For some students, language can be the first hurdle

Teacher, staff involvement help ensure Goochland’s non-English speaking students don’t fall behind By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Attending a new school can be daunting for any student. But for those whose primary language isn’t English, the path to academic success can be uniquely challenging. According to Jennifer Waggener, Goochland County Schools’ Director of Exceptional Education, the school district currently provides services to around 50 students through its English Language Learners (ELL) program, with about 47 percent attending Randolph Elementary in the county’s eastern end. As one would imagine, helping a student who speaks little to no English adjust to life in an American school takes skill, patience, and a network of teachers and school personnel working together to ensure that no child falls through the cracks academically. As Waggener explained, students in need of ELL services are typically identified during see ELL program > 3

Martin looks to the future after television journey Despite falling short in America’s Got Talent bid, area native knows she’s made an impact By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Ronee Martin may have ended her run on the television show America’s Got Talent, but the Goochland High School graduate insists this is just the start of a brand new Martin chapter in her life. Martin, 62, who was eliminated from the show during the episode

that aired on Aug. 23, said she has been receiving a flood of emails, tweets and posts to her Facebook page, all from new fans expressing shock and sadness that she will no longer be appearing on the program. “So many people have been reaching out,” she said from her home in Los Angeles, California, including many older people who have called Martin an inspiration. see Martin > 3

ELL program continued from >1 registration for school. The most obvious example would be if a student lives in a home where English is not spoken at all, but students can also be “flagged” for help if one parent lists a primary language other than English. Serving as a lifeline for those students who are placed in the ELL program are teachers like Renae Townsend, one of three members of the county’s ELL staff. Her goal, she said, is to help students reach a point where they can navigate their new environment on their own. She and other ELL teachers

Though acting Goochland Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Caudill’s name is expected to be the only name on the ballot this November — he is running unopposed and the

deadline to get on the ballot has passed — the candidate told a group gathered for a Goochland Tea party meeting last Thursday that he is still hoping to get their vote. Caudill, the county’s former Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney, took over the lead

role in the office last June after then Commonwealth’s Attorney Claiborne Stokes was named a District Court Judge. Born in Christiansburg, Caudill graduated from Douglas Freeman and became a Henrico County police offi-

cer in 1979. He stayed on the job until 1986, when he went to the University of Richmond to get his law degree. The Sandy Hook resident replaced Nancy Oglesby in 2012 after she moved to the Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office.

realize that they could reach for their dreams regardless of their age. A singer all of her life, Martin said she came close to getting her break in the music business several times, but things never seemed to work out quite right. Now however, with her

newfound fan base, Martin has her eyes focused on the future. “I knew I was going into retirement, so I thought this would be a way for me to go and do what I always wanted to do, which was sing,” she said. And while Martin said she does sometimes worry that she

let down the millions of people who were pulling for her, she has only positive things to say about the experience. “It was amazing,” she said, explaining that she’d like to parlay her time on the show into work as a motivational speaker or singer — or a combination of the two. “What I

want to do now is to motivate other people and to help them find their own happiness and strength.”

like to say their job is to create a “scaffolding” that students can use as they build their language skills. To Goochland County school superintendent Jeremy Raley, meeting the needs of those in the ELL program is part and parcel of the division’s goal to make sure all students have the tools they need to succeed. “Our school division is committed to meeting the individual academic needs of every learner,” Raley said. “It is our goal for every student to achieve a minimum of one year of academic growth during the course of a school year and we are optimistic that we can maximize the potential of every child who is enrolled in

the Goochland County Public Schools.” Unlike school districts in and around major metropolitan areas, whose ELL programs assist students from numerous cultural backgrounds, the vast majority of Goochland’s ELL students come from homes where Spanish is the primary language. Townsend, who is fluent in Spanish, said that knowing the language can help when communicating with students’ families, though she noted that the success of any ELL program has less to do with a teacher being able to communicate in a student’s native tongue than with that teacher’s dedication to helping the student thrive.

