Training done, couple readies to return pup Newton family has spent the last 18 months preparing dog for use as a service animal By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Hudson Kassner, age 4, snacked on a homemade snow cone as he watched a neighbor operating the backhoe Sunday. Kassner was one of hundreds of children who enjoyed playing in the freshly fallen snow last weekend.
When Crozier residents Tom and Jennifer Newton welcomed Leland, a playful, 10-week-old lab/retriever mix puppy, into their home in late 2014, they knew that he wouldn’t be theirs forever. As volunteer trainers with the Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), the two had made a commitment to spend the next 18 months training the dog to become a service dog for individuals suffering from ailments ranging from hearing impairment to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). They also had made a pledge, once that training period was over, to let him go. Now, just three weeks away from turning Leland back over to the CCI training team, the couple is looking back on their journey and marveling at just how much progress the dog has made. Tom, a veterinarian, and his wife have been able to watch Leland grow from a rambunctious, untamed puppy into a well-trained dog ready to move on to the next phase of his training. “It’s amazing to see the development from puppyhood to when they really become team members,” said Tom. “They become so reliable and start doing things that responsible, trained dogs do — it seems like such a short period of time for so much progress to happen.” All that is left is the last step — and that certainly won’t be easy. Fortunately, the day the Newtons turn Leland over to the CCI trainers won’t be the last time they see him. They will receive monthly reports on his progress as he moves through the training, and, once that is completed, see Service dog > 3

To Jennifer, one of the unexpected benefits of working with CCI was the support the couple received as they made their way through the intensive training process. “We got into this because of the dog,” said Jennifer, “but we also discovered that CCI is such an amazing group, and they are so supportive on every level. So we’ve really been able to become a part of this wonderful community.” Tom said people have asked him again and again how he and his wife, once the time comes, will be able to part with the dog that has become such a cherished member of their family. Difficult as it’s going to be, Tom said he’s tried to keep in mind all along that the ultimate goal was to raise a dog that would greatly improve someone else’s quality of life. “We haven’t experienced giving him up yet, so we know it’s going to be very, very hard,” said Tom. “But we know he’s got

Surviving winter’s wallop By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland residents continue to dig themselves out after last weekend’s massive winter storm dropped over 18 inches of snow and ice across the county. While the storm has brought most county activity to a standstill, it also brought out the best in many Goochlanders. Neighbors checked on each other, strangers jumped in to rescue stranded motorists, and plenty of snowbound residents simply tried to make the most of the situation. Crozier resident Liz Boyle took to Facebook Monday to offer an update — and a note of thanks. ‘ “Route 522 is pretty clear and some mysterious angel plowed my driveway this morning,” Boyle wrote. “I love Goochland.” *** In the coming weeks and months, Goochland residents are going to be hearing a lot about Relay For Life, the annual walka-thon held to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Teams will be formed, bake sales will be held, and we here at the Gazette will be keeping you informed of every upcoming event tied to the cause. This year, as the county prepares to host its 11th annual Relay, I’ll be thinking about it just a little differently than I have in years past.

You see, our family was recently made members of a club no one would ever willingly join. On Jan. 17, we lost my husband’s father to cancer, making us among the many families who will lose a loved one this year to this vicious disease. Of course, we’re among the fortunate — we’re didn’t have to go it alone. Family and friends rallied. Notes and cards came by mail. A familiar nurse in the hospital cafeteria, where we’d eaten too many meals, stopped me to give my hand a squeeze. (Note to self: Please don’t forget the simple, transformative power of a hand squeeze when someone needs one most.) As comforting as the immediate support was, there was also the knowledge that there were people out there working around the clock to find new and better therapies, to reduce pain, and to pave the way to a cure for all cancers. Over the years, while covering Relay For Life events for various newspapers, I have met so many people who have turned their own heartbreak and loss into fuel to help support the fight against cancer. In memory of my father-inlaw, we will be supporting Relay once again this year, and we take tremendous comfort in the knowledge that so many are giving so much to help battle this formidable enemy. One dollar at a time, one day at a time, let’s do this together.

