hanks to the generosity of one young Goochland resident, pets currently housed at the county’s animal shelter received a very special gift last week. For the past two years, Ashley Marmer, 6, has asked that friends bring donations of food and pet supplies to her birthday parties instead of gifts. The result? A truckload of goodies for local animals in need, a very appreciative Animal Control Staff, and two very proud parents. “Both my wife and I are animal lovers and it’s really rubbed off on our daughter,” said Ashley’s father, Michael Marmer, just after he and his wife Marylee helped their daughter carry the last of the boxes and bags into the Photo by Matthew Brooking Ashley Marmer, right, with Goochland Animal Shelter coordinator Julie Lawshelter on Hidden Rock Lane last Thursday. Even as she watched other children receive toys and rence, dropped off a carload of pet supplies at the Goochland County Animal Shelter last Thursday. Have you ever wondered about the dayto-day reality faced by Goochland County law enforcement officers? If so, the Goochland County Sheriff’s Citizens Academy may be just what you’ve been waiting for. A free 10-week class designed to give residents a close-up insider look at the law enforcement world, the program features sessions on topics ranging from the role of animal control, to dispatch procedures, to investigations and traffic stops. For academy alumni Larry Proffitt, taking part in the program offered a chance to understand just how challenging an officer’s job can be. As a life-long Goochland resident, Proffit said he didn’t expect to get nearly as much out of the class as he did. “You think you know everything about your county,” he said, but he soon found himself delving into new areas of the community and examining aspects of law enforcement he had never considered. “You know, it’s not just ‘Here’s a squad see Academy > 2

Academy continued from >1 car,’ ” Proffitt said, noting that his favorite part of the program was the ride-along he and each of his dozen or so classmates were able to take with a deputy. For Proffitt, the experience ended up being one he said he’ll never forget. Before the night was over, he’d been able to witness several traffic stops, a water rescue, and two highspeed pursuits. While Proffitt’s ridealong experience was likely more exciting than most, he
insists that, even without it, the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy offered more than enough excitement and fascinating insider knowledge. “You really gain such a greater appreciation for what these guys do,” Proffit said. “It’s well worth the time.” Registration is now open for Sheriff’s Citizens Academy, which begins Tuesday, March 1. Participants will meet each Wednesday for 10 weeks. For more information or an application, call Sgt. Steven Creasey at (804) 556-5349 or visit www.goochlandsheriff. org.

Lane is Region 1 Superintendent of the Year Leader says sites remain focused on maximizing potential of all county students By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Just three years into his tenure as the head of Goochland County Public Schools, superintendent James F. Lane has already gotten plenty of practice accepting accolades for the school division’s achievements. T h e h o n o r announced last week during the monthly m e e t Lane ing of the Goochland County School Board, however, was decidedly more personal. On Friday, Feb. 12, GCPS announced that Lane has been named the 2016 Region I Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents
(VASS). For Lane, who was hired in January 2012 after serving as a superintendent in Middlesex County, the nod serves to highlight not only his own efforts, but also those of the leadership team he works with every day. “We have an incredible team at Goochland County [Public] Schools,” Lane said, describing a working environment in which all employees at every level seem totally focused on creating the best possible learning environment for the students they serve. The goal from day one, Lane said, has been to further the division’s stated goal of “maximizing the potential of every learner.” Lane is no stranger to recognition: He was named in Richmond’s Style Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2013 and was one of 100 superintendents across the nation recognized at the White House in 2014 for extraordinary leadership in education and as a “future ready” leader. While Lane was hesitant to bask in the glow of his most recent honor, preferring to focus the spotlight on his
staff, educational leaders from around the region were happy to give him his due. “I met James Lane on my first day as superintendent in Chesterfield when he was a graduate student and I knew that moment that his future as a leader would be tremendous, said Dr. Marcus Newsome, Chesterfield County Public Schools superintendent. As a group of regional superintendents, we have committed to raising the quality of educational opportunity throughout the region and James epitomizes that. We are very fortunate to have his leadership.’ “Dr. Lane’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and personalized student learning make him a deserving recipient of the Superintendent of the Year Award from Region I,” said Eric Jones, superintendent of Powhatan County Public Schools. “Dr. Lane s leadership on the enhancement of our regional autism consortium as well as the creation of CodeRVA, an innovative regional high school to promote computer science education, will expand educational opportunities for all students in
the Richmond area.” Goochland school board chairman Kevin Hazzard pointed out that Lane’s work thus far has had a far-reaching impact. “He’s moving public education forward in the whole region, really across the Commonwealth, with innovative thinking and policymaking that helps students to maximize their full potential,” Hazzard said. For his part, Lane was eager to thank those with whom he has worked in Region 1. “It is humbling to work among such tremendous lead-
ers as comprise our group of regional superintendents,” Lane said. “It is even more humbling to have been selected for see Lane > 4
r. Lane’s recent recognition is well deserved; without question he’s among the strongest, most effective educational leaders in the state. I’m an optimistic person by nature, but I’ve never been so energized by another professional in my 20-year career. The Goochland school-community is fortunate to have a division superintendent focused on what matters most to families: the success and well being of every single student in our system.” — Dr. Stephen Geyer Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for Goochland County Public Schools

