Previously, she taught science at Robious Middle School, with five years of experience in the Center Based Gifted Program. Moore’s passion for environmental issues has been a driving force for the development of the Prothonotary Warbler Interactive Study in conjunction with Virginia Commonwealth University and the Chesapeake Bay

They work to discover solutions based on practical application processes and fieldwork. Moore’s previous awards include the Thomas Jefferson Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Natural Science Education; Air Force Association Teacher of the Year – Richmond Region; and Outstanding Gifted Teacher, Chesterfield County and the State of Virginia. Receiving over $15,000 in grants, her favorite has been the Fund for Teachers grant, which allowed her to travel to New Zealand to study environmental sustainability.

Former District 4 Planning Commissioner Joe Andrews is congratulated by Board of Supervisors Chair Susan Lascolette after being honored by the board for his service.
Goochland boards honor former District 4 Planning Commissioner By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Both the Goochland County Board of Supervisors and the county Planning Commission recently honored departing District 4 Planning Commissioner Joe Andrews for his service and dedication to the county. Andrews, who served on the Planning Commission from May 2011 until last month, and served as chairman from April of 2014 to April of this year, was presented with resolutions of recognition from both boards. The resolution from the Board praised Andrews as “an outstanding steward of the County, respecting the County’s rural nature by balancing growth and development.”
“Joe brought a sense of calm, fair, and thoughtful analysis to the planning commission process that made for a balanced review of all projects,” District 4 supervisor Bob Minnick said. “His leadership on the comprehensive plan was phenomenal and I am grateful for his expertise and guidance. “ In addition to his work on the Planning Commission, Andrews served on the Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Citizen Transportation Advisory Committee from February 2003 to April 2008, and the Metropolitan Planning Organization from April 2008 until May 2012. He also played a key role in the successful merger of Goochland Fellowship and Family Services and the Goochland Free Clinic, and would go on to serve in a number of key leadership roles for the organization.

In praise of newspapers By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A
s this week marks the 75th anniversary of National Newspaper Week (Oct. 4 -10), I couldn’t help but share a few of my own thoughts on the subject. A word of warning: I am not presenting myself as an unbiased source. Not even close. Because I love newspapers. I love newspapers, I suppose, in the way that someone who has spent the entirety of their

I love the care that goes into producing them, and the role they play in bringing communities together and keeping readers informed. So many life events — from births to weddings to deaths — are commemorated in newspapers, and rare is the household that doesn’t have a stash of clip-

pings tucked away somewhere. Like so many unrepentant lovers of paper and ink — the good old-fashioned “fish-wrap,” if you will — I have always enjoyed how reading a newspaper can be either a solitary or communal pursuit, depending on a reader’s preference. Two people sharing a paper, each delving into separate sections and each lost in their own small world, can suddenly find themselves engaged in deep conversation or raucous debate, depending on the contents of the particular edition they hold. Nothing, after all, can spark a good conversation like a newspaper article, served up to the reader with the facts neatly laid out and the opinions theirs to provide. Newspapers as we know them today have been around for centuries, and have seen many changes. But what they strive to provide — a carefully examined and vetted look at the events that shape our lives — has remained the same. As the editor of The Goochland Gazette, I’d like to thank all of our wonderful readers for continuing to make us a part of your daily lives, and for allowing us to share your community news with you each week. It is an honor to do so, and we look forward to many more editions to come.

