As the Goochland Family YMCA kicked off its Annual Giving Campaign last week, several cycling enthusiasts decided to lend their legs to the effort. Led last Thursday by instructor Michelle Emann, riders Sunni Wright, Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew, Erin Dudley and Dawn Mabry rode stationary bikes set up at the front of the Goochland YMCA for 12 hours. Thanks to their efforts — and that of volunteers and donors — just over $5,300 was raised to support YMCA programs. Above, Goochland YMCA director Andrew Dyson snaps a selfie during the all-day ride.

Real estate tax rate remains unchanged for another year The Goochland Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Monday to maintain the Story on Property Tax will go here county’s real estate tax rate at 53 cents per $100 of assessed value. According to Deputy County Administrator John Wack, the rate remains the lowest in the region, which includes Chesterfield (96 cents), Hanover (81 cents), Powhatan (90 cents), and Louisa (72 cents). Wack told board members that the county’s taxable property grew by 3 percent last year, excluding new construction.

Goochland’s Tucker Park was among the facilities recently honored by Gov. Terry McAuliffe as winners of the 2016 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards. Tucker Park earned an Honorable Mention, which was presented during an awards banquet on April 7 at the Environment Virginia Symposium in Lexington. In addition to recognizing significant environmental contributions in sustainability, environmental projects and land conservation, this year’s awards also recognize exemplary implementation of the Virginia Outdoors Plan. Winners represent McAuliffe businesses and industrial facilities, not-for-profit organizations and government agencies located throughout the Commonwealth. “These winners have made a commitment that all Virginians benefit from,” Gov. McAuliffe said. “I congratulate and thank these organizations for their leadership, innovation and commitment to Virginia’s natural environment.” The 36-acre Tucker Park, which officially opened to the public in 2012, features one of the few public access points see Tucker Park > 5

GHS Players to stage The Music Man Contributed report

The Goochland High School Drama Department will present the musical The Music Man in three shows, April 29, April 30, and May 1 in the Goochland High School auditorium. The beloved classic, with book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson, gave the world some of musical theater’s most memorable songs, including “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” and “Til There Was You.” Neil Burch, who has led the Drama Department at Goochland since 2011, directs The Music Man, and Casey Rogers, a teacher at Goochland High School, is the producer. The technical director for The Music Man is John Ogle, with musical direction by Jay Sykes, who leads the Band program at GHS. Kim Watts, who teaches music at Goochland Elementary School, is the vocal director. Choreography is by Jamie Beatty, who teaches fifth grade at Byrd Elementary.

The Music Man, set in 1912, tells the story of con man Harold Hill, who comes to River City, Iowa to sell the townspeople everything they need for a boys’ marching band: instruments, uniforms and Hill’s unique “think system” for learning music. Once everything is paid for, he’ll take the money and run. Hill’s scheme runs into trouble when he meets Marian Paroo, the town librarian and piano teacher. She sees through his fast-talking charm, leaving Hill with no choice but to romance Marian into forgetting her suspicions. “The Music Man is a classic musical comedy that has been loved by many generations,” said Burch. “We love this show because the characters are vivacious and the plot is warming. One of its underlying themes is the power of positivity. Although he is a con, Harold Hill’s positive approach to selling band instruments brings the community of River City closer together.

Like Harold, the Goochland Drama Department is built on the power of positivity. Thus, I thought this would be a good, light-hearted show to share with the Goochland Drama community.” This staging of The Music Man is one of the Goochland Players’ most ambitious. There are over 60 cast members, ranging from grades five through twelve, and they represent all five of Goochland County’s public schools, making this a true community event. Evening performances of The Music Man are at 7 p.m. April 29 and 30, with a matinee at 2:30 p.m. on May 1. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. While they can be purchased at the door, GHS recommends reserving your tickets by visiting the following page: https://goo.gl/wlGLSb. For questions, contact Neil Burch, nburch@glnd.k12.va.us. For directions to Goochland High School, see http://www. glnd.k12.va.us/index/schools/ directions/

