Church creates touching tribute to 9/11 victims

In honor of the thousands who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, members of Gum Springs United Methodist Church spent the last several months carefully folding over 3,000 white paper doves. Once completed, the doves were individually hung from the ceiling of the church. The effect, said Pastor Lauren Lobenhofer, “was breathtaking.” For the full story behind the project, see page 10.

Historical Society unveils renovated Old Stone Jail By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Two years after a local group set out to renovate a storied county landmark, fans of local history gathered last Sunday to celebrate the opening

of the newly restored Old Stone Jail. “What an emotional day,” said Goochland Historical Society’s executive Director Phyllis Silber, noting that the initial planning for the project had actually started as early as 2006. “Finally, here we are, and what

a journey it has been.” The ribbon-cutting marks the completion of Phase I of the ongoing Courthouse Green Restoration Project, an effort that will ultimately include a new county Visitor’s Center and an historic interpretive

trail around the perimeter of the Courthouse Green. According to Wayne Dementi, the chair of the project, the restoration work is aimed at capitalizing see Jail renovation > 3

Six weeks after officially stepping into the role of Goochland County Administrator, John Budesky says he’s happy to have landed here. And while he admits he’s still got plenty to learn, Budesky says he wants residents to know his door is always open. In keeping with that philosophy, Budesky seems intent on avoiding the Budesky kind of removed, govern-from-on-high management style that can plague some larger localities. More than anything, “we want individuals to be part of the process when it comes to their government,” said Budesky, whose most recent role before coming to Goochland was as a deputy county administrator in see Budesky > 4

Jail renovation continued from >1 on what has been described by architectural historian Gibson Worsham — himself a key player in the renovation — as “the best preserved public Courthouse Square in Virginia, and the most architecturally perfect Jeffersonian courthouse in existence today.” Thanks to the efforts of the Historical Society and a number of generous supporters, the jail has been restored to depict three eras of prison life over its nearly two centuries of existence. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was followed by tours of the jail, attendees were treated to a brief history lesson detailing the lives of John Pierce and Millie Pierce. John Pierce, listed as a slave in the 1810 census, also served as the county’s official jailer from 1811 to 1827. His wife Millie, a free woman, was listed as the caretaker of the Courthouse. Making the presentation even more special was

an appearance by Chief Cornerstone Baptist Church’s Rev. Adlai Allen, playing the role of Pierce, and Allen’s wife Diane, who was cast as Millie. To Rev. Allen, whose sister submitted his name for the job, learning about Pierce’s life offered a fascinating look at a little-known part of Goochland’s history. Though he admits he was initially hesitant to play the role of Pierce, Allen said the more he researched the more excited he became. An added twist? According to historical records, before being awarded his freedom, Pierce had been owned as a slave by a man named Thomas Woodson. Diane Allen’s maiden name was Woodson, her husband explained, and they have reason to believe that Thomas Woodson is a distant relative of theirs. As those attending the ribbon-cutting milled around the shaded grounds of the Courthouse, history did seem to be all around. For Goochland County High School government

Now, a quarter century later, the production has become known as Field Day of the Past and annually brings crowds of over 40,000 to its dedicated grounds just off Ashland Road. Budesky insists he has never thought of his role as that of replacing Dickson, someone he describes as both a friend and respected colleague. When it comes to running the county, “We really value the input of residents,” Budesky said. “The county employees work for the board, but at the end of the day, we all work for the residents.”

The more things change... By Roslyn Ryan Editor

You know that question people sometimes pose, the one where they ask you to choose someone — anyone, living or dead — who you would like to have lunch with? For many years, my answer has been my grandfather. Though he died in 1999, just a few days shy of the dawning of the new millennium, one of my greatest wishes since has been to sit down and have one more great conversation with him. Sadly, I’m wondering these days if it would be a good idea. You see, my grandfather was a brilliant and accomplished man, an engineer who attended Princeton and Cornell, graduated at the top of his class and bravely served his country in World War II. He also was tremendously curious about the world around him. I just know, after we caught up on the family news — marriages, babies, jobs, etc. — he’d ask me about current events. And then it would get weird. First, I’d attempt a diversion — maybe circle back around to that promotion my sister just got. “That’s great,” he’d say, “but you told me that already. What’s happening in politics? Isn’t this an election year?” “Umm, yes …” I’d say. “Who’s running?” “Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.”

