Repair work continues on a section of petroleum transmission pipeline located near the border of Goochland and Henrico, after a leak was discovered late last week. According to Goochland County Fire Rescue Chief Bill MacKay, the leak was discovered after members of a grass-cutting crew employed by the pipeline’s owner, Plantation Pipeline, reported an odor of petroleum while working in the area. While several state and federal agencies responded to the scene, including representatives from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the EPA, and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, MacKay confirmed Monday that there was never any threat to county residents or their property. “This was a very, very minor incident,” said MacKay, though he added that the risk to area residents could have been greater had the see Pipeline > 8

Goochland resident Carole Roberts is shown at Cuba’s Marina de Vita pier during a sailing trip in April.

For couple, sailing to Cuba was eye-opener

G

oochland residents Carole and Wayne Roberts hadn’t planned on going to Cuba. But when the opportunity presented itself — during a sailing trip that had already taken them down the Eastern Seaboard and across t to the Bahamas — the couple found they could not resist. The owners of a1972 Pearson 39C they named Nepenthe, the two have spent decades sailing to destinations near and far. They bought

their first boat when Wayne was in the Army and stationed in Panama, and made a trip around the world in the 1970s. This year, after reaching Duncan Town (located on Ragged Island, in the Bahamas), “we decided to do something different, and continued from Duncan Town to Cuba,” said Wayne of the decision to make the 65-mile hop. “Completely impulsive, but we happened to have charts and a cruising guide.” see Cuba > 3

An event next week in Goochland will bring churches of many denominations together in the heart of the county for a day of entertainment, food and fellowship. The first-ever Goochland County Fellowship Community Day will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, at the Goochland Sports Complex (1800 Sandy Hook Road). Sponsored by the Goochlandbased Living Purpose Ministries, the free event will feature live music from area church choirs, inflatable bounce houses for children, and food and craft vendors. In addition, attendees will be able to take part in a job fair and several workshops and prayer sessions. A car show and 3-on-3 basketball tournament will also be part see Community Day > 8

Cuba continued from >1 Cuba, an island nation of just over 11 million people has been the subject of much talk in recent months, particularly after President Obama’s historic visit to the country in March. This month also marks one year since the reopening of both the United States Embassy in Cuba, and the Cuban Embassy in Washington, D.C. To the Roberts, the Cuba they found was a mysterious place, at once welcoming and determinedly closed. The following is an account of their journey, as told by Wayne:

W

e arrived off Bahia de Vita at 3 a.m. on March 31. We were the first US yacht to enter Cuba after President Obama’s trip there. We flew our “Q” flag (designating “quarantine,” or not yet checked) and anchored at the entrance to Bahia de Vita. A few hours later a small outboard launch guided us to the quarantine anchorage, where we joined six other vessels (Canadian, German, and French) awaiting clearance. Several must have arrived late the previous day since only one of them had passed us going in. The first check was by the port physician, who took our tem-

We then took down the “Q” flag to fly the Cuban courtesy flag. Since we were the final boat to check in that day, the doctor rode back to the marina with us. The berth was Tahiti style: Drop the anchor as far across the channel as you dare, then

back down between two other boats while letting out chain, fastening stern to the pier. Carole was steering. I was handling the anchor. Who was fending off and passing lines to the pier? Doctor Rolando! After the usual hauling and shouting we tied up successfully and found it to be quite convenient for a boat with a stern ladder. There were lots of officials (we counted six). The one who spoke some English was apologetic about the number of forms--we filled out the same information in several copies for several officials Payment for everything in Puerto de Vita was made on departure so we could take a taxi to get dollars changed at a branch bank in a hotel. The exchange rates are entirely artificial since there is no banking relationship between the US and Cuba. One CUC (Convertable Peso) costs about $1.20. There are 24 local pesos per CUC. CUCs can be used in the marinas and resorts, but local pesos are used at the local markets. The word was out to welcome US cruisers. Every official we met was pleasant and courteous. Inspections were cursory—they never even went into our stern cabin. They did have a drug-sniffing dog, a Springer Spaniel who must have been 15 years old. Sailing continued from >3 deep ocean swells. Anchorages behind the fringing reef are protected by reefs below sea level, so they don’t seem particularly secure. We were permitted ashore at international marinas and resorts. There are two in the area we covered, Vita and Guillermo. We could stop overnight to rest in other places, and were permitted ashore on uninhabited cays and islands. We were not permitted ashore in populated areas. The officials explained that it was for the inhabitants safety, not ours. Apparently they face sanctions for unsupervised contact with foreigners. It is possible to take a bus tour to the interior of the country, but visitors are accompanied by guides at all times. *** Puerto DeVita is in a rural area. We were discouraged from renting an automobile (the minimum rental is three days and driving is a challenge).

