he Goochland Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Sept. 1, to delay making any final decision on a proposed communications tower in the Hadensville-Fife area. Suggesting that a 30-day deferral would allow more time for research into the matter, board chair Susan Lascolette added that the delay would not negatively impact the tower construction process should they decide to move forward with it. The tower project, which was approved by the Planning Commission on Aug. 4, will help fix deficiencies it the county’s emergency communication network. According to Goochland Director of Information Technology Qiana Foote, the tower would also allow the county to meet all Federal Communications Commission mandates. While Foote described the new tower as a key measure to help increase safety, not all in the county consider it a good idea. Jennifer Mazza, who also spoke see Tower > 4

during last month’s Planning Commission meeting, told the board members during the public comment period that she and her neighbors continue to have concerns about both the health and financial impact of the tower. Citing studies she claimed linked communication towers to negative health effects—as well as falling property values — Mazza asked the board to consider the impact the tower could have on her and her neighbors. “There’s a lot of debate about [the health hazard] but I believe its real,” Mazza said, also noting that the tower would also be unsightly. The tower “is going to be a focal point, and I don’t know how many of you would like a tower right in the middle of your neighborhood.” District 2 Supervisors Manuel Alvarez told Mazza that he understood her concerns, but pointed out that the board had already approved a tower at Central High School on Dogtown Road, one that was closer to residents’ homes

round judges—A. B. Westrick, Kristin Swenson, and Ellen Brown—selected the three finalists from the top nine’s complete manuscripts. Head judge Maya Smart then determined the winner. “The Key to the Quarter Pole is an excellent read about an independent woman with a weakness for hard knocking racehorses. The author showed strong command of character and setting throughout, mapping the terrain of central Virginia and the motivations of the characters with equal aplomb,” said Maya Smart. “The novel’s structure is sound and engaging.” Williams is an award-winning journalist and speaker
who writes humorous essays. Her latest collection, “Bush Hogs and Other Swine”, includes a foreword by Earl Hamner. Mystery writer Rita Mae Brown calls Williams “the country Seinfeld.” Williams holds an M.A. in English Writing from Hollins University. Winner of the 2014 Shann Palmer Poetry Contest, Gail Giewont teaches in the literary arts department at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology in Petersburg. Her novel, Unguided, greatly benefited from a First Pages session during the 2010 James River Writers Conference. Vulture, her debut collec-
tion of poetry, was published by Finishing Line Press in September 2015. Vivian Lawry lives and writes in and around Richmond. She is a past winner of the Sandra Brown Short Fiction Award. Since her first fiction publication in 2003, her short works have appeared in forty-five literary journals and anthologies, from The Alembic to Xavier Review. and had drawn more outcry when it was first introduced. In light of that, “I don’t see how I could morally vote against this tower just because of the location,” Alvarez said. In proposing the 30-day deferral, Lascolette noted that she was open to seeing if more research might change the board’s stance. “We have a situation here where there is a request from a neighbor, so I think we should ask ‘Is there another way to do this?’” Lascolette said. “Let’s explore a few options and bring it back. We might not like what we get but at least we tried.”
used for the assembly of members of the public for social, religious or recreational purposes; or any school or other place or area used for community or public purposes.” Under the proposed amendment, local industrial parks — including West Creek, the soon-to-be home of Hardywood Park Craft Brewery’s new 60,000 square foot facility — will get by-right use as places of public assembly if they are served by public water and sewer. If they are not served by public water and sewer, they will be required to get a conditional use permit. Addressing the board, Goochland resident Lisa Pumphrey said that she was primarily concerned about local government “picking and choosing who has the right to public assembly.” Pumphrey said she hoped the board would review the amendment with regard to its constitutionality. Goochland resident Lisa Dearden also urged the board to reexamine the amendment. Describing the move as a “slippery slope,” Dearden said the county “needs to look at
the language we are using to describe public assembly — because I too believe that this is limiting our constitutional rights.” Asked by the board to offer his comments, County Attorney Norman Sales said that he certainly understood the sensitivity around “limiting a citizen’s right to assemble,” but noted that in this case that was not the intent of the ordinance. Board chair Susan Lascolette said she also understood the concern —“It sounds like we are precluding public assembly anywhere else, like you can do it here but can’t do it anywhere else”— but also insisted there was no reason for alarm. Ultimately, she said, the board was not limiting public assembly in other places, but rather expanding it into areas previously not zoned for it. County Administrator Rebecca Dicksonon noted that the change would be beneficial to places like Hardywood, but added that the wording might need to be revised in the future. “Maybe there is some work to be done,” Dickson said, “and we’re happy to do that.”
*** Several residents expressed concerns about the constitutionality of one proposed ordinance during last week’s meeting, taking issue with a move to designate the M1 and M2 zoned areas of the county as places of public assembly. In the case of zoning language, according to information presented to the board, “places of public assembly” is defined as “any place or area used for the entertainment of the public; any place or area

