategies.

of his summer break getting a first-hand look at all aspects of local government. Snead introduced himself during the afternoon session of last Tuesday’s meeting, saying he has ben enjoying his time working alongside county staff and is interested in learning more about finance and ways to serve his community. Now in its fourth year, the

summer internship program “allows students interested in the field of government, specifically local government, the ability to get a hands-on real-world perspective of all it entails,” County Administrator Rebecca Dickson said. “The County is excited to offer this opportunity to students who are interested in being future leaders in government and their community.”.

with his selflessness, humility, and continued commitment to duty and service.” After enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1962, Wadle served six years before being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. According to the board’s resolution, Wadle served in Vietnam and at Headquarters Marine Corps before leaving active duty service in August 1972. He would go on to serve another 26 years in the Marine Corps Reserve before retiring as a Colonel in June 1998. In his remarks after the

proclamation was read, Wadle expressed the pride he takes in Post 215’s volunteers. Though the post had once faced dwindling membership, Wadle said the 34 new members who have come on board in recent years “had brought the whole unit back to life.” Wadle also shared his belief that the Post’s best years are still to come. “I can promise you that the things we have accomplished are minuscule compared to what is going to be accomplished,” Wadle said. “Good things are ahead.”

Gazette looking forward to celebrating 60 years By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Y

ears ago, while browsing in a local antique shop, I came across an item that had my name all over it ... literally. The item in question was a skirt, one crafted not from fabric but from several issues of the newspaper I was working for at the time. There, along the flounces and seams of the garment, were stories my colleagues and I had written, photos we had taken, and letters readers had submitted for publication. It was certainly unique, and may be the most creative use I ve seen for a sheaf of news pages (how comfortable it was, sadly, I never managed to find out). However, I like to think that it was only one of a dozen ways that paper had served a useful purpose. As we here at the Gazette prepare to celebrate our 60th year, we will be taking a look back at the role the paper has played in our community, from documenting major milestones to highlighting the extraordinary lives of those among us. In the many years since

our first edition came off the press, you’ve read us and written us, praised us and chided us, and graciously welcomed us into your homes. For our part, we’ve strived to offer a place where Goochland could share its news and keep abreast of local issues, from government meetings to little league sports. As is always the case, some stories likely seemed more consequential than others. But all of them have served to chronicle the incredible journey Goochland has been on since 1955. As we mark this special anniversary, we would like to invite all of our wonderful readers to celebrate with us. Do you have clippings of the Gazette stashed away? Let us know. Was there a story we ran that was particularly meaningful to you? We’d like to hear about it. There are few things more rewarding than being part of a community like Goochland, and we’re thrilled to be able to say we’ve been here for six decades. So whether you’ve read us, written for us — or, yes, even worn us — we’re looking forward to hearing from you.

County Fire-Rescue department honored with American Heart Association award Goochland County Fire-Rescue was recently honored with the American Heart Association’s Mission Lifeline Bronze Award for 2015. The award, which Goochland County Fire-EMS chief Bill MacKay attributed to a true “team effort” on the part of all volunteers, honors the departments’ efforts to provide the fastest lifesaving assistance possible for those suffering an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) or cardiac arrest. “What we strive to do is to reduce the amount of time for that person between the time they suffer the cardiac emergency to the point where they get definitive medical care,” MacKay said. According to Mission Lifeline’s John Dugan, who was on hand to honor the department during the July 7 Board of Supervisors meeting, the time saved by volunteers translates into lives saved in the community. For every 10 minutes rescuers save, Dugan said, eight people out of 100 will still be alive one year later. Is local control missing on sludge issue? By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

I’m not sure if it’s the perception or the reality of industrial sludge that scares people the most, but the mere mention of that word, or anything associated with it, evokes a nerve-splitting reaction from citizens. While some counties in Virginia have opted to endorse the controversial policy of using industrial

sludge to fertilize state agricultural fields, others tremble when they hear the word. Experts will tell you that industrial sludge is different from the latest version of the treated sewage, biosolids. Biosolids are treated sewage that has been processed through wastewater facilities and then transformed into fertilizer. Companies that want to apply the material to Virginia farmland

are required to obtain permission from the state’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Once a permit is issued, landowners can apply the treated sewage to fields for 10 years, and the permitting process may be only providing lip service to concerned citizens who don’t want the practice utilized in their communities. They argue the studies are incomplete on long-term effects of see Sludge > page 7

Thursday

July 16, 2015

Sludge continued from >6 applying waste to crops consumed by humans or the obvious environmental concerns. But, it’s the lack of local control that really irks some opponents. Allowing the state to determine who can and how to use biosolids or sludge omits an important and vital element in the biosolids equation: citizens. Once the permitting process begins, concerned citizens can request a hearing when they obtain 25 signatures in opposition to the process. Synagro, a wastewater management company from Baltimore, Maryland, is now seeking permits to spread the mixture on 35 fields in Hanover County totaling

about 750 acres. Most of those fields are already permitted and the process could begin anytime on those sites with the exception of one proposed site that fronts the South Anna River. Local officials have little say in the process and DEQ holds all the cards when it comes to the controversial application methods. While local governments have pushed for more control in recent sessions of the Virginia General Assembly, DEQ’s control of the permitting process seems impenetrable. It seems Hanover, like many other localities, has little to say about how or where industrial biosolids are applied in their county. And that doesn’t sit well

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor with environmentalists. Some say the application will have a long-term trickle down effect that could affect the state’s waterways for years to come. Current inspections have not revealed negative impacts from runoff or bad management, and each site is required to provide a detailed plan for best practices in managing the tracts. When the General Assembly reconvenes next year, biosolids again will occupy center stage in conversations between localities and state agencies. Expecting different results from that process may be a little bit over-optimistic. Selling a House in Manakin-Sabot?

Meanwhile on the mound, Brian Fitch gutted it out, despite perhaps not having his best stuff. He threw five full innings, allowing five runs and striking out five. Thompson threw 98 pitches in only 4 1/3 innings, giving up 14 hits and 12 runs.
