Performance brings story of Emmett Till to new audience By Roslyn Ryan Editor

“I certainly didn’t think I would end up as a priest,” said Dunevant, whose previous professional experience included years in the fundraising and marketing world. But she couldn’t help but notice that the people she looked up

In honor of Black History Month, Goochland resident Sekou Shabaka will be staging a performance of his play “Even the Devil Wept for Emmett Till” at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Goochland High School. Shabaka said he wrote the play in an effort to educate those who may not know — or may not understand — the impact Till’s 1955 murder had on the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement. Till, a black 14-year-old born and raised in Chicago, was visiting family in Mississippi when he was abducted and murdered for allegedly making inappropriate advances towards a white man’s wife. The two men accused of the killing, one of whom was the woman’s husband, were quickly acquitted by an all-white jury, though they later boasted of having committed the murder. Wanting the public to see what had been done to her son, Till’s mother Mamie insisted that his badly mutilated body be displayed in an open casket, allowing an estimated 100,000 people to see him. An image taken that day was printed in Jet Magazine, igniting outrage nationwide. To Shabaka, who has penned plays on the lives of other prominent black figures including Henry “Box” Brown and Nat Turner, retelling stories like Till’s helps ensure that they are not left out of the historical record. “It’s a tragic story, but it has to be told,” Shabaka said. Rather than try to gloss over tragic events like Till’s murder, Shabaka hopes people will under-

Grace Episcopal priest says new church already feels like home By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Dunevant

To Grace Episcopal Church priest Rev. Emily Dunevant, being in a house of worship has always brought a sense of peace and contentment. Growing up, “church was always a

central part of my life,” said Dunevant. It was a place of support and friendship. I loved going and look back on my early years in church with gratitude. That said, Dunevant admits with a laugh that even she was a bit surprised when she felt the call to enter religious life.

For former county administrator, a loving tribute

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As the hundreds of people made their way into the Goochland High School auditorium last Sunday to honor the memory of former Goochland County Administrator Becky Dickson, it was clear that the

Priest continued from >1 to the most were leaders in the church. Dunevant said she still didn’t intend to enter the priesthood when she began her studies at New York’s Union Theological Seminary in 2007. What she did know, however, was that she wanted to have a strong grounding in her Christian faith. Her experience at seminary was just the start of a journey that would lead her first to the University of Richmond, where she served for six years in the Office of the Chaplaincy as the Director of Multifaith Initiatives. There she worked with students of many different faiths, taking international trips to sites of religious significance and hosting discussions on current events.

Shabaka continued from >1 stand that they are all a part of the American story. “History is not a straight line, it’s more like a wave,” Shabaka said. “Sometimes before it comes up, it has to

memorial service would not be an entirely somber affair. Projected onto a screen above the stage was a slideshow of photos marking joyful moments in Dickson’s life, underscoring the joy she had experienced spending time and traveling with friends and family. There was Dickson with her beloved daughter Sarah, and taking in the sites at Machu Picchu. There she was at a casino, and on her wedding day. Those who shared their memories of Dickson, who died on Jan. 18 after battling can-

cer for several years, did their best, sometimes through tears, to sum up what she had meant to them. A beloved mother, daughter, sister, wife and friend, Dickson “gave us many gifts, and how she made us all feel was one of them,” said Goochland Dickson County supervisor Bob Minnick, describing her as humble, kind, creative, brave and capable.

It was a fascinating position, Dunevant said, and one that she relished, but she still couldn’t escape the sense that she was being called to serve as a leader in the church. Once again, despite some uncertainty, she forged ahead. Fortunately, “the Episcopal Church has a wonderful process for helping people identify which path is the right one for them, and it gives you time to discern your gifts and interests,” said Dunevant. It took four years to complete the ordination process, but by the time she was finished Dunevant said she knew without a doubt she had made the right choice. Just over six months after taking the position at Grace Episcopal, her very first parish, she says it feels like the perfect fit.

“I love going to work each day,” said Dunevant. “The members of Grace describe themselves as a family and I think that is very accurate. The joy for me is that I got to walk into a church family that is committed to serving God and the Goochland community -- and you can’t get much better than that.” As Dunevant begins her ministry at Grace she is working to build more opportunities for bible study, youth programs, and community outreach. “It’s an exciting time for us to grow our ministry and become an even more active partner in our community.” To learn more about Grace Church, visit the church’s website at www.gracechurchgoochland.org. Services are held at 9 a.m. and 11a.m. every Sunday.

go way low.” When it comes to accuracy, he said, “You have to keep working and make a commitment to honor what is fair and what is right.” Tickets for “Even the Devil Wept for Emmett Till” are $10 for adults and free for those 18 and under. They can be

purchased at the door on the day of the show, or in advance by contacting Shabaka at (804) 457-2374, Wendy Hobbs at (804) 556-6693, or Rev. Adlai C. Allen at revacallen@gmail. com. Goochland High School is located at 3250 River Road.

