AIMING FOR THE Concerns remain over proposed subdivision
Class offers window into public safety career path
Nearby residents insist infrastructure can’t support large increase in population

Residents opposed to a proposed subdivision near Rockville Road will likely have to wait until April to see what action the Goochland County Board of Supervisors will take on the matter, but many residents continue to make sure local officials know their views on the matter. A rezoning request submitted last year by Wilton Acquisitions, LLC — one that would clear the way for up to 193 single-family homes on 97.73 acres — drew almost immediate protests from residents concerned about issues ranging from increased traffic on already dangerous roads to the potential negative impact on property values. To a number of those living nearby, including Manakin Road resident John Bachman, adding new homes without addressing how the county would be able to serve them simply doesn’t make sense. According to an email sent by Bachman on Feb. 8 to all five county supervisors, the issue of emergency service response is particularly important to him. One night in 2012, Bachman wrote,
Thanks to a popular new class offered this year at Goochland High School, students can learn first-hand what it means to work in the field of public safety. f all the things law enforcement officers in a rural community must deal with on a daily basis, some are certainly less serious than others. Take cows, for example. Even if rounding up stray livestock doesn’t sound like anyone’s idea of fun, county deputies are often called in for bovine break-outs. “It does happen frequently,” admitted Goochland County Sheriff Jim Agnew, and can occasionally pose a danger to motorists. Agnew said it isn’t always the fault of the property owner — sometimes someone else leaves a gate open or a fence simply falls down — but residents
can be penalized under the county code. For his part, Agnew shared that he years ago found a somewhat novel method for corralling wayward cows. One night while on patrol early in his career, he tried mooing into the public address system of his car. You might guess what happened next. “They followed me right into the pasture,” Agnew laughed. “That’s the God’s honest truth.”

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County students, said Bruce Watson, Goochland County Public Schools’ director of Career and Technical Education While two separate courses focused on firefighting and emergency medicine had struggled with enrollment in past years, the new combined course has the maximum number of 24 students attending. Not only has the course been opening students’ eyes to three potential career tracks, said Watson, but it also has provided critical public safety training that can be used
immediately. Now, thanks to training provided to the teacher and students during the class, “there are 25 more people in our community who are certified in CPR,” said Watson. “That’s huge.” Watson stressed that another hope for the class was that it would help build interest in public service and giving back, not just as a career but as a way of life. “We really wanted to make that a big part of the class,” Watson said.

To Goochland Fire and EMS Chief Bill MacKay, the new course is the next step in what has traditionally been a strong relationship between the schools and the local fire departments. The firefighter program at the school has served as a recruiting tool for the department in recent years, MacKay said, and several current volunteers and career firefighters have come through the program. Recently, firefighters were given the use of an unoccupied, soon-to-be-demolished building near Randolph Elementary School for training, and students got to take in the excitement of mock drills complete with theatrical smoke and “victim” mannequins being rescued from the structure. “They really loved it,” said MacKay of the students, “and they’re excited because they can’t wait to be the one’s doing that.”

CSI class shows science behind crime solving By Roslyn Ryan Editor
From the tales of Sherlock Holmes to Nancy Drew, detective stories have been a favorite of children for as long as they’ve been written. And, next month, thanks to a class offered through Goochland Parks and Recreation’s Rec Zone afterschool program, local children will have a chance to learn the modern-day science today’s crime fighters use every day. CSI, a four-week program beginning March 1 for children ages 8 through 12, will offer participants lessons in finger-
printing, handwriting analysis and several other crime scene investigation techniques. The program will include a visit from members of the Virginia Forensic Institute, as well as from members of Goochland’s law enforcement community. To Parks and Rec Program coordinator Jessica Kronberg, who has helped coordinate the program for the past several years as one of the department’s summer camp offerings, the chance to offer it as an afterschool program is truly special. “It’s a lot of fun for the kids, and it’s always one of the first ones to fill up,” said Kronberg. As part of the program, children are first challenged to solve a staged “crime” — always one that is age-appropriate, Kronberg insisted — using some of the strategies they’ve
learned up to that point. At the end of the program, students are tasked with forming teams and creating their own mysteries for their classmates to solve. Essentially, Kronberg said, “the techniques the kids are learning about in class are the same techniques the professionals are using out in the real world. It’s amazing to see how quickly they catch on, and how they use that information.” The CSI program is just one of many options offered this year by Goochland County Parks and Rec. For more information on the class, or to register for it any other program, visit the department’s website at http:// www.goochlandva.us/236/ Parks-Recreation or call (804) 556-5854.

