Supervisors approve new comp plan Planning guide for 2035 described by county as more ‘user-friendly’ By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The Goochland County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the county’s 2035 Comprehensive Land Use Plan during its meeting on Aug. 4, bringing an end to a process that first began last spring. The Comprehensive Plan is essentially a road map for the county’s future growth, according to county officials, and offers a framework to help guide development. While supervisors and county planning staff “did not feel as though there were any major problems” in the previous plan, said Senior Planner Jo Ann Hunter, who presented the final plan to the board for approval, the new plan does boast several improvements. According to Hunter, the new plan is more “user-friendly” than previous versions, and several ineffective maps have been taken out. More pictures offer a better reading experience for residents, Hunter said, and a number of steps were taken to ensure that information was easier to find than it see Plan > page 3

Group’s grants support projects that help restore Chesapeake Bay Applications will be accepted until Oct. 1; $357,223 available Contributed report

The Chesapeake Bay Restoration Advisory Committee is accepting grant applications to conduct Chesapeake Bay-related education and restoration activities. The grants are funded by the sale of the special Chesapeake Bay license plate “Friend of the Chesapeake.” This year, $357,223 in grant money will be awarded to eligible applicants. During this past year, 52 grantees received $264,462 in grant funds. Since 1996, over $7 million has been awarded as a result of the sale of the “Bay plate.” The deadline for submitting a proposal for 2016 support grants is Oct. 1, 2015. Grant funds will be awarded in May-June 2016. To be eligible for receiving a grant, applicants should submit proposals emphasizing environmental education or restoration and conservation of the Chesapeake Bay. Projects focusing on environmental education should increase public awareness and knowledge about the Bay, and projects of a restoration and conservation nature should be action oriented. Grants are awarded for one year, except in special circumstances. Grant funds may not be used to supplant existing state or local general fund appropriations. Applications will be accepted from private not-forprofit conservation organizations, schools and universities, and governmental agencies whose projects will affect water bodies that are located within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. There is no limit on the amount that an applicant may request. More information on the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund, including the application, W-9 and EDI forms (both new), grant guidelines and a catalogue of past projects can be found at http://dls.virginia.gov/commissions/cbr.htm. Thanking readers for 60 great years By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A

s many of our readers may know, 2015 marks the Goochland Gazette’s 60th year as this community’s hometown newspaper. Broken down into ink and paper, that’s 3,120 editions, tens of thousands of headlines, and countless facts and figures. It’s a trail of words that would surely stretch to the moon and back, and enough weddings, births and obituaries to fill 1,000

No matter the subject, if it meant something to Goochland over the past six decades, it meant something to us. family Bibles. For the past 60 years, the Gazette has been coming into homes, standing on the sidelines of little league games, showing up at church suppers, and gleefully getting into Goochland’s business. No matter the subject, if it meant something to Goochland residents over the past six decades,

it meant something to us. We have a creation story that reads like fiction — our founder was a British war hero turned small town raconteur, and one of our first employees rode to work on a horse — and a community of readers that has grown up on (and often in) our paper. And we think that’s pretty special. We hope our readers will enjoy this week’s special anniversary section, featuring a nod to our founding father — Maj. W.M.F Bayliss — as well as to the many editors, staff writers and contributors who have helped carry forth his vision over the years. Of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t reserve the lion’s share of our gratitude for our local Goochland readers, the ones who have read us, confided in us — occasionally chided us — and welcomed us into their homes for the past six decades. As we endeavor to preserve Maj. Bayliss’ vision for what a hometown paper should be — in the know but not nosy, serious but not stodgy, honest but never mean-spirited — we would like to express our appreciation to you. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your support, and we look forward to many more editions to come.

Local newspapers in the digital age By Ken Peterson Contributing Columnist

C

ongratulations to the Goochland Gazette on the celebration of its 60th anniversary. During the past 60 years, dramatic changes have taken place in the competitive landscape for the news industry. The digital age has ushered in a new era of information gathering, analysis and dissemination. Meta data collection and exploitation has been embraced by marketing firms, social media has exploded as a means of staying connected, and personal web pages allow a great number of people to share intimate details about their daily lives with anyone who shows interest. Words like posting, blogging, tweeting and

google-ing have worked their way into our modern day lexicon with both noun and verb variations. So the question becomes, is there still room for a strong local newspaper in today’s communication ecosphere? Local newspapers, whether distributed digitally or in print, may have supporters and detractors. However, it is important to realize the transformation to the digital age is not complete. There are areas with little or no access to the Internet, including parts of Goochland County. As long as there are rural areas not cost-effectively served by broadband providers, there is likely to be demand for traditional information sources. We have all heard about the anticipated demise of shopping malls, printed catalogues, check

writing, paper in general, land line phones and local newspapers. So far they have all experienced disruptive change, but still enjoy some level of residual demand for specific applications, and have found ways to share the competitive landscape. There are clearly generational differences when it comes to life style and the use of technology. So the transition is likely to continue with the passage of time. The timing and magnitude of the transition continues to be the subject to frequent speculation. In today’s hyper-connected world, information overload can be an issue. Local newspapers traditionally have sought to identify information relevant to a particular community, and filter out the nonsense, false and missee Peterson > page 7