Roads have potholes the size of bathtubs, and there are more horse carts than automobiles. The roads look like Amish conventions, except the carts are better decorated. This was the only taste of life in Cuba we got. We were never permitted to be in contact with a Cuban national who had not been approved by the government. Access to the marina was controlled so we had no choice of cabs. The taxi was a Russian-built Lada, which made a Yugo look good. We went to a bank branch at an international hotel, the Bambu restaurant in Santa Lucia (we were the only customers) and a local Saturday market. The cab driver was also our “watcher.” He was always within “shouting distance” and knew where we were and with whom we interfaced. The custom is to pay for the entire trip at the end, so cab hopping was not an option. The restaurant was good and moderately priced, although, like everything we saw in Cuba, it was well worn.

A trip to the Santa Lucia Farmers Market during the Roberts’ visit offered a glimpse of the island’s famous antique cars.

The waitress was attentive but very quiet — small wonder since for her entire life we have been the enemy, and now she was to welcome us. She probably had no idea what to expect, but Carole and I are about as threatening as a yellow lab. Vita had a reputation for problems with rats and we used rat guards on our lines. There was no problem with rats. The Canadians next to us said that about four years ago the Cubans had eaten them all, thanks to the Soviet agriculture model. We still saw a shortage economy. It took our taxi driver three tries to find a shop with bread. Shelves were generally bare, and stalls at the market ran out of produce quickly. Puerto Padre was our next stop after a 38 nautical miles (NM) hop along the coast. We anchored just inside the mouth of the river and called the Capitan del Puerto on VHF channel 16 upon arrival. He wanted us to move, but we were unsure

as to where. He finally gave us the latitude and longitude of our anchorage, which he said was thirty minutes away, but we soon figured out that when he said “thirty” minutes latitude he meant “thirteen.” We anchored in a spot about two miles upriver in the bay just off the Coast Guard dock, which was quiet and protected all night. In the morning we again radioed the port captain for permission to depart, and he directed us to a spot under a gantry crane. The customs agent and her interpreter seemed uncertain as to where to direct us so that we could tie up and they could get aboard; there were no facilities for small boats and they had no vessel at their disposal. We finally tied up to a huge fender for merchant ships. The agent was very polite, welcomed us, checked our papers and asked a few questions. She performed a cursory check of the boat, then cleared us all the way to Guillermo.

*** Our next hop was about 19 NM to Bahia Manati. Again we anchored just inside the river entrance and radioed for instructions. There was no translator, but the Port Captain said “Come to my port!” We motored up the river past an abandoned concrete pier and were directed by hand gestures towards a fishing boat at the end of a pier. We thought we were to tie up to the pier or the boat, but through wild armwaving and pointing understood we were to anchor off the pier. We radioed again in the morning and understood that no departure inspection was required. The only English word we heard was “welcome,” which was inserted out of context. We then made a 23 NM trip to Punta de Practicos. Bahia de Nuevitas is a restricted area which we were told was off limits to foreigners. We could anchor behind the fringing reef or just inside the mouth of the bay. The shore was an active

resort or recreation area with a lot of beachgoers and swimmers until the weather turned to a moderate northerly, and the swells ran into the bay. Our call was not acknowledged by the port authorities. At dusk we saw a Cuban Navy Tug tow in a disabled Cuban Navy boat, and heard chatter on the radio about “Los Americanos,” but were otherwise ignored. *** We were not unhappy to leave Punta Practicos for Cayo Confites, a 48 NM trip which took us to more familiar geography, the reefs and cays of the Archipielago de Camaguey and adjacent to the shipping lanes of the Old Bahama Channel. The cays are small, the reefs submerged and the anchorages open to ocean swells. Cayo Confites is a welcome partially protected anchorage behind a small cay on which is a coast guard station. When we contacted them by radio they did not have to come aboard, and see Island > 10

