Preparation urged when heading out on the river Misjudging river float times, failing to plan often results in calls for rescue

As the weather heats up, many people in and around Goochland look forward to logging some quality time on the river. But whether that includes paddling, powerboating or simply floating down the James in an inner tube, Goochland Fire and Rescue personnel are hoping river enthusiasts will exercise some caution — and common sense — when hitting the water this summer. According to Goochland Fire Chief Bill McKay, one of the most common causes of trouble on the river is due to people neglecting to create a plan before heading out. Particularly when it comes to tubing, “people need to be aware of how long it is going to take to go from one point to another, and they need to know what they might encounter out on the water.” All too often, McKay said, people dangerously misjudge how long see River safety > 2

Gov. Terry McAuliffe has announced a new statewide initiative to study the state’s gaps in broadband coverage, an issue that remains a problem for many rural counties including Goochland. The Governor announced the initiative on May 24 at a ceremony to sign House Bill 912, which clarifies and improves the process for installing communications infrastructure, benefiting rural communities. The new initiative, RUOnlineVA, provides a platform for Virginia residents and businesses to notify the Commonwealth whether or not they have access to broadband Internet connections. In Goochland, many residents have repeatedly appealed to county leaders for help in bringing broadband coverage to areas where it is not yet available. River safety continued from >1 it will take to float a certain distance — from Westview on the James to Maidens, for example, a distance of about nine miles — and end up being caught on the water after dark. McKay said the department averages at least one rescue a week during the peak time between Memorial Day and Labor Day, a period that sees many groups attempt to float down the river together.

Sometimes groups become separated, and those unfamiliar with the river may fail to see landings and continue downstream. McKay said that the reasons people end up in trouble vary, but says most can be prevented by simply being prepared . According to McKay, this includes:

Effort nets over 31,000 pounds of food for county residents in need Numerous local groups donated time, supplies By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Thanks to the efforts of countless community volunteers, a recent food drive in Goochland was an unqualified success. In April, seeing the need to feed over 1,800 food-insecure Goochland residents, Goochland Free Clinic and

Family Services (GFCFS), Harvest Food Pantry at Victory Christian Church, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Neighbors Food Pantry at St. Matthews UMC, and Perkins Baptist Church Food Pantry launched the community-wide “Hunger Hurts, Goochland Gathers” food drive. By the time all was said and done, the drive had collected 31,034 pounds of food for residents in need. Pitching in to help with the drive were groups from all over the county, including the Goochland Rotary Club, the

local schools, and employees at the County Administration Building. The Richmond Strikers brought in over 400 pounds of food, then matched $1 per pound. GFCFS Food Pantry Manager Terry Ebright said she was once again amazed at the generosity of the Goochland residents. “Hunger does not take a vacation, and we just want to offer a huge thank you to everybody” she said. “It really took an entire community to do this.”

Willis continued from >1 It happened at Goochland’s distinguished Fox Head Inn, where a teenaged Willis had started as a dishwasher and quickly graduated to prep work, when the head chef directed him to thinly slice an English cucumber. The slices needed to be perfectly even and thin enough to float atop a bowl of cucumber soup, and Willis delivered beautifully. It was right then, Willis says, when he saw how a chef’s skill could elevate a simple dish into a work of art that would delight the people waiting in the dining room, that he began his culinary journey in earnest. It wasn’t that he immediately cloistered himself in the kitchen: Willis still made time while at Goochland High School to captain the soccer team his junior and senior year, and to excel in chemistry. In fact, when he enrolled at East Carolina University in 1996, Willis had his sights set on a career as a pharmacist. Soon, however, he realized his true passion lay elsewhere. He switched his major to hospitality management and never looked back. To many of those who have shared a kitchen with

him over the years, including chef and restaurant owner Ralph Walton, it was a wise move. Walton, the founder of the celebrated Greenville, North Carolina, restaurant CPW’s, hired the promising young chef in 1999. He says it didn’t take long for Willis to prove his mettle. “Just after Pat began working with us, our two most experienced sauté cooks left for other careers and suddenly Pat was the last man standing,” Walton recalls. “I will never forget how nervous I was, as the restaurant was just beginning to buzz and I was really concerned about this young man being able to take the lead and keep our momentum intact. The happy ending was that he not only kept us alive, but he raised the bar and we went to the next level.” To Walton, one of Willis’ greatest gifts as a chef is his ability to chart his own course. From the beginning, “he took his own approach to cooking more than most other young chefs,” Walton says. “He had the inherent need to understand the role of each ingredient and the technique of how it should be prepared to achieve the dishes’ proper synergy. It quickly got to the point that

