New county attorney Tara McGee marked her first day on the job in Goochland this week, officially taking the reins from the retiring Norman Sales. But while she may be new to the job, McGee insisted in an interview last week that county leaders have already gone out of their way to make her feel like a part of the family. From the day she first met with the board of supervisors, “I have really felt that this is such a welcoming place,” said McGee, who spent the last 13 years serving in Chesterfield’s attorney’s office. “I just have a really great feeling about coming here.” McGee, the mother of two college-age children, Katie and Brian, and wife to Chesterfield Commonwealth’s Attorney B.J. McGee, admits she did not know a tremendous amount about Goochland’s inner workings McGee before applying for her new position. Her strongest connection to the county, McGee, explained, had been through former Goochland County Administrator Becky Dickson. The two had worked together in Chesterfield, where Dickson, who died on Jan. 18 after a battle with cancer, was serving as that county’s budget director and director of human services.

On Thursday, Jan. 26, Mt. Gilead Preschool hosted the 2nd annual Father’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Night. After enjoying dinner together, the fathers and children worked together to design a catapult that would throw indoor snowballs into targets, such as igloos and snowmen. Field Day group marks end of year-long quilt project Contributed report
In celebration of the recent 100th conference of the Virginia Association of Fairs (VAF) at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Field Day of the Past volunteers watched as a quilt they had envisioned a year ago was auctioned off to benefit the VAF Scholarship
Fund. At the 2016 VAF Conference, father and daughter Dennis and Denise Gammon conceived the idea of a quilt which would be comprised of squares made by VAF member fairs, then assembled, quilted and presented for the annual Scholarship Auction during

way. The daily work of a county attorney in a smaller locality like Goochland can encompass a wide range of duties, McGee said, and a certain degree of flexibility can come in handy. When it comes to one of the key lessons she’s learned over the course of her years in the legal field, McGee says there is no substitute for making sure the people she’s working with know they have her full attention. “What I’ve always tried to do is really listen to what is being asked, and then find out what I can do to answer or assist that person,” said McGee. To county administrator John Budesky, the skills McGee will bring to her new role will be invaluable as the county moves forward. McGee “complements our team and will provide new perspectives to address an array of issues that we face today as well as in planning for the future,” Budesky said. “The Board has tremendous respect for the experience and professionalism Ms. McGee brings, which will be of value as we address planning and land use related issues.”

Goochland dog featured in ‘Puppy Bowl’ When Goochland residents Tom and Dianne Ireton decided to adopt Oliver, their new English pointer puppy, from the Green Dogs Unleashed

part in Animal Planet’s annual “Puppy Bowl,” that’s exactly what he’ll become. Deaf since birth, Oliver joined the Ireton’s four other dogs last September and quickly became just like any other member of the family. “In all honesty, he doesn’t seem to think he is any different,” said Tom, explaining that while Oliver generally relies on his canine siblings for visual cues — when they run to the door to greet someone, for example, he follows suit — but hasn’t been any more difficult to train. In fact, it was his deafness that first got Oliver noticed by the Puppy Bowl producers. This year, in addition to Oliver, the show will feature a three legged puppy named Lucky and an Australian shepherd named Winston who is blind and deaf. The Iretons first learned that
he had been selected when they went to pick Oliver up from Green Dogs. They were told that they could either take him home right then and make the trip with him to take part in the Puppy Bowl, or they could wait and bring him home two weeks later. The Iretons decided to sign on for the adventure, a decision Tom says they didn’t regret. “It was a really neat experience, just a lot of fun,” he said. “We met a lot of people, and a ton of dogs.” These days, with his time in New York just a happy memory, Oliver continues to spend his days learning and growing under the watchful eyes of Tom and Dianne. They take him to Green Dogs regularly for behavior training, and work with him on learning hand commands. Thanks to Tom, Oliver even gets to enjoy a few daily games
who helped coordinate the project, “The quilt is a true representation of the fair industry in Virginia. It is a symbol of pride in ourselves, in each other and what we can do and each square is unique, just as each fair in Virginia is one of a kind.” The auction brought in approximately $20,000, all of
which will go to VAF scholarships. Field Day of the Past is sponsored by the nonprofit Rockville-Centerville Steam and Gas Historical Association. The annual event takes place the second full weekend in September. Dates for the 2017 show are Sept. 15, 16, and 17.