Letters to the Editor Goochland a ‘small town with a big heart’ Dear Editor, The holidays have come and gone, but something quite impressive goes on here during that time, and we wanted to share that story. When Goochland Christmas Mother volunteers go into full swing doing their job, we turn to our community for donations, volunteers and caring – family to family. The response we get from our county (and surrounding ones) would truly warm your heart and make you proud! We ask for volunteers to help take applications, pack food boxes, go shopping for wish lists, and wrap all the gifts for 300 plus families. This year volunteers came in record numbers – making short work of this Herculean task. Below is a list of just some of those

Also, organizations that border Goochland contact us to adopt families. NOVA of Virginia Aquatics has adopted six or more families for the last six or so years – providing cribs, car seats, bicycles, strollers, etc., for those families with specific needs. We have many families that adopt other families year after year, and sometimes they adopt more than one family. This is quite a wonderful and caring thing! Some adopt the same family every year, and they build a real connection. Others adopt families with small children so their own children can share in picking out the wish list items. Some request an elderly family. We have such heartwarming stories we could tell about long visits and sharing meals – family to family – and a connection forged throughout the year There are so many, many more individuals that give of their time and provide for our families – too many to men-
tion – but we thank you all! We could not help all of the families who apply without the endless giving of your time and your generosity. It just blows us away every year how many answer our call! The need is growing and we always need each and every one of you. You are the heart and soul of our organization. To us, the real gift is not only making sure that our families have food, warm clothing, and that children have toys to play with, but also the building of our community spirit, in the looking out for each other, and in the teaching our children to have a giving spirit and a kind heart. Goochland and friends – you are a shining example of this. You are the best! And we are so very, very grateful! In 2015, our community, through Goochland Christmas Mother, helped 803 individuals (450 adults and 353 children). Thank you to this year’s Christmas Mother, Diana Gordon, for working so hard to help make this possible. Bulldogs fall short against Powhatan By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland’s BJ Snead (4) is guarded by Powhatan’s John Harris (4) in their matchup on Jan. 20 at Powhatan. Snead was the leading scorer of the game with 24 points, including four 3-point shots. He’s been the key cog in the offense this season for the Bulldogs.
Up by six points at halftime against Powhatan on Jan. 20, the Indians needed a big run in the second half to kick start the offense and have a chance against the Goochland Bulldogs. And, that’s exactly what the Indians were able to do against the Bulldog defense. Despite Goochland’s BJ Snead leading all scorers with 24 points, Powhatan had a second half comeback that led to a 60-52 victory. “We didn’t execute,” Goochland coach Preston Gordon said. “We gave up too many offensive rebounds in both halves. We didn’t execute from the free throw line, we missed way too many free throws. That’s really uncharac-
teristic of how we’d been shooting free throws this season. But, I give credit to Powhatan. They hit some big time shots.” The Bulldogs were 18-of-28 from the free throw line, and those 10 missed point opportunities could have been the difference in the outcome of the game. Two misses in particular came halfway through the second quarter and early in the fourth when the Bulldogs were in the 1-and-1 bonus and the first chance at a two-point play were missed, leaving points on the table. Goochland had gained the lead at the end of the first quarter with a five-point run by Snead, and extended the lead after a six-point Goochland run that started the second quarter. Out of the break, Powhatan’s
Justin Deleon had four quick points, interrupted by one Goochland free throw, to cut the lead down to just two points. After another Goochland free throw was good after a technical foul, Austin Washburn hit a three to tie the game at 30. After a Goochland basket briefly put them back in the lead, the Indians went on a 6-0 run, in large part thanks to a Davis 3-point shot. The Indians had a four point lead at that point, and it was a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game. While Powhatan did hold the lead, Goochland continued the pressure the rest of the game. Snead hit three of four free throws after being fouled and then having two more added see Bulldogs> 13
Close loss could be motivating factor Goochland High School basketball coach Preston Gordon emerged from the locker room. I went up to him and asked, “So, how do you feel after that one?” “Frustrated,” he replied. By Billy Fellin “Disappointed.” Sports Editor Then a pause as Gordon collected his thoughts before he After his team battled hard went into the missed chances, against Powhatan on Jan. 20, the lack of offensive rebounds,

and the other things that he felt contributed to the loss. His frustration and disappointment were understandable. His Bulldogs had, appropriately, fought like bulldogs against the Powhatan High School Indians in the final of a home-and-home series. The Indians had defeated Goochland earlier in the season in Goochland and the Bulldogs came into the game with a vis-
ible sense of determination. They almost pulled it off in front of as raucous crowd that the Powhatan gym has seen this season. All that determination, all that vigor to try and get a win, especially as close as the game was with the Bulldogs pulling within a few points near the end of the game as BJ Snead found his stroke and was taking the Powhatan defense by
surprise. But, it just wasn’t enough. That’s just how sports is sometimes. So, the Bulldogs and Gordon were left with frustration and disappointment after a game that they could have won slipped through their fingers. However, this team has showed grit. This team has shown perseverance, especially
after losing a key piece of their offense in Jack Twombly. But, don’t you want to see that frustration, that kind of determination, especially from the coach after a tough loss? I think you do, especially if you’re a Goochland basketball fan. Goochland had its chances, and the Bulldogs let Powhatan see Motivating > 13

