Goochland’s popular Fall Festival celebrates 10th year on Oct. 29 By Roslyn Ryan Editor
It’s generally not difficult this time of year to find someone who is looking forward to Goochland’s annual Fall Festival, a free event that is once again expected to draw thousands when it kicks off at noon on Oct. 29. But for Goochland County recreation manager Michelle Swalin, the annual celebrasee Fall Festival> 4

Citing health concerns, Norman Sales has announced that he will resign from his role as County Attorney, a position he’s held since January of 2010. Sales shared his decision with the Board of Supervisors during a closed session on Oct. 4. An official date of retirement was not given, but, according to a statement released by the county, is expected to be no later than Jan. 31, 2017. “As I explained to the full Board during the recent closed meeting,” Sales said in a statement released shortly after the meeting, “I have concluded that I will not be able to fully perform all of the duties of County Attorney at my personal high Sales standards and simultaneously devote sufficient time and attention to my health.” The news was met with sadness by supervisors and staff members, but also with appreciation for Sales’ service. “I can’t begin to describe the gratitude this see Sales > 2

Although this is a sad day for us in many ways, we want to wish Mr. Sales all the best now and in the future as he begins his journey to a long and healthy retirement.” Prior to coming to Goochland, Sales served for over 20 years in the City Attorney’s Office for the City of Richmond, the last four of which were as City Attorney. This experience enabled Sales to serve as an integral part of the leadership team at Goochland County.
Most recently, Sales stepped up to serve as Goochland’s Acting County Administrator in the wake of former County Administrator Rebecca Dickson’s retirement last April. To District 2 supervisor Manuel Alvarez, Sales’ departure will mean saying farewell to both a skilled legal mind and a good friend. “He is probably the most professional person I have ever known,” Alvarez said. “He is a person you can trust to always do and say the right thing. His legal opinions are well studied and thorough. But while I will certainly miss his legal advice, mostly I’ll miss his sense of humor and the great person and great partner that he has been and I wish him great health and a happy retirement.”

Just go. For Goochland resident Michael Smith, those were the two little words that started it all. It was 2013, and Smith, a father of five then working for Capital One, was grieving the loss of his parents after losing both just a few months apart. Looking back on those last precious moments he’s spent with his parents, Smith’s thoughts drifted to his wife and children, and the cross-country road trip they always said they would take. He thought about the time and expense, the work that would be missed and the amount of planning that would be required. There was also the fact that he had never before driven anything even close to the size of the 31-foot travel trailer the family had hoped to use. But it was then, as he pondered all of this, that the words came to him: Just go. “I think I finally just realized that if you wait until you really have the time, you might not have the health,” said Smith. With that in mind, the planning began in earnest. On June 1, Smith, his wife Allison, her mother Rose, four of the couple’s children and two dogs, set out from their home in Gum Spring. Their plan was to tour America’s

National Parks, visiting as many as they could. To Smith, the journey was less about the miles logged and more about spending time with his family and making what had been a dream into a reality. Recognizing that they were “extremely blessed” to be able to make the trip, Smith said the secret to making it happen was simply embracing the unknown and taking the leap. “So many times, I know we say ‘One day I’m going to do this or that,’” Smith said. “This time, we said ‘Let’s make that day today.’” While the planned nineweek excursion would eventu-
ally be cut a few weeks short — and a malfunctioning air conditioner leeched some of the enjoyment from a drive through California — Smith still marvels at the things they were able to see and do on their journey. Over the course of the trip, the family covered over 7,000 miles and 13 states. They visited 11 National Parks and monuments, and saw many other State Parks, museums, and tourist sites. Smith recently created a book about the trip for his family, and said he hoped that someday his children will look see Road Trip > 4

event get bigger every year. “I would definitely say it is very near and dear to my heart,” said Swalin several weeks ago, offering a peek at the lengthy list of things that needed to be done in order to make sure the festival goes off without a hitch. Swalin said the event has always been popular — particularly since it offers activities for all ages — and explained that, by the time the fourth year came around, organizers realized that they needed more space for parking than the festival’s original location at Hidden Rock Park could provide. Now held at the Goochland Sports Complex, the Fall Festival is expected to draw around 4,000 people this year.
Once on the grounds, revelers will enjoy activities and attractions ranging from pony rides and a petting zoo to displays from the Keystone Truck and Tractor Museum, pumpkin painting and the much-loved — and always entertaining — Halloween Costume Contest. Swalin laughed as she recalled several of the more creative costumes she’s seen over the years, from children dressed up as Lego people to a masterfully created pair of T-Rex costumes. To her, the best part of the event is getting to see the families enjoying all of the activities and spending time together. “I really feel as though I’m getting to see some cherished memories being made,” Swalin says, “and that’s really special.”