Library’s ‘Read to Rover’ program proves popular with young readers

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A new program at the Cochrane Rockville Branch Library is offering children a fun — and furry — new way to improve their reading skills. Read to Rover, which was held for the first time on March 24, gives beginning readers an opportunity to read to a visiting dog — in this case Louisa resident Kim Darling’s specially trained golden retriever Ceci. Children spend time interacting with the dog, learn a few ground rules, and then take turns reading aloud the book of their choice. The program is open to all young readers, and is intended to both help with reading and increase self-esteem among participants. Part of the appeal, said Rockville Library manager Whitney Berriman, is that the dog provides a non-judgmental “audience” for children who

Watching the two children who came to the first event was more than enough to convince Berriman of the program’s value. “First they played with Ceci, and then settled right in and read,” she said. “It was really neat to watch.” Berriman said the library has only more Read to Rover scheduled after this month — it is set for May 19 — but noted that more dates could be added if the program proves popular with young readers. The next session of Read to Rover will be held ofrom 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. April 28. For more information, call (804) 749-3146 or visit the library at 16600 Pouncey Tract Road..

may be struggling to improve their reading skills. Darling, who works as a veterinary technician at Veterinary Referral and Critical Care in Manakin, said children who might otherwise be hesitant to read aloud seem to forget their fear when they interact with Ceci. “The kids are really just amazing with it,” Darling said. “It’s because there is no pressure from a dog to be a good reader — as long as you rub the dog’s head, she’ll stay there all day and listen.” A number of programs similar to Read to Rover are held in and around Central Virginia, including Paws to Read at the Atlee Branch Library in Mechanicsville. The programs are often wildly popular with children, Darling said, even those who may not be totally comfortable around dogs. Darling remembers one young girl who hid behind her book at first, tentatively reaching out to touch Ceci’s head. The more she read, the more she relaxed, and, by the end of the afternoon, she was no longer afraid. The first time the Read to Rover program was offered in Rockville there were only two participants, said Whitney

Spring Garden Fest has become a key hub for finding high quality perennials, annuals, vegetables, and fruits. In addition, many vendors are expected to offer a variety of garden-related products and services. There will be an on-site holding area for purchases so visitors can continue to enjoy their day unburdened from awkward packages and bags. Hat that launched a thousand sales still doesn’t fit quite right By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Fifty five years after John F. Kennedy delivered what some say was a near-fatal blow to the millinery industry (by going hatless at his presidential swearing-in ceremony), a one Mr. Donald J. Trump seems intent on righting the wrong. I’m talking, here, about The Hat. Sadly, every time Trump dons that now-iconic red hat — emblazoned with the words “Make America Great Again” — he underscores a branding strategy more appropriate for selling cola or car parts than a candidate for president. Have I mentioned before how much I dislike that hat? Maybe not. But I am sure I have mentioned my less than warm feelings toward Trump. Frankly, I find it hard to reconcile Trump’s own riches-toeven-more-riches story with his dour outlook on the country that we both call home. But I digress. If Mr. Trump has any hope of ever appearing worthy of the highest office in the land, he

needs to take the hat off and get down to the business of offering real, tenable solutions to the problems that middle class Americans face. In the end, a hat is just a hat and a bombastic speech — particularly when it offers no substance — is little more than a distraction. Trump, thus far, has campaigned largely on a platform of insulting people, flaunting his wealth, and wearing that hat. The first two, I fear, are part and parcel of the man. The third can actually be removed. And so, to both borrow — and slightly corrupt — a phrase from Ronald Reagan (incidentally, the first candidate to make wide use of the phrase “Make America Great Again”), I would humbly propose the following: There is one sign that Mr. Trump can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. Mr. Trump, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the United States, if you seek liberalization, take off that hat. Mr. Trump, remove the hat. Mr. Trump, tear off that hat!

We are an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that utilizes 100 percent of funds raised to support American Legion programs for Veterans, military families and youth in our community. Recently, the Legion and Auxiliary selected 11 rising high school seniors to attend premier summer programs this June at no cost to them or

Being in the right place at the right time By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