Trust must be earned The Writing Life By Roslyn Ryan Editor
“T
rust is the glue of life,” said the noted author and businessman Stephen R. Covey. “It’s the foundational principle that holds all relationships.” Perhaps this is true — Covey is a hard man to argue with, after all. But it also may be the reason that so many of us lately are feeling just a bit unglued by what appears to be a serious decline in the wider world’s “trustworthiness quotient.” You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to wonder these days if there is anyone left — besides God and your mother — who actually deserves your trust. Consider this: If you happen to have been born in the United States in the late 1970s, as I was, you have seen just about every facet of American life — both secular and non-secular — become embroiled at one point or another in scandal. You have seen professional athletes admit to spectacular feats of cheating (Lance Armstrong takes the cake here, but that is purely my opinion); celebrated writers admit to grand deceptions (James Frey); and financiers behaving very, very badly. You have seen a president embroiled in a sex scandal, priests hauled off to jail, and pharmaceutical companies found guilty of cov-
ering up the fact that the products they touted as wonder drugs actually killed people. Please don’t get me started about the GM recall or the Duggar family — there simply isn’t enough time. My point here is not to gripe, but simply to offer a reminder that those who question government, or celebrity, or scientific findings are not always conspiracy theorists wearing tinfoil hats. Rather, they are sometimes the proverbial canaries in the coal mine. They are those who continue to chip away at the veneer presented to the world until the truth finally peeks through. As county residents continue to strategize and mobilize against plans to spread biosolids on county farmland, there may be the temptation on some people’s part to roll their eyes and dismiss the protesters as uninformed alarmists. However, as many of those concerned about biosolids will tell you, the fact that they remain uninformed is the problem. A recent meeting held by the Department of Environmental Quality left many cold, and wondering if there will ever be a satisfactory answer given to their oftrepeated question: “What exactly is in this stuff you are spreading and how can we know it’s safe?” The DEQ clearly does not yet have the trust of the community. It would be nice if they made a bit more effort to earn it.
F
or local writer Marilyn Bishop, author of the children’s book “Sampson and the Gang from Hound Holler,” writing has become something of an escape. After working long hours as a currency analyst, “Writing books provides a refreshing and creative outlet from the complexity of technical writing,” Bishop says. Bishop and her husband Allan live in Rockville, where they have room for their hounds and can also be near their two grown children and four grandchildren. Both Bishop’s first book and the recently published “Queenie: A Story of Hope”— the tale of a beloved foxhound that flees in panic during a storm and them must find her way home — are available at www. barnesandnoble.com and www.amazon. com. We recently caught up with Bishop for a quick chat.
How long have you been writing? “I’ve been doing technical writing at my job for many years, but I only began “pleasure” writing on the side in 2012. The two writing styles are different in many ways. Pleasure writing involves an emotional connection to the characters and the freedom to take the plot in different directions. All in all, it provides a much more creative outlet.”
What sorts of things inspire you? “I am definitely inspired by my hounds. Dogs teach us so much about love, loyalty, appreciation, and perspective. They remind us to enjoy simple moments and to focus on what is really important in life. Evenings in our kennel are magical because all of the stresses from the day just melt away. There is no better therapy.”
Who are some of your favorite writers? “I am definitely a Jane Austen fan. My favorite book of all time is Pride and Prejudice. My second favorite is To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee). My third favorite is Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte).”
What advice would you give to people who want to write but aren’t sure where to start? “I took a correspondence course on writing, which involved monthly assignments that were critiqued by an instructor. Each focused on a different skill. I also read a couple of “how to” books on writing. I would highly recommend “The First Five Pages” by Noah Lukeman.” Would you like to be featured in The Writing Life or know someone else who would? Goochland County will gather Friday to remember 9/11 Dear Editor, The public is invited to join local first responders in remembering the event of September 11, 2001. Goochland County is the proud caretaker of two large pieces of steel that came from
the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Several years ago some members of Goochland Fire-Rescue Company #1 in cooperation with the Freedom Flag Foundation constructed a reflection area to house the steel. This gave Goochland County and its residents a lasting memorial where they could sit and reflect as well as teach children and grandchildren about the event of that
day 14 years ago. Annually the community has been gathering at this site to reflect, share, and remember the sacrifices and loss of that day. All residents are invited to this year’s Remembrance Event which will be held at 7 p.m. at Company # 1 (180 River Rd West) this Friday. Chief William MacKay Goochland Fire-Rescue