Letters to the Editor Residents should know facts about biosolids Dear Editor: I have sixteen years of sludge experience and have read, with great interest, several articles in your paper describing the opponents’ and proponents’ views on toxic pollutants, or “biosolids.” What seems to be lacking in these views are the facts and a commonsense approach. All parties agree, undisputed, that sewage waste sludges are toxic pollutants. Hence the need for permits by DEQ. Commonsense dictates that applying toxic pollutants requires extreme care, full knowledge of content, caution of future environmental consequences and effects on neighboring community residents’ health, safety and welfare. However, in Virginia, DEQ
NCR, VDH and the waste industry stakeholders have aligned to circumvent the rights of the citizens of the Commonwealth and to use Virginia as a toxic pollution dumping ground. The volume and dump sites permitted are evidence. Whereas much toxic sludge information is quoted and circulated by all, one must understand the difference between studies with a predetermined “paid” outcome and those conclusive facts from independent studies by independent scholars, i.e , Cornell. William & Mary, Duke, NC State, UNC and many others. A recent November 2007 study for the VA General Assembly states pros, cons and unknowns throughout the report. However, it does state that adverse risks abound to human, wildlife and the environment from the toxic sludges’ constituents such
as chemical reactions (arsenic in drinking water is an established cause of skin cancer”), volatile emissions and odorants; pharmaceuticals; pathogens; Helminthes Worms (hook, round, tape, whip, etc.) and vectors (flies and other vectors have been detected on lands where biosolids were applied). The common agreement between many scientists is that chemical reactions, disease effects, metals, drug effects, etc., in toxic sludges, are not fully studied and need to be addressed before the disposal and exposure of toxic pollutants to human and environment. What is fully known is that any vegetation, grown in toxic pollution (biosolids), due to plant uptake of chemical pathogen, metal, etc., and ingested by human, fish, bird, soil see Letter > 7
Thursday
continued from >6 worm or animal does have negative impacts on health. Also known, are the negative effects on the environment and the eventual degradation of soil. Common sense dictates that no research, suppressed studies on toxic sewage pollutants or refusal to conduct community health surveys will allow state departments, sludge generators, sludge dumpers and those receiving toxic pollution as so called “free fertilizer” to continue their sales pitch that forcedapplications of toxic sludges are “safe.” It is simple business economics that toxic sludge generators have to dispose of the sludges away from their communities; haulers/dumpers are paid to haul toxic pollutants away from the generating sites and will increase their profits when finding an unconcerned landowner who
will allow the land to be used as a toxic pollutant dumping site for free. Rural residents have legitimate concerns based on the facts as proven by the air being saturated with foul toxic pollutant particulars (chemical and diseased dust/aerosols), water contamination due to runoff (ocean/bay dumping now prohibited), crop contamination (Whole Foods refuses to accept any crops grown in toxic biosolids and many other food stores are following suit) and subjecting wildlife to exposure while roaming the counties and spreading the toxicants. There are many areas available for toxic pollution disposal, with minimum harmful effects, but not in communities with children, elderly and the immunecompromised. A list can be furnished. Respectfully, C.W. Williams Henrico

Richmond Symphony to perform at Powhatan High School Oct. 10 By Laura McFarland News Editor
Owned and Operated by Professional Engineers since 1993
POWHATAN – The Richard Symphony will be making sweet music to benefit local students when it performs this weekend at Powhatan High School. The symphony will perform its concert, “Music From Around the World,” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the high school, 1800 Judes Ferry Road. The concert represents a partnership between the school district, the symphony and The Rotary Club of Powhatan, which is sponsoring the event. The program will be a professional concert of very
accessible music that people will recognize, Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent, said. Keitaro Harada will be the conductor for the performance. The program for the evening includes music by Giuseppe Verdi, Felix Mendelssohn, Jean Sibelius, and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. “We wanted something that would spotlight different types of classical music but also be something people would appreciate,” Jones said. “The concert is going to be just over an hour long. It is going to be a great length to hear some excellent music but isn’t going to be as long as some people may have experienced with the symphony before.”
Tickets are $25 for general admission or $50 for a VIP ticket. The VIP ticket includes reserved seating, parking and a pre-concert reception at 6 p.m. The reception will also feature music from the Powhatan High School Jazz Band. The concert is a wonderful opportunity to bring something new and exciting to Powhatan County, Brenda Fulcher, president of The Rotary Club of Powhatan, said. Earlier this year, it came to the club’s attention that the symphony already had a similar program with a Rotary Club in Goochland County see Concert > 9

