The Goochland County School Division has been honored by the Virginia Board of Education as one of 55 Title I schools raising the academic achievement of economically disadvantaged students. The awards are based on student performance on Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments during the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years. Each school and division will receive a certificate celebrating its status and achievement. “Public schools don’t get to select their students, but division superintendents, principals, teachers and other public school educators do decide how they respond to the challenges economically disadvantaged children bring to the classroom,” see Schools > 4

In her own remarks prior to handing over the gavel to Minnick, Lascolette thanked County Administrator Rebecca Dickson, County Attorney Norman Sales and the entire county staff for their support, attention to detail and “thoughtful delib-
erations.” Lascolette, who was the first woman in the board’s history to hold the chairmanship, also thanked the citizens of Goochland and pledged that she and her fellow board members would continue working hard for them.
Minnick continued from >1 man of the board last year. This year that role will belong to District 3 representative Ned Creasey, currently the longest serving member of the board.
Park continued from >1 classes in kayaking, canoeing and other activities on the James River. The school will be one of 10 such schools in the nation operated by the Maine-based retailer. To Derek Stamey, Goochland’s director of County Parks, Recreation and Facilities, the planned partnership will be a boon to both the county and the retailer. In addition to allowing L.L. Bean to take advantage of a calm, easily accessible area of the James for use in its community outreach programs, the Outdoor Discovery School “will provide quality outdoor programming for the citizens of Goochland,” Stamey said. “And that has always been our goal.” Stamey said he was also pleased with the fact that the project will bring skilled
instructors to the county at no cost to taxpayers — many of the Outdoor Discovery School programs are offered free of charge — and also will encourage more people to take advantage of a true Goochland jewel. “We truly have an amazing natural resource with Tucker Park,” Stamey said, “and this is just another way for us to showcase that.” The county Board of Supervisors approved a lease agreement on Jan. 5 that will allow L.L. Bean to use the park, but also contains provisions limiting the impact on others wishing to use the property. The one-year lease, which will automatically renew for four years, does not offer L.L. Bean exclusive use of the launch, and limits Outdoor Adventure School classes to off-peak hours. Per the agreement, L.L. Bean will pay the county $750 a year for maintenance of the
property. Classes are expected to start in May. Beth Moore, current president of the Friends of Goochland Parks organization, said the partnership with L.L. Bean is one more step in spreading the word about Goochland’s park system. “We are thrilled that the LL Bean partnership will bring even more people down to enjoy the river and riverfront beauty of Tucker Park and Goochland County,” Moore said. “It is another opportunity for the Friends of Goochland Parks to increase environmental awareness and foster recreation amid the amazing natural elements found at Tucker Park.” Ranked Top 1% of ALL agents in the USA!

BOS honors champion volleyball team By Roslyn Ryan Editor
The Goochland County Board of Supervisors took a moment Jan. 5 to honor a history-making group of Goochland students. The text of the resolution recognized the team’s “exemplary teamwork and sportsmanship,” and the fact that the group’s accomplishment had “served as a source of great pride for the entire community.” The honor also noted that the GHS volleyball team is the first all-girls team to win a state championship for Goochland.

passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 — authorizes federal funding for programs to raise the achievement of students identified as being at risk of academic failure. Showing us the money shows what’s important By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A quick note: If you’re reading this editorial, I didn’t win the lottery. And, I suppose, you probably didn’t either (although I do love the idea that someone who just pocketed close to a billion dollars would still spend part of their day — the part not taken up by buying private islands or professional sports teams —reading our fine publication). I don’t want it to sound as if I would be among those who have pledged that their first order of business, should they win the largest lottery jackpot in history, would be to leave everything behind and strike out for the most exotic locale they could find. No, that isn’t me. If I looked down at my ticket and realized it was a winner — that I never again had to worry about a mortgage, or bills, or that funny noise my car was making — the first thing I would do is faint. Once I came to, however, I don’t think I would change very many things. Vacations would be longer — and to more exciting places — but I would still take them with the same people. I’d keep my car, my dog and