Ask the Master Gardener

Dialogue group Don’t fear Creeper, but be cautious begins Goochland conversation on race and prejudice By Virginia McCown, Goochland Powhatan Master Gardener

Q

I understand Virginia Creeper has beautiful autumn foliage and would like to encourage this native vine to grow on the fence between my neighbor’s property and my own. What do you suggest?

A

First off, do you really like this neighbor? There’s a reason I joke with you: read on.

Parthenocissus quinquefolia, known as Virginia creeper, Victoria creeper, fiveleaved ivy, or five-finger, is native to eastern and central North America. You’ll recognize this vine as it loves to engulf telephone poles, trees, pergolas and even sheds. Because it’s a native plant, Virginia creeper cannot be labeled invasive in the eastern half of the U.S. Like Campsis radicans or trumpet vine, another native plant, Virginia Creeper can be very aggressive. So plant it with careful consideration. On the bright side, there are many

homeowners who want a vigorous climber to cover their fences or walls. Virginia Creeper can be beautiful in autumn and its berries are a source of food for wild birds (although the berries can be poisonous if eaten by humans). The sap of the plant contains oxalate crystals which can cause a skin rash in sensitive individuals. For more information about growing native landscaping plants, call the Goochland Extension office at (804) 5565841 or the Powhatan Extension office at (804) 598-5640.

Peterson continued from >6 leading information that can be found on the Internet today. Many news items may be of particular interest to Goochland residents, such as public service announcements, local business advertisements, editorials, obituaries, crime reports, etc. Local interest stories, such as the winning pitcher in last night’s

Layou will work with faculty at Reynolds and other geoscience faculty in the southeast region to support student success and transfer, improve active teaching techniques, and enhance student pathways into geoscience careers. In addition to the faculty at Reynolds, the project will support teams of community college faculty in nine other regions of the US. The project will advance knowllittle league game, or the starting quarterback in next week’s high school football game may not get picked up by regional or national publications, but would have interest to friends and neighbors. Reading about it in the local paper often delights those covered in the article and can foster a sense of community. This would hold true regardless of whether the news is distributed in print or digital format.

edge and understanding of effective professional development for faculty that promotes a cycle of innovation, where faculty learn from the research base and the work of others, make changes in their own practice, and share their results. Nationwide, the project will impact more than 250,000 students, helping to meet the nation’s demands for a well-trained geoscience and STEM workforce as well as supporting the scientific literacy needs of our country. As with most things, the future of local newspapers will be a function of their ability to adapt to competitive pressures in a changing environment, stay relevant and provide an attractive value proposition. At this point, we are living in an “all of the above” communication world, and copies of the Gazette still rapidly disappear from their drop-off locations. What the future holds is

“This program is a fantastic opportunity that will benefit faculty and students, both at Reynolds and the greater VCCS system,” Layou said. “Actively engaging students in geoscience courses is essential to fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of our planet. By collaborating with colleagues at both two and four year institutions, geoscience faculty throughout the region will keep course content and teaching methods fresh, relevant, and researchbased.” anybody’s guess. What we do know is that the Gazette has been a valued member of the Goochland community for the past 60 years, and congratulations are in order as it passes this significant milestone and looks to secure its future in a rapidly changing world. Goochland resident Ken Peterson is the Supervisor for District 5.

Richmond Action Dialogues will present a Community Conversation on Race and Prejudice from 7 to 9 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Goochland Company 5 Fire Station, 2710 Fairground Road. The 30-minute documentary, “A Class Divided,” will be shown and will be followed by small discussions. This is a free public event. The film tells the story of an Iowa elementary teacher’s decision to teach a daring “blue eyes/brown eyes” lesson on discrimination to her class of third graders in April 1968 following the slaying of Martin Luther King Jr. It shows the impact of this lesson on them as adults 14 years later. Come and experience a civil dialogue about a reawakened national topic. For more information, contact sirisoul@aol.com. The film is available at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/ shows/divided/etc/view.html Richmond Action Dialogues is a volunteer group from the Greater Richmond area that values dialogue as one of the paths to a more just, inclusive, peaceful, compassionate and sustainable world. The dialogue group was founded by Goochland resident Jacquelyn Pogue, and includes several facilitators from Goochland who believe in the exponential power of effective action coming from reflection and collective wisdom expressed in group dialogue.

