Supervisors laud Hopkins for service to community By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland resident Calvin Hopkins is a busy man. But, on the evening of May 3, he was forced to slow down long enough to be honored by the county board of supervisors for his dedication to the community and to be named to the Goochland Parks and Recreation Wall of Fame. Both honors, it would seem, were well-earned. In addition to volunteering for causes such as the Goochland Recreation Center, Meals on Wheels, and Habitat for Humanity, he has served as a student mensee Hopkins > 4

Extra Ordinary After three decades, Goochland’s Tanglewood Ordinary remains the go-to for down home, family-style fare By Roslyn Ryan Editor
W
hen Jim and Anne Hardwick opened Goochland’s Tanglewood Ordinary in 1986, they knew they wanted to create the kind of place they had fallen in love with in and around Jim’s hometown of Salem: wonderful service, delicious food, and the kind of welcoming atmosphere that instantly made customers feel at home. Now, three decades later, it appears they have succeeded. On a warm spring night several weeks ago, around 5 p.m., the first customers of the evening began rolling into the parking lot of the blink-and-you’ll-missit building tucked off to the side of Route 6. One young couple (possibly lured by a recent Yelp review that started with the words “Holy Moly!” and lauded the restaurant’s food with language usually reserved for religious experiences) looked wide-eyed around the large dining room that has looked much the same for the last
30 years. In fact, said Anne, these days the restaurant is actually serving its third generation of customers, those whose grandparents first started coming in back when Tanglewood was one of Goochland’s very few eating establishments. “One thing that so many people tell us is that they appreciate the fact that they can go away for a while, come back, and Tanglewood is here just as they remember it,” said Anne. While a new, hot dining “consee Tanglewood > 3

Schwartz continued from >1 Beginning on May 20, he will be taking the stage in the comedy “Don’t Cry For Me Margaret Mitchell,” at Richmond’s CAT Theatre. The show is based on the period leading up to the 1939 release of the movie Gone with the Wind, when producer David O. Selznick realizes — in the middle of filming — that the script needs to be rewritten. Schwartz’s character, screenwriter Ben Hecht, is chosen to save the production, but is soon forced to admit he has never read the book. With only a week in which to rewrite the script, Selznick locks himself in his office with Hecht and the director in a desperate attempt to get the job finished. For Schwartz, playing the role of Hecht has been both
exciting and challenging. “It’s very cool, but kind of nervewracking since it means being on stage the entire time,” he said. As he works toward his goal of earning his living as an actor full-time (Schwartz currently spends his days as working as a Fraud Prevention Specialist for Capital One), Schwartz says he’s happy to have been given the opportunity to showcase his skills. He also doesn’t seem to mind that he hasn’t made it out to Hollywood just yet. “If you have a goal, and it’s something you love, you just have to keep doing it,” he said. The CAT Theatre’s production of “Don’t Cry For Me Margaret Mitchell” runs from May 20 to June 4. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit www.cattheatre. com or call 804-262-9760.

‘Drug Take Back’ event a success Contributed report
Recently, the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office held a “Drug Take Back Day,” from in the lobby of the sheriff’s office. It is not unusual for households to have unused and, or unneeded prescription drugs in the medicine cabinet or a bathroom closet. Kids and teenagers know this. Burglars know this. These medications can be as deadly and destructive when misused, as they are helpful when used as they were intended. Rates of
prescription drug abuse are terribly high in the United States. There is also the issues of overdoses and accidental poisonings. Flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in landfills pollutes our water supplies. The “Drug Take Back” Program is a safe efficient solution. The Drug Enforcement Agency has headed up these drug takeback programs all over the United States, hosting more than 5,000 events. Local police, state police and sheriff agencies hosted more
than 3,800 additional sites. Together they collected 350 tons (702,000 pounds) of prescription pills last September (2015). In the 10 Take Back events since its inception, over 5.5 million pounds (2,700 tons) of pills have been collected and destroyed nationwide. The bi-annual event has been successful in Powhatan County and the Office will continue to host it each year to highlight the problems of see Drug take back > 17

