oochland’s annual Field Day of the Past will kick off this Friday, marking the 24th year for the celebration of yesteryear. But for those picturing a musty museum-style exhibit of old odds and ends, be warned: The actual experience of Field Day will likely knock your socks off. see Field Day > 1

The Goochland Animal Shelter, located at 1900 Hidden Rock Lane in Goochland, has the following pets available to a good home: an 18-pound, neutered male, orange tabby, about 5 years old; a black and white male kitten, about 8 weeks old; and a black and white male kitten, about 13 weeks old. The shelter is hosting a rabies clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Route 522 and Fairgrounds Road (old Fairgrounds lot). The cost is $10 per vaccination and all proceeds will benefit the animals in the Goochland Animal Shelter. Participants should bring a copy of current rabies certificate to receive a three-year vaccine. There will be a maximum of 300 vaccines administered, and this event is first come first served. The shelter is still in need of donations of cat litter, and this month they are waiving the adoption fee for all cats. Anyone interested in adopting a pet is urged to visit from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The facility has many lost dog and cat fliers posted. For more information on these pets, as well as the many more still in need of homes at the Goochland Animal Shelter, call (804) 5565302. You also can visit the shelter on Facebook at “Goochland County Animal Control.”

Centerville volunteer firefighters will host open house event Oct. 3 Contributed report

Fires can start anywhere in the home and typically start during the hours when most people are sleeping. Fires started by candles, cigarettes, space heaters, electrical malfunctions — all common causes of home fires — can be caught early if working smoke alarms are placed inside the homes in the right areas. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommendations, all levels of the

home should have one, as should every hallway and every bedroom. This year, the NFPA is promoting the “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep” campaign to encourage families to place working smoke alarms in their bedrooms. The Centerville Volunteer Fire Rescue Department at 52 Broad Street Road will be hosting its annual Fire Prevention Week Open House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3. This event is open to

the community and a free lunch is provided. Firefighters from the station will be providing a live safety demonstration to show how quickly a fire can spread in the home and how quickly a properly functioning smoke alarm can activate to save lives in the event of a house fire. Goochland residents are encouraged to bring their families out for free food, free home safety information and live safety demonstrations.

Have you ever wondered what the school experience looked like for students in Goochland 100 years ago? Thanks to a permanent exhibit opening tonight at Goochland High School, interested residents will have a chance to view vintage historical photographs of student life in Goochland. History in Our Hallways, a two-year partnership between Goochland County

Public Schools and the Goochland Historical Society, will be unveiled during a 6 p.m. reception at Goochland High School (3250 River Road West). “History in Our Hallways is another example of how our Goochland County Schools’ leadership team continues to bring distinction to our school system,” Wayne Dementi, president of the Goochland Historical Society, said. “The invitation to the Goochland Historical Society as a community partner to engage students in the interpretation and presentation of historic images, both in the classroom and to the community at large, is just brilliant.” According to Goochland County

School superintendant James Lane, the photos exhibited tonight will represent only a small portion of the collection. He said he hopes to expand the exhibit over the next few years by encouraging community members to send photos. Present-day students have taken key roles in making tonight’s event happen: The photos on display were mounted on canvas by students in the Career and Technical Education program and a tour of the exhibit will be led by students from the schools’ new Teachers for Tomorrow program. There is no admission fee to attend the reception, but donations will be accepted for the Goochland Education Foundation.

Free Clinic taking part in ‘Amazing Raise’ Contributed report

Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services (GFCFS) is taking part in this year’s Amazing Raise, which started Wednesday and continues today (Sept. 16-17). Amazing Raise is the annual 36-hour online giving challenge that inspires and empowers the community to support local Central Virginia nonprofits by clicking and donating. With the minimum of $25 donation or as much as you want to donate, you can click and donate to GFCFS at Gooc

hlandFreeClinicAndFamilyServices.org through 6 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 17). Through a Smartphone or computer, anyone can donate any time during this 36-hour period. The donation period started at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Throughout Amazing Raise, participants can help GFCFS turn a $25 donation or more into $25,000 in several ways. One way was to donate with one or more $25 individual gifts between 8 and 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept.