The Goochland High School Bulldogs 2015-2016 edition prepare to go to work earlier this week at the GHS campus. “We’re not big , but we’re fast,” said Head Coach Joe Fowler.

BULLDOGS W BACK IN

By Jim Ridolphi for The Goochland Gazette

ith the start of football season less than a month away, the talk around Goochland this time of year usually revolves around offense.

ACTION Experienced defense, aerial offense could provide fireworks

But, this season, it’s the defense that is getting the preseason hype as Coach Joe Fowler preps his squad for another campaign. “We’ve played a bunch of younger guys on defense the past two seasons, and now those kids are upper classmen and ready to step up,” Fowler said. “That experience and prior playing time should benefit us this season on defense,” he added. Defensive coordinator Dan Summitt also likes what he sees as the Bulldogs began their second full week of practice. “We should be tough on defense. We’re not big but we are fast,” Summitt said. “We have seven solid returning starters led by Akia Timberlake, Cordell Mattox, Calvin Martin and Marcus Burton.” Fowler said the defense has matured, and players who were forced to play last year are ready to play this season. see Bulldogs > page 9

Goochland coach Joe Fowler readies his younger players as the team began its second week of practice. “There were times last year when we had three freshmen and three sophomores on the field. We feel like we paid our dues, and those guys are sophomores and juniors and going to make some big plays for us,” Fowler said. Photo by Jim Ridolphi

Bulldogs continued from >8 “There were times last year when we had three freshmen and three sophomores on the field. We feel like we paid our dues, and those guys are sophomores and juniors and going to make some big plays for us,” Fowler said. While the defense features experience and speed, the offense will focus on continued consistency and a progressing passing game. Quarterback Reid Chenault returns for his fourth year, and it’s no secret the senior is looking to end his Bulldog career with a bang. “There’s nothing I would like more than to go out of here as winners, and I plan on doing everything in my power to make that happen,” Chenault said.

The team sported an undefeated record during 7-on-7 games this summer, and Fowler said Chenault’s arm is tuned and ready. “Whenever Reid’s in there, we feel like we have a chance to win,” he said. “He and our receivers had an incredible summer, and we really looked good throwing the ball,” Fowler said. Chenault will depend on wide outs Mattox and newcomer Scott Carter. Three-year starter John Creasey and James Lowry will anchor the offensive line with returning players Ethan Kopcynski and Josh Clarke. As usual, the Bulldog roster features a bevy of running backs, but Calvin Martin and Deric Clarke are for certain as starting running backs, but others will get time. The all-important fullback duty falls to Marcus Burton and Wyatt

Smith. John King and Cole Nuckols also will get playing time in the Bulldog backfield. “I feel like — between those kids — we’ve got someone who can take it to the house on any given play,” the coach said. With an experienced defense and a potentially high-powered passing game on offense, Fowler is looking for promising signs when his team travels to Tappahannock to face Essex in the opener. After three years together, Chenault and Fowler are ready to release the hounds through the air, and both are expecting winning results. “This is a year when we are going to put the ball in the air more than ever,” Fowler said. “Reid already owns most of the school’s passing records. By the time he gets out of here, he’ll own them all.”

It’s only the second week of practice, but Akia Timerlake (40) is in midseason form and, according to his teammates, “ready to hit somebody.” He will anchor a defense that returns seven starters.

The Major’s mark For Gazette’s founder, bringing community together was the goal By Roslyn Ryan Editor

F

or a man who fashioned a second career out of printing a community’s facts, Goochland Gazette founder Maj. William Murray Forbes Bayliss’ own life story could sound at times like pure fiction.

