Amazing Raise ends run after five years Fundraising event raised millions for local organizations By Roslyn Ryan Editor
After five years and millions of dollars raised for area nonprofit organizations, The Amazing Raise is ending. The fundraising effort, created in 2011 by The Community Foundation Serving Richmond & Central Virginia, “had a good five-year run,” said Sherrie Brach, the organization’s president and CEO. Now, however, the group will focus its efforts on finding new ways to help nonprofits raise needed funds. To Sally Graham, executive director of Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, saying goodbye to the program will be tough. “The Amazing Raise benefitted the nonprofit community, including Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, in so many ways,” Graham said, noting that it wasn’t simply about the amount of money they were able to raise. “The Amazing Raise helped us build public awareness, network with other nonprofits, see Raise > 3

Resident’s play offers audiences new way to see history By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A
s winter drags on, many Goochland County residents are likely looking forward to the warmer weather ahead, and the promise of spending spring days enjoying the outdoors. Fortunately, the county has a wealth of options available for those looking to log a little park time, and will soon add one more. According to Goochland County Parks, Recreation and Facilities director Derek Stamey, the county will break ground in the coming weeks on Matthews Park, a 36-acre facility located in the western end of the county. Featuring a playground and several miles of trails, as well as plenty of parking, Matthews Park will be the county’s fourth such facility and the third constructed since Stamey was hired by the county six years ago. The park will be built on land owned by the county since 2010, and will offer the western end of see Park > 4

In 2007, frustrated with traditional methods of sharing the lessons of African-American history he had always enjoyed, Goochland resident Sekou Shabaka wrote his first play and presented it to an audience. Almost immediately, he said he knew he’d stumbled upon something wonderful. Unlike the lectures that he’d given in the past, the plays — which combine music with factual portrayals of notable black leaders and innovators — grabbed his audience’s attention and held it. Now, as he prepares to present his fourth production on Feb. 27, Shabaka said he is hoping to enjoy a similar reception. “Dr. Ossian Sweet’s Bitter Detroit,” in which Shabaka plays both the title character and famed lawyer and civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson, is based on the true story of a 1925 murder trial that captured national headlines. Sweet, a successful AfricanAmerican physician working in Detroit, Michigan, in the 1920s, was charged with murder after he and several family members and friends were forced to defend Sweet’s home from an angry mob angered by the fact that Sweet had purchased see Shabaka > 3

Participating in the Amazing Raise aligned with those goals while helping us increase support. We will continue our current fundraising efforts and look forward to partnering with the Community Foundation in the future.” When The Amazing Raise began in 2011, small organizations had limited access to online giving, and some donors were hesitant to give online. That picture has changed with advances in technology. Brach said she is proud of what The Amazing Raise was able to accomplish but also is focused on the future. “We’ve built some capacity,” Brach said. “We’ve been a leader in that space. We’ve

raised over $7 million. It’s hit the mark in giving nonprofits more capacity in online giving. It’s time to think about the next thing we can evolve to.” During the five years of Richmond’s fundraising event in September, national attention has gravitated to Giving Tuesday in the week after Thanksgiving. The Community Foundation plans to support local nonprofits in efforts to promote Giving Tuesday, Brach said, although details remain to be determined. “You don’t want to be duplicating efforts. You want to connect to the things you think will ultimately grow,” Brach said. “Giving Tuesday is the one that is getting a lot of national traction.” One of the original goals of The Amazing Raise was to build awareness of and participation in GiveRichmond among donors and nonprofits, Brach added. More than half of the estimated 1,200 nonprofit organizations in the area have profiles now on GiveRichmond,
she said. “We have the big ones and many small ones. It’s a pretty rich database.” Participation in The Amazing Raise had leveled off in terms of active participants, so that most of the $150,000 in baseline prize money provided by The Community Foundation each year was claimed by about 30 of the most engaged organizations, Brach added. In 2015, the foundation’s total investment in The Amazing Raise reached $200,000, including the cost of prizes, technology, and an estimated 700 hours in staff time, said spokeswoman Kim Russell. An announcement sent to Amazing Raise participants about the event ending said that The Community Foundation “will continue to be a community thought leader and facilitate opportunities that bring donors and nonprofits together to create long-term impact for the region.” Richmond Times-Dispatch staff writer Katherine Calos contributed to this report.
It is through sharing his plays, however, that he feels he is truly helping to educate community members both young and old about the rich history and noted accomplishments of African-Americans. “There are so many unsung heroes,” Shabaka said. “I want to celebrate those people who have really done something, because they are worth knowing about.”

