County Chamber to partner with Virginia Energy Share Program’s focus is on reducing state’s electricity consumption by the year 2020 Contributed report
The Goochland County Chamber of Commerce has announced a new partnership with Virginia Energy Sense
(VES) in an effort to help reduce electricity consumption in Goochland and across Virginia. An energy education program, VES is managed by the Virginia State Corporation Commission and focused on reducing statewide electricity consumption by 10 percent by 2020. Virginia Energy Sense’s mission is two-fold: to help Virginians understand their energy use and, more impor-
tantly, to learn how to save energy easily and cost effectively. Reducing electricity consumption is vital to Virginia’s business community because it will allow businesses to invest possibly millions of dollars that would otherwise be spent on energy costs into economic growth, job creation and innovation. By building partnerships across the Commonwealth, Virginia will reap the economic rewards of this critical effort.
“Partnering with the Goochland County Chamber of Commerce will help us spread the word about VES’s mission and help the Commonwealth reach its goal,” said Andy Farmer, manager of Virginia Energy Sense. The Goochland County Chamber of Commerce joins many other organizations throughout the Commonwealth that are already supporting VES, including local Chambers,

Thanks to the efforts of some local music lovers, Goochland County students have been getting an education in the history and cultural significance of Blues music. And, according to county teachers, the project has been a hit. As part of the Blues in the Schools (BITS) program, an effort by members of the Richmond-based River City Blues Society, celebrated musicians from the Richmond area and beyond have been
visiting county classrooms to perform and share their appreciation for the Blues. Goochland High School teacher Elizabeth Pearson, whose students were recently treated to a performance by musician Bruce Katz and his band, said the program melds seamlessly into the curriculum and helps capture students’ attention and imagination in a way few textbooks could. “We’re focusing on American Literature and American History this year, and music is an integral part of the American experience,” Pearson said. “The Blues, which originated in the Southern part of the United States, was created and reflected the experience of people of African descent in America. I wanted to draw this history into my classroom, especially as we approach the unit on the Civil War.” To Goochland Elementary School English teacher Kim Watts, whose class was able to take in a concert by the Peterson
Brothers of Austin, Texas, last September, watching the students joyfully responding to the music was proof enough of the programs’ ability to inspire. “The music was sensational, and we absolutely loved the entire afternoon,” Watts said. “We are so grateful to The River City Blues Society for providing such talented, inspiring young musicians.” River City Blues Society member Ellen Foster, who helps organize the BITS program, said the reaction they’ve seen from teachers and students so far is exactly what they were looking for. The goal now, she said, is to get more schools to say yes to the project. Foster said she wants to continue to instill a love of Blues music, but added that there is a higher goal for the effort as well. When it comes to the students, “I’d like them to see that education can be fun,” Foster said. “That’s the number one thing.”

Years later, college class assignment still resonates By Roslyn Ryan Editor
While the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis has sparked intense debate in recent weeks, it is no great leap to say that is also has served to underline — particularly as we near the Thanksgiving holiday —just how tremendously blessed many of us in the United States have been. I will admit that I have found myself turning to the issue in recent days whenever my patience begins to wear thin about some daily inconvenience or another. How much of a burden is a slow car in the left lane, after all, or a long line at the grocery store, when you consider the number of people who woke up this morning without a country, let alone a home? I also have found myself, as the debate rages on, looking back on a college course I was privileged to take years ago at Virginia Commonwealth University. I have forgotten the exact name of the course, but not the man who taught it. Dr. Dan Mouer was a professor in the Anthropology and Sociology Department, a Vietnam veteran, and a truly gifted teacher. And while I would go on to take several of his courses, there is one assignment above all the others

that I have never forgotten. In order to pass one course, each student was required to spend time volunteering with Richmond Refugee and Immigration Services, a volunteer organization whose offices were — conveniently for us— located smack dab in the middle of VCU’s campus. Studying on an urban campus, students at VCU at that time typically didn’t have to look far to find examples of those struggling with poverty or other challenges. But it was not until students in Dr. Mouer’s class began working with area refugee families — many of whom at the time recently had fled the brutal war in Bosnia — that we were exposed to the plight of people who had, quite literally, lost almost everything. We worried about exams and spring break plans. They worried about having to start over, completely, and support their families in a foreign land where they didn’t know a soul. As students, we offered what we could a ride to the store, help filling out forms or mailing letters, a few hours of English conversation practice but it was always clear that the people we worked with faced a long, grueling journey in the years ahead. see Mouer > 7

