Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) recently announced the receipt of a $500,000 challenge grant from The Cabell Foundation. This grant will support the ongoing capital campaign to fund construction of a new building that will combine 11 critical assistance programs — including medical and dental clinics, food pantry, and Clothes Closet—in one location. GFCFS plans to build a 20,000 square foot building on the current site of the Family Services’ offices at 3001 River Road West, as well as convert the existing main building into emergency housing. This central site was chosen to make it easier for clients to access all services. The Cabell Foundation, founded in 1957 by Mr. Robert G. Cabell, III, and Mrs. Maude Morgan Cabell, was established as a private, non-operating foundation to support the permanent needs of charitable organizations throughout Virginia, with particular emphasis on agencies in the metro Richmond region. Since its inception, the Cabell Foundation has provided permanent gifts and challenge grants to a diverse mix of nonprofit institutions. Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services see Grant > 3

arah Morris and Jerry Slaughter Jr. were married at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, outside on Sarah’s parents’ property in Louisa. This picturesque location of green rolling hills was especially important to the bride because her grandmother, Mary Scott, and late maternal grandfather, Walter Scott, Sr., gifted the land to her parents over two decades ago, and her late father, Clyde W. Morris, Sr., had the vision to

build her family home on its current location. A deep appreciation for the land and its beauty was important to the groom’s family and his upbringing, so marrying outside at this location was an easy decision for the couple to make. The Goochland NAACP honored Hobbs last year during the group’s annual Freedom Fund banquet on Sept. 19. Calling Hobbs “the ultimate example of what a woman should be,”Goochland NAACP vice president Yvette McDermott-Thomas lauded the honoree for always displaying “such integrity, dignity and quiet wisdom.” “She is truly an inspiration,” McDermott-Thomas said. Catching up with: Sara Babb

Sara Babb serves as the Domestic and Sexual Violence Coordinator for Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services.

The Gazette recently chatted with Goochland Free Clinic and Family Service’s (GFCFS) Sara Babb, who came to the organization in February of 2015. Babb, who earned Bachelor’s in Social Work from Longwood University and a Master’s of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University, currently serves at GFCFS’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Coordinator.

Other days, I may be with a client in court to help them know what to expect when requesting a protective order. I also help clients in crisis find safe housing and make a safety plan of what they will work towards next. I also provide trainings or education to the community about our program s services and the dynamics of domestic and sexual violence.

to increase their feeling of safety and realize how strong they are… that’s not something I do for them, I’m just lucky enough to walk along with them through that journey.

Can you tell us what led you to GFCFS?

What do find most challenging about the work you do? There are many challenging things about the work I do. The lack of opportunities for jobs and affordable housing in Goochland is a huge challenge for the clients I work with. Another hard part of my job, probably the hardest, is seeing that people have been hurt in their relationships. I may be a little optimistic, but I hope that one day I will work myself out of a job and everyone will be happy and healthy in their relationships. For that to happen, everyone needs to realize what makes a relationship healthy and red flags for recognizing unhealthy behaviors.

I am most excited about adding sexual violence services to our program. Now, we will be able to serve not only victims/survivors of domestic violence but people who have experienced sexual violence as well. I am also excited about GFCFS s vision to provide all of our services under one roof.

I’ve been working in the field of domestic and sexual violence for about 5 years. I see a great need to have these services available to survivors in all localities, so when Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services began the Domestic Violence Program, I knew that I had an opportunity to fill a need for a community that did not have a dedicated domestic and sexual violence program.

Is there a typical day for you? If so, what does it look like?

Are there any planned projects or initiatives that you are particularly excited about?

What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t doing this? I think I would probably be spending all my time with animals… maybe a vet? I’m no good at chemistry, so it is probably a good thing that I am working with helping people find safety!

There really is not a typical day for me. Some days, I may What do you find see survivors of domestic or most rewarding? Let the sun shine in Just a matter of perspective By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When the long-ignored ficus in our living room began to shed a leaf here and there, I am sad to admit that no one in the family paid it much mind. Thanks to some furniture reshuffling it had recently been relegated to a different corner of the room, a spot that didn’t get as much light. But even when it began to lose a few more leaves, we didn’t exactly leap into action. So it went, until one afternoon we looked up and realized we had a near leaf-less tree sitting in the living room. My husband frowned. Something needed to be done. Since it was warm, he suggested, maybe we could try putting it outside. And, with that, the poor, neglected and clearly miserable little tree was carried out to the back deck and plopped in a spot that got several hours a day of sunlight. I’m sure what happened next is no mystery to anyone with even a basic knowledge of how plants—and most living things—work: a few weeks later, while taking out the trash, I noticed a smattering of delicate, vibrant green leaves beginning to unfurl from branches that had previously been bare and lifeless. Since then, I have joyfully checked the branches every day, never failing to find at least one

