here were presumably no reporters present on the evening of Jan. 19, 1926, as nine Goochland men gathered for the very first meeting of what would become the Goochland County Chamber of Commerce, so it was left to J.M. Carr, the gentleman elected secretary that evening, to record the event for posterity. And record he did, as evidenced by a notebook current Chamber cirector Bonnie Creasy recently came across at the Chamber’s office on Route 6 in the courthouse area. On a slightly yellowed page of the otherwise wellpreserved book, in Carr’s tidy, even script, one can see the birth of the orgaCreasy nization. “It was moved by J.W. Graves and carried by the meeting that those present form themselves into an organization to be known as the Goochland County Chamber of Commerce,” Carr wrote. What follows, over the next 45 pages, is an account of the Chamber’s earliest days, back when farming was the biggest industry in the county, River Road was only in the planning stages, and bringing better telephone service to Goochland was of great importance. The book ends suddenly, without explanation, and Goochland would not have another Chamber of Commerce until the current one

escribed as having the most perfectly preserved Jeffersonian Courthouse in existence today, Goochland County is no stranger to architectural accolades of the highest order. Now, thanks to an ambitious new undertaking by the Goochland County Historical Society (GCHS), residents and visitors to the county will be able to enjoy the historic building and its grounds in a whole new way. In partnership with the county, the GCHS is planning a restoration of the Courthouse Green, rehabilitating the historic architecture and transforming the grounds into a center for visitors and community activities. The project will include improvements to the outdoor space around the courthouse — including new paths, lighting, seating areas and interpretive signage — as see Courthouse > 9 Contributed photo

As Mike Hill says, “Things happen at bridge! Hill found himself in Virginia due to a game of bridge. He was visiting his parents in Chesterfield while he was searching for a job. During the visit, he filled in for a card game. While playing bridge, Hill, an experienced aviator, ended up meeting two executives who needed a helicopter pilot. That was the beginning of his corporate pilot career and the reason he moved to Virginia. Many years later, Hill’s life again changed because of a bridge game. While playing bridge with Pat Maddox, a Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) Board member and volunteer, Hill was encouraged to come to a Building Bridges of Hope breakfast and find out more about GFCFS. Hill has been a volunteer ever since, giving his time and talent to the Food Pantry and Home Repair programs. Along with his wife, Barbara, Hill likes to travel. With a career as a military pilot and corporate pilot, it’s no wonder that they travel frequently.

Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services volunteer Mike Hill serves both the food pantry and the Home Repair Program.
Hill retired from the military after 20 years of service, including serving in Desert Storm. He then went on to work at CSX for 19 years, flying helicopters and five different kinds of jets. Every Tuesday, Hill likes to travel back and forth to FeedMore, the regional food bank in Richmond, where he purchases between 1,400 and 2,200 pounds of food for GFCFS clients. On weekends, Hill often goes to Whole Foods and Food Lion to pickup donated food. “We try to get a lot of fresh produce so our clients have healthy food options, Hill said. As a college student, Hill
worked in construction during summers. He uses those skills today volunteering in GFCFS’s Home Repair program and for Habitat for Humanity. He enjoys working with volunteers who make such a difference in the lives of others, whose homes often need significant repairs. Hill said he knows it’s not easy for GFCFS clients and tries to lighten their load by carrying groceries and by being humorous. “I try to encourage people to volunteer, letting them know what a difference you can make in the lives of our Goochland neighbors in need, Hill said.