A show to end all shows By Roslyn Ryan Editor

It’s probably not wise for me to reveal this, but I have been sitting for some time on an idea for a television show that — should it get picked up by any major network — promises to bring me untold riches. The show? “The Apprentice: Oval Office.” The premise of the show is astonishingly simple (you may have already figured it out): One lucky contestant, plucked at random from a pool of sureto-be eager applicants, is given the chance to live a simulated month in the life of the President of the United States. Given the right treatment, this thing could be huge — huge! Picture a replica Oval Office, actors tasked to serve as security personal and a full staff at his beck and call. Here’s the catch: During that month, whoever the lucky winner was would be forced to make some very difficult decisions — at least one a day — based on statements they made in their applications to get on the show. In other words, if that person thought it would be a good idea to roll back Obamacare, he or she could do it with the stroke of a pen. If that person, on the other hand, wanted to fix the national debt

problem — done! Bomb Iran. Check! Close the borders. Check! Lower taxes, punch Putin, nominate sock puppets to cabinet posts — check, check, check! As you consider the merits of this show from an entertainment perspective, you may be wondering what would be so interesting about watching a Regular Joe playing President in a make-believe White House. The fun part, I believe, would actually come once the week was over. That, my friends, is when we let slip the dogs of war. And by “dogs” I mean every political analyst, strategist, think tank thinker and number-crunching ninja we can find and let them point out the probable impact of each and every decision made. Most of the ersatz Commander-in-Chief ’s new policies and sweeping “fixes” would likely be easily dismantled, deflated and debunked (probably because they were a violation of Constitutional Law or just grossly irresponsible). The beautiful part of all this — really beautiful folks, believe me — is that it would only be a television show. You could turn it off. Should The Donald walk away with the presidency this November, sadly, we won’t be able to anymore.

Difficult answers to very serious issues By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Sometimes I feel like it’s a game of 20 questions around here. It’s a feeling any parent of four experiences as children are naturally curious, and they often seek their parents out as the first line of authority on almost any subject. I come up with answers to most of the queries, but last week presented a unique challenge for any parent who faces an unexpected question from a young child. “What’s wrong with America?” one of my children asked as the news blasted reports of police officers being attacked in Dallas accompanied by news of police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana. I began by explaining the importance of peaceful protest in our nation, and the role of leaders who refused to be silent in the face of adversity in the

greatness of our nation. But explaining racism to a generation of children who have no realistic experience of discrimination is a difficult chore. Thankfully, they have grown up, at least to this point, in a world where judging people by color or culture is unacceptable. I often brag that I’ve never heard one of them describe a friend by color, even in the most innocent of terms. I contrasted their experience with mine, and realized my entire life has been spent in the shadow of a struggle for equality in America — and it hasn’t always been pretty. That was painfully evident last week as Americans took to the streets to protest police treatment of African American males. Emotions were running high bolstered by new technology that captured two of the incidents, and the public got a real-time view at the encounters. I told my children that I learned

long ago not to react prematurely to situations that seem abundantly clear at first glance but appear differently after further examination. Without the facts, none of us can judge what actually happened in any of these cases, but the stark reality of the video is difficult to explain. In both cases, men died in situations that certainly didn’t seem life-threatening on the surface. In Dallas, the situation seems very different in my estimation. A coldblooded attack on America’s first line of defense, the police, cannot be justified in any conceivable scenario. Although the Dallas shooter was motivated by racism, the act was more about hate and bigotry than equality and justice. Cowardly confrontations like the assault in Dallas leave no room for discussion of culture, or class or inequality. There is no justification. see Ridolphi > page 7

Ridolphi continued from >6 That left my children still puzzled regarding the shooting of men in St. Paul and Baton Rouge by police. As I attempted to explain the fear that many minority Americans feel when interacting with police, I was drawn to words from a man whom I usually don’t share any common ground: Newt Gingrich. The former Speaker of the House was expressing his thoughts on the week’s events and, more specifically, expressing an opinion on race relations in America. He explained that white Americans cannot understand how it feels to be black in America. Our communities don’t experience the challenges of discrimination, the frustration of inferior schools and the horror of a violent and a hatefilled legacy. As I tried to come up with reasonable responses to impossible questions, I realized how race in America had played a major role in my life and how the journey of equality began in my childhood but continues in my maturity. “Was racism worse when you were a kid, Daddy? That’s a tough one. The volunteers, as much as the paid, or career, firefighters, are truly unsung heroes in our community. As every community changes, however, with age and with a stressed economy, we lose these valuable men and women, and we are rightfully concerned about maintaining a reasonable level of service. In just a few words, here is what we are asking for: a robust task force, comprised of both

significant progress in their acceptance of diversity, but I have to question how far we’ve come as a society. And, maybe it takes more than a lifetime to change centuries of misguided beliefs and prejudices, and the progress is sometimes so slow it seems painful. I told my children that murdering police or throwing rocks and bottles at the very men and women charged with protecting us quickly transforms participants from peaceful protesters to criminals. In the end, like most of us, I didn’t have adequate answers to tough questions our nation has

been dealing with for decades, even centuries. We agreed that every American needs to readdress the issue of race in America and commit to a new unity that finally erases a systemic problem that holds us back as a nation. But, they, like most of us, enter this week with a new realization of the task that lies ahead, scratching our heads and wondering how far we still have to go. They, like me, believe that change and transition are the lifeblood of a vibrant society. Problem is, it doesn’t always come easy.

