fter three years at the helm of Goochland County Public Schools, Dr. James Lane is moving on. But as he announced his resignation on Tuesday, after accepting the position of Superintendent for Chesterfield County Public Schools, Lane insisted it was not an easy decision.

“I have loved every minute of my more than three years in Goochland, and will treasure the relationships that I have built with the faculty, staff, students, and community,” said Lane, who was hired in 2012 after serving as an assistant superintendent in Middlesex County. see Lane> 5

Del. Lee Ware, R-65, of Powhatan has been named chairman of the Virginia Wireless Infrastructure Work Group, a panel formed to lead the General Assembly in identifying ways to expand broadband service in rural areas of the Commonwealth. “In Powhatan, Goochland and Fluvanna in my district, the need for high-speed Internet and broadband services has become in many instances critical,” Ware Ware said. “The same is true in many other rural counties of the Commonwealth, so our group will meet with industry and governmental officials and all other stakeholders to propose the best possible solution for a cooperative approach between private business and our state government.” Also serving on the panel from the see Internet > 2

Beavers and bats and barred owls

OH,MY

When it comes to catching critters, owner of Goochland-based removal company has seen it all By Roslyn Ryan Editor

H

ere’s a conundrum for you: What’s the best way to get a beaver out of a swimming pool? The answer, according to Wanda Hope, is “very carefully.” Of course, most of us won’t ever have to face this problem, but corralling all manner of creatures fierce and furry is all in day’s work for Hope, the founder, owner and Critter-Catcher-in-Chief behind the Goochland-based Virginia Professional Wildlife Removal Services. The beaver Hope was forced to contend with was eventually trapped and removed from the property, making him one of thousands of unwanted guests Hope has been asked to usher out of people’s homes since starting her company in 2009. Hope is the one you call when you find a snake under your sink or a family of bats making a home in your attic. In addition to both of these, she regularly contends with birds, bobcats, chipmunks, coyotes, deer, Canadian geese, flying squirrels, grey squirrels, foxes, ground-

hogs (woodchucks), moles, muskrats, opossums, otters, raccoons, skunks and voles. If you think it sounds dangerous, it is. Consider the moment, for example, when it becomes clear that the sounds heard in the attic of a family’s suburban home are more than likely being made by a raccoon. Forget the cute creatures you’ve seen in cartoons: Racoons, Hope said, can be vicious. Then there are the dozens of other things that can claw, bite, sting or otherwise maim — not to mention the traps Hope and her team of six use, many of which require special care to set. But, despite the obvious dangers inherent in her profession — one in which up-to-date rabies shots are a prerequisite for employment — Hope insists she’s never been seriously injured. In fact, to date, she’s never even been sprayed by a skunk, a feat she credits to a trick she learned early on. “The key is to talk to them softly, and keep their attention,” Hope said. “I don’t care if I have to sing to it — if it doesn’t turn around, it won’t spray you.” When she isn’t singing to skunks or wrangling raccoons, Hope said she spends her time working to educate people on local wildlife. Phone calls come in almost constantly, many concerning problems or issues that, well, aren’t really either. “Someone will call and say ‘I saw a

fox today,’ or something of that nature,” Hope said, but she often assures people that, unless the animal is posing a threat, the situation really doesn’t require intervention. “Just because its in its own habitat, there isn’t necessarily a problem,” Hope said. In fact, for a person that spends much of her time removing animals considered a “nuisance” by homeowners, Hope takes the animals’ side more often than one might expect. “A lot of people think we don’t like animals … that couldn’t be further from the truth,” Hope says. The problem, as she sees it, is that as populations expand and grow farther away from urban areas, the natural areas once largely left to the animal kingdom get smaller and smaller. “The more we expand, the more we see this problem,” Hope said. “The more we build, the less they have.” Hope said she has always had a special fondness for nature, one that serves her well in her current role. Her goal, as she sees it, is to keep wildlife in the wild and help mitigate problems when it doesn’t work out that way. “I think that if I can be the in-between person, between the building and helping the animals survive, that’s where I need to be,” she said. “That’s my calling.”