I could scratch a recipe out on paper with no directions and he would walk into the kitchen and prepare it perfectly. I think he took that ability with him to Lemaire. I hated to lose him, but I knew he had a destiny elsewhere.” These days, Willis spends his days juggling the myriad responsibilities involved in heading up one of Richmond’s most critically acclaimed restaurants, a task he’s not afraid to admit was intimidating at first. Though taking over the reins from former Lemaire Executive Chef Walter Bundy last January was the opportunity of a lifetime, it brings its own challenges, Willis says. Still, he says, after serving at the restaurant since 2009, first as a line cook and then as Bundy’s sous chef since 2012, he felt ready to give it his all. Willis describes Bundy as one of the true forefathers of Richmond’s burgeoning restaurant scene — and counts CPW’s Walton as perhaps the single biggest influence in his life as a chef — but he still credits the two Goochland restaurants where he worked while in high school, The Fox Head Inn and Tanglewood Ordinary, with igniting his passion for the restaurant life. “Goochland itself was just an amazing place to grow up,” Willis said, “and a lot of who I am came from working in those two places.” To Tanglewood Ordinary co-owner Anne Hardwick, the admiration is certainly mutual. “Patrick was with us early in our 30 years here at Tanglewood Ordinary and is fondly remembered for his quiet and steady focus on his work and his delightful, low key sense of humor,” Hardwick said. “It was always a pleasure to be in the kitchen when Patrick was working.”

Silence truly is golden By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As happens from time to time, I experienced a brief weatherrelated power outage at my house the other day. It was no big deal, except for the fact that I happened to be home alone at the time. This meant that once the power went out — taking with it all the usual noise from televisions, radios, appliances and every other squawking, whirring, buzzing thing we own — the place was eerily silent. Actually, “eerily” may be the wrong word. The house was, in fact, beautifully, gloriously, deliciously silent. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate noise. I make plenty of it. But I’ve also recently become more cognizant of just how much noise I surround myself with and how few times during the day I allow myself to experience actual silence. I doubt I’m alone in this. Many of us fall asleep to the sound of televisions and wake up to the blaring of an alarm clock. We walk around with hands-free phones, carry our music everywhere, and spend our days surrounded by the ever-present hum of other people’s conversations. A restaurant I went to the other day made sure to have music piped into the restrooms, lest customers spend even a fraction of their evening in silence.

Silence was not always such an alien notion. I can remember years ago, driving across the magnificently desolate Texas plains through areas where it wasn’t even possible to pick up a radio station. If the silence wasn’t exactly my first choice (the car’s tape deck was broken), it wasn’t entirely unpleasant. These days, I very rarely drive even around the corner without the drone of talk radio in the background. If I’m going for a walk, I take my iPod. If I’m stuck waiting in a very long line, I call someone on the phone or chat up the person in front of me (yes, I’m that person). Very rarely am I ever simply silent. I also am not alone in considering the ramifications of this: Several recent research studies have pointed to the impact of constant noise on everything from our stress levels to our attention spans. Silence, as it turns out, may be more golden than we thought. The power outage the other day lasted only a few minutes — not even the 10 that some researchers have recommended that we try to spend in silence every day. But as I took in the sudden, striking lack of noise in my house, I suddenly recalled a quote I once read from the Persian poet Rumi. “Silence is the language of God,” he wrote. “Everything else is poor translation.”

Honoring the ones among us who can’t simply ‘look away’ By Jim RidolphI Contributing Columnist

Americans possess a sense of unique voyeurism that I’m not sure is seen in any other place on the planet … or maybe it is. It would take a world traveler much more experienced than me to confirm that theory, but I’m convinced we have our fair share of interested onlookers right here in the good ol’ USA. While recently sitting stuck in a not unusual traffic jam on

EMS workers respond to horrific scenes on a daily basis, and their commitment and dedication has nothing to do with voyeurism or a meddling sense of curiosity. Interstate 95, I couldn’t imagine what could cause traffic to come to a complete halt in both lanes of traffic. As we inched our way along closer to the incident, I couldn’t imagine what type of carnage could cause such a delay. I wanted some prewarning of any gorey or gutsy car accident so I could avoid looking. That’s right. I’m one of the few people who doesn’t want to see the blood, guts and tragedy associated with the misery of some poor soul who has met an unfortunate end on the road. I’m convinced that I’m in a small majority of Americans who don’t feel a need to see the