“No, really — who’s running?” I can only imagine it devolving from there, my grandfather grappling with a sense of bewilderment that would grow more enveloping with each new inquiry. I’d try to point out the previously unfathomable advances in science and engineering. I’d pull out a phone just a little bigger than a credit card, and wow him with the news about self-driving cars. I think it might go well for a few minutes. But then he might ask me about the Olympics, and I d have to tell him that the biggest story out of the recent games was a swimmer who drank too much and created an international incident in a gas station bathroom. I’d want to avoid talking about certain other things, like Hillary’s emails or Trump’s “bromance” with Vladimir Putin (I’d probably gloss over the whole concept of bromances altogether, just for expediency’s sake). For that matter, I also would skip the Presidential Election of 2000 (hanging chads, anyone?), legalized marijuana, internet trolls, the Red Sox winning the World Series (three times), and the financial collapse of 2008. If he asked me about New York, where he was born and spent just about all of his life, I’d have to explain September 11, 2001. And I know it would break his heart. But we would not talk about transgender bathroom hystesee Change > 7

Celebrating a bumper crop Goochland resident Mason Cox spent the summer helping his father Linny in his family’s watermelon patch. Here, he happily inspects their haul, which weighed in at 192.8 pounds. Contributed photo

Letter to the Editor (Editor’s note: Recently, through the newspaper’s Facebook page, we asked Goochland residents to share their memories from Sept. 11, 2001. We’d like to thank Robin Liesfeld, who sent us the following:)

Local teachers faced difficult questions after Sept. 11 terror attacks Dear Editor, Just like the reflection published in last week’s Gazette, I too, was at school — a middle school in Chesterfield County, teaching 7th grade Social Studies. Although the attack happened not long after the school day began, I was not aware of many details until lunch time (busy teaching schedule - no break!) We (teachers) were directed not to share details of the attacks with our students. Later that day, I spent my planning time glued to a TV in one of the back rooms of the library. I, along with other teachers, sat in silence and disbelief as we watched the images over and over again. It

was a good thing that year that my planning time was at the end of the day. I don’t think I could have been an effective teacher that afternoon. After a brief faculty meeting to plan strategy for the next day, I was eager to pick up my son from a local day care (we lived then and still do in the Centerville area). I was not the only parent anxious to pick their child and hug them tightly. For me, Sept. 12 was just as difficult. I had no idea what questions my first period class would ask, or what they would want to talk about. Our administration had encouraged us to let students in our first period class speak what was on their mind and ask questions, then get back to that regular routine as soon as possible. I was as nervous then as I had ever been in front of a group of students. This class was a really sweet, gentle group of students. (Oh, there were a few mischief makers in there to keep things balanced, but overall, a really nice class!). The questions came quickly: “Are we at war?” “Can something like this

happen in Richmond?” “Are we safe here at school?” “Which nations have nuclear weapons?” Students eagerly volunteered answers and opinions and it was a great classroom discussion. One of our Assistant Principals (also a Goochland resident) was in my classroom visiting, which was reassuring to both me and my students. His presence and contributions to a class discussion were greatly appreciated by all of us. Later that week, our morning announcements included a moment of silence, and the playing of several songs, including Lee Greenwood’s “Proud to be an American.” I unashamedly wept openly in front of my students during that song. I was not the only one in the class who shed tears. Folks who are or have been in education will understand about building a bond with a particular group of students. Our bond was forged and cemented that tragic week of American History. Robin B. Liesfeld Goochland

Protests are starting a conversation, but about what? I’m not crazy about any type of public expression that makes other people uncomfortable or somehow pressures one to take part in activities that might offend or otherwise tweak their sense of right and wrong. And while I certainly understand the opposing view, I believe a nation that rules without religious or political affiliation achieves the best results for the governed. I think that’s the way our founding fathers planned it as they purposely avoided importing problems that plagued the nations from which they came. Throughout my life, I’ve placed importance on the