Students enjoy trip through county’s history Goochland County first graders recently rotated around the county learning about life in the past in Goochland. Each school visited one of the three locations separately throughout the day, stopping at Second Union Rosenwald School, Tuckahoe Plantation and the Goochland County Administration Building. At Second Union Rosenwald School, above, the students listened to alumni share their school experiences, read stories, and played dodgeball and hula-hooped with an alumni from the school. During the Tuckahoe Plantation visit, the students were given a tour of the historic home, walked through the gardens where they tasted mint and mustard plants, and strolled down “Plantation Road.” At the Goochland County Administration Building, students were given an opportunity to listen to artist Patti Rosner present her paintings of the Villages of Goochland. The students were able to see and hear what their community looked like in the past. This was a wonderful day of learning about the community and showing the Goochland students the “good old days.”

time in which black students were not guaranteed the right to an education. Jay with the help of his friend Jewels and his father, the principal, recognized that anger and violence were not the way to resolve issues. He eventually learned the importance of the Rosenwald School and the dedication of school founders Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald to make a difference. On Sunday, Feb. 28, the studentsperformed “Recognizing Rosenwald” for the congregation of Second Union Baptist Church during their “Back in the Day” Black History eve-

Goochland Middle honored as a Virginia ‘School to Watch’ The Goochland County School Board took a moment during its monthly meeting on March 8 to congratulate Goochland Middle School (GMS) for being named to the “Schools to Watch” program by the Virginia Middle

Schools Association and National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. Schools to Watch is a nationally recognized, stateoperated school evaluation program that focuses on students in grades 5 through 8. In achieving this designation, GMS is recognized for academic excellence, social equitability, and responsiveness to the developmental needs of middle school students. “This has been an exciting journey for us,” said GMS principal Jennifer Rucker, noting that achieving the Schools to Watch designation

had been high on her priority list since taking the top spot at the school two years ago. “We wanted this, we worked hard for this, and we got it. We didn’t settle for good, we wanted to go for excellent.” Virginia is one of 19 states across the nation to participate in the Schools to Watch program. Goochland Middle school is one of 11 middle schools in Virginia out of 350 to be named a 2016 School to Watch, joining 33 existing STW schools in the Commonwealth. Schools may apply for redesignation every three years.

Dr. Lane will be missed, but we certainly wish him all the best. Thanks to his foundational work, we are well-positioned for the future and for continuing toward our goal of becoming the top performing school division in the state.” Lane has earned numerous accolades during his time in Goochland, including being named the regional Superintendent of the Year last month. “Dr. Lane has worked diligently with the board to build an award-winning school division that exemplifies innovation in education,” School Board vice-chair Beth Hardy said. “We will immediately begin our search for a leader who shares our focus on innovation to maximize the potential of every learner.” The move to Chesterfield

will offer a new opportunity for growth, Lane said, but he added that this doesn’t make it any easier to leave Goochland. “We have worked together on so many projects over the past three years to build Goochland County Public Schools as a model school division in the region and I am honored to have worked with so many amazing professionals and focused students,” Lane said. “However, the decision to accept the position in Chesterfield offers many new opportunities for my personal and professional growth. I am excited to start a new chapter in my career, but I will always look back on my time in Goochland fondly and will miss my colleagues, the students, and the community greatly. It goes without saying that many of the successes we have seen in Goochland are also in large part due to the leadership of the School Board. Creating a buzz about books By Roslyn Ryan Editor

L

ast week, I had the pleasure of visiting Randolph Elementary School to see Gov. Terry McAuliffe reading to several of the elementary school classes. It was a wonderful visit, complete with excited kids and teachers, and a solid performance from McAuliffe in the role of Dr. Seuss (the book the Governor read, “The Cat in the Hat,” appeared to be a hit with all in attendance). McAuliffe’s visit, of course, served to highlight the importance of reading, a skill that is as important for today’s children as it has ever been. From developing vital language and social skills to enriching young lives and honing creativity, reading has been shown again and again to be a critical building block in children’s development. In today’s fast-paced, gogo-go world, finding time to read with your children can certainly be tough. But in terms of preparing them for the future, instilling a passion for reading may be the best gift you ever give them. *** A few personal observations from last week’s Super Tuesday