Dickson’s husband, Dennis Proffitt, described his late wife as “an angel,” and urged all who knew her to carry on her legacy of love and kindness. The service, which also featured the songs “Believe” by Brooks and Dunn and “When I’m Gone” by Joey and Rory, had been organized by Dickson herself, a fact that likely surprised few who had worked with her.

A capable and detailed planner, she had specified shortly before her death that she didn’t want “and funeral stuff,” Proffitt said. To those who knew Dickson, the outpouring of both laughter and tears seen on Sunday was a fitting tribute to a woman who touched so many lives. Said her sister, Deborah Starnes, “She was the best of all of us.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Can a country be both safe and merciful? By Roslyn Ryan Editor

“It’s not doing what is right that’s hard for a President. It’s knowing what is right.” — Lyndon Johnson Though polls suggest that nearly half of all Americans agree with — or at least support — President Donald Trump’s recent executive order concerning, among other things, refugees from war-ravaged Syria, outcry over his action has been difficult to ignore. It should probably surprise no one at this point that President Trump is not one to check which

way the political winds are blowing before making decisions. So it also shouldn t have come as much of a shock that his latest move flies in the face of both tradition and the advice of those who have made diplomacy their lives work. But while many voices on both sides of the aisle —and internationally — have been decrying Trump’s ban on Syrian refugees, I will not lend my voice to that chorus. Instead, as someone who has worked with refugees in the past, I will simply offer a few words on their behalf. I would assume that President Trump has at least a rudimentary understanding of just what the peo-

ple of Syria are fleeing, the desperate lengths to which they are willing to go to get out, and the future that awaits them if they are not permitted a safe haven. I would hope that he has had the chance to meet some of these families, to see that they love their own children as much as he loves his, that many of them are as educated, intelligent and industrious as he is, and that they are asking nothing more than for an opportunity to raise their families in a country that isn’t collapsing all around them. If the system, as House Speaker Paul Ryan said, is broken, then do what needs to be done to fix it. No one is asking for a less safe country.

But also please remember that so much of what has made our country great over that past 100 years — and indeed long before that — has been the dedication, sweat, ingenuity and patriotism of those who came here from somewhere else, many seeking the same protection that citizens of Syria are begging for now. I’m going to give our President the benefit of the doubt on this one. He is keeping a promise to those who elected him, and his efforts, misguided as they may seem to some of us, are not without precedent. I simply hope that, in our quest to remain watchful, we have not forgotten what it means to be merciful.

Mass transit: Giving credit where credit is due By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

I treasure the vivid memories I have as a child catching the street car at the District Line in Washington and taking the streetcar to Griffith Stadium to watch the Senators. It was an era of the streetcar’s last gasp, and I distinctly remember riding my final time on my first trip to RFK Stadium, then called DC Stadium. As a teenager, I remember dodging the annoying streetcar rails on

Monument Avenue coupled with centuries-old bricks that made the drive hazardous at best. I’m not sure how much is left of Richmond’s Electric Trolley system, but the story of how the city landed the first motorized commercial streetcar system in the United States is one seldom associated with the city’s colorful and abundant history. Frank Julian Sprague was a Naval Academy graduate from Connecticut who friends described as a man who couldn’t sit still.

After completing a commission in the Navy, Sprague began working with Thomas Edison, designing motors to power his nationally emerging electrical power system. Edison’s assistant quickly outgrew the mentor when it came to electrical motors. Sprague had a new design that strengthened and increased power, opening a myriad of possible industrial uses for the new technology. But, Sprague had a vision of using his invention to power a bustling horse-drawn streetcar business

in major American cities. The young inventor feared that Edison would claim his latest innovations as his own, but worked secretly on his unique electric motor. In 1884, Sprague resigned from his $2,500 a year job with Edison and launched his trolley car venture, with little success at the beginning. Early prototypes evoked more doubt than confidence in the new see Mass transit > 7