Jim, Rachel & Rob Parker 784-3333 Offering Goochland County Properties of Quality & Distinction

By his mid twenties he had already fought valiantly for his native England in the trenches during WWI, served as a gunner and navigator on nighttime bombing runs, and spent several dreadful months in a German POW camp. He would go on, after the war, to serve in the northwest frontier of British India, then in Egypt — where he was the personal bodyguard of British High Commissioner Lord Allenby — and eventually, during WWII, in Jamaica, where he was captain of the Army polo team and editor of the service newspaper, the North Caribbean Star. Those who knew Bayliss describe him as a charmer and talented spinner of tales, a charismatic bon vivant who saw the world’s most exotic locales before falling in love with the Virginia countryside. He liked a good drink, loved a good story, and decided one day in the early 1950s, once he’d returned to the Goochland home he’d built for fox hunting years before, that the only thing missing from this small slice of paradise was a paper to publish its news. And so he started one. Following in the footsteps of many community weeklies, Bayliss’ one-man newsroom became a clearing house for everything from church notices to farming advice. If you needed to know how to make a fashionable flour-sack dress, you read the Gazette. If you needed to know where to purchase your hay, hire your farm hand or sell your bull, it was all right there, as were detailed accounts of how Goochlanders spent their leisure time. Bayliss’ Gazette was Facebook before Facebook was Facebook, and offered — thanks in large part to a small cadre of dedicated contributing news gatherers — a detailed look at the daily goings on from Manakin to Haydensville. Thanks to Bayliss’ efforts, the Library of Virginia has among its records an account of a watermelon feast, given in the summer of 1956 by Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Ware for Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Bowles, Miss Grace Hanna, Mr. Knight Bowles, Mrs. Meta Myers, and Mrs. Marshall Flint and daughter, Karon, of Salem, Va. (The Library of Virginia also houses in its collection the personal papers of Gov. Patrick Henry — we’ll leave it to you, dear reader, to guess which was read with greater interest by Goochland residents.) see Bayliss > page 3

The Gazette’s first editorial

Our Aims By Maj. W. F. M. Bayliss Editor

This paper aims to give certain services to citizens of Goochland County which our excellent contemporaries, the Richmond papers and those in Hanover and Louisa, cannot be expected to provide. To put first things first, we shall publish a weekly list of church services in the county, a matter of special importance in an area where pastors guide the worship of more than one church on alternating Sundays. We shall gladly give space to the activities of all those organizations which do so much for the county. There are not a few of these. In addition to church organizations, our American Legion, Red Cross, Chapter of the

National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, Family Service Society, Home Demonstration and Improvement Clubs, Garden Club, Ruritan Club, Volunteer Fire Department and County Recreation Council will all be able to let us know of their doings, for the benefit of our readers. In the agricultural field, the Farm Bureau, the 4-H Cub, the Young Farmers, the Older Youth Farmers, and the Grange will be able to keep us in touch with their very able work, and bring to our notice the names of those members who have distinguished themselves. As regards to advertising, the life blood of any paper, we shall be able to put and keep our Goochland farmers and merchants in touch with buyers in the county. It is clearly better, for example, to sell a bull without the cost of transporting it to Richmond or further. Our classified advertisements, dealing largely with Goochland business and people, will, also, fill

of headaches all its own. “Often it drove him nuts,” laughs Temple Bayliss, one of Maj. Bayliss’ three sons, recalling his father’s tenure. Bayliss remembers his father’s occasional worry that he might have danced too close to the editorial edge when it came to topics — like drinking — that some readers might

a long-felt need. Again, and most important, we all need and want to know about each other’s personal doings. Everybody is important to everybody else in Goochland and our large staff of local correspondents will give us a complete listing weekly. The editor will bring to your notice county questions affecting our welfare and will welcome your comments on them, which will be published over your name, if you so wish, in the Voice of the People column. Finally, this paper will be neutral in politics. Indeed, the editor has no vote in the United States, and frequently gives a bitter cry of “no taxation without representation,” of which neither the Director of Internal Revenue nor the County Treasurer take the least notice. However, paid political advertisements of any party will be accepted. — July 15, 1955

have found a bit too delicate for a community newspaper’s pages. He also recalls his father facing the same issues any small business owner must confront: paying the bills, producing the product, and bringing in enough business to keep the whole operation in the black. Still, Bayliss says, his father took

a tremendous pride in the Gazette and its connection to the community. “If I had to say, I would guess he probably would have compared it to riding around northern India on the back of a horse,” Bayliss said. “It had its ups and downs, but on the whole it was rather a kick.”

Praise for paper’s six decades of service Congratulations to the Goochland Gazette and staff for 60 years of coverage of the Goochland community, a milestone worthy of celebration. Strong community newspapers, such as the Gazette, play a vital role of both informing citizens and encouraging commu n i t y involvement. The Gazette is always there to help provide updates on the latest government meetings as well as to celebrate community and local citizen endeavors ranging from Relay for Life, outstanding professional accomplishments, and the success of area students both in the classroom and on the field. Congratulations on 60 years of coverage and here’s to many years to come. Rebecca Dickson Goochland County Administrator

On the job: Former Gazette staff members look back Ken Odor, Goochland Gazette editor, 2011-2013