Park continued from >1 Goochland a much-needed space for recreation. “It is exciting to see Goochland County create another park for our citizens and visitors to enjoy,” said Beth Moore, president of the Friends of GoochlandParks organization. “We are blessed to have such beautiful and scenic land in our county and Matthews Park will be a wonderful addition to the open spaces available for recreation.” The parks already available to county residents — including Hidden Rock Park, Leakes Mill Park and Tucker Park — will all be getting upgrades in the coming months as well. “What we really try to do is to have something for everyone,” said Stamey, but he added that the department also has made a concerted effort to maximize every dollar in its budget. To Goochland Board of Supervisors chairman Bob Minnick, the county’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department has set the bar high when it comes to budgeting and spending wisely. “The recreation facilities have been a direct beneficiary of generous donations and great volunteers, in-kind contributions, as well as the judicious use of “naming rights” and the use of regional grant money,” Minnick said. “Mr. Stamey and his staff have made all this and more happen with creativity, great management, and terrific communication.” Minnick pointed out that Stamey’s staff does the vast majority of the trails and site work throughout the county, including maintenance, upkeep, engineering oversight, and planning and development. “If ever there was a case study in doing more with less, our Parks and Rec Department would be on the front cover,” Minnick said. More projects are planned in the coming weeks — provided the weather cooperates — including a new kayak and canoe launch in Tucker Park, and a new playground at Hidden Rock Park. The Parks and Rec Department’s new initiative, Active GVA, which helps connect parkgoers with self-directed activities and new ways to make use of the county’s parks and complexes, has already seen 500 people sign up. Even as Stamey battled the winter weather the weekend of Jan. 22 — as the facilities director, he also is responsible for clearing snow from county lots — Stamey found it hard to conceal his excitement about the future of the county’s recreation offerings. “Whether you’re an outdoors person or not,” he said, “I think we really have a lot of wonderful and diverse things to offer.”

Active GVA program already proving popular Following in the footsteps of Richmond’s popular Active RVA movement, a project launched by the Richmond Sports Backers in 2012 to help promote community wellness, Goochland’s Department of Parks and Recreation has rolled out the county’s own version. Dubbed Active GVA, the initiative serves as a promotional vehicle for all of the outdoor activities and health-focused amenities the county already has, said Parks and Rec director Derek Stamey.
Stamey stressed that the project is essentially a rebranding of what is already available and does not require additional funding. “What we want to do is focus on highlighting the self-directed recreational opportunities that already exist,” Stamey said, including local parks, nature trails and gym facilities. “We really want to get people out and promote a healthy lifestyle.” One feature of the Active GVA program
is signage with QR codes placed at local parks and trails. These signs allow users to “check in” by using their phones to scan the codes. The data collected will help the Parks and Rec staff examine how the facilities are being used, Stamey said, and allow them to better serve residents’ needs in the future. For more information about Active GVA, visit http://www.goochlandva.us/ or call (804) 556-5854. — Roslyn Ryan

Stories of heroism should be preserved By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Recently, while enjoying a long dinner with a good friend, the conversation turned to a deceased relative of his who had been a key player in the fight for Civil Rights in his home state. The story of the man’s life, and his heroic efforts on behalf of the movement, were truly fascinating, and I couldn’t help but ask my friend why he had never mentioned any of it before. The answer, though heartbreaking, was not entirely unexpected: My friend had simply not learned of his loved one’s past until recently, just after the man passed away. My friend had been able to glean some information from other relatives, but so many questions remained. It was one more small reminder of just how important our personal stories are, and the critical need to pass them on the next generation. The truth of the matter is that, when it comes to the fight for Civil Rights, just about all of us know someone who has a story to tell — and by no means is that pool limited only to those who shed blood for the cause.