Goochland County Public Schools (GCPS) has been announced as the winner of the 2015 Flashlight Awards by the Data Quality Campaign, a national education advocacy group based in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes GCPS for its use of data to answer questions, empower educators, and transparently communicate with parents and the public. “We are pleased to honor Goochland County Public Schools for creating a culture in which education data are used as a tool to empower parents and educators,” Aimee Rogstad Guidera, president and CEO of the Data Quality Campaign said. “Goochland leaders and teachers

are now using data to help make the best decisions possible in the greatest interest of each student.” Guidera praised the school system for its three-tier approach to measuring student progress — student academic growth, social-emotional measures, and school climate—a system created in collaboration with parents, school leaders, and the community. District leaders rolled out their datadriven initiative slowly, to give teachers an opportunity to reflect, respond, and ask questions. They also specifically emphasized that data would be used as a “flashlight and not a hammer” to help teachers improve their impact on students success.
“Our culture is one of trust,” said GCPS superintendent Dr. James F. Lane. “We’re going to check our egos at the door and use this data to maximize the potential of every student. It’s a totally different conversation when you can peel away to a deeper level of detail, to help a parent really understand what their child needs to work on, as opposed to that they just need help in general.” Today, Goochland teachers are better equipped to individualize instruction for students, driving their continued success and resulting in high levels of academic success for students. GCPS is 1 of 22 school divisions — out of the 132 in Virginia—to have 100 percent of schools reaching full state accreditation.

Decorated veterans shared stories with JROTC cadets By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Students in Goochland High School’s Marine Corp Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (MCJROTC) were treated to a very special presentation on Sept. 30 when the school welcomed Ret. Col. Tony Nadal and Ret. Col. John Herren, both of whom generously gave of their time to share their stories and insights with the young cadets. Graduates of West Point
Concert continued from >8 that had been running successfully for a few years, she said. The Powhatan group decided them sponsoring a concert here would be a great cultural opportunity for people in the county.
and decorated Vietnam veterans, both Nadal and Herrin played key roles in the Battle of Ia Drang, the battle depicted in 2002 film “We Were Soldiers.” Goochland High School principal Mike Newman said he was excited to have Nadal and Herren share their experiences. “The focus of both men was on leadership and being ready to lead when challenges present themselves,” Newman said. “It is my hope that students will remember the men’s
service and their perspective about leadership, friendship, and commitment.” Organized by Goochland resident Retired Brig. Gen. Tom Carpenter, the program was one he hoped would inspire the young men and women in the MCJROTC program. “If these 112 cadets can commit themselves to such a challenging program, and I am able to put together something like this for them, I am very happy to be able to do that,” Carpenter said.
“Most people in Powhatan don’t go downtown to listen to the Richmond Symphony because it is a ways to go and they just don’t think about it. For the Richmond Symphony to agree to come out and agree to a performance, I think that is a great thing,” she said. For people who cannot come but who still want to
help, many tickets have been purchased and then donated back to the school to give to students, Jones said. Tickets can be purchased online at www.powhatanrotary.org, at Powhatan High School during normal business hours or on the night of the event if there are any tickets left.

