Setting the right example By Roslyn Ryan Editor

I

f you had a chance to watch the Republican debate on CNN last week, then you, like millions of others, had the opportunity to hear a handful of presidential hopefuls tell us their strategies for fixing not just what ails the nation, but also the wider world. While they may have proposed some interesting ideas, I recently developed a plan of my own. What the world really needs, at the critical juncture, is more Wendy. The genesis of this idea came during Saturday’s annual Goochland Branch NAACP Freedom Fund banquet, during which the group’s president, Wendy Sparks-Hobbs, was honored. Sparks-Hobbs is a dynamic speaker in her own right, but what was truly inspiring was what those who know her had to say. As each person spoke, it became clearer what an asset Sparks-Hobbs is to the Goochland Community. During a day and age when it is easy to turn inward, cosseting ourselves and blocking out the problems of the world around us, Sparks-Hobbs has done the opposite.

While building her own successful career with the Virginia Department of Corrections, she has tirelessly worked to lift up those around her. While raising her own son, she has mentored and guided countless other young people through her work with the Goochland Youth Council. And if you can find a bad word to say about a woman who pushed to have the first-ever Girl Scout Troop in a women’s correctional facility — so that incarcerated mothers could share that experience with their daughters — please keep it to yourself. In a world where many politicians seem positively allergic to cooperation and inclusiveness, Sparks-Hobbs is an example of just the opposite. Case in point: Towards the end of the evening Saturday, Sparks-Hobbs took a moment to recognize and thank current Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson for her efforts to find a new life for the former Central High School. So, to all of those who would insist that they have the answers to fixing problems, to uniting people and bringing out the best in all of us — and, yes, I’m talking to you Republican candidates — I would suggest giving Wendy a call. She’ll show you how it’s done.

Letters to the Editor Agnew is the right candidate for clerk

Commissioner will miss serving this community

Dear Editor, On May 5, 1967, I was appointed Assistant Commissioner of Accounts for Goochland County and retired as Commissioner in 2012. From 1982 until 2012, I had the pleasure of working with Dale Agnew in the Clerk’s Office as Assistant Commissioner of Accounts. During this 30-year period, we worked together on inventories and accountings of deceased individuals and incapacitated adults. During those 30 years, I found her to be honest, trustworthy, detailed and a real pleasure to work with. She always had time for me even when I knew she had a lot going on in her office. I strongly encourage you to vote for this lady, Dale Agnew, who has integrity and a lot of common sense. Tom Norman, Retired assistant Commissioner of Accounts

Dear citizens of Goochland, As my retirement nears I wanted to take a moment to thank you for being the best people to work with in my past 34-plus years in the Commissioner of the Revenue’s office in Goochland. It has been a privilege to serve you and to know that I can call you not only my constituents but my friends. I will miss being in office to assist you but I would like to take a moment to let you know how much faith I have in candidate for the Commissioner of the Revenue, Jennifer Brown. Jennifer will not let you down and will strive to continue to make customer service a top priority. She has been working in this office for 16 years as Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue and she knows the duties of this office and what it takes to assist the citizens because she has been here learning the ropes all these years. I have heard that a Facebook page

has been set up by candidate Buddy Bishop. On this page has been some conjecturing that I have not provided sufficient customer service as Commissioner of the Revenue. This really breaks my heart to hear because I have done my best to provide the best customer service that I could and we are continuously told by customers that we have gone above and beyond the scope of duty because we do everything in our power to assist them and make sure they are taken care of in the Commissioner’s office and Goochland DMV Select. If there is anyone that has a problem with an assessment that was made by my office, I encourage you to call me at (804) 556-5807 and let me review your records. There have also been statements made that we do not take credit cards as payments. The Commissioner’s office assesses taxes but we do not collect the payments. Goochland Family YMCA celebrates Back to School Contributed report

Members of the Goochland County School Board recently helped the Goochland Family YMCA prepare local children for the school year. In July, members of the school board, including Superintendent James Lane, served as a “Shopping Buddy” for over 120 local children on the YMCA Bright Beginnings shopping trip. During the trip, children

shopped at the JC Penney in Regency Square Mall for two new outfits, shoes and school supplies. “The YMCA Bright Beginnings program is essential to the success of our students in Goochland,” said Lane. “We know that if children do not have all of the materials they need to be successful, including jackets in the winter or decent shoes, then we cannot

maximize their potential.” Since 1992, YMCA Bright Beginnings has served thousands of children by matching them with a shopping buddy and letting them choose clothes at a local retailer. Monetary donations are still being accepted for YMCA Bright Beginnings. For more information, contact the Goochland Family YMCA at (804) 556-9887.

