Deputy administrator says serving Goochland has been “a privilege”
Landowners must have revalidation form to assessor’s office by Nov. 1 to avoid $25 penalty
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
For the second time in less than a month, Goochland County Administration employees learned they will be saying goodbye to a respected member of their team. Effective Jan. 1, Goochland’s deputy county administrator Daniel J. Schardein, III will be retiring. “It has been a real privilege to serve the citizens of Goochland County in the capacity of Deputy County Administrator for Community Development,” Schardein said last week, “and I consider it an honor to conclude my public service career here in this wonderful county.” Schardein has served as deputy county adminSchardein istrator for over four years, joining Goochland County in May of 2012. Prior to coming to Goochland, he served for over 25 years in Loudoun and Stafford Counties, focusing on community development. “I certainly hope my years of previous experience working in several of the highest growth communities in Virginia proved beneficial during my time here in Goochland see Schardein > 3
Land Use deadline looming
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland County assessor Mary Ann Davis is on a mission. With the recently adopted requirement that all residents taking advantage of the county’s Land Use program must have their participation in the program revalidated annually, Davis and her staff are out to make sure that no landowner who wants to stay in the program is left behind. To that end, they have sent out multiple notices — printed on bright orange paper — by mail, explaining to residents that they must revalidate by Nov. 1 or face a $25 penalty. They have appeared at recent Town Hall meetings, and held a forum so that any landowners with questions or concerns could receive immediate answers. Davis says their efforts appear to be working: of the 2,000 parcels currently in land use, the office has received around 1,300. “It’s good,” said Davis, “and I’m glad we did get those, but we