primaries: Marco Rubio was the right man at the right place at the wrong time — and by the wrong time I mean the year 2016, when running for political office suddenly took on all the trappings of bad reality television, replete with terrible dialogue, implausible situations, and people getting punched in the face. The next time I am faced with the task of convincing someone I am the best person for any leadership role, I am simply going to repeat the same words over and over, ad nauseam: “Trust me, it’s going to be great. You are not going to believe how great it is going to be. Really, just great.” Because, apparently, this works. We need to pace ourselves. Seriously — it’s March. What on Earth are the pundits going to do once the General Election gets underway? By that point, just to make it interesting, they are going to have to broadcast from inside a tank of live sharks while trained circus bears predict who will win the swing states. Bernie Sanders has the bearing of a man whose shoes are just a little too tight. Trump may end up being the best used car salesman ever to almost become President of the United States.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

www.goochlandgazette.com

Letters to the Editor Letter-writer may want to reconsider suggested plan to deal with birds Dear Editor, I believe that Mr. Bachman’s letter in your March 17, 2016 edition warrants a response. Mr. Bachman must be unfamiliar with the prescribed duties and job description of Goochland’s Animal Control Officers which do not include shooing hungry raptors away from prospective meals. I believe that our Animal Control Officers are generally considered to do an outstanding job under difficult circumstance, on a modest budget by individuals that require their services. It is also clear that Mr. Bachman is unfamiliar with the propensity of carnivores to dine on lesser members of the food chain. Since raptors are very near the top of the food chain a duck looks like a pleasant change in a diet heavily composed of rodents…and rightly so. But, what is most obvious is that Mr. Bachman does not comprehend the severity of Federal law as regards raptors. The killing or maiming of raptors is pun-

ishable by thousands of dollars in fines per incident, confiscation of firearms and other devices involved in the crime, and potentially a significant prison sentence, depending on the circumstances surrounding the commission of the crime. Mr. Bachman’s “sheep herder’s solution” is an invitation to the most severe of the Federal penalties. Several years ago an exceptionally well-connected Albemarle County landowner allegedly tried the “sheep herder’s solution,” only to be pounded to flinders by the Feds…and rightly so.

wondered why he lives in a county with which he seems so dismayed. Mr. Bachman’s letter in the March 17 Gazette entitled “Local animal control must get a handle on destructive wildlife” inspired me to comment instead of my usual chuckle at his ramblings. Mr. Bachman states that he is upset by eagles and hawks (among other wildlife) injuring or killing ducks and geese in his pond. He see Letters > 7

Magical memories of Spring Breaks past By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Watching news reports of current students enjoying Spring Break at some of the most luxurious places on earth has awakened me to the realization that the annual rite of passage has changed since I wiggled my toes in the Florida sand. What remains the same is the internal urge that infiltrates youths across the globe as the first signs of spring appear, and intoxicate. Packing up and heading South has always been a favored avenue of relief for kids ready to make their

first adult adventure. In 1967, I embarked on my first Spring Break adventure. Like many of the best journeys in life, the opportunity was spur of the moment, but, late on the final day of classes before the weeklong break, I found myself behind the wheel of a 1967 Volkswagen headed down U.S. 301. A friend and I decided at the last minute to meet my girlfriend at her grandmother’s house in Ocala, Florida. She took the train from Richmond, and we raced it down the coast, arriving in time to meet her early the next morning at the

old station in Ocala. Once we arrived at her grandmother’s house, a nice little home in a typical Florida neighborhood with cypress and palm trees lining the street, Spanish moss waving in the pleasant breeze, we were faced with an uncomfortable reality. So, it was with some shock that I listened to the news that we would be staying at the other grandmother’s house in downtown Ocala. When we arrived at the huge old house, I must admit Spring Break was not looking as good as I had see Spring Break > page 7

Backpacks of Love founder set to speak at Women in Business lunch By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The founder of a program aimed at helping to feed children in need in Central Virginia will be the guest speaker at the Goochland Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Women in Business luncheon on Tuesday, March 29. Powhatan resident Bobby Fulcher, who founded Backpacks of Love (BPOL) in 2011, will share what motivated him to start the program and discuss how it has grown over the years. According to Fulcher, the

idea came for Backpacks of Love came to him while he was attending a Rotary Club convention. Having experienced the pain of hunger as a child, Fulcher set out to create a nonprofit organization that would help provide food for children whose only guaranteed meals were provided by their schools. Those same children, Fulcher realized, were in need of food during the weekends, holidays and summers as well. In October 2011, BPOL began delivering weekly backpacks filled with six meals to students at Pocahontas Elementary School in Powhatan.