Three Blind Mice and a Mona Lisa.
The question of who makes Goochland’s best apple pie will once again be decided on Oct. 29, as bakers from across the county compete in the fourth annual Apple Pie contest at the Goochland County Fall Festival. The contest is open to anyone wishing to enter an apple pie, and more than one entry is allowed (provided it is a different apple pie recipe). Only double crust apple pies will be accepted, which means no crumbles, crisps or cobblers, and pies must be checked in by noon on the day of the contest (judging takes place at 1 p.m.) In addition, contestants are advised that no other fruits will be allowed in the pie, and the pie cannot require heating, refrigeration or special handling, or contain raw or uncooked eggs. Judges decisions are final and pie pans will not be returned, so all contestants are encouraged to use disposable pans.

Election should serve as cautionary tale By Roslyn Ryan Editor
No matter who you are, or where you live, it’s been difficult for the past few weeks to escape the breathless coverage of the 2016 Presidential Election, an event that — even in its death rattle — manages to find new, lower levels beneath what we’d all previously believed was rock bottom. While Donald Trump self-immolates and Hillary Clinton gloats, many of us have predictably leaned in a bit closer to witness what so many could never have fathomed. Cringe-worthy as it is — almost too much so, at times — it has been as addictively compelling as any reality television show ever created. The television is usually on when I am at home, tuned to a cable news station that feeds a steady drip of the latest terrible twists and turns in the campaign. And so it happened
to be on last week, humming in the background as I surfed the internet, when I came upon an article written by a military wife. The story she told was sweet and funny — the ups and downs of military life, the challenges of being a free-spirited Floridian married into a buttoned-up, conservative Texas family. She wrote about the many times they had to move, and how her husband’s deployment brought her and her previously distant motherin-law closer. Off in the other room, more details were being revealed about something stupid Donald Trump said on a bus, and something Hillary Clinton did three decades ago. But the buoyant, uplifting story I was reading suddenly seemed far more compelling, a much-needed shot of optimism and hope. Military families, after all, are among the unsung heroes of this country, the ones who make count-
less sacrifices and give far more than they ever get. Simply put, they are a model for us all. And as my television spewed forth more muffled quotes and factoids about the election — most of it repetitive drivel — I found myself marveling at the quiet strength of this woman, and the fortitude it must have taken to deal with having a husband deployed for so many months. It wasn’t until near the end of the story that the author shared one pertinent detail that changed everything. Her husband, she explained, never made it home from that deployment. He had been killed in a helicopter crash, leaving her a widow at 26. As my heart broke in two, I could hear the political analysts in the other room, licking their chops as they tucked into the scandal of the day. I got up and turned it off. My God, I thought to myself. My God.
As the Presidential race has devolved over the past few weeks, it has been easy at times to forget what is at stake. This is not a plea for one candidate over another, or even a prompt to go out and vote. It is simply a reminder that there are millions of people who have fought for this country — for our rights and our freedoms — and over a million who have died protecting it. And while it’s easy to get caught up in the theater-of-the-absurd production unfolding live every day, I have come to the conclusion that we do so at our own peril. This is not about memes and bumper stickers. This is not about my side versus yours. This is not a reality show. As the end of this debacle draws near, no matter who you are voting for, please take a moment and take note of how we got here. And let’s never do this again.
With email now king, hacking a growing threat By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Getting used to the new normal of hacked emails and internet security breaches may not be as easy as it sounds. Truth is, predictions that foresaw the massive influence of electronic mail decades ago were right on tar-
get, and America and the world has evolved to an almost internet dependent existence, both in business and personal relationships. And what seemed like one of the most secure methods to reveal information is, each day, becoming more like a leaking bucket of hacked information. Some experts are saying the death

of email can’t be far behind the epidemic levels of leaks and intrusions, and it’s certainly true that once Americans lose trust in the system, it’s use will decline. What do we replace it with might be a more pressing question for computer wizs to tackle in the coming years. In addition to the technical fail-