Presents—

16, for the Primetime Prize of $1,000. Donate while watching a favorite TV show during that two-hour period. Also, donate with one or more $25 individual gifts between 4 and 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, for the Procrastinator Prize of $2,000 for the most unique donations during that two-hour period. The GFCFS programs include medical, mental health and dental clinics that see nearly 1,200 patients; food for 500 families, including over 400 children; clothes for over 700 clients; and medical

transportation that traveled nearly 40,000 miles last year throughout Goochland and into Richmond. A $25 donation equals 100 meals or 150 medical items. Those who do not have access to a computer or a Smartphone, may contact Adair Roper at (804) 556-6260 to make donations over the phone. Roper said Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services could not provide these critical services without the continuing support of the Goochland community.

A change for the better By Roslyn Ryan Editor

With the 2015-2016 school year underway for college students, I found myself last weekend walking near the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, my alma mater. As is always the case when I get a chance to visit that part of the city, I was amazed at the transformation the area has undergone in the decade and a half since I called it home. Whole city blocks where there once were abandoned buildings or vacant lots have now been claimed and used to support the school’s expansion. Of course, the change of scenery and general sprucing up of the campus isn’t the only thing that is different these days. And VCU certainly isn’t alone among the schools that have been challenged — or, in some cases, compelled — to begin having frank and honest discussions with students about subjects that 15 years ago might not have been broached. This month marks the start of the first full school year since an article in Rolling Stone magazine helped begin a national dialogue on sexual assaults on college campuses, specifically how to prevent them from happening and how best to support victims. While the article was eventually discredited, the topic is still being widely discussed. To be sure, the issue did not suddenly become a problem on

campus overnight. But the courage and leadership to address it is something that has only recently been seen. No, it isn’t comfortable — not for students and certainly not for parents. But it is necessary. Of all the changes I’ve seen since leaving school, it is definitely among the better ones. *** As the summer of 2015 slips off into memory and the bustle of fall begins, we’ve all certainly noticed the days begin to get shorter. While this need not wreak havoc on our daily routines, there is one thing I would humbly ask of those who prefer to exercise outside in the late afternoon and early evening: please use caution. The other day, driving down my street at around 7:30 p.m., I came across one walker and one runner. There are no sidewalks in my rural neighborhood, so both were travelling along what I suppose you could call the shoulder. Alarmingly, though neither was wearing particularly dark clothing, I was unable to see either until I had nearly passed them. I shudder to think how the situation might have been different had a driver come along who was distracted by a cell phone or simply not paying attention. I’m not suggesting anyone needs to wear a miner’s helmet when they head out for a walk. But a bit of caution — and a reflective vest — is certainly not a bad idea.

GHS athletes run for kids who can’t By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Watching football is probably the last thing on the to-do list of parents who have children with muscular dystrophy (MD) … most of the time. On Saturday, Sept. 26, most of them will make an exception and tune in to see coaches from around the country unite for one cause. And while winning and losing are usually foremost on the minds of these competitive leaders, they’ll

embark on a mission that brings new meaning to those words. Each September, coaches from across the nation wear armbands with the words “Coach to Cure” on them. It’s an effort to raise awareness and money for muscular dystrophy research and treatment, and represents a partnership between the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Parent Project for Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD). PPMD is a nonprofit organization searching for cures and treatments for

the thousands of children who suffer from various forms of MD. Most of their fundraising efforts are devoted to research, and the organization has one of the lowest administrative percentages of any major charity. The group is headed by Pat Furlong, who lost two sons to MD, but never gave up the fight to cure a disease that robs children of their mobility and, eventually, their lives. It’s a serious mission run by serious people who won’t take no for an see Game > 7