Goochland’s First Union Baptist Church, through the Congregations Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter (CARITAS), recently housed 40 homeless women at the church. CARITAS helps to break the cycle of homelessness and addiction in the Metro Richmond area by way of providing temporary emergency housing through local congregations until such time as
they can find housing on their own. Area congregations such as First Union provide emergency care to the most vulnerable people in the region. During the week, the church congregation served almost 900 meals and met basic needs, including toiletries, laundry, showers and other services. They also provided a beautician, musician, games and movies. Each day the church provided breakfast, lunch and
dinner as well as a safe place for the visitors to sleep each night. CARITAS provided mats for them to sleep on as well as linen and a trained CARITAS social worker each night. “My intention as pastor was to try to give these women a sense of normalcy and dignity in their lives and to let them know that God loves them and that we at First Union do too,” Rev. Frank Lomax III said.
‘Shakeout’ event set for Oct. 15 will help residents prepare for quakes Contributed report
Aug. 23, 2011, was the day the earth shook up and down the East Coast. In the four years since, there have been hundreds of aftershocks — some being strong enough to rattle dishes and wake residents from sleep. Goochland County residents experienced significant damage in 2011, and the Federal Government
declared residents eligible for Individual Assistance. Fortunately, there was no loss of life and no significant injuries. Each year, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management asks communities to register and participate in the “Great Southeast Shakeout.” This is the Goochland community’s
opportunity to practice earthquake emergency procedures. This year’s event will be held at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 15. The link to sign up can be found at http://www.shakeout.org/ southeast/. Additionally, more information on what to do in the event of an earthquake can be found by searching “Great Southeast Shakeout” on YouTube.
“Jesus in the book of Mathew says that each time we look out for ‘the least of these,’ when we feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, take in strangers, clothe the naked, visit the sick and those in prison, we actually do it to and for Him,” Lomax continued. “For First Union Baptist Church, it was an honor to serve them and Jesus.” For more information on CARITAS, visit http://caritasva.org.

Courthouse project will refresh ‘hidden gem’ By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As I’ve mentioned in these pages before, those who call Goochland home usually don’t need to be reminded why the county is a special place. That said, highlighting the county’s treasured history is never a bad thing. With their planned restoration of Goochland’s historic Courthouse Square, members of the Goochland County Historical Society ate offering the county both a reason — and a beautiful place — to gather together. Once the project is complete, the Courthouse will stand sentinel over restored historic buildings, newly created walking paths and areas designated for local festivals and events. Goochland County has always felt, to me, to be a place where history is both revered and made accessible to all. The GCHS’s project is the equivalent of refusing to keep the county’s unique past buried in an archive and instead bringing it out, blowing off the dust, and letting the people see, touch and breathe it all in. The Courthouse Green is a place most of us are familiar with, but few use. We suspect the GCHS’s efforts will change all that, giving both residents and visitors a wonderful place to

celebrate Goochland’s past and enjoy its present.
When it comes to the tragic shooting of reporter Alison Parker, 24, and photographer Adam Ward, 27, many of us have been left with the agonizing sense that very little can actually be done to prevent this kind of senseless, horrifying violence. It hasn’t stopped some, of course, from using the heartbreaking event as a platform to call for policy changes, but that battle is one that was going on long before last week and will most certainly continue. If there is one thing that has been on my mind in the days since these two promising young people were taken from their friends and families, it is the unquestionable need to make sure we let those we love know — every single day — how important they are. As we now know, Parker and Ward’s killer will never be brought to justice. And to look for a “lesson” from such an event is hopelessly futile. But perhaps their tragic deaths will serve as a reminder to us to treasure the moments we have with our family members, our friends and our colleagues, and never to take for granted how much they mean to us.

Shooting of journalists hits close to home By Laura McFarland Powhatan Today
A couple of weeks ago, the news hit a little too close to home for this writer. On Wednesday, Aug. 26, the Internet watched in fascination and horror as a story developed on the shooting of three people during a live broadcast on a news station. Reporter Alison Parker and camerman Adam Ward were killed as they reported a tourism story at Smith Mountain Lake with a chamber of commerce official, Vicki Gardner, a little after 6:30 a.m. Parker and Ward were killed and Gardner was wounded. In the following hours, stories were breaking about the shooting, video of the footage, the reactions of co-workers in the news station where the reporters worked and Gardner’s condition. At the same time, real-time information was coming out about suspected shooter Vester Lee Flanagan II’s identity, his possible motive as
a disgruntled former employee and then eventual capture, at which time it was reported he had shot himself. He did die from the self-inflicted wounds. I had never met these two journalists and cannot imagine the pain their family, friends and co-workers are experiencing right now. They went to work planning to do an upbeat tourism story, and instead found themselves the subject of a tragedy. I said earlier that this incident hit close to home. In July 2012, while I was working as the features reporter for The Winchester Star, a fellow reporter was shot and killed in her home. To this day, the murder of Sarah Greenhalgh remains unsolved. I remember the confusion of that Monday morning in the newsroom, when a phone call from police had editors and reporters start asking that dreaded question, “Have you talked to Sarah?” There was the dawning horror as we realized she was in fact gone
and had been the victim of a murder. Then the confusion, anger and frustration as days, weeks and now years passed with no solid answers. Was it, as police said they suspected, a former boyfriend? Did it have something to do with her job as a reporter? Not having those answers is excruciating on top of the loss of a lovely woman and fellow journalist. Journalists being killed in the United States is rare. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists’ website, five journalists have been killed in this country in direct relation to their work since 1992, when CPJ began keeping records. CPJ promotes press freedom worldwide and defends the right of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal. Before last week, the last journalist placed on that list was newspaper editor Chauncey Bailey, who was shot and killed in August 2007 in Oakland, California. see Shooting > page 7

