Thanks to the efforts of Goochland resident Sally Graham, who helped create the Goochland Free Clinic in 1998, thousands of area residents have been given access to much-needed healthcare and support. In honor of her efforts, Graham has been nasmed one of the 2015 Allen & Allen Hometown Heroes. The winners “represent the spirit of giving and define what being a community is all about,” Trent Kerns, Graham President of the Allen & Allen law firm, said last week. To Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services Development Director Adair Roper, Graham’s heroism can be found both in the way she treats others and the way she approaches life. “Sally’s vision, passion, and integrity combined with a visionary and entrepreneurial spirit make her a true Goochland County hero,” Roper said. In 2007, Graham merged the Goochland Free Clinic with Goochland Fellowship and Family Services in order to better serve the

Housing news for county is good, but issues loom By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When it comes to housing, according to a recent study, around 73 percent of Goochland residents are able to comfortably manage their costs. And while this number makes the county “far and away” the most fortunate jurisdiction in the region, accord-

ing to Partnership for Housing Affordability Executive Director Laura Lafayette, the county still has some work to do to help the remaining 27 percent. Lafayette, who recently addressed the county Board of Supervisors, explained that the vast majority of Goochland residents do not fall into the category of “cost burdened,” meaning a household that spends 30 percent

A recent benefit held in honor of a county man killed in a motorcycle crash raised nearly $5,000 to help support his two young children. According to Jeff Ottaviano, owner of the 250 Sports Grill on Broad Street in Goochland, the $4,850 dollars in donations was taken to Wells Fargo and deposited in the Sean Harris Memorial Fund. Harris, who lived in Gum Spring, was killed on May 31 when his motorcycle went off the road on Route 637 in Goochland. An employee of the CSX Corporation who had recently been promoted to conductor, Harris left behind two young children. Ottaviano said Harris was a frequent customer at the restaurant, and had become like family over the years. He also said he and his staff plan to continue to help make sure Harris’s family is not forgotten: on every first Friday of the month, they are now donating 50 percent of the restaurant’s profits to the memorial fund. — Roslyn Ryan

Those residents who have passed their peak earning years—those 65 and above— often face critical challenges in terms of housing, Lafayette said, “because at that point [the lack of income] is a permanent situation.” Lafayette said she applauded the county’s recent approval of mixed use zoning and age-restricted (over 55) housing, particularly in light of the

projected increase in the housing needs of senior citizens. According the recent projections, the region will see between 3,200 and 2,200 more seniors in need of housing by 2030, she said, representing a 160 percent increase in housing demand. “Looking at the projected growth of seniors, and looking at how many seniors are struggling, we have a real regional challenge,” Lafayette said. When it comes to developments, “we are going to see more and more demand for this type of product.”

Brewery plans $28 million facility in Goochland Hardywood Park will build new operation in West Creek Office Park By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Cold beer was the topic of the day last Tuesday at the Farm Bureau offices in Goochland’s West Creek office park, but not just because the temperatures were soaring. Joining state and local officials, including Gov. Terry McAuliffe, the founders of Richmond-based Hardywood Park Craft Brewery announced plans for a $28 million expansion into Goochland County. The venture, which will feature a 60,000 square foot brewing facility, a tap room and an amphitheater for hosting events, is expected to bring 56 new jobs to Goochland. “This is the kind of thing we talk about in terms of economic development,” McAuliffe told those in attendance, highlighting the fact that Hardywood

expects to purchase over 300,000 pounds of agricultural products from Virginia farmers over the next five years. To Goochland Board of Supervisors Chair Susan Lascolette the plan seems tailormade for the county. “We believe it fits so nicely into our strategic vision for Goochland,” Lascolette said. “We plan to help this business open as soon as possible.” Also helping Hardywood’s efforts will be a $500,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund, along with a $400,000 performancebased grant from the Virginia Investment Partnership program. The company also will receive a $250,000 grant from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development fund, an incentive program administered by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to support businesses that use Virginia agriculture products. Common sense missing from debate over flag By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Sadly, the ongoing debate over the meaning —and proper place to display — the flag once used by the Confederate army appears to be the gift that keeps on giving. In just a few short weeks, it has provided: A rallying point for certain politicians and talking heads attempting to burnish their “More Liberal Than Thou” image. A welcome boost to the bottom line of numerous retailers selling merchandise emblazoned with the Stars and Bars. Christmas in July for those who enjoy, more than just about anything, to stick a finger in someone else’s eye for sport (I’m talking to you, Idiot Driving Through a Predominantly AfricanAmerican Neighborhood Waving the Confederate Battle Flag — seriously, how did you see that one playing out?) And, finally, a sad reminder that common sense in some areas of this country appears to be suffering a slow and agonizing death. Make no mistake about it: The Confederate flying above