All around us are people whose small sacrifices and tiny rebellions, whose efforts to demonstrate their own selfworth to those unwilling to see them as equals, would eventually change the world as we know it. With each passing generation, we move further away from a country where forced segregation was the norm and closer to an America where people truly are judged based on the content of their character. However, as we leave racial segregation and the historic figures who fought it behind, we run the risk of losing the personal stories that remind us of the tremendous, often unfathomable achievements made by those who came before us. This February, as we celebrate Black History Month, make an effort to ask questions, and to dig a little deeper. If you know someone has a story to tell, ask. If you have a story to tell, share. Write the stories down, record them, or simply commit them to memory and share them with someone else. It may not be the only way to honor those who paved the way, but it’s certainly worth the effort.

VECF awards $180K to support school readiness Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond, a school readiness initiative established to help young children throughout the region achieve lifelong success, has received a grant of $180,000 from the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation (VECF). Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond, established in 2006, is one of the first Smart Beginnings coalitions in the Commonwealth. Now housed at the Greater Richmond Chamber Foundation, the initiative is a partnership among public and private agencies, businesses, and individuals working to enhance the quality of early childhood care and learning for young children, so they will be well-prepared to enter the workforce. This financial investment from VECF will benefit young children in the cities of Richmond, Colonial Heights and Petersburg, as well as in Chesterfield, Charles City, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Powhatan counties.
Letters to the Editor Comments on Trump candidacy were short-sighted at best Dear Editor, The dogs of Hell have been let loose on Donald Trump, and apparently Roslyn Ryan wants to get in on the action. Her piece, “Trump Candidacy Telling” was published in the Jan. 20 issue of The Mechanicsville Local. I’ve been reading Donald Trumps’s obituary for a long time now, and

If you are a school-aged child and there’s snow on the ground, life grinds to a halt around 4 p.m. each day to await the announcement of
those who months ago claimed that his high numbers and lead in the polls could not be sustained just won’t give up. Ms. Ryan gives the excuse for her having no argument to support her absolute certainty that Trump can’t be elected by stating, “Listing the reasons why would take up more space than we have available …” Darn, couldn’t she have given at least one reason? She adds insult to the impotency of her views by stating:
“No, I’m not concerned about Trump sitting in the Oval Office, or about him having access to the Nuclear Codes. I’m more concerned about what his potential candidacy says about us.” I’m rather certain that what she means by “us” is the rest of us. Apparently Trump supporters, in her view, lack the intelligence and virtue that she herself embodies. Michael Reardon Mechanicsville
school closings for the next day. It’s the only serious threat to an otherwise unencumbered snow day, eight hours of non-school-related fun that can only be dampened by the impending doom of a reopening announcement. So, each day, as temperatures increased and more snow melted last week, we would gather in front of the television to receive the latest updates on whether our week of fun
would end early. I attempted to explain to my kids that they were already far ahead of the game with three unexpected holidays that allowed for unlimited sledding and other ice-covered activities. I also explained the responsibility of making decisions on whether to reopen school and some of the factors that can affect that decision. see Ridolphi > page 7