Program will offer advice on using sustainable techniques For those who are tired of the food desert of winter and want to stimulate their mind with thoughts and plans for a bountiful spring and summer vegetable garden, an upcoming workshop will offer a way to learn sustainable tech-
niques for vegetable gardening. Topics include planning a garden, soils and soil amendments, common diseases and pests of all major vegetables, minimal pesticide use and more. A wealth of vegetable gardening information will be provided. A printed manual will also be available for an optional fee to defray printing costs. The Vegetable Gardening program is scheduled for 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday March 19, at the Goochland County library. Lane continued from >3 this honor. I am in awe of the outstanding efforts of our collective school divisions and look forward to our pursuit of unparalleled excellence as we embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.” Prior to coming to Goochland, Lane became the youngest superintendent in the commonwealth at the time when he was promoted from the assistant superintendency in Middlesex County. His career in education began in 2000 when he became a band teacher with Durham Public Schools. He went on to serve as an assistant principal, middle school principal and assistant superintendent, spending time in Durham, North Carolina, Chesterfield and Middlesex counties. Lane earned a Doctor of
Education from the University of Virginia and a second Master’s Degree from North Carolina State University. He earned his first Master’s and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He serves as an adjunct professor at VCU, James Madison University and the University of Richmond. As regional winner, Lane moves forward as a finalist for the Virginia Superintendent of the Year. There are eight regions throughout the Commonwealth designated by the Virginia Department of Education. One superintendent from each region is chosen annually to advance to compete for the VASS Virginia Superintendent of the Year. The state winner then competes for the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Superintendent of the Year.

For those who like the idea of gardening at waist height and avoiding the pesky salad loving critters who usually dine in a traditional garden, here’s a wonderful opportunity. Salad tables allow gardeners to extend the salad growing season and grow leafy greens without straining their backs. It’s portable, inexpensive to build and can even feature wheels. This workshop will offer an alternative method for growing leaf lettuce, arugula, kale, spinach, radish, parsley, cilantro, basil and more using “cut and come again” gardening methods. The workshop is scheduled for March 5, at the Goochland

Special delivery The Goochland Animal Shelter recently had a special delivery when a stray lab that was brought into the shelter gave birth to 11 puppies. Almost all the puppies were adopted in less than a week, and shelter coordinator Julie Lawrence said she was so thankful for the community’s support. She also urged anyone interested in adopting a pet to visit the shelter, as the facility is currently filled to capacity. For Goochland, plenty of good news to go around By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland may have been enveloped by an arctic blast last week, but residents of our fair community didn’t have to look very far to warm their hearts. Thanks to the generosity of young Ashley Marmer, the Goochland Animal Shelter received some much-needed donations of food and toys last Thursday. Ashley, 6, has spent her last two birthdays asking her family and friends to forgo giving her presents and instead bring pet supplies, and she must be a popular young lady indeed: When she and her parents were finished carrying the dozens of boxes and bags into the county’s animal shelter, the haul took up half of the front office. There were quite a few beaming adults on hand that day, all marveling at the maturity and generosity of this tiny blonde wisp of a girl. Ashley, for her part, didn’t seem to notice — she was far more interested in the opportunity to pet some of the shelter’s current residents than she was in accepting any praise for her good deed. Getting the chance to take in this scene served as another reminder of how amazing young people can be. All around Goochland County, children of