I

t’s been more than two years since I left the Goochland Gazette editor’s job and so when current editor Roslyn Ryan asked me to reflect on the most memorable stories I covered in my short tenure there, I had to think for a while. But not for long! Right away I remembered the excitement that accompanied the November 2011 county elections and the changes that balloting set in motion. After the votes were counted that fall, four new supervisors and five new school board members had been elected. It was a watershed event in the history of

the county and I was glad to be on hand to report it. It was certainly the most important story I covered as editor of the Gazette. Some other memorable stories for me were the trial of former Goochland Treasurer Brenda Grubbs’ trial on embezzlement charges after her arrest in February of 2011 and Benedictine’s move to Goochland. The packed

house public hearings on Benedictine’s plans that sometimes lasted late into the night are something I won’t soon forget. And the sad drama of Mrs. Grubb’s trial and sentencing will stay with me as well. After those big three stories it’s hard to decide how to rank the news stories I covered. There were plenty of interesting ones. Changes in the schools after School Superintendent Linda Underwood resigned and the School Board hired James Lane to replace her generated a lot of stories. And I well remember covering Kwamane Davis’s trial in 2011, which resulted in a manslaughter conviction pled

down from a second degree murder charge for a 2010 slaying that was often referred to as the “baby shower shooting.” But besides all the “big” stories I covered, the ones I probably enjoyed the most were the features about the people of the county, you know, the good news stories that only a local newspaper takes the time to do. Thinking back makes me realize I miss the county and the friends I made. I don’t get out there much anymore, except for taking part in the Man to Man mentoring program that I hope to continue to be a part of when school starts this fall. If you’d like to drop me a line my email is kodor@juno. com. I’d love to hear from you. ***

Jim Ridolphi, Goochland Gazette Editor, 1998-2002

I

’m a small part of a group of journalists who have been lucky enough to serve as editor of The Goochland Gazette. And it’s a given that many of the names on that long list have accomplishments much greater than mine. I consider it good company. Growing up in Richmond, I didn’t know much about Goochland County when I arrived in late 1990s. I quickly learned why residents seemed a little bit secretive about a slice of heaven that was uniquely theirs. Working in Goochland County for almost two decades, it’s always a pleasure to cross the county line, breath in a good whiff of good, clean air and enjoy the most beautiful see Job > page 4

A one-woman show

I

t was the early 1970’s and my wife applied for a job with the Gazette. She was hired as the Editor/Newspaper. Shortly thereafter, the Gazette and all of its equipment were moved into a spare bedroom in our home in Oilville. By all of its equipment, I mean typewriters, cutters, waxing machines, paste-up boards and more. Community writers and contributors would bring their weekly articles of local events to our home and she would type them, edit them, cut and wax all of the articles, pictures, headlines, ads and fillers then paste up each page and prepare it for print. She would prepare four-, six- and eight-page editions. After that she would take the paper to Orange to be printed and then drop off copies for sale at various locations on her return trip. While no newspaper is ever a one-person event, during her few years it remained a one office person paper. With the arrival of our first daughter and the Gazette office moving to Crozier, my wife gave up a job that she loved for one that she loved more. ightly prepared, a weekly newspaper serves as both chronicle and bulletin board for its community. It is a reflection, a mirror, of the common life of its citizens. It rehearses the public meetings, school life, clubs and civic organizations, sporting and social life of its unique place. It is a digest of notable local events as they occur. Its pages are filled with the variety and profusion of experiences and interests of the people and groups which compose it. Feature stories illustrate the variety. In the pages of a weekly newspaper, a community expresses itself individually and corporately. Newspapers face numerous challenges today – so it is no small achievement to endure, and to serve a locality. On a personal note, as editor of the Powhatan edition of The Gazette many years ago, I wrote reports and editorials and went through print-production in the old Gazette offices in Manakin-Sabot. I salute The Goochland Gazette for its longevity, and more, for its service to the length and breadth of Goochland. R. Lee Ware Delegate, 65th District

f Rachel Parker’s mind was occasionally elsewhere during her tenure as one of the Goochland Gazette’s first paid employees, she could probably have been forgiven—after all, she was still in high school. Just 15 and a sophomore at Goochland High School when she was hired by Maj. W. M. F. Bayliss as the Gazette’s typist, Parker recalls finding the work fascinating. There were challenges, of course, chief among them the job of deciphering the Major’s somewhat cryptic handwriting. If there was an occasional culture hurdle to be dealt with — Parker recalls some confusion about an early column in which the British born Bayliss went on at length about “Indians, without specifying whether he meant natives of India or Native Americans (he meant the

