s we say farewell to 2015 once and for all, we wanted to take one quick look back at just a few more highlights we won’t soon forget.

One last look Central High courts back open Just in time for the 2015 rec basketball season, Goochland County officials gathered in January 2015 to officially open the newly renovated Central High School gymnasium. The first phase of a planned renovation to what was once the county’s black high school, the improvements to the gymnasium on Dogtown Road added much-needed playing space for recreational basketball players county-wide. see Look back > 3

The competition was once again fierce during Relay for Life’s annual Chili Cookoff last Saturday, but, when the smoke cleared, the Mt. Gilead Purple Hearts team members were declared the champs. The winning recipe, which edged out those cooked up by the Mizpah Faith Walkers and the Friends Against Cancer Team (FACT), was described as “fullflavored, hearty, and just spicy enough to warm you from the inside,” said event co-organizer Judy Hackler. Hackler said the timing of the cookoff couldn’t have been better, particularly since the weather was, well, chilly. Plenty of people stopped by to sample the offerings, including a number of hunters enjoying the last day of hunting season. The win by Mt. Gilead was notable, in part, because it marked the first time in the event’s three-year run that the top prize wasn’t won by the Oakland Oaks. According to Hackler, the Oaks team did not enter this year. While the event certainly offered a day of good food and fun for both contestants and samplers, the reason for the cook-off is no laughing matter. All funds raised go to support the county’s Relay for Life effort, the annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. A planning meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 for anyone who would like to help plan and organize this year’s effort. The location will be announced at a later date, but anyone who would like more information is asked to contact Hackler at (804) 339-4075.

A little more kindness in And the winners are ... 2016? Sounds like a plan By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Anti-bullying efforts, as a rule, are pretty easy to get behind. After all, every single person reading this column was a child at some point, and all of us have felt — at least at some point in our lives — as if we were the target of unkind words or actions. I can’t recall exactly who created it, but a short video I noticed on Facebook the other day offered the most heartening example in recent memory of people taking

In the video, shot at a public bus stop with the aid of a hidden camera, two girls who look to be about 13 are seen saying cruel things to a younger girl sitting near them. They insult her clothes and tell her other kids at the school make fun of her. They tell her

she’s weird, unpopular and untalented. Here’s the thing: The kids are just actors. The entire video was apparently set up to capture the reaction of the bystanders witnessing the abuse. Of course, it’s not possible to know how many people jumped in and stuck up for the young girl and how many simply turned their heads. But the video offers at least a half dozen examples of people stepping in and speaking out, offering admonishment to the older children and encouragement to their target. Call me a sap, but it was easily one of the sweetest things I’ve seen on the Internet in quite some time. As we get this New Year started, let’s resolve to continue our efforts to make sure that children have safe places to learn and grow, and that all kids understand the ramifications of both their words and their actions. In fact, why not resolve to be a little gentler to everyone this year, from the person who snags the parking space you wanted to the family member at whom you’re typically tempted to roll your eyes? “Don’t wait for people to be kind,” went a quote I read recently, “show them how.” Certainly a resolution worth keeping this year.

Looking ahead: What will inspire in 2016? By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

After thousands of printed words and countless columns, I still have something to say as we say goodbye to 2015 and usher in 2016. This week’s routine reading has been filled with various columnists offering their reflections on the past year, many of them highlighting the top stories of the year in order of importance. Rather than produce a less detailed and certainly less informed overview highlighting the past year’s top stories, a recap of what and who I’ve written about over 52 weeks of columns seemed more enlightened. As a news editor, reporter and photographer, I often had the misconception that columnists had the easiest job in the building. In reality, telling stories that people want to read is not as easy as it looks. I quickly learned that writng a readable column requires constant attention.

But, it also has its advantages. Exploring new subjects and studying opposing points of view allows a unique insight into a variety of subjects. As a journalist, it exposes to me the hundreds of important stories and issues, all of them newsworthy and worth so much more than just a column. I’ve explored places forgotten, people who live extraordinary lives in the seclusion of their communities, human emotions, including love, happiness, despair, grief and more. I’ve written about my family, your family, our community and our nation, all told with an aspired amount of humility and candor. There were heroes and villains, volunteers and violators — everything from fruit stand operators to just plain fruits, all of them with a story worth telling. And the question I get most often regarding my column is: Where do you come up with the ideas each week?