all ages are doing amazing things, from helping their neighbors, to raising funds for charitable causes, to sharing their artistic talents with the community. This week, we would like to invite our readers to share their stories of local kids of all ages who are making a difference in our community. Do you know someone we should recognize in our pages? Send your ideas to rryan@goochlandgazette.com or call (804) 339-7956. We may not be able to find every kid who deserves recognition, but we’d certainly like to celebrate as many as we can. *** Speaking of young people, one of our youth’s greatest advocates got a very special nod this week. Goochland School Superintendent Dr. James Lane was named the 2016 Region I Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents. It was a fitting honor for someone who wasted little time making his mark after coming to Goochland in 2012. By all accounts, Lane has already distinguished himself as tremendous leader, a true innovator, and a tireless champion of Goochland students. We here at the Goochland Gazette congratulate him on his selection as Region I Superintendent of the Year, and wish him continued success.

Spreading the love Preschool students from Mt. Gilead Baptist Church visited the Meadows Nursing Home on Feb. 11 for a Valentine’s Day celebration. During the visit, the children sang songs to the residents, brought Valentine gifts, and worked on a Valentine craft. The residents and preschoolers enjoyed working together to decorate hearts that said “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”
Finding history in your own backyard By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
You are never too old to learn something new. For years and years, I’ve passed by Chimborazo Park in Richmond and never realized the unique history of the acres of hilltop property that offers breathtaking views of the city. Sure, I realized the ground was hallowed and served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War. Despite overwhelming challenges, Chimborazo treated thousands of soldiers during the war, and most of them who entered the sprawling hospital campus eventually healed and returned home or back to battle. It’s a medical history that is displayed in the National Park Service’s headquarters at the site that houses an extensive medical museum of the activity at Chimborazo.
And, for years, that was the story at Chimborazo. Many enjoyed the beautiful surroundings of the park without studying its medical past, and others avoided the history altogether. And, that was the only history known for decades when it came to Chimborazo. NPS historian Mike Gorman said historians simply didn’t know what happened on the site from the time it ceased being a hospital and when it became a Richmond park in 1886. Researchers found evidence in the most unlikely of places. Records of the Freedmen’s Bureau began showing up on the Internet, and the name Chimborazo was repeatedly listed as a residence for freed AfricanAmerican slaves. After volumes of research, the period following the war is still an incomplete history, but the evolu-
tion of technology and the Internet allows historians to constantly pursue the unknown. While there are monuments and memorials to many heroes around the city, there’s not one mention of the evolving black community at Chimborazo, except a few misleading articles in the newspaper from the time. It seems racial relations between residents of Chimborazo and Rockett’s Landing located just below the hill were not cordial and the newspaper reported several incidents described as riots that, in reality, were fights between residents and intruders. In 1880, the city ordered the community torn down, and the lumber from the dozens of buildings was sold to the highest bidder and sold off. see Ridolphi > page 7

American Legion members will also be interviewing students, both male and female, for participation in the Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Program hosted by the Virginia State Police and supported by the American
It’s a piece of Richmond history that has been reclaimed thanks to the dogged efforts of Gorman and his colleagues. It’s no surprise that there’s still much to learn about the years after the war when the industry of slavery ended, and thousands of slaves found that being free
didn’t solve everything in a destroyed South. LearningaboutChimborazo affirmed something I’ve always believed: The more you look, the more you learn. When it comes to Richmond and its history, it’s also good to know there are still mysteries out there, places not visited
and stories not told. It’s never too late to discover them. I’ll view Chimborazo differently now as I recognize it’s another important part of African-American history in the city — a history that will one day be complete and celebrated.

To Lars, there’s no question that community outreach is part of their mission as business owners. “It’s something we feel strongly about and enjoy doing,” he said. “This honor is icing on the cake.”

