Chief tells supervisors help is needed sooner than expected due to shortage of volunteers By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Citing an unanticipated drop in volunteer staffing, Goochland County Fire Rescue Chief Bill MacKay asked county supervisors Nov. 1 to approve the hiring of four new paid staff members six months sooner than had been previously planned. According to MacKay, the county’s 10-year plan to gradually increase staffing among the county’s six firehouses had been based on levels remaining close to what they were in 2013, when the plan was adopted. Since then, however, the number of volunteers has see Ne w hires > 2 Photo by Roslyn Ryan

Winner bakes all By Roslyn Ryan Editor
P
lenty of people will tell you that they bake a mean apple pie. But few can back it up quite as well as Goochland resident Joyce
Clemmons. In fact, while the rest of the world was going bananas over the finale of the Presidential race this week, Clemmons was quietly savoring a much sweeter victory: On Oct. 29, she was once again named the winner of Goochland’s Best Apple Pie contest, held each year during
the county’s Fall Festival. Fun fact: Clemmons is the only repeat winner in the contest’s history. Actually, she is the only winner period. Out of the four years the county has been hosting the contest, Clemmons’ pies have been judged the best see Apple Pie > 8

New hires continued from >1 dropped 38.35 percent, from 412 to 336. Of those volunteers, MacKay explained to the board members, around half are not in positions that respond to calls. MacKay said that increasing the staffing would allow the department to place a 24hour paid unit in the eastern end of the county to help the current volunteers meet the needs of the community. Filling the positions will not cost the county any additional money, since there are currently several vacancies in the department. Earlier this year the FireRescue department and the County Administration each received letters from volunteer District Chiefs of Company 1
and 3 outlining their staffing challenges and asking the county to supplement their stations with career members. MacKay noted that the problems Goochland is having are not unique, and that departments across the Commonwealth — and across the nation — face similar staffing challenges. The goal, MacKay said, is to make sure the county can provide help for Goochland residents when an emergency strikes. “We want to make sure that when someone dials 911, someone is there who can answer that call,” he said. The board unanimously approved the request to hire new staff, which MacKay said could be on board by early 2017.

The Byrd Elementary School Dancin’ Dawgs Robotics Team earned rave reviews for a play they performed during a Nov. 5 competition at L.C. Byrd High School. The group also has been hard at work collecting money for the animal rescue group BARK.
Dancin’ Dawgs of BES doing their part to help area animals Team took part in robotics competition, put on original play Contributed report
The Dancin’ Dawgs of Byrd Elementary School competed with “coopertition” and gracious professionalism against other local robotics teams at L.C. Byrd High School in Chesterfield on Saturday, Nov. 5. This FIRST LEGO League Robotics team displayed the robot they built, ran the programs they had written to control their robot, and accomplished many animal-related missions as a part of the Animal Allies theme. Additionally, they put on a play written, produced, and performed by the Dancin’ Dawgs themselves. It told the story of a Labrador and a German Shepherd who were found roaming without a home. They were
brought to a place called BARK (Bandit’s Adoption and Rescue of K-9s) where they were passed on to a local prison and trained by inmates until they each received a Canine Good Citizenship Certificate. From there, the pair of pooches moved on to become service dogs after a long, expensive curriculum. The play was designed to offer a solution to the student researched problem of not enough service and therapy dogs. By having rescued dogs go through training with inmates, both dogs and inmates are offered a new purpose and alliance with benefits for the dogs, the offenders, and people who need a service dog. The presentation and the robot were both creative and well put together. However, what made this particular group of fourth and fifth graders exceptional is how they embraced their mission of helping dogs and cats in our local area. After meeting Bob Tillack from BARK and his
rescued dog Rambo, the team was determined to put their collective efforts to work. They made posters, distributed collection jars, wrote speeches to read on our public address system and even solicited the help of our librarian to call and email every parent with a child at Byrd. Their message was well received. This amazing community sent in coins by the bag-full and the team of 10 students collected more than $500 for animals in need. One fifth-grader even went so far as to ask friends and family to donate to BARK at her birthday party instead of gifts for her. All of the collected donations were given to BARK on Saturday, along with an honorary Byrd Robotics T-Shirt for Bob. The team is making a difference in their community. The students’ creativity, generosity, ingenuity, and sense of citizenship are inspiring, and the Dancin’ Dawgs have shown themselves to be top dog in compassion.