Job continued from >4 sunsets in Virginia. While the surroundings were soothing and refreshing, it was the people who made my stay in Goochland one of my fondest memories. Admitedly, there were ups and downs as ownership changed and journalism entered a new age of technology. I had my share of strike outs, but also enjoyed carrying on a tradition that has served Goochland well for six decades. Teaming with Kevin Myers and the Goochland Department of Recreation and Parks, the Gazette co sponsored the county’s first Fourth of July celebration held at Hidden Rock Park. The event has grown in to a Central Vriginia attraction and is now a must see for neighboring county residents. Over the years, the list of people who have made The Goochland Gazette a valued tradition is long and distinguished. My success clearly hinged on the efforts of the great people who surround-

former) — she has nothing but kind things to say about her former boss. “I just remember he was a very nice man, and very friendly to everybody, Parker said. Parker would go on to a successful career in Real Estate, and says she never really considered going into the news business. While the memories from her time at the Gazette are cherished, Parker says, the compensation may have been somewhat underwhelming. “To this day, she laughs, “I have no idea how much I got paid.

ed me — folks like Doris Brooking, Debbie Beck, Joey Matthews, Ann James and countless others. The list of folks outside the office who made the experience memorable is too lengthy to begin to recall. Some have left us too soon, and others continue to make Goochland the gem that it is. The people, the surroundings and the general atmosphere in Goochland all contributed to my cherished memories of my time at The Gazette, but it’s the stories that stick in my mind. I recall hearing the story of Dr. Bowles and how he rode with a country doctor as a child, inspiring him to enter medical school and spend a lifetime healing Goochlanders. I think of hot Saturday afternoons in western Goochland County as dedicated Habitat for Humanity volunteers finished a house for a low income family, performing the work with a smile. I think of the good work of folks at the Goochland Rotary and their numerous good deeds I witnessed during my tenure in the county.

Sitting on a porch and listening to Kathleen Cabell fill me in on the real story of Dahlgren’s Raid and Goochland’s integral role in the tale still seems fresh in my mind. In later years, relationships formed in my years at The Gazette have joined me in a personal battle regarding my son , Jack, and his struggle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The Goochland community has been a sincere, energetic, reliable and much appreciated source of support, compassion and love for Jack. I unapologically tell you it brings tears to my eyes when I think of the kindness extended to my son by my numerous friends in the county‌ and they know who they are. And I could go on and on about The Goochland Gazette and the county is serves, but I’ll leave space fo others to tell you the good news about their stint as editor. As for the little paper that could, the future is even more exciting as the publication continues to deliver the news you need and tells the story of some of the most special folks in Virginia.

ecause Goochland County is a vibrant, diverse community, it is a great place to call home. For 60 years the Goochland Gazette has chronicled local government, schools, opinions, business news, community notices, volunteer activities, adoption animals, weddings, and milestones of all types – all threads of the fiber of our local community. All of these pieces woven together tell the story of who we are. For six consecutive years, Goochland County voters

have turned out to vote in greater percentages than any other locality in Virginia. I believe that the Goochland Gazette contributed to that achievement by giving citizens and candidates a venue to voice their opinions. This encouraged voters to become active in the election process. Goochland County has become prosperous with a stable, balanced budget. The Goochland Gazette followed every step in the process – from an unacceptable audit four years ago to the AAA rating last year.

The Goochland Gazette frequently spotlights volunteers, good deeds, and citizen achievements. In a world filled with bad news, it is heartwarming to see these stories. We are fortunate to have a local newspaper as good as the Goochland Gazette. A vibrant local newspaper matters. It is our history that we are making every day and they are there to make sure it gets recorded. Happy 60th birthday! Susan Lascolette District 1 Supervisor

Lost and found: Readers help uncover details behind three Gazette photos ooking back on the night she competed in the 1963 Tri-County Fair’s annual Beauty Pageant, Anne Gunther remembers two things. The first is that she didn’t win. The second is that she had a ball anyway. “Ausma ended up winning, and that was such a neat thing, Gunther said of her friend, Ausma Vickmanis, pictured in the middle between Gunther, left, and Marie Payne. “I was so happy for Ausma and I just remember it was such a fun night. Already a veteran pageant contestant by the time she was crowned runner-up that year, Gunther— then Anne Royster— admits she never really enjoyed competing in beauty contests. Still, she remembers those days as some of the best of her life. “It was just a simple time, and a fun time, she recalls. “I was really happy and just excited to be there. Gunther, who was 15 when this picture appeared in the Gazette, would go on to Lynchburg College two years later. She eventually moved to Hampton, married, and spent her career with the Hampton Police Division, serving for many years as a Crime Analyst. These days she and her husband are both retired, and Gunther said she doesn’t have many mementoes from her pageant days. She does, however, still have a copy of this photo. “Oh yes, she says. “I’ve kept that.