my husband (but don’t tell him I said that — keep him guessing). And, no, I probably wouldn’t work anymore. But I can’t imagine too many things I would enjoy doing more than what I do now: Meeting new people, telling great stories, and just generally getting all up in people’s business. So I’d probably try to find a way to do something similar. I’m not saying I’d turn down the money, or that I could not tell you — in under a minute — 50 fun ways I could go about spending it. But, when it comes down to the big-ticket things that really matter, I’ve got pretty much all I need. You’re making that pretend throw-up noise now, aren’t you? That’s OK. I deserve it. But I’m still sticking with what I said. As we wait for the winner to be found, let’s all take a little time to remember all the cherished things we already have in our lives, the things money can’t buy and the things we wouldn’t sell for all the lotto winnings in the world. And, if you do win, please know that I never meant a bad word I’ve said about you, and always thought you had great hair, a fabulous disposition, and a very – very — generous heart.

Letters to the Editor ‘Mailbox challenge’ offers way to show support for Relay Dear Editor, It was Barbara Fleming’s idea. The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life (RFL) theme is “Paint Your World Purple.” The color purple has long been associated with Relay For Life. You may have seen the purple bows that the Goochland RFL committee ties to the lamp posts in Goochland Courthouse each year to show support for Relay. Several months ago, Barbara, a long-time member of the Mt. Gilead Purple Hearts Relay team, decided to take this a step further. She painted her mailbox purple! Then she painted her mom’s mailbox purple. She’s going to paint her daughter’s mailbox purple. Judy Crutchfield, Beverly DuVal and Connie Lewis, also Purple Hearts
members, followed Barbara’s lead and painted their mailboxes purple. Now the Purple Hearts are offering a challenge to everyone in Goochland County whose life has been touched by cancer, to join us by showing your support for our efforts to find a cure for cancer – paint your mailbox purple! All it takes is a can of purple spray paint, a little tape and newspaper to cover your post, flag and numbers, and a few minutes of your time. If you want your mailbox painted but don’t have time, the Purple Hearts will do it for you, for a $10 donation to Relay For Life! Call Connie Lewis at (804) 457-2751 to schedule a time. Relay For Life of Goochland 2016 will be held at
the Goochland Elementary School track from 4 p.m. Saturday, May 21 to 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 22. Goochland’s theme this year is “Wish Upon a Cure.” For information, go to www.RelayForLife. org/GoochlandVA. Connie Lewis Goochland

urns out the place to be on a Saturday night is waiting in line at the local convenience store to purchase a Powerball ticket. That’s especially true when the jackpot is close to a billion bucks. On a strictly unrelated mission, that’s where I ended up as the furor mounted and minutes ticked away until the big drawing destined to change one or more individuals’ lives. I quickly realized I had entered a reality-based field of dreams, and it was easy to politely overhear the conversations of the dozens who waited patiently to purchase their chance at financial immortality. “They won’t be seeing me at work on Monday,” one man shouted.
“If I win, my wife won’t be seeing me tonight,” another retorted. There was a sense of camaraderie in the diverse crowd that only a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow can produce, and the mood was light-spirited. But the dreams were serious. Talks of new homes, new cars, paid mortgages and gifts for relatives filled the air as the line moved slowly toward the overworked cashier. Some had organized folders with numbers clearly selected far in advance. The efficiency indi-
cated these players were not first-timers, and they seemed annoyed at the unusual and inexperienced activity. Others filled out forms to select their lucky numbers, but most allowed the machine to select the numbers for them. “I never pick the numbers and I never watch the drawing,” the man behind me explained to an interested lady. His system was well thought out, and eliminated the responsibility of tracking down the winning numbers or even checking his computergenerated list of numbers. “You go home and wait for the newscast that tells you the winning ticket was purchased at this store,” he continued. see Lotto > 8