or two spots where new growth has begun. As with most situations like this, I suspected that there was a lesson to be learned from what happened with our little tree (aside from, of course, the obvious horticultural one). So it wasn’t entirely surprising when I found myself thinking about it again while watching parts of the Republican National Convention last week. Please don’t misunderstand me: I understand the point of events like these. I know they serve to fire up the faithful, and to underscore the critical importance of the task at hand. I know the language is supposed to incite those already loyal to the party to donate their time, money, and energy to making sure Good triumphs over Evil, and America isn’t overtaken by the ne’er-dowells on the other side. And yet… I will fully admit that I did not watch every minute of the convention. But much of what I did see appeared focused not on what the GOP was going to do to help lift America up, but more on how much the other side had served to butcher everything our country was founded on. Scott Baio aside (and the person who came up with that idea deserves a raise), much of it seemed based on strategy of fear-mongering, see Sunshine > 14

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Viewing this year’s election process, it suddenly dawned on me that personal political preferences are often motivated by perspective - that is, where you are and what issues affect your everyday life. For example, a healthy 30-yearold male might not care about universal health care or guaranteed medical coverage. That same issue may be at the top of the priority list belonging to a single mother with three dependent children. Her perspective is decidedly different from the aforementioned millennial because they approach issues from a

different position in life, and matters that directly affect her may have little influence on his life. I suppose the opposing priorities and perspective are what pervade the essence of politics, and supply the essential principles that ensure a democracy’s success. Our ability to find common ground is somewhat amazing, especially when one peers at a process that surely seems broken, or at least non-responsive to the nation it serves. This year, the mindless rhetoric is even more heated than usual, and most of it goes unnoticed by a majority of Americans. While candidates emerge from their Ivory Towers and descend to inform the rest of us

of our misery, most of us continue on our paths, giving little credence to what politicians scream. Most of the time, the messages are diametrically opposed - and I’m talking about from the same candidate. I hear the message that America is the greatest nation in the history of the world - but it could all disappear with this one election, another in a long line of end-all contests. Can all of these crisis situations all meet at the boiling point mysteriously every four years? Let them talk. Allow them to spend millions of influential dollars to influence the few who listen. To most of us, it’s just senseless noise. see Ridolphi > 14

Letters to the Editor An open letter to the brave men and women of law enforcement The following was written and submitted by Jacob Boykin, 13, shortly after the shooting deaths of three police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on July 17. To our men and women in blue: Thank you. Thank you for arriving to work every day and risking your lives for the men and women of your town or city, even if they couldn’t care less about you or your life, or your family. Thank you for having the courage and the audacity to wake up in the morning, put on that uniform and badge and kiss your spouse and children, not knowing if it’ll be the last time you’ll ever see them again. Thank you for all of the times you’ve showed up to work the next day, even after watching the antipolice protestors on your televisions the previous night, and for continuing to go out on the streets with you riot gear and protect those people, although they wouldn’t do the same for you.

Thank you for being the officer that chased that drunk driver for miles and miles, for being the officer that followed the suspicious man in my neighborhood who tried to break in my house, for being the officer that saw a man on the edge of a bridge thinking about suicide and pulled over to talk to him down and convince him to think twice, for being the officer that helped the little boy on the south side with his homework, and finally, for being the officer that works every day to serve my community. Lastly, thank you for doing everything you officers do for members of your community. I know that in today’s world officers are scrutinized for each and every action they do, and for that on the behalf of my community I’d like to apologize for that. Our police force are the very reason why civilized society hasn’t collapsed, why crime rates have gone down and not up, why less are hungry and more are full, why our streets haven’t gone to complete chaos. Those who have the courage to wear the uniform and the badge deserve our utmost respect, for it is

uncertain if their families will ever see them again. I just want you all to know that I truthfully and sincerely love and appreciate each and every one of you, and I cannot thank you enough for protecting me, my brothers and sisters and members of my community. I have, am, and will always keep each and every one of you in my prayers. God bless you all and your families, God bless our police force around the globe, and God bless the United States of America. Ponytails win state title, head to Dixie World Series By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Making history is a rare thing, but when it does, it makes any time that it happens that much more special. The Goochland Youth Athletic Association (GYAA) Ponytails softball team won the Dixie State Championship for the first time last week. “So many folks realize that this has never happened for Goochland softball,” coach Jeff Michaels said. “It’s been huge for softball. Never has a softball team done that. It’s a testa-

ment to the Goochland Youth Athletic Association as well as the girls in helping softball over the past several years. We’ve had teams that got close to winning the state title but never gotten over the hump.” Goochland won the semifinal game 12-4 against the All-Stars from Radford, a team that had defeated Goochland earlier in the tournament by one run. Then, in the final, Goochland rolled on Emporia-Greenville 17-4 to win the state title game. The strength of the Goochland team throughout the tournament was