Letter to the Editor Lions Club’s BBQ was a success once again Dear Editor, The Goochland Lions Club held its annual BBQ on Sept. 10, at Dover Lake and it was a success thanks to the support of the community. Goochland Lions sold tickets throughout the greater Richmond area and also had sup-

port from the following sponsors: Doug Brandmahl with Farm Bureau Insurance, Woodson Auto Sales, Brooks Auto Sales, S.B. Cox, and Richmond Printing Service. Funds raised by the BBQ event support the Club’s programs for the year: high school scholarships, educational programs offered by the American Legion for high school juniors, eye glasses and eye exams for people in

need, hearing assistance and many other sight assistance programs. The Goochland Lions Club would like to thank our sponsors and the public for supporting our BBQ and making it a success for the community. The BBQ is the primary means by which the club funds its community programs. Bob Hammond Goochland Lions Club

ily for caring about Jack and other kids suffering from MD. It’s a special evening for him, but, more importantly, it’s an opportunity for the Bulldogs to show their true character and compassion. The team takes on Randolph Henry for this year’s Coach to Cure event, but they’ll be challenging a much more intimidating opponent in their minds

continued from >6 answer. As most of you know, the effort has a much more personal meaning for my family and me. My son Jack suffers from Duchenne, the most critical form of MD. PPMD offers a glimmer of hope for families like mine where sometimes it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, and maybe, more accurately, hopeless. During the week leading up to the Coach to Cure Saturday, teams invite MD patients to their practices, interact with the kids and get a first-hand look at real life challenges. They quickly realize that challenges on the field are only minor when compared to the daily struggle that MD kids endure. For the past four years, Coach Joe Fowler’s Goochland Bulldogs have hosted a Coach to Cure event, and Jack serves as honorary guest. He spends time with his favorite football team and flips the coin to open the contest. It’s an emotional experience for me as kids who have spectacular muscles that work better than OK take a moment to know a kid who will never score a touchdown or make an important tackle. The players realize that, and, somehow, they share their enormous abilities with Jack — and watching them run somehow makes him feel better. I’ve often said they run for the kids who can’t. Words fall woefully short of expressing the personal appreciation and admiration I have for Coach Fowler, his team and the whole GHS fam-

as they fight and win for kids, except for Jack, they have never met. Please join us on Friday, Sept. 25, for this year’s game. It’s homecoming at Goochland, so come early and stay late. I’m sure the Bulldogs won’t disappoint with the final score, but, in reality, they are winners in my mind long before the opening whistle sounds.

Field Day continued from >1 A feast for the eyes, ears and stomach — and a small slice of heaven for history buffs — Field Day of the past was created in 1992 as an educational event showcasing steamand gas-powered equipment. When Field Day of the Past organizers held their first event, none of them imagined it would eventually grow to encompass three days and attract approximately 45,000 individuals annually. As Joseph E. Lisefeld III, current president and son of the original president, said, “We began adding one more attraction and then another, and, over the years, we have expanded into a major event.” New attractions for this year will include Lamar Banister’s

Songs of Ol’ Virginny, a musical presentation featuring numerous traditional songs and instrumentals, and “Doctor,” Robert Hill’s exhibit on Civil War medical instruments and procedures. The Virginia Civil War Sesquicentennial’s Civil War 150 HistoryMobile also will be present throughout the weekend on one of its last stops before its tour ends next spring. Other Field Day attractions include Brad Matchett’s Agricadabra, an agriculturally based magic show; Jeff Robbins’ mountain music on his pork ’n’ bean car guitar; Harley Dougherty’s chain saw carving, Colonial tinsmithing and 17th century wood working demonstrations; an “oldtimey” photographer; and rail splitters.