GFCFS receives $400K for ongoing capital campaign Contributed report
Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) has received a $400,000 challenge grant from The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation. This grant will support the ALL. HERE. NOW. Capital Campaign to fund construc-
tion of a new building that will combine eleven critical assistance programs, including medical and dental clinics, food pantry, and Clothes Closet, in one location. The organization’s current facilities at three separate locations with severely limited space are

no longer adequate to provide the high level of care for Goochland individuals and families in need. In 2016, GFCFS services provided services for over 1,700 Goochland residents. Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services and the Capital Campaign will support the construction of a 20,000 square foot building on the current site of the Family Services’ offices at 3001 River Road West as well as conversion of the existing
main building into emergency housing. This central site was chosen to make it easier for clients to access all services. In addition, there is $1.5 million endowment included in the campaign to ensure the future of the organization and the services it offers. Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services is a non-profit organization that provides access to health care and basic human services to Goochland residents in need. For more information, visit
www.GoochlandFreeClinicA ndFamilyServices.org or find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/gfcfs. Based in Richmond, The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation was founded in 1988 by Mrs. Mary Morton Parsons as a private, non-operating foundation to support the capital needs of charitable organizations. The Foundation typically issues between $3-5 million annually in grants to support capital projects, mostly on a challenge or match-
ing basis. The Foundation has found that matching grants help organizations raise additional gifts they may not have otherwise received, thus leveraging the impact of the grant to benefit worthy causes. To date, the Foundation has awarded approximately $73 million to qualified grantees. For more information about supporting GFCFS, or the ALL. HERE. NOW. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Sometimes, country life doesn’t smell like a rose By Roslyn Ryan Editor
If you were to ask me how my weekend was — and I were to answer you honestly — I would probably sum it up in three words: it stunk. Literally. The reason I say this is because over the weekend my two beloved dogs — a big black lab and a chubby little black and white mutt — both learned a valuable lesson about which wild animals they can mess with and which they can’t. And into the latter category, as my whole family can now attest, go skunks. They both got sprayed, with the little one taking a direct hit in the face. Believe me when I say that there are few less pleasant things to find outside your back door:,a deranged, Swamp Thing, perhaps? than two dogs enveloped in a full-on haze of
fresh skunk spray. Yes, of all the things I have come to enjoy about living in the country, I think I will probably put skunks near the very bottom. I would leave them off the list entirely, but, to be fair, it certainly isn’t their fault they smell. Plus, they were here first, so I generally just try to give them a wide berth when I do see them, which isn’t often. Given that it s January, I was kind of surprised that my dogs managed to find one at all, but find one they did. They didn t seem to mind the smell too much I think the little one was even kind of proud of himself but to every human within 20 feet of them the smell could only be described as apocalyptic. Just as an aside, 2017 was supposed to be the year that I finally embraced foods high in vitamins and minerals.

Trouble on the big yellow bird? Now it’s serious! By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
In a workweek that began with an airing of a $180 million budget followed by a hearing on a $20 million road project the next evening, my head was full of facts and figures by Wednesday, Jan. 25. All important issues, no doubt, but the most intriguing story of
the week broke right before my eyes in my own house. There’s trouble on Bus #197! I’ve changed the number of the actual bus in an effort to protect the innocent and not overly shame the guilty. In a nation divided, it seems like partisan politics has entered the last bastion of political free discussion, and a nasty argument

has reared its ugly head. Now, I was painfully unaware that something called school bus politics exist, but apparently there’s a power structure on the big yellow bird that’s not easily dismantled, or messed with. Let me explain. On the middle school bus, the prime seating is in the rear section of the bus, farthest away from the
watchful eye of the driver. It’s sort of the same theory that allows some students to pick the back seats in class. In this case, however, the eighth-graders have defended their position occupying the rear seats on the bus for most of the first half of the school year. see Bus politics > 7