Schools’ Career and Technical Education program proves a draw for local students Enrollment is up by 26 percent over the last three years Contributed report
Goochland County Public Schools’ investment in Career and Technical Education has resulted in significant growth in student enrollment and offerings since 2014. According to Bruce Watson, GCPS Director of Career and Technical Education, the number of sections of CTE classes has grown from 72 to 100, and the total number of students enrolled has increased from 1,424 to 1,788, a 26 percent increase in 3 years. cooperation with the School Board and Board of Supervisors, has made Career and Technical Education a priority since the current School Board assumed office in 2011. An investment of over $2.5 million and the repurposing of facilities created state of the art culinary, heavy equipment, carpentry, nurse aide, and robotics classrooms that have attracted a wide variety of students, male and female, from across the district. Career and Technical Education has created results across the curriculum. “The skills students are exposed to in an authentic context in CTE classes reinforce the significance of many core content classes, including most math and science classes. The success of CTE is the success of our entire district”, said Watson. “I believe that Career and Technical
Education gives all of our students a step up. It enhances the transcripts of all students, not only our college bound students,” said Michael Payne, Goochland County School Board representative from District 1 and Career and Technical Education Teacher. “It gives them an opportunity to gain skills that can make them career ready after high school. I am very happy with the progress we have made in Goochland over the last five years and look forward to us moving forward with our business partners in giving our students apprenticeship and internship opportunities.” GCPS plans to seek opportunities to grow its CTE offerings and explore partnerships with local businesses to fulfill its mission to make our students career ready.
and Environmental & Land Development. In addition, he has been an active participant in the Virginia Local Government Management Association (VLGMA), Virginia Association of Zoning Officials (VAZO), the Virginia Rural Planning Caucus, and other professional organizations. Goochland county administrator John Budesky, who came on board this summer, noted
that Schardein has been a tremendous help to him. “Dan Schardein has been an integral member of the leadership team for Goochland and a vital asset as I transitioned to the role of county administrator,” Budesky said. “I commend him for his 30 of service in local government and wish him a healthy and bright future as he embarks upon retirement.” Schardein’s retirement
marks the fourth departure this year by a high level member of the County Administration. Former Goochland county administrator Rebecca Dickson retired in April, and John Wack, former deputy administrator for financial services, was hired in July as finance director for the City of Richmond. County Attorney Norman Sales announced Oct. 4 that he will retire by Jan. 31, 2017.
admits she wasn’t sure if he was going to make it. The staff spent the next several days giving the dog — dubbed “Little Man”— baths to help relieve the vicious skin irritation that enveloped much of his body, and watching for signs of improvement. While he spent the first few days doing little more than lying on the small bed in his kennel, he gradually began to come around. He would spend the next several months in the shelter, getting stronger and waiting
on a permanent home. Finally, this month, the wait came to an end when Allen Deane arrived at the shelter. Deane, who along with his wife Heather has taken in numerous rescue animals over the years, reported Tuesday that the pup — now fully recovered — is settling in just fine. Rechristened “Chopper,” he fits in well with the family’s two other dogs, Deane said, as well as their two horses and three cats. If it has taken a little extra
effort to get Chopper on board with house training, Deane insists it’s been well worth it. “It just takes a little patience,” Deane said, “but he’s doing great.” To Lawrence, Chopper’s story is just one more example of why she and the staff at the shelter continue to work so hard on behalf of the animals housed at the shelter. “To me, it’s just really something when these animals come in and then you see them adopted,” said Lawrence. “It just makes it all worth it.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
On the radio: Tuning in for a different perspective By Roslyn Ryan Editor
To any of you who have recently found yourselves up just a little too late, staring at a Facebook page, wishing that a meteor would hit the author of some election-related post you vehemently disagree with — I feel your pain. I’ve been there. And yet I’ve also tried, during this most corrosive and disheartening of campaign seasons, to figure out just how we got here. So, in a sincere effort to reach across the ideological aisle, I recently decided to immerse myself in the one medium that would offer immediate,
unfettered access to people who were likely to view this election somewhat differently than I do. I decided, dear readers, to start listening to conservative talk radio. Over the course of several weeks, I listened as often as I could, usually when I was in the car and could do so without much interruption. I’m happy to report that, by the end of the experiment, I had been both entertained and also moved to at least examine my own positions more closely. Also, as if by magic, I was able to have more thoughtful conversations with people of ideological stripes far different than mine. And while I couldn’t help but
notice that talk radio hosts seem to become more and more “unshackled” — that’s the word we’re going with these days, right?— the later the hour, I also developed an honest-to-God appreciation for their passion and conviction. I even got used to the yelling. In fact, just about the only thing I really didn’t enjoy was the fact that the one overarching theme of many of the programs — and the commercials --could be boiled down to just two very short sentences: Be afraid. Be very afraid. Over and over again, I noted a focus on stoking fears and penchant for forecasting mayhem.
Call me crazy, but I’m skeptical when someone is being paid handsomely to scare me. If a man is deadset on convincing me it’s going to rain, I like to know he isn’t an umbrella salesman. Once this election is over, no matter who wins, my hope is that we will all find a way to slowly climb out of our respective foxholes and examine our preconceived notions about one another. Because if we don’t learn to work together, we are simply going to repeat this brutal cycle every election season. And the only real winner is going to be the guy selling umbrellas.
A final end to long-standing ‘Curse of the Goat’? By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
The fans at Wrigley Field were rocking on Saturday night as their beloved Chicago Cubs claimed their first pennant in more than seven decades. It’s hard to imagine who wouldn’t take some joy in the success of the lovable losers after years of frustration and mediocrity, often at the south end of a cruel joke or familiar insult. Throughout those years of disap-
pointing seasons and dashed hopes, the Cubs have assembled a legion of fans who, each year, begin the new season with a belief that this could be the year. They are legendary in their allegiance, unequalled in their ability to ward off the demons of disappointment and notorious in their ability to forget the past and remain positive. It almost paid off for Chicago fans last season, but the curse of the goat reared its ugly head again and thwarted what looked like a sure run to a pennant. I suppose it was