Thinking ‘small’ By Roslyn Ryan Editor
“Behind every small business, there’s a story worth knowing. All the corner shops in our towns and cities, the restaurants, cleaners, gyms, hair salons, hardware stores – these didn’t come out of nowhere.” – Paul Ryan, Speaker, United States House of Representatives
F
or a simple, two-word term,“small business” can encompass quite a range. Just think about it: Pushed into that category — just in the United States alone — are 28,000,000 companies, all of which meet U.S government’s definition of small business (fewer than 500 employees). The founders of these businesses include Ivy League MBAs as well as folks who did not even graduate from high school, those who sit at a computer designing complicated software, and those who grind through full days of tough, physical labor. From the largest of these businesses to the single-man operations, they do more to keep the economy rolling than most of us even imagine. According to information provided by Forbes, over 50 percent of the working population — or around 120 million people — work in a small business. As we all know, small business owners are not superheroes, and

yet many of them manage to pull off superhuman feats every single day. They wear multiple hats, juggle ridiculously demanding schedules, and do whatever it takes to make their businesses competitive. They troubleshoot, rally troops, and, even when things don’t work out quite right, learn from their mistakes and keep moving forward. Right here in Goochland, we have scores of small business owners living and working among us. Some of them you likely see every day as you drive past the hair salons, accounting offices and auto repair shops. Others ply their trades from home, ensconced in home offices and breakfast nooks, typing away on laptops and making calls late into the night. Even as they offer a boost to our local economy —and provide valuable goods and services — they also offer us a wonderful example of hard work, inventiveness and determination. In the coming weeks, the Goochland Gazette will be profiling several courageous entrepreneurs and small business owners from around the county, sharing their stories as well as the lessons they’ve learned along the way. We hope you’ll enjoy meeting them in our pages, and also that you will continue to support their efforts. They may never be considered “big” by definition, but their value

Top Chef continued from >1 Fast forward just a day later, and Wright found herself frantically pulling together a portfolio of her work and prepping for what promised to be a nerve-wracking audition interview across the country, all while continuing to run her ever-expanding Goochlandbased catering operation The Local Agrarian. A vivacious entrepreneur who “likes to do a little bit of everything,” Wright said she didn’t mind the disruption to her already hectic schedule. The opportunity to audition for Top Chef, however, also came during what has undeniably been a difficult period in her life. Less than a year ago Wright lost her mother — a woman she describes as her “rock”— without warning. The ensuing months were incredibly painful, she said, but she found a measure of relief and healing by throwing herself into her work. Along with raising her two teenage sons, Wright began a gourmet meal-delivery service, taught culinary classes, and decided to expand her business by purchasing a fully-loaded food truck, essentially a mobile kitchen that would allow her to bring her skills to a wider
audience. “This was what I’ve always wanted to do, and I knew that my mom would have wanted me to, so I just went for it,” Wright explained. A well-known and respected baker and chef, Wright describes herself as someone who tries to avoid regret. So when the Top Chef audition opportunity arose, she knew she couldn’t let fear or doubt stand in her way. “It’s life,” Wright said happily last week, just after returning from her whirlwind trip to the west coast. “You take a break, you have an adventure and you move on.” She won’t know for a while whether she’s been chosen to appear on the show, and, if she does make the cut, she’ll be contractually obligated to remain mum until the next season is over. She did admit she’ll be “scared to death” if she is chosen to compete, but insisted that she wouldn’t let it stop her. Asked what her beloved mother would think about all of this, Wright said she knows she would be thrilled. The two of them shared a birthday, Wright said, and her mother loved adventure too. “She would just say ‘That’s my girl.’”
Michele Wright’s Virginia Apple Pie Cake Wright offered up this recipe for “when you need a dessert, [but] have little time and/or little skill. It’s delicious, never fails, and always pleases.” 1/4 c. butter 1 c. sugar 2 eggs 1 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 3 tbsp. orange juice 1 tsp. vanilla 2 1/2 c. peeled, finely chopped apples 1/2 c. raisins
Cream butter; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, one at a time; mix well. Combine next 5 ingredients. Add to creamed mixture alternately with orange juice, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir in vanilla. Fold in apples and raisins. Pour batter into greased and floured 9” pie plate. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted comes out clean.