For father of son with DMD, a hopeful season By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Six years ago, I sat in a doctor’s office and received the most devastating news any parent can hear — a diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy for my son Jack. It came accompanied by a particular dismal prognosis. For the next few weeks, I struggled with thoughts of what might happen, or could happen, or, inevitably, would happen. Since the diagnosis, we’ve depended on the strength of the DMD community for support and guidance through some trying times. When I first walked out of that doctor’s office, I was filled with a sense of hopelessness, and felt helpless to combat such an overwhelming and devastating disease. As the years have progressed, that hopelessness has been replaced, and I have been inspired by the efforts of a group of parents who have refused to
give up on their children’s future. In recent years, they have been a vocal and vital voice for change, lobbying the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to reform approval methods and time periods for drugs that might offer hope to our community. Those efforts have resulted in a resurgence of efforts to find cures and treatments for DMD. Dr. Laura Hagerty, the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s scientific program officer, recently updated progress on three major drugs that are in their final stages, all of which offer real hope for treatment and cure of DMD. She wrote in a recent article: “It’s taken MDA 65 years of unwavering resolve, $209 million — more than any other organization aside from the federal government — as well as countless hours in the labs and clinics, and in the lives of MDA staff, researchers, clinicians and the families fighting this
disease, to get to where we are today. Closer than ever. Closer to treatments. Closer to cures.” I urge my fellow members of the Duchenne community to accept the promising news and allow that element of hope in to their lives. After years of heartbreak and dismay as progress seemed painfully slow as we watched time run out for many who we knew and loved, it’s time to let hope work its magic. An 11-year-old boy is naturally inquisitive, and my son Jack is no different. Aspects of his disease he’s never considered before are now the subject of constant questions, most of which have no answer. “When do you think a drug will come that will help me, Dad?” he innocently asks. “We’re working on it, Jack” is often my reply. The element that weighs the see Season > page 7

heaviest on my heart is my son’s unwavering belief that his mother and I will never allow anything bad to happen, and we can solve any problem. A cruel world assures us that’s not true, but children should feel secure and safe, free from the realities of mortality for as long as youthful innocence allows. But, this just might be the
time, an initial step to the day where I can deliver the best of news to my son and give him the simplest of gifts most of us take for granted, life itself. So, in this season of hope and promise, I am thankful for the possibility that Jack might have the chance he deserves, thanks to the tireless efforts of a community united and a dedicated and tenacious group of researchers who won’t give up. I now realize that we are
not in this battle alone, and the kindness of the numerous strangers and friends who have supported us in this journey have provided immeasurable strength to endure and continue to fight, both for Jack and me. Their thoughts, their kindness have provided a sense of Thanksgiving that only a community that cares can provide, and that’s a message of goodwill and charity that keeps hope alive, for all of us.

continued from >6 I still think of them often, particularly these days, and I silently thank Dr. Mouer for that assignment. Those who completed it almost certainly walked away with a broader perspective, and with a deeper level of empathy than we could have gained in any other way. As I give thanks this holiday, I’ll be thinking about all of the wonderful teachers I’ve had in my life, particularly those, like Dr. Dan Mouer, who found a way to teach things not found in any textbook. I won’t pretend that the question America faces when it comes to refugees has a clear, easy answer. It doesn’t. But when it comes to learning to see the humanity in those who are different from us, and those who need our help, I wish all students could learn that kind of lesson.