Expanded GFCFS program offers help to victims of sexual violence Contributed report

Starting this month, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) will expand its newest critical assistance program, Domestic Violence Services, to also serve individuals and families affected by sexual violence. Sexual violence includes rape, sexual harassment, and other behaviors of an unwanted sexual nature. In January 2015, GFCFS began offering Domestic Violence Services in Goochland. Since then, the program has served 82 individuals affected by domestic violence. Services for anyone impacted by domestic violence, regardless of income or gender include a 24-hour hotline (804980-6267), counseling and case management, court advocacy, information and

referral, safety planning, and emergency shelter. The program also offers community training and education, as well as debriefing, consulting and technical assistance for those trying to help survivors in Goochland. “Like domestic violence, sexual violence can happen to anyone of any background,” said Carol Dunlap, Family Services Director at GFCFS. “The past eighteen months has shown us that there is a substantial demand for these services in the Goochland community - more than we anticipated. We are pleased that GFCFS is able expand services to help those in intimate and family, and sexual violence situations.” It is important to remember that sex-

ual assault is never the survivor’s fault, no matter their clothing, occupation, or behavior. If you or someone you know has experienced domestic or sexual violence, please do not hesitate to call to seek help. The GFCFS Domestic and Sexual Violence Services program serves all victims and survivors regardless of income, gender, and sexual orientation. The program supports individuals whether they are staying in the relationship, are planning to leave, or have already ended the relationship. The 24-hour hotline phone number is (804) 980-6267. For more information, call the hotline or email Sara Babb, Domestic and Sexual Violence Program Coordinator at sbabb@goochlandva.us.

The event is free to all spectators, and the cost to enter the car show or the 3-on3 basketball tournament is $25. All money raised from the Goochland County Fellowship Community Day will be donated to the CARITAS shelter and the Goochland Food Pantry.

While Wilson was quick to offer praise to the members of the planning committee, the county employees of Goochland, and the Goochland Parks and Recreation Department for all the work done so far in organizing the event, she reserved a special “thank you” for one decidedly higher up. “God has been the author, and He will be the finisher,” Wilson said joyfully. “That’s how we are able to do it.”

leak itself was smaller than a pencil. The leak occurred about 100 yards south of River Road, between South Gaskins Road in Henrico and Blair Road in Goochland. Drivers are urged to use caution in the area while repairs are completed. Repair work will include the replacement of a 100-foot section of pipeline, and

is expected to continue for several weeks. According to a report MacKay sent to the Goochland Board of Supervisors on Monday, the area of pipe where the leak occurred was installed in 1964 and had a prior repair done in 1988. The pipeline is the primary line to the Newington Tank Farm in Fairfax County and is also the primary feed for Reagan National Airport.

made sure we knew how welcome we were and that they were there if we needed any assistance. Next we made a 37 NM hop and stopped at Cayo Paredon Grande, which had a distinctive orange and black checkered lighthouse and an abandoned coast guard station. A few locals arrived in the afternoon to swim and shellfish along the otherwise abandoned coast. Heading 19 NM northwest, our next stop was at Punta Cuerra on Cayo Coco, a developed bay with several resorts and a lot of construction going on. The beaches were crowded; there was a glass-bottom boat and numerous small Hobie Cats [small sailing catamaran]. One of the Hobies sailed close by and a man on board said that ours was the first American boat he had ever seen. A 12NM trip inside the reef took us to Cayo Guillermo, which is a full-scale international marina adjacent to an international resort. Navigation to the marina entrance required a lot of faith in the chart, and by