Change continued from >6 ria, or Anthony Weiner. And if Brown University’s recent policy change on feminine hygiene products came up I would “accidently” knock over my water glass and excuse myself. Oddly, the thing my grandfather might not be surprised by would be the recent decision of pro football player Colin Kaepernick to kneel during the National Anthem. Athletes using their platform to make social or political statements is not new, after all, and while I suspect my grandfather would

American flag or other symbols that represent our nation, but placed more emphasis on the beliefs and values of the people who live in this great country. Put simply, I believe being a good American is more important that looking like one. My lack of enthusiasm for the normal patriotic triggers has sometimes been confused with a lack of respect or, even worse, a dislike for our country. To the contrary, I see the nation as an experiment in democracy that constantly needs vigilance. In my mind, and too often, expressions of patriotism or respect for the flag can be misinterpreted as loyalty to policies and leaders we don’t endorse. Or, in the case of San

Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a statement of protest against policies he views as unjust are worth his attention from an elevated podium. His public expression of displeasure with current policies he deems discriminatory has been equated to nonpatriotism, some even going so far as to call his actions treasonous. The quarterback’s concerns are justified, and his protest was designed to open a conversation that is long overdue. The idea that questioning police actions equates to a lack of patriotism is an absurd oversimplification of a complicated problem. And whether you believe recent incidents regarding minorities and police in deadly confrontations indi-

call Kaepernick a knucklehead (or worse) for disrespecting the flag, he also would agree that it was his right to do it. I like to think he also might remind me — having lived through some pretty turbulent times himself — that so much of what we think of as novel has already been seen many, many times before, just with slightly different lead characters. Politicians have always been crooked. People have always pushed boundaries. “Nihil sub sole novum,” he might say with a glint in his eye. “There is nothing new under the sun.” That, I think, despite every-

thing, is the reason I still want more than anything to have lunch with my grandfather, a man whose wisdom wasn’t gleaned from a website, who’d persevered through hard times and never lost his curiosity about the world around him. I know I won’t ever get that chance. But it makes me happy to think of it just the same.

cates a problem, most would agree having the conversation is important. After the horrendous events of September 11, 2001, our nation enjoyed an almost unanimous sense of national pride and patriotism. The horror of foreign attack and the fear of anonymous terrorist actions united a nation. Those who urged caution were quick-

ly shouted down and labeled as non-patriots, or even worse. That spirit of unity served a nation well as we recovered in the months following the disasters. When President Bush elected to take our nation to war against the perpetrators, few stood up and questioned his intelligence or motivation. As it turned out, maybe someone should have.

So, I don’t question Kaepernick’s right to express his opinion in an effort to begin the conversation. Problem is, it’s not clear what subject matter is being discussed as a result of Kaepernick’s actions. It seems like the conversation he intended to trigger has become more of a headsee Protest > 8

Examining the budget shortfall By Del. Lee Ware R-65th Contributing Columnist

T H E WA L L S A R E

TALKING. YOUR HOME IS

SET TLING.

Our state government faces a $1.5 billion shortfall in the budget for the next two years precisely because our private economy in the Commonwealth — as a large majority of us as individuals or as families readily know — is sluggish, at best. Consequently, the legislature and the Governor are taking the steps n e ce s s a r y to match state spending with state revenues well in advance Ware of the 2017 General Assembly which convenes in mid-January. This is a very sad business, not least because the shortfall means that there will be no pay raises come December for state employees, public school teachers, sheriff’s deputies, college faculty, and other state-supported local employees. Raises have been minimal at best during the “Great Recession” stretching to 2009, and many state employees are earning a quarter to a third less than their counterparts in the private sector. But the private sector is suffering, too. The inescapable fact is that our private economy is replacing high-paying full-time jobs with lower-paying parttime jobs. As families and individuals work less — and earn less — the revenues from taxes on income and sales decline, of course. As chairman of the House of