not a surprise to loyal Cubs fans that the team came up short in the end, and another winter began for a team still seeking the redemption that can only come in the form of a championship. The curse of that aforementioned goat began in 1945 when local saloon owner named Billy “Goat” Sianis, a loyal Cubs fan, brought his pet goat to Game 4 of the World Series. The Cubs held a 2-1 advantage when ushers at Wrigley refused entry to the four-legged fan, and Sianis pledged the Cubs would never win
a pennant, forever cursed for the mistreatment of his goat. Shortly before his death, Sianis attempted to remove the curse but occult predictions are sometimes unbothered by the wishes of the living and the curse continued. The goat was given red carpet treatment at Wrigley as fans attempted to break the curse. It almost worked in 1984 when the Cubs were eight outs away from a pennant and trip to the Series when disaster see Ridolphi > 8

Letter to the Editor Clinton is best choice to lead United States Dear Editor: On Nov.8, I will feel proud voting for the person who possesses the temperament and experience essential to be our next President; is best able to work with members of Congress of all parties; will make decisions in the best interest of the entire country; has had experience drafting and supporting federal legislation; has a reputation of getting results through government; and shows a sincere desire to move our country forward: Hillary Clinton. As one of the most accomplished people ever to run for the Presidency, Clinton has had a long and productive public service career. Here are just a few of her signature achievements, proof she can take on tough issues and get things done! As First Lady for eight years, she helped create and guide through Congress the Children’s Health Insurance Program, a key program that brought health care coverage to millions of children. As a U.S. Senator for eight years, she pushed forward the investigation of health issues faced by 9/11 first responders. As Secretary of State for four years, she accomplished the nearly impossible mission of getting China, Russia, the European Union and the rest of the civilized world on board with strong sanctions against Iran. Clinton’s early life experiences shaped her adult life of service: the daughter of a small business owner and homemaker, she was raised with long-established middle-American values that emphasized family, faith, education and social obligations. She has proven over the course of her entire life she has what is needed to run our great and diverse nation: drive, intelligence, moral character, compassion, collaboration, thick skin and respect for others. see Letters > page 9

After inadvertently reaching for a foul ball and preventing the left fielder from making the inning ending catch, Bartman instantly became the most hated man in Chicago, and lives in seclusion and anonymity to this day. Hopefully, his curse also will end this year. And Chicago’s lovable losers have come close several times since Bartman’s brush with the dreaded curse, including last year. But, this year the goat’s revenge seems seriously threatened as the Cubs prepare to enter the World Series against the Cleveland Indians, and Cubs fans are once again rejuvenated, believers again that, by late October, Chicago will be Title Town once more. For now, it’s celebration time for Cubbies everywhere as the team clears a hurdle that surely seemed like a curse
since 1945. I must admit I could best be described as a Johnny Come Lately when it comes to being a Cubs fan. I joined largely out of a sense of empathy, or even sympathy, for the long-suffering nature of the mission. Like many Cub fans, I consider my loyalty more of an exercise in character building. Now, I’m happy but more than a little nervous how this all turns out. Great expectations have resulted in the demise of mightier missions than the Cubs run to a championship, and playing and performing with the hopes and dreams of millions can’t be easy. And, just maybe the real victory is concealed in the mission, and the success of this season, that feeling of elation and victory, are enough to savor for long-denied fans, but I doubt it. And there’s still that pesky goat and a curse that resides who knows where at this point, but consider this small coincidence that almost went unnoticed as the Cubs celebrated their first trip to the World Series since 1945. The night that the Cubs captured their first trip to the Series in 71 years will be recorded as October 22, 2016 — 46 years to the day since the death of Billy “Goat” Sianis.
Autumn? 1 Here are 10 fun, fascinating facts to know about fall
A
utumn is a season of many changes, with some of the most notable including the dramatic multicolored displays that occur just prior to trees shedding their leaves. It’s also a time of year when many people feel reenergized by cooler temperatures and spend many hours outdoors enjoying all that fall has to offer. Whether one is collecting leaves, picking apples, exploring corn mazes, or driving the countryside enjoying the foliage, autumn is full of fun facts that can make the season that much more enjoyable.