Letter to the Editor An open letter about the ‘community cat’ population of county Dear Editor, We are your neighbors and we have decided to take our concerns about community cats to you, our fellow residents of Goochland. We have come to realize that there is a huge population of cats that seem to generate little or no human interest other than trying to ignore or eradicate them. You may have heard of them referred to as community cats or ferals, and no matter where you go, you have seen them. These cats are just like the ones you have at home, except not as lucky. Someone human dropped the ball somewhere along the way for these cats. Until recently, Goochland County had taken mainly a traditional approach when addressing the ferals of Goochland. That approach, trap and often euthanize, has done little to decrease the feral population. In fact, there is evidence to support that once a colony has been removed another one quickly moves in to take its place. Because of recent changes to state statues, we hope that the times are changing for the better for ferals in Goochland. We are a small but committed group of Goochland citizens who volunteer our time and resources to help as many community cats as we can, but we need your help, because there are a lot of cats in Goochland that still need our help. Our goal is to TNR (trap, neuter, and return) as many cats as we can. Our volunteers take these cats to either a local vet or a more cost effective clinic, such as the Richmond SPCA or P.A.L.S., both in Richmond, to have them examined and neutered. We also give them rabies shots to make their return back into their comsee Letter > page 7

Bus politics continued from >6 But, recently, some seventh-graders, and even sixthgraders have challenged the status quo, going so far as to plop down on the best of the rear seats before the upper classmen even embark on the bus. Now it’s hard to determine just how good my information is, but I am told that the bus driver sides with the upper classmen, but, officially, has little say in the matter. There was something missing in the story, but I couldn’t put my investigative finger on it, and I had those pesky million dollar stories and a budget to dissect when not working on the bus upheaval. And then I heard a conversation that provided invaluable

tinue to be cared for and fed on a daily basis. As you can imagine, this takes a lot of time and money, but most of all commitment. E feel like it is a goal worthy of commitment. We believe if Goochland

clues to just how this revolution began, how a small group of sixth-graders just weren’t going to take any more. It seems an eighth-grader allowed a seventh-grader to sit in the rear section, a sort of reward for a chosen few that never included sixth-graders. But, the underlings perceived this act of kindness as a sign of weakness, and they pounced into seats almost reserved by tradition ‌ but no more. Now, some readers will side with the sixth-graders, and others will understand how the eighth-graders feel. And, I’d like to tell you my investigation provided a happy ending. Truth is, the uprising is ongoing with some eighthgraders dribbling back into
the rear sections, and there’s more jockeying at the bus stop when the bus approaches. An inside source informs me that direct face-to-face negotiations have not been productive, and some gestures have been met with less than courteous responses. “Those sixth-graders are so immature, my 12-year old source said. I suppose this could be described as a learning experience, but it also might have all the signs of a familiar looking standoff between traditionalists and those looking for change. What that lesson is I haven’t a clue, but I never imagined the discontent of a divided nation would spill onto the big yellow bird.

Bulldogs unable to ‘finish’ game against Powhatan By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It was a game of attrition between Goochland and Powhatan’s girls basketball teams on Jan. 30 at Powhatan. The lead changed hands or was tied 23 times throughout the matchup. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, there was no 24th as they fell 38-35 to
the Indians. “We performed well,” coach James Harris said. “Basically, it’s just finishing, closing the game out. Our girls have come a long ways from where we started. So, we played really well.” Goochland had multiple chances within the last minute of play to sink the would-be tying or potentially winning shot. After Powhatan’s Kylee Maiolo sank
a three-point shot to give the Indians the three-point lead, Goochland’s Victoria Lopez was able to steal the ball on an ensuing Powhatan possession and dished it to Blake Thomas. But, Thomas lost the handle and it went back to the Indians. The Bulldogs were in the position where they needed to foul, and they did, sending Katie Coates to the line. Gerow missed her one-and-one
chance with 24.2 seconds remaining in the game. Goochland rebounded the missed free throw and pushed it up the court, where Thomas attempted a three-point shot that would have tied the game. But, Thomas was off the mark and Powhatan regained possession. The Bulldogs then sent Clare Gerow to the foul line, who also missed her one-and-one chance with
10.8 seconds remaining. Goochland rebounded, but turned the ball back over to the Indians. In the scramble for the ball, Maiolo was called for a foul and Goochland gained possession with around six seconds remaining. The inbounds pass was right by the Goochland bench and the ball see Bulldogs> 9