Through karate, couple changes lives
continued from >6 I told them how superintendents from around the area ride every road in the county to decipher just how bad the roads are and if students can safely travel to and from school. And, then there are the unending number of sidewalks and parking lots that must be cleared at every campus to ensure children can return to school minus the hazards of ice and snow. I don’t envy the people who are charged with making closing decisions. It seems like a no win job, that, in the end, makes you a hero to some and a villain to others. First, you have thousands of children who prefer a nonopening in the best of conditions. Conversely, there’s a large group of parents equally interested but for different reasons. Snow days require altered child care plans, missed time at work and uncertain schedules for parents who must
remain flexible as the decisions are made. School systems, in their infinite wisdom, include snow days in their regular schedules to allow for the missed time, but a serious snowstorm like the one last week can threaten those plans. When the announcement finally came down regarding schools on Wednesday, my children were not happy. Their schools would reopen Wednesday on a twohour delay. That news was partly palatable, but the accompanying announcement caused a furor at my house. To make up for the three missed days, Henrico County Public Schools students would not get a previously scheduled half-day off on Friday, and Monday’s Presidents Day holiday was cancelled. “Can they do that?” one of my children asked in disbelief. “They already promised us those days,” another said. I quickly interjected that schools are required to be in session a required number of
days in a school year in order to qualify for state and federal aid, an explanation that didn’t deter their outcries. “They can’t change the schedule after it’s already made. They can’t do that,” my daughter said defiantly. “They can and they did” was my answer. As a parent, I’m thankful for responsible leaders who take the safety and welfare of children seriously, and I don’t question their sincerity in making hard decisions like closing schools for inclement weather. Explaining those decisions to thousands of kids who think snow days are a rite of passage is a much more puzzling task. Even the two-hour delay couldn’t remove the frowns on their faces as they walked past the sleds, picked up a backpack full of books, and walked out for their first day of school in almost a week. “I still say it’s not fair,” my daughter mumbled on the way out. Say hello to life.

Ask many Goochland citizens about their experiences with karate and you will quickly learn about the teachings of one man: Mark Wilds. For over 35 years, Wilds has helped shape individuals young and old as they explore the art of the sport and the life lessons that come with it. Under his tutelage, Wilds has observed the physical and mental growth of many participants, including a number of black belt students. Wilds originally got involved with karate as a way for he and his wife Debbie to stay active. The two quickly fell in love with karate and soon recruited their family into the sport. In

Dear Grateful Reader, Gratitude is one of the greatest of all virtues. By simply saying or writing
“Thank-you” to return a kindness takes only a moment and can make such a positive impact. When it comes to intensifying the happiness of others, the time is always right to show your heartfelt appreciation.

Dear Fern, A good friend and I have been engaged in a debate over once particular point of etiquette. I say that there is no act of kindness too small to warrant a thankyou note - I tend to send them for everything, often simply because I want someone to know they are appreciated. My friend, however, who is very gracious and well-mannered, seems to think that thankyou notes should only be written on certain occasions, usually when someone gives you a gift or does something nice that is outof-the-ordinary. Fern, I am very curious as to what you think. Is there ever a wrong time to send a thank you?