They have also updated equipment and made adjustments over the years where they were needed. But the one thing that hasn’t changed — and will never change, Jim says — is their focus on their customers. “At the end of the day, we are in business to make people happy,” he said. “To me, the three best things you can hear as someone is leaving your restaurant are ‘Wow, what a wonderful meal. Wow, I’m coming back. And, wow, I’m telling my friends.’” Over the years, many of their customers have continued to come back again and again, drawn in part by food they say reminds them of eating at their grandmother’s table. “I just love everything about it,” said Richmond resident Ronnie Drake, a loyal Tanglewood customer for many years. These days, like many other “regulars,” Drake has Jim’s cell phone number and will call in advance just to make sure the kitchen is serving his favorites — black-eyed peas and stewed tomatoes — and he usually doesn’t come alone. Lane honored for tireless work on behalf of students By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Just as we were going to press last week, we here at the Gazette received the wonderful news that Dr. James Lane, superintendent of Goochland County Public Schools, had been named this year’s Virginia Superintendent of the Year. We’re not going to say we were surprised — Lane, after all, has spent the last three years working tirelessly on behalf of the county’s students and has implemented numerous successful programs to enhance the educational experience offered in Goochland County Public Schools. What’s particularly nice to see, however, is that the work he has done has gained such acclaim so far outside the region. The students and teachers of Goochland have already seen the benefit of his leadership, but Lane also has set a tremendous example for other localities to follow. We will certainly be sad to see Lane go later this year, when he takes on the superintendent’s role in Chesterfield. As more and more people have been finding out, we’ve been lucky to have him. *** All I really need to know about

politics, I’ve learned from this year’s presidential hopefuls ... When in doubt, yell. Still in doubt? Yell louder. If you liked the idea, it was mine. You didn’t like it? It was his. Shove. Use baroque language and opaque metaphors sparingly — and by “sparingly” I mean constantly. The most scientific, unassailably accurate polling results are the ones that validate what you’ve been saying this whole time. All the other polls were clearly conducted by idiots. Be memorable … even if it is for something ridiculous. Be sincere … while the cameras are rolling. Stay on message … even when that message is totally, utterly, factually incorrect. You don’t have to have read the Bible to quote it liberally. Courtesy and respect are the absolute best qualities to possess if you want to have a decent shot at second place. Always remember: Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Convince a majority of people that the man didn’t deserve that fish, that he took it from someone who did, and that he’s a lazy drug addict/criminal/ terrorist, and you just might win an election.