As we pick our lunch and head out the door for another day, there’s no telling what’s waiting for you outside the safe confines of your home. The mystery of each and every day is what makes life interesting … and some-

times terrifying. Running is a family affair for Goochland’s Gordon family, and they make every effort to enjoy events together so a recent10K race was just another event on a busy family schedule. Preston and Bethany Gordon were joined by her father Bill and other

family members for the event. Near the turn of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K, the unexpected happened, and Bill went into cardiac arrest and collapsed. Another morning began in a similar fashion for Matt Howell, a firefighter and EMT who works in Hanover see Ridolphi > page 7

continued from >6 County. He prepared for his first 10K with athletic anticipation, keeping a close eye on his one-hour goal set for the race. It all changed for Howell as he passed mile marker 3 and noticed Hughes on the ground while Bethany performed CPR. Howell’s natural instincts took over and he immediately jumped into action, administered a defibrillation exercise, and directed others on what to do to save Hughes’ life. Thanks to the quick efforts of Howell, the dedicated persistence of a loving daughter, a number of volunteers and the support and love of a family who is dedicated to him, Hughes began breathing and was transported to a local hospital. The Gordons rushed to the hospital and Howell finished the race, just missing his goal by a couple of minutes. After completing the race, Howell’s thoughts immediately turned to Hughes and his family. He wrote on his Facebook page: “I now sit this evening and hope that he is doing better with his family. I knew that the many people that stopped and helped made a difference in this man’s life and I only had a small part in it. So tonight I’ll have a drink and think of him and

know that today I happened to be at the right place at the right time with a bunch of other great people.” Howell told reporters that Hughes was not breathing and did not have a pulse when he arrived. A Richmond police unit provided a defibrillator and Howell used his training to do the rest. Looking back on the incident, Howell credited the quick thinking of Bethany and dozen or so other people who stopped and helped to ensure a positive outcome in what could have been a disastrous event. I spoke with Preston to get an update on his father-in-law. Following open heart surgery, Bill appeared to be doing well. The whole event left the Gordon-Hughes family with a renewed sense of appreciation for the kindness and action of strangers … and Bethany’s quick response. When that Saturday began hours before the race, no one could have imagined what lay ahead, or what life-saving miracles would take place on Monument Avenue. Truth be known, none of us have any guarantees when we walk out of the door each morning, but it’s reassuring to know there are people like Matt Howell out there … just in case we need it.

Joe Pye weed is a perennial wildflower in the aster family. It loves damp soil and can often be found near ponds and streams, but tolerates many soil conditions. In late summer and fall it is easy to spot Joe Pye weed in meadows along the road side because it grows up to six feet tall and the pink flowers are like a butterfly magnet. Fortunately for gardeners, a shorter version is now available in garden centers. ‘Little Joe’ (Eupatorium dubium) is an outstanding dwarf cultivar of the tall native Joe Pye weed. It grows only three to four feet tall and is an excellent choice for butterfly gardening. The pink flowers last for many weeks and are a butterfly favorite. Whether you want a showy specimen in your garden or want to attract butterflies, ‘Little Joe’ is an excellent choice. No one knows the origin of the name of this plant, but many believe it refers to a Native American healer who used it to treat typhoid fever in the early 1800s. Recently scientists have reclassified Joe Pye weed from Photo by Donna Cottingham the genus Eupatorium to Eutrochium. The flowers of the Joe Pye weed are often irresistible to butterflies.

Annual ‘Kolor Me Katie’ race set for May 21 Money raised will help those battling cancer By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When Goochland resident Katie Anderson succumbed to leukemia two years ago at the age of 16, the anguish was nearly unbearable for her mother, Carolyn McCann. But the devastating loss also ignited in McCann a newfound passion for supporting the fight

against cancer and making sure that, someday, no child will suffer the way her daughter did. Part of that effort will be on full display on May 21, when McCann joins hundreds of walkers Anderson and runners taking part in the second annual Kolor Me Katie 5K at the Goochland Family YMCA. Proceeds from the race, during which runners are showered with colored with

corn starch, will go to support Connor’s Heroes, a program at the Medical College of Virginia that provides services to families facing a cancer diagnosis. All ages are welcome to participate in the race. A 400-yard event will be held for children in second grade and younger, and a 1-mile fun run will be offered for children in fifth grade and under. This is certainly not the first time McCann has laced up her running shoes for the cause. She has already run three marathons in honor of her daughter — including one in Greece in

2014 — and also participated in the inaugural Kolor Me Katie race last year. To date, she has raised over $15,000 for cancer research. Asked how she finds the strength to keep moving forward, McCann said it isn’t easy. “I really find that I have to keep myself busy,” she said, “but I also want to do things that would make Katie proud and I don’t want people to forget her.” McCann said she can’t imagine giving up her own personal war against cancer, a foe she points out is the number one

TH

disease killer of children in the United States. “I want that to change,” she said. “I want it to be easier for parents to get experimental drugs and I just want people to be more aware.” Her own experience, she said, has led her to dedicate her life to supporting cancer patients and their families. Said McCann, “I wouldn’t want any parent to have to go through this.” For more information on this year’s Kolor Me Katie 5K, or to sign up, visit www.kolormekatie.com.