If you want to pay your local taxes, you must contact the Treasurer’s office and they have very recently started accepting credit card payments onsite in their office. If you come into the Commissioner’s office, you will see credit card machines on the counters where the Goochland DMV Select agents are working. Goochland DMV Select has been provided with credit card machines by the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to accept state payments for DMV transactions since it opened in my office in May 2011. I have also heard it has been inferred that we are not in the 21st century with our computer technology. I am sure the Information Technology staff for the county would find that disturbing to hear

Obituaries HARDIN BROTHERTON Hardin Thomas Brotherton, of Richmond, passed away on Sept. 10. Born in Richmond on May 18, 1978, he lived and shared on this Earth joy and happiness with all people and animals he touched in his life of 37 years. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas Kemper Brotherton Jr.; and his grandparents, Margaret Harrison Reynolds and David Parham Reynolds. He is survived and beloved by his wife, Angela Przybylski Brotherton; his sons, Thomas Kemper Brotherton III and Andrew John Brotherton; his mother, Dorothy Reynolds Brotherton; his sister, Lisa Brotherton Pumphrey (Sean); his niec-

es, Grace Louise Pumphrey and Ava Dorothy Pumphrey; his nephew, Dylan Reynolds Pumphrey; his grandparents, Thomas Kemper Brotherton Sr. and Louise Neff Brotherton; and so many family members and friends who loved him dearly. He attended The Collegiate School and graduated from Virginia Episcopal School (1997), where he was elected Chairman of the Honor Committee (19961997) and won the State Championship at the The Virginia Independent School Wrestling Tournament (1997). In 2009, Hardin graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He had a passion for learning and continued his studies by work-

ing as a research specialist in the Social Behavioral Health Department at VCU and in 2013 received a scholarship for the psychology Ph.D. program with an emphasis on pediatric psycho-oncology at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. During his doctorate studies, he researched, wrote and published six studies in medical journals with his mentor. He was proud to present his research projects at international medical conferences in Amsterdam and Lisbon. He exuded dedication, enthusiasm and excitement for contributing to the improvement of others’ lives, health, and happiness. Hardin’s dedication to serving others continued upon returning to Virginia, where he proudly worked to promote access to

free health care for the poor at the CrossOver Ministry. A defining attribute of Hardin was his incredible talent and passion for music. He had the heart of a poet; he was a talented composer and musician. He sang and performed his music with passion and was blessed to share his love of music with many talented musicians. He wrote three full albums of original work and many unpublished songs. The key to his soul was laughter, which he shared in abundance. Hardin could take any person under any circumstance and find a way to bring a smile to their face. His playfulness was infectious and before long the most serious person in the room would be joining in and laughing in great joy with Hardin. Children, especially his sons, nieces, nephews and cousins, would choose to spend a day with Hardin

over any other option. If he was present, there was laughter and squeals of joy radiating from all of the children. He was a multi-talented and passionate man. The world is not as bright without him. He lived by and recorded these lines in his song “The Game,” borrowing from a poem written by his great-grandfather, Richard Samuel Reynolds, the founder of Reynolds Metals Company: “It is not how did he die, my son, but how did he live.” Hardin lived a great life and braved through darkness to spread joy to all whom he encountered. The family of Hardin Thomas Brotherton received friends for visitation on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Bliley’sCentral Funeral Home in Richmond. The funeral service and celebration of Hardin’s life was held Monday, Sept. 21, at Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in Goochland. In lieu