Autumn begins on the autumnal equinox, which occurs on or near September 22 in the northern hemisphere. This year, September 22 is the day when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving southward. When the equinox occurs, there are an equal number of daylight and nighttime hours.

Since ancient times, autumn has been an important time of year for many civilizations. Autumn is a main harvesting time in many areas, and a successful harvest was once necessary for survival. Many steps are, and have long been, taken to ensure a bountiful autumn harvest.
3
Fall is a time when trees and other plants prepare for dormancy during winter. As autumn progresses and the hours of daylight gradually decrease, trees begin to close down

4
Some scientists believe that global climate change can impact autumn colors, such as delaying the change in trees. Also, red pigments may start to decline as trees use sugary fuel to grow new twigs rather than to cause red leaf displays.

Americans more readily refer to this time of year as “fall,” while the British use “autumn.” Both terms date back to around the 16th century. Prior to this period, autumn was known as “harvest.”

Much of the United States bids farewell to monarch butterflies in the fall. Each autumn, monarch butterflies migrate from the United States to Mexico and some parts of Southern California. They fly at speeds ranging between 12 and 25 miles per hour.
7
A study of U.S. centenarians born between 1880 to 1895 published in the Journal of Aging Research, found that babies born during autumn months are more likely to live to age 100 than those born during the rest of the year. Thirty percent of the centenarians followed were born during the fall.
8
Squash, pumpkins and other gourds are prominent in the fall. The largest squash grown on record belonged to Joel Jarvis of Ontario, and his huge winner weighed in at 1,486.6 pounds in 2011.
9
The many-colored leaves are not the only display one might see during the fall. The autumn equinox signals the aurora borealis, also called the Northern Lights. Besides the lengthening of nights and cool evening weather, which are great for stargazers, autumn is “aurora season, according to NASA. That’s because, during the fall, geomagnetic storms are about twice as frequent as the annual average.
10
Full moons are named for the month or season in which they rise. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox.

Goochland defeats Central, remains undefeated By Weldon Bradshaw Contributing Writer
There it was, amidst the rain clouds, a brilliant, gorgeous double rainbow, a spectacular vision far off in the eastern sky. What an omen! Joe Fowler thought as he directed his Goochland Bulldogs through their warm-up 30 minutes before kickoff of
their game with Central-Lunenburg on Friday night. This is meant to be. I know it’s meant to be. Two hours later, shortly after his undefeated squad dispatched the Chargers 28-14, the image from that moment remained vivid in his mind. “It was sprinkling rain,” Fowler said, “and I saw the rainbow. I told one of the kids standing next to me,
‘It’s manifest destiny.’ Then I thought to myself, I hope he paid attention in history class and knew what manifest destiny meant. “He said, ‘You’re right, Coach.’” It was clear that the Bulldogs, 9-0 and tied for No. 10 in The TimesDispatch Top 10, also paid close attention to their preparation for the Chargers, whose six-game winning
streak they ended. They racked up 380 yards of offense, 336 with their potent ground game, and held the 6-2 Chargers, practitioners of the tough-to-defend double wing, to 168, evenly divided between the two halves. “We came out with intensity,” said Clay Brooks, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior defensive end. “Tonight, we
did a five-man front. The defensive ends would shoot in and try to spill the pullers. They’re power football. Our first priority was to stop the run.” After a 7-7 first quarter, the Bulldogs scored three times in the second, taking a 28-7 lead into halftime.