a statehouse anywhere in the United States is wholly out of step with the idea that the government of the United States represents all of us. Simply put, it should not be there. That said, how can anyone who calls him or herself an American suggest that citizens of a free nation do not have a right to personally embrace whatever flag or symbol they choose? To vilify those who choose to honor the Confederate flag — or to ban it outright — is to completely ignore the raison d’être of the American flag. Listening to debates like these rage on, I am reminded of a personal hero, a man who is likely very familiar to those in South Carolina. Reuben Greenberg was hired in 1982 as the first black police chief of Charleston, South Carolina. He was also an Orthodox Jew, and was leading the Charleston Police Department when, one blazing hot summer day in August, the Ku Klux Klan requested a permit to march through the heart of the city. Few could have found more reasons to be offended than Greenberg. And yet he personally escorted the group’s march see Flag > 7

When it comes to country’s racial past, there are no easy answers By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Older Americans are seldom recognized and today’s headlines often reflect a predominantly youthful society. When’s the last time you noted a news story that involved someone over the age of 80? That all changed this week with Nell Harper Lee’s release of a longawaited sequel to legendary masterpiece, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Who knows why Lee never attained or desired to repeat the level of acclaim that accompanied “Mockingbird,” or the generational influence it possessed for millions of Americans. It did not surprise me to learn that Atticus Finch, the central character in Lee’s first novel, is portrayed as a racist in her latest release, “Go Set a Watchman.” Lee, along with noted author Truman Capote, grew up in rural Alabama, and the lasting influence of their childhood clearly influenced their literary pursuits. Each viewed society with a twinge of skepticism and the not-so-apparent legacy of defeat that was still evident in the South mid-20th century. I grew up in Montgomery,

Alabama, in a time of immense change and tension, a time when the legacy so many of us treasured was under attack from all angles. It was a time of true awakening for a region that had long ago lost its swagger and always felt like America’s redheaded stepchild. Finch always reminded me of my father with his quiet dignified presence and economic use of the English language. My father’s softspoken nature could never be confused with weakness or fear, but he did evoke a sense of quiet confidence that provided us as children with an unquestioned sense of security. He also was the product of years of racism and segregation living in a city that made no apology for the way things were. Although I’m sure he, like Finch, held racist views deep in his psyche, views never expressed in my childhood, but evident as I look back on my time with him. Truth be known you’d be hard pressed to find anyone in Montgomery, or anywhere else in the South who wasn’t afflicted with a fair amount of racism, a reflection of the community that reared them and sent them into a world where their views were not always endorsed, but seldom scorned.

So, how could a racist like Atticus Finch defend Tom Robinson in such a clearly heated racially-based trial? I suppose it’s the same innate quality that allowed my father to routinely visit poor black neighborhoods in Montgomery to distribute food. Maybe it was the same amount of integrity that moved him to pull over and help an older gentleman of color change a tire on a country road. I certainly don’t hold it against him. I’m not sure I even legitimize the assumptions that men can be judged by the evil in their hearts while ignoring the good. In reality, all of us are a combination of values, mostly good but always flavored with a hint of bad. All of us have prejudices and preconceived judgments, some of them voluntary and some the result of the people who influenced our lives. Not unlike Capote or Lee, my years in Alabama allowed me to enter a vastly different world and enjoy the diversity of life, unbridled by the chains of prejudice or the limits of pre judged conceptions. My father is largely responsible for my ability to accept, embrace and endorse the joy of what makes people different, or painfully alike.