Since then, the group has delivered 19,000 backpacks — or 114,000 meals — to Powhatan students. A program launched in Cumberland County Public Schools in 2014 has provided over 4,000 packs, equaled to about 24,000 meals. The Women in Business luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sunset Grill, located in Manakin-Sabot at 1601 Hockett Rd. Attendees who would like to help support Backpacks of Love are asked to bring a jar of peanut butter (16 ounces or smaller) to the meeting.

Spring Break

cuits baked perfectly, and huge cuts of meat simmered in the oven. It was all in preparation for the evening meal, where every man wasted nary a second once the bell rung. Women came and went with empty bowls, returning them filled with fresh vegetables, prepared the way only a Southerner could appreciate. The conversations were lively, and the appetites were large, but the food was always the hands-down winner, and Mrs. McLean seemed to take pride in seeing a table full of people as diverse as the pattern on the aged rugs below the table, sharing stories after dinner. As the week progressed, Spring Break lived up to all of my expectations. We swam and played at Silver Springs, took day trips to Daytona Beach, and spent star-filled nights at

the neighboring lake. At the end of the evenings, my girlfriend returned to her grandmother’s, and I returned to Mrs. McLean’s. Some nights were rowdier than others, but the tall tales always flowed freely, told from well-seasoned travelers from all corners of America. I remember the small jockeys as they turned in early, ate little, and hit the scales daily to ensure their careers. They left before daylight and returned late in the day. Point is, I learned more about life in that week than any trip I’ve taken since. I can still see the hearty laughs at that table and hear Mrs. McLean making sure everyone had plenty to eat. I often wonder what happened to that old boarding house; and it’s most certainly gone by now . . . but the magic of Spring Break survives.

Four to five guests stayed on each level, but the area felt open due to the huge square steps that intersected the floors. It didn’t take long to realize this was going to be a different experience, and the guest list changed daily. Traveling salesmen, truck drivers, loners, horse jockeys and every other imagination of character were represented in the mix. The magic happened on the ground floor, where a big kitchen sat extended over a small backyard. The smells started early in the day as greens and beans cooked, bis-

Catching up with: Susan Schwartz

G

oochland author Susan Schwartz didn’t set out to be a writer at first. But although the career nurse has spent much of the last several decades in the medical field, writing has become one of her passions. Now working on her first novel — among other projects — Schwartz will be holding a book signing for the horror anthology Nightmares and Echoes, to which she contributed a story. Recently, she took a few minutes to chat with the Goochland Gazette about how she got started, the other writers who inspire her, and how the world of the operating room sometimes makes it into her haunting fiction.

How did you get started as a writer? I started writing in 2004 when I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia. It was a way to journal and keep things in perspective. I also wrote “fanfic” for some of my favorite TV shows. Most of them were off the wall and not really what you would call good fiction. I joine, td the Virginia Writers Club’s Richmond Chapter, and I began to learn what constituted Schwartz great writing. There were so many mentors that really helped me improve my writing. I cannot thank these wise writers enough. I did freelance article writing for two years behind the scenes. I wrote 250 to 1000 articles for websites, businesses, and personal blogs. I learned how to write with certain codewords and phrases. Now that I write more professionally, I have grown to hate seeing the use of the same word over and over in a manuscript. My first real publishing moment came April of 2008. I had written a piece about supporting the Drama Department at Goochland High School. They were doing The Odd Couple, and we were trying to get the

word out about the hard working students and staff. My first book I am still working on at present. It came from a bet with another writer about NANOWRIMO (National Novel Writing Month) every November. She was telling me about it and said it would be a good way to get a head start on my novel. I currently am up to 10,000 words. I hope to have it finished in the next year —or two.