Voting machine audit proves accuracy of paper ballot system Contributed report
According to Goochland Electoral Board Chair Robin Lind, a recent audit conducted on Goochland County’s optical scan paper ballot machines has proven them to be 100 percent accurate. “It is with immense relief and great pleasure that I can state categorically we have the PlatinumCadillac of systems,” Lind told the State Board of Elections in Richmond on Friday, Jan. 8. “I am pleased to report that the hand-count of the ballots produced results which were identical to those reported by the optical scan voting machines when compared to the print-outs on the Statements of Results in the custody of the Clerk
of the Court,” Lind said. “This Audit has, in my opinion, proven the absolute reliability of the DS-200 optical scan equipment used in Goochland County. It has further established the wisdom of using paper ballots to ensure the possibility of a physical re-count. And it has re-established the confidence of candidates, electoral board, director of elections and voters in the integrity of the system.” During the Canvass of Results of the Nov. 3, 2015, general election, a pattern of unusual results was observed at the precinct level. Ballots cast for Treasurer and Sheriff in three separate precincts were identical. In a fourth precinct the ballot count was identical for
the candidates for Senate and House of Delegates, and also identical for School Board and Supervisor. However, the results for write-ins and under-votes were different. There were no over-votes. In all instances the candidates ran unopposed. An anomaly in a single race would have been unique in local experience; four anomalies in a single election were beyond anticipated mathematical probability. The figures were brought to the attention of the Department of Elections where there was a similar absence of experience with such a phenomenon. To eliminate the possibility of machine malfunction or program-
ming error, the Goochland County Electoral Board voted unanimously to request permission for an audit of the ballot scanner machines and authorization was granted by the State Board of Elections on Dec. 16. The Audit was conducted on Jan. 6, 2016 in the presence of Eugene Burton of the Department of Elections, the Clerk of the Circuit Court, several outside observers and three of the candidates whose names had been on the ballots. In each of the precincts in which the identical results had been recorded, the Clerk of the Court produced the ballots which were then hand-counted by officers of election sworn in as Audit Officials; the results were compared with the
printed tapes generated by the voting machines on election night. The results matched in every contest. Lind expressed his appreciation to audit officials Sara Reed, Robbin Bryce, Linda Boggs and Marc Moyers, and to Director of Elections Frances Ragland and audit coordinator Wanda Taylor. Goochland County has 10 precincts, plus a Central Absentee Precinct, using DS-200 Optical Scan paper ballot tabulators. Six precincts have used these machines in the past; four used them for the first time in 2015. This is the first time a post-election audit of optical scan paper ballot counting machines has been approved by the State Board of Elections.

LOVE (for less) A
day set aside to shower a loved one with gifts and touching words of affection, Valentine’s Day brightens the often gloomy month of February. Established centuries ago with origins shrouded in mystery, Valentine’s Day has evolved into one of the most popular (and expensive) days of the year. Many couples celebrate Valentine’s Day with cards, gifts and nights out on the town, and such celebrations can stretch budgets. Coming on the heels of post-holiday bills, Valentine’s Day can feel like a costly prospect. Yet, even those on a budget can enjoy a special day to remember without breaking the bank. The following are several frugal ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day. Create your own greeting card. It can be challenging to find cards that offer just the right sentiments. Find a decorative blank card or make one from card stock. Search through your digital photos and print one of the two of you together. Glue on a paper heart border, and then jot down some affectionate sentiments.
lates without even knowing if your valentine will like what’s inside the box. Stick to what you know he or she likes, even if it’s a simple chocolate bar from a convenience store. Go out for a small bite to eat. If youÕre concerned about the cost of an expensive dinner out or anticipate being restricted to a certain menu, plan to dine at home. You can opt to go out for cocktails prior or head to a cafe for dessert and cappuccino afterward. Purchase a rosebush. Bouquets of roses are traditional gifts for Valentine’s Day. However, thanks to the increased demand, the cost of roses tends to increase as Valentine’s Day draws nearer. If you want to save money but still give roses, buy a plant that blooms each year.
Turn older jewelry new again. If a new piece simply isn’t in the budget, consider repurposing an older piece of jewelry that isn’t worn as often. It’s amazing what a new setting on a ring can look like or how stones on a seldomused necklace can be turned into fashionable stud earrings. If you have a good amount of Cleverly wrap favorite chocolate. mismatched gold jewelery lying around, you Chocolate is synonymous with Valentine’s Day, may be able to sell it or have it melted down and and it’s easy to spend a lot on gourmet choco- turned into a beautiful new creation. The best (and worst) foods for heart health Canada, claiming more than 33,000 lives per year. Many factors contribute to the development of heart disease, including smoking, lack of exercise and stress. Diet and whether a person is overweight or obese also can have a direct link to heart health. Diet, particularly for those with diabetes and poorly controlled blood sugar levels, is a major concern. A variety of foods are considered helpful for maintaining a strong and healthy heart