Post 215 to host ‘PrepareAthon’ in honor of Preparedness Month
Shooting continued from >6 Since 1992, 757 journalists have been murdered globally, 236 journalists have been killed in crossfire or combat situations and 145 journalists have been killed while on dangerous assignments, according to CPJ. Of those, the killers of 661 of those journalists were not punished. So far this year, at least 39 journalists have been killed globally, with the most deadly countries being France, South

Sudan and Syria, according to CPJ. I have great respect for the longstanding tradition of journalism, reporting the news with integrity and the men and women who work to help bring the truth to light. Yes, there have been many stumbles along the way, but I truly believe that journalism in its best form is essential to safeguard the knowledge and freedom of expression so many countries do not have. I have heard this idea expressed in many ways, but
the way American journalist Lester Holt Jr. put it really hits home with me: “You have to go where the story is to report on it. As a journalist, you’re essentially running to things that other people are running away from.” In memory of Alison Parker, Adam Ward and all of the journalists worldwide who died in the line of duty, we salute you. Through these respectful conversations we can discover shared values, common ground, and new ways of relating to one another, appreciating both our differences and our common humanity. Richmond Action Dialogues will present “A Community
Conversation on Race and Prejudice” from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Goochland Company 5 Fire Station, 2710 Fairground Road. The 30-minute documentary, “A Class Divided,” will be shown and followed by a discussion. This is a free public event. Richmond Action Dialogues is a volunteer group formed in Goochland that values dialogue as one of the paths to a more just, inclusive, peaceful, compassionate and sustainable world. continued from >1 well as a major renovation of the historic, four-room stone jail built in 1825 (see box, page 10). The Clerk’s Office, which was constructed in 1846, will be transformed into a visitor’s center. To Goochland County Historical Society Executive Director Phyllis Silber, the project is about offering Goochland residents a way to more easily access their county’s fascinating past and enjoy the beauty of the historic asset. The project came about, Silber said, from a simple question. “We said to ourselves,
‘We have these wonderful distinctions [in the courthouse], now what are we going to do with them?’ ” Chief among their goals, Silber said, is to protect and promote the history of the space, which once served as the very center of civic life in the county. Stories abound about the property, including that of John Pierce, an enslaved man who served as the county’s official jailer from 1811 to 1827, received his freedom in return for his service, and made his home on the old Office Road behind the Courthouse (see box, page 10). Silber said project organizers also hope to create some-
thing that will help local teachers as they work to instill in their students an appreciation for local history. “We’re hoping that this kind of effort will find its way into the local curriculum, so that as these children are being raised in Goochland they will also be able to see this example of their county’s history.” According to County Administrator Rebecca Dickson, the project also is in keeping with county leaders’ emphasis on highlighting Goochland’s history and heritage. “We are all looking forward to the project unfolding and the Courthouse Green becoming a destination location,” Dickson said.
The Historical Society is to be commended for their tireless efforts on this.” Once the project is completed — project planners say the goal is to be wrapped up by early 2017 — Silber and others envision a place where festivals and other events can be held, and where visitors can gather for programmed events or simply enjoy a self-guided tour of the property. In the middle of it all, of course, will sit the stately courthouse, an example of Thomas Jefferson’s efforts to bring what architectural historian Gibson Worsham describes as classical temple architecture to local

was something in which people took great pride. The aim of the renovation effort, Worsham said, is to restore that sense of pride. “The goal is to make the public square open to the public,” Worsham said. Instead of just driving by as so many do now, “We want to encourage people to stop and take a look.”