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County The Field Day of the Past show grounds are located 14 miles west of Richmond, off Interstate 64, Exit #173. Exit south and watch for signs. Access is available from Rt. 288 and Broad Street Road. ***

History comes to life For those who are interested in primitive American culture, a walk through the Field Day of the Past show grounds offers visitors a reminder of just how physically challenging life was for early Americans. Bits and pieces from the everyday lives of our ancestors have been patched together to form a tapestry of our yesteryears. A log cabin is the centerpiece of these heritage reenactments. Outside, a violin maker discusses the history of this musi-

cal instrument, and traces its many changes through time. On the porch, weavers, spinners, a basket maker and a chair caner are engaged in tasks once common in every American household. Surrounding the cabin is a smorgasbord of re-enactments of various phases of American history. The 17th century woodwrights painstakingly create items necessary in all homes and the Colonial tinsmith plies his tools to fashion cups, hearing horns and trinkets, as well as the necessities that are in demand. Plows, which have now become little more than lawn ornaments, were once vital to American agriculture and are on display. Apple butter making and salt making demonstrations underscore how easy life is now compared to what

it once was. Against a backdrop of a field in which cotton and tobacco once grew but have now been harvested, Southern soldiers lounge around the campfire surrounded by the accoutrements of their profession and those that represent the Lost Cause. In other areas of the grounds, a steam-powered sawmill buzzes as the saw chews logs into lumber. At the sorghum shack, workers are busy grinding cane and cooking it into syrup. At the smoke house, smoke lazes from a slow fire curing the hams hanging from the rafters. The work is hot in the Canning Kitchen where the summer’s vegetables become the winter’s store of food. Next door, the woodwright leisurely carves out a wooden bowl that will see use on the table in the coming months. Meanwhile, down at the Short Pump Grocery, the clientele is enjoying a hunk of cheese and a cold bottle of Coca-Cola. Nearby, the mechanics at the Short Pump Garage also are taking a break, enjoying the strains of music that reach them from the old Springfield Baptist Church that is flanked by antique vehicles.

There also is the age of industry. At Grasberger’s Spoon Factory, workers are busy working to produce as many ice cream spoons as they can before the noon-day whistle blows. Engines rumble, smoke pours, the machinists are drilling metal in the Metal Working Shop, and the diesel engines are putting out power, as well. It also is the age of steam and iron as signified by the steam-powered sawmill and the Pullman Railroad Carand RF&P caboose. The Pullman represents the most modern, most sophisticated and luxurious method to travel. At the Stave Mill, hands oversee the operation of the cutting blades, maneuvering wood through them to cut staves that will be used to make nail kegs. The cotton gin workers are off today, but, when the mill operates, it employs Eli Whitney’s great invention – the cotton gin, which separates cotton fibers from seeds; a great improvement over hand seeding. At the mill, the cotton is carried into a huge hopper that presses the fiber into large bales, ready for shipment around the world. Over in the Print Shop, the see History > 11

History continued from >10 gang sweats away, setting type by hand while one “employee” works the Intertype, making lines of type. This is so much faster than when individual letters were cast and each had to be set by hand before the actual printing process began. Patrons wander in and out of the Field Day Post Office, checking to see if the mail has arrived and been placed in the postmaster’s front housing their box. Here they purchase stamps, envelopes and post cards that are cancelled daily with the cancellation stamp designed solely for use at Field Day of the Past. A generation away and across the road, Bill’s Barbecue is open, complete with a booth, trays, menus and a view of the Boulevard in Richmond, Virginia. ***

Snapshot of the past Arthur Jenkins and his hand-built darkroom trailer will be at Field Day of the Past for the second year in a row. He’ll be showcasing a wide variety of film cameras, and he’ll be there to answer any questions, take portraits, and develop them on-site.

Indeed, his exhibit is a pleasant look back at a nearly extinct way of capturing an image, but to stop there is to dramatically undersell the exhibit. It isn’t simply a nostalgic look back at a different way of doing things. “There’s a certain reality that comes with film photography,” said Jenkins, “and you really don’t get it with digital. With digital technology, there is always a patch if you make a mistake. There’s always a way to cover it up. With analog photography, you have a more honest final product.” Jenkins isn’t just an exhibitor at Field Days of the Past: He’s a warrior, fighting a sometimes lonesome battle against the apparently unstoppable momentum of the digital age — in a world where people are tethered to the Internet by their phones, tablets and computers. “If you think about it, the digital age has brought about abundance of some things, but not an increase in quality,’ Jenkins said. “Look at photography, for example. We have digital photographers who go to events and take thousands of pictures, but none of them are really exceptional. It’s just a mass-scale image capture, it’s no longer art.”