GFCFS urges those living with diabetes to keep healthy habits Organization using National Diabetes Month to educate, help patients set goals Contributed report
National Diabetes Month, observed every November, is an opportunity for individuals, health care professionals, organizations, and communities to work together to bring attention to diabetes and its impact on millions of Americans. This year, the National Diabetes Education Program’s theme is Managing Diabetes – It’s Not Easy, But It’s Worth It. This theme highlights the importance of managing diabetes to prevent diabetesrelated health problems such as heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, vision loss, and amputation. The theme also serves as a reminder to people who may
be struggling with the demands of managing diabetes that they are not alone. Having diabetes puts a person at an increased risk of complications such as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease, but it can also impact their oral health. Research shows that there is an increased prevalence of gum disease in patients who have diabetes. This relationship is actually a two-way street. People with diabetes are more susceptible to serious gum disease, but gum disease can also impact blood sugar control and contribute to the progression of diabetes. In general, diabetic patients are more susceptible to bacterial infections and have a decreased ability to fight bacteria. These infections also make blood sugars harder to control. Smoking increases the risk by twenty times higher for gum disease. Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) offers comprehensive dental
care and also has a Certified Diabetes Educator who meets with patients to help achieve diabetic goals. About 25 percent of GFCFS patients live with some form of diabetes. For those living with diabetes, the best thing to do to decrease the risk of oral health complications is to brush and floss properly at least twice a day, see a dentist for regular checkups, keep sugars under control, and quit smoking. Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services is a non-profit organization that provides access to health care and basic human services to Goochland residents in need. GFCFS is a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation supported by individuals, churches, corporations, grants, and businesses who share its vision. For more information, the public can visit www.GoochlandCares. org or find the organization on Facebook at www.facebook. com/gfcfs.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Regardless of election’s outcome, we shall all move forward together By Roslyn Ryan Editor
A
s I offer my thoughts in this column, which is being published the week of perhaps the most confoundingly bizarre yet crucially important Presidential election any of us have been alive to witness, I must offer a quick caveat: I don’t know how the story ends. As we mentioned last week, this issue of the Gazette was printed before the world received the election
results that have no doubt thrilled and devastated Americans in near equal measure (if the pre-election polling was to be believed). However, while I am not able to say just how I personally feel about the outcome, I thought it might be appropriate at this juncture to offer a few thoughts on the things that are the same today as they were before the final results were tallied, before we even knew who the candidates were going to be. In fact, I don’t think I am alone
in suggesting that there are plenty of things about this country that are eternally worth celebrating — things that have very little to do with who is behind the desk in the Oval Office. Even if your candidate didn’t win, you still woke up this morning in a nation that is a world leader in technology and innovation, a champion of tolerance, and a formidable defender of freedom and democracy around the world. No, we’re not perfect. But we’re trying. And if striving to do better
— and be better — isn’t the essence of what it means to be an American, then I’m not sure what is. We the People are still the people, and we are still good. Regardless of the political stances we take, we are committed to fairness, and to progress. As we move forward into this new world, here’s to hoping that we can all remember why we are proud to be Americans, and work together to preserve our legacy for the many generations that will come after us.
Looking back: Justice was the name of a horse By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I had to wake up early one morning for an assignment, and, as I prepared breakfast, I heard the National Anthem on the television. It brought back memories when stations would sign off each night, usually with flying jets, waving flags and playing the national anthem. It seems like Fox News has renewed the old tradition not of signing off, but playing the national anthem at 6 a.m. each morning.
The move should anger no one, but I would warn it might be too early for some patriots. Stations don’t sign off anymore, and cable television quickly transformed into 24-hour television. I kind of miss the sign off. Not because I don’t need the same story repeated several dozen times a day absent of new developments. No, It’s because I miss a certain old sign off called The Circuit Rider. I was never sure of the guy’s name but he rode a horse named Justice, who once was a prized racer