A quick Google search (why didn’t we think of that?) confirmed Bayliss’ timely tip: According to multiple sources, Rouse was a noted and widely respected author and historian, a former Sunday editor at the Richmond Times Dispatch, and a champion of uncovering and preserving Virginia’s historic past. In 1998, ayear after his death, the Virginia General Assembly passed a Resolution commending his contributions to the Commonwealth.

Local readers offer thoughts on newspaper’s 60th anniversary

I

don’t recall exactly when I first read the Goochland Gazette. It was sometime in the late 90s, when I was living in southern California and sometimes visited a friend in the east end of Goochland County. Living in a place where most violent crimes didn’t even make the news, I admit to finding great amusement in the Gazette’s accounts of gas tank siphoning or bad check writing. I loved reading the stories about every day life in the

county and imaging what it would be like to live here. And, wow… was I ever amazed at the real estate prices! I believe it was really a yearning to return to a more meaningful way of life that drew me to the Goochland County that the Gazette reflected. While I was charmed with the city of Richmond, Goochland County seemed quite different, a place much like my hometown near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a place where life centers around family, school, church, and work. Later visits to my friend usually found me driving west into “the country” rather than east into “the city”. As

I kept looking at the real estate prices, a vision of my future life here began taking shape. Finally, I decided that I had enough of southern California with its heat, earthquakes, traffic jams, crime, pollution, wild fires and self-absorbed people. I came back to visit for Christmas in 2000 and by New Year’s Day had found a house on a gorgeous piece of land. My friends all thought I had lost my mind. (You’re moving WHERE? What kind of a name is that?) Being single, the move was pretty monumental, with three horses, two cats and a dog and took about six months to accomplish, but I never had

a second thought. I just knew I was right where I was supposed to be. Goochland County was everything I expected- clean air, blue skies, peace and quiet. But there was so much more that I did not expect. It’s a place where a local politician might actually show up at your door and ask for your vote. A place where the guy at the pump next to you might offer to put some gas in your car if you discover you left your wallet at home. A place where total strangers wave and smile at each see Messages > page 9

Gazette marks an important milestone for our community. I know newspapers have been disappearing all over the world, but something about seeing those I know and reading about important events in our community in print is more enduring than a Facebook post or digital link. I have cut

many articles out and saved them over the years, for they meant something special to me. Hopefully one day my heirs will pull out those articles and be able to feel a little bit of the sense of community I have felt when I read those same articles from years past. Please continue to share our

community news and events through the Goochland Gazette. And congratulations on your 60th anniversary! Lisa Dearden Goochland see Mailbag > page 10

ongratulations to the Goochland Gazette on its 60th Anniversary Celebration. Along with congratulations goes a big thank you for 60 years of providing our citizens with valuable information. While today we have more ways to receive information than 60 years ago, there are still many in our community who do not have access to newer technologies. The Gazette plays an important role in making sure our citizens stay informed. When the County was struggling with government improprieties a few years ago, the Gazette was instrumental in shining a light on the issues. The Gazette s reporting along with the letters to the editor made citizens pay attention to local issues and prompted many to step up and take action. This is a very important role for our local paper. In addition, the Gazette provides us with important infor-