County dedicates grove in honor of former employee By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Family members and friends of former Deputy County Administrator Don Charles gathered Nov. 17 at Tucker Park in Maidens to dedicate the newly created Donald L. Charles Memorial Sycamore Grove. Charles, an accomplished and well-respected figure in the community, had already enjoyed a 30-year career as a Richmond City planner, landscape architect, and engineering administrator before coming to work in Goochland, where he was appointed as the county’s first Community Development Director in 2005. He passed away on Sept.
2, 2011, after a battle with cancer. “Today brings back a lot of memories for our family,” said Sharon Lind Charles, Charles’ wife of 41 years. Speaking of her late husband, Sharon recalled how much he loved to see the things he drew come to life. “When you honor Don, you honor our family too,” she said. “It will be with pride that our family comes to this park.” Charles’ many accomplishments during his tenure in Richmond included his instrumental role in the design and redevelopment of Shockoe Bottom, and the renovations of both the Landmark Theatre and Main Street Station.
Charles also was the Chief Administrative Officer behind the creation, design and development of the Richmond Convention Center. His passion for his work continued after he brought his talents to Goochland, where he played a key role in bringing HCA to the county and also transformed local zoning ordinances. To Beth Moore, president of Friends of Goochland Parks, the choice of Sycamore trees for the grove was a perfect choice, as they are known as a tree of both protection and “extraordinary possibilities.” “To me,” Moore said, “that captures Don’s talent perfectly.”

Goochland wins 2A state title By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Down two sets in the Group 2A state championship game, the Goochland Bulldogs needed a perfect three sets to get the state championship and end the season undefeated. And that’s exactly what the Bulldogs did. Fueled by a shifted, stronger defense, Goochland was able to come back after being lost in the first two sets to go on a three-set run to win the state championship over Marion Senior 21-25, 15-25, 25-20, 2523, 15-10.
“That was the best match we’ve ever played and had the opportunity to be in,” Goochland coach Jennifer Erixon said. “The best match I’ve ever had to coach. Very good group of girls that totally fought to the end.” That fight was never more evident than on the floor of the Siegel Center. While Goochland was able to erase a four-point lead in set one, and held a lead in the second set as well, the Scarlet Hurricanes were able to outpace the Bulldogs in both the first sets to take what appeared to be a commanding two set lead.
“I flat out said Marion was out-playing us,” Erixon said. “They were doing everything we knew how to do, just we weren’t doing. They were nervous, and instead of using their knowledge, they were just hitting the ball.” The two sets that Goochland dropped were only the second and third set all season that the Bulldogs didn’t win. “I was a little worried after we dropped the first set,” Erixon said. “I told them you had to fight with everything you have. If we were going to go down, we weren’t going to go down without a fight.”
But, the Bulldogs were not done yet. Marion edged out in set three, but the Goochland defense started really stepping up and forcing errors on the Hurricanes’ offense side. Casey Spencer had 26 digs, with Maddie Goff not far behind with 24, as the Bulldogs outdug the Hurricanes 107-91. “Twenty six? That’s unbelievable,” Spencer said in the media room after the game. She bruises all over her forearms from all the digs. “It was all worth it though,” she said. Madelyn Ott made her presence known in set three, the
set when she and her Bulldogs teammates said the tipping point of momentum was to the Goochland end. “I think we wanted it more,” Ott said. “We really pushed hard. We were like ‘this isn’t over.’” “I think what really helped the third game was, the first two games we were on edge and nervous,” Spencer added. “We got with each other. We started relax and support each other more in the third set.” Set four was an intense see Champs > 13

Champs continued from >12 experience as Marion erased what was at one point was a seven point lead to tied at 22. But, two Marion errors, then a Goochland error put it to 24-23. Ott slammed a kill home though, one of 19 for her in the game, to push the game to the decisive fifth set. Ott put the pedal down in set five, scoring four of the first seven Goochland points. The set would eventually get to 12-10 Goochland, before the Bulldogs ripped off three points in a row to secure the state championship. Then, jubilation and celebration. The title is Goochland’s fourth as an athletic program (football has two, baseball has one) and the Bulldogs finished undefeated at 27-0. “It’s way, way better,” Spencer said when if it felt like how they thought being state champs would be. “I think some of us came in here today thinking we’d get it easy,” Ott added. “But, we really had to fight for it.” Erixon said that it was “pretty unbelievable” to hoist the trophy, which all of the Bulldogs wanted a piece of on the court of VCU. But, the Bulldogs entire season has been an unbelievable run. It was only fitting that it would end that way too.

