Former contestant on ‘Chopped’ has been forced to close shop since falling ill Jan. 4 By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The local community continues to rally around a local business owner working to recover after an accident last week left her hospitalized and unable to work. According to a statement released Saturday by her family, Michele Wright, owner of the Blonde Butcher Baker shop on River Road in the Courthouse area, suffered a seizure while driving in Hanover County on Jan. 4. She was reported missing Wright after her two teenage sons had not heard from her for several hours, and eventually found in her vehicle after an extensive search. Wright, a celebrated local chef and fixture on both the Goochland food and farmers market scenes, had recently gained a measure of fame as a contestant on see Chef > 2

Decision on West Creek rezoning deferred By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The Goochland County Planning Commissioners voted unanimously during their Jan. 5 meeting to defer their decision on a proposal that would bring retail development to the northeast quadrant of the Patterson Ave. and Route 288 intersection. PWC Properties, LLC, and Riverstone Group, LLC, have asked the commissioners to recommend approval of three separate measures, including amending a number of proffers for

the planned development park known as West Creek Business Park. The proposal, which includes the rezoning of two parcels, drew a steady stream of residents eager to voice their opposition during the public comment period. Echoing the concerns of several other speakers, David Neal urged Planning Commissioners not to forget what had drawn so many residents to the county. It wasn’t “to look at the back of trash cans, [or] to look at the back of stores,” Neal said. “That’s just not what Goochland is about. People

move here and build nice houses, not to have that but to get away from that.” To Jane Christy, who has lived in the county for over two decades, allowing the plan to proceed would fly in the face of good zoning practice, and provide only “short term corporate profits and a license to commit urban sprawl.” According to a letter that residents living near the site of the proposed project received on Oct. 11, the development will feature restaurants, a grocery store, and retail shops. “We have concluded that a retail development see Planning Commission > 4

When it comes to espionage, they can do better By Roslyn Ryan Editor

I have to be honest: Like so many others, I am just about ready to read the very last story about Russian hacking. For one thing, the coverage devoted to this topic would almost certainly be better directed at how the incoming administration plans to tackle some very real issues facing our country. Also, to be frank, I just don’t think the Russians brought their A game this time. Sure, they may have embarrassed a few people, but the vast majority

of us were completely unaffected. So I got to thinking: If they so desired, how could the Russians use their finely-tuned hacking skills to truly make my life miserable. The following, presented in the hopes that this week’s issue doesn’t make it to Moscow, are just a few suggestions: Make it so that whenever I ask my phone for directions, regardless of where I want to go, I am given only routes that require $15 worth of tolls. Bonus: Have it remind me of the exit I need to take, but only after I have just passed it. Find the place on my laptop

that I have all of my favorite recipes stored, and slightly change all the ingredient amounts — not so much that I would notice, but enough to make the dish taste terrible. Hop onto my Amazon account and send “care packages” of deodorant, soap and breath mints to all of my friends with a note that says “Hi, I thought you could really use this.” Hack into my car’s computer system and reprogram the back-up beeper so it only goes off after I back into something. Locate that silly, petty email to my sister that I typed out after an argument three weeks ago but never

sent. Send it. Find my credit card information. Go to an online grocery retailer. Pay to have a single bottle of diet raspberry iced tea delivered to my house. Repeat 500 times. Again, far be it from me to tell the Russian hackers how to do their jobs, but they clearly have some work to do if they want to truly impress anybody. So, until they figure out how to do more than prove that politicians behave like, well, politicians when they think no one is looking, I’ll be content to say das vedanya to this particular storyline.

For this dad, ‘snow survival’ gets better with time By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Preparing for an impending snowstorm requires a fair amount of savvy, and prepping for the preparation also can present problems. After living in Richmond for many decades, I’ve learned that the slightest mention of snow evokes an almost manic reaction by area shoppers. After numerous disappointments, I’ve learned the truly efficient preppers get their work done the day before the eve of the storm.

I’ve experienced the disappointment of envisioning a hearty pot of stew on a snowy afternoon and having it replaced with cold cuts and not our normal loaf of bread. Making plans for three kids trapped in small quarters for three days is serious business, and the least oversight can have consequences. Perhaps, at this stage in my life, I’ve finally learned the art of snow preparation. I stocked the refrigerator with pot roast, chili and hamburger, which I froze since I was buying it two days in advance. I turned the nice chuck roast

into a hearty pot of beef stew that I thought would yield leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch. Well, everyone knows what happens to the bestlaid plans, and the kids finished off the stew on the first night. A half dozen scrambled eggs and 12 hours later, I’m retrieving spaghetti sauce from the freezer when I realize the hamburger is frozen hard as a rock. The snow is falling quite briskly now, and it’s too cold for any sleigh riding or outdoor activities, and I’m advising the kids that supper will be a potluck affair, featuring

chili, spaghetti. The news draws no response from children who are already beginning to ask if school will be cancelled on Monday. To be honest, they don’t look like they are starving, but we make and bake a homemade pound cake just in case of emergency. By Sunday, the hamburger is thawed, and people are moving along the frozen tundra outside our condo, but we remain snowbound more by choice than necessity. And, there’s that frozen hamsee Snow > 7