‘Cornwallis’ to visit DAR group Contributed report
Grace Episcopal Church will be the site of a British invasion on March 5, as General Charles Earl Cornwallis (aka Dr. Bruce Venter) makes history come to life. Gen. Cornwallis, also known as “The Old Fox Hunter,” will tell of his exploits as a subordinate under Generals William Howe and Sir Henry Clinton. The presentation is entitled “Audacity without a Strategy.” Cornwallis was an excellent battlefield tactician and fearless leader. But, he ran into problems when dealing with his commander-in-chief, General Clinton. Cornwallis relates his part in Great Britain’s southern campaign to subjugate the colonies. The headstrong Cornwallis, however, thought he knew what was best for British forces in
America. His strategy eventually landed him in a siege he could not win at Yorktown. The Chancellor Wythe Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is the sponsor of the free presentation and the public is invited to attend. The Chapter will hold its regular meeting at 10:20 a.m. and cordially invites anyone who is interested in membership or would like to know more about the organization to join us at that time. Everyone is invited for refreshments at 11:30 a.m., with General Cornwallis crashing the party shortly thereafter. DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share a common bond of having an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the
United States of America. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join. Daughters are vibrant, active women who are passionate about community service, preserving history, educating children, and honoring and supporting those who serve our nation. Grace Episcopal Church, located at 2955 River Road West, in Goochland, was founded in 1876 and the building was consecrated in 1882. Throughout its 140-year history, Grace Church has been an active member of the Goochland Community ministering to the needs of the community, supporting county programs and providing space for community programs and activities.

In the final match, Benedictine’s Robert DuPont (right) defeated Trevor Hayes of Paul VI in the 145-pound class during the VISAA State Wrestling Tournament held Feb. 20 at Deep Run High School.
Benedictine cruises to VISAA title By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch
When Brady Biller emerged the victor of the 126-pound state championship bout, it was the end of a long journey. One that began five years ago, when his mother passed away.
Biller was one of three Benedictine Cadets who won Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state titles Saturday at Deep Run. The Cadets coasted to their third consecutive state title, finishing with 347 points. St. Christopher’s finished second with 281.
“I knew we were going to get it this year,” said Benedictine junior Josh Wyland, who won the 138-pound final. Growing up, Biller was a soccer player, like his mother before him. But when she died, playing soccer just wasn’t the same. “It didn’t seem right anymore,” Biller said.
So he took up wrestling. It was a sport his mother had never let him play. And at first, he wasn’t very good, and wrestling wasn’t that much fun. But after he got his first win, the sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. And he kept working at it and getting better.
“That kid is the epitome of hard work,” said Benedictine coach Ryan Hall. As a junior, he injured his knee in practice. He wrestled through the remainder of the season, finishing runner-up in the state tournament. In the summer, he had surgery, in which doctors removed
the bursae, a fluid sac in his knee. “I have nothing but bone in there,” he said. The joint swells every day and icing his leg is a constant chore. But it wasn’t enough pain to keep him out of contention