The honest answer is I don’t know. My children often ask me why I always take notes. In an explanation that never seems to hit the exact target, I tell them I’m getting information for a future column. Twenty years ago, I began writing a column called “America, My kind of place,” and have continued in one form or another every week since its first run. I consider its longevity a compliment to its content. Over those years, I’ve encountered thousands of wonderful people, all of them supplying information for a future column, a fact often oblivious to the interviewer and interviewee. Where do I get the inspiration for my columns? Anywhere …everywhere. Being lucky enough to write about life affords an author an infinite supply of subject matter. Sometimes, it all runs together, but — looking back at the past 12 months — I immediately think of see Looking ahead > page 7

I know it’s really early in the year, but I want to be able to look back before the Thanksgiving and Christmas season of 2016 and see what I can do better as far as survival skills. This year — or I guess now it’s last year — we had a record 17 grandchildren and 12 children and spouses habitate our humble abode during the holidays. That’s a lot of chocolate chip pancakes, milk,

towels and hugs. We count our blessings. But there are also some things I want to remember so I can do them a little better next year, or at least be better prepared. So let’s call them the “Holiday Resolutions for 2016.” And, no, I don’t avoid saying “Christmas.” I said “Merry Christmas” all the time. I’m just including Thanksgiving and New Year’s in the whole mix. Here goes the list of what I want to remember:

YOUR HEALTH: Tips and Advice

One way to shed pounds? Avoid ‘quick-fix’ solutions Maintaining a healthy weight is a great way to avoid sickness and disease. According to the Obesity Education Initiative, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, as people become overweight and obese, their risk for developing a host of ailments, including coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and hypertension, increases. But the consequences of being overweight or obese are not only physical. Psychological side effects like anxiety and low self-esteem have been linked to overweight and obesity as well. With such serious consequences linked to being overweight, it’s no wonder so many men and women are looking to shed pounds. As adults embark on their weight loss journeys, they can expect to encounter a host of “miracle” solutions to weight loss that will promise skinnier waistlines seemingly overnight. But the best way to lose weight is to do so safely and nutritiously. Avoid short-term diets. Many adults know someone who has experience with a “get-thinquick” diet that promises to produce slimmer waistlines in a matter of days or weeks. While such diets might actually be able to deliver on their promises, short-term diets rarely lead to long-term weight loss. When attempting to lose weight, men and women should want to shed pounds and keep those pounds off. Short-term diets may require dieters to make unreasonable sacrifices to produce rapid weight loss. But such sacrifices can rarely be made over the long-haul, and doing so might even be unhealthy. Approach your diet as a long-term commitment that requires a lifestyle change, not temporary and difficultto-maintain restrictions. Eat only when you’re hungry. Eating only when youÕre hungry may sound obvious, but many people eat as an emotional response to difficult situations, while others may eat as a way of dealing with boredom. If you routinely respond to stress by eating, find a healthier way of coping, whether it’s going to the gym for a workout or taking the dog for a walk. In addition, don’t respond to boredom with food. If boredom is setting in, pick up a book or call a friend and plan an activity together. You may be surprised to learn how much weight you can lose when you limit eating to only those

times when you are truly hungry. Eat at home. Even though many restaurants now provide calorie information on their menus, dining out does not afford adults the opportunity to control their diets as much as eating at home does, as dieters can control each and every ingredient that goes into their meals when eating at home.

new year often begins with good intentions, as thousands resolve to make positive changes in their lives. Resolutions are easy to make when one is toasting at midnight and ready to take on the world. But resolutions can be harder to keep as the days turn into weeks and weeks become months.

