Gates named Teacher of the Year enter the profession by a teacher of her own. A Tennessee man is facing life in prison after pleading guilty to firing at a Virginia State Trooper during a high-speed car chase through Goochland in 2016. Paul Zamorano, 33, of Kingsport, Tennessee, was headed west on I-64 on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 15, 2016, when he passed State Trooper Seth Gaultney travelling at a speed just above 80 miles per hour. When Gaultney attempted to stop the car, the driver—later determined to be Zamorano’s wife, Mistri Griffith, 34— appeared ready to pull over but suddenly accelerated. Zamorano Giving chase, Gaultney pursued the vehicle onto the Hadensville exit ramp, then back onto I-64. As the chase reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, Zamorano fired a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol at Gaultney’s car, hitting the vehicle’s radiator and passenger mirror. Joined by Trooper Scott Thompson, Gaultney continued to pursue Zamorano and Griffith until the two attempted to leave the highway via the Shannon Hill exit and lost control of their vehicle, crashing into a wooded area. Both sustained non life-threatening injusee Murder case > 2

Murder case continued from >1 ries, but neither Trooper was injured during the chase. It was later determined that both the car and the gun had been stolen in Tennessee, and that Zamorano was wanted for failing to register as a sex offender there. Appearing in court on the morning of May 23, Zamorano pled guilty to attempted capital murder, for which he faces a sentence of life plus 10 years. He also pled guilty to using a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
He will be formally sentenced on July 25. Griffith faces the same charges as her husband, as well as a charge of eluding a police officer. Commonwealth’s Attorney D. Michael Caudill confirmed last week that what stood out most to him about the case was the way Gaultney handled the situation from beginning to end. During the entire chase and its aftermath, “he was just as calm, and collected and professional as someone in that situation could possibly be,” said Caudill, himself a former State Trooper. “His department is fortunate to have him.”

Local students take part in summer learning programs Contributed report
For Goochland County Public Schools gifted and high ability students, Summer Residential Governor’s Schools represent a special opportunity to extend learning with students of similar interests from across the Commonwealth. This Virginia Department of Education program provides rising juniors and seniors with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts, humanities, mathematics, science, and technology, or through mentorships in
marine science, medicine and health sciences, or engineering. Students apply to these highly selective programs and are considered among hundreds of applicants from across Virginia. Two students from Goochland High School have been accepted to summer residential Governor’s Schools. Sydney Meiller is a rising junior and will be attending the Governor’s School for Visual and Performing Arts to be held at Radford University. Sydney has been recognized
for her performance in several school productions, and is also a student in the Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School, one of two academic-year Governor’s School programs available to GHS students. Bryce Russell, a rising senior, was accepted to the highly competitive Governor’s School for Math, Science and Technology to be held at Lynchburg College this summer. Bryce participates in the Advance College Academy program at GHS and will complete an associate degree
while still a senior in high school. Rising senior Chloe Lyda will participate for the third year at the Brown University Pre-College Summer Program held at Brown University, an Ivy League institution located in Providence, Rhode Island. Lyda was awarded a full scholarship to participate in the program and will take a two week-long intensive English course, a subject of particular interest for her. She will live on the campus of Brown during her study. Lyda is a student
in the GCPS Advance College Academy program, is active in student government, and is currently the student representative to the Goochland County School Board.

she also says there were some things she didn’t anticipate about the profession. She didn’t know, for example, just how much time teachers spend preparing lessons, or the emotional energy teachers expend trying to make sure each and every student is getting the most out of each lesson. And while Gates says she would encourage all new teachers starting out to try their best for a proper work/life balance, she also knows it isn’t always possible. “The more you put in, the more you are able to get out of your kids, says Gates, admitting that she is always taking work home with her and, like many other teachers, logs plenty of extra hours trying to make sure her lessons are as engaging as possible. “Basically, I can look at the kids and know that if I’m bored, they are going to be bored, Gates says, so she
works constantly to find ways to present material in a way her students will find engaging. The lesson plans are critical, Gates says, but she also spends a significant amount of time on something that can’t be measured on any aptitude test. “All these fun things are great, she says, “but the first thing you need to do is to make sure you are building relationships with your students. They are not going to buy into what you are trying to do as a teacher if they don’t see that. Asked for one other piece of advice she considers invaluable as a teacher, Gates says she has one guiding principle that has served her well over the years, particularly when the going got tough. No matter what, “never give up on any of your students, she says. “If they know you believe in them, you will be amazed by what they can do.
continued from >1 moment and the students will be engaged in often self-directed projects. The room is a flexible artist’s palette — walls change, seats change, props come and go. Gates, Gardener said, is also very adept at maximizing the tools she has at her disposal. “She doesn’t just rope resources in for quick project support, rather she builds relationships where parents, community members, and organizations want to partner with her to provide long term bonds that will make a difference in the lives of our youth, Gardner said. Building a top-notch teacher takes time, of course, and Gates has spent years developing the techniques she employs today. Now a few decades removed from the makeshift classrooms she would set up as a child,