Goochland’s shortstop Reid Chenault catches Bluestone’s Keith Patrick attempting to steal in second inning action last week at Goochland. The Bulldogs had 20 total hits against the Barons.

Following a weeklong break for spring vacation, the Bulldogs resumed their assault of the James River District. The team has only one district loss to Randolph Henry, and made short work of Nottoway, Central and Bluestone last week. The team recorded 20 hits against the visiting Barons, a team that usually gives the Bulldogs trouble.

“I thought we played very well on Thursday,” coach Wes Farkas said earlier this week. “Bluestone has been one of toughest match-ups over the past few years, and our guys stepped up to the challenge. Coleman threw the ball well, and Bluestone was able to scatter eight hits throughout the game, scoring two runs.” Everyone on the starting roster got a hit in the win against the Barons. “When you can hit one through nine in the line-up, good things are going to happen,” Farkas said.

Bluestone jumped to a first inning one run advantage, but the Bulldogs stormed back in the second, scoring three runs after Tanner Bradshaw started the rally with a towering hit to centerfield. After three innings, the Bulldogs held a 7-1 advantage and didn’t look back. Coleman Duty had another solid outing on the mound and seems to be finding his mid season stride. “Giving Coleman a large lead allows him to really settle in and take command of the game. Even with

Bluestone’s speed, I felt like we played solid defense with Noah throwing out a runner and making some close plays in the infield,” Farkas said. The team is coming together offensively and defensively as the season progresses, and Farkas likes what he sees. “Our team seems to be coming together and everyone is buying in to their roles on the team to help us win,” he said. After dropping losses to Randolph Henry and St. Christopher’s, the

Bulldogs have come alive. “After a rough start, playing some very talented teams, we have settled into a good rhythm at the plate and on the mound. We are getting quality starts from Bradshaw, Duty and Norman,” Farkas said. “When we have three starters that can go five-plus innings in any given contest, that helps free up the bullpen and gives us a lot of options. We have been capitalizing on runners in scoring position, which see Bulldogs> 13

Bulldogs continued from >12 we weren’t doing at the beginning of the season.” As the season progresses, Farkas said the team’s strength on the mound should only increase. “We’ve had solid outings from our big three, and even our relief pitching has come around with the addition of Frank Mayosky and Andrew Harcum stepping up,” he said. “We hope to get Evan Falconer and Jeb Anderson some time as well. We have seven to eight guys we feel comfortable putting on the mound. We just have to find a way to get them more game experience with limited innings each week.” Farkas said keeping that focus that is producing wins is the biggest challenge facing the team for the remainder of the season. “The coaching staff has tried to instill in our team that we need to play well and the same way regardless of the scoreboard. We have a great tradition in Goochland, and all the players have the expectation of playing in the post season,” he said. The team’s traditional position as a James River District leader also provides teams with extra motivation when they face the Bulldogs. “We have told our guys from the beginning of the season that everyone wants to beat us, and everyone typically brings their ‘A’ game when they play us. No one is going to give us anything just because you are wearing that Goochland jersey. You have got to go out there and prove yourself every night and every pitch.” Goochland faced Benedictine on Monday, Maggie Walker on Tuesday and travel to face Amelia today.

Goochland’s Kailyn Spencer (center) was dominant in the circle for the Bulldogs against Central Lunenburg, striking out seven. But, two missed pitches derailed the strong performance.

Goochland softball drops a rare two straight By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland softball coach Amy Henneberger said she can’t remember the last time that the Bulldogs lost two games in a row. Unfortunately for Goochland, that exact scenario was what the team faced on April 11 and April 12. On April 12, the team hosted Central Lunenburg and junior pitcher Kailyn Spencer was on fire for the Bulldogs. Goochland was able to get a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Faith Gerdes got a lead off walk, and then it was some classic small ball from there.