the time we saw the entrance the current was so strong we almost missed it. The cruising guide said there was a bar at the north side of the entrance. Wrong! The bar is at the south side. We finally hugged the north side and tied up at a fueling dock just inside. We fueled up, and were able to look at the pier prior to moving to our assigned berth. We were the only foreign vessel in the marina — most of the other boats were local sportsfishermen and tour boats. We spent our days there walking to the nearest hotel to eat lunch at their magnificent buffet and buy souvenirs of Cuba. Cayo Guillermo has 14 hotel/resorts, and, as is the rule at resorts, they are entirely removed from reality. The island is separated from the mainland by an 8 kilometer causeway. Both the resort and the marina are gated, but we were not ever stopped or checked. We did notice that when staff arrived by bus they had to exit the bus, have their papers checked, wait while the police inspected the inside of the bus, then re-embark for their destinations. We also saw

a SWAT-like group of men in uniform, heavily armed with an armored car just outside the resort, involved in some type of operation or exercise. They ignored us, and we did not stop to ask what they were doing. Our departure required checking with every official in the marina. Since we were the only foreign vessel there, they didn’t have much else to do. Again they made sure we knew we were welcome, checked us for drugs and stowaways, and we returned to the US via the Old Bahama Channel and Cay Sal. Life in Cuba is tightly controlled. We felt stifled by being restricted and observed. There is, however, none of the rubbish and squalor found in other Latin American countries. We did not see heavy security gates and barred windows on businesses and residences. They obviously want our money, not our politics. To be successful they will have to figure out how to let us loose to spend. Are we glad we visited? Yes, quite an experience. We were reminded of the prosperity and freedom we take for granted here in the U.S. Will we go again? No, unless restrictions are eased.

BLANCHE. WILLIAMS Mrs. Blanche T. Williams, 90, of Columbia, departed this life July 6, at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital. According to Google Maps, it takes 12 hours on a direct flight to get from Maidens to Roth, Germany. It is over 4,200 miles away. However, for triathlete Clair Norman, a resident of Maidens, it is all worth it. The value of the trip is not only competing internationally in the world’s largest long-distance triathalon, known as Challenge Roth, but also to spread a meaningful message for her and her family. Norman is the aunt of Cameron Gallagher, the 16-year-old who collapsed and died of an undiagnosed heart condition after the Shamrock Half Marathon in March of 2014 in Virginia Beach. “The organizers of (Challenge Roth) became intrigued by Cameron’s story and legacy work to erase stigmas associated with anxiety, depression and mental illness, especially in teens,” Norman wrote in an email. “The organizers recognized how effective it is to use race platforms as a way to do good things in the world and specifically they were impressed with the work of the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation. This is a world championship venue with some very limited opportunities for charities to enter recreational teams of athletes. They invited the SpeakUp Race Team to join them this year as a

showcase charity and we couldn’t be more thrilled.” The SpeakUp team, which is the CKG Foundation’s race team, raises money and spreads awareness of teenage depression and anxiety. The goal of the Shamrock Half Marathon for Gallagher was one she had set to help cope with her own depression and anxiety. The Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation “spreads Cameron’s dream of being a positive force that raises awareness and understanding of teenage depression and anxiety,” according to the press release for the event. Norman is a veteran of endurance sports, having run three full marathons, some half marathons and had considered the idea of a triathlon prior to Gallagher’s death in 2014. She wrote that Gallagher’s passing “put everything into overdrive, just to survive.” “My sister and brother-in-law, our family, and our friends are giving purpose to this unspeakable pain by taking on the physical endurance challenges as a way to bring awareness to the mission of Cameron’s legacy,” Norman wrote. Despite being the tested endurance athlete she is, Norman was fully involved in intense training for the event. “Our race team has a coach and many opportunities to train at various

Post 201’s season ends in 15-2 loss By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

American Legion Post 201 shakes hands with Post 137 after its 15-2 loss.

It wasn’t the ending to the season that American Legion Post 201 had envisioned at the start of the season. On July 11 at Powhatan High School, Post 201’s season ended in a 15-2 loss to Post 137. “There’s a lot of really great baseball players on this team,” Post 201 coach Eric Mead said. “You know, we struggled with pitching, struggled giv-

ing up those big innings. But, outside of that, we played some good baseball games. We won some games against some good baseball teams. We probably finished up as a .500 team.” Post 137 jumped on Post 201 in the top of the first inning, hanging a sixspot on the scoreboard. Post 201 loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning, but Cameron Stanley grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning and Post 201’s most significant threat of offen-

sive of the game. The top of the third was another one of the signature “big innings” that Post 201 has allowed this season. Post 137 scored seven runs in that frame to put the score at 13-0 and made the deficit insurmountable. Logan Allen led the bottom of the fourth inning off with a solo home run and Korey Signh scored on an RBI single by Cabell Early for the only runs