but now trotted daily for the Lord carrying the circuit rider to his next venue. Each evening, the circuit rider would remove his saddlebags and reveal the secret for that week. Sometimes the bag would show up in strange places and he would elaborate on its significance. Other times, it might be a unique item unknown to most of his viewers. The circuit rider was Reverend William Livermon, a Methodist minister from Cobbs Creek, Virginia, who modernized and
revived an old Methodist tradition of traveling preachers who traveled from congregation to congregation on a weathered old mare. He and his wife taped more than 60 segments that all began the same way. “Justice is the name of a grand old horse. Once he paced the racetrack but tonight he brings you a friend with a message.” The films were grainy and appeared vintage, but were actually shot on 8 mm by Livermon’s wife. see Justice > 7

Wedding
Jones and Haller united in marriage
R
achel Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Jones of Goochland, and Matthew Scott Haller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher H. Haller of Gum Spring, were united in marriage on Saturday, Sept. 3, at five o’clock in the evening. The ceremony was held on the lawn outside the lodge at Camp T. Brady Saunders in Maidens, with their pastor, Rev. Brian Seay officiating, assisted by Rev. Justin McClure (Rachel’s former youth pastor) and Christopher Robbins, Sr. (Matt’s former youth pastor). The wedding party entered to “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You” by Haley Reinhart. The bride and her father arrived at the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage, during which “Cinderella” (by Steven Curtis Chapman) was played. The bride walked down the aisle to “I Get to Love You” by Ruelle. During the ceremony, the bride and groom performed a ceremonial foot-washing to demonstrate Christ’s love for the
Church, during which Kameron Barton accompanied himself on the guitar and sang, “When I Say I Do” (by Matthew West). Given in marriage by her parents, the bride was attended by Miss Elizabeth Gill, Maid of Honor, Amber Chestnut, Autumn Chestnut, Abigail Higley, Allison Criss, Ashley Jones, Jessie Jones and Sarah Jones. Jake Short was best man. Groomsmen were Christopher Knight, Christopher Robbins, Jr., Theo Hodges, Ian Bates, Skylar St. Pierre, Colin Meador and Zack Jones. Conard Jones and Jonathan Jones were ushers. Miss Rylee Jones and Miss Lia Haller were flower girls. Conard Criss Jones and John Luke Jones were ring bearers. The bride wore an exquisite strapless ivory dress with champagne lace overlay adorned with Swarovski crystals. Her cathedral length veil was also edged in Swarovski crystals. The groom and groomsmen wore navy tuxedos by Michael Kors with ivory shirts.
Bridesmaids wore Jasmine Belsoie floor length chiffon and lace gowns in Berry. The bride and bridesmaids carried a bouquet of magnolias, hydrangeas, dahlias, peony, lotus and magnolia pods in vibrant fall colors. The wedding reception immediately followed inside the lodge, with dinner and dancing to music provided by Troy McClendon, owner of Quality Sights N Sounds. Dinner was catered by special friends Mike Gill, Mike Glave and Brandon Martin. The photographer was Ashley Duke, owner of Faith Photography and the wedding cake was created by Karen Wirsing, owner of The Cupcakery of Richmond, also very special friends. Following a honeymoon to the Outer Banks, the couple resides in Gum Spring. The bride and groom are 2016 graduates of Liberty University. The groom is employed by GNC, Inc. Apple Pie continued from >1 each and every time. And, as if that was not enough to secure her place in the pantheon of pie makers, this year Clemmons took second place as well (contestants were allowed to enter as many pies as they wanted to, provided the recipes were different). “I felt very honored, which I really want people to know,” Clemmons said, insisting that
she never expects to win. To be sure, hers is no overnight success story. As Clemmons tells it, crafting perfect pastry has been a part of her life for as long as she can remember. As a young girl living in rural Floyd County, “We grew up knowing that pies are a really critical part of entertaining,” Clemmons said. “When people would ask what kind of cakes we liked to make, we’d always say ‘none’ — we’ve always been a pie family.”
Clemmons says she learned the art from her grandmother, and still uses many of the same techniques to ensure her pies are second to none. “There’s a few little things you can do to make it different,” Clemmons explained — proper apple selection, for example, is absolutely crucial — but she coyly declined to elaborate much further. Clemmons did share that she culls most of her recipes from cookbooks, which she collects as a hobby and reads to relax, and that one key to her success has been making sure her creations look as good as they taste. To Manuel Alvarez, who helped judge the contest this year, Clemmons’ creations definitely have that certain something that sets them apart. “It is a blind test, so we are shown a pie and given a number and we grade based on