The Public Square Goochland County’s Courthouse Green was originally the scene of the county’s social and political life. The current Courthouse Green plan is to increase accessibility for visitors; offer regular programmed events; provide additional paths, lighting, and seating; reconstruct the historic stocks; and exhibit a series of interpretive panels to convey information for visitors. The Jail Goochland’s historic four-room stone jail was built in 1825. The restoration will interpret the 1825, 1870 and 1906 phases of the jail’s interior. The jail reflects the history of developing legal systems in America as a young nation, and Goochland County’s early response as a prominent region in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Pierce House The stories of John and Mildred Pierce as jailor and keeper of the Courthouse are among the most important African-American histories of the Courthouse Green yet to be fully told. John Pierce, while still enslaved, is recorded as the county’s official jailor see Restoration > 16

Bulldogs drop opener to Essex, 29-21 Costly turnover, two-point conversion doom Goochland By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
L
ive by the two-point conversion, die by the two-point conversion. Essex coach John Fulks has witnessed both scenarios in a short eight-month period. Last year, the Trojans dropped a 22-20 decision to Altavista after the Colonels thwarted a two-point conversion attempt to tie the game. Last week, redemption came on an unplanned two-point conversion attempt that put the Trojans ahead to stay against Goochland in the season opener in Tappahannock. The final 29-21 score was a tough pill to swallow for Bulldog coach Joe Fowler who said his team had its chances against the state championship runners-up. “We played physical but made too many mistakes,” Fowler said. First-game jitters were evident from the opening kickoff when Calvin Martin mishandled the kick. Making the best of a bad situation, Martin scooped up the ball and galloped 99 yards, shredding the Trojans’ defense in the process. The jubilation on the Bulldog sideline was shortlived, as Essex took the ensuing kickoff and mounted a drive capped with a long scoring pass from quarterback Tesaun Nelson to Kenny Johnson that covered 54 yards and leveled the game, 7-7. Goochland’s first drive from scrimmage ended deep in Trojan territory when Isaiah Taylor picked off a Reid Chenault pass ending the drive. The Trojans cashed in on the Bulldog error when Kevin Dameron scored from three yards out, giving Essex a 14-7 lead. The Bulldogs waited until late in the first half to answer,

great time slot for home-schooled children as well as those with flexible schedules. Additional practices are offered from 4 to 5 p.m. for swimmers ages 10 and younger, and 5 to 6 p.m. for ages 11 and up. Any child that can swim the length of the pool freestyle and the length of the pool backstroke without stopping or touching the bottom is encouraged to join. League fees are affordable with
financial assistance if needed. The league includes two specialty meets, the Holiday Classic in December and Swim Champs in March. There are five opportunities to swim competitively in the season. An informational meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Goochland YMCA. More information can also be found at www.goochlandymca. org.