Norman continued from >13 facilities all over Richmond,” she wrote. “That includes getting up four-to-five days a week between 4:30 and 5 a.m. to swim, bike or run. I have ridden my bike for over 100 miles three times and put many miles around Goochland roads to get ready for the marathon part.” The race will include a 2.4 mile swim, 112 miles on the bike, followed by a marathon, which is 26.2 miles. “We have done a number of shorter distance triathlons this year as training for this big one,” Norman wrote. “This is my first long distance triathlon.” The SpeakUp team had a goal to raise $75,000, which would enable the CKG Foundation to help teens with mental health programs in schools. Norman wrote that the team had exceeded that number. “The monies raised associated with this effort go 100percent toward programming to help kids in schools,” she

wrote. “Goochland schools are on a short list of new places we will bring some wonderfully vetted licensed programs. We have surpassed our goal of raising $75,000 associated with SpeakUp Germany.” Along with SpeakUp participating in the race, the CKG Foundation’s Executive Director Grace Gallagher, Cameron’s mom and Norman’s sister, as well as Cameron’s father David, will be participating in some talks prior to the race as well as after to spread the word about teenage mental health issues. “(Grace and David) are representing their daughter’s message and foundation during several pre-and-post-race events,” Norman wrote. “The number one priority is to introduce the mission and legacy and Cameron’s dream of helping those who suffer with anxiety and depression to SpeakUp and find the help they need in Europe and all over the world.” Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday. com

Goochland swim beats Antioch By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The Goochland YMCA swim team came away winners on July 6 at home against Antioch 747-542. Goochland had 48 swimmers in the water and 34 of those came away with personal best times at the meet. “We scored more points as a team,” head swim coach Helen Brown wrote in an email. “Every swimmer contributed to our overall team score.” Olivia Dillenger, Joseph Hardman, Abbey Pillion, Andrea, Anneliese and

Annika Rogerson as well as Sophia Summitt and David Tremain were all quad winners for Goochland on the night. Caleb Cardani, Ryan Johnson, Jessica and Mia Valdez, Nathan Whitcomb and Calla Wilson all were triple winners for Goochland. Prior to the July 19 meet, Brown wrote that 11 Goochland swimmers have qualified for Champs. The July 19 meet at home is the last meet of the season. Goochland will face off against The Federal Club. at 6 p.m.

Goochland Majors win District 4

Submitted Photo by Erin Long

The Goochland Majors All-Star team defeated Buckingham in the Dixie Youth District 4 Tournament 8-1. The team will go on to the state tournament on July 15 in Blackstone. Shown are, from left, top row, Coach Pete Henley, Chris White, Hunter Brooks, Mason Nuckols, Coach Haynie Hite, Aidan Allen, CJ Towles, Owen Long, Sam Gwaltney, AJ Condrey and Coach Frank Smith, and, bottom row, Noah Daniel, Greyson Ragone, Riley Hite, Luke Michaels and Luke Franko.

Legion continued from >13 of the game for Post 201. The game was the final one of the season for the team as Post 201 is ineligible for the upcoming American Legion District 11 tournament due to ineligible players on the roster. “We ended up with some administrative issues to where we had two ineligible baseball players,” Mead said. “We thought they were clear at the beginning of the season. We had an opportunity about midway through the season to let them

go and continue on to play in the district tournament. I gave that to the baseball team. I knew where I wanted to go with it and where my heart was with it. I wanted (the team) to make the decision. When I told them, I said ‘from this night on, we could move on and let these two players go and play in the district or not and they all stood up and said ‘if they go, we all go, we’re going to play as a team and as a family.’ “If I didn’t win another baseball game the rest of the season, I won right there. That’s what it’s all about. We took a

step back and re-evaluated and decided that we would continue to play if the other teams would play us, knowing we weren’t eligible for the district tournament. “I think it was the right decision. The kids are learning a lot and getting better every single day and we didn’t have to let anyone go.” Monday’s game was in stark contrast to the thrilling comefrom-behind win on July 9. Post 201 had climbed back from an early double-digit run deficit to lead by one in the top of the ninth inning.

Allen was on the mound in relief of another reliever, Joe Cutchins, and two runs scored to put Post 125F ahead by one. Cutchins had gotten on base thanks to a two-out walk, and that was the sign that Allen needed. “I told myself that if Joe gets on, we’re going to win,” he said. “I trusted the team. I went up there and executed.” Allen hit a two-run home run over the left field wall on the first pitch he saw to give Post 201 a walk-off 19-17 thrilling win over Post 125F.