Cadets win big, end four-game skid By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Benedictine coach Robert Churchwell III said that his squad “needed a win bad.” On Friday night, that’s exactly what they did. The Cadets ended a fourgame losing streak with a dominating 88-70 win over St. John Paul the Great to end the regular season on a positive note. Aaron Fowlkes led Benedictine with 15 points and was one of four Cadets in dou-
Titles continued from >12 for a state title. On Saturday, he beat Gray Hart of St. Christopher’s 3-1 in the championship match. Even though his mother never let him wrestle, he knows she would be proud of everything he’s accomplished. “I know she’s looking down with big eyes, so happy,” Biller said. “I wish she was here to see it.” Teammate Robert DuPont won a title at 145 pounds. And he did it with his face wrapped up so tightly he couldn’t breathe through his nose. In the first period against Trevor Hayes of Paul VI, DuPont got hit in the nose, and it began to bleed. First, medical attendants stuffed some gauze up his right nostril. But the bleeding wouldn’t subside. So they wrapped green gauze around his entire head. When that failed to contain the blood, the match was stopped again and even larger
ble figures. Justin Henry had 13 points, Anthony Roberson added 12 and Cutch Ellis had 10 points and 15 rebounds. “They played really good defense and had really good transitions,” Churchwell said. “The boys brought it.” The game started off in an unusual way, with Benedictine’s Dominic Franko making one of two free throws from a technical foul assess to St. John Paul the Great before the game had even started. The Wolves were nabbed for dunking during warm-ups. gauze was wrapped around his face. DuPont said it was like wrestling with his head in a box. It was a sensation he had never experienced before. “I’ve never had my face masked,” said DuPont. “But by the third period, everything was clicking.” Saturday was DuPont’s first match in a month. In two separate practice mishaps, he sprained his ankle and partially tore his ACL. He won the title with a brace on his leg. St. Christopher’s senior Joey Prata (125 pounds) won his third consecutive state title. As a freshman, he finished runner-up in the state. Now, Prata is eyeing the national wrestling event next weekend at Lehigh University. He’s won the past two years and is looking for three in a row. Prata, who was one of five St. Chris wrestlers to win an individual title Saturday, will wrestle for Virginia Tech next year.
St. John Paul the Great pulled within one point near the end of the first quarter, but back-to-back 3-point shots from Ellis and Fowlkes started an 8-2 run that put the Wolves in the Cadets’ rearview mirror. Benedictine started the second quarter with a 8-2 run and then a 7-0 run that really gapped the distance between the two teams. Already ahead 40-28 by halftime, Benedictine kept the pedal down and had an offensive explosion in the third quarter. Boosted by a 3-point shot
from Fowlkes to start the second half, the Cadets went on a 11-2 run that really opened up the game and stopped short any hope the Wolves had of regaining ground to mount a comeback. Overall, Benedictine scored 33 points in the third quarter to rocket out in front and stay there for the remainder of the game. “I think perhaps an evolution,” Churchwell said. “Perhaps they are evolving and finally understanding what this team is capable of doing. They were focused.”
It was also raining 3-point shots as Benedictine was 11-of23 from beyond the arc, and the Wolves were 8-of-19. Brandon Edmond led St. John Paul the Great with 29 points, and Tom Gregorits had 12 points. At 11-14 this season, it is not a typical year that the Cadets are accustomed to. The five-time state champions, last in 2013, head into the VISAA tournament on March 1. As of the Feb. 16 VISAA poll, the Cadets were voted ninth out of the Top 10 in Division 1, just

ahead of the Wolves and behind No. 8 Bishop Sullivan. Paul VI is the No. 1 team in the poll. Churchwell said that this win against St. John Paul the Great certainly helps his team get some momentum going into the tournament. “I definitely think it helps us,” he said. “We’ve gotta get back in the lab next week and work. Hopefully we can stay healthy and get ready to play.” Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com. or on Twitter @BillyFellin.