A road trip with my mother By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
A
s I stood and watched my mother standing in front of my father’s coffin on Christmas Day 1959, I couldn’t help but wonder, “What’s going to happen to us now?” Supported on each side by my father’s brothers, she looked small and devastated. In fact, it was the worst of situations for a 9-year--old boy who idolized his dad. My sister, mother and I depended on him for everything, and it all changed within a matter of hours.
As a 9-year-old, I didn’t realize, or couldn’t recognize the strength that lay in that small frame, or the pure grit and determination that drove her from that sad moment forward. For months, we huddled together and cried, and it sure ly
seemed that nothing would ever return to normal. We missed him more each day. After months of misery, my mother awoke one day and announced she was going to work ... and she did. Starting as a secretary for the Defense Department, she worked her way up and eventually landed a job as a buyer. And, we did something else to end our period of isolation and confusion. We hit the road. A few years after she began work, she traded in our old 1955 Chevrolet on a new 1962 Bel Air and promptly packed up the car and headed to Southern Florida to visit relatives and tour the area. She drove us all the way down and taxied us to all the attractions, including a newly formed theme park called Sea World. We visited Thomas Edison’s summer home in Fort Myers and glared with amazement through glass bottom boats at Silver Springs. We followed up that trip with a Christmas escape to Montgomery, Alabama, my hometown and a familiar respite for my sister and me. We spent the holidays with see Road Trip > 7
Letter to the Editor Sale of paper poppies will help support those who serve our country Dear Editor, “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses row on row…” is a line from the famous poem “In Flanders Fields,” by Lt. Col. John McCrae. It doesn’t matter that this poem was written in 1915 during World War I, the sentiment and sacrifice of our Military remains the same today. Memorial Day is the day Americans set aside to honor those brave men and women who met tragic end dur-
ing times of war. Have you seen their faces, heard their names, and maybe even heard their voices? We must never forget them. Abraham Lincoln promised that we shall “care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan.” How do you keep Lincoln’s promise to our veterans and their families? The donations collected by the Legion and Auxiliary members in exchange for a red paper poppy is one way. One hundred percent of these donations are used to support active duty military, veterans and their families. American Legion and Auxiliary
members will be out in May collecting donations for the poppies. Look for us in Goochland, at the Oilville Exxon, at WaWa, at Cabela’s and at the Courthouse Green during the Memorial Day Ceremony. If you miss us, contact a veteran or stop by the Post building the 3rd Tuesday evening of the month. The Post Hall is located at 3386 River Road in Goochland. This July, her work will be featured at the Goochland Library. A former interior designer and award-winning art teacher, Shulleeta describes her work as whimsical, energetic and calming. “I love art, and I often try to create art that really enlivens folks’ senses,” Shulleeta said. “The best art can reach deep into a person’s spirit and appeal to a person’s wildest imagination or deepest feelings of joy. That’s the type of art that someShulleeta one can hang on a wall, examine a thousand times and gain positive energy from the art everytime.” Shulleeta uses spirited, vivid colors in her paintings, many of which portray flowers, angels, local barns and churches. “When successful, my art is capable of calling up intense feelings,” Shulleeta said, “because nature has an organic ability to affect people’s emotions. And I always use colors that provoke happiness, energy and relaxation.” Shulleeta has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and earned nationally accredited teaching qualifications from the University of Richmond. continued from >6 family, and remembered my father with his many relatives who lived there. Now, it may seem completely normal for a young mother to travel long distances with children these days, but in the 1960s it was unusual. That began a long line of road trips with my mother. Trips to the New York World’s Fair, Long Island, Rock City and a list of other destinations too numerous to mention followed. Somewhere along the line I got to know a strong, inde-
pendent woman who asked for nothing more than a fair shot at life. She made her own breaks, carved her own path, and achieved her own goals. My mother finally retired from her job in 1981. She ended her career with a final road trip in a brand new Oldsmobile purchased shortly before her retirement. My sister had moved to New Orleans and was having her second baby. I never suspected that 1,500 miles could ever separate my mother from one of her grandchildren’s births, and I was right. She made the trip alone, stayed a month and helped
with my niece Lauren, and then drove the return trip non-stop. I carried my mother out of the front door of her house for her final trip, an ambulance ride to the hospital. As I placed her on the stretcher and backed away so the attendants could care for her, she reached for my arm and motioned me back. “Another road trip,” she smiled. I’d like to think that’s what it was. One thing is for sure: What I know, what I accomplish or anything I achieve is probably due to some bit of information I gained from my
mother. Much of it came on long trips in an old Chevrolet, and some of the wisdom was accompanied with a swift kick in the pants. On this Mother’s Day, those road trips are special memories and remind me how lucky I was to be raised by such a dynamic, loving, compassionate individual. Her sacrifices were great but not unappreciated, and, somehow, I think she’d be pleased with the results witnessed in the lives of the children and grandchildren she loved unconditionally. Happy Mother’s Day, and peace be the journey.

On Thursday, April 28, the preschoolers at Mount Gilead Baptist Preschool participated in the St. Judes Trike-A-Thon. This fundraiser was a week-long program for the preschoolers to learn riding safety skills, while raising funds to ensure that no family ever receives a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food. The preschoolers had fun practicing their trike safety skills, while helping others. The “Car Wash” for their trikes was a favorite! The preschoolers raised $350 to send to St. Judes Hospital and learned that everyone can make a difference.

Goochland senior pitcher Nic Norman (center) delivers a pitch in the top of the seventh inning as fellow senior Coleman Duty (20) holds a Buckingham runner on. Norman went a complete game.
Seniors power Goochland past Buckingham 7-2 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
There are 16 players on the Goochland baseball roster. Ten of them were honored prior to the Bulldogs’ game against Buckingham on Monday at Goochland. “It’s a fun game,” Goochland coach Wes Farkas said. “We have 10 seniors. We started 10 seniors and 10 seniors finished the game. It was a fun night to recognize the Class of 2016. You
don’t get to do that very often. It was good to get that together for them.” And, fittingly, it was the seniors that powered the Bulldogs to a 72 victory over the Knights on both offense and defense. Offensively, Reid Chenault was 2 for 3 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and one RBI. Coleman Duty was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, Noah Doczi was 1 for 3 with a run and two RBIs, and Kendall Dolan was 1 for 2 with a run and 2 RBIs. Defensively, it was all about pitcher
Nic Norman. Norman threw a complete game and struck out 10 Knights’ batters. He allowed two runs on just two hits. “I feel good. I didn’t really hit my stride until about the third inning,” Norman said. “That’s what the beginning innings are for, working out the kinks. But, I feel pretty good about how I pitched.” In the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs were down 1-0 before their bats came to life. Doczi came to the plate with the
bases loaded and no outs. He singled right up the middle of the diamond, scoring two quick runs. Dolan was next and he grounded to third base. The runner on third scored on the grounder and the Buckingham third baseman sailed the throw, and Dolan was safe. Another throwing error from the first baseman to home allowed another run to score, and in the blink of an eye, Goochland was ahead 4-1. A sacrifice fly on the next at-bat made it 5-1 before the inning ended.
Norman allowed the second run of the game in the top of the third inning, but he sailed through the order the rest of the game. The top of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings all saw Buckingham sat down in order, and included six of Norman’s 10 strikeouts. The fourth inning featured three strikeouts in a row. At the plate, the Bulldogs were not done just yet, however. see Bulldogs> 13