Is it time to rethink your lawn? Options abound for those tired of annual fight to keep grass green
By Jan Crampton Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardener
S
eason after season, many homeowners in our state continue to fight “turf battles,” mowing and edging, feeding and treating, their
grassy spaces. But what many lawn-warriors might not realize is that in Virginia, there is no turf grass ideally suited for our seasonal climate. Our lawns are usually at their prettiest and healthiest during cooler periods, only to struggle during the heat of a Virginia summer. Yet each year, many people work very hard and spend money
to keep their lawns looking green and weed-free. Attitudes about perfectly maintained lawns might be changing, however. With increasing concerns about water consumption and damage to watersheds from pesticides and fertilizer run-off, many homeowners are thinking about alternatives

to a traditional lawn. Whether you intend to replace a lawn completely or just decrease the amount of grass you maintain, there are many ways to accomplish those goals. This article will discuss a few of the most common. Moss: If you’ve been battling moss in your shady areas, chances are you have work to do to encourage the grass and discourage the moss. Moss grows well in soil that is cool, constantly damp, compact, and somewhat acidic. To rid the moss from your lawn, you must address those conditions, and for some yards, that could be a lot of work. Increasingly, homeowners with shaded property are choosing not to eradicate moss but instead to allow it to fill in larger areas. Because so much of Central Virginia features lovely wooded spaces, this approach is becoming more popular. Moss thrives under most of the deciduous trees found in Virginia, though it will not grow well under conifers. To encourage a shady space to become a mossy area, all that’s needed is to remove the grass that does grow there and keep it free of leaves and other debris. If you’d like to speed the spreading process, you can transplant patches of moss from an area with condi-
tions very similar to your target site. Keep the transplanted moss thoroughly watered and be patient; it may take several seasons to achieve the look you want. Landscaping: There are many approaches you might take to replacing turf with other plants, depending on factors such as the size of an area, its sun exposure, and the moisture conditions. For example, you might allow a large area to become a “freedom lawn,” with plants such as clover or wild violets allowed to grow wherever they will. Other homeowners have sown seeds for perennial wildflowers directly on their lawns, stopped mowing, and allowed these plants to “take over.” Imagine a lawn that offers a bloom-filled view from May to October. If you love your lawn but not the maintenance it requires, reduce its size by adding borders, trees and shrubs, and perennial beds. These features also work well in place of grassy hillsides, where mowing might be more effort. You can limit the amount of weeding you’ll need to do by including dense ground covers in your landscaping. local Cooperative Extension office, or at the library. Knowledgeable people at greenhouses and garden stores will help you select the right plants for your spaces. Mulching: Converting grassy areas to mulch is particularly effective under trees or at the wooded edges of lawns. Adding mulch is actually much better for the health of trees and large shrubs than having turf on top of their root-growth areas. In the heat of summer, simply observe where on your lawn the grass becomes sparse, even with adequate watering, and consider putting mulch on those areas instead. To eliminate any grass that does grow there, first put down a layer of decomposable material, such as newspaper

The nasty little creatures are fall webworms (Hyphantria cunea). These caterpillars — often confused with tent worms or bag worms-- begin their webs from the ends of the branches. Fall webworms are often found on pecan, sourwood, and persimmon trees at the end of summer or fall. But paw paws and other trees often prove attractive to them as well. Fortunately, webworm damage is mostly cosmetic. Worry only if you have an already failing or distressed tree. Fall webworms can be destroyed by pulling down and destroying the webs within reach. Should you use pesticide? If you do spray, remember to cover the foliage closest to the web mass. Spraying only the web will not kill all the caterpillars. The safest pesticide to use is Bacillus

Field Day of the Past marking 24 years Contributed report
When Field Day of the Past organizers held their first event back in 1992, none of them imagined that this small steam and gas show would grow into an event which encompasses three days and attracts approximately 45,000 individuals annually. As Joseph E. Lisefeld, III, current president and son of the original president said, however, “We began adding one more attraction and then another, and over the years, we have expanded into a major event.” This year, the “major event”
will celebrate its 24th anniversary which, in typical fashion, has added new attractions to its cornucopia of offerings which are designed to entertain and educate young and old alike. New attractions for this year will include Lamar Banister’s Songs of Ol’ Virginny, a musical presentation featuring numerous traditional songs and instrumentals and will blend some of the stories behind the tunes with demonstrations on various instruments. One of the largest private collections of