AUTO PARTS

Jenkins believes that the same critique can be applied to other aspects of life, with broad implications. One of these implications, he said, is the lack of physical history and artifacts of the digital age, which is especially troubling. “When archaeologists are going through our ruins, they’ll think the world ended sometime between 2000 and 2012. We have no physical history now.” Indeed, formats of computation will change, and somewhere along the way important historical information will be lost to the ages. Of course, there is the more human aspect as well. “With digital photography, digital everything, the act of looking through boxes of old pictures in the attic with relatives is lost. Scrolling through a computer full of pictures just doesn’t have that effect, and those photos won’t even be around forever, anyway.” At first, when he says he’s performing an important historical task, it’s easy to perceive this as an error in perception on his part. In reality, however, he is exactly right. By taking a few photos and talking to people about it, Jenkins is doing so much more.

Bulldogs bounce back against Raiders Chenault’s aerial attack nets three scores for GHS By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Early in the season, most football coaches are looking for one thing as their teams traverse through the opening contests: improvement. After two opening season losses, that’s exactly what Goochland coach Joe Fowler got as his Bulldogs opened James River District play with a 38-6 thumping of neighboring Amelia. “We played a lot better this week. We were more physical with a team we matched up better with than our past two opponents,” Fowler said after the victory. Considering the first two losses do not count in season power points, the win sets the course for Goochland’s run in Conference 2A. It also was quarterback Reid Chenault’s first full game without injury. The senior signal

caller injured his shoulder early in the game against Essex, and faced FUMA with no practice the week before the game. “His timing was off last week,” Fowler said. The senior showed no hints of the injury as he lit up the Raider secondary for three aerial scores. His efforts were aided by quality efforts from receivers Scott Carter, Calvin Martin and Cordell Mattox. “I couldn’t ask for better receivers,” Chenault said. “They make plays for me.” He also credited his offensive line for allowing him the time to find the open receiver. “My hat’s off to them. I didn’t get rushed one time tonight,” he said. Goochland’s vaunted running game also took steps in the right direction with three backs combining for 140 yards. But, it was evident from the opening whistle that Fowler comprised a game plan that focused on the passing game. Scott Carter started the

Myers’ big dream hinges on social media votes Babybel contest closes Sept. 25 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Contributed photo by Scott Boehm/Invision for Bel Brands/AP Images

Professional football player and AJ McCarron spent the day with Mini Babybel’s Big Dreamers Contest finalist Dylan Myers to show him what it’ll take to achieve his dreams.

Sometimes, the biggest things in life can come from noticing the smallest details. Cartersville resident Misty Myers was entering a Cumberland County teacher in a contest when she noticed

another contest at the bottom of an email. “I thought, well, go ahead and enter (her son) Dylan,” she said. “The question was what ‘was Dylan’s biggest dream?’ and ‘what was my biggest dream as a child?’ I answered that since Dylan was fouryears-old, he’s wanted to play football for the University of Alabama and then continue on into the NFL. My biggest dream was to be a veterinarian,

but now I have an accounting firm in Powhatan.” That entry and those answers have taken Dylan Myers places that he could have only dreamed before. Now, he stands as one of three finalists in the Babybel Big Dreams contest. The contest opened Sept. 7 and runs through Sept. 25. Votes can be cast on the Babybel Facebook page. Contest continued from >12 winner receives a $50,000 scholarship. Every vote also goes towards a $1 donation (to a maximum of $50,000) to a Boys and Girls Club in the winner’s local market. The Myers family has started getting the word out to drive up the vote for Dylan. “We are sharing on Facebook,” Misty said. “My husband is a firefighter, so we have a brotherhood there. We’re in a small town. I’m also from a small area in southwestern Virginia and they are connected. I have my business and doing some business networking. We are trying to spread the word any way we can. Everyone is reaching out.” Anyone who votes will be entered to win a year’s worth of free Mini Babybel cheese. Part of the contest was pairing the finalists with star role models in their chosen profession. Dylan chose football and was surprised during a trip to Chicago by former Crimson Tide quarterback and current member of the Cincinnati Bengals AJ McCarron. Dylan was, to put it mildly, ecstatic. “When I turned around and saw him, I was just in so much shock,” he said. “To see someone you’ve been looking up to since you were little and see him in real life is so much different than seeing him on TV.” McCarron was a fifth round