its pitching and its defense, according to Michaels. Jasmine Price pitched a complete game in the semifinal, while the final was pitched by Taylor Michaels. Alyssa Barger also pitched in four games in the tournament, only walking three batters total. “The team did great,” he said. “They persevered through multiple teams that tried to battle. In the end, our pitching and hitting came through when we needed it. We had two pitchers who pitched the last day and were tremendous. With being a state final game, it was good to see the girls come

together.” Offensively, Price led the team with 10 hits throughout the duration of the tournament. Kiersten Green had five extra base hits and Michaels hit a bases-loaded double in the semifinal against Radford, which put Goochland ahead for good. Keeley Shoemaker came back from a knee injury to make noise at the plate as well. In six games, Goochland outscored its opponents 59-15. After winning the title, Goochland went to fundraising to help with the cost of the trip to the site of the Dixie World Series in Alexandria, La.

The team did fundraisers at the Kroger in Short Pump as well as the 250 Sports Grill, just to name a few. Michaels said the team practiced Tuesday and Wednesday before leaving this morning for the trip to Louisiana. He said that they’re going to stop in Alabama and stay the night before continuing the trip on Friday and attending the banquet for all the teams. That travel will be something new for most of the members of the Goochland team. “It’s definitely something new

Geoff McDonald (left) and Brian Derby (right) work with two offensively lineman during the Derby Camp at Benedictine last week.

Derby Camp a success for linemen There’s an old adage in football that the games are won and lost in the trenches. At Benedictine on July 21, those trenches were getting a workout from some bright minds when it comes to playing the offensive and defensive line. The Brian Derby Offensive Lineman Camp, known as Derby Camp, was in full swing from July 19 through July 22 at Benedictine. Injury attorney Geoff McDonald was a roommate of Derby at the University of Hawaii. McDonald and Derby both played offensive line prior

to McDonald’s transfer to the University of Virginia and a switch to defensive line. The transfer didn’t end the friendship between the two lineman and that friendship is what brought the camp to Richmond four years ago. “We decided we were going to start one because they had seven-on-seven camps, quarterback camps, kicking camps, linebacker camps,” McDonald said. “We couldn’t find an offensive lineman camp to send our players to. So, we decided to start our own. When we started it, we brought it a guy who has been doing it for 20 years in Hawaii and that was Brian Derby.”

Derby does the Derby Camps all over the country, but his main one is based in Hawaii. The camps in the summer, such as the one at Benedictine, are microcosms of the camp in Hawaii. “Brian is the best at what he does,” McDonald said. “In Hawaii, it’s like a seven-monthlong camp. They meet every Saturday, it’s a progressive camp and they’re going all the time. What it does for us is, it helps with our technique. Football has changed a lot in the last 20 years. A lot of us coaches are also parents and we want these kids to be safe.” Safety on the football field is one of the biggest goals of

the camp. “We don’t want these kids getting concussions and microconcussions,” he said. “We want them to have good technique. Instead of using the head as a battering ram, we’re teaching proper hand placement and foot placement. There’s no reason for anyone out here to get hurt playing offensive line if they’re using the correct technique.” The camp featured athletes from ages eight to 18 and from a myriad of different middle schools, such as Short Pump and Chickahominy to high school such as Atlee, Deep Run, Mills Godwin, Benedictine and Glen Allen, just to name a few.

there.” In order to make it through the entire tournament, the Goochland Ponytails will have to get through a gauntlet of six or seven games. “You’re going to need plenty of pitching,” Michaels said.

“We’ll need to manage our pitching and our hitting is going to have to stay as hot as it’s been. We’re going to win the close ball games and I’m expecting them to be close.” However, regardless of the outcome, Michaels said that this

team has been a memorable one and said that the Goochland community has rallied around the team. “The entire year has been a success,” he said. “These last few days leading into the World Series has shown how great

the community is and it’s been great to see the support. It’s been great for our players and our community in general.” Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday. com or on Twitter at @BillyFellin.

Softball continued from >10 for them,” Michaels said. “Recreation softball is not travel softball. Most of these girls are not used to traveling to play so there’s a lot of excitement. But,

they’re not just happy to go, but they have their eyes set on the higher prize. They want to go and do something that definitely no Goochland team has ever done. We know there’s going to be good teams there and we feel our hitting and pitching will be

Sunshine continued from >6 chest-beating, and providing masses of hardened rage-aholics with just enough of a fix to keep them coming back for more night after night. Trump’s speech, sadly, was the pièce de résistance, the caustic cherry on the doomsday sundae. Again, I ask that you take this not as a shot at the GOP. It isn’t. The Dems have their turn in the spotlight this week, and I’m sure there will be plenty to loathe from that

gathering as well. I also realize that we do have some very real problems in this country that need to be addressed. All I would humbly suggest, as we work to fix those problems, is that perhaps we consider a bit more sunlight as part of the cure. Put down the pitchforks, tuck away the battery acid, and see what a little positivity can do. Not a lot—just a few hours a day. I think you would be amazed at just how much we all would grow.