Bulldogs continued from >12 In the bottom of the third, senior Scott Carter was hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal two bases. Chenault grounded the ball in the infield, but a fielding error caused him to be safe at first. Carter easily scored to make it 6-2. Chenault then stole a base of his own, and scored when Duty singled during his at-bat to make it 7-2. “We got on them early,” Farkas said. “I thought defensively we played pretty well. Nic pitched well. We got some key hits early and took advantage of mistakes, which is what you have to do. To be able to get a win was a good feeling.” The game against Buckingham was originally scheduled for May 5, but the constant rain of last week pushed the game to Monday. The Bulldogs were also scheduled to play against Prince Edward on May 3, but that game was moved due to the weather to May 20. Farkas said that his team was able to shed some rust from the week off. “Everyone has been inside or underwater this last week,” he said. “We’re still getting it back. Once guys got multiple at-bats, I felt like they were having better at-bats.” Norman said that he did feel rusty, but it was important to show up to every practice last week with a mindset to work hard no matter what. The Bulldogs are in the thick of a tight playoff race and with the season winding down, every detail counts at this time of the season. “This is a veteran team,” Farkas said. “As long we keep getting quality starts and hitting the baseball, I think we’re in good shape.””

Goochland’s Emily Hobbs sends a return back at her Greensville County opponent on Monday during the Conference 34 semifinals. Hobbs won her match 6-0, 6-1.
GHS girls tennis move on to conference finals By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The Goochland girls tennis team is on a mission. Their goal is to make it further than the team did last season, which was the semifinals of the region tournament. So far, so good. The Bulldogs downed Greensville County (Emporia) in the Conference 34 semifinals on Monday 5-0. Only the singles matches were played as the match had been decided without doubles being necessary. “I think the girls did exceptionally well,” Goochland girls
tennis coach Teresa Hood said. “They stayed very, very focused.” The Bulldogs only dropped three sets to the Eagles. Maddie Parker at No. 1 singles cruised past her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Britton Friz won her match 6-1, 6-0 and Emily Hobbs won her match 6-0, 6-1. Danielle Daly won her match 6-0, 6-0 and Hailey Bunge won her match 6-0, 6-1. While the team did get a match in last week at Randolph-Henry, a 6-3 defeat, the team struggled just as much as anyone else did with all the rain that soaked
the area last week. “I think (the rain threw us off) a little bit,” Hobbs said. “Just because we hadn’t had practice in so long.” Parker said that during rainy weeks like last week, she tries to get out and just get some hits in when the rain isn’t falling to stay sharp. Goochland advanced to play Prince Edward on Wednesday in the conference finals. The players of the Bulldogs are confident that this team is capable of achieving their goal of moving deep into the playoffs. “We want to make it past regionals,” Friz said and was
joined by Hobbs and Parker in that sentiment. Hood said that she “absolutely” thinks her team has what it takes. “Absolutely I do,” she said. “I would like to see if we can make it past the semifinals and make it to the regional final. That would be a wonderful goal to have.” As far as what the team needs to do to accomplish that goal, Hood said she has pointed a few things out to the team. Hood described it as “basic tennis fundamentals.” “One of the things I’ve been telling the girls all year is that they have to keep mov-
ing their feet,” she said. “They have to keep their eye on the ball and keep the ball deep. They need to concentrate on getting their serve in, getting their return serve in, and cutting down on errors.” Should Goochland achieve their goal of making the Region 2A East final, that accomplishment would qualify the team for the state tournament. The state finals are June 911 at Radford University.
