‘Pet Lovers’ group gets supervisors’ support for shelter plan Nonprofit raising funds to add adoption center to planned new shelter By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Goochland County leaders have thrown their support behind an effort to improve the lives of pets housed at the county’s animal shelter, approving the appropriation of $50,000 to the recently-formed Goochland Pet Lovers organization. During the board’s monthly meeting on Oct. 4, former Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson explained the mission of the new nonprofit that she and a number of other Goochland residents came together to create in June. Dickson said that the group was formed to address the possibility of adding additional amenities to the new animal shelter the county is already planning to build. More broadly, she explained, the Goochland Pet Lovers’ goal “is to provide the best adoption and rescue experience for both pets in need and the community through an innovative public/private partnership.”

Shelter continued from >1 While the county is already planning to spend 3.3 million on the new animal shelter — with construction set to start in the spring of 2017 — Goochland Pet Lovers founders hope to raise an additional $1.5 million that will be used to add an adoption center to the facility. According to Dickson, the adoption center would add around 2,600 square feet to the main building’s 12,900 square feet, and will feature a

with a paying adult), and the car entry fee is $20. Vendor space is available for $25 per booth. The show will also feature music and games, a 50/50 raffle, and a People’s Choice judging. Valentine said Saunders continues to make progress — “it’s slow, but sure,” she noted — and also shared that the family recently received more welcome news: after hearing about Saunders’ accident, a local family offered to match all funds donated to the Rally For Riley organization dollar for dollar. The family, who wishes to remain anonymous, will match up

to $7,000. Valentine says the incredible support of the community has meant so much to Saunders and his family. Saunders’ attitude, she said, has also been truly remarkable. “He’s just so amazingly positive,” she said, “and I think that’s one of the reasons he’s doing so well. He’s just working as hard as he can.” Goochland High School is located at 3250 River Road West. reception area, plenty of room for volunteers to work, and the space to help foster better interaction between visitors and the animals housed there. Once completed, the facility “will put a new face on what the county is able to offer our community’s pets,” Dickson said. According to figures presented during the meeting, the annual budget for the Goochland Pet Lovers organization will be $150,000, around $90,000 of which will go towards staffing. The remaining portion will be

used to meet needs including marketing and legal services. While the group does not yet have its nonprofit designation finalized, it should be completed soon, Dickson said. Funds from the board will be transferred to the Goochland Pet Lovers upon completion of that process. Additionally, the supervisors during the meeting committed an additional $100,000 capital investment in the project, to be delivered once the Goochland Pet Lovers has reached its own fundraising goal.

FeedMore recognizes GFCFS for effort to stamp out hunger Contributed report

On Sept. 23, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services was recognized for their efforts to fight hunger during the FeedMore organization’s Partner Agency Conference. With nearly 300 representatives from FeedMore’s Partner Agency Network in attendance, the Nourishing Communities Together conference provided FeedMore’s partner agencies with the opportunity to learn, network, share best practices and strengthen their partnerships with other hunger-relief organizations in the region. Goochland was recognized for their annual food drive, an event that helps provide thousands of meals for local residents facing hunger. “This was a wonderful opportunity to bring together our partner agencies across Central Virginia and recognize their rather extraordinary accomplishments in the fight against hunger,” said Norm Gold, Chief Operations Officer at FeedMore. “From smaller organizations run solely by volunteers to more sophisticated partner agencies that operate out of a warehouse and have a Board of Directors, each of our partner agencies plays a vital role in the lives of our nearly 200,000 neighbors who struggle with hunger. Our partner agencies’ diverse backgrounds, wealth of experiences and passionate dedication to our mission, and most importantly our community, will help us continue to positively impact our neighbors in their times of need.”

FeedMore is Central Virginia’s core hunger-relief organization comprised of programs like the Central Virginia Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, the Mobile Pantry and Kids Cafe. Spanning nearly one-third of the state, across 34 cities and counties, FeedMore serves nearly 200,000 individuals in the region’s most vulnerable populations – children, families and seniors. For additional information, visit FeedMore. org, or find the organization on Facebook and Twitter.