Sometimes, just sometimes, when all the kids are grown, educated and you no longer, from desire or need, relentlessly pursue the means to have what you want, a liberating understanding of purpose illuminates your mind forever as you realize you now truly want what you have. Purpose is a road weaving in and out of our lives, rarely traveled in a straight or unbroken line, its constant change or destination not made clear until one nears the journey’s end. In 1993, while shopping in a large hardware store in Northern Virginia, I was walking past end caps, looking down each long aisle, when I noticed a tall man at the far end looking directly into my eyes. Transfixed for a few moments, I watched him turn and begin to walk away, but then he backstepped into the center of the aisle. In that same instant, we recognized each other! In the time it took to walk the 60 feet to reach him, my memory was jolted back 30 years in time, flashing vivid scenes, colors and audio effects like some form of dysfunctional instant replay. In the dead of night, torrential, tropical rains and ankle deep mud made it hard to move or run. Mortar rounds were exploding, small arms fire cracking from the perimeter of the ammo dump, and shrapnel cutting through vehicles, tents, and a tall soldier caught in the open. The captain, my CO, hit in both legs after moving his men to safety, sank slowly to his knees. Without thought, I ran to catch him at the waist as he fell forward. I lifted him see Marching home > page 12

Mass transit continued from >6 emerging technology, and Sprague’s fledgling company was on its last leg when a contract arrived from an unlikely source, the City of Richmond, Virginia. The agreement posed little risk for local investors whose confidence was backed by an almost money-back guarantee. Sprague received no money for the project until its completion and successful demonstration. The beleaguered Yankee spent $75,000 of his money to complete the project, a 23-mile line with four electric-powered cars, called trolleys because they were linked to overhead lines called trollers.

The challenging terrain and numerous inclines of Richmond tested the newly constructed electric cars and Spague tweaked his design to increase power. On a warm July night somewhere around 18th Street, Spague lined up 22 trolleys and powered them up the steep hill all at once. The demonstration was enough to convince Henry Whitney, the nation’s most powerful mass transit owner, that Sprague’s plan would work in large cities like Boston. From those humble beginnings, mass transit became the order of the day in large cities across America. Whitney took Sprague’s trolleys back to Boston and constructed a

major system of motorized mass transit. For Sprague, it was only the beginning of a long career of numerous inventions, most involving his electric motor. He proceeded to modernize the elevator industry with his powerful motors and is credited with starting the Otis Elevator Company. His fear of Edison’s ego proved correct, and Edison Electric Company bought Sprague’s Trolley Car Company, and quickly replaced Sprague’s name with Edison on most of the streetcar motors. But, history got it right, and Sprague is credited with changing the face of mass transit in the United States. His motor became the worldwide standard for trolleys and streetcars. Sprague’s system served the city well until the last streetcar made its way to Highland Park in December 1949. His legacy lives on in the numerous inventions created, and his electric motor changed the way our nation developed and prospered. And it all started right in Richmond.

Goochland’s fans came out in droves for the Ballin’ for a Cure event on Feb. 3 at Goochland High School. Ticket sales and proceeds from the purple T-shirts, many of which the students we wearing in the stands, all went toward cancer research as part of the week-long event organized by Jack Twombly.

Goochland’s gym packed for Ballin’ for a Cure By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Never underestimate the power of a mother’s love. Goochland senior forward Jack Twombly plays hard all the time, and his teammates will tell you he competes with 100 percent effort from start to finish. But, when Goochland took

the floor for a benefit game last week against Maggie Walker, Twombly’s performance was all that and something else — inspired. The result was a 54-43 victory as the Bulldogs ended regular season play. A packed house showed its collective appreciation and support for Jack, his twin brother and father John as

they cope with a devastating loss. The support of a community doesn’t make the loss any easier, but it never hurts to have hundreds of friends show up to display encouragement and compassion. Twombly’s mother Joan, fought a gallant battle with pancreatic cancer last year, and the senior’s teammates and coaches joined in the fight with

support and love. Last season, the team presented Joan with a game ball after a win in her honor. Joan lost her battle last November, and her memory was still fresh in the minds of the Goochland team when the season began last year. They felt their teammate’s pain. When the deadline approached for senior proj-

ect ideas, Trombly and project partner A.J. Austin devised a plan to raise awareness regarding a disease that had affected his family, and so many others in the community. Goochland students supported that project and recognized last week as Cancer Awareness Week, hosting events noted various types of the disease on given days of the

weeklong project. “We’ve had the students wear different colors each day to represent the five different types of cancer that have affected people on the basketball team’s lives,” Twombly said. “We made posters with the facts and statistics so everyone could see and learn. It see Benefit> 9

Roundup: Benedictine, Goochland players sign NLIs By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Athletes at both Benedictine and Goochland got the chance that many high school athletes dream of, putting pen to paper and signing their National Letter Intent. Benedictine had a large class of seniors sign their letters, led by linebacker Ellis Brooks who committed to play football at Penn State. Taurus Carroll, a cornerback, signed for the defending NCAA