Letter to the Editor Bedell is the right candidate for those who want progress Dear Editor, Election Day is less than 4 weeks away and, believe it or not, the voters of Goochland County can make their mark on how Congress operates. We can either vote for Dave Brat and endure more of the same gridlock and obstructionism that he’s committed to and has proved is ineffective, or we can get Congress working together again by voting for Eileen Bedell, our Democratic candidate for the 7th U.S. Congressional District. Eileen Bedell is a mother, lawyer, and successful small business owner. She is committed to improving and preserving Social Security and Medicare for our seniors who worked hard for those benefits, many of whom have no other sources of income. She believes in gun owner rights; however, she wants to close dangerous loopholes that have killed many innocent people unnecessarily and could have been prevented through simple checks and balances. She will be a champion of living wages, enhancing business opportunities, supporting job growth, and protecting hard-won civil rights for ALL people. Eileen will work across the aisle in Congress to help improve public and higher education and access to affordable healthcare for everyone. She believes in sensible immigration reform, reigning in wasteful military spending, and preserving our fragile environment. Dave Brat has done virtually nothing in the two years he’s been your Congressperson. GovTrack. com shows he ranks dead last of all Virginians in Congress for acting in a bipartisan way and reaching out across the aisle. The only bill he introduced that was see Letters > page 7

Who among us would want our private emails published for all to examine and judge? As a journalist, it’s a new brand of news gathering that is troubling on several levels. the documents, it couldn’t be used. It’s also important to note that not one word of the leaked emails or stolen documents could be used in a court of law because of their unknown origin and possibly illegal sourcing. To be fair, I also cringed at the release of the latest tape depicting Donald Trump in a moment he surely thought was private. Although I acknowledge the unacceptable nature of the conversation, I’m still not sure if it should have been aired given the private nature of the encounter. Anyway, it all falls under the mantra of the new normal: Election 2016 style. It all looks like a race to the bottom to me. Am I being too
cynical? Or does the new normal include never having the peace of mind that knowing confidential correspondence is secure and being read by only the person it’s addressed to. It doesn’t seem like a lot of ask. And just maybe cyber security is something all of us should address and consider since the implications of its abuse could change the way we live our lives, or the privacy we deserve to expect. I think it’s safe to say there’s no chance of a return to snail mail, but, considering the number of hacked businesses and leaked documents, that outdated envelope provided a sense of privacy that the most sophisticated of computer systems, apparently, cannot.

Goochland defensive standout Cole Nuckols (6), seen here against Buckingham, took advantage of his snaps at running back against Nottoway on Oct. 14 and scored a second half touchdown for Goochland.
Goochland thumps Nottoway, preps for Central By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Before last week’s game at Nottoway, Goochland coach Joe Fowler expressed concerns that his team was not playing as well on the road as they had at home. After a 45-16 drubbing of the home standing Cougars, many of those nagging doubts were
removed, and now the coach can concentrate on the one team that could provide the fly in the ointment for the Bulldogs playoff run — Central. But before that prep could begin, Nottoway stood between the Bulldogs and their eighth victory of the season. Tanner Bradshaw scored on a quarterback sneak on Goochland’s
first possession, and kicker Zach Gordon added three more in the first period. John King sprinted 35 yards in the second period to find pay dirt for the Bulldogs, and a Calvin Martin interception killed the Cougars final drive before intermission, so the Bulldogs took a 17-0 advantage to the locker room at halftime. “I thought we played really well
at times,” Fowler said. “Offensively we were able to throw the ball effectively and keep Nottoway off balance. We were stout on defense and able to get them off the field on third down.” Nottoway took the second half kickoff and mounted one of its best drives, but defensive linemen Jamal Carter lowered the boom on Nottoway running back Devonte
Booth and ended the Cougars opening drive. Goochland took over on its 32yard line and Bradshaw connected with Dallas Holmes for two long receptions that set up another quarterback sneak to make the score 240. The Bulldogs followed up that