Briefs: Goochland alum named ECAC Def. Player of the Week By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
A former Goochland Bulldog was recently recognized for his stellar play. Nathan Adams of Gannon University was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18. Adams, a redshirt senior for the Golden Knights, had eight tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble during a 34-12 win over Seton Hill on Oct. 15. Of those eight tackles, four were for loss including in some very key situations for Gannon. One such time was when the Golden Knights led 10-3 and he tackled the ball carrier for a three-yard loss on a third-and-six play. He also sacked and forced a fumble of the Seton Hill quarterback late in the third quarter when Gannon was ahead by 11. Overall, Adams is the fourth leading tackler on the team this season with 54. He has 24 solo and 30 assisted tackles, with eight tackles for loss. The yardage lost on his tackles, 37, is the second best on the team. Adams also has three sacks, one fumble recovery and one interception. It is his first season at Gannon after transferring from Eastern Michigan. Adams played 10 games for

Eastern Michigan last season and had 36 tackles, including 10 against Louisiana State. Gannon University, which is located in Erie, Pa., is 4-4 this season. Adams was the state player of the year in 2012 and was a member of the Bulldogs state championship team.
GOLF Both of the female members of the Goochland golf team participated in the Central Zone Qualifier for the state championship match on Oct. 18. Junior Meghan Wright shot a 93 at Dogwood Trace Golf Course during the tournament and senior Riley Powers shot a 102. “Meghan and Riley both improved by a large margin from last season to this season,” Goochland golf coach AJ Nash wrote in an email. “Both players carded a birdie, something that not many players did.” For Powers, it was her last time golfing for the Bulldogs. “Riley has been a joy to have on the team over the last two years,” Nash wrote, “as her sportsmanship is second to none.” Nash wrote that Wright continues to improve for the team and hopes to see that progression continue going into the 2017 season. “If Meghan improves this offseason like she did last offMattox, a 6-1, 175-pound senior. “Soon as I got the ball, my running back, Calvin Martin, had a perfect block. Pushed the dude inside, so I had the perfect hole outside. If it wasn’t for perfect blocking, I wouldn’t have had the touchdown.”

season, I think we can expect scores in the high 30s and low 40s for nine holes, and scores right around 80 for 18 holes,” he wrote. The Bulldogs will return all of the starters for the team next season. “I’m really looking for a strong year for the golf team in
2017,” Nash wrote.
Marcus Burton scored on a 31-yard run 2:56 before halftime, the Bulldogs followed with a defensive stop at 0:37, and when conventional wisdom suggested running out the clock and going comfortably into the break, Mattox sprinted 42 yards for a score as
time expired. “Same exact play,” Mattox said. “We were hungry to get a nice W. We didn’t knee it. We wanted to go for a touchdown.” Midway through the final period, the Chargers mounted a drive that ended with a 17-
VOLLEYBALL The Goochland volleyball team grabbed two wins last week, one over Maggie Walker Governor’s School and Nottoway. “I feel overall, we played a more complete game against Nottoway than Maggie Walker,”
Bulldogs coach Jennifer Erixon wrote in an email. “For Maggie Walker, our defense was playing well, and we were serving aggressively, but we struggled to get a consistent offense going.” Goochland has only two games left in the season, one played on Oct. 24 against
Central Lunenburg and the second on Oct. 25. Erixon wrote that she hopes to get the offense going a little bit better prior to the playoffs beginning. “We need to clean up our free ball plays and we need to be smarter when we are attacking the ball,” she wrote.”
yard touchdown run at 3:43 by Malik Foster. Mattox alertly recovered the ensuing onside kick, and the Bulldogs, with their big guys up front clearing the way as they had all night, ran out the clock. “We run the ball a lot,”
senior guard Josh Clarke said. “Offensive linemen love to hit. When somebody’s in front of us, we do everything in our power to get ’em out of our way.” The Bulldogs travel to Bluestone for their next game on Oct. 28.

Trick-or-treating? Make sure to keep safety top of mind Following a few easy tips can make Halloween both fun and safe for kids
As thousands of children prepare to embark on their trick-or-treating jaunts in neighborhoods near and far, it is best to once again revisit safety tips that can help ensure this Halloween is enjoyable and injury-free.