Two Goochland-made brews will be featured at State Fair Contributed Report

Those attending the 2015 State Fair of Virginia will have two midway options: experiencing Midway Madness, the thrilling, expansive ride and game area; and enjoying Virginia Midway, the fair’s ultra-popular signature craft beer. The tasty wheat beer, made by Midnight Brewery in Goochland County, will once again be featured each day of the 10-day event, which opens Friday, Sept. 25. The special brew will be joined by beers from eight other regional craft breweries, as well as Virginiamade cider and traditional beers. New to the fair for 2015 are beers from Richmond’s Ardent Craft Ales and Old Bust Head Brewing Co. in Warrenton. Center of the Universe Brewing Co. in Ashland will be joining brews from newly named Brothers Craft Brewing in Harrisonburg (formerly Three Brothers), Devils Backbone Brewing Co. in Nelson County, Richmond’s Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery in Goochland

County and O’Connor Brewing Co. in Norfolk. Nelson’s County’s Bold Rock Hard Cider will be served as well. “The beer culture continues to expand in Virginia and across the nation,” Greg Hicks, the fair’s vice president of communications, said. “Craft beer here is truly a Virginia agricultural product, with some locations growing or sourcing local malted barley, hops and flavor adjuncts like local honey, herbs, pumpkins and fruit. “Our mission is to showcase the best of Virginia agriculture, and this industry is an expanding part of it.” Virginia is home to 121 breweries, up from just 44 in 2012. “By putting emphasis on local ingredients, the craft beer industry is growing their connection to Virginia’s agriculture community in a big way, and our farmers are keen to supply them with the products they need to make their outstanding beers,” Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore said July 30 during Hardywood’s announcement of its expan-

sion to Goochland County’s West Creek Office Park. At that same event, Gov. Terry McAuliffe said the craft brewing industry “has been spectacular for the commonwealth of Virginia. It equates to about $623 million a year of economic activity. It equates to over 8,000 jobs.” Nationally, there were 3,739 breweries operating as of June 30, an increase of 699 since 2014, according to the Brewers Association. Virginia Midway has been a hit since it was first unveiled at Midnight Brewery’s tasting room in the summer of 2014. Since then, more and more aficionados have begun requesting the beverage, noted owner Trae Cairns. “We don’t make Midway year-round, so when we are out people keep asking when it’s coming back,” Cairns said. “Wheat beer is easy on the palate, so it can appeal to a large audience — from noncraft beer drinkers to the most sophisticated beer followers.” This year’s State Fair of Virginia will run through Oct. 4. Tickets and fair information are available at StateFairVa.

Bulldogs find redemption in the Valley GHS defeats RE Lee 35-24, led by strong ground game By Jim Ridolphi Contributing writer

G

oochland continued its conquest of Conference 2 A’s Valley Division, with a 35-24 road win over pesky Robert E. Lee of Staunton. It didn’t come easy. The teams traded first quarter touchdowns in a hard-hitting, physical game. It’s just the style of play Goochland coach Joe Fowler expected and prepped for. The philosophy worked as Calvin Martin found the edge on the Leemen defense almost at will, and the Bulldogs clung to a 14-10 lead at intermission. “We felt like we had more depth that they did and that if we could wear them down, we could put it away in the fourth quarter. Fortunately that is how it unfolded,” Fowler said. Fortunately, Goochland’s numbers took a toll on the Leemen as the game progressed, and many of their players were playing offense and defense. “We’ve tried very hard to limit how many guys we have playing both ways” the coach said. “Having that little extra burst in the fourth quarter makes a huge difference.” And Fowler’s pre game plan worked. Fowler said before the game he hoped to work the edges in the first half and hit the middle in the second. “They had a defensive end that we were having trouble with, so basically we just ran away from his side,” Fowler said. “That meant that Calvin got a lot of carries and he made the most of them. Daric Clark did a great job of setting the edge and that allowed Calvin to find some seams. Both Wyatt and Marcus found success on the left

side of their defensive front and we just kept hammering that spot.” Following intermission, Taveon Brown found Stephen Baker with a 32 yard scoring strike and the Leemen took their first lead 17-14, but Goochland answered early in the final period when Marcus Burton scored from five yards out and the Bulldogs retook the lead 21-17. Brown engineered another drive, carrying the final 8 yards on his own, and the Leemen led 2421. A personal foul penalty ended the next Bulldogs drive when they turned the ball over on a fourth and 11 inside the Leemen 30 yard line. Brown lived up the hype and his performance impressed Fowler. “Trying to corral their QB was a tall task, but our defense did a great job of forcing them into mistakes,” he said “Anytime you have a player of his caliber, you know that he is going to get his yards, but our defense did a great job of containing the big plays.” Chenault also has his share of successes with one rushing touchdown and a key pickup on third down for the senior signal caller. The senior ended the evening 8-15 and more than 100 yards through the air. “We don’t like to run Reid very often simply because we don’t want to take any chances of him see Bulldogs > 13

Powers sinks ace for Bulldogs Conference play awaits Goochland golf team By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Calvin Martin and the Bulldogs battled to a win Thursday over Robert E. Lee.

