County celebrates new launch spot Contributed report
On Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, the Friends of Goochland Parks broke ground on a new kayak and canoe launch at Tucker Park at Maidens Crossing. The launch will provide the only non- motorized access to the James River in Goochland County. Funded in part by Goochland County,
the launch is expected to be completed in early 2016. Friends of Goochland Park’s board members Don Leeger and Kitty Kimmel, who are avid paddlers, noted that Goochland County is blessed with 40 miles of James River frontage. “In breaking ground for this launch, we are taking advantage of this unique location that
is an easy section to navigate and is family and fishing friendly,” said Kimmel. “It will provide a safe environment where paddlers don’t have to juggle vehicles and boat trailers to get to the river and don’t have to cross railroad tracks. It will eventually be a part of the Goochland County River Trail and provide a site for outdoor training and events.”

As he tells it, attorney Michael Smith didn’t set out to practice law. In fact, the Goochland resident says it wasn’t until late in his college career that one of his professors suggested he’d make a good lawyer. As it turns out, that professor was right. Last October, Smith was installed Smith as president of the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL), a group widely considered to be the premier professional trial lawyers organization in the United States and Canada. Smith, a partner at Christian & Barton, L.L.P., in Richmond, serves as the 66th president of the ACTL, and will be only the fourth Virginia lawyer to hold the position. Those Virginians preceding him were James W. Morris III (2004-2005); the late R. Harvey Chappell Jr. (1986-1987), who was also a partner at Christian see Smith > 3

continued from >1 & Barton; and the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. (1969-1970). Smith said he was both humbled and honored to learn of his election to the ACTL’s highest office, and credited the many mentors he’s had over the years with helping to shape the professional he has become. He recalled his first job serving as Judge Robert R. Merhige, a man he described as a father figure. “While I did not have the capacity to absorb all that he had to offer, I hope that some of his judgment, intu-
ition and humor rubbed off on me,” Smith said. “When I finished my clerkship and started working at Christian & Barton, I was assigned to R. Harvey Chappell, Jr. Harvey was a stern task master, to say the least, but he became a real mentor and a great friend. He was the best pure lawyer that I have ever known.” Smith is a former president of both the Bar Association of the City of Richmond and the Virginia State Bar. When it comes to what makes a successful trial attorney, he said he has learned over the years that there are numerous key traits. “Certainly, judgment, intuition, a willingness to lis-

ten, and a culture of hard work are important,” Smith said, noting that another key trait for any successful trial lawyer is resilience, particularly in the face of a loss. “One of the great things about the practice of law is the diversity of challenges which lawyers face,” Smith said, and he has learned over the years the value of being able to suffer a setback and keep moving forward.
“Sometimes the overwhelming challenge is not obtaining the preferable result,” Smith said, “and being able to come back the next day facing the same kind of challenge for another client.”

A change of scenery After over a decade in the movie business, Goochland High School grad Lori Russell is shifting her focus

Lori Russell, seen here scouting locations in Mississippi for a movie called “Life at These Speeds,” got her start in the industry as a production assistant shortly after graduating from George Mason University in 2005.

he’s traveled the world and worked alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood, but now, after over a decade in the film industry, 2000 Goochland High School graduate Lori Russell may be saying “that’s a wrap.” Russell, who recently finished work as a key assistant location manager and scout on the film “Loving” in Caroline County, said last week that she has decided to step away from working on films to explore other opportunities. The move will mark the end — for now, at least — of a chapter in Russell’s life that she describes as equal parts exhilarating and challenging. “At this point I really feel like I am ready for a change,” said Russell, who has spent the last eight years working in
the locations field. Still, she admits, despite the 12-14 hour days and the constant problem-solving that came with her most recent role, the work won’t be easy to give up. Since snagging her first job as a production assistant in 2005 on the film “The Invasion,” Russell, who graduated from George Mason University with a degree in Communications, has been immersed in the craft of movie-making. She broke into the business the old-fashioned way—a little luck and a whole lot of hard work—and managed to impress her supervisors so much that they helped her find work in Los Angeles. After working as a production assistant on the movie “Rush Hour 3,” she made the transition to location scouting, eventually working her way up to the role of key assistant location manager.
For those unfamiliar with film industry lingo, Russell described her most recent role as essentially problem solver extraordinaire. Location managers are tasked with making sure everything pertaining to a film’s location is in order, from contracts to catering to permits and dozens of other details. “Basically, we’re the liaisons between the studio and the community,” Russell explained, which often means having to juggle tasks large (closing down three city blocks to film a car chase scene) and small (finding a way to quiet a barking dog in a nearby home during the filming of a scene). Working on movies has always exciting, Russell said, and even on the most challenging days it offered tremensee Russell > 5