Letter to the Editor After 60 years in print, Goochland Gazette still key part of community Dear Editor, Congratulations to the Goochland Gazette on it’s 60th anniversary as an outstanding local newspaper that is greatly appreciated by local readers. Local newspapers such as the Goochland Gazette are the heart and soul of a community despite all the newfangled forms of digital media that corrupt our discourse.

Since retiring from the Army I travel a lot and buy a local newspaper every place I stop for a meal. The information and education provided by community newspapers throughout the country is fascinating and our Goochland Gazette is a highly important member of this newspaper institution. xGoochland County is very fortunate to have a local newspaper, especially one that is distributed for free. Many communities have no local newspaper which is a travesty. xA community newspaper such

as the Gazette not only reports interesting local news but also provides significant citizen influence on local government. One published letter to the editor can be far more influential than many votes. I know because more than a hundred of my letters have been published and I frequently meet people who have read and appreciate the letters. And I know our Goochland government leaders read local letters to the editor and take them to heart. Letters to the see Letters > page 7

United States, Goochland County obviously has a lot of highly intelligent citizens. So there is no reason for our community newspaper to go without letters to the editor published in every issue. We have local elections in the near future which are uncontested so far. Is Goochland County free of problems? Do we live in paradise? Do we need some new local leaders? Is our local government spending our tax money wisely? Are taxes

Post 201’s wet, wild season comes to a close Post 201 notches one playoff win before elimination By Mike Schoeffel

Sports Editor

P

ost 201 baseball team’s season came to a close on a brutally hot afternoon at L.C. Bird High School on July 19, in the form of a 13-8 loss to Post 137. Powhatan’s playoff run lasted three games – a loss, a win, and a loss, in that order – stretched over two days. They close the season with an 8-11 record. In the first playoff contest, a Saturday afternoon showdown with second seed Post 284 – Pirates at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, an upset by 201 seemed within reach. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Powhatan trailed only 3-2, thanks to solid day on the mound from Austin Arnold up until that point. But as has been the story all season long, one big inning rang the death knell for Powhatan. The Pirates exploded for six runs in the seventh and never looked back, burying 201 9-3. At the game’s conclusion – around 5 p.m. – the Post 201 motorcade hopped on 95-N and headed back to Richmond for a 7 p.m. elimination game at Douglas Freeman High School against Post 125. Despite falling behind 30, Powhatan stormed back to knock out 125, 11-4. Luke Rodgers went 5-for-5, Robbie Harvey drove in three, and Aaron Kurz allowed only three earned runs over eight

innings. By game’s end, most of 201’s players looked like they had been rolling around in mud. Sam Meads was particular soiled, dirt covering nearly every inch of his uniform. The effort that produced that grunginess was surely worth it, though, because it allowed Powhatan to take the field the next day against Post 137 at L.C. Bird. When game time – 4:30 p.m. – rolled around, the heat index was over 100 degrees. There was virtually no wind, and thunder boomed in the distance for most of the game. The mugginess and potential storms didn’t faze 201, at least initially, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead first inning lead behind a two-run home run by Logan Allen. But again, one big inning made the difference. Southside scored six runs in the sixth, and despite a valiant three-run, two out rally in the ninth, Post 201’s season came to an end. The story of the year, of course, was torrential rain. As the amount of precipitation increased its disruptiveness, the posts on the Post 201 Facebook page became more exasperated. Like this one on July 10: “RAIN OUT AGAIN. What began as a nice shower, wetting down the infield, turned into a frog strangling gully washer about 15 minutes later. We’ll try again tomorrow.” And this one the following day: “It’s only rained twice this summer in Powhatan....June and July.” Then there was a picture, posted on July 7, of two fans sitting on soaked bleachers under an umbrella. “Visual description of our season so far” read the caption. And so it was.

Post 201’s Austin Arnold fires a pitch against Post 284 – Pirates at Shepherd Stadium (Colonial Heights) on July 18. Post 201 lost the game, 9-3, but defeated Post 125 at Douglas Freeman High School later that evening to extend its season to the next day. The season came to a close on July 20, when Post 201 fell to Post 137, 13-8, at L.C. Bird High School. The heat index was well above 100 degrees.
