Celebration will honor retired local mail carrier’s dedication to her postal patrons — and blue birds

Residents of the Randolph Square neighborhood will be honoring recently retired mail carrier Rita Schultz during a special celebration on Oct. 4, though one small detail of the event may still need to be pinned down: how, exactly, to refer to Schultz. To call her a mail carrier — or “Mail Ma’am,” as she has been lovingly addressed at times — doesn’t quite do it. Schultz, after all has become known throughout the area and beyond for her knowledge of birds and gardens, and is a trusted resource for many residents. “She is just a beloved figure here,” said Randolph Square resident Tony Pelling, adding that Schultz “doesn’t so much just deliver the mail” as make it her business to chat with folks, offer treats to their dogs, and serve as what he describes as a kind of “community care watchdog.” If Schultz has gained a measure of notoriety for her warmth and community-mindedness over the years, she may be even better known as a staunch defender of the local bluebird population. Bake sale items go on sale at 10 a.m. and stew can be picked up after 1 p.m. The auxiliary uses the money raised during the stew sale to provide for extra items for the firefighters and rescue person-

The cost is $8 a quart again this year. For more information or to purchase tickets, call auxiliary president Ann Casey at (804) 784-5898. Trump candidacy telling By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A word of warning: What I am about to say may break a few hearts and elicit a few angry letters —but I am going to say it anyway. Donald Trump is not going to be president. He is going to be and apparently already is a force to be reckoned with, and he is going to be a thorn in the side of many. And, of course, he is going to be entertaining. But he is not going to win the presidency. Listing the reasons why would take up more space and ink than we have available, but to do so also would overshadow one very interesting point about the fact that someone like Donald Trump (a man who has managed to stay relevant for the past several decades by ingeniously turning himself into walking, talking, oddlycoiffed caricature) has captured the attention —and the steadfast support — of so many. At the very least, the fact that a Donald Trump presidency is being discussed outside the realm of comic strips and late night talk show parodies tells us one simple fact about the American public: A lot of us are very, very angry. To a man, just about every person I know who sincerely supports Trump’s alleged bid for the presidency has become enamored

with him largely due to the billionaire’s somewhat pugnacious attitude toward, well, just about everyone. “He tells it like it is,” they say, pointing to the fact that Trump “doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything or anyone.” In a world that had become uncomfortably politically correct for many, Trump wantonly insults women, minorities and fellow presidential hopefuls, burnishing his self-styled image as a man whose vast wealth has made him untouchable. For people fed-up with the smarmy charm of career politicians, Trump offers just the opposite: He is perhaps the most unapologetically uncharming candidate in recent memory (need proof? During the last debate, he made the typically boorish governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, look almost demure). Trump, his supporters feel, is a brawler — and he’s fighting for them. When it comes to Trump, there is certainly more to be written. But who will be the one to address the rising tide of anger and dissatisfaction among certain segments of our population is anyone’s guess. No, I’m not concerned about Trump sitting in the Oval Office, or about him having access to the Nuclear Codes. I’m concerned about what his “candidacy” says about us.

A closer look at our economy By Del. Lee Ware, R-65 Contributing Columnist

“So, how is Virginia’s economy faring today?” Every day somebody asks me that question. In the wake of the Federal Reserve’s recent decision to maintain an historically unprecedented low level of interest on charged to central banks, and in view of Ware the suggestion

on Friday, by Fed Chairman Janet Yellen, that the Fed will finally raise the rate of interest sometime yet this year, the question takes on even more importance. As chairman of the Finance Committee of the House of Delegates I am privileged to participate in regular meetings among legislative and Administration leaders about the condition of Virginia’s economy. From these meetings there is arising fairly good news for Virginian families, individuals, workers, employers, and taxpayers. For example, in a meeting with

the money committees of both the House and State Senate recently, Governor Terry McAuliffe reported that revenues from all taxes assessed by the Commonwealth for the fiscal year that ended on June 30 had exceeded by over $500 million the expectation of just one year ago. Readers will remember that the General Assembly and Governor had cooperated in reducing state expenditures for the current twoyear budget by roughly $2.4 Billion. So, that revenues increased by see Ware > 7

Letters to the Editor Information presented about candidate for clerk is inaccurate