County CASA group will host training class Contributed report
The only program of its kind, the national Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association is a network of nearly 1,000 state- and community-based programs that recruit, train, and support citizenvolunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused or neglected children in courtrooms and communities. Goochland CASA is one
of those programs and in March they are planning to start a class for prospective advocates. A Court Appointed Special Advocate participates in a 30-hour training program. Once appointed to the case by the judge, our trained CASAs make a difference by investigating the details, building a relationship with the child, and fight-
ing for what is in his or her best interest. Local judges value the court reports that CASAs submit because they helps them make an informed decision about the special needs and placements of these children. Goochland CASA is a nonprofit organization that has been in Goochland for 11 years. The group also is sponsoring a con-
cert on March 19 at Goochland High School. This is the group’s major annual fundraising event. Michelle Nixon & Drive will bring their enthusiasm and talent to support the organization’s mission. For more information about the concert or to register for the class, call Goochland CASA executive director Ann Casey at (804) 556-5876.

With much of the snow from last month’s massive winter storm now gone, members of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors heard reports on Feb. 2 about how both the Virginia Department of Transportation and local emergency crews dealt with the historic weather event. According to VDOT representative Marshall Winn, the storm that blew in on Friday, Jan. 22, brought more snow than he had ever seen fall in the county at one time. Describing drifts that reached four to five feet in some areas, Winn said his department had as many as 10 of their own vehicles stuck during the weekend. As the snow totals climbed past 18 inches, he said some drivers were forced to wait until the next day before they could be pulled out. The news wasn’t all bad: Early warnings about the coming snow allowed VDOT crews to gear up at least a week ahead of time, Winn said. Prior to the storm and during the clean-up effort, the department used over 1,000 tons of salt and 1,500 tons of abrasives on local roads. Winn told the board that his department is still working to resolve several complaints about damage to road shoulders, though damage to local mailboxes was unexpectedly low. Speaking on behalf of Goochland Fire and Rescue, Deputy Chief of Emergency Medical Services Eddie Ferguson reported that call volumes during the storm had stayed reasonably consistent and that deployment of the department’s Winter Operational Plan had been successful. Despite several ambulances getting stuck in the snow, Ferguson said crews were able to adjust and respond quickly to all requests for service.

Goochland basketball seasons end By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland basketball coach Preston Gordon said that his team was confident heading into the matchup with Prince Edward in the Quad Rivers Conference 34 opening round. It was the third time the Bulldogs and Eagles had squared off this season, with both previous games going in favor of Prince Edward by a combined score of just 11 points. “We felt like we had to shoot the ball well there and play solid defense and not let those guys
get out in transition and limit second chance opportunities,” Gordon said. While Gordon said that his team was able to accomplish many of those goals, the Bulldogs fell to the Eagles for the third time this season, ending the 2015-16 campaign in a 58-43 final. The Bulldogs were able to keep pace with the Eagles for the first half, but when Marty Blount checked in for Prince Edward, he went on a personal nine point run in the third quarter. That deficit was one that Goochland would not bounce
back from. “It was crazy how his shots kept falling,” Gordon said. “We thought we were contesting his shots, but just not enough. That was a backbreaker for us. We couldn’t get a stop in that quarter. They outscored us 13-7 in that quarter. We just couldn’t get it going in the third quarter.” The loss ended Goochland’s run at a 6-10 record this season. Gordon said that while his team’s season was cut short, he will remember the quality of the kids that were on his roster this season. Senior captain BJ Snead
and junior Jack Twombly were two of those quality kids that Gordon had and they were the offensive leaders this season. Snead averaged 25 points per game and Twombly averaged 12.6 points and 10.3 rebounds. The Bulldogs also got large contributions, and more importantly significant playing experience, from players such as Josh Chandler and Deion Harwood. “Having some of those guys get minutes and current juniors to build confidence and build on their skills to get better will be key for us for the offseason,” Gordon said.
Next season, Twombly, Chandler and Harwood will be three returning starters, giving Goochland a good jumping off point for the 2016-17 campaign. While this season might be over, Gordon said that this group of Bulldogs was one of the best groups he’s coached in a long time. “The character, the way they were around each other, was wonderful,” he said. “As a coach who has a roller coaster season, that’s not the way you want your season to go with so many losses. Coaching a losing game
and having a season like this is never easy, but the players make it a little easier. If you have to deal with attitudes or issues off the floor, that always becomes stressful. This group of guys, there weren’t any issues. They are very well mannered and brought up the right way. I give credit to their parents as well. They’ve raised some great young men.” The Goochland girls team also ended what was a difficult season in the opening round of the Quad Rivers Conference playoff. The Bulldogs fell to Greenville County 77-23.