On role of ordinances, a slight change of heart By Roslyn Ryan Editor
W
hen it comes to the question of what people can and can’t do on their own property, I have always aligned myself more or less with the “live and let live” crowd. In other words, provided someone wasn’t actually inflicting pain on his neighbors, let him paint his house lime green, run an appliance repair shop out of his garage, or park a small armada of broken-down vehicles in the yard. I’ve even, at times, shaken my head at those who railed against their neighbors for various offenses. I once listened during a public meeting as a woman lambasted an elderly neighbor for seeking a conditional use permit to give piano lessons out of her home. Sheesh! Of course, life has a way or reminding you that the situations in which you think you have all the answers are almost always the ones where you don’t. Over the holiday, thanks to the generosity of a good friend, my husband and I had the opportunity to spend a few days at the Outer Banks

in North Carolina. The trip was delightful in every way, save for one small detail: our friends’ neighbors. Rather, our friends’ neighbors’ hobbies. Starting at around 7 a.m. each morning, the people living next door staged what sounded like their own personal X-games, complete with several of the loudest motocross bikes on planet Earth. Round and round they went, circling the house on a well-worn track and shredding the nerves of anyone unfortunate enough to be located within 100 yards of their property. Our friends said they had gotten used to it, but by the time we left on Sunday I will admit that my position on land ownership rights had begun to shift. I still think we need to be careful in how we limit our citizens’ ability to enjoy their property in any way they choose. But my visit to the residential race track offered a different view on how one person’s enjoyable hobby can spell the end of his neighbor’s sanity. To slightly tweak the old adage, I’ve begun to realize that sometimes good nuisance ordinances are what actually make good neighbors.

Students’ generosity reaches record-breaking heights Goochland High School students collected over 1,000 canned goods and packaged food items for the Goochland Christmas Mother this year, breaking the previous record. In addition, they raised $664.75 to help support the cause. The outpouring of generosity is attributed to student leaders from Interact, the Nationnal Honor Society, Student Ambassadors, the Student Council Association, the Art National Honor Society and the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. In addition, generous donations were received from Goochland Middle School, Randolph, Byrd and Goochland Elementary Schools. The Christmas Mother provides food and gifts to those in need in Goochland County to help bring them a more joyous Christmas.
It’s beginning to smell like Christmas By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Over the years, I’ve written about every aspect of the holiday season imaginable multiplied by a dozen. Most of those reflections have centered on the little things, the family and friends that make our time together at the holidays special. When most of us think of our childhood and remember important events in our lives, many of them involve the holidays or family gatherings. Last week, it suddenly dawned on me that I’ve never described one of my most precious and treasured memories. Miss Lilly’s Whiskey Cake was already a legend when I had my first bite as a child. My grandmother
had made the cake all of her life, won numerous blue ribbons with its secret recipe, and served it at every family reunion, birthday and holiday gathering I can remember. The cake contained a decadent mix of goodies that, when blended just right, produced a pound cake that was indescribably good. As an impatient and bothersome teenager not entirely happy being at grandmother’s house in Maryland, away from my friends, at Christmastime, I ventured into her large kitchen as she was just retrieving a huge mixing bowl from her pantry. “What are you making?” I asked. “Whiskey cake,” she replied. With hesitance, she allowed me to sit at the kitchen table and watch her perform her magic with flour,
sugar, eggs, vanilla and a healthy shot of Jack Daniels whiskey. Since her death, many have tried to duplicate her success with the cake, and many came close. The best version and closest re-creation came from my high school girlfriend’s mother, who got the recipe from my mother. Truth be known, I didn’t think about Nannie’s whiskey cake for years, as traditions are lost and new ones installed. At some family gatherings, some relatives would make an attempt at the cake, but no one in this generation could make Miss Lilly’s whiskey cake. When I had my first child and the holidays rolled around, I decided it was time for me to attempt the seemingly unattainable. But, I had a see Christmas > page 7