The Cadets gathered post-scrimmage for pointers from an official. The team brings back experience at the skill positions, which could lead to another title.
Cadets poised for repeat performance? Benedictine prepares to defend VISAA title By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
N
o one is talking repeat or championship around The Abbey as Benedictine prepares for its upcoming season. At least, not yet. “We take the Bull Durham approach around here and we’re not talking championships, but taking each game one at a time,” laughed Cadet coach Greg Lilly following a scrimmage with John Marshall last month. But, it’s tough to discount the returning Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) champi-
ons’ chances as they embark on a new campaign with some key returning elements solidly in place. Scott Bracey returns for this final year before heading to Duke, and his triple threat abilities will make the Cadets hard to handle for any defense. Bracey will assume his “do it all” responsibilities, taking snaps, taking a turn in the backfield or catching passes on the outside. Donaven Tennyson also returns at the receiver position. He too is a Division I commit. Ramon Jones is gone, but Hermitage transfer Sylvester Mayers, Alex Williams and Ellis Brooks return to the Cadet offensive backfield. An inexperienced line is the only question mark on the Cadets’ offensive side of the ball. Most of the starters are
new, but Lilly said he likes what he sees so far. “We’ll be OK there. We’re just young and they will get better as they play together,” Lilly said. Chase Mallory is the only returning starter and will lead the offensive line that features three newcomers, including Jamari Fleming from Atlee. The coach also will benefit from a familiar crew at the skilled positions, especially on offense. “Having Scott and Jake (Waldrop) make the job easier. Jake can move in and take snaps without missing a beat and Scott moves to the outside and you have possibly the best receiver on the East Coast,” Lilly said. The most probable scenario features Tennyson at wide receiver and Bracey at quarterback with Waldrop also get-
ting plenty of snaps. Defensively, the Cadets will depend on speed and experience at the skilled positions. “I like the way we run. We may not have the big name defensive player but we are good from one to 11 and all of them can run,” the coach added. Parrish Gordon and Dean Ngendakuriyo return at the linebacker position. The kicking game is strong with Bracey doing the punting and Will Pittman providing a steady leg for placements and kickoffs. The Cadets rekindled an old rivalry in their final pre-season tune-up at Tucker last week, defeating the Tigers 26-3. And now all eyes turn toward the opener against St. Paul the Great at Randolph-Macon College at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
Chenault found Scott Carter with a 31-yard touchdown strike shortly before the half ended, and the Bulldogs took a 21-14 lead to the locker room. That’s the way it stayed until early in the fourth quarter when Chenault was picked on a fourth and goal from the Trojan 3-yard line. Fowler told his team, “This one is on me. We should have kicked the field goal.” After the game, he reflected on that decision. “I thought we could get it. I looked into the eyes of the guys in the huddle and I believed we could get it,” he said. “If I had it to do over, I’d probably do the same thing even though it wasn’t the right thing.” Essex capitalized on the miscue when Malik Martin ran 56 yards for what appeared to be the tying score. The Trojans lined up for the kick to knot the game, but a bad snap forced holder Rasaun Monroe to scramble and throw the ball. Bryan Richards gathered in the pass and the Trojans were up 22-21 with 9:45 remaining. “I can’t take credit for that. We had planned to kick it, but the snap was bad and it was his call,” Fulks said regarding the two-point conversion. Monroe added another score late in the game, and a stout Trojan defense would not allow the Bulldogs to respond on offense. Fowler made no excuses and gave credit where due. “Those kids (Essex) would not quit. We thought they would get tired in the second half, but they didn’t. They played hard and had a lot of fight in them.” Fork Union comes to town this week for an always-tough contest, prompting Fowler to remind his players to let this loss go. “We go back to work on Monday.”

Ellen Rolston Cabell, 96, of Goochland, Va., died peacefully in her home on Aug. 22. Beloved Nana, artist of life, she is survived by her children, Kathleen Hildreth and William Cabell Jr.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services Cabell were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Grace Episcopal Church, Goochland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to goochlandfreeclinicand familyservices. org/give. TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30
Charles Raymond King, 96, of Richmond, passed away Aug. 22, and is now awaiting his resurrection at the Lord’s return. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Jackie. He is survived by his three sons, John (Gaye), Kerry King (Martha) and Steve (Maureen); three grandchildren, Brian, Christopher and Morgan; his sisters-in-law, Ann King and Sarah Starke; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. A decorated World War veteran
(a Bronze Star), Mr. King became a deeply religious man as a serving member of the Richmond Christadelphian Hall Ecclesia for over 50 years. He also enjoyed playing golf and wood-working, crafting furniture in the Williamsburg style. Building upon research begun by his cousin, Al Chiles, he compiled a complete history of the Chiles family, of which he was a member, back to the 1600s and distributed copies to grateful family members. A small graveside service for family members is being planned with a larger celebration to be held with family and friends at the family home in Goochland in a few weeks. Condolences may be made at woodyfuneralhomeparham.com.

The Clerk’s Office The county erected the present Clerk’s Office in 1846. The one-story, three-bay building features ornamental Flemish bond brick and an unusual curving brick cornice. Heavy iron shutters on the sash windows and central door facing the Green protected the records against theft and fire. The county has assigned the building to GCHS for use as a visitor center as part of the transformed Courthouse Green project. It will require some modifications as an historic structure to return it to public use.