Protest continued from >7 line news item about spoiled NFL players, or other athletes who may or may not choose

Delegates’ Finance Committee I am privileged — and challenged — to represent our communities in the counsels at which the decisions are being made to address the budget shortfall. Here are the key facts with which we are grappling: For the fiscal year of 20162017 estimated revenues will decline $850 million; During 2017-2018 estimated revenues will decline $650 million; Since April 2016 the private sector has shed 4,000 jobs in Virginia; Average weekly wages for Virginian workers are down by more than 1 percent statewide and by nearly 2 percent in northern Virginia; Manufacturing, professions, and business are losing jobs; There are 20,000 more involuntary part-time workers this year than last, and the average number of hours worked per week is declining. So, though the unemployment rate statewide is only 3.7 percent, the number of fulltime jobs is declining. Thankfully, our Virginia Constitution requires us to balance our state budget. The legislature is authorized, by law, to draw upon the state’s “Rainy Day Fund,” and we will do so, to the tune of about $630 million, over the next two years. The remainder of the shortfall will have to be covered by cuts in spending—including, as noted, raises for state employees, teachers, deputies, and others. Under law, the Governor

is authorized to act to ensure that state agencies within his Administration lower spending in accord with the lowered revenue projections. The revenue shortfall was reviewed in detail during a recent meeting of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates (GACRE), a panel that includes senior legislators and business, professional, and labor groups’ representatives. Over the next several weeks several legislative panels will act on the GACRE reports. For example, the legislature’s Joint Subcommittee on Tax Preferences, which I chair, is looking at possible reforms to a wide array of tax-credit programs. GACRE will meet again in October and in November. Then, in mid-December, the Governor and legislative money committees, including the House Finance Committee, will meet to prepare the final proposals for us to consider during General Assembly come January. Here are some key points that are of importance for all taxpayers, and of course also for all of us who understand that the state is an agent of the people of Virginia for the benefit of the common good — the Commonwealth: The state’s budget is right at $100 billion, but the General Fund (GF) portion of that figure is lower, at $40.6 billion. (The Non-General Fund portion of the total budget includes appropriations mandated by law — including, especially, federsee Budget shortfall > 16

And what happened to that important conversation so clearly identified as motivation for the quarterback’s actions? Unfortunately, it got lost in the hype.

Church’s paper doves honor victims of 9/11 By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Last April, when Rev. Lauren Lobenhofer was looking for a way to help the congregation of Gum Spring United Methodist Church commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, she knew she wanted to do something both meaningful and inspiring. So, when she came across the idea of displaying thousands of handmade white paper cranes in the church, one for every life lost in the attacks, she knew it was a perfect fit. “I thought it looked like an incredible idea,” Lobenhofer said. “We could commemorate Contributed photo this horrible tragedy, but there Members of Gum Spring United Methodist Church work to hang thousands of handmade paper doves in the church sanctuary as would also be this amazing a tribute to those lost in the Sept.. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. promise of resurrection.” While the idea was wellreceived by the congregation, getting the mission accomplished took plenty of hard work—and handwork. “It was a huge community effort with everyone working together to make this happen,” Lobenhofer said, and that effort included church members of all ages. “I      think we had half of the congregation folding doves.”    

Those who normally made crafts folded doves instead, and members of the church’s youth groups followed suit. Lobenhofer, who left for maternity leave during the project’s final stages, said she came back to find her office filled with bags and bags of delicately folded birds. The teamwork, it seems, didn’t stop there. Led by worship chair Owen Taylor, crews of church members worked tirelessly in the days leading up to the Sept. 11, anniversary to suspend over 3,000 doves from the ceiling of the sanctuary. Once the work was done, Lobenhofer said, “It was breathtaking.” Lobenhofer said she expects the display to remain in the church until at least the end of October. She said the project has not only given the congregation a way to commemorate the anniversary of the terrorist attacks, but also a window into just how many lives were impacted by the tragedy. Said Lobenhofer, “To see all the doves and to know that each one represented a person who was lost— it just gave you a sense of the scope of what happened.”