How does being a nurse impact your writing? My nursing career in the Operating Room has really facilitated many of my stories. My first published short story “The Sparkling Floor” came straight from the OR. I do tend to have nursing characters in most of my stories. They always say “Write what you know.” I base most of my stories on real life or things happening in my life. My second story “I Thought You Did” was based on a college initiation gone wrong. My son, Timothy, was in college at the time, and I had been reading about different things going wrong during college rush week to join fraternities. My present book is also based in the medical field as one of the characters is a nurse. I am so proud to be part of such a historical and much respected profession. Having two Masters Degrees in the nursing field, I feel like it is now my time to give back, and I

Preparing kids for kindergarten starts early Contributed report

Thursday, April 14, marks the sixth annual Regional Kindergarten Registration Campaign, coordinated by Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond. This campaign establishes one common registration day for 15 school divisions — that’s 152 elementary schools — in the Richmond region. Children who are 5 years old by September 30 can start kindergarten in the fall, but first they need to be registered. Kindergarten registration for Goochland County is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. To find your school in

your attendance zone, visit www.glnd.k12. va.us. or call (804) 556-5630. There is quite a bit of paperwork needed to register a child for kindergarten, and pulling everything together takes time. Parents and caregivers are still encouraged to attend registration even if they do not have all the documents because exceptions could apply. These are the documents needed for registration: Child’s official, certified birth certificate Two proofs of address School Entrance Health Form (This can be turned in any time before the first day of school)

Photo ID for parent or legal guardian While registration rates have improved, more than 4,000 children were not registered on time in the spring last year — enough to fill about eight elementary schools. “Our goal is to help more parents understand what it means for their child to be ready for kindergarten, and how they can help them at home,” said Rich Schultz, executive director of Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond. In the Richmond region, one in eight children enter kindergarten already see Kindergarten > 9

Soak until plump. Lightly butter or use nonstick spray on two 9x2 cake pans Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, baking powder, cinnamon & nutmeg In a separate bowl, beat eggs until frothy. Gradually add sugar, while continually beating egg mixture. Beat eggs and sugar until mixture is thick and pale yellow in color. Add

oil in a steady stream, while continually beating batter. Beat in vanilla extract. Add flour mixture to batter and beat just until incorporated. Add 1 cup of toasted pecans, drain excess liquid from raisins, remove any pulp and add raisins; gently fold in pecans and raisins. Divide batter evenly between two prepared pans, bake for 25-30 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5-10 minutes, then invert cakes onto parchment paper. Cool cakes completely before icing. Bring mascarpone and cream cheese to room temperature. Whip mascarpone and cream cheese until smooth, add confectioners sugar slowly, whip until combined. Beat in vanilla and heavy whipping cream, whip until desired consistency (may add additional 2 tablespoons of heavy whipping cream). Whip in orange zest (or lemon zest; adds brightness to the icing). Ice the top of the first layer; add second layer; ice the top and sides of cake. Tip for smooth icing: Use a baking spatula and a glass of hot water to rinse and warm spatula to help smooth and even out the icing. Dip baking spatula in hot water, wipe off excess water with a paper towel and glide the spatula across the cake in long even strokes until icing is smooth. Remove any icing on the bakers spatula and repeat until completely smooth and level. Remaining toasted pecans may be pressed into sides of icing for a decorative look or around edges of top and bottom of cake.

Goochland’s Frank Mayosky rounds first as he heads for third with an RBI triple in the sixth inning against Amelia on March 16. Mayosky also scored two runs against Cumberland on March 18.

Duty, Bradshaw power GHS past Amelia 5-0 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland’s baseball opener was delayed by a day due to wet weather last week. That delay didn’t slow down the Bulldogs. Powered by Coleman Duty’s dominant performance on the hill and Tanner Bradshaw’s 2 RBIs, the Bulldogs took down Amelia 5-0 on March 16. “It’s a win,” Goochland coach Wes Farkas said. “We got on them early and we kind of coasted a bit. I felt like we left a lot of guys on base today, but it is the first game. We’re swinging the bats and overall we did pretty well.” Goochland grabbed four runs in the first inning off the Raiders and let Duty do the rest on the mound.