how it looks, the crust and the taste,” Alvarez said. “This year was especially difficult, because the pies were so good. But Mrs. Clemmons’ pies just seem to have all the sensory stimulants that make all the judges go ‘wow.’ Having met Mrs. Clemmons, I believe her main ingredient cannot be measured in cups or teaspoons — it’s just a whole lot of love.” This year Clemmons’ first place winner was a Harvest Apple pie. Her second place finish was for Caramel Apple. As to whether she wants another “bite of the apple,” as they say, when the 2017 contest rolls around, Clemmons laughed and said she expects to be there — probably. “It’s just one of the most fun things I’ve done,” she said. “But nobody ever knows what I’m going to do — I like to keep them guessing.”
Not ready to use those apples? These tips will help keep them fresh
A
pples are a popular fruit that are grown in different places around the world. Come autumn, apples can be seen filling farm stands and supermarkets all over North America. Apples are available year-round, but many apple lovers insist there’s nothing better than plucking an apple directly off the tree in the fall. Apple orchards and pick-your-own farms are visited each autumn by apple lovers anxious for apples’ tart and juicy taste. Many people pick more apples than they can eat in a few days, so it pays to learn how to store apples properly so none of them go to waste. Start by picking a variety of apple that won’t go bad too quickly. Apple growers can make suggestions, but Jonathan, Rome, Fuji, and Granny Smith varieties tend to last longer than other varieties. Goochland’s girls’ volleyball team, the defending Group 2A state champions, pose with the Conference 34 trophy. The conference title is the first step toward the Bulldogs’ attempt at retaining their state title.
Goochland cruises past Amelia for conference crown By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It is a path that is well worn in front of the Goochland Bulldogs girls volleyball team, a path familiar to many of the Bulldogs as they tread it last season. The path is, of course, the one to the state championship. The Group 2A defending champs made the first step toward a success-
ful defense of their crown with a 25-5, 25-14, 25-20 win over Amelia in the Quad Rivers Conference 34 title game. “It’s one step toward where their goal is,” Bulldogs coach Jennifer Erixon said. “And, they want to keep winning. We’re going to regionals and it’s just one game at a time…. just one game at a time, that’s all that we’re doing.” Goochland cruised in the first and
second sets against the Raiders. In the third set, Amelia was able to make some gains against the Bulldogs and one trend emerged that has been present in some Bulldogs games this season, where mistakes tend to pile up and starts a funk that Goochland needs to get out of. “We played very well up until that last game,” Erixon said. “That’s when we started to make mistake, after mistake, after mistake and we
couldn’t get past it. But, other than that, we played pretty well. We served aggressively and our passes were on point.” In the conference win against Amelia, Maddie Goff had 10 kills and 10 digs, while Kealie Lchniet had nine kills and seven digs. Alexis Wiggins added four blocks and an ace. Wiggins, Casey Spencer, Goff and Trinity Wonderling each had stellar games from the service line with a
100-percent serve rate. The road to the conference final was anything but easy, however, as Goochland had to battle against Nottoway, going five sets before the Bulldogs pulled out the victory. Erixon said that the test that Nottoway put up against Goochland was almost a blessing in disguise.

Brooks brothers making waves on defense By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Goochland has its own set of Brooks Brothers and they are making more than a fashion statement on the Bulldogs’ defensive side of the ball. As the team completes its first undefeated season since 2011, Clay and younger brother Sam lead the team in tackles and have played a key role in the team’s success. The brothers ended the season with Sam recording 60 tackles and Clay adding another 59, good enough to lead all defensive players on a team that prides itself on stopping its opponent. For the two Goochland natives it’s a first time experience that highlights a bond between the two and a love for the game they play so intently. Sam, 15, and Clay, 17, are playing on their first varsity teams and are enjoying their first year in public school after being home schooled for the majority of their previous years. Even with the lack of previous play, the two realize the importance of navigating an