Concerns raised by recent letter from county commissioner

Dear Editor, Dale Agnew’s opponent for Circuit Court Clerk has gone to great lengths to fabricate figures pertaining to the Clerk’s Office. He ignores revenues to the office from the state and uses incorrect staffing figures from another county in an attempt to make odious comparisons. Clearly, he lacks the most basic understanding of the workings of this office and its relationship to state and county government. The fact is, the county contributed $303,886 of local tax dollars to the Clerk’s budget. That budget was approved and agreed to by the Board of Supervisors in a public setting. Under Dale’s leadership, the Clerk’s Office returned $548,022 in revenue to Goochland County last fiscal year for a net gain to the County of $244,136. My vote is for Dale. She is a very professional and capable Clerk. There is no place in the Clerk’s Office for her opponent’s fuzzy math. Thomas B. Munson Crozier

Dear Editor, I would like to address this to current Commissioner of Revenue. In reference to your article in the Gazette dated Sept. 24, 2015, let me first say “Thank You” for your 34-plus years of service and dedication to Goochland County, and I wish you a well-deserved, joyful retirement. With all due respect, Commissioner Bryant, you made some comments in the September 24th edition of the Gazette that I feel compelled to address: First, you mentioned in the article that you had heard of Buddy Bishop’s Facebook page conjecturing that you have not provided sufficient customer service as Commissioner. If you will please look at his Facebook page (www. facebook.com/votebuddybishop see the August 30th post) and website (www.buddybishop.com), you will see this is not accurate. In fact, at several speaking engagements, and most recently at the NAACP debate on September 24th, Buddy commended the Commissioner’s office

for their customer service and that he plans to continue, expand and build on. You also mentioned that there have been statements made that the Commissioner’s office does not take credit cards for payment. These statements might have been made, but not by Buddy Bishop. To be specific, Buddy’s technical comments have been examples about interacting with the County in a modern fashion. Such as, utilizing quick and easy billing and digital payment options via a smart phone. Another example would be filling out forms directly online in lieu of downloading PDF files, printing them off, manually filling them out and mailing them in. One of Buddy’s goals is to improve the ability to work collaboratively across all levels of local government, working together “gets things done”. Finally, you stated that you heard it has been inferred that the Commissioner’s office is not in the 21st Century with computer technology. As we all know, Technology moves at an alarming rate and is continuously upgrading and changing. With 20 years of experience see Letters > 8

Ware continued from >6 about a fifth of that amount offered a modestly encouraging assessment of private economic activity across the Commonwealth. More recently, the president of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, Jeffrey Lacker, likewise sounded an upbeat note on the economy. This came during his remarks to some 300 business leaders assembled by the Richmond Retail Merchants Association. Mr. Lacker underscored his analysis by casting a vote later in September to raise interest rates for the first time in six years. Defending that view, Mr.

Lacker reported that consumer spending (which represents two-thirds of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product, or GDP) has risen, business investment has advanced, and housing starts continue a steady, if unspectacular rise – altogether registering what he described as “significant progress in the nation’s economy. While both these reports contain solid and even encouraging economic news, it is important to add that, in both cases, the positive prognoses were accompanied by words of caution. For example, with regard to interest rates controlled by the Federal Reserve, Mr. Lacker’s was the sole dissenting vote in the Federal Open Market’s

Committee last week. In other words, his peers all voted to continue low interest rates in the belief that the economy requires continued stimulus. Likewise, in speaking after the governor, Ric Brown, the Commonwealth’s Secretary of Finance, acknowledged under questioning that most of Virginia’s budget “surplus must be dedicated to replenishing our Rainy Day Fund. That is a necessary and prudent hedge because the Rainy Day Fund has been invaluable in enabling Virginia to navigate a series of recessions. In mid-November, I will be part of two important meetings about the economy and its implication for the budget of our state government. First

will be the annual two-day retreat in northern Virginia of the House committee on Appropriations, together with members of the Finance committee that I chair. Later in November, I will join a number of Virginia’s leading business officials and senior General Assembly money committee members in offering our estimates regarding the state of the economy. This group is the Governor’s Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates (GACRE). Our collective reflections will be considered when the governor, Secretary Brown and others prepare their proposed biennial budget. The budget for 2016-2018 will be the first crafted by

the McAuliffe administration. The governor will present his proposal at the always-highly anticipated meeting of the money committees of both the House and State Senate on Dec. 17. Between that meeting and the convening of the General Assembly of 2016 on Jan. 13, no doubt a great deal more economic activity will require the careful review of those of us challenged with stewarding the resources provided by taxpayers for the proper functioning of our state government. Del. Lee Ware represents the 65th House District, which includes western Goochland, eastern Fluvanna, all of Powhatan and western Chesterfield.