providing well rounded leisure and play opportunities for the youth of the community. The County has made concerted efforts within its Parks and Recreation inventory to develop new and improve existing playgrounds within its park inventory. Additionally, the County has worked with various non-profits, the school system, volunteers, and local businesses to help fund and install various walking, biking and multiuse trails throughout Goochland. Goochland Parks and Recreation has also worked over the past two years to implement a self-directed wellness and facility use marketing strategy to benefit its citizens young and old. The strategy, ActiveGVA, is designed to communicate and encourage self-directed opportunities for Goochland citizens to explore and experience the County’s natural, historic, and athletic resources.
The 2017 Playful City USA recognition includes 258 communities across the country that are transforming ordinary places into playful spaces and using play as a solution to the challenges facing their residents. The benefits of being designated as a Playful City USA include national recognition and increased competitive advantage in competitions for grants and other funding opportunities; access to Kaboom!’s playability engagement series, webinars, newsletters, and policy tools; and two highway road signs to showcase the recognition to residents and visitors. The collaborative effort to apply for the program was led by Capital Region Collaborative (CRC) and Sports Backers as part of the effort to increase active living habits by transforming ordinary places into playful spaces. Last year, the partners
worked with the City of Richmond to receive a 2016 designation as a Playful City USA. Active RVA’s Director, Jeff McIntyre added, “This is far more than entertainment and leisure. Active play is crucial to the well-being of kids, families, and their communities. In a playable environment, children’s creative adventures on the playground create a foundation for classroom learning. For adults and families, play creates connections, expands social networks, and helps to build stronger and safer neighborhoods. It shows our commitment to providing all members of the community with enhanced opportunities to be more active.” As cities are becoming hotbeds for innovation, communities across the country are creating inventive ways to attract and retain residents. Playful City USA honorees are taking bold action to ensure kids have
great places to play with the goal of making play the easy choice for all kids, no matter where they live. In addition to the playground down the street, Playful City USA communities are turning grocery stores, vacant lots, crosswalks and sidewalks into opportunities for play. “We are thrilled to recognize Goochland County for putting kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “The well-being of our communities starts with the well-being of our kids, and play is critical for them to thrive. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all kids get the childhood they deserve filled with play.” To see the full list of Playful City USA communities and to learn more about making play the easy choice for kids, visit www.playfulcityusa.org. Preschoolers take part in Trike-A-Thon for St. Judes
Contributed photo
Recently, the preschoolers at Mount Gilead Baptist Preschool participated in the St. Judes Trike-A-Thon. The fundraiser included a week-long program for the preschoolers to learn tricycle riding safety skills. State Police Officer Adam Ruffin, a motorcycle policeman, was on hand for the event to remind the preschoolers of bike safety. The preschoolers raised $664 to send to St. Judes Hospital. These funds help to ensure that no family receives a bill from St. Jude Hospital for treatment, travel, housing or food. The preschoolers had a fun morning practicing their tricycle safety while reaching out to help others.
As students move on, teachers should feel proud By Roslyn Ryan Editor
In less than two weeks, the teachers and administrators at Goochland High School will bid farewell to their latest group of newly-minted graduates, nudging
them off into the waiting world and praying that they will achieve every goal on which they set their sights. Being a teacher this time of year must be bittersweet, I’ve always thought, since it is the teachers who get to see these students grow and achieve so much year after year.

It never gets old. For parents sitting in overcrowded gymnasiums or stuffy auditoriums, watching a child walk down the aisle and accept a well-earned diploma represents a moment of satisfaction and accomplishment that can only come when someone you love accomplishes a goal. The celebrations might seem old hat to those on the outside, but for the millions of Americans involved in graduation this year, it marks the beginning of lives that hold promise and hope for the future. It also marks the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another, a time when innocence blends with reality. I’ve sat through quite a few graduations, listened to numerous speakers evoking all kinds of advice for the audience. The words of wisdom are often lost in the energy of the event, and expecting over-juiced kids to actually listen to the speakers is often an exercise in futility. The coming months of life will offer the first sign of life’s real lessons that do demand attention, and endless words of advice won’t change or prepare the graduates for what lies ahead. Most will soon deal with the real challenges of life that mold and make us, and the memories associated with the celebration of graduation will fade. That’s not to say the pomp and circumstance are not important. Recognizing years of packed lunches, last-minute projects and overladen backpacks is a deserved rite of passage, for students and parents. But, as many speakers will tell you, the important stuff begins now for the graduates, and the true signs of success don’t always see Ridolphi > page 7

Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery expansion, new facility, expected to create 59 new jobs Investments top $14 million for expansion in Goochland and new production facility in City of Lynchburg Contributed report
Governor Terry McAuliffe announced on May 26 that Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery will invest more than $14 million and create 59 new jobs over the next three years to expand its operations. The company will open a new production brewery in Lynchburg to complement its current facility in Goochland, which will undergo a major expansion complete with a 50,000-square-foot production brewery that will house a stateof-the-art brewing system and packaging line. “Today’s announcement is another example of a success story for the Commonwealth’s booming craft brewery industry and builds on our ongoing efforts to create a new Virginia economy, said Governor McAuliffe. “Investments like this create jobs, tourism opportunities, and new markets for Virginia’s farmers as craft breweries source products like hops, fruit, herbs, and other agricultural products. Lickinghole Creek has built a strong reputation for its awardwinning beers and its locally grown ingredients, and the city of Lynchburg offers the infrastructure, available site and building, and natural resources that will allow the company to continue to thrive and grow.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) worked with Goochland County, the City of Lynchburg, and the company to secure these projects for Virginia. Governor McAuliffe approved a $250,000 grant from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Fund for the expansion in Goochland, and a $50,000 AFID grant for the new facility in Lynchburg. Both grants will be matched with local funds. Additional funding and services to support the company’s employee training activities will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program. “Lickinghole Creek’s new and expanding operations in Goochland and Lynchburg, along with its commitment to sourcing ingredients from Virginia’s agricultural producers creates a huge opportunity to continue to expand the craft beer supply chain in Virginia, said Basil Gooden, Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry. “This is a great story of a local business growing its operations and connecting with area producers to create a unique product that showcases the terroir of Virginia. I am pleased to support a home-grown Virginia business in its continued success, as we continue our work with the Governor and private sector partners to build a new Virginia economy. “The growing craft beer industry in Virginia is an important contributor to the economic vitality of our communities, said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Todd Haymore. “We are working hard to support our diversified agricultural industry, create more jobs in the manu-
facturing sector, and promote increased tourism in Virginia and Lickinghole Creek’s expansion is contributing to the progress in these areas. I congratulate Lickinghole Creek, Goochland County, and the City of Lynchburg on this exciting news, and we look forward to continuing this partnership for years to come. Since its founding in 2013, Lickinghole Creek has sought to be Virginia’s leading farm brewery, growing many of the ingredients used in their beers on their 290 acre farm in the heart of Virginia. In Lynchburg, the company will build an innovative brewery focused on sour beer production and barrel-aged brews. The expansion is Goochland will allow a substantial increase in production, the introduction of a lageredbeer program, and a large new tap room and event space. Lickinghole Creek’s increased production capacity will allow the company to continue to meet the growing demand from its existing markets, as well as enter new ones. “This would not have been possible without the incredible support of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Goochland County and the city of Lynchburg, said Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery CEO Lisa Pumphrey. “We are excited to expand, and getting ready to share our world-class products — grown, crafted and brewed with love, right here in the heart of the Commonwealth — with the rest of the country. “It is a great day for Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery and Goochland County, our Board has made economic development a priority and we are thrilled to be able to announce this project
said Ned Creasely, Goochland County Board of Supervisors Chairman. “Lickinghole, in addition to being an awardwinning brewery is a wonderful corporate citizen and we are proud to partner with them in the expansion of their facility. “
“Development of Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery is a perfect example of individual initiative on the part of a remarkable couple to create a thriving local business, finally made possible by cooperation among local and state officials, Delegate Lee Ware
added. “It has been a privilege as the delegate representing western Goochland in the legislature to have been able to contribute to crafting laws that accommodated the brewery’s founders and neighboring citizens’ interests. This is a great place and business.