GFCFS receives $100,000 from state Housing Coalition The Virginia Nonprofit Housing Coalition (VNHC) has awarded $100,000 to Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS). This gift from the Bob and Anna Schaberg Fund at VNHC will support the ALL. HERE. NOW. Capital Campaign to fund construction of a new building that will combine 11 critical assistance programs, including medical and dental clinics, food pantry, and Clothes Closet, in one location. Currently, GFCFS’s facilities, which consist of three separate locations with severely limited space, are no longer adequate to provide the high level of care for Goochland individuals and families in need. In 2015, GFCFS services impacted more than 1700 Goochland residents. “We believe in GFCFS’ vision to bring all of their programs to one location so they

can offer the most up-to-date services for their clients,” said Anna Lou Schaberg, Executive Director, the Bob and Anna Schaberg Fund at VNHC. “We are so grateful for the support from the Virginia Nonprofit Housing Coalition, added Lisa Luck, GFCFS Capital Campaign Chair. “The continuing encouragement from our community has put GFCFS in the extraordinary position to expand the highest quality of services and to prepare to meet the needs – now and in the future - here in Goochland.” The organization plans to build a 20,000 square foot building on the current site of the Family Services’ offices at 3001 River Road West as well as convert the existing main building into emergency housing. This central site was chosen to make it easier for clients to access all services. Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services is a non-profit organization that provides access to health care and basic human services to Goochland residents in need. GFCFS is a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation supported by individuals, churches, grants, and businesses who share its vision. For more information, visit www.GoochlandFreeC linicAndFamilyServices.org or find the organization on Facebook at www.facebook. com/gfcfs. For more information about supporting the ALL. HERE. NOW. Holiday would offer respite from vitriol Praise for a By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Let me be clear: I have no authority to do this. But I would like to take this opportunity to propose a new holiday that all Americans can add to their calendars for the year 2017. It won’t be as much fun as Christmas or as delicious as Thanksgiving. It will carry significantly less weight than Presidents Day, but slightly more than National

Cherry Popover Day (Sept. 1, if you’re interested). School children will still have to go to school and banks will remain open, but we may be able to arrange a parade through the town square if the weather is nice. So, you are probably wondering right about now, what on Earth could this newfangled holiday possibly be? Well then, without further ado, allow me to introduce…the inaugural National Take Your Thumb Out of

Somebody’s Eye Day. Yes, that’s right. I sincerely feel that it is high time we set aside a single day each calendar year for every person living in these United States to take a good hard look at themselves, consider one thing they do that irritates the bejesus out of someone else, and stop doing that thing. Seriously, can you picture it? For one day, no one would get in the “10 Items or Less” line at the

grocery store with 17 items, then argue that apples, pears and bananas should count as one item because they are all fruit. Nobody who wasn’t disabled would park in a handicapped parking space because they “just had to run in the store for two seconds.” Vegans would stop looking so smug, and meat eaters would stop referring to vegans as bark-eating see Holiday > 7

sister who always led by example By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

When our father passed away suddenly when I was in fourth grade and she was in seventh, I didn’t realize that her pain and suffering were much worse than mine. I was on the edge of adolescence, not quite old enough to understand the real heartbreak that sometimes accompanies life. She was destroyed by his loss, and we huddled closer after he was gone. Our family dynamics changed after his death, and Rebecca remained as my rock for all the years that followed. She supported me in college pursuits, defended me when trouble arose, exposed me to a world of literature and politics and put up with quite an amount of foolishness through all of those emotions. For many years, I feared Rebecca’s kindness would result in someone taking advantage of her, or some fool mistaking her kindness for weakness. But all who encountered her quickly learned a quiet demeanor and subtle style did not equate to weakness or lack of intensity, and she quickly rose to the top of her field. Through the years, miles separated our families, but we still maintained that special brother-sister relationship. She unashamedly claims me as her little brother, and I am glad to have her as my older and only sister. It’s also hard to believe that this month, my sister turns 70 years old. For me, that’s hard to accept and I often think of our time as kids as we played on the swings or played kickball. I doubt either of us will be duplicating those feats this October. As she gathers with her kids and grandchildren for the big celebration, my thoughts won’t be far away. For all the words of support, the love and kept promises, I’m eternally grateful to the best friend I’ve ever had in this world, my sister.