Ever wondered what it might be like to live in a relative time of peace? All are invited to travel back to the far, far distant past and see how Bonnye Matthews, award-winning author of the “Winds of Change “novel series describes how life might have been just after the eruption of a super-volcano, Mount Toba in Sumatra in 75,000 B.C. This event is free, and will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Grace Episcopal’s Parish House at 2955 River Road West in Goochland. Matthews’ series focuses on the peopling of the Americas prior to the Ice

Age. Through five years of exhaustive research, Matthews has rewritten what scientists thought they knew about early man and how the Americas were populated. Her premise is that great events not only affect the Earth but also have an effect on living things. The eruption of Mt. Toba, called Baambas in the novels, sets off a time of peace as people have to deal with a dramatically changed environment and the possibility of a reduced human population level on Earth. In Matthews’ view, the part of the Ice Age from the mid-20,000 B.C. to 10,000 B.C. ushered in a time of war among people on earth that continues to the

present, as it constricted environments and compacted populations of people. The film also takes viewers into the tectonic nature of the planet, including how subduction zones, tsunamis and earthquakes work in relation to the land in the novel. The film gives an overview of the ancients — Neanderthals, Cromagnons, Denisovans and Homo Erectus — and offers a paradigm shift in how it’s possible to view Homo Sapiens today, based on current genetic findings. Matthews will answer questions after the film, and books and DVDs will be available for any who wish to add them to their library.

ly, and it is my understanding that Goochland will soon begin doing just that with a new integrated financial management system being brought online in the next year or so. Buddy’s experience and expertise will greatly benefit being in step with this and thus provide better and faster service from the Commissioner of Revenue, other county offices the commissioner’s office interacts with and to the people they serve. Emotions and passions run very high during opposed campaigns, each candidate is vying for a single

position and their supporters are working diligently to get them elected. Unfortunately, all too often, through hearsay or conjecture, misinformation is disseminated, creating unnecessary hard feelings and conflicts, but by stating facts, the truth is revealed and the campaign can proceed with some amount of civility and integrity. NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County

October 1, 2015

www.goochlandgazette.com

Ask Fern

Why do causes leaves to change color in the fall?

Will decor decision tear couple apart?

Dear Reader, What is it they say about one’s spouse’s choices? Never balk for you are one of them! That said, finding common ground between ruffles

and camouflage could surely present its challenges. Fo r t u n a te l y, varying tastes merged in the right way can also evolve into a perfectly lovely and interesting design. I always persuade couples to talk over their ideas, pointing out that this collaboration will actually allow them the best of both worlds. If they are willing to lay out what s most important to each, they are off to a good start! Let’s say one person wants an energized atmosphere and the other wants a more calming palette. Neutral colors such as smoky blues, soft grays, bright whites, rich beiges and light parchment hues complement one another and are great choices for walls, window treatments and bedding. These colors also work well with other colors that each of you may delight throwing into the mix. Of these, consider choosing solid, textured fabrics

that don t sway too far feminine or masculine. Introducing patterns such as a geometric or chevron and dotting them around the room on pillows, a bed skirt, upholstered bench or ottoman can punctuate just enough energy to the space without taking over the design. Going with leather on a chair or headboard is also a neutral approach, keeping style in check as well as allowing for one who may prefer less fabric and a slightly bolder look. Remember, there is more to agree on than just colors and fabrics. Price is usually a factor so establish a mutually agreeable budget and prioritize early on. Later, as you start layering on, keep in mind that accessories such as wall art are very personal selections. If you cannot agree on a particular artist or art style, consider enlarging mutually favorite black and white photographs of the two of you and/or family members, pets, landscapes or waterscapes you ve visited together. Teaming up to place these photos in oversized, simple,