Talking ’bout a

Resolution Simple ways to make sure you reach your goals this time

Researchers at the University of Minnesota found that 80 percent of resolution-makers have given up by Valentine’s Day. A January 2012 poll conducted in England found that, of the 3,000 respondents, roughly three-quarters of them admitted they were no longer confident they would stick to their resolutionss for the rest of the month. There are several different reasons why resolutions fail, and recognizing potential pitfalls can help people stick with their positive changes throughout the new year. The following are a few ways to ensure your resolutions last the year. Don’t make an unrealistic resolution. Losing weight is a popular resolution. Some resolve to drop dozens of pounds in an effort to completely transform their bodies. However, when the weight doesn’t magically come off, it can be easy to grow discouraged. Weight loss is not instantaneous, and healthy weight-loss plans advocate gradual weight loss, such as 1 to 2 pounds per week. It can take several months to see a considerable difference if you’re aiming to lose 50 pounds. Instead of setting such a lofty weight-loss goal, establish incremental milestones with tangible dates. For example, your resolution may be to lose 10 pounds by March 1st. That is an attainable goal. Don’t go it alone. You’re more likely to have success with keeping a resolution if you have outside support. Enlist a buddy to go to the gym with you or provide support as you attempt to quit smoking. Having a support system in place can motivate and inspire, knowing someone will be keeping tabs on you may instill enough anxiety to propel you through your resolutions. Make resolutions for the right reasons. Making resolutions for the wrong reasons can be counterproductive. If you want to lose weight for cosmetic reasons and not to improve your overall health, you may find your motivation waning as the weeks turn into months. Making resolutions for the right reasons often provides ample motivation. Avoid boring resolutions. Many people make boring resolutions that often focus on the mundane instead of more positive things. Resolutions need not be changes that profoundly alter your mental or physical well-being. Making fun resolutions will probably help you stick to them. Perhaps you will resolve to spend more time with the

Don’t forget your finances when making resolutions

W

hen the time comes to make New Year’s resolutions, the conventional wisdom is to focus on weight. Such wisdom is understandable, as many people spend the holiday season indulging in big meals and all the treats synonymous with having fun. While it’s acceptable to make healthy resolutions, a slimmer waist and a healthier diet should not be the only goals for the year ahead. In light of the last several years, it’s important for men and women to make financial resolutions for the year ahead, too. No one can say with certainty when, or if, the economy will rebound, and men and women should look at the New Year as a suitable time to make some financial resolutions for the future. Reassess your investment plan. Since 2008, the market has been up and down like a roller coaster. Those who have weathered the storm have no doubt witnessed big gains and significant losses over the last few years, and the turn of the calendar is a great time to reassess investments and possibly make some changes. Are you taking on more risk than you’re comfortable with? Is your portfolio too conservative? How well are you diversifying? Look at your investments from every angle and determine if it’s time to make some changes. Resolve to be more liquid. A 2011 poll from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling found that 64 percent of Americans would need to utilize a source other than their savings account to pay for a $1,000 unplanned expense. That percentage illustrates that most adults just don’t have enough cash on hand. This year, resolve to be more liquid. Being more liquid enables you to more effectively handle emergencies, and it also helps you avoid being forced to sell investments at

the wrong time. Shake things up. If you rely on one individual to handle all of your financial needs, such a practice needs to change. No matter how much you trust this person, don’t fall into a trap where one person acts as your financial svengali. Such an arrangement proved very costly to those men and women who trusted the likes of Bernie Madoff, a onceprominent financier who turned out to be nothing more than a criminal mastermind orchestrating history’s largest Ponzi scheme. This year, if you haven’t done so already, make sure your financial advisor, money manager, custodian, and trustee are all different people. Negotiate lower rates. Use the onset of the New Year as a chance to negotiate newer and lower interest rates on existing loans or credit cards. If you have exercised financial responsibility over the last 12 months, paying down debts and paying all bills on time, this is the perfect time to negotiate lower rates and reap the rewards of your good behavior. Don’t invest in anything you don’t understand. Too often inves-

tors get caught up in so-called expert forecasts and act impulsively based on the advice of some talking head they see on television or hear on the radio. Unfortunately, such “experts” aren’t always certified financial professionals, and some might even have ulterior motives for pushing certain investments and shunning others. What’s more, few people know the track record of these “experts,” so their advice should not be taken at face value. A simple rule for the year ahead should be to never invest in anything you don’t understand. If an investment opportunity seems worthwhile, do all of your homework to gain a solid understanding of the opportunity before investing any money. Healthy resolutions go beyond a slimmer waist and a healthier diet. This year, resolve to get healthier financially as well. —MetroCreative

Ring in the New Year with your pet It’s the time of year when people make resolutions to be a better and healthier version of themselves. So why not make resolutions that will mutually benefit you and your pet? Here are some ideas to help you and yours have the best year yet.