Junior Jordyn Laing executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Gerdes to second. Sarah Ramsbottom grounded out to second base, moving Gerdes to third. Gerdes then scored on a passed ball. Given Spencer’s prowess on the mound against the Chargers, that run seemed like it might be the only run that would be needed. She struck out seven batters throughout the game. “I just hit my spots and I knew they were swinging at the high stuff, so I kept it there,” she said. “I tried to keep it low as well, that’s where the umpire was calling it.” Spencer had a perfect game through the first four innings

and the first two batters of the top of the fifth. But, then a Charger was hit by a pitch, giving Central Lunenburg its first baserunner of the game. The Chargers jumped on the opportunity with a firstpitch triple in the next at bat, scoring a run to tie the game. Central’s next batter reached on an error at second base, scoring the run to make it 2-1 Chargers. Goochland’s bats went ice cold in the bottom of the fifth, sixth and seventh, with only two of the final 11 batters for the Bulldogs reaching base, and none of them got into scoring position. “We get people on base,

but just can’t seem to string the hits together,” Spencer said. “We need to come together as a team like we were doing in the beginning of the season.” A 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh ended the game for the Bulldogs. On April 11, the team went 11 innings against Nottoway and lost 1-0. “We were just lacking confidence,” Henneberger said. “The leadership just wasn’t there. We were just going through the motions. They need to start talking and having fun.” Nottoway leads the district with a 7-1 record, 6-0 in the district. Goochland is second at 5-2, 5-2. Buckingham is third at 4-4, 4-3.

The Bulldogs will face tboth Nottoway and Buckingham in the first two games of May. Spencer said that the team needed to come back to practice after the back-to-back losses focused and ready to win. That was certainly accomplished as Goochland stopped the losing skid on April 14 with a 16-0 rout of Bluestone. Gerdes was 5 for 5 for the Bulldogs with 2 RBIs and three runs scored. Laing was 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and two runs scored. Catoria Towles was 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and three runs scored. Goochland played at home against Maggie Walker on Tuesday and hosts Amelia today.

Fun and safe ways to teach kids to swim wimming is a popular activity once temperatures heat up. Millions of people flock to beaches to dip their toes in the water, and scores more spend afternoons exploring the depths of backyard pools. Upon being introduced to the water, younger children may be somewhat apprehensive, as swimming in pools or oceans can be intimidating to youngsters. Parents should exercise extreme caution when teaching kids to swim, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that more than one in five fatal drowning victims are children under the age of 14. Although swimming can be dangerous, experts in pediatric and adolescent medicine affirm that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning considerably. Children whose parents swim may be eager to join mom and dad in the pool. The following are some tips for parents

S

as they start to develop a plan to teach their kids to swim.

Wait until the child is developmentally ready The American Association of Pediatrics recommends that parents wait until after a child’s fourth birthday to teach them how to swim. This is when children have developed enough to understand commands and have the motor skils required for swimming. At this point, parents can register children for swimming lessons with trained instructors.

face. Kids can sit with adults on pool steps or retrieve toys from within reach. An adult always should be nearby.

Wait before submerging kids The American Red Cross says to wait until a child is around age three before submerging him or her under the water. Young kids can swallow a lot of water, which can be dangerous. Sputtering water also may turn a child off to swimming completely.

Begin in calm water Introduce playing in the water early on Parents should make sure their children grow accustomed to playing in the water. Many kids start to like the water around the time they become toddlers, when bathing introduces them to splashing and bobbing toys. Use these opportunities to take your child into the water, so he or she acclimates to feeling the water on his or her body and

The open ocean can be daunting, even to adults. So it might be better to begin swimming lessons in a calm body of water, such as a lake or pool.

Invest in formal swimming lessons Parental perceptions and anxieties may interfere with parents’ abilities to properly teach their children how to swim. Therefore, hire third-

overlooked. Swimming is a great way to get fit, providing great cardiovascular exercise that’s easy on the joints. Swimming engages a variety of muscle groups, making it a great way to get a complete workout. The following are some additional benefits of including swimming as part of your exercise regimen. When swimming, muscles are worked hard, which can help build strength. Much of that work can be traced to the fact that

water is far more resistant than air, forcing a body in water to work harder to move than it would if it were walking on solid ground. Water buoyancy can enable people to do exercises that would be jarring on land. In water, roughly 90 percent of the body is buoyant. That means working out in the water will put less strain on the knees and hips when it comes to performing highimpact jumping exercises. Swimming is a great cardiovascular workout. Swimming can elevate the heart rate to an optimal level and work the lungs, too. Pushing oneself harder and harder can help to burn calories and lead to weight loss.