Roundup: Twombley organizes ‘Ballin’ for Cancer’ By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland boys basketball player Jack Twombly lost his mother due to pancreatic cancer in November, a tragedy that was felt throughout the community. But, Twombly was inspired to keep the fight against cancer going and has organized the “Ballin’ for a Cure” benefit game which will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday at Goochland. The game is the culmination of a week-long Cancer Awareness Week at Goochland from Jan. 30 through Feb. 3, with each day being dedicated to a different kind of cancer. In the three months after his mother’s passing, Twombly has raised over $800 to purchase T-shirts which will be sold to commemorate the event. The event has drawn in local business donations from State Farm Insurance of Goochland, Goochland Pharmacy, Subway of Goochland, The Goochland Restaurant, Courthouse Market and Pizza, Hickory Notch Grill and Parrish Ford, in addition to private donors. At the game on Feb. 3, Goochland will donate half of the ticket sales from the game to the cause. Virginia Commonwealth University basketball coach Will Wade had donated a signed basketball that

While Goochland was resilient in its multiple attempts to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs had some missed opportu-
will be raffled off as well as a Los Angeles Clippers jersey signed by Chris Paul. The Paul jersey was arranged to be donated by the former Vice President for Basketball Operations for the Clippers and Richmond resident Kevin Eastman. All proceeds from the raffle and Tshirt sales as well as the ticket sales will go to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. This season, Twombly has led the Goochland boys basketball team to a 13-5 record, averaging over 15 points and 11 rebounds per game. On Jan. 27, the Bulldogs defeated Central Lunenburg 42-29. Deion Harwood led Goochland that night with 18 points, while Twombly had six. On Jan. 24, the Bulldogs fell to Nottoway 56-49. Harwood led Goochland with 19 points, including five three-point shots. Twombly had 15 points.
WRESTLING At the James River District wrestling championships, Goochland finished fifth out of six teams with a team score of 111, trailing Nottoway’s 196, Randolph-Henry’s 157, Cumberland’s 135 and Amelia’s 119. The Bulldogs did place wrestlers on the podium, however. Brian Herrera won the 182-pound weight class by pin over Cumberland’s
nities earlier in the game. Powhatan sent the Bulldogs to the line five times in the first half, but Goochland was only four-for-10 from the stripe. Goochland at one point led by nine points, but a 6-0 run by the Indians at the end of the second quarter let Powhatan go into halftime leading by one. The Bulldogs outscored Powhatan 6-4 in the third quarter to go into the final frame leading by one point. Then, the see-saw game truly

Raheem Rumsey. Herrera advanced to face Rumsey after pinning Nottoway’s Johnny Eddy in the semifinals. Goochland’s Cody Nash was the district runner-up in the 106 weight class, falling by pin to Hunter Morgan of Nottoway. At the 132 class, Joshua Hobbs
also was the runner-up in the district. He fell by a decision to Nottoway’s Giovanny Gonzalez. Goochland’s Daniel Thompson advanced to the final in the 138 weight class with a decision win over Chandler Newcomb of RandolphHenry, but fell to Andrew Ford of Amelia in the final.
Dalton Fitzgerald and Gus Payne both finished third in the 120 and 220 weight classes, respectively. Brandon Card was fourth at 152 and Hunter McKinney, Alexander Thompson and Cooper Thrasher all finished in fifth place. Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@ powhatantoday.com.
began. Maiolo hit a pair of free throws to start the quarter and was answered by a basket by Gonzalez. Powhatan’s Maggie Salomonsky hit a three-pointer to give the Indians a brief two-point lead before Taylor sank a layup to tie the game. Salomonsky was sent to the line and made one of her pair of free throws, followed by two missed free throws by Shelby Hodge. Then, Gonzalez hit a basket to give the Bulldogs a one point edge,
which was answered by Powhatan’s Katie Henderson to put the Indians back ahead. Gonzalez made one of two free throws to tie the game before Maiolo hit her eventual game-winning threepoint shot. Gonzalez led the Bulldogs with 20 points. “She got rebounds and a lot of put-backs,” Harris said. “She’s a big reason we were able to stay in the game. She was a key factor for the night.”
While the loss was a set back for the Bulldogs, Harris said he believes the experience of going against a Group 4A school like Powhatan and only lose by three points will be a boost for his squad. “Playing a team like that, a higher school, and only losing by three points, that’s pretty good,” he said. “I got a young team, a very young team.” Goochland concluded their regular season at home on Jan. 31 against Bluestone.