Goochland downs King William 4-1 in regionals By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
During the first three innings of the Region 2A East softball quarterfinals against King William on May 29, Goochland’s offense just needed a spark. The Bulldogs defense had been holding the Cavaliers in check, led by Kailyn Spencer’s strong pitching performance. But, the offense just needed to get in gear against King William pitcher Jenna Evans.
Goochland broke through in the fourth inning for two runs and another two in the fifth inning to take down the Cavaliers 4-1, ending King William’s season. “It’s always great to get a win and keep moving on,” Bulldogs coach Amy Henneberger said. “At this level, you’re going to face really good teams. I’m just glad we got the hits when we did, kept moving the runners around and got them in scoring position. Our pitching was
really good. We’ll take a couple more games like this.” Going into the fourth inning, Goochland had had a chance in the bottom of the third to get the offense on track, but couldn’t move pinch runner Cherish Sims further than second base. The bottom of the fourth didn’t get off to a great start was Evans got Dakota Hansen to ground out to third base and Spencer popped up to Evans. But, then things started to roll for Goochland.
McKenzie Reams singled and then Kisha Braxton worked a walk. Rachel Ferguson stepped up to the plate and deposited a pitch into the outfield, scoring Reams from second to make it 1-0 Goochland. Martin then grounded to shortstop, but King William’s shortstop couldn’t handle the ball, allowing Braxton to score for a 2-0 lead. Catoria Towles struck out to end the inning with one
runner left on base. King William attempted to answer in the top of the fifth as Sierra Healey led the inning off with a single and reached second base on a sacrifice by Tara Hart. But, Spencer dug in and struck out Evans and got Mikayla Richardson to groundout to second base. Goochland continued its offensive surge in the bottom of the fifth. Carleigh Gilstrap led the inning off with a walk.
After Faith Gerdes struck out, Hansen moved Gilstrap over with a sacrifice bunt. Spencer then delivered with an RBI single to make it 3-0 Goochland. Reams then singled and Braxton knocked Spencer in with a single of her own to make it 4-0 Goochland. Ferguson worked a twoout walk to load the bases, but Martin grounded the ball right see Bulldogs> 12

Roundup: Baseball takes down King William 9-3 From staff reports
Goochland pitcher Tanner Bradshaw spotted King William three runs in the first inning of the Bulldogs’ Region 2A East baseball quarterfinal at King William Monday. He made up for that in the remaining innings, holding the Cavaliers scoreless while the Goochland offense stepped up to claim a 9-3 victory over King William. The Bulldogs next host Page County Wednesday at 5 p.m. Bradshaw was a little worried after the Cavaliers took their early 3-0 lead. “At the beginning of the game, I was a little nervous, honestly, because I had pitched against them my 10th-grade year and they ended up beating us 7-2,” he said. “But then my curve ball started working. I got a little bit more comfortable on the mound. I was ready to go from there.” Bradshaw – who was also starting quarterback for the Bulldogs’ football team – rarely pitches more than five innings, but took advantage of some short frames to extend his time on the mound. When he strolled onto the infield in the seventh inning, assistant coach Dan Summitt – also one of Goochland’s football coaches – told him “It’s
Bulldogs continued from >11 to the Cavaliers first baseman for an unassisted third out. “They just needed to believe in themselves,” Henneberger said. “They don’t face that type of speed from a pitcher all season long. It’s just a matter of getting the timing down and believing in themselves that they could
third-and-one at the goal line. Get it done!” “He put that in my head, and it made me think about football,” Bradshaw said. “It gassed me up a little bit.” He got Travis Shumate to ground out to the mound. He walked his next batter, Jake Duresky. That brought up Shawn Parker, the top of the King William batting order – and the last batter he was going to face no matter what. “He was at the pitch-count limit,” said Goochland head coach Wes Farkas. “He was almost there, so we were going to pull him after that batter.” Bradshaw got Parker to ground into a double play to end the game. The Bulldogs had 13 hits off three King William pitchers. Walker Murray had two hits, including a double. John King, Wyatt Murray, Jeb Anderson and Zac Harlow each had a pair of hits for Goochland.

Hailey Baldwin then knocked Temple in with a double to make it 4-1. Spencer once again contained the remaining Cavaliers with two fly outs,
one to centerfield and the other to third base. Despite getting two runners on in the bottom of the sixth inning, Goochland couldn’t push across any more insurance runs. Spencer sat the Cavaliers down in order in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win. Spencer pitched a complete game and allowed one run on two hits and

The Bulldogs dispatched Prince Edward 10-0 in the opening round of the Conference 34 tournament and was scheduled to play Greensville in the semifinals. But, repeated rescheduled games
due to the wet weather that plagued the area over the past week eventually forced both conference semifinals to be cancelled. Nottoway, the number two seed in the conference, also advanced. The Bulldogs travelled to Clarke County on May 31 for their region semifinal matchup. The result of that game was after the print deadline for this edition.