“I was feeling good. First game of the season, I didn’t really know what was going to happen,” Duty said. “Every year you get nervous in the first game, especially at home. I took the first inning to settle myself in and then it just came back to me.” Duty allowed just one hit and walked one batter. “My curveball was getting in there nice and good,” Duty said of his pitching. “Everything was working really well.” “I kept him on a pitch count,” Farkas said. “58 pitches over five innings, we’ll take that any day.” Tanner Bradshaw was 2 for 3 with a double in addition to the two runs he brought around on his bat. Frank Mayosky sealed the deal in the sixth inning with a

stand-up triple that knocked in another run to extend the Bulldogs lead. “Offensively, I saw some sparks,” Farkas said. “Tanner had a shot to the fence. When we got on them early, we strung some singles together and were able to get those guys across the plate. Frank had a great hit for us there at the end to give us some cushion.” Amelia made an attempt at a comeback in the top of the seventh, with a leadoff single to start things off. But, the Bulldogs’ defense was able to stand tall and get the final three outs quickly after that to secure the first win of the season. Bradshaw continued his hot start in a blowout victory over Cumberland, 23-0, on March 17. Bradshaw was 3 for 5 with 4

RBIs and a home run. Scott Carter was 2 for 6 with 2 RBIs and two doubles against the Dukes, while Duty was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Reid Chenault was 2 for 3 with three runs and 2 RBIs. Mayosky added two runs for the Bulldogs. The streak did not continue, however, as the Bulldogs fell on March 18 to St. Christopher’s. Duty was 1 for 2 in the game against the Saints. St. Christopher’s Jeb Bemiss pitched a complete game and scored a run. Goochland faced Randolph-Henry on Tuesday and traveled to Prince Edward on Thursday. Softball off to strong start this season By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

It’s difficult to improve on a championship season where the team amassed a 22-1 record, but that’s the mindset of Bulldog softball coach Amy Henneberger as she enters the 2016 campaign. If early indicators are correct, the team has a legitimate chance of repeating last year’s performance, albeit with younger players and less experienced leadership. “For the first three weeks of the season our biggest weakness was the lack of leadership because we have no seniors,” Henneberger said last week. “The girls have really stepped up and have been talking a lot more.” That communication resulted in two victories last week — a 1-0 squeaker against Amelia and an 11-0 blow out against visiting Cumberland. “Our defense was very good this week. We did a fantastic job with base running and hitting on Thursday (Cumberland). We finished with 13 hits,” the coach said. Although the team has no seniors, it does feature returning starters at key positions. Faith Gerdes returns at second base to anchor the infield with Jordan Laing at shortstop. Caitlyn Robinson returns in the outfield. And the Bulldogs return a battery that is a proven winning combination with Kailyn Spencer on the mound and cousin Casey Spencer behind the plate. That duo produced four

innings of perfect softball against the Dukes. Spenser faced 12 batters and recorded 12 strikeouts. “Kailyn was on fire,” Henneberger said. “She struck out all 12 of the batters that she faced and was 2-3 from the plate with a home run and triple. She had three RBIs and scored two runs.” After striding out the side in the second inning, Spencer led off with a towering home run to left field. “It was the perfect pitch to hit and it was nice getting my first homerun of the season,” Spencer said. She credited her stellar performance on the mound to her cousin and catcher, Casey. “She called a great game and kept me focused,” she said. Sarah Ramsbottom pitched the final inning and recorded two strikeouts while going 3-3 at the plate. Catoria Towles was 23, and Casey Spencer added two hits in the victory over Cumberland. With two victories under their belt, the team is ready for James River District play and some stiff competition. “Randolph-Henry and Central are all always strong teams. In this district any one could win on any given day,” Henneberger said. Even with the strong start, Henneberger knows the road is long and there are no shortcuts. “We were 22-1 last season. We always want to see improvement. We would definitely like to go all of the way.” The team takes on Randolph Henry this week.