Everyone will also get a belly laugh from the antics of Robinson’s Racin’ Pigs and Paddlin’ Porkers. For those who enjoy a good pull, Truck Pulls are set for Friday and Saturday nights and the tractor pullers will be facing off on Saturday and Sunday. Lawn and garden tractor pullers will have an opportunity to show their stuff on Saturday and Sunday, as well. For those too young

Goochland golf having banner year By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
G
road when we get into district play.” And he did note some positives taken away from the match up with a bigger stronger team. “Defensively we were much more fundamentally sound. Our defensive staff made a few tweaks in alignment and personnel and it is going to pay huge dividends down the road,” he said. “Tonight was just a matter of them being physically bigger and stronger than we were,” Fowler added. He also noticed something else about his 2015 squad. “Our kids battled to the end and not once all night did anybody point any fingers. They pulled together and stuck together because they are young men with character,” he said. “These guys will take the lessons we learned tonight and turn them into positives.” The team showed that tenacity on a fourth quarter drive that covered 77 yards and ended when John King covered the final yard. Several players stood out in the effort including fullback Wyatt Smith and defensive phenom
oochland senior golfer Davis Paone said that, overall, the Bulldogs’ golf squad has been “kicking some butt” this season. They have only had two losses this season, marking a banner year for the program. “This is the best season I’ve ever had,” he said. “I’ve got my scoring average in the 30s.” Through nine holes on Sept. 1 at The Hollows, however, was not Goochland’s greatest showing. Paone shot a 45, 10-over the par 35. “It went bad. It was disappointing. I’ve had worse rounds,” he said. “There were a couple missed putts, it was disappointing today.” Paone said the No. 9 hole, in particular, was tough. “I had an unlucky shot off the tree,” he said. “I hit my tee shot into the trees, and I had a bunch of bad chips.” Longtime golf power Randolph-Henry shot a team score of 156, with Goochland 11 shots behind with a 177. Buckingham shot a 189. Goochland’s Nemetz, JM Donaldson and Peyton Butts all shot 9-over 44s. “Overall, I was happy with how we played Tuesday,” Goochland coach AJ Nash wrote in an email. “Through five holes, we were down about two or three strokes as a team to Randolph Henry, and the pressure got to us a little bit. We need to work on playing in pressure situations, so that we can get ready for a deep run into the post season.” Nash wrote that Paone has been playing “stellar” golf, and that Butts has been “rounding out into top form.” Donaldson has been a consistent player and the fourth score has been from several different players this season. After Tuesday’s Match, Paone said that he and his teammates just had to shake off the bad rounds and get back to playing the golf the Bulldogs had been playing. On Thursday against Prince Edward and Amelia, Goochland got back to its winning ways, with a 169 to Prince Edwards’ 185 and Amelia’s 197. Paone and Butts were low-score for the Bulldogs, each with 5-over 39s.

here was no sign of panic in the locker room after Goochland dropped its second game of the season, 38-10 to Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA). The Blue Devils utilized an oversized and experienced offensive and defensive line to thwart a persistent effort by the home standing Bulldogs. “We knew that there was always a possibility of starting 0-2 because we scheduled quality opponents,” Coach Joe Fowler said after the defeat. “ We could have scheduled two cupcakes and been 2-0 right now, but that wouldn’t make us a better team. To improve as a football team, you have to face adversity,” he added. And, they kept it close thanks to a persistent
defense by the Bulldogs. After the Blue Devils opened with a field goal, Goochland answered with a 30-yard effort of its own by kicker Sullivan Young knotting the score at three. Blue Devil quarterback Chris Basso and Taurus Carroll took matters in their own hands in the second period, connecting on two scoring passes before the half. Carroll gathered in a 10-yard pass with 3:30 remaining in the half, and added another with a 37-yard strike shortly before intermission. Any hopes of a Bulldog comeback were quickly dispelled when the Blue Devils took the second half kickoff and drove 65 yards for another score. Tyler Simon capped the drive with a 10-yard run, and FUMA was up 24-3. Fowler said the disappointing start could provide a valuable lesson for his team as the season progresses. “We have an experienced team and they understand the big picture,” the coach said. “The two games we have lost will benefit us down the