Bulldogs continued from >12 on due to another Powhatan technical foul, cutting the lead to five. Powhatan’s John Harris hit a 3-point shot, but Snead answered with one of his own. A five-point personal run for Snead cut the lead down to two points. But, the Indians were able to stave off the Bulldogs with strong defense and making free throws when it counted. Deleon hit three of his final four, including two of two at the 1:20 mark to push the Indians ahead by five and Harris hit two of his final two. When Goochland did have the ball under the minute mark, they were unable to execute to put any pressure on Powhatan and were forced to foul when the Indians were able to outrebound them after a missed shot, or turned the ball over.

“We had a few uncharacteristic plays, in terms of decision making, offensively and defensively,” Gordon said. “That turned into fouls, which created certain guys coming out of the game for a certain amount of time. That messes up our rotation and messed up our flow. That really hurt us. I would definitely say that was another element that was key for us. It continues to be a backbreaker.” Throughout the game, Goochland found itself in foul trouble, although the players that came off the bench did produce some valuable minutes for the Bulldogs. “The guys that came off the bench produced,” Gordon said. “They hit some shots, made some free throws.” Behind Snead, who was red hot from 3-point range with four against the Indians, junior Josh Chandler contributed 19 points.

Ott signs with Georgia State
Goochland volleyball’s Madelyn Ott, along with her parents James and Jennifer Ott, signed her offiical letter of intent to Georgia State for volleyball on Nov. 11 at Goochland High School, just 10 days before leading the Bulldogs to the state championship win over Marion 3-2. Ott was named to the Times-Dispatch All-Metro team and was the Group 2A state player of the year.

take advantage of some opportunities throughout the game. But, the Bulldogs were able to get their offense going and have played with teams all season long. Goochland played Bluestone, the team that leads the district and conference, and only lost by nine on Jan. 13. They played third place Central Lunenburg though, falling by four, on Jan. 4.
This team is close and this Goochland squad can use that frustration, determination, and more to fuel their fire as the regular season’s end is not too far off in the horizon. Five games remain on the schedule pending any rescheduled games from the snowstorm that swept through the state this past weekend. Those five games could tell a lot about this Bulldogs team. Nottoway, the team that is directly below Goochland in the standings, is up next on
Friday. Then, Buckingham and Central Lunenburg, followed by Amelia and the season wraps up on the road against bottomdwelling Randolph-Henry. The Bulldogs have defeated Nottoway, Amelia, and Randolph-Henry this season and lost to Buckingham and Central Lunenburg. So, can Goochland get to 10-10 and end the game on a five-game winning streak? Sure, of course, they can. Regardless, if that fire and determination that Gordon
showed after the loss to Powhatan is anything to go off of, the Bulldogs are not a team to be counted out as the regular season comes to a close and the playoffs will begin. Frustration and disappointment can be fantastic motivators. And, maybe those motivators can fuel the Bulldogs to an impressive end of the season and playoff run. What is the most challenging thing a continued from >3 dialogue facilitator want a better world, we must might face?
Can you describe a moment during a recent event that drove home why be our “better selves.” Civil dialogue helps us to go beyond Pogue: To quickly confront these discussions are our opinions, positions and the difficult participant who’s so important?
Pogue
information about a topic to find new insights, perspectives and understandings about ourselves and one another.
unwilling to follow the previously agreed upon Guidelines and may even verbally attack another. The facilitator must enforce the Guidelines to maintain group safety and civility.
Pogue: There are moments in dialogue when you look around the circle and observe that people are riveted by the stories of others and you feel humble and
gratified to help make this kind of sharing possible in today’s contentious world. Also, when the dialogue draws to a close and people say that they didn’t realize how much they were missing a meaningful conversation that both educated and inspired them. New people are surprised at how open everyone was and how the quality of the group sharing enriched them mentally, emotionally and even
spiritually. Since the need is for more trained facilitators in the western counties,Margaret Reynolds and William Quarles will provide a Training in Conversation Cafe (www.conversationcafe. org) at the Goochland Library, on Saturday, Jan. 30 from 10:30 to 12:30 (free to students and teachers). The same day at 1:30 to 3:30 I will add an Advanced Training for those who have completed the Basic Training