Vermicompost: The science of worm composting By Jane McKinley Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardener
This past summer I performed an experiment. Wanting to break away from my habit of planting a single variety of annuals in my favorite flower bed, I decided to add a variety of plants to produce an array of happy, bright colors. I planted yellow and pink gerbera daisies, ornamental peppers, cascading petunias, alyssum, dianthus and celosia. The results were stunning! But this wasn’t the experiment. What I fed the plants was the key to my success – a weekly application of compost tea produced from my worm bin. The positive results of this experiment were proof that vermicompost contributes to healthy plants that boast continuous blooms throughout the season. Although not yet a “household” term, increasingly people are becoming familiar with the concept of vermicomposting. Many serious gardeners are learning how to use earthworms to convert organic materials into a beneficial soil amendment. Vermicompost, a combination of earthworm castings (feces) and partially decomposed bedding and food scraps, is an organic soil amendment that adds nitrogen, phosphorus,
potassium, calcium and magnesium to the soil in a form readily taken up by plants. It also has good moisture-holding capacity and adds plant growth hormones to the soil. In addition to the nutritional attributes, vermicomposting reduces garbage and requires minimal space and maintenance. Vermicomposting allows composting year-round, even in winter when other forms of composting are unavailable. And, once established, it even produces surplus worms for the family fisherman! So, how do you get started? You will need a container, bedding, water, earthworms and food scraps. The container can be a simple plastic tub and lid or a commercially purchased worm bin. If using a plastic tub, drill multiple 1/8-inch holes around the upper sides under the lid line. Also, drill six ¼-inch holes evenly disbursed along the bottom for drainage. Next, prepare the bedding comprised of shredded newspaper (no colored ink) or office paper, cardboard, coir (coconut pith fiber), decaying leaves or a combination of these materials. Soak the material in water for up to 10 minutes, then wring it out so that no more drops remain. Fluff the damp bedding and add a handful of garden soil to introduce micro-organisms to help with the worm digestion.
Paid Political Advertisement
Once the bedding has been added, avoid stirring it. Additional bedding and food should be applied as a top layer. Spritz the contents periodically to keep it moist. Never pour water into the bin. It is now time to add the worms and food. Red Wigglers (Eisenia fetida) are recommended because they have a tendency to travel up to the top instead of burying down into the bedding. A source of both worms and commercially purchased bins can easily be found on the Internet. Do not get worms from a bait shop or from your own yard. If purchasing worms in the summer, be careful to have them shipped in a manner to protect them from the heat of a delivery truck. Food scraps should consist of non-meat foods such as vegetables, fruits, egg shells, tea bags and coffee grounds. Do not add bones, fish, citrus, onions, oily foods, fat, tobacco or salty foods. One pound of worms will consume up to two pounds of food scraps per week during the summer months. Avoid adding more if there is still food present in the bin. The bin will be ready for harvesting in four to six months. This can be done through vertical, sideways or light separation. Vertical separation is used with a commercial bin and is the easiest. For this method, simply add a new bin layer and
Paid Political Advertisement
allow a couple of weeks for the worms to migrate to the top. Then, remove the lower layer and let it dry out, removing any remaining worms by hand. If you are using a “homemade” bin, you can use either sideways or light separation. In sideways, feed one side of the bin only, allowing the worms to migrate to that side. Then, harvest from the other side. In light separation, empty the contents onto a plastic sheet in sunlight. The worms will travel down to avoid the sun, allowing you to harvest the top layer. Vermicompost can either be added to the soil as a top dressing (covered by mulch) or prepared as a compost tea. To prepare the tea, mix two tablespoons of vermicompost to one quart of water. Allow it to brew for one day, mixing occasionally, and use it within 24 hours. The tea can be used to water the plants or can be sprayed on the leaves, avoiding any edible parts of the plant. Now that you know how easy and beneficial it is, I encourage you to break from the traditional chemical based fertilizers and try your hand at worm farming! Bulldogs qualify for 2A East regional By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