Cadets’ defense silences Wolves By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
ASHLAND- Smothering, unyielding defense. That’s what the Benedictine Cadets were all about in their season opening 52-7 win over the St. John Paul the Great Wolves. St. John Paul the Great runs a single wing offense, and the Cadets (1-0) just shut it down from the start. The Wolves managed only 115 yards of total offense, 92 of which came on the ground. Since running plays, for the most part, were unsuccessful in the first three quarters when the starters were all in, quarterback Brandon Perroots tried to get the passing game going. The Cadets defense was able to shut that down too, intercepting Perroots twice, including one returned for a 24-yard touchdown by Dean Ngendakuriyo in the first quarter. “That single wing offense John Paul runs, they run it really well,” Benedictine coach Greg Lilly said. “I was
proud of how our guys played assignments, were unselfish in playing their assignments. It was a team effort defensively, all 11 guys swarming to the ball.” The defensive success led to offensive points, as the defense was also able to recover three fumbles from the Wolves that set the Benedictine offense up. Scott Bracey had 187 combined yards and a touchdown for the Cadets, with Isaiah Jones, Travis Lipscomb, James Pinder, Donaven Tennyson, Wendell Davis, Sylvester Myers and Chris Collins all scoring one touchdown a piece. Lilly said that he wants to keep the identity of being physical and running the ball, but passing will increasingly become more of a part of the Cadets look. “Our identity for the last three or four years has been to run the ball, and then play action,” he said. “That’s gonna change a little this year, just because Scott, Donaven, Jake (Waldrop), Justin (Smith) and Anthony (Roberson)…a bunch of good skill guys. just gotta put the ball in the air.” The Cadets outgained the Wolves 462-115, despite Benedictine’s 13 penalties for 146 yards. “We will work on (the pen-
alties) going forward,” Lilly said. “I’ve gotta look at the film. Some of it was aggressive penalties. Some of it was just knucklehead stuff.” Benedictine will travel to Bishop Sullivan for a 7 p.m.
start time on Sept. 11. “Everyone we play is going to be hard,” Lilly said. “They’re good, we played them last year. They’re very talented. We’ll have our work cut out for us.”
Bulldogs’ volleyball team off to hot start By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The Goochland volleyball team is off to a good start to the season. In the opening game against Amelia, the Bulldogs stout defense and highpowered offense pushed Goochland to a straight sets win over Quad Rivers Conference foe Amelia 25-7, 25-13, 25-11. “I feel very good about my
top eight,” Goochland coach Jennifer Erixon said. “They are very, very strong. A lot of them have been playing together for a long time.” The Bulldogs only trailed briefly in the first two points of the first set against the Raiders, but were on cruise control after that, including a five-point run to end the opening set, and an eightpoint run during set two. Madelyn Ott had 11 kills, five aces and two blocks for
the Bulldogs during the game. Alexis Wiggins had eight kills, while Josie Summitt had 33 assists and five aces. Maddie Parker had eight kills and four aces. Ott and Wiggins, in particular, have gained valuable experience over the summer. “Madelyn played club ball at U-Turn, Alexis played at (Richmond Volleyball Club),” Erixon said. “Maddie Parker just hits. They’re very aggressive.”
Erixon added that her setter, Summitt, has done well in her role of running the plays on the floor, and has developed nicely with her knowledge of the game, defense and strategy. The Bulldogs continued their winning ways on Sept. 2 against Nottoway and swept Cumberland on Sept. 3 25-12, 25-7, 25-8. Ott had nine kills and five blocks in that game, while Wiggins had six kills and four blocks. Summitt had
24 assists and nine aces. “I’m definitely excited for the season,” Erixon said. “I really enjoy coaching this team. It is a lot of fun. I wanted to make sure the chemistry was working, and it obviously was.” Goochland continues their season on Sept. 8 at home against Randolph-Henry, on the road at Prince Edward on Sept. 10 and again on the road against Buckingham on Sept. 15.
17
Bulldogs continued from >16 Akia Timberlake. “I thought Wyatt Smith ran with authority in the second half and hopefully that will carry over into next week,” Fowler said. “On the defensive side, KK Timberlake and Cannen Shell played with great effort and technique against guys who were much larger. If we can continue that effort, I feel good about the next eight games.” The Bulldogs host Amelia this week, and Fowler is looking for positive results. He also realizes the challenges. “Amelia is always athletic. They spread the field and try to utilize their speed. William Green had a great game against us last year at QB and we will need to keep him on his heels with a great pass rush and coverage.” Looking at the big picture, Fowler nor his team is panicking with the 0-2 start. It’s not the first time the team began slowly. “In 2012 we were in a similar position, we started 1-2 with losses to FUMA and Monticello,” Fowler said. “But those games made us better and we learned from them and rattled off 12 wins in a row. Hopefully things will turn out the same way.”
Golf continued from >16 Nash said that he’s been happy with how the team has bonded this season and stuck together. “They have really come together to be a team, and it has been fun to watch that relationship develop,” he wrote. “With some more concentrated work on specific pieces of our game, I am hoping to make it to the state tournament.” Goochland has three matches remaining on the schedule prior to the playoffs beginning.