Residents encouraged to get ‘heart healthy’ Contributed report
Buying your loved one’s chocolates and cards because it is Valentine’s Day? February also is National Heart Month. This is the time to focus on the love that comes from the heart AND on healthy hearts. According to the U.S. Department of Health Services, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. In fact, 1 in every 4 deaths is related to heart disease. But there’s good news. There are several things to do to improve “heart health” so that we can be here for our loved ones for many Valentine’s Days to come. Here are just a few suggestions for fighting heart disease from the American Heart Association: Get Active – by taking daily walks, or any other activity that makes you get up and move Eat a healthy diet Get six – eight hours of sleep every night Manage stress Quit smoking and stay away from second hand smoke
Get regular health screenings from your doctor The medical staff at Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) conduct health screenings and yearly physicals to qualifying individuals in order to meet heart health goals during February and year round. In fact, GFCFS has two in-house cardiologists ready to do heart screenings. In 2015, GFCFS was able to provide over 2,500 physicals and health screenings to Goochland County residents who would not otherwise have access to healthcare. GFCFS also now offers a new free Smoking Cessation Program to help clients quit smoking. Goochland’s BJ Snead (4) hits a 3-point shot for the Bulldogs in the first half of Goochland’s game against Buckingham on Feb. 1. Snead led the Bulldogs with 30 points, but the chance at a win fell short in the last minute of the game.
Bulldogs’ late comeback falls short By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
If one thing can be said about the Goochland Bulldogs basketball team this season, it is that they are never out of a game until the final horn sounds. On Monday against Buckingham, the Bulldogs once again showed that the team has an immeasurable amount of fight in them. Down double-digits with
2:15 left in the game, the Bulldogs were able to climb back within striking distance of the Knights, but ultimately fell 66-58. Goochland’s offense was handily led by BJ Snead, who had 30 points for Goochland. “Sometimes, I think he knows he’s our number one guy,” Bulldogs coach Preston Gordon said. “And, he puts the whole team on his shoulders. Sometimes he doesn’t need to do that because there are other
guys that are willing to step up and make shots.” At the 2:15 mark, Goochland trailed by 11 before a spurt short four-point run, including a 3-pointer from Deion Harwood, brought the game within seven. Josh Chandler had a chance to make it more than a fourpoint run in the middle of it, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 attempt. Snead also had the chance to add another point to the run, making one
of his pair. Off Snead’s miss, however, Goochland was able to rebound the ball and a steal attempt from Buckingham knocked the ball out of bounds and possession went to the Bulldogs. Snead attempted a 3-point shot on the next play, but it was off the mark, and Buckingham rebounded. However, the Knights got careless and threw the ball out of bounds on a long pass attempt, and Goochland had
another shot. Colten Johnson drove into the lane on the Goochland possession, but his layup wouldn’t fall and Buckingham was able to rebound and keep possession, and a foul sent them to the line. The Knights were 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game, and while Goochland was able to get two more shots to fall, it wasn’t enough to overcome Buckingham.
Buckingham also was effective from the foul line the entire game, going 18-of-25 (72 percent) from the line. Goochland led early and had a two point lead after the first quarter, with four 3-point shots accounting for 12 of their 15 points. But, the Knights went on an 8-0 run to start the second quarter, which opened see Bulldogs> 14

Goochland hosted ‘Purple Out’ Tuesday By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
On Tuesday, the Goochland Bulldogs boys basketball team hosted a “Purple Out.” This cancer awareness initiative will be bringing awareness to pancreatic, lung, and prostate cancer. Pancreatic cancer is represented by the color purple, and will be the main color of the night. A member of the Goochland basketball family is battling pancreatic cancer. Goochland assistant coach AJ Nash’s mother passed away due to lung cancer, and coach Preston Gordon’s father had prostate cancer. “I just got the idea over the snow,” Gordon said. “I just