Donna Cottingham James River Master Naturalist

contemporary frames and arrange them on the wall is a fun way to endear the room to both of you. Mirrors are neutral elements, whether you choose a grouping for the wall or one large floor mirror to bring in more function. When selecting lighting, if you cannot agree on finishes such as silver or gold/ wood or ceramic, there is always glass which is not only versatile and reflective but elegant and neutral. Choosing furniture with clean lines is a most agreeable option as well. As you can see, even with the most diverse tastes, there are so many ways to meet in the middle. I hope I have helped you on your way to creating a wonderful bedroom that will be dynamic and relaxing enough for both of you to love and enjoy! Mrs. Smith-Cole is a wife, mother (of three), interior designer and active member in the Goochland Woman’s Club. Have a question for Fern? Send it to editor@goochlandgazette. com.

Dear Fern, I am stuck in a home decorating conundrum that I cannot seem to find a way through. My husband and I both agree that our shabby, dated master bedroom is in serious need of redecorating—but that is about the only thing we can agree on. Though he usually trusts my design eye, it seems every swatch of fabric or carpet sample I bring him he dismisses as “too girly.” In turn, when he picks out photos of rooms that he likes, they all remind me of a hunting lodge—not my favorite look at all. Fern, do you have any suggestions to help us find a color palette and style that is not too feminine or masculine?

Big second half ensures happy Homecoming for the Bulldogs By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

And, they’re off. Goochland and Randolph Henry were fueled and ready for blastoff as the two teams met in a James River District matchup last week at GHS. Scott Carter picked up the opening kickoff and galloped 80 yards for a score with seconds off the clock, and the Bulldogs led 7-0 before the Statesmen touched the ball. It also didn’t take University of Virginia commit Joseph Reed long to confirm his status as he rumbled 80 yards from scrimmage on the Statesman’s first offensive play, making it 7-6 as the extra point failed. “After Scott ran the opening kickoff back, we came out a little flat and you can’t

do that against a guy like Reed,” coach Joe Fowler said after the win. “It didn’t take long for Joe to wake us up after that 80yard run.” Cordell Mattox gathered in a 25-yard Reid Chenault pass for the next score, giving the Bulldogs a 14-6 advantage, still early in the game. Marcus Burton excited the homecoming crowd on the next possession as he see Bulldogs > 13

Madelyn Ott (21) can not only get the kills on the outside for Goochland, but her size allows her to be a threat on the middle block as well, seen here with teammate Brenda Moore (1) against Collegiate on Sept. 21.

Ott brings the heat for Bulldogs Outside hitter is committed to D1 school By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

When Goochland’s Madelyn Ott goes up for a kill, you know who hit the ball when you hear the sound. Ott’s swing from the outside is powerful, driving through the ball, and, more often than not, landing on the court on the opposing side. Point, Goochland. Ott said her journey to the volleyball court was through the softball diamond, which she said she tried but it wasn’t for her. “I was always tall, so I thought (volleyball) would be something fun to try,” she said. “I had played soccer, basketball, softball, all these different sports. And, I fell in love with it.” That love affair led to volleyball quickly becoming what she described as her “favorite thing to do.” “I play year-round,” she said.“I couldn’t imagine doing anything else besides vol-

leyball.” Like many volleyball players in the Richmond area, Ott plays travel volleyball. Her team at U-Turn has played across the country, in places such as Las Vegas, Indianapolis and Florida, just to name a few. Ott said the competition level is high and intense during travel volleyball games, something she said she enjoys very much. The commitment to the game and her skills landed her an opportunity to play at the Division 1 level at Georgia State, after the program left their card with her coach at a tournament. Initially, Ott said she was “iffy” about going to Georgia State, which is a city school, because of her country upbringing. When she visited, that mindset totally changed. “Georgia State gave my coach their card (at a tournament) and I called them when I got back in town. And, they talked to me for a really long time,” she said. “I went down there with an open mind, and I fell in love. It’s such a family environment there, it’s awesome.” While her college career is set, Ott is