Division I Football Championship Series champions James Madison University Dukes. Dean Ngendakuriyo, another corner for the Cadets, will head to West Point. Safety/linebacker Ty Cloyd will stay in state and head to Virginia Military Institute. Graham Flinn, a free safety and punt returner for the Cadets signed in the Ivy League with Columbia. For the Bulldogs, two of their key pieces from their successful run this

year signed for their next level play as well. Cordell Mattox and Calvin Martin both signed their NLIs on Signing Day as well. Mattox will join Carroll at James Madison, while Martin will head south to the University of Charleston. Mattox was the Conference 34 defensive player of the year this season as well as first team All-Group 2A and first team All-Metro. Martin was also a first team All-

Group 2A selection and was honorable mention All-Metro.

GIRLS BASKETBALL After a heartbreaking loss to Powhatan on Jan. 30, the Bulldogs bounced back with a 56-22 win over Bluestone on Jan. 31. Goochland’s girls basketball team finished the regular season with a 715 record. The team will travel to Brunswick today for the first round of the Conference 34 tournament as the No. 6 seed.

SWIMMING The Goochland boys and girls swim teams competed in the Region 2A East meet on Feb. 4. Goochland’s girls finished with 17.5 points, behind Madison County’s 26 and ahead of East Rockingham’s 17. The boys team scored 21 points, ahead of Prince Edward’s 16 and just behind Madison County’s 24. Both teams had swimmers qualify for the Group 2A state meet on Feb. 15 at Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Benefit continued from >8 was a great week and everyone came together.” Ballin for a Cure was the final episode of the week-long awareness campaign, a benefit game with Maggie Walker with proceeds headed to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Jack’s dad John said the Bulldog family has been a positive part of the healing process for his family. “This community has been nothing but supportive for our entire family throughout this whole ordeal,” he said following the benefit. “The coaches, the teammates, the community —they’re the best.” Joan was Jack’s biggest fan, and you might think her absence in the stands is a constant reminder of the loss, but the senior gets his inspiration from a spirit that is always there for him — his mother’s memory. “She’s always there for me,” he said. “She’s still here for me and I feel her presence every time I take this court.” That inspiration reached industrial strength levels as Twombly began the game on a torrid pace scoring 10 of the Bulldogs first 13 points, and leading the team to a 12-3 early lead. But Walker didn’t quit, and pulled within three at the half, and took an early second half 25-23 lead. The

Bulldogs responded and downed the pesky visitors 54-43. “They were a tough team — really disciplined,” Twombly said after the game. “We needed the win against a good team like that. We rallied as a team to finish the game.”

Twombly finished the game with 22 points and 10 rebounds as Goochland finishes the regular season with a 17-5 record and a second place finish in the James River District. The Bulldogs host a home playoff game this Thursday against

After the game, Twombly’s thoughts turned to a familiar subject. “She was so strong and so brave,” Twombly said. Goochland coach Preston Gordon said the effort was inspirational to the team, especially those who have been

touched by cancer. That includes several player and coaches’ families. Gordon said the response to the efforts were memorable. “It was a great night,” Gordon said. “This is one of the best crowds I’ve ever seen in here.”

Marching home continued from >6 across my back and shoulders. Captain Johnathan MacDonald, respected by all and known affectionately as “Captain Johnny Mac”, was so long and tall I could feel his fingertips touching the heels of my boots as his weight pushed me ever deeper into the mud. Struggling, exhausted, moving toward a secured area, I managed to return fire with my free hand. I soon felt the helping hands of medics grabbing my shoulders and pulling the captain to a stretcher on the soaked ground.

These amazing soldiers stopped the bleeding and in a minute carried the captain away while under heavy enemy fire. Captain Johnny Mac managed to grab my sleeve and uttered a breathless, “Thank you Sergeant, get me home.” He was whisked away, one arm falling out limply to the side of the stretcher. I never saw or heard from him again; I thought he had died that night in the rain. Yet now, this moment, I was looking into the smiling eyes of Captain Johnny Mac as he hugged me so hard I was lifted off my feet. The rest of the conversation was

a blur. He survived! He was married; had two kids. He was the store manager and being transferred out of state that very week. We would keep in touch. Hard to share or explain these emotions with my beautiful wife, the love of my life, who had not yet been born until one year past what was then my world. Perhaps that time served a purpose after all? Late in 2016, I learned that a very special member of my unit was being laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery making me the last surviving member. The honor guard for Captain Johnny Mac, dressed in formal Army

As I turned to leave, the voice of a young woman interrupted my thoughts, speaking quietly, “You must be him; the young Sergeant,” she said. “His young Sergeant?” Before I could answer, she went on to say, “My name is Margaret.