Just about every muscle is used when a body is swimming. Swimming targets the shoulders, back, arms, legs, hips, and gluteals without requiring complicated workout equipment. Swimming may help improve coordination, balance and posture. Swimming also may promote greater flexibility by stretching the body through fluid movements. While swimming is often considered a relaxing activity tailor-made for warm summer days, it also provides a complete and demanding workout that can benefit the body in a variety of ways. -Metro Creative

Families can get up and go together amilies often look for fun things to do together, and few things are more fun than physical activity. Choosing activities that combine fun with physical activity is a great way to bond as a family and get healthy at the same time. According to Let’s Move!, an initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to fight the problem of childhood obesity, children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Parents know it can sometimes be hard to get kids to disconnect from their devices long enough to get out and play. But Let’s Move! notes that kids who are supported by their families or surrounded

by others interested in physical activity are more likely to participate in such activities themselves. Families looking to get fit and grow closer can consider the following approaches to live healthier, more active lifestyles.

Give gifts that encourage activity Both youngsters and adults are enamored with the latest gadgets, but tablets and video game consoles won’t do much to make families more physically active. In lieu of

toys that promote sedentary lifestyles, give kids toys that encourage physical activity. Erect a basketball hoop in the driveway or go buy new bicycles for the whole family, resolving to go for a nightly ride together.

amily-friendly activities provide great opportunities for parents to strengthen the bonds they have with their children. But finding affordable, fun events the whole family can enjoy can sometimes prove challenging for budget-conscious parents. Few families can make it through a month without developing and adhering to a household budget. But even if money is tight, there are a host of affordable activities families can enjoy together.

Restrict TV time

Hiking

Establish house rules regarding how many hours of television kids and adults can watch each day. Kids will follow their parents’ lead with regard to how much television they watch, so parents should be mindful of their own viewing habits, resisting the temptation to plop down on the couch for several hours each night. Don’t turn on the television at night until the whole family has engaged in some physical activity.

Inexpensive activities

When running errands in town, take the kids along and walks or ride bicycles rather than drive. This is a great time for families to catch up, and walking or riding a bicycle is great exercise for adults and kids alike.

Let kids plan activities One great way to get kids excited about an active lifestyle is to let them plan family activities. Kids who are encouraged to come up with activities, whether it’s visiting the zoo or going kayaking as a family, are more likely to embrace those activities. - Metro Creative

One of the best things about the great outdoors is that it’s often free to enjoy. Research local parks to find ones that offer age-appropriate hiking trails. Parents with young children should look for parks that offer more relaxing hikes with well-established trails that do not require any difficult climbing. If the kids are a little older, parks with more challenging, less-developed trails may suffice. Prepare lunches at home and enjoy a family picnic in the park. Many parks do not charge entrance fees, and packing your own lunches will save on meals. The only cost you might be on the hook for is the fuel it takes to get from home to the great outdoors.

Bowling While bowling is not free, bowling remains a relatively inexpensive and family-friendly activity. Bowling alleys may offer discounted rates for children and lower rates during off-peak hours. Seniors may also be eligible for discounts, so bring grandma and grandpa along as well. Bumper bowling makes it possible for toddlers to join in the fun, too, so don’t be discouraged from bowling if your children are closer to preschool age than high school age.

Festivals Many communities host weekend festivals that offer various family-friendly activities. These festivals may focus on a particular town or city’s cultural history or offer wider appeal, such as an apple festival or a film festival for kids. These festivals tend to cater to families, offering games and possibly even rides kids will love. Adults, too, can enjoy such gatherings, as festivals often invite local restaurants and food and beverage merchants to set up booths and peddle their wares to hungry festival goers.