Plan ahead this winter to create eco-friendly landscapes Eco-friendly landscapes can protect the environment and help homeowners save money. While it’s possible to alter landscapes during summer, it’s easier and more cost-effective to plan ahead for eco-friendly landscapes. Planning ahead can ensure homeowners that their lawns and gardens conserve water throughout the spring and summer. Such planning can save homeowners substantial amounts of money when summer temperatures rise and
put a strain on lawns, plants and gardens that need more water than usual. Homeowners who want their landscapes to thrive while benefitting the environment can take the following steps: Research native plants. Native plants typically require considerably less water than exotic plants that do not naturally grow in particular areas. In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that native plants have adapted to local soil conditions, making them
less likely to need fertilizer and more resistant to pests and diseases than non-native plants. Design smart. When designing your landscape layout, group plants according to how much or how little water they need. This prevents overwatering plants that do not need much water, which can harm the plant and lead to unnecessary water waste, and ensures plants that do need substantial amounts of water have those needs met.
Consider the elements. When planting, consider how much natural sunlight each area of the yard gets before planting. Plants planted in areas that are especially exposed to the sun may require extra waterering, as the hot summer sun can cause water to evaporate, depriving plants of the water they need to thrive. In addition to the sun, wind can divert water meant for plants and grass, so plant appropriately in areas that are exposed to sun and wind.— MetroCreative
Disorganized? You may need professional help Many people routinely find themselves confronted with situations that could be made simpler if they were just a little more organized. Whether it’s lost keys, cramped cabinets or misplaced documents, minor
yet inconvenient situations can be mitigated if not eliminated if men and women simply commit to being more organized. Men and women who struggle with organization
Goochland County Administrator Executive Recruitment Public Survey The Goochland Board of Supervisors invites citizens to participate in a survey in the selection process for a new County Administrator. Please visit the following web link to complete a short survey to assist the County in identifying certain key qualifications and traits desired in the selection of an Administrator. https://novisurvey.net/ns/n/zzlte.aspx The survey link will close on Friday, January 15, 2016. may be surprised to learn just how much time and productivity they lose to disorganization. For example, a survey from Ikea found that men and women routinely spend six minutes just looking for their keys. When added up, that’s a substantial amount of time that can be put to better use. Becoming more organized is a popular resolution come New Year’s Day, and many people benefit from hiring professional organizers to make their resolutions a reality. Professional organizers can help men and women reduce clutter in their homes and offices and regain control over their surroundings. Such professionals also can help solve organization problems, and that can help men and women reduce stress. Professional organizers know which strategies work, but men and women should know that not all organizers are the same. Some organizers may work as a hobby or be part of a larger cleaning company, while others are certified in organization. When searching for an organizer, determine if he or she belongs to the National Association of Professional Organizers and/or if an organizer has been certified by the Board of Certification for Professional Organizers¨. While certification may not be necessary to help you organize your home or business, certi-
fied organizers may have more experience. Organizers may specialize in certain areas. Some deal with corporate and business organization, while others help with real estate staging. Look for one who has experience working with people of your ilk. Organizers will want to examine clients’ situations before they develop a plan of action. Therefore, do not feel the need to prepare for the organizer’s arrival by cleaning up, as doing so may only mask the problems you’re having. The organizer will walk through your home or business and assess your needs. Many organizers will suggest you work with them to learn organizational strategies that you can implement on your own so you remain organized for years to come. Check with the organizer to see what type of packages he or she offers. Some packages may be detailed, while others may just provide a foundation for you to become more organized. Getting organized is more than just having a clean space. It’s about taking control of your environment and improving your quality of life. Professional organizers can help accomplish that goal and keep you organized for years to come. —MetroCreative