Late September best time to plant bulbs By Nancy Stephenson Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardener
T
ypically the term “bulbs” includes corms, tubers, tuberous roots, rhizomes and true bulbs. This article will refer to all of these as bulbs. A bulb is a complete miniature plant which is encased in fleshy modified leaves, called scales, that contain a reservoir of food. A corm is a base of a stem that becomes swollen with nutrients. A tuber is an underground stem that stores food, but has no basal plant where the roots grow. It has a knobby surface with buds or eyes, where the shoots of a new plant will emerge. A tuberous root is a real root and its food supply is contained in the root tissue. Finally, a rhizome is a stem that is thickened and grows horizontally just below the surface of the soil sending its shoots above the ground. Spring bulbs provide a burst of color during and after winter’s dreary days. Typically, they may bloom February through May before perennials begin to show through the soil’s surface or before annual plants are placed into the landscape. Crocuses are typically the first to bloom and sometimes peek up through the snow. They are available in a variety of colors: white, blue, purple, yellow and bicolor. Hyacinths display a single spike of small, but very fragrant flowers and also come in an array of colors. Narcissus, or as we know them as, daffodils or jonquils, display colors of white, yellows, pinks, and peach. Tulips come in many colors as well, except blue. There are also scilla, leucojum, anemone, chionodoxa, and muscari. Late September is the preferred time to plant spring blooming bulbs, in an effort to allow the roots to develop before the ground freezes. Prior to purchasing bulbs, location should be determined, keeping in mind that a southern exposure, close to a home’s foundation may encourage early emergence of flowers that could result in a freezing injury to the blooms. The location should have adequate sunlight (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day), be well drained, and be a focal point for viewing the blooms. If you
plant to naturalize an area, it is suggested to toss the bulbs and then plant them where they have landed, which will create a scattered and natural effect. Planting in one color is impressive from a distant viewing point than mixing different colors. When selecting bulbs, the earlier they are purchased in the fall, the better the selection will be. To obtain large flowers, purchase the largest bulbs. Inspect the bulbs for damage, disease, and mold. If bulbs cannot be planted soon after they are purchased, they can be stored in a cool place (60-65 degrees F) to keep them from drying out, but they must be planted before the ground freezes to allow
time for the roots to develop. To prepare the soil for bulb plant, a soil test is recommended prior to planting to ensure that the soil’s PH is between 6 to 7. If the PH is less than this, then the soil should be amended with lime. When preparing the planting bed, the soil should be fairly dry and excavated to the bulb’s planting depth, which is typically four times the height of the bulb, measured from the bottom of the bulb. Fertilizer should be mixed in the soil below where the bulb will be placed in that it will aid in the development of the root. In addition, fertilizer will promote larger bulbs the following year. Care should be taken at
this level to avoid compaction of the soil that will be beneath the bulbs, which would result in poor drainage. Clay soils, which are typical in Virginia, should be heavily amended with compost, peat moss or some other source of organic matter. Place bulbs in the excavated bed with growing tips up and refill the bed with the amended soil. If voles are a problem, bulbs can be placed in wire basket and placed into to the bed and covered with soil. Another suggestion would be to line the bottom of the bed with gravel, which discourages voles from digging for the bulbs. Daffodils are typically poisonous; therefore voles and deer avoid this type of bulb. The bed should be watered to settle the soil around the bulbs. Applying a winter mulch of 2-4 inches with finely mulched leaves, pine tags, or straw will prevent alternate heaving of the soil from freezing and thawing, which will damage the bulbs and its roots. This mulch can be removed in the spring before the foliage emerges or can be left in place if it does not obstruct penetration of the shoots. After enjoying your bulb’s bloom, remove the withering bloom to avoid seed development, which will divert food being manufactured through photosynthesis for the next year’s plant and bloom. Apply nitrogen at a rate of ¼ pound over 100 square feet prior to the foliage turning yellow and withering. After the foliage has withered, the bulb is dormant and the foliage can be mowed or cut back. While the foliage might be unsightly during this period, annuals, perennials or groundcovers may be interplanted to hide the fading plants. Once bulbs are dormant, they can be dug and stored if necessary in a well ventilated place and replanted in the fall. Daffodils and crocus should be dug and divided every 3-5 years to prevent overcrowding. Signs of overcrowding exhibit a decrease in flowering size, uneven blooms, and plant height. For more information about planting spring bulbs or if you have any other gardening questions contact the Goochland County Cooperative Extension at (804) 556-5841.