Waggener pointed out that the schools’ staff, from the teachers to the custodians, are all critical components of the program. If any one of them notices a student struggling, she said, they are quick to act on the student’s behalf. “The support is here,” Waggener said. “The teachers and the staff really care about these kids.” Townsend said it has been particularly gratifying to watch the students as they make progress, gradually moving toward being able to understand and speak English fluently. It isn’t always easy, she said, “but getting to see those ‘a-ha’ moments when they happen — that’s incredible.”

Brat visits with local Tea Party group By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Congressman Dave Brat (R-7th) spoke to members of the Goochland Tea Party during a Town Hall meeting at Life Assembly Church on Aug. 25, answering questions about the work he’s been doing and sharing his thoughts on the current political climate in Washington. Brat, whose victory over incumbent Eric Cantor in 2014 is considered one of the biggest political upsets in congressional history, has credited the Goochland Tea Party with helping secure his win. After the event, Brat met with Tea Party members and signed copies of his new book, “American Underdog.” The following are several excerpts from the remarks he delivered during the meeting:

On the impact of the Clinton email scandal and “Pay for Play”:

“The computer piece is a little boring, it’s totally illegal, [Hillary Clinton] should be in jail for that piece, but once it comes out where you show the pay for play and the change in foreign policy…over 50 percent of the donors to the foundation got in the state department…and once you show some turnaround in foreign policy — once that e-mail comes out…then I think you’re going to have a September surpriseslash-tsunami coming.”

On what the GOP is getting wrong “Our side is losing to the Democrats on messaging. Period. We’re not even close — we’re not even in the ballpark. What are the Republican talking points on war? Can anybody tell me?... You don’t know. Alright, so there’s the messaging, and here’s the irony of ironies — where we’re really losing — they outflank us and beat us by using one word: compassion. [The message is that] the Democrats are compassionate and loving...and you’re not — you’re a bunch of

meanies. You don’t love people, you’re bigoted and all of this kind of thing, right? So we’re losing that one.”

On what he has learned during his time in Washington so far: “Everyone says ‘Dave, what’s the new thing you’ve learned by going up there’—and everyone says ‘Is it like [the television show] House of Cards?’…no, everyone has been very gracious, very nice, the senior people are nice, the Democrats, we get along with them personally… I was expecting the economic corruption, domestically in the budget deals and all that—but not what I’ve learned about the foreign policy corruption. I thought for sure no one would compromise that, right? When it comes to just foreign policy decisions in the best interest of the United States of America — that you would sacrifice that for some business deal, for billions and billions and billions of dollars. And it turns out that’s what’s going on at the highest levels.”

Making a difference Hook, line and thinker: Life By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As Goochland County Public Schools teachers settle in for the third week of this new school year, they are no doubt well on their way to figuring out how to help their students get the most out of each and every lesson. And for all of the teachers wondering if the material they teach makes an impact on students’ lives, I would submit the following: Years ago, when I was in the third grade in a small Catholic school in Richmond, I had a wonderful music teacher. * This was long before there was so much music created specifically for young children — no Kidz Bop or Okee Dokee Brothers, or any of that. If you were a kid, you listened to whatever your parents listened to on the radio, or whatever records (yes, records), they played at home. For many of us, music was simply the background noise in the room or the sounds that filled the church on Sunday. In this teacher’s class, however, we were encouraged to think differently, to listen to and talk about music in a way that was part science, part art. In addition to the lessons one might expect (reading music, understanding rhythm and tempo), we also listened to songs and artists from a wide spectrum of musical styles. We heard voices that sounded strange and new, and puzzled over lyrics that didn’t at the time seem to make much sense. I also, very clearly,