Letter to the Editor One group of special teachers has RES kids calling out ‘Encore!’ Dear Editor, We called them “Specials” at Christiansburg Elementary when I was growing up. I’ve heard “Resources” or “Extras.” At Randolph Elementary , we use the term “Encore” to describe our weekly sessions of Music, Art, P.E., and Library. I think I’ve figured out why. Let me show you the teacher side of it first: our teachers are K-12 certified in their specialty, utilizing Virginia curriculum and their knowledge of student interest and attention span to craft meaningful experiences. Randolph has 450 kids with 27 classes (pre-K to 5th). The Encore team has five or six 45minute classes per day, seeing one class from each grade level. Lesson design is not just about the content; it’s also about the skill level. Everything takes adaptation from grade to grade (and often class to class). So when First Grade walks out and Kindergartners are standing at the door to come in, it takes a special setup and mentality to change gears. The students don’t see the behind the scenes preparation. Instead they walk into the next step on their clay creature, a new musical game, an obstacle course, or robot programing. Parents see the glazed cakes in the display case, hear an amazing winter performance, appreciate that kids crave fitness, and can’t believe the way a library has been transformed. I see Cindy Edmonds spending weeks rolling clay slabs, firing finished pieces, and mounting proud works of art. I shake my head at Alden Bean, amazed at how the transitions are as musically engaging as the lesson itself. I find myself drawn into the gym activities, appreciating the sportsmanship that shines through our kids as modeled by Emily Hanna. And I don’t see Letters > page 7

Goochland wrestling continuing growth, success in ’17 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

In just its second season of existence, the Goochland Bulldogs wrestling team is not shying away from the competition. And, while the Bulldogs are a bit short-handed in some weight classes, they are meeting that com-

petition head-on and succeeding when they do. “I think we’ve been doing pretty good,” coach Kenny Bouwens said. “We’ve won some matches this year. We came out ahead of Cumberland. We’ve wrestled some other teams that we were really close with even though we’re giving up three or four matches to forfeit.

Overall, I think we’re not as strong as I’d like to be as a team because we’re missing some weight classes. But, individually we have some guys that are looking strong.” In addition to beating Cumberland in a tri-meet on Dec. 7, the Bulldogs beat Bluestone 4818 as well. On Jan. 4 against Cosby and

Highland Springs, the Bulldogs fell to the Titans 60-18 and were just edged by the Springers 48-30. The Bulldogs did come away with some individual wins in the tri-meet. Against Cosby, Josh Hobbs took down his opponent in the 132 class by pin in 5:36. Hobbs is one wrestler that

Bouwens pointed out is having a stellar season so far. “It’s his second season wrestling,” he said. “He’s 10-1. We’ve gone up against everyone in our district and Cosby and Highland Springs and he’s hung tough against them. We actually wrestled him a weight class up against Highland

Roundup: Former Cadets shine in college football playoffs By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Two Benedictine graduates have been making a name for themselves during their respective team’s playoff runs in college football this season. Clelin Ferrell has been a disruptive force for the Clemson Tigers this season. That force didn’t get the chance to play the entire national championship game against Alabama on Jan. 9, however, as Ferrell fell to injury in the third quarter. He hurt his ankle and was

Wrestling continued from >8 Springs and he still won. He’s a tough kid. He was a state placer in cross county. He has a lot of stamina and endurance, so I think a lot of kids can’t hang with him energy-wise. So, I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do this year.” Daniel Thompson also won by pin in 5:19 at the 138 weight class. “(Thompson) looks promising so far,” Bouwens said. “He’s 7-6 so far, but he’s in one of the toughest weight classes. When he loses a match, it’s not necessarily that he got beat, but it was a tough match all around.” At 182, Brian Herrera won by pin in 3:42. “He came on with us late because he was with the football team,” Bouwens said of Herrera. “He was a a runner-up for the state tournament last year. This year,

taken off the field and did not return to the field the rest of the game. Clemson defeated Alabama 35-31 to win the national championship. Ferrell, a redshirt freshman, started 14 games for the Tigers this season and has 49 tackles and six sacks this season. Ferrell has also accumulated 11.5 tackles for a total of 64 yards lost, the most on the Tigers defense. Against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31, he was named defensive MVP after three tackles for loss and a sack in a 31-0 rout.

The Tigers defense held the Buckeyes to just 215 total yards. Ferrell was a two-sport athlete at Benedictine, playing basketball as well. Cornell Urquhart also earned some hardware with the James Madison University Dukes this season. The Dukes won the Football Championship Series title in a 28-13 win over Youngstown State. Urquhart, a junior defensive lineman, had three tackles against the Penguins, one breakup and one quarterback hurry.

I’m hoping he’ll make some noise and make it to states.” While those three have been the standouts thus far, Bouwens said that the entire team has had at least one individual win this season. “Everybody’s gotten a win,” he said. “Even our new guys who are wrestling for the first time are doing well. So, next year, if we can keep them in the room, we’ll have a good team.” Bouwens said that one thing he hopes to build toward is the team continuing to grow with more wrestlers and building the sport in the county. Part of that dream is to have a pipeline system start in the middle school. “The key is to bring in more and more,” he said. “We just need to keep growing Goochland wrestling and get to the point where we have a few guys at each weight class and even have a JV team. That’d be big for us. The

key is the feeder programs. We’re always talking about this. We’d love to see a middle school program start up. We’d also want to work with some of the locals, like River City Wrestling. Benedictine does stuff with the youth wrestling as well.” Toward that end, Goochland wrestling had a summer program through the parks-and-rec department. “We had about 23 young boys and girls (at the camp,)” he said. “Just growing the sport and getting more people interested in it. It’ll take a little while, but we’ll get there. We just need to grow those numbers.” Goochland was scheduled to wrestle at King William on Jan. 7, but that was postponed due to the snow that hit the area. The snow might also have put the Jan. 11 match against Varina in doubt. The Bulldogs will hit the