oochland golf’s banner season continues on. The Bulldogs competed in the Quad Rivers Conference tournament on Sept. 28 and came away regional qualifiers, finishing second of the six competing teams, securing a spot in the 2A East tournament. “It feels awesome to have qualified for regional play,” Goochland coach AJ Nash said. “The team really stepped up their work ethic this year and in the offseason, and it has shown through.” Goochland shot a 359 as a team, finishing eight strokes behind conference champion Greensville. Davis Paone was the low score for the Bulldogs, shooting an 11-over 82. Peyton Butts shot a 16-over 87, J.M. Donaldson shot a 21-over 92 and Anthony Nemetz was
fourth with a 27-over 98. Paone’s 82 was the third best score individually, behind conference medalist Henry Lutz of Prince Edward, who shot a 5-over 76 and Cassandra Robinson of Greensville, who had a 9-over 80. Butts was fifth overall with his 87, four strokes behind fourth place Austin Ligon of Greensville. Both Paone and Butts were named to the all-conference team. As long as there is no additional rain that has plagued the area over the past week, the 2A East Regional tournament was scheduled for Oct. 6 at Kiskiack Golf Course in Williamsburg. If the course is not deemed playable or there is more rain in the Williamsburg area, the tournament would be moved to Oct. 8 at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club in Front Royal. Not only has the weather
wreaked havoc on the planning and execution of the conference and regional tournaments, but also with preparing for postseason play. “Our preparation for the regional tournament has not been what I want it to be, but I think our concentrated practice so far this season has prepared us well for the tournament,” Nash said. “We have done quite a bit with playing in the rain, keeping dry, and practicing in the rain. We are no strangers to wet conditions.” Conference 33 is sending Maggie Walker and Bruton to the 2A East regional tournament. Central-Woodstock and Clarke County are the representatives from Conference 35. Robert E. Lee, which has won three Conference 36 titles in a row, as well as East Rockingham will also be competing against Goochland. Nash knows that the competition will be much tougher
on the regional level and that his team will have to bring their A-game to the course if they want to advance to the Group 2A state tournament. “We have to have four out of our top six players all have very good days,” he said. “To make it to states, we will probably need Davis and Peyton in the 70s, J.M. in the 80s and a fourth score in the low 90s or even high 80s. If I could guess, we’ll need to be somewhere in the 325 to 335 range to qualify for the state tournament.” Goochland will need to have consistent play and keep the ball in play off the tee, according to Nash, to have success in the regional tournament. “Having one or two putts on the green is (another) key point for our team,” he said. “That is certainly possible, but everyone has to play well and it will truly need to be a team effort.”
uring a press conference on Sept. 30, Tony Stewart said that there was a real chance that this season of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series would have been his last. But, he decided to go for one more season. Why? “The reason that we decided to run through next year is 100-percent because of the fans that have supported us,” he said. “I have been able to follow what (Gordon) has done this year and see what it has meant to the fans and what it meant to them to have one last chance to watch him.” Those fans will have one last shot to see “Smoke” before he hangs up his helmet in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2016. He will stay on with Stewart-Haas Racing as an owner, among his many other responsibilities such as owner of Eldora Speedway, and announced Clint Bowyer will take over the No. 14 car in 2017. “The great thing is, I think a lot of athletes and professionals get to this point and they don’t know what they’re going to do with the rest of their lives,” he said. “I’ve got everything lined up. It’s basically everything I’m doing now, just not driving a Cup car.” Stewart has won in everything he’s ever driven and NASCAR was no exception. He’s a three-time Sprint Cup Champion, most recently in 2011 with one of the most

exciting and drama-filled runs to the title, eventually beating out Carl Edwards on a tiebreaker in Homestead. He’s also the only driver so far to have won titles in both IndyCar and NASCAR. “It’s neat to be the first guy to do it, but I wouldn’t venture to say that I’ll be the last,” he said. He’s won 48 races in his career, the first of which came in 1999 at Richmond International Raceway with Joe Gibbs Racing. Stewart drove for Gibbs in the No. 20 Home Depot car and won two Sprint Cup titles with the team before joining Gene Haas and forming Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009. At the time, it was a two-car operation, with Stewart and Ryan Newman and brought Stewart back under the Chevrolet banner. Now, it is a four-car team with Stewart, reigning Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick, Danica Patrick and Kurt Busch. “It’s been a quick seven years,” Haas said. “It was a see Stewart> 13

Stewart continued from >13 heck of a step for Tony to do something like that, to leave the security of his team, being a championships driver and starting with to everybody looked like a start up team. Without Tony we never would have turned into the super team that we are now winning two championships.” Bowyer will come into the SHR fold in 2017, with a stop at HScott Motorsports in between. He brings eight career wins to the team, along with 58 career top-fives and 163 top-10s. The opportunity for Bowyer to take over Stewart’s seat came when Michael Waltrip Racing, Bowyer’s current team, announced it would fold at the end of the 2015 season and Bowyer was free to make arrangements for his future. “You know, you thought you were set, you thought you were good, then all of a sudden you’re not, then all of a sudden that led to a door opening in one of the biggest powerhouses in the sport,” he said. “It’s just all about the people, it’s all about the culture for me and I think the fit factor couldn’t be any better.”
The last two seasons have certainly put a toll on Stewart. He broke his leg in a sprint car accident in 2013, and was involved in Kevin Ward Jr.’s death in 2014 when Stewart’s car hit Ward after Ward walked on the track from his car following an on-track incident. Stewart said that Ward’s death and his leg injury had “zero percent” influence on the retirement decision. “Not one percent of it has had anything to do with it,” he said. “I mean this is strictly what I want to do, and my leg feels fine. The tragedy, nothing is going to change that. It happened, but it’s not going to direct the rest of my life. I’m going to go race when I want to go race, but as far as the Cup Series, it had no bearing on that.” He also said that the 2016 season will not just be a coast to the finish line. “I have two more big wins I want to get and that’s the Daytona 500 and the Southern 500,” he said. “I wouldn’t mind adding another championship to that either. It all just came about with opportunities at the right time, and I think this was one of those as well. We’re going to enjoy this, we’re going to have a lot of fun.”