period, but the Bulldog defense sniffed a fake punt and forced a turnover on downs. Scott Carter gathered in the bomb toss from Chenault and set the Bulldogs up deep in Amelia territory. Sullivan Young put the final touches on that drive with a 35-yard field goal putting Goochland up 17-0. Raider quarterback William

Green executed a power read play shortly before the half that resulted in a 67-yard touchdown run for the senior. The Bulldogs quickly answered with a quick strike of their own when Calvin Martin caught a Chenault pass and plowed in from 18 yards out and the Bulldogs took a 24-6 lead at halftime. In consecutive plays shortly

after the intermission, William Green and Tyjion Parrish both left the game with injuries for the Raiders. Cordell Mattox caught a 32-yard touchdown strike in the fourth quarter, his second spectacular catch of the evening. In the second period, Mattox made a highlight film quality one handed catch on Goochland’s third offensive

series. Calvin Martin put the cap on the evening with a 10-yard run that put Goochland up 38-6. Chenault said he thinks the rough start provided good preparation for future challenges for the Bulldogs. “Those two games made us better as a team,” he said. “They were tough games, but

they made us want to win. Tonight, we put everything together,” Chenault added. Fowler is still looking for improvement from his young Bulldogs as they travel to Staunton to take on R.E. Lee on Friday. “We put the ball on the ground too much tonight,” he said. “That’s the kind of thing you can’t do in big games.”

selection by the Bengals in the 2014 NFL Draft. He went 36-4 in 40 starts under center for the Crimson Tide, as well as leading Alabama to back-toback national championships in 2011-2012. He threw for 66 touchdowns, 30 of which came in the 2012 season, an Alabama record. Dylan, 11, said that he became a fan of Alabama after playing as the team on a video game when he was younger. His fandom continued as he began watching the team on TV, wanting to become a member of the team when he goes to college. “We did some drills,” Dylan said of the day with McCarron. “We went around and threw around a little bit. He taught me some of the drills that he does, with some dummies on the field. We would go back and forth through (the dummies). I would throw him a pass, and then he’d throw me some passes. Overall, I had a

great day with him.” Dylan plays football and baseball for the Goochland Youth Athletic Association. When he played football in Cumberland, he said he was a quarterback. But, after growing a bit and playing in Goochland, he now plays defensive end and tight end. “I like playing defense more,” he said. “It’s better to hit people than get hit.” His mother has seen the competitive fire grow even more in her son since his day with McCarron. “(Getting to meet McCarron) has inspired Dylan so much,” she said. “He came out against Tuckahoe, playing for Goochland on the JV juniors team. He had three sacks, four hurries. I’ve seen a fire in Dylan this year in football. He’s always had a fire, now it is just so much bigger and so much better. He’s striving to do so much more. He’s training so much more. I think

the inspiration and the ability to meet a hero has really made a difference.” If Dylan were to win the contest, Misty said the biggest reward would be the happiness of Dylan being able to reach out for his dreams without the burden of paying for college. “Honestly, I think all of this has been so unbelievable through the process,” she said.

“I think we would be in shock. It’s also just overwhelming joy to know that he would be able to reach his goals because he’d have the monetary access without being in debt for years or for us to be in debt for years.” Even if he doesn’t win the contest, Dylan said he has something that has no price tag in what it meant to him. “I think, overall, (meeting

McCarron) was my prize,” he said. “Even if I don’t get the $50,000, that was a life experience in getting to meet him that most people don’t get to get.” Gabriella, a young artist from Issaquah, Washington ,and Cleopatra, a young dancer from Stockton, California ,are the other two finalists. Voting is open and the winner will be announced on Oct. 5.