ways. Many of us turn on our devices to check Facebook, Twitter, local bloggers ect. to see what is going on in our neighborhoods. But there is something special about holding “the paper” while having your coffee or waiting for your meal in a local restaurant. Something unique about the smell and feel of a real paper and ink. You might be catching up on what happened last week and a noting what events are coming up in the next. Even the ads offer a view into our local business, seeing who has services or products we need near where we live or work. Local papers are a rare find. politan newspapers no longer assign reporters to cover local news or feature stories here. The Gazette fills that void. Of course, assorted websites, Facebook pages, tweets and other social media distribute news and information at a lightning pace, often in real time. But how much of that information is correct? Who validates, confirms or vets the information posted onto the internet? Unfiltered commentaries and reporting via these mechanisms are often interesting and sometimes helpful, but are they truthful? Can anyone trust them? A responsible newspaper, (and we certainly have one here thanks to the work of Ms. Ryan) carefully examines information to ensure accuracy; it follows up on and verifies tips; and it publishes facts, not speculative or titillating theories and rumors. The Gazette, as a community newspaper, is also a forum for civic groups, local government, schools, advertisers, letter writers, and neighborhood organizations. And thankfully, though it is available on the web, it is still printed to satisfy those of us who enjoy rattling newsprint. logical, most of us don’t bet on hope. Yet we find ourselves relentlessly rooting for the David in every David and Goliath tale. Like David, the hometown newspaper has to be creative and innovative to win, but most importantly, it also must be fearless. The owners and writers of a small newspaper don’t just work for a business. Their work is a calling. The nagging question is whether a local newspaper be supported when the news is out there free on the Internet instantly updated, tweeted and tagged? Yes, it should. There is never an easy, one-size-fits all answer when it comes to the news. The job of being the owner or editor of a small paper is complicated. It isn’t an easy job and more often than naught, it’s thankless. There are no ticker tape parades and there are no fetes in the local newspaper’s honor. be the thriving heart and soul of its community. The local issues such as gas pipe lines and out-of-state sewage sludge effect the citizens in the most personal ways possible: their property values, their backyards, their very health. The big newspapers have too much news to sift through and report. They literally just can’t make the time for us. We still have the power to make positive change in rural America without losing the quality of small-town life. The way we get our news has evolved, yet all news still begins with a local issue, a local newspaper, and most importantly, local readers. Mahatma Gandhi understood this when he published Indian Opinion less than 100 years ago. His small, local newspaper changed the course of world history. So yes, Goochland Gazette readers, this small newspaper still has the potential to wield incredible power in its 60th year and hopefully for many more years. The Community Calendar is key for the Library to get the word out to Goochland citizens about its programs and services. Also, over the years the Goochland Gazette has covered important events and issues at the Library, so that citizens know when the Library is offering a new service or adding space or hosting a Dr. Seuss Birthday Party! As a citizen who was born and raised here in the great county of Goochland, the Goochland Gazette has always been a part of the Goochland experience. It seems as though everyone you know is in the paper at some time or another! My children both made the paper on several occasions, and if I go way back, our wedding announcement is in the archives, as well as items about my husband’s high school baseball career at GHS. There is something special about that. Today, it is great to be able to pick up a Goochland Gazette and get an overview of what is happening in the community; I can find out what events in the County I might want to attend, who is being recognized, who won the game last night, what my neighbor is sharing an opinion about and much more. oochland Gazette, you have been a part of serving our county for sixty years! Wow! Sixty years ago, I was twelve years old. Twelve! The only news that came into my house was the daily newspaper and the six o’clock news on the radio. Nothing was so important that it could not wait for a few hours. No computers, iPads, or smart phones to bring information into our lives with such speed and volume that we can hardly scroll through it all to find whatever it was we wanted or needed. Oddly, information is obtained so much faster, yet it seems to take up more of our day, our personal time. Information overload. Here, in Goochland, we use the GG as a touchstone of sorts, highlighting events in our county, our schools, and our shops and stores, to share with our families, friends and neighbors. Sometimes, I do not want to look at the entire world online,

or the nation, or the state. I want a feel for where we live, raise our children, shop, work, play and come together as a community supporting one another first. Then, of course, there is the personal connection, or feel of just physically holding the paper, reading through it at your leisure, unconcerned about power outages or satellite providers. The GG remains important to our community. It represents something real, something tangible. So, take your time. Sit down. Grab a cup of coffee, put your feet up, and slow down. Relax. The GG is free to everyone. Now, Goochland Gazette, page 1 . . . Let’s see what’s going on in our neighborhood this week? Ronald Spessard Goochland

hen you live in a rural area, a feeling and sense of community is very important. The Goochland Gazette provides that vital community connection. Regardless of how many news channels you get on your television, none of them will inform you of the local political issues in your district that affect your neighborhood and your family. And, if you need a service or a repairman who lives and works close by, you will likely find them in your local community paper. Your child’s sports team may not make the Richmond news, but on a local level their achievements matter. While we have unlimited resources for national and world news, there is only one resource for community news and service -- The Goochland Gazette. Thank you for sixty great years of serving the Goochland community. Donna Cottingham Powhatan

believe that a strong community newspaper will allow more people the opportunity to enhance their daily lives and feel a part of the community that they live in. Whether it is in the arts and entertainment, obituaries, employment, or the classifieds, the information that is shard in a community newspaper gives the reader the sense of belonging to that community. The internet is often too difficult to utilize for extracting specific information for the purpose of community events and relations. With a strong community newspaper, we relate to others in our neighborhood and reaffirm our mutual respect for the things that we find important in our lives. Respectfully, Staff Sgt. By staying connected to its readers, the Goochland Gazette will continue to be the only place to go to for what is happening in Goochland for at least another 60 years! Sally Graham Executive Director Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services