thought we needed to do this for our community.” Gordon contacted Goochland’s opponent for Tuesday, Central Lunenburg, and their coach Mike McGrath agreed to help with the fundraising, with their players selling the purple T-shirts as well. Both teams will wear the purple t-shirts during warmups and the crowd was encouraged to wear purple to the game as well. The T-shirts were sold for $10 and the proceeds will benefit a member of the Goochland basketball family battling cancer. Photo by Dave Lawrence/Mechanicsville Local Gordon said the shirt will Benedictine 285-pounder Ian Williams pins Hanover’s Mac Patrick in a tri-meet tournament that included Benedictine on Wednesday, be purple and have ribbons Jan. 20. representing the three cancers.
Goochland’s zone defense and were able to start getting buckets to fall, especially in the second half. “We know how good their athletes are,” Gordon said. “Not taking anything away from the Buckingham players, but they’re better penetrators than they are shooters, for the most part. We told our guys, we needed to force shots. (Buckingham’s BJ Gough) hit some key shots at key moments in the game.” Gough, Leon Ragland and Tariq Gough all had 15 points for the Knights. Goochland has three game scheduled this week and will look to bounce back from the setback against Buckingham.
up a seven point lead that would ultimately be one that Goochland wouldn’t be able to overcome. After the early success from 3-point range, the consistency from beyond the arc disappeared for the Bulldogs. Goochland was 4-of-7 in the first quarter from 3-point range, but would only make four more 3-point shots the rest of the game. “We didn’t make shots in the second half,” Gordon said. “Not like we did in the first half. We just couldn’t get shots to fall.” Billy Fellin can be reached at While the Bulldogs weren’t able to get their shots to fall, wfellin@powhatantoday.com or the Knights had figured out on Twitter @BillyFellin.
Cadets get tri-match win By Dave Lawrence Contributing Writer
MECHANICSVILLE – Three of the best high school wrestling programs gathered at Hanover High School on Jan. 20. Benedictine swept the night against Hanover and Lee-Davis and left while the Hawks and Confederates ended the night with an intense match before a noisy local crowd full of Hanover and Lee-Davis partisans. Benedictine was missing a couple of all-American wrestlers, but the Cadets managed a 40-31 victory over Lee-Davis in the first match of the night and a 42-33 victory over Hanover
in the second match. “We’re obviously missing some of our best kids – two of our captains – and we had to step up,” said Benedictine head coach Ryan Hall. “And we did, from top to bottom. I’m real proud of my guys. I tell them every day we’ve got to roll with the punches and believe in each other and just go out and wrestle as hard as you can.” Hall credited his big men – Henry Young at 195 pounds, Isaiah Jones at 220 and Ian Williams at 285 – for bringing in the victories. The trio accounted for five pins in six matches. “They dominated when they needed to dominate and
sealed the deal for us,” Hall said. “I’ve got the best ’95, 220 and heavy combo in the state.” All three wrestlers credited their success to their training. “As a team, we work very hard in the [training] room all week long,” Young said. “Coach Hall teaches aggression, staying on your offense – and I felt good. I had a couple of quick pins because I felt like they weren’t ready for me.” Williams said relentless aggressive is key. “Each match we realized that we could not let up,” Williams said. “Like my dad always tells me, ‘You’ve got to crush an ant with a hammer.’ ” Jones said the Cadets, with one of the most storied wres-
tling programs in the area, have high expectations that spurs them on. “When you come out, you’re expected to win,” Jones said. “It’s not like a chance – it’s expected, no matter how far we’re down.” Hall was more than pleased with the results. “We did great,” Hall said. “Lee-Davis and Hanover – Hanover has great wrestling, period. Lee-Davis has really improved. “We knew coming in tonight we were wrestling the two best public schools in the Central Region-Richmond area. We knew we were in some battles, and we knew we had to grind it out.”

instrumental in preserving Bandy Field as a park and, he worked with Middlesex County to bring drinking water to residents. Red Dog was a man of action and he lived totally in the present. If the wind was up, he was on the water, sailing. If the snow was falling, he was skiing on the slopes. And, if the sun was shining, he was on the golf course. If the hounds were speaking, he was astride a horse and not far behind. Indeed, his greatest passion may have been fox hunting; that sport brought together his love of the land, the excitement of the chase, the intrigue of hound work, the close relationship between rider and horse and
the camaraderie among his friends and fellow fox hunters. At the Deep Run Hunt Club, he served as Master of Foxhounds twice, once from 1980 to 1985 and a second time from 2001 to present. Among his many roles as Master, he worked hard to ensure that Deep Run would have open country for hunting. Most recently, Red Dog found his way back to summers spent at Beaver Creek Farm. Following a tip from fellow MFH Polly Bance, he learned that Sunnyside Farm in Fluvanna County was up for sale. At the time the farm had not been lived in for several decades; the buildings were in disrepair, and the