Goochland’s golf team was sparked this past week by a superb shot, one that Bulldogs golfer Riley Powers won’t soon forget. On the seventh hole at The Hollows Cottage Course, playing with teammates Peyton Butts, Meghan Wright and Ben Maguire, Powers swung a 9-iron and the ball went all 124 yards to the hole. A hole in one. “I actually didn’t see the shot, but I heard the joyful shouts,” Goochland coach AJ Nash wrote in an email. “I think Riley perfectly embodies the spirit of a Goochland golfer. She is always happy, smiling, and positive. She never has a see Golf > 13

Goochland’s Calvin Martin (3), seen here against Essex, rushed for over 100 yards against the Leeman in Friday’s 35-24 win.

LEE 7 3 7 7 — 24 it was the right time. He would love to run the ball more often, First Quarter but we need him to stay healthy.” GOOCH – Chenault 2 run (Gordon kick) With less than six minutes left in the final period, Goochland LEE – Z. Simmons 16 run (McGrath kick) reclaimed the lead when Calvin Martin (115 yards on 15 carSecond Quarter ries) scored on a fourth and goal from the two-yard line, and GOOCH – Clarke 2 run (Gordon kick) the Bulldogs were up 28-24. LEE – Cromer 36 FG On the ensuing kickoff, Patrick Gordon’s kick landed Third Quarter untouched and the Bulldogs recovered on the Leemen’s 22LEE – Baker 32 pass from Brown (McGrath kick) yard line. Another pesky personal foul backed them up, but a Fourth Quarter Chenault to Anderson pass moved the ball deep in to Leemen GOOCH – Burton 5 run (Gordon kick) territory. LEE – Brown 8 run (McGrath kick) Wyatt Smith covered the final four yards and Goochland GOOCH – Martin 2 run (Gordon kick) finally breathed a sigh of relief with a Goochland’s first meeting GOOCH – Smith 4 run (Gordon kick) with the Valley powerhouse, and Fowler came away impressed.

Bulldogs

bad thing to say about any other player and is just an allaround great kid. She has worked hard and I think the hole in one is a reflection of her hard work.” The Bulldogs faced off against in a James River District tournament Randolph-Henry and Bluetone on Sept. 17 and finished second, shooting a 176 on the par-36 course at Briery Country Club. Randolph-Henry bested the Bulldogs by 14 strokes. Bluestone shot a 183. However, since the district tournament has no implications on the postseason, Nash said he isn’t worried about his squad. “We had two of our top four out,” he wrote. “So, the performance this week wasn’t too telling.” Next up for the Bulldogs in their banner season is the Conference 34 tournament. The conference includes Brunswick, Nottoway, Amelia, Bluestone, Prince Edward and Greensville County. The Bulldogs are familiar with Bluestone as a longtime district foe, and have faced off against several of the schools they’ll face in conference play this season. First, they played Nottoway and Amelia on Aug 25. Goochland won that match in a close one, winning 201-202-203 over the Cougars and the Raiders, respectively at Amelia Country Club. Goochland also defeated Prince Edward at Longwood Golf Club 178-196 on Aug. 27 and defeated the Eagles and Amelia 169-185-197 at Longwood again on Sept. 3. Those were both nine-hole matches, as most are during the regular season. The Conference 34 tournament, however, will be a longer tournament focused much more on endurance and consistent play. “Kinderton (Country Club) is a very tough course,” Nash wrote, “the toughest by far of the season. We play an 18-hole tournament, which will be a test that I think benefits my steady golfers.” Out of the conference tournament, the top two teams will advance to the 2A East regional tournament. If the team doesn’t advance, individual golfers may if they place high enough. However, that isn’t good enough for Nash. “I honestly expect us to (place in the top two),” he said. “From there, we will see what happens.” Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com or on Twitter @BillyFellin.