currently a key cornerstone in the Bulldogs attack that has been rolling on opponents this season, including nine kills against Bluestone on Sept. 24, 10 kills against Central Lunenburg on Sept. 22 and 10 kills against Collegiate on Sept. 21. “She has a very important role,” Goochland coach Jennifer Erixon said. “Obviously, we feed her the ball a lot. She’s a big person in the middle and can get up pretty high on her blocks. She’s a good server, and has been working on her defense this year. She’s a strong part of the team. I don’t think we’d be as successful without her.” The Bulldogs are undefeated thus far this season, and, while the Quad Rivers Conference tournament is still “down the road,” they look to be the early favorites to make it to regional and perhaps state play. “This season is going really well,” Ott said. “We just all have the same mentality this year, to get out there and do our best.” That mentality might just mean some more dominant sets for Goochland with Ott continuing to swing on the outside this season.

rumbled 42 yards for his first score of the evening. But Reed again found a way to shred the Bulldog offense and scored midway through the second quarter and converted a two-point conversion for good measure. Goochland led 21-14. Daric Clarke scored from a yard out and the Bulldog lead seemed comfortable. Goochland quickly realized no lead is safe when Reed is at the opposing controls, a correct assumption. After completing a touchdown throw to Dujour Davis and a consecutive two-point conversion, the Statesmen were close at 28-22. With six seconds to go in the half, Reed swept right for six yards and the Statesmen tied the score, 28-28 at halftime. Clarke got his second score on a five-yard run as the third quarter ended and gave the Bulldogs a lead they would not relinquish, 34-28. Burton also got an encore score when he scampered 28 yards for a score and Akai Timberlake snared a Chenault pass for the two-point conversion. Wyatt Smith capped the offensive show for the Bulldogs with a one-yard run and Sullivan Young converted for

13

the 49-28 final. “We threw the ball the first half but the run game was there the second half and that’s more consistent for us and safer,” Fowler said. “We stayed calm the second half and didn’t make mistakes and were able to grind it out.” It was a second half performance for the Bulldogs that produced 21 unanswered points, but it was Reed who lived up to the hype with 172 yards on 23 carries and was 10 for 20 passing for 94 yards and a touchdown. “He’s an electrifying football player who’s going to do great things in Charlottesville,” Fowler said. “We’re glad he’s headed that way and won’t be in Charlotte Courthouse any more.” Bulldog running back Calvin Martin finished the evening with 111 yards. “It’s the second week in a row Calvin has really stepped up for us, and Daric Clarke also played really well for us tonight.” Clarke, Burton, Martin and Smith combined for 339 yards on the ground for the Bulldogs. Fowler said this year’s squad is a work in progress and each week he notes improvement. “We are slowly but surely getting to where we need to be. We have a long way to go, but we are making progress.” The Bulldogs travel to Prince Edward this week.

Question

Fall Leaves continued from >11 photosynthesis. Eventually trees need a rest from all that work converting light to energy. And besides, tender green leaves can’t handle damaging frost and freezing temperatures of winter. Winter dormancy is the time for trees to rest up and rely on stored energy, and fall is the time to prepare for the cold and freezing weather ahead. Leaves contain several color pigments all summer long, but the green chlorophyll pigment is the only one visible because it is involved in photosynthesis. Therefore it masks the other colors, or pigments, while the tree is in

its energy production process. You see only the green coloration in summer. Shorter days of sunlight and cooler nights of fall cue the trees to begin preparation for winter. This means it is time to shut down the photosynthesis process, so suddenly the need for green chlorophyll has ended. Now that the production of the green chlorophyll pigment is over, it finally allows the red and yellow pigments that were there all along to become visible. Carotenoid pigments (think carrot) are responsible for the orange and yellow leaf colors that take center stage after green chlorophyll pigments cease. They are joined by anthocyanin pigments, responsible for the red and pur-

www.goochlandgazette.com ple leaf colors you see. (They also give the red color to apples.) After the brilliant color change process is complete and the colorful background pigments overtake the green, a final chemical reaction produces cells to seal off the connection between the leaf stem and the tree, like a scab, which then forces the leaf to fall off. Finally, energy production is put on hold and the tree can rest safely in dormancy and withstand freezing temperatures. But come spring, sunlight and rising temperatures will signal the trees that it is time to awaken and ramp up the food and energy production once again for another green, shady summer.