fields were overgrown to head height. Nonetheless, Red Dog had a vision. He mowed and cleaned up fields, fenced pastures and cleared miles of trails. With the help of his daughter, Janie, he restored barns and outbuildings. Sunnyside also became the center of his land conservation efforts in Fluvanna County; he put easements on land he owned and convinced and guided neighbors through the process. As a result, several thousand acres of land have been protected there. At Sunnyside he could be found on the back of a horse or behind the wheel of a tractor; that was his meditation. Red Dog is survived by his wife, Jane Ellis
Covington; his daughter, Elizabeth Marshall Covington; and her sons, Marshall Hairston Humphries and Ellis Covington Humphries; his daughter, Jane Covington Motion and her husband, Andrew; and their daughters, Lillibet and Mary; his son, Jimmy Covington and his wife, Melissa; his sister, Anne Wilson Covington Thompson; as well as nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Goochland County. In lieu of flowers, please send gifts to St. Mary’s Church and to St. Christopher’s School Foundation.

Think you know all about February? Here we offer a few little-known facts about the month that boasts fewer days but plenty of important dates
F
ebruary is the shortest month of the year, but many people have no idea why that is. February is the only month to have fewer than 30 days, but there is no scientific reason behind that distinction, though there have been various changes to the calendar throughout the centuries, and eventually February became what it is today. The Romans developed a 10 month calendar that began with the Spring equinox in March and ended in December. There is belief that what is now February was overlooked when this calendar was created, as winter weather had little to do with the harvest in the northern hemisphere, where Rome is located. Romans essentially considered the winter a period of time with no distinctive months. When the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, took to the throne in 713 BC, he had plans to make the calendar more accurate by synchronizing it with the actual lunar year, which is roughly 354 days long. Thus, two new months, January and February, were added to the end of the calendar. Both January and February had 28 days. At the time, even numbers were considered bad luck, and these months were not looked upon favorably by the king. So he decided to make changes once more and added a day to January to make it 29 days long. February was left untouched, remaining an “unlucky” month and one devoted to honoring the dead and performing rites of purification, as the word February comes from februare, which means “to purify.” February remained the last month of the year for roughly 200 years until the calendar was reevaluated and February was reassigned as the second month, with January being the start of the new year. This new 355-day calendar simply could not stay in sync with the seasons because it did not account for the amount of time it takes the Earth to orbit the sun. Therefore, an extra “month” of 27 days was added after February 23 each year to play catch-up. Sometimes this extra month was overlooked or not scheduled in time, continuing the calendar conundrum. Julius Caesar was responsible for tackling calendar problems further when he was in power. He wished to make the calendar solar-based, like the one Egyptians used, instead of the older lunar-based calendar. This led to the creation of the Julian calendar. Ten days were added to the calendar year in various months, and February was increased every four years (leap year) to 29 days to coordinate the calendar year to the solar cycle of roughly 365.2425 days. February remains the shortest month of the year.

February, the shortest month of the calendar year, includes holidays such as Groundhog’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras.
Through the years there has been no widespread attempt to reorganize the calendar once more to even out the months and give extra time to February. As a result of the shorter number of days, February has some unique attributes. In common years, February can pass without a single full moon. The next time this will happen is in 2018. Once every six years, February is the only month that has four, full seven-day weeks. February starts on the same day of the week as March and November in common years, and on the same day of the week as August on leap years. February ends on the same day of the week as October every year. In leap years, it is the only month that begins and ends on the same weekday. People born on a leap year technically celebrate their birthday only once every four years, but most observe it on the 28th. Celebrities born on February 29 include Tony Robbins, Antonio
Sabato, Jr., Mervyn Warren, and Dennis Farina. Despite its status as the shortest month, February is packed with many events, including Valentine’s Day and Groundhog’s Day. Americans celebrate the birth of two presidents in February, as well as Black History Month. Mexicans celebrate Flag Day in February, while residents of St. Lucia celebrate their Independence Day. February is also a time for families, especially in Canada, where Family Day is celebrated on the third Monday of the month in many provinces. February is also an important month for sports fans, as two teams will face each other in the Super Bowl on the first Sunday of February. No one really knows for certain why February was relegated to the shortest month. However, with so much trivia and special events surrounding the month, it is still a special time of year.