Bethel United Methodist to celebrate renovated sanctuary Improvements to Goochland church include new paint job and lighting Contributed report

Bethel United Methodist Church will host a rededication service for its newly renovated sanctuary at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25. Following the worship service, lunch on the grounds will be provided. In early May of this year, renovations began in the sanctuary. This renewal project included insulating

and hanging sheet rock over the interior cinder block walls, adding new recessed lighting above the stained glass windows, new doors, crown molding around the windows and doorways, new carpet and new paint schemes; and installing glazed porcelain tile flooring in the foyer. in a one-room log building. In 1875, a second larger one-room building was constructed. In 1958, an education building was constructed, and the third sanctuary was built in 1960. Many Goochland families have called Bethel their church home during its 182 years of service to the community.

Goochland’s Alexis Wiggins (13) puts some finesse on a ball to get it past two Maggie Walker Governor’s School defenders in the four-set win that the Bulldogs put together. Wiggins led the team with 23 kllls.

Bulldogs take down Maggie Walker in four sets By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

What looked like a game that the Goochland girls volleyball team would cruise through in straight sets turned into a bit of a battle in sets three and four against Maggie Walker Governor’s School. But, the Bulldogs turned on their game once again in set four and led to a 25-13, 25-12, 21-25, 25-19 win over the Green Dragons at Goochland on Sept. 12.

Despite the win, coach Jennifer Erixon wasn’t happy with how her team performed against Maggie Walker. “Even in the second set, the 12 points that Maggie Walker scored were because of us,” she said. “We had so many unforced errors. We just couldn’t get control of them.” The Bulldogs held the lead from 4-3 in set one and the entirety of the second set in dominating fashion. But, in set three, Maggie Walker and Goochland traded points back

and forth through the first 11 total points before a Goochland error put it at 7-5 in favor of the Green Dragons. From there, Maggie Walker was able to stay out ahead of the Bulldogs until it was at set point. Goochland pushed the Green Dragons to six set points until Thomas Green put down a kill to put the set away in favor of Maggie Walker. “That third set, I don’t even know,” Erixon said. “It was just mistake, after mistake, after mistake. They started

to make a good comeback, but it was way too late. It was 14-24, 15-24 when they started making a comeback.” Goochland was able to re-establish a solid lead at 6-4 in set four and an 8-1 run in the middle of the set really allowed the Bulldogs to pull away. While there were mistakes aplenty by Goochland, the performance on the service line was undeniable. Kealie Lachniet had four aces for the Bulldogs, along with 12 digs. Maddie Goff had 14 kills, 13 digs and three aces. Alexis Wiggins led the

team in kills with 23, along with three digs and three blocks. “That was the one thing that we had going for us was our serves,” Erixon said. “That is one thing that I harp on constantly is serves and practicing serves.” While the performance was “frustrating” for Erixon, she said that she’d rather have a performance like the one on Sept. 12 now rather than later in the season.

Bradshaw, Bulldogs shutout Amelia By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Last week’s James River District matchup between Goochland and Amelia turned out to be a tale of two quarterbacks. Bulldogs senior signal caller Tanner Bradshaw utilized his strength and game davy to rack up two rushing touchdowns in a 21-0 win over the Raiders. Conversely, freshman Raider QB Isiah Marshall relied on his speed and elusiveness to frustrate Bulldog defenders, at least for the first half. In the end, Bradshaw left the field with the team’s third victory of the young season, and Marshall exited late in the game with a leg injury. On a night where nothing appeared to be easy, the two teams struggled through the first half in a defensive struggle, with several good drives for Goochland stymied by holding penalties. An untimely turnover by

the Raiders provided a late first half opportunity for the Bulldogs. Bradshaw broke the scoreless tie when he powered five yards for a score with seconds remaining in the half. The late score didn’t appease Bulldog coach Joe Fowler who was not pleased with the team’s first outing on the road. “At halftime we talked about how poorly we were playing. We were sustaining our blocks, we were stepping the wrong way and our backs weren’t running behind their pads,” Fowler said. A defense that is quickly making a name for themselves covered the offensive miscues and the offense stepped up its game. “They came out in the second half and started executing a lot better and playing with more urgency,” Fowler said. The Bulldogs answered the call, shutting down the Raiders opening drive of the second half and spoiling their attempt at a fake punt.