Eat more fresh food This may seem like an easy resolution. However, it takes time and preparation. For humans, this means incorporating more fruits and veggies into your diet while for pets this means ensuring that their pet food uses ingredients such as fresh turkey, salmon and duck, fresh omega 3 and 6 oils (from coconuts and canola), wholesome berries and fruits and vegetables like peas, spinach and carrots. Now Fresh premium petfood by Petcurean is a great example. You can learn more about choosing a pet food with the freshest, healthiest ingredients at petcurean.com.

Get more exercise Did you know pets can decrease our blood pressure and cholesterol levels and increase our opportunities for exercise, outdoor activities and socialization? Exercising together will not only help optimize your health but also allow you to spend more time together.

Use that agenda. This doesn’t seem like a resolution, but sometimes making a plan is the only way resolutions will come to life. Most of us schedule time for other appointments and meetings, so why not set aside some priority time for pets too? — MetroCreative

Goochland’s BJ Snead (4) goes up against Nottoway’s JayQuan Anderson (20) and Jakai Garnes (14) on Jan. 4 at Goochland. Snead would not be denied against the Nottoway defense, scoring 36 points.

Bulldogs’ Snead goes for 36 in win By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland’s BJ Snead could not be stopped by Nottoway on Monday, scoring 36 points against the Cougars. The Bulldogs would need every one of Snead’s points in the game. In what originally looked as though Goochland would run away with a 20-point victory, the Cougars mounted a comeback that pushed the Bulldogs to the brink.

But, Snead, solid free throw shooting, and solid last-second defensive stand raised the Bulldogs over the Cougars 7167. The game was fast paced from the start, with a total of 35 points scored in the first quarter. “It was a bit more fastpaced than what we want to be playing right now,” Goochland coach Preston Gordon said. “We’ve played that way in the past, so these guys are able to play that way. But, sometimes

playing fast we don’t make the best decisions, so that’s why we were trying to slow things down a bit.” Jack Twombly and Snead both got off to good starts for the Bulldogs, pushing Goochland out to a nine-point halftime lead. “Jack had a great game for us. I thought he had more rebounds than eight. He had 17 points and BJ had 36,” Gordon said. “That’s huge.” The Cougars’ turning point came, ironically, after

Nottoway’s coach was given a technical foul for yelling from the bench about foul calls. Snead missed the two technical free throws, but the next possession he converted a 3-point play to put the lead to 52-31. Then, the Goochland defense started fouling a lot and Nottoway was making their free throws. JayQuan Anderson started to heat up with two 3point shots and Jakai Garnes had eight points in the quarter, including converting two 3-point plays.

The Goochland offense, meanwhile, had gone cold and by the end of the Cougars’ 26-2 run, Nottoway was ahead by one. “I give a lot of credit to Nottoway, their coach lit a fire under them and they drove to the basket,” Gordon said. “We did not do a very good job of stopping the penetration. And then, we fouled. We played lazy defense. Other times, we just gave a layup. Just little mental mistakes. We are growing as a team and need to make better

decisions.” After the lead change, which was the first lead Nottoway had since the first quarter, Goochland freshman Deion Harwood hit a clutch 3-pointer in the corner that stopped the Cougars’ momentum. Nottoway would get within two points, but Snead would complete a 3-point play that put Goochland ahead for good. Goochland’s defense would see Bulldogs> 13