Goochland’s Troy Swinson grapples with Nottoway’s Sabrina Uhrich in the 132 weight class during the tri-meet at Goochland on Jan. 6, but eventually emerged with a win. Nottoway would win the match.
Wrestling hosts first-ever home meet By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
By all accounts, Goochland’s first year wrestling program is exceeding all expectations and placing a first class competitive team on the mat from its initial match this season. Last week, the program celebrated another milestone as the team hosted its first home meet, a tri-team event with Nottoway and Amelia. Fans packed the gymnasium for the inaugural event,
a good indicator of just how well the new sport has been accepted on campus. It’s the fitting culmination of a vision that began three years ago when Kenneth Bouwens interviewed for a job at Goochland High School. “A lot of people credit me with starting the program but I still remember when I interviewed for a job at Goochland High School three years ago and one of the first things Mr. Newman said to me was, “so I see you have been coach-
ing wrestling for a few years,” Bouwens said. “We don’t have a team, but we want one, how would you feel about starting one?” The packed house impressed the coach, but he wasn’t surprised at the support. “Wrestling is something that has been on this community’s mind for a long time and Coach Nadder (assistant) and I are thrilled we can be a part of making it happen,” Bouwens said. It was, indeed, a group effort
that required a number of supporters. “I would like to thank the community members who were so vocal about their desire to have a wrestling program and to Mr. Newman (principal), Bryan Gordon (AD), Dr. Lane (superintendent) and the school board who have all been supportive of our wrestling program since the very beginning,” Bouwens commented after the first home meet for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs didn’t come up with a win, but did provide
some exciting matches for an appreciative crowd. “We were very excited and nervous to host our first home match,” the coach said. Not satisfied with the results, the coach was impressed by his team’s effort on the mat. “No one ever wants to get beat at home. We have been talking about this night in practice for weeks and the boys have been working hard to prepare. They were very focused and determined to make a statement at this match,” Bouwems
said. The Bulldogs showed improvement against a tough Nottoway team. “We wrestled Nottoway a few weeks back and lost 75 to 3. So a lot of the boys had a point to prove tonight,” Bouwens said. “And even though we lost, the progress was huge. In just a few weeks we were able to close the gap losing to Nottoway by 15 points instead 72 like we did the first time we wrestled see Wrestling> 13

Wrestling continued from >12 them.” Bouwens said the enthusiasm of the crowd inspired the team and played a major role in the improving results. “I think the support of the crowd had a lot to do with our success. The community and student body really showed their support for the team and I think their presence and cheering helped keep some of our guy’s energy up during some tough matches,” he said. But, victories are not always claimed on the mat, and the real wins came with the effort exerted by a young and determined bunch of Bulldog wrestlers. “Coach Nadder and I were both impressed with how tough our boys wrestled. No one went out and gave up or got pinned quickly,” Bouwens said. And for a first year team, the squad has its share of shining stars. “Joshua Hobbs, Brian Herrera and team captain Filiberto Campos are off to a great start this season and are quickly becoming great wrestlers,” Bouwens said. “Sophomore Ethan Kopczynski may be one of the most aggressive and physically strong wrestlers I have ever coached. I am really excited to see how he develops as he learns more technique. I could go on and on because every wrestler on