Bradshaw capped that drive with a three yard run giving the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead. On a sweltering night, Fowler kept his running backs fresh and a half dozen of them kept the pressure on a young Raider defense. “On miserably hot nights like tonight, it is vital to spread the ball around and try to keep people fresh.” The coach also played a number of players throughout the lineup to combat the difficult conditions. “We also rotated in eight different offensive linemen in an effort to keep kids fresh. Hopefully the reps that these kids are getting now will help us down the road. It gives us a lot of flexibility when someone gets tired or injured.” Running back Marcus Burton did not play due to an injury, but is expected to return next week, but running back Jasper filled the spot and provided the Bulldogs a final score, making the final 21-0. Fowler said his quarterback

took advantage of situations that he’s well equipped to handle against the Raiders. “Tanner is a load to bring down and when we get in those short yardage situations, it is an easy call for us,” Fowler said. And Bradshaw’s passing game continues to improve. “He did a good job of managing the game and taking care of the ball. Each week he gets a more comfortable throwing the ball.” If Goochland’s defense continues its current trend of lights out play, the Leemen will have their hands full next week. The squad has produced two shutouts in three games, and will be challenged when perennial powerhouse R.E. Lee takes on the Bulldogs. “Lee is always one of the most athletic teams in the state.,” Fowler said. Roundup: Cadets roll past St. Christopher’s By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Due to the high heat index, the game between Benedictine and St. Christopher’s had to be moved from Benedictine’s home field to Goochland High School on the night of Sept. 10. While the venue might have been different, the result was a familiar one as the Cadets rolled by the Saints 42-7. Benedictine’s defense was smothering of the St. Christopher’s run game, allowing only 28 yards on the

ground. Caleb Grimes had 217 rushing yards and three touchdowns for the Cadets. Ellis Brooks also had a rushing touchdown. Isaiah Anderson was 9 of 15 for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Benedictine has a bye week before facing Liberty Christian.

On the girls side, Anna Kate Wirsing was 17th with a 19:43.69. Sarah Creasey was 76th with a 22:01.07, while Jill Pillow was 112th with a 22:44.59. Over the past 15 years we’ve experienced budget shortfalls only four times—in 2008 at $665 million, in 2009 and 2010, a two-year period after “The Great Recession” began, at $6.1 billion, and in 2014 at $1.9 billion. One thing is certain: we will rebalance our budget, we will continue to encourage diversification of the private-sector economy, and we will not be increasing taxes.

Good clean fun Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help beautify local park, James River Contributed report

A

round 45 volunteers cleaned the James River and the banks of Tucker Park at Maidens Crossing on Saturday, Sept. 10. Sponsored by L. L. Bean’s Discovery School and Dominion, the event was part of the Friends of Goochland Parks’ annual Autumn River Days and the James River Advisory Council’s annual James River Regional CleanUp. Volunteers used canoes and kayaks in the river, searched the riverbank for debris and also picked up items on the surrounding roadsides, resulting in the collection of 32 bags of trash and recyclables, including 10 tires. Volunteers also assisted with maintenance of the park’s trail and butterfly garden. Autumn River Days is designed to promote environmental stewardship and showcase the natural and historical significance of Tucker Park. In addition to the clean-up, activities also included Stand Up Paddle boarding demonstrations by L. L. Bean and Friends of Goochland Parks’ board member Terry Hazelton as well as a presentation by Maymont Nature Center’s Animal Encounters. “It was a tremendous effort by our volunteers both in the river and on land,” said Friends of Goochland Parks’ board member Leigh Dunn, who coordinated the event. “Their work will make a real difference to Tucker Park, the James River, the wildlife, and its visitors. Tucker Park is located off Route 6, on Route 522, just past Maidens Loop. For more information visit www.tuckerparkva.com.