Ask Fern
Christmas continued from >6
A magical holiday—simplified Dear Fern, Among my friends and family, I have been known for years as the Holiday Decorating Diva. Every year for the last 20 years I have gone all out for Thanksgiving and Christmas — tons of lights, inflatables, festive garlands, wreaths, holiday dishes, two different Christmas trees, giant table centerpieces etc. Call it getting older or just mellowing out, but this year for some reason I am not quite feeling it. Can you offer a few suggestions for making my home feel festive without a ton of work? Dear Holiday Decorating Diva, Ah yes, we sometimes get so far ahead of ourselves trying to organize and brace for the holidays that we create quite a lot of work for ourselves, don’t we? By the time we have hauled in all of the storage bins full of decorations, des-
ignated wrap and mail centers, given our clothes closets a holiday wardrobe check and scratched our heads over which table setting to go with (phew!) this jolly fete has become a job, hasn’t it? And in the process we have perhaps lost hold of something even more important: that beautiful holiday seasons were truly made to E-N-J-O-Y. So this year, why not promise to ground ourselves first in the values of our traditions, and then to S-I-M-P-L-I-F-Y. I dare say one can create a festive home without recruiting all turkeys, pilgrims, carolers and toy soldiers from that dusty old holiday figurine stash. Why not put out a few small live trees instead that will last all winter? Gather a cluster of favorite ornaments, mound up high
in a gold or silver bowl and throw a little tinsel on to create a magical centerpiece. A boxwood wreath on the front door and fresh greens cut straight from the yard lit with a tiny strand of white lights in the entry way will greet holiday guests with the warmest of welcomes. Multi-colored candy canes hanging from a chandelier will bring the eye up with a twinkle and the children will be especially happy if they get to take one home with them! Think beyond the usually adorned interior spaces and make a little wonder and delight in window view by placing tea lights outside in miniature lanterns and hanging them from a branch or placing them casually on a porch table. Be creative, and in the process be thankful, joyful and triumphant in simplifying this holiday season!
secret weapon that was given to me straight from the chef’s hands to mine, a handwritten set of notes explaining how to make the cake, with all the little details and Miss Lilly’s helpful hints. My first attempt didn’t work out well. Honestly, the first dozen or two cakes missed the mark, purely edible but not similar to the classic. I’ve been making the cake for years now, and the result is an amazing facsimile of Miss Lilly’s creation, always the first to disappear at gatherings or

parties. That faded sheet of paper with Nannie’s recipe is long lost and probably hidden in the middle of an outdated cookbook. But, the recipe is strong in my mind, and, Thanksgiving night, my daughter Emma put me to the test and asked to help make the famous cake. My mind flashed back to that afternoon spent with my grandmother in that big old kitchen with the aroma of that whiskey cake permeating the room. Standing there with Emma as we splashed flour in all the wrong places, it suddenly seemed like the holidays, and,

somehow, my grandmother was still an important part of the celebration. The cake turned out perfect and didn’t last long around here. I stopped counting how many slices I had due to my limited math skills. My grandmother taught me many things that endure in my beliefs as a man and a father, but she also left me something a little tastier, and much more fattening. And don’t worry, I’m writing the recipe down for Emma, the designated keeper of one of our family’s most valued possessions — Miss Lilly’s Whiskey Cake recipe.

Amaryllis for the holidays Fern family By Donna Cottingham Contributing Writer
O
ne of the many great things about the holiday season is the abundance of amaryllis bulbs available. No matter how cold it is outside, you can get in touch with your inner gardener with the giant, exotic blooms of Amaryllis flowers. Rarely in gardening does such a small amount of effort yield such dramatic results.
Bulbs are available singly or in kits that contain a growing medium, pot, bulb and instructions. I usually buy boxed kits and buy lots of them. The kit bulbs generally bloom as profusely as more expensive bulbs. To make a bold statement using Amaryllis flowers, place three bulb pots in a large container such as an oblong wicker basket or a decorative metal container, cover with Spanish moss and add a colorful bow. Or, buy several bulbs and stagger the planting schedule over a period of weeks. That way you can keep your favorite ceramic pot filled with blooms throughout the holiday season. When potting the bulb, insert a thin bamboo stake alongside it so that once the plant gets tall, you can stake the stem with raffia or ribbon for support. Potted bulbs make great gifts for the elderly who don’t need another doodad in a small apartment. Older people and nursing home residents enjoy watching the plant grow as much as they enjoy the flowers. The blooms last for weeks and once they finish, the plant can simply be thrown away. After the holidays, bulb prices are usually reduced and the bright “Red Lion” amaryllis makes a lovely Valentine’s gift. Pot it in January and it should be near bloom by Valentine’s. Amaryllis are tropical but have been hybridized by Dutch growers for many years. Colors range from white to pink to red, with numerous variations in between. People often ask about getting a plant to boom again next year. It is not difficult. Here are instructions.
offers plenty of variety By Terry Festa Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardener
Who can resist the gracefulness of ferns? They grow well under forest canopy and along creeks, streams and other sources of permanent moisture where they provide shelter for frogs, toads and lizards. They are ideal for fluffy ground covers and border plantings, and are especially useful in erosion control and soil stabilization. The wispy green fronds are complimentary in all sorts of floral arrangements. The young, tightly curled shoots of the ostrich fern called fiddleheads are edible and available in some supermarkets in the spring. The more than 12,000 species of this ancient, herbaceous, foliage plant have been around for over 300 million years. The word fern is from the Anglo-Saxon ‘fearn’ meaning feather which describes the delicate, divided leaves called fronds. They have a wide range of variability with regards to shape, texture, color, sheen and size and are among the most adaptable of plants for home gardeners. They are quite free from disease and insect pests and, best yet, they are deer resistant! Ferns differ from other plants we grow since they reproduce by a unique method from spores. Spores are tiny dots the size of grains of dust. They grow inside of casings on the underside of the fronds or on separate fertile fronds within bead-like modified leaflets. The easiest way to obtain ferns is to purchase plants from nurseries and garden centers. You will know the exact cultivar you will be adding to your landscape. Be sure the plants you buy are hardy