the team is putting in the work and has had success at some point this season.” All of that adds up to a bright future for a young program that seems destined to claim its spot in an emerging James River District wrestling scene. “I think the team is progressing quickly and by next season I believe we will be a team that makes other teams nervous,” Bouwens said. “One of the biggest things we need to do in order to guarantee a long and successful program is to start either a middle school team and or a strong youth program. Every great wrestling program starts with a strong feeder program,” the coach added. Nottoway coach Lloyd Page had high praise for the Bulldogs and their wrestlers. “They have really improved since the first time we met them. They certainly don’t look like a first year team.” The Bulldogs lost to Nottoway 33 to 48 and Amelia 24 to 39. Hobbs, Daniel Thompson, Troy Swinson, Herrara, Campose and Kopczynski all recorded victories. Midway through the season, Bouwens goals remain unchanged. “My expectations for the rest of this season are very simple, I just want the boys to love the sport of wrestling like I do and Photo by Jim Ridolphi never stop trying to be better Goochland’s Jack Twombly (5) led the Bulldogs against Randolphboth on the wrestling mat and Henry with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Twombly leads Bulldogs in inspired performance
Goochland YMCA to start 10k training team on Jan. 30 Contributed report

training guide with workouts to complete on their own during the week. The training is appropriate for all levels, from walkers to experienced runners. The team will be split into groups of walkers, novice runners and intermediate runners. All levels benefit from the motivation and camaraderie of
the group dynamic, and it’s a great way to meet more people in the Goochland community and find workout partners to continue with after the training ends. Several informational clinics will be held over the course of training, to better prepare participants and help them avoid injuries.
Participants do not need to be members of the YMCA in order to participate, and nonmembers will receive guest passes to visit the Y once a week to workout. A special income-based rate is available for those who qualify. Contact the Goochland Family YMCA for information.
By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
In a season filled with ups and down both on and off the court, the Goochland basketball team played its best half of the campaign against a pesky Randolph Henry squad last week earning a 69-60 victory over the Statesmen. The Bulldogs needed every bit of the inspired effort to hold off the sharp shooting Statesmen who buried seven three point shots in the first half alone. After completing a second half comeback, the Bulldogs fired on all cylinders in the final quarter to gain the victory. “We came out almost lackadaisical and didn’t contest shots,” Bulldog coach Preston Gordon said after the game. “I told them we needed to get back to playing Goochland basketball and doing the things I knew we could do. I told them we were a lot better than this and needed to play more physical.” The Bulldogs amassed a first half lead that stretched to six points in the second quarter, but the Statesmen utilized pinpoint accuracy from the three-point line and made it close at halftime. As the second half began, Randolph Henry hit the offensive go button and opened a seven-point lead when Gordon called an early time out and gathered his troops. From that point, the Bulldogs stormed the boards, found the open man and played aggressive defense to climb back in the contest. When Jack Twombly
notched two inside shots in a row, the Bulldogs took the lead for the final time, protecting it through a furious challenge from the Statesmen. Twombly played inspired basketball scoring 21 points with 10 rebounds and three steals. Following the game, his teammates escorted him to the stands to present the game ball to his mother who is fighting cancer. “She is a true inspiration for all of us,” Gordon said. “These guys are close with each other and support each other.” Gordon said he would like to see the team play two halves of the kind of basketball the team displayed in the second half of the Statesmen game. “I know we are capable of doing that,” he said. With good performances by BJ Snead, who had 17 points, and Twombly, Gordon said other players also stepped up in the win. “Josh Chandler had a great night for us and his confidence is sky high,” Gordon said. “He’s playing with a chip on his shoulder.” The coach met with all of his players earlier in the week in a one on one session that he described as productive. “Tonight was a result of those meetings and we saw them improve on the things we talked about.,” he said.” The Bulldogs wrapped a winning week, with victories over Nottoway and Randolph Henry and after an early week loss at Central Lunenburg. The Bulldogs host Bluestone and Cumberland this week.