remember beginning to understand that music was a way for people to share things — it was a way of telling stories. Our teacher didn’t attempt to explain the songs’ meaning. She just wanted us to listen. It was OK if we didn’t like it — that wasn’t the point. Today I am a person who appreciates just about every style of music, and I’m not afraid to give a listen to something even if I don’t expect to like it. I know I can trace this back to those days in elementary school, and a teacher who encouraged us to listen with an open mind. As for that wonderful teacher, some of our readers may know her well — her name is Kim Watts, and she now teaches at Goochland Elementary School. As we continue to forge ahead into this school year, I would like to wish all of Goochland’s teachers much success and thank them for all they do for Goochland’s students. Someday, I know those students will thank them too. *A quick word about music teachers: I have come to believe that the good Lord instilled in them just a bit more patience than he gave the rest of us. And, even with that, there are some who simply can’t tolerate the strain. I once saw a music teacher resign after the first week, completely undone by the monumental task of trying to keep a class full of rambunctious elementary school students seated, quiet, and away from the upright piano that seemed to call out like a siren to every kid who’d never played one before.

It was a family- the lake. It was a time of day and oriented camping park comprised a peace and quiet whose memory of most regulars, many of them still provide a sense of tranquility spending generations on the lake. decades later. with years of experience and knowledge of the lake that allowed him to find the big “northerns” that hid in the weeds in special spots. While I filled the chain hanging over the edge of the boat with brim, he routinely reeled in large pike. “Look at that, my friend,” he would softly exclaim as he lifted the menacing looking fish into the boat. It wasn’t until years later that I realized I gained little knowledge about fishing on those afternoon escapades, but I learned a lot about courage and determination from a man whose lessons serve me well to this day. It was an unlikely pairing: a long-haired liberal college student and a no nonsense farmer from Wisconsin. But the hours spent on that lake prove that the most unlikely of possible outcomes are usually the ones that happen the most often. I never thought of Art as being disabled. I suppose that’s the most appropriate tribute to a man who lived through a life of obstacles, and didn’t mind smiling along the way. On that path, he touched hundreds of lives and influenced the way many of them approached a lifetime of challenges. As I struggle with and for a family member who is facing insurmountable odds and faces a life without the use of his legs, Art’s legacy means even more and I often speak of him when my son is in need of inspiration. And fishing. Well, I haven’t done much of it since those summers in Wisconsin and I rarely think of it ... except for those special moments when my mind wanders back to a small boat sitting on Loon Lake and the simple sound of ripples quietly splashing against the shore — and a man who taught me what I know about fishing, but much more about something that is most important: life.

Goochland wing back Cordell Mattox (23) eludes the tackle of Essex defensive back Issiah Taylor in second half action. Mattox intercepted a pass late in the fourth quarter and returned it 95 yards for a Goochland score making the final 14-0.

Two interceptions boost Goochland over Essex in opener By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

With temperatures in the mid90s, the start of last week’s season opener at Goochland was delayed 30 minutes to allow the heat index to drop. Once the teams did take the field, the high humidity coupled with

opening night jitters produced a low scoring defensive struggle with a stubborn Essex team. “It was a brutally hot night out there and that took a toll on both teams,” said Goochland coach Joe Fowler. But, two defensive plays pushed Goochland over Essex 14-0. For 40 minutes the teams traded

punches but produced no points until early in the fourth quarter when Essex moved the ball to the Bulldogs’ 23yard line. Bulldog linebacker John King picked a KJ Dameron pass and sprinted to the end zone, giving Goochland its first lead of the night 7-0. Essex running back Tim Johnson provided some late game drama when

he returned a punt 45 yards to set the Trojans up on the Bulldog 15 yard line with a chance to tie the game. Goochland’s defense brought its own brand of heat on the next two plays, stuffing Trojan runners for no gain resulting in a third and ten situation. “Our defense played phenomenal. Our defensive line was aggressive and

played with great technique and our linebackers and defensive backs were always in the right spot to make a play,” Fowler said. On third down, a deflected Dameron pass doomed the Trojans’ last chance, and Cordell Mattox picked the errant pass and raced 98

Roundup: Golf grabs a quad-meet win By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Goochland’s golf team grabbed a win on Aug. 24 in a quad-match win at The Hollows. The Bulldogs shot 178, three strokes better than Central Lunenburg. Cumberland was third with a 203 and Mathews was fourth with a 211. Peyton Butts was the low score for the Bulldogs with a 5-over 40. On Aug. 25, the Bulldogs were third with a 190 in a tri-