Mix of youth, experience winning formula for Bulldogs XC By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The Goochland girls cross country team has freshman that are excelling in their first seasons. On the boys side, experience reigns supreme with seniors leading the way for the Bulldogs. While the two squads have taken two different paths this year, they have lead to the same success for both the boys and girls cross country teams. “So far, both teams are doing very well,” Goochland cross country coach Henry Jones said. “At this point, the girls team is undefeated. The boys, they’ve won every meet except one matchup against Cumberland and are looking very strong thus far.” Jones said that six of the top 10 runners on the boys team are seniors. The top-heavy lineup has been very effective this season. “That has helped having that consistency from the prior years,” he said.“One senior, Josh Hobbs, has really stepped up being our number two runner this, falling behind our number one runner Austin Bruce. Austin continues to excel and is having a great season.”
Bulldogs continued from >12 score with a successful onside kick, and scored quickly after a 42 yard run by Jasper Carter. Cole Nuckols covered the final three yards to make the third quarter score 30-0. Goochland scored again when Cordell Mattox picked a Devonte Booth fumble, and broke a 40-yard run to the Cougars end zone on the ensu-
Oppositely, Jones said that the girls squad is led by a pool of five freshman. “They are just working off of each other and really shooting high as far as what they want to achieve,” he said. “They really want to succeed. They are led by Anna Kate Wirsing, who’s our number one runner. Our number two runner, Marissa Schroder, is right there with her. Those five freshman girls along with senior Jontey Reynolds and our junior Jill Pillow and a couple other girls, they’ve worked hard to step up the girls program.” Wirsing’s adjustment to the high school running style in particular was a natural transition for her. “She’s just so competitive,” Jones said. “She showed promise last year when she ran as an eighth grader. Her and the other girls, they know each other. There was only one new one coming in, and she’s just blended in. But, those five girls, they’re really getting fast and they are all pushing each other to do the best that they can.” On Oct. 15, both the teams participated in the Milestat.com Cross Country Invitational at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville. Both teams posted stellar ing play. After a successful twopoint conversion, the Bulldogs led 38-0 as the third quarter ended. The Cougars mounted a final quarter 85-yard drive, and, when Donnell Epps darted 21 yards, Nottoway set up their offense on the Bulldogs’ four-yard line. A tremendous second effort allowed Booth to score from four yards out to make the score 38-8.

The Goochland girls and boys cross country teams have been having a lot of success this season, most recently at the Milestat meet..
times at the prestigious meet. Wirsing was third in the Varsity C girls meet with a 20:27. Schroder was 42nd with a 22:29, followed by Sarah Creasey in 76th with a 23:21, Reynolds in 80th with a 23:23, Maddie Muniz in 97th with a 23:54, Jill Pillow in 116th with a 24:33, Elizabeth Golightly was 118th with a 24:44 and finally Gunnhildur Thorkelsdottir was 124th with a 25:02. For the boys team, Bruce matched Wirsing’s finish in the
Varsity C Boys race with a time of 16:50. Hobbs was 33rd with a 17:52 and was followed by Robert Franck’s 75th place finish with an 18:36. Larry Minor Jr. was 108th with a 19:00, Kade Adamy was 137th with a 19:29, Nathan Owens was 164th with a 20:19, Carter Palen was 178th with a 20:45 and Brandon Pleasants was 186th with a 21:09. The teams participated in the James River District meet
on Oct. 19 and will run in the Conference 34 tournament on Oct. 26. Jones said that the playoffs will be a good test for his girls team. “For the girls, it is a building season,” he said. “They’re doing great, but going beyond the district, I feel like they’ll be the top gun in the conference meet. But, once they get to (the) regional (meet), that’s when it’ll be a wake up call to see where they truly are and
see if they can compete at that level. Even I’m kind of uncertain with what they’re going to do. They had a great race at Milestat, all the girls ran exceptionally well.” On the boys side, Jones said that he expects that team to have a strong showing as well. “They just keep doing what they’ve always been doing,” he said. Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com or on Twitter @BillyFellin.
Booth took advantage of an unbalanced offensive line to find running room on the Cougars’ final drive, picking up chunks of yardage on the ground. “We stayed in our base defense in the second half and they were able to put together a good drive,” Fowler said. “But it will give us some learning opportunities on film to show our guys this week.” The senior running back
was rewarded for his persistence when he scored again from three yards out to make the score 38-16. Nuckols picked up 30 yards on a tough run to set the Bulldogs up in the Cougars’ red zone. Perry Snead-Johnson broke a number of tackles to traverse 18 yards and put the game out of reach at 45-8 with 9:19 remaining. And now, Goochland turns
their attentions to Central and a squad that could provide a stern test for the undefeated Bulldogs. “Central comes in here on a six-game win streak and they are one of the hottest teams in the state. They play a physical style of offense that somewhat mirrors our philosophy,” Fowler said. Fowler and all of his players know the importance of the upcoming match, and home
field advantage will be on the line when the teams meet this Friday. “Winning this game will give us a great chance of getting the number one seed in the east. But we can’t worry about the playoffs right now,” Fowler said. “It is going to be a great atmosphere on Friday. We hope that we can get a big crowd out there to support us,” the coach added.