destruction, or find out what could have happened … or how the people surrounding the incident are reacting. It’s a scene I don’t mind missing, and witnessing serious car accidents, some of them my own, have taught me that sometimes it’s better to look the other way. That certainly wasn’t the case on I-95 as we finally reached the incident close to the Ladysmith exit. A insignificant looking man was changing a tire in the service lane of the road. A Virginia State Police trooper had pulled to the side and flashed his lights to make sure no one hit the guy as they changed the flat. That mundane act drew the attention of thousands of eyeballs as cars slowed almost to a stop to witness the amazing feat that had stopped traffic for miles in either direction. Fortunately, there is a group of people who flock to serious incidents on the road and in our homes not to onlook and not out of a sense of curiousity. EMS workers respond to

horrific scenes on a daily basis, and they don’t have the luxury to look away. Their commitment and dedication has nothing to do with voyeurism or a meddling sense of curiousity. May 15 to May 21 was National EMS week, a six-day period dedicated to the men and women who face life’s dangers each day, and respond to them. When things get bad enough in our life, there’s an EMS worker there to answer the call. It’s easy to take their service for granted. Thanks to the efficient and professional way they perform their jobs, it’s easy to assume they’ll always be there. Due to the dedication and commitment to their calling, they will be. But the jobs they perform should always be a target for our admiration and appreciation of the services they provide day in and day out. Across Virginia, more than 34,000 EMS providers ensure the safety and welfare of our families, our livelihoods and our sense of security.

Somers of Lively, Va.; daughter, Stephanie Bowie Clohessy (Ryan) of Richmond, Va.; her sister, Tracey Somers Ficklin (Mathew); niece, Emily Ficklin Hoar (Neal); grandnephew, Thomas Neal Hoar III; and grandniece, Madison Hoar of Kilmarnock Va.; her brother-in-law and sisterin-law, Ted and Kimberley Price; and nephew, Brady Price of Goochland Va.; her stepdaughter, Erin Alba (Pat); stepgrandsons, Nicholas, Weston and Dylan of San Antonio, Texas; her stepson, Daniel Price (Jessica) of Austin, Texas; stepniece, Angie Burgett (Chad); stepgrandnephews, Ethan and Lucas Burgett of Des Moines, Iowa; her “sister-in-law,” Claudia Yelton and family of Richmond, Va.; and lifelong friend, Pat Lewis of Lively, Va. and a dear friend, Joanie Beverly Morris of Richmond, Va. She also leaves to cherish her memory numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Sharon graduated in the class of 1975 from Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Va. She studied at the Braxton School of Business in the Legal Secretarial Program. She was

a legal assistant for Hunton and Williams for a number of years, before turning her attention to being home with her daughter and devoting her time to caring for children. She later embarked on a new career in the real estate business as a realtor and site agent for Metropolitan Real Estate Inc. for seven years, before her retirement. Sharon was a lover of music. She had a lovely voice and was a talented pianist, serving her home church, Lebanon Baptist for many years. She enjoyed singing in the church choir at Gayton Baptist Church and later became a member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond. Sharon was at peace on the river. She enjoyed boating and fishing, especially with her beloved father and continued the tradition even after his death. Above all else, she adored and treasured her family. She loved the theater, animals of any kind, the color and fragrance of spring flowers, the soft glow of a room lit with candles, the sprinkle of light coming from sparkling Christmas ornaments and singing around a piano. Our precious Sharon had a beautifully contagious laugh and an engaging personality. The room was happier when she was in it. We will hold her always in our hearts. The family would like to extend their thanks to the compassionate staff at Glenburnie Nursing Home for their care for Sharon. Services were held on Wednesday, June 1, at Lebanon Baptist Church, in Alfonso. Interment followed after the service in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to At Home Care Hospice, 2922 W. Marshall St., Richmond, Va. 23230 or Lebanon Baptist Church, 1712 Lara Ridge Rd., Lancaster, Va. 22503.

Goochland’s Andrew Harcum gets his lead off first base while Amelia first baseman Bryan Harris holds him on. The Bulldogs defeated Amelia to win the Conference 34 championship on Friday, May 27.

Goochland sports grab three conference titles By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Following a 10-0 blowout of Bluestone in the opening round of the Conference 34 playoffs, one obstacle remained between Goochland and a conference title. And visiting Amelia had the potential to derail the Bulldog’s playoff run. Starting pitcher Tanner Bradshaw made sure that didn’t happen as the junior right hander pitched four no-

hit innings, never allowing the Raiders to gain an edge at the plate. And Bulldog hitters were making solid connections with starter Joshua Dawson’s pitches, but the hard hit balls weren’t falling in for hits. “You have to keep the ball down against good teams like this. Everyone at this level can catch fly balls, so we just needed to hit line drives” coach Wes Farkas said after the win. In the fifth inning, lead off hitter John King reached on a well placed

bunt and promptly stole second base. Andrew Harcum singled and King crossed the plate to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Coleman Duty drove in Harcum to double the lead. Nick Norman entered the game in the fifth inning and secured the shutout, and the Bulldogs offense continued to manufacture runs. Farkas is using his pitching arms sparingly as the playoffs continue, a philosophy he has employed for most of the year.