Basketball a family event for Harwood By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Playing varsity high school basketball is a difficult challenge for any athlete and just a few make the final roster. That’s even more difficult when you are a freshman just entering the new world of high school and all of the accompanying adjustments. For Goochland freshman Deion Harwood, it seems like the process came easy. The talented guard just completed his first season as a Bulldog and made a quite an impact along the way. It wasn’t immediately evident when the season began that Harwood was beyond his years in talent and desire. It wasn’t a mystery to him. “Coming into the season I was really looking forward to play on varsity. I knew it was going to be a challenge but I was up for it,” Harwood said. As the season progressed, Harwood’s confidence level increased with each game. His speciality for the Bulldogs is his game from beyond the arc. He credits his teammates and coaches with that transformation of confidence. “Through out the season I could tell I was getting a little
bit more comfortable, my teammates had a little more faith in me, and coach was asking a little more from me,” Harwood said. Coach Preston Gordon watched as Harwood’s game improved, and the young player started to believe in himself. “I saw his confidence level go up with each game,” Gordon said. Harwood, 15, took advice well, and his game propelled in to a starting role. “Sometimes it was hard but I knew I had to push myself so I could achieve the goal every good basketball player has, and that’s to get better everyday.” By his own admission, his game is still evolving, but Harwood is finding some sweet spots. “I think the best part of my game is my shooting. Its something I spend a lot of time focusing on during practice. My passing is another one of my strengths. Making a perfect pass to someone for an easy lay-up or making a nice kick out pass to the open man for three really fuels my confidence going through a game,” Harwood said. “I think every part of my game can use some working on.” And there is one specific part of his game that, in his estimation, needs work. “During the off season I
plan on working primarily on handling the ball and ball control. This season I have had a few more turnovers than I should have and I know that I can’t do that next season.” Harwood has an easygoing personality that serves him well both on and off the court. “I would say I’m pretty chill person,” he said. “I don’t really get to worked up about stuff and I try to have a positive mind. At school I try to keep myself out of trouble and not be in the wrong crowd.” He does have one obsession —sneakers. “I’m a pretty big sneaker head so when ever I have some down time or about to go to bed I’m look at shoe, seeing when the next pair release, or just learned some facts about some shoes.” Harwood’s freshman season became a family affair when his mother, Maria Harwood, began singing the national anthem at GHS home basketball games. “My mom by far is my biggest fan,” Harwood said. “This season she came to almost game, home and away. Her being there really shows how much she supports me and wants me to do good.” And hearing her performing her perfect rendition of the

anthem inspires her son. “Her singing the National Anthem, especially on senior night, really make me wanna play good because I know it will
make her happy.” It’s early in Harwood’s career and he hasn’t settled on career choices or college choices… but basketball will play a role in
those plans. “Right now I am really excited about my future. My goal is to go to college after high school to hopefully play basketball.”
Swimming, wrestling teams compete in regionals Staff reports

Munoz of East Rockingham with a chance to go to the championship bout, but he was pinned in 47 seconds. Herrara dropped to the consolation bracket, and was pinned by Gabe Farmer of Madison County in 2:53. Herrara then went to the

degree from Seton Hall University and an MBA from St. John’s University to become an early leadership pioneer in information technology. John’s rock and lounge band “The Castaways” took Staten Island by storm in the 1970s. John simultaneously orchestrated a career that saw him ultimately become the CIO of Fortune 1000 healthcare companies, US Healthcare, Aetna and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. All of that paled in comparison to his ability to craft a near-perfect bagel egg sandwich and tell a killer story. He was a man of principles and had an impossible work ethic. He was generous to a fault and made a difference