Forcing an Amaryllis plant to re-bloom 1.Cut back the flower stalk after blooming stops, but allow the leaves to grow. You can place your plant outdoors for summer in partial shade. 2. Keep watered so the soil is moist, but not wet. 3. Stop feeding in August. Reduce watering gradually and stop watering after three weeks. 4.When it’s time to bring plants indoors, in September or early October, move your Amaryllis to a cool (55 to 60 degrees F.), dark, dry place for six to eight weeks. The plant needs rest in order to rebloom. The foliage will turn yellow and die back. 5. In November or later, move the pot into a warm, bright area and resume watering. Do not re-pot since the plant likes to be somewhat pot bound. Be patient. The plant should bloom in six to eight weeks.

Third time’s the charm for Summitt Goochland’s setter has off-court goals in mind as well By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
K
Goochland senior Josie Summitt captured an elusive state championship in her final season as a member of the Bulldogs. She was a big part of the defense in the state final, an aspect of the game that she really subscribes to.. “I believe that defense determines who is going to win,” she said.
eeping her eye on the ball has become a way of life for Goochland senior Josie Summitt… both on the court and off. For the past three years, she’s honed her skills as a setter for Goochland’s championship volleyball team. It’s a position that requires quick decisionmaking, a steady focus and a sense of team spirit that ensures the ball goes where it’s directed. “It’s a decision making position, kind of like the quarterback in football,” she said after a recent playoff game. “It’s a lot of pressure but when you have the hitters we have, it takes the pressure off. All of our hitters are strong.” Since her premiere in tenth grade, Josie’s team has enjoyed enormous success, playing deep in to the playoffs each season but coming up just short. The third time did, indeed, turn out to be the charm for Josie and her fellow Bulldogs who captured a state title last week at the Siegel Center in Richmond. “This year, we clicked in a way we didn’t last year,” she
said. Summitt was a key part of the Bulldogs’ come-frombehind win in the state final against Marion. She recorded 15 assists, second most on the team behind Kealie Lachniet in the state final, and 11 digs during the five-set thriller. “Offense is very important, but the team with the better defense has the better thing going, and we showcased that,” she said after the title win. Goochland coach Jennifer Erixon said Summitt played a large role in the team’s improved chemistry that proved to be championship quality. “Josie had played for me since sixth grade,” Erixon said. “She’s a huge part of our offense, and her knowledge and strategy have really contributed to this year’s success. She loves to be challenged.” Over the years, Erixon has gained a healthy respect for Summitt’s judgment, and the senior has garnered her coach’s trust and respect. “She’s our quarterback. She runs my offense and makes great calls,” the coach said. Although the previous teams had plenty of athletic prowesses, this year’s team came together and achieved a sense of team that the other squads didn’t equal. “This team had a sense of togetherness,” Summitt said. “I’ve played with most of these
girls for years. The chemistry this year was the difference.” Summittt’s commitment and dedication on the court serve her well in other pursuits as well, and the senior has a plan for her future. She hopes to become a physician’s assistant but hasn’t decided on a college quite yet. But, she’s narrowed it to three choices — Virginia Tech, James Madison University and William and Mary. “I am interested in majoring in biology and then attending physician’s assistant school,” Summitt said recently. When Summitt isn’t playing volleyball, she dedicates time to a group she holds close to her heart. “I am a member of CARE (Cancer Awareness Reaching Everyone),” she said. “We do different fundraisers and raise money for various cancer foundations, and we make baskets for community members who have cancer.” Summitt plans on concentrating her efforts on career goals and does not plan on playing volleyball in college. That doesn’t mean she won’t miss the experience her years on the court have supplied. “I’ll miss just being out there and playing. I’ve made so many friends and memories. I’ve learned so much about myself and other people… and a lot about life.”