Bulldogs continued from >12 hold on Nottoway’s final possession and the clock ran out on the come-from-behind victory attempt. “Our younger guys really came to play tonight for us,” Gordon said. “Deion made the three right here in the corner. He’s got ice in his veins. He’s a freshman starting on varsity. I think that speaks volumes of what he can do.” Some of those “younger guys” didn’t necessarily put up big numbers in the box score, but did the little things that helped the team win, according to Gordon. “Deion handled the ball really well. He had a couple shots that didn’t fall for him, but they were good looks,” he said. “He did the little things. Dallas Holmes, who we just pulled up

from JV, gave us great minutes. He did a nice job defensively and had a couple buckets at the end. Josh Chandler had a good night for us, doing the little things.” One big aspect of the Goochland win was the free throw shooting. The Bulldogs were 17 of 22 from the freethrow line. “I’m gonna give credit to Coach Singleton,” Gordon said. “It was one of our points of emphasis this year. It’s a ‘mustdo’ for us to be successful this season.” Gordon said that this win was huge for the Bulldogs, with a big week upcoming on the road against Central Lunenburg on Wednesday and home facing Randolph-Henry on Friday. “(This win) shows that we never give up,” he said. “We’re not going to lay down.” Photo by Billy Blowers

Goochland’s Dorothy Clore (11) drives between Hanover’s Kora Kane (20) and Olivia Adams (42) last week at Hanover High School. Clore led the Bulldogs with 11 points.

Goochland’s Jack Twombly (5) had a strong first half for the Bulldogs. He had 17 points and eight rebounds for Goochland and was a strong force in the paint. Nottoway had a hard time stopping him and BJ Snead.

MECHANICSVILLE – The combination of experienced talent and an infusion of youthful energy proved to be the winning one for Hanover girls basketball coach Mike Rohr. Junior varsity call-up Olivia Adams joined stalwarts Rachael Metzger and Keri Kane in the double-figure column as the Hawks earned their first win of the year, a 66-29 decision over visiting Goochland in the Battle in the Birdcage on Tuesday night. “I like what we’re doing,” Rohr said. “We’re getting better every night out.” Metzger and Kane came out hot as the Hawks (1-9)

controlled the game from the beginning. Metzger scored eight points in the first quarter on drives down the lane as Hanover jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead. “She’s young and she’s still learning,” Rohr said. “We’ve put a lot on her shoulders, and she’s handling it extremely well. She’s going to get better and better every night out.” The Hawks went cold in the second quarter, but their defense nearly pitched a shutout, giving up only a Dorothy Clore layup off a last-second inbounds play as Hanover led 26-13 at the half. Adams took the baton at that point, burying a 3-pointer and scoring nine points during a 12-0 run that put the game

on ice. Metzger spent some time on the bench after her fast start as Rohr got his reserves some playing time, but she reasserted herself in the fourth quarter en route to a 19-point, fiverebound outing. Kane controlled the glass in a 14-point, 12-rebound effort, while Adams scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half. Adams and Kora Kane made their varsity debuts after excelling for the junior varsity team early in the season. “They’d been doing really well down there, so we brought them up for Christmas break to give us a little energy,” Rohr said. “They sure did a good job. All year, they’ve been doing a great job being aggressive on the defensive side, pushing the

ball up the floor and raising the energy level of everyone else around them.” The best stretch for Goochland (0-10) came midway through the first quarter when the Bulldogs had some success against the Hanover press. D.J. Lopez started a 9-1 run off a Clore feed, then Clore responded to a Keri Kane free throw with a 3-pointer. A Nia Howell jumper and a nifty give-and-go between Clore and Erin Wachter cut the Hawks’ lead to 13-11, but Hanover righted the ship with a Sarah Wright jumper and two free throws from Keri Kane. Clore was the Bulldogs’ only double-digit scorer, tallying 11 points. Lopez had eight points and eight rebounds.

This is the best one and I hope it comes true. Please, please, please let it come true because I have a really small kitchen. I want to win a free kitchen remodel before the 2016 holidays. Then I can have enough room in the kitchen for six different family cooks helping me. And there will be plenty of counter space so that 20 red plastic cups won’t even show up. And I can put a big poinsettia on my new kitchen island and everyone will obey the rule about not throwing balls in the house