“At this point in the season, we are keeping a close eye on pitch counts,” Farkas said.”Tanner was on today but I didn’t want to leave him out there to get tired. We’ve pitched by committee all year,” the coach added. Nathan Bussells led off the sixth inning with a double and Frank Mayosky followed with a single. Bussells eventually scored on a passed ball. Harcum added two more RBIs with a solid single, and eventually scored to make it 6-0.

“I knew we needed a little insurance and I wanted to put some pressure on their pitcher for the last couple of innings, Harcum said. “A new pitcher came in and it made me nervous because I hadn’t seen him before. He threw me a good pitch and I just go hold of it,” he added. Heading in to the regional playoffs next week, Harcum said this team may have what it takes to advance. see Bulldogs> 12

Bulldogs continued from >11 “We know we have a big challenge ahead, but this team is playing well at the right time,” he said. “All of the other teams will get better as the playoffs continue, and so will we.” Regarding Harcum’s 3 RBIs and timely hits, Farkas said, “He’s our spark plug; our big hit guy.” Bradshaw also likes this team’s chances to advance. “We have deep pitching so that should help us as we continue to play,” Bradshaw said. “Coach Farkas lets everybody do their job. If we stick together, we have a good shot.” The team began regional play Monday with a matchup against Nandua, winning 4-0. Goochland played at Strasburg on June 1. The Goochland girls soccer team defeated Northhampton to capture the Conference 34 title. On May 30, the Bulldogs went to overtime against King William and edged the Cavaliers 3-2 on an overtime goal by Maddie Goff. The Bulldogs went to Clarke County on June 1. The softball team edged Nottoway 2-1 to take the conference crown and defeated Maggie Walker 5-0 on May 30 to advance to the regional semifinals. They traveled to Page County on June 1. The boys soccer team lost to Prince Edward 6-2 and fell to Maggie Walker 3-0 in the regional opener.

BASKETBALL Goochland basketball will be hosting a basketball camp June 6-9 from 8 a.m. to noon. The camp is for current second through ninth graders. It is $60 for first year attendees and $50 for returning players. Contact coach Preston Gordon to sign up.

Goochland’s Rachel McCann (center) runs up field with Karina Herrera-Cervantes (40) and Maddie Goff (15). The three girls each scored a goal against King William.

McCann going for it all in her senior season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland senior forward Rachel McCann has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Usually, that place is in front of the net and the right time is when the ball is headed her way and she deposits it in the back of the net. But, she was in just as an important place on May 30 in the Region 2A East opener against King William. In overtime, tied at two goals each, McCann ran down a ball deep in King William territory, forcing the Cavaliers’ to kick it away. The Bulldogs earned a

corner kick, which McCann quickly put back in play, passing it to teammate Erin Wachter. Wachter moved the ball in front to Maddie Goff, who beat the King William keeper for the would-be winning goal. McCann wrote in an email that the trio has known from the start of this season that they would be a force to be reckoned with. “On the left side I have Maddie and Erin, who I absolutely love working with me,” she wrote. “From the start of the season, we would know where each other would be. We work so well together.” McCann scored one of

the first two goals against the Cavaliers, with freshman Karina Herrera-Cervantes scoring the other. Scoring goals has been a theme for McCann this season. “Me and Madie Panas work really well together,” she said. “That’s been a huge advantage.” McCann also noted that defenders Brenda Moore and Hannah Herman have done a stellar job this season as well. “Without a defense, there would be nobody to return the ball back to the offense,” she wrote. McCann’s on field success is due in large part to the support of her mother, Lisa.

McCann said that she is a big reason why she has made it this far in her soccer career. “(Lisa) hasn’t missed a game in I don’t even know how many years,” Rachel wrote. “I couldn’t do this without her support. Every game, she’s the one person I look for before it even starts to make sure she is there.” Soccer is a family affair for the McCanns, as Rachel’s older sister played and was a huge inspiration for her to take her game to the next level. “We would just battle it out,” she said. “That’s honestly has helped me with my career, getting better, having her to strive to be as good as

her. I just love the game.” As the Bulldogs traveled to play Clarke County on June 1 in the Region 2A East semifinal, McCann will once again be the focal point of the Goochland attack. And, according to her, for the Bulldogs to continue to be successful, it is all about believing in themselves. “If we believe we can win, we will win,” she said. McCann said that she would be “the happiest girl in the world” to finish the season with some championships. “Our volleyball team won states this year and football won a few years back,” she said. “It’s our turn.”