Goochland’s defense was solid once again Friday, Oc.t 7, against Buckingham in the 49-8 win. The defense got after the Buckingham quarterback throughout the game and held the Knights offense in check.

Goochland rolls to a 49-8 win over Knights By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Something seemed different when the Buckingham Knights took the field to combat what seemed like an insurmountable force in the form of the Goochland Bulldogs. It was the Knights first trip to Goochland since the death of long time coach Craig Gill last year. The

noticeable absence permeated both sides of the field. “It was different not having Coach Gill over there. Just his voice was enough to inspire kids. He was special man and a great coach,” coach Joe Fowler said. “He touched an awful lot of lives over the past 30 years of coaching. Buckingham is struggling with the transition, but they have a lot of pride over there and I’m

confident that they will get it turned around soon,” Fowler added. But, this night clearly belonged to the Bulldogs who racked up some gawdy numbers on offense and recorded their seventh win of the season, 49-8. Goochland entered the game seeking to establish its outside running game. While the fullback position has produced the bulk of the yards so far

this season, the running backs consistently gained the edge against an undermanned Buckingham defense. “The past few opponents had been focusing on shutting down our outside running game and we had been having success between the tackles. But this week, Buckingham tried to take away our inside stuff and that allowed our halfbacks to get on the edge and gain a lot of yards,” the

coach said. The onslaught started early with Calvin Martin scoring two first quarter rushing touchdowns. “We came out of the gate really well. Offensively we played with great tempo and were able to move the ball down the field quickly,” Fowler said. “I thought our offensive line and

Galaxy U10 wins Columbus Day tourney Submitted report

Goochland United Soccer Association’s first U10 travel soccer team took first place in the Richmond Kickers Columbus Day tournament. The Galaxy were undefeated on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 and won the Classic Division.

Bulldogs continued from >12 backs did a great job of blocking for each other.” And Goochland’s stingy defense continued its dominating play. “Defensively, it was more of the same. Those guys have been playing great and continue to shut down the other teams” By halftime, the Bulldogs had amassed 19 first downs and led the Knights 42-0, and the second half proved even

“These boys have worked hard all season,” coach Steve Geyer said. “They deserved a weekend of soccer against other U10 competition. Our kids played with a ton of teamwork and sportsmanship.” Conner Raugh scored four goals in the tournament. Jacob Tickle had two first more challenging, as Knight quarterback backup quarterback Tyrese Ayres spent much of the final 24 minutes running for his life. “Our defensive line makes life hard for the opposing QB and that got after them pretty good again this week. We had multiple sacks and didn’t give them a chance to set their feet,” Fowler said. The game took an unexpected turn in the fourth quarter as three Knight players collided with each other and all required emergency care and a

obviously had a good effect.” Erixon said that initially, the Bulldogs were a bit unsure with the changes in the lineup. “At first, they were like ‘why?’” Erixon said. “I said ‘because you need it and because you’re bored with this and need to learn something new about volleyball. So, (on Oct. 11) there might be something different and (on Oct. 13) there might be something different. But, they’re excited for it and they’re ok with it.” One player that benefitted from the lineup change was Alexis Wiggins. Wiggins had been playing primarily in the middle as a blocker. But, Erixon moved her to outside hitter and let her swing away, which she certainly did. Wiggins led the team with

20 kills on 35 attempts. “She had an awesome night,” Erixon said. “In club, she played the outside a little bit, but I’ve had her in the middle for blocking purposes. I gave it a shot with her on the outside and see how she does. She did great. We’ve been working on her patience and her transitions on the outside.” Maddie Goff had 11 kills and six aces, leading a strong Goochland effort from the service line. Faith Gerdes had 20 digs and two kills, while Kealie Lachniet had 13 digs and four kills. Goochland hit the road to Prince Edward on Oct. 11 and travel to Buckingham on Oct. 13.