Greensville upsets Goochland By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
When the final gun sounded Friday night, you didn’t need the scoreboard as it flickered off for the final time to know who won last week’s 2A playoff game between Goochland and Greensville County. The looks on the faces of Bulldog seniors as they walked off the field said it all. Greensville relied on a powerful ground game and dodged several bullets on defense to advance in the Group 2AEast playoffs with a 22-19 win over Goochland last week. For the Bulldogs, it was a game of lost opportunities and an untimely ending to what could have been. “I feel bad for these seniors that we had to go out this way,” coach Joe Fowler said after the game.
Goochland lost the ball on an uncharacteristic three drives deep in Eagle territory, and Greensville quarterback Shyheim Anderson engineered long time consuming drives that kept the ball out of the Bulldog offense’s hands in the second half. The Bulldogs opened the game with a good drive, but a fumble ended the threat. The defense held, but Goochland turned the ball over on downs in Eagle territory. The Bulldogs opened the second period on the visitors’ 8-yard line, but a loose ball also ended that drive. This time, the Eagles capitalized on the miscue and drove 92 yards for the opening score. Anderson scored his first of three scores as he battered his way six yards for the score. The twopoint conversion, also a quarterback keeper, was good and the Eagles led 8-0.
Calvin Martin answered that score with a 68-yard breakaway run for Goochland’s first score. The two-point try failed and the Bulldogs were down 8-6. After Chris Scriber blocked an Eagle punt, Daric Clarke raced 30 yards to give Goochland it’s first and only lead at 12-8. Greensville closed the half with a drive that provided the go ahead touchdown. The teams played a scoreless third quarter, but again, had its chances late in the quarter when several runs by Wyatt Smith and key third down scamper by Chenault put the Bulldogs deep in Eagles territory. A bad exchange spelled doom for that drive. Early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles picked a Chenault pass and set up shop deep in their territory. Anderson escaped what appeared to be a sure safety and
fired a 30-yard strike to Jordan Peebles to sustain the drive that eventually supplied the winning touchdown. Chenault answered quickly with a little over three minutes remaining when he connected with Clarke for a 19 yard scoring reception, but it was too little too late. “We made too many mistakes at crucial times,” Fowler said. “We fumbled three times in the red zone, we dropped some passes and missed some tackles.” For a group of seniors who felt like they still had some football left, it’s a disappointment the coach tried to mitigate. “They’re great kids and they’re going to do a lot more important things than play high school football,” Fowler said. “I told them worse things are going to happen to them than losing a football game… and they’ll be ready.”

A new business in Goochland is looking to help local hunters and fishermen pick up the supplies they need without leaving the county. James River Sporting Goods, located in the former Marsh Oil Building (2950 River Road West)
in Goochland’s Courthouse area, sells a range of hunting and fishing equipment, including ammunition, fishing poles and accessories. The business is an attempt to fill what owner Tom Porter sees as a gap in the local market. “Before, every time you wanted something, you had to go into town,” said Porter, who also owns and operates Tom’s Auto Service next door. “I wanted to bring a place like this to Goochland so you don’t have to do that anymore.” In addition to serving as an authorized Parker Bow distribut-
er, the shop also stocks minnows, goldfish and eels for use as bait. “This was really his dream,” said Paula Porter, Tom’s wife, who helped him renovate the building and can often be found behind the sales counter during the week. Both say they have been pleased by the community’s response so far, and are planning to expand their operation in the near future. James River Sporting Goods is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call the store at (804) 556-0269.