The great Yogi Berra (front) rides around Yankee Stadium on Old Timers’ Day on June 22, 2014.
T
By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
he day was June 22, 2014. My girlfriend (who is now my wife), my parents and I were in the outfield bleachers of Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. It was a hot, humid summer day in New York as we settled into our seats among fellow fans wearing the pinstripes and the interlocking NY. It was a dual occasion for my family. My dad had yet to attend a game at the new Yankee Stadium, and the trip was a birthday gift to him from my mom. This also was Old Timers’ Day, and, as someone enamored with the history of baseball, America and the New York Yankees, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to see some of the greats of Yankees lore on the field. Nor could my dad, as he would often call his father, another in the line of Yankees fans in my family, about who was on the field at Old Timers’
Day and recanting stories about watching them back in the day. The ceremony was a roll call of Yankee greats that day: Bucky Dent, Hideki Matsui, Whitey Ford, Paul O’Neill, David Cone and Goose Gossage, who got a plaque in Monument Park that day, just to name a few. And, there was Yogi Berra. He was riding around in the back of a golf cart when we saw him as he circled the warning track, Ford with him. He waved to all the fans, a smile on his face that was clear as day even though we were a few rows up from the wall. That was as close as I ever got to meeting Yogi Berra, and I count myself lucky to have gotten near, be around his aura, and witness him in person. Yogi Berra passed away on Sept. 22 at the age of 90. I saw the news and my heart was instantly sad. He was a national treasure, spawning many phrases such as “It ain’t over till it’s over” or “When
you come to a fork in the road, take it.” While some of his “Yogisms” were debated about whether he ever said them, what modern-day athlete can we point to that has said things even remotely close to what Yogi said? I doubt we’ll ever see one like him again. Then, there are his on-field accomplishments, which are nothing short of incredible. He was a 15-time All-Star, 14-time pennant winner, a 10-time World Series champion, threetime MVP and caught 148 consecutive games at catcher without an error, according to his plaque in Cooperstown. He also caught Don Larsen’s perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, the only perfect game in postseason baseball history. Again, I doubt we’ll ever see anything like what Berra accomplished again. In the Yankees Museum at the stadium, the perfect game is depicted in a case of base-
balls, one signed by every player who has ever played for the Yankees. At one end, a statue of Larsen’s delivery and the case ends at a statue of Berra, crouched behind the plate. He also was a veteran, serving in the Navy during World War II. He was a husband, a father of three kids, a grandfather and great-grandfather. At the first home game after his passing, the Yankees honored Berra with a pre-game ceremony, including No. 8s on their sleeves, a fixture for the rest of the season, as well as a wreath in the shape of an eight behind home plate. It was only fitting for one of the most influential Yankees, one of the most influential baseball players that many fans will have ever known. In the press release from the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center, lifelong and noted Yankees fan Billy Crystal is quoted as saying “(Berra) is cherished because he has never really changed …. the most caring, honest, decent, and good-humored player and person of his generation.” Perhaps many professional athletes nowadays could benefit from Berra’s example of being kind to everyone, not because it looks good for public relations, but because it is the right thing to do. Perhaps we all could follow Berra’s example of that in these modern times. So, Yankees fans, baseball fans and those that are just fans of a unique individual that made his mark, and was still beloved decades beyond his last time behind the plate, take a second the next time you are at Cooperstown or in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium to stop at his plaque, his retired No. 8 and say thank you Yogi. I know that I will.