Bulldogs continued from >12 yards for Goochland’s second pick-six of the night. The 14-0 win ends the series with Essex with the Bulldogs holding a 4-2 edge over last year’s conference semi finalists. Goochland’s offense did not produce points and lacked the explosiveness of past squads. That didn’t surprise Fowler. “Offensively we haven’t struggled like that in a long time. But Essex’s defense had a lot to do with that,” the coach said. “They were huge across the front and we simply couldn’t match up with their size. But we need to get better and get better fast,” he said. The offense has its strengths and Fowler said that will the focus of the strategy. “We are a different squad then we have been the past few years and we are going to have to play a different style of football,” he said. “We have to focus on the things that we can do well and eliminate the things where we don’t excel.”

match with Randolph-Henry (148) and Nottoway (187).

YMCA FALL SWIM TEAM STARTING SOON The Goochland YMCA Manta Rays fall swim team season is right around the corner. The first practice for the team is Sept. 6 and the first team meeting is Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. Swimmers interested in joining the swim team at the Goochland YMCA can call 804-556-9887. Essex did present a matchup problem on both sides of the ball regarding line size. The Trojans represented one of the biggest lines the Bulldogs will face this year. Problem is an equally large opponent comes to town this week in the form of Fork Union. “FUMA will be a huge test for us again. It will be four weeks in a row where we are facing a team that is physically bigger and stronger that we are,” Fowler said. “They are just as big as Essex. Our guys might be undersized, but they are a tight knit group who will stick together for four quarters.” The coach also noticed something that some might call an intangible on that hot, sweltering field last week. “We were so proud of the way our kids battled through the adversity of the elements and kept answering the bell,” he said. “There were a lot of times last night when they could have folded and considering the heat and humidity, no one would have blamed them. But, they stayed tough.”

Defending state champs ready for ’16 By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Repeating as champions is hard enough. When you lose some key players due to graduation, it gets that much harder. That is the situation that coach Jennifer Erixon and her Goochland Bulldogs face coming into the 2016 season, but it’s a challenge that they’re ready to take head on. “We have a lot of talent,” Erixon said. “We just have to work on filling the holes.” Madelyn Ott, Maddie Parker and Josie Summitt are three of the big gaps in the lineup that will need to be replaced this season for the Bulldogs. Those three were huge contributors during last season’s undefeated run to the

Group 2A state championship. But, that’s not to say that Goochland is missing players that knows what it takes to go all the way. Casey Spencer and Maddie Goff are two players that were key contributors in the state final that are back at it once again for Goochland this season. Spencer and Goff combined for 40 digs in the win over Marion, and will be a big part of bringing experience and leadership to some of the newer players. “We just need to get some more touches on the ball, more experience and more playing time,” Erixon said. “But, these girls want to learn and want to play. They love the game. I’m excited about this season.” Faith Gerdes along with Goff are stepping up into the

outside hitter roles this season. Emma Holcomb will take over the middle hitter spot. Freshman Trinity Wonderling will move into the setter role. “I tell them where they need to be and they’re like ‘ok’ and ‘I can do that’,” Erixon said. “Their attitude is absolutely amazing. We have some options for sure.” Goochland got a taste of play on Aug. 27 during a jamboree and faced teams such as Midlothian, Atlee, Rappahannock and Trinity Episcopal. Erixon said that the team surprised her with how well they played. “They played very, very well,” she said. “They didn’t let mental mistakes get to them. We played really well against

Atlee and were really scrappy. Atlee has some big girls and some big hitters and my girls were just fearless. They fought hard.” Coming off a state title win and the expectations are certainly higher in Goochland than at the start of any previous season. Should the Bulldogs repeat as state champions, they would be following in Gate City’s footsteps, as they won the first two Group 2A state titles in 2013 and 2014. “I don’t think (a second state title) is out of sight,” Erixon said. “If things start clicking, then we have a chance at it this year. If things don’t start clicking, it might be another year. It’s in the cards, but I need to find the right rotation and chemistry. I don’t think it’s off the table, we’re very talented.”