entire season without a loss. “So far, it’s been a great season, but we know it’s going to get more difficult as the competition gets better in the playoffs,” linebacker Sam said. “We really haven’t had a close game all year. We have to be prepared for anything.” For defensive end Clay, it’s a senior season that he will remember. “It’s been very exciting coming out and being able to win all of these games,” he said. “It’s a real challenge to know that is we keep winning, we keep playing. I just want to keep playing hard.” After years of home schooling, the experience of varsity football is somewhat of a gift for the senior. “This is really a blessing right now. I’m grateful for the whole team and the hard work we’ve put in to make this a great senior year,” Clay said. Sam began his football career in the summer with few expectations. “I didn’t know what to expect and I didn’t know what kind of team we had,” Sam said. “Being able to play with Clay has been a great experience.” Sam knows starting on
quarterfinals. The game occurred after the deadline for this edition. If the Bulldogs defeat Maggie Walker, they will play on Nov. 10 at home against the winner of Buffalo Gap and Clarke County. If the Bulldogs advance to the region final, it would take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, and would be a road trip to a top bracket school, which would either be Bruton, Amelia, George Mason or Robert E. Lee.
defense with Clay is a rare sibling experience, and he doesn’t discount its importance. “It’s great being on the same side of the ball on every play,” Sam said. “It’s not something many people get to experience.” Clay also appreciates the unique situation. “It’s great. He literally has my back playing right behind me. I always tell people Sam is like a brother to me and he really is,” he said. It’s the first time the two have played on the same team, but not the first time they’ve interacted on the football field. “We played in the backyard plenty,” Clay said. When the two aren’t playing or practicing football, chances are you’ll find them in front of the television watching college football. “We spend our Saturdays watching college football and we love that.” In actuality, the family is the Brooks Brothers plus three. The two have an older brother and two younger sisters. Both defensive players say they appreciate that the team has accepted them as first timers, and they are forming
Erixon said that her team knows what they need to do to be successful in region play. “We’ve got to get past Maggie Walker, but it’s really hard to beat a team three times in one season,” she said. “I have a positive outlook for regionals. If we get past next Thursday, it’s a breath of fresh air to qualify for states.” Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com or on Twitter @BillyFellin.
relationships that will last a lifetime. “It’s our first year knowing any of these guys and we’ve gotten along without a hitch,” Clay said. “It’s like we’ve known each other for a long, long, time.” The feeling is obviously mutual witnessed by the fact Clay’s classmates honored him with their selection of him as this year’s Homecoming King. The Brooks, along with their Bulldog band of brothers will begin post-season play this week with a home game against Washington and Lee. And Coach Joe Fowler is happy to have the pair of Brooks in his corner. “Clay and Sam are two of the nicest young men you will ever meet,” Fowler said. “ They have been a blessing to our school and our team. The fact that they are great football players is just an added bonus.” Offenses who face the two quickly realize a kind and quiet attitude does not equate to an easy opponent, and Clay and Sam do their talking on the field with their play. “They are a huge part of

our success on defense,” Fowler said. “Clay brings a physical presence to our defense and has such a high motor.” And the thought of having the younger Brooks for two more years brings a smile to Fowler’s face.
“Sam might be the best athlete in our school. He has an explosiveness that not many kids possess. By the time he is a senior, it is scary to imagine the type of player he is going to develop into.”

Apples can last a couple of months if stored in this manner. Keep apples away from potatoes, as potatoes can cause the fruit to prematurely decay. Another way to store apples is to turn them into preserves or apple sauce. By boiling the apples and sealing them shut in canning jars, that

fresh apple taste can be enjoyed long after the apples are picked. Consult with a canning expert about the right way to begin the process. Fruits are generally canned using a boilingwater canner. However, some fruits, like apples, can be canned with a pressure canner. Because apples tend to discolor when the flesh meets the air, use a little lemon juice to prevent this while canning. Turning apples into candied apples also can help them keep longer. Apples can be dipped into a sugary coating, caramel or toffee to be enjoyed later on. Of course, you always can bake apples into a pie as well, then freeze the pie for another day. —MetroCreative