Volunteering Volunteering provides a unique way for parents to bond with their children while instilling a sense of community responsibility in their youngsters. Volunteering does not cost a dime, and parents can choose activities they feel will teach kids while simultaneously providing an activity they can enjoy. For example, local beach or park cleanup programs can teach kids about the importance of protecting the environment while also allowing them to enjoy the great outdoors. - Metro Creative

Discarded or lost fishing gear can prove harmful to wildlife. It’s easy for fish or other marine animals to get tangled in fishing line and hooks that were left behind by fishermen. Sinkers and other weights may be mistaken for food and injure unsuspecting animals. Even animals like ducks and other birds can swallow fishing tackle, which can lead to illness or starvation. Basics of horseback riding for beginners orseback riding is both a popular recreational pursuit and a mode of transportation on working farms and ranches. Many people have grown up around horses and are quite experienced with riding. Many others, however, have no such history. In order to prevent injury, novice riders must start with the basics. People of all ages and abilities can mount a horse and enjoy the experience. Although horseback riding can be fun and exciting, it also can be a bit nerve-wracking for first-time riders. While horseback riding is generally safe, whenever one is dealing with an animal of this size and height, the possibility for injury exists. Beginning to ride involves some knowledge and planning.

H

Become acclimated to horses Start spending time around ranches and stables to become familiar with the size and mannerisms of horses. Experienced riders can point out cues in body language that indicate whether a horse is pleased or skittish. Understanding equine body language can make it easier to successfully interact with the horse. For example, ears positioned forward generally indicate a horse is relaxed. When the ears are pinned backwards, this could be a sign of aggression.

Begin with a reputable and experienced riding instructor In the United States, instructors must be certified by the American Riding Instructors Association. In the United Kingdom, certification comes from the British Horse Society or the Association of British Riding Schools. People who want to ride can enroll in lessons taught by qualified instructors. Metro

Learn good horsemanship This involves much more than just being able to mount and ride. Learn how to put tack on the horse and how to clean and store equipment after use. In addition, learn how to properly groom the horse, which can be a special bonding time between human and horse. This also gives you the opportunity to assess the animal for any injuries or discomfort both before and after riding.

Horseback riding can be an enjoyable activity. Beginners should learn the basics before starting.

work together.

Try to keep emotions in check A horse will sense how you are feeling. If you are calm, the horse is more likely to be calm, while a nervous rider or one who lacks confidence might make the horse nervous as well.

Ride in an open area When starting out, you will have to learn how to move the reigns to steer and use your feet to guide the horse. Therefore, ride in an open area away from trees or fences so that there are no incidences of bumping into obstacles.

Take heed of a few safety tips Earn the trust of the horse

Dress appropriately for riding

Show up early to the stable and ask if you can feed and water the horse. This will help solidify the bond you have with the animal. The more opportunities a horse has to become acclimated with you, the better the two of you can read each other’s signals and the more cohesively you will

Beginners who aren’t sure if they will continue riding long-term should not invest in expensive riding clothes. A long pair of jeans or other pants that cover the legs and a decent pair of boots will be enough. Beginners should also wear a safety helmet.

Tricks to simplify outdoor entertaining ome of summer’s favorite moments happen right in your backyard: the sounds of children running around, the smells of freshcut grass and newly planted flowers, and the gathering of family and friends. Here are a few simple tricks to make your next soiree the best one yet:

S

Build Atmosphere Your patio and backyard are an extension of your home, so don’t limit your creativity to indoors. Avoid harsh overhead lighting and create an inviting summer atmosphere by stringing paper lanterns or lightbulbs across your deck or around the railings. While you want outdoor furniture to be stylish, you also want to make sure it provides comfort. Many outdoor furniture cushions are

Rather than keeping an outdoor cooler sitting in the corner, consider making a DIY picnic table with cooler storage or building a wooden crate for your existing cooler. Create space and balance by utilizing the corners of your deck, as well, with an accent plant, side table or a rustic bar cart.

For kids’ summer sleepovers, try an easy nonut butter recipe – perfect for dipping apples and carrots and refueling after an intense backyard game of flag football. Simply blend sunflower, flaxseed and sesame seeds, and you won’t need to worry about any gluten or nut allergies.

Create a grocery list so you’re not overwhelmed in the store. Dividing your list by appetizers, main courses and desserts will help you navigate. OF GOOCHLAND PARKS

Soap and water will do little to remove tar and other petroleum-based products from vehicles. Commercial tar removal products use a strong solvent or detergent to loosen the tar. This may include kerosene, mineral spirits or another item mixed with lubricants. Go slowly and use caution so that you remove the tar and not the paint. Drivers who are hesitant to clean their vehicles of common residue can have their cars or trucks professionally detailed, leaving the work in the hands of experts. -Metro Creative
