After demolition of iconic structures, residents could see more changes ahead By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland resident Robert Fuller, didn’t see the two, stately old silos come crashing to the ground in the early afternoon hours of Sept. 12, but he knew without a doubt that they had fallen.
He had just returned home after investigating why a worker was pulling down the structures, which were located near the Patterson Ave. and 288 interchange, just across from the home Fuller, a retired postal worker, shares with his wife Lynne. “I was getting out of the truck when I heard the ‘boom,’” he said. “I heard them hit the ground.” By the end of the afternoon, both silos were gone, as was the barn they were attached to, and with them a bucolic vignette that many, like the Fullers, had considered to be a daily reminder of Goochland’s rural heritage.
According to Tommy Pruitt, whose company, PWC Properties, LLC, owns the land on which the silos stood, the buildings had become a magnet for trespassers over the years, and been vandalized numerous times. “It had just become a bad situation,” Pruitt said, and demolishing the buildings was the best way they could think of to fix it. While drivers and area residents may pine for the loss of the silos, it’s the future plans for the rest of the property that have caused the most concern. see Silos > 2

Creek Business Park, a development also owned by the company. According to a letter that the Fullers received on Oct. 11, the move would pave the way for construction of a 60acre retail and multifamily development on the property. The project will feature restaurants, a grocery store, and retail shops. “We have concluded that a retail development at Patterson Ave. and Route 288 will bolster the ability for West Creek to recruit new businesses to the park, thereby fostering increased economic development with a corresponding increase in real estate revenue to the County,” the letter stated. A community meeting held on Oct. 26, during which representatives from PWC presented their plan and took questions from residents, drew around 60 people, many of whom expressed concerns about potential retail development on land they were once told would be used only for light industrial operations and office parks. Should the project get a stamp of approval from the Planning Commission on Dec. 1, the next step would be for the Board of Supervisors to take up the issue at its Jan. 3 meeting. No matter what the final outcome of the decision, any development that is created along that stretch of Route 288 won’t offer much comfort to those who miss the silos. Goochland resident Judi Reid said she still recalls the particular way the structures looked when she happened to be driving home from Richmond in the afternoon. “The sunlight would just shine on them,” she remembered. “It was so beautiful.”

BESSIE H. BERGUIN Bessie Hope Berguin, a longtime resident of Lakeside and cherished sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died peacefully at her home at the age of 100. Born Bessie Gray Hope at Offley Mills, a farm overlooking the South Anna River in Hanover County, she was one of seven children of John Fleming Hope Jr. and Olive Mozelle Hope. They moved to Goochland in 1922, where she spent much of her childhood, and later had strong family ties to “Belfast Farm” in Berguin Bumpass with its Revolutionary War-era house. The farm has long been the scene of sizable family reunions. She married John Raymond Berguin, originally from Oral in the Black Hills of South Dakota, on April 17, 1938. He was an electrical engineer who fell in love with the Richmond area -- as well as Bessie -- and the couple settled in Lakeside. She was to live in their Irisdale Avenue home for more than 70 years and was a member of Emanuel Episcopal Church. Mrs. Berguin was a graduate of Goochland High School. She worked for the Henrico County Real Estate Department for many years before retiring. Known for her quick wit and friendly attitude, she was honored as Outstanding Employee by the county. Along with her husband, she was an avid golfer, a fearsome croquet player and bridge player, as well as accomplished artist and prolific letter writer. They were married for almost 57 years before his death in April, 1995. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Election marks new start — for all of us By Roslyn Ryan Editor
And so it ends. As I have to tell absolutely no one, the Election of 2016 is now in the books, and the results were of the sort that might not even make the final edit of a reality show — with so many ups and downs, twists and turns, no one would likely believe it. I will certainly be the first to admit that I was wrong, both about Donald Trump’s desire to be President (I was sure it was a publicity stunt), and the feasibility of it actually happening. It isn’t the first time I’ve had to eat my proverbial hat. I doubt it will be the last.
I also will admit that the ending, when it came, was how I would have written it. As the days since the election have passed, I, along with millions of Americans, have spent countless hours thinking about this new reality we face. Some of us, to be sure, are thrilled. Others, many of whom can be seen nightly marching in the street, feel angry and betrayed. But now, after a campaign season that saw a vast majority of Americans divided into two distinct teams, it seems a third group has emerged. We — and there seem to be more of us coming around every day —could perhaps best be described as the heartbroken yet hopeful, those of us who recognize
that the finale of this election, while not the one we wanted, is still a new beginning. And every new beginning brings with it the possibility that something truly wonderful can happen. Yes, many of us are deeply disappointed. But we also know that this is how democracy works, and that there is no other system in the world under which we would want to live. No, you will not convince many of us that Donald Trump is a great man. He’ll have to prove it. But it has been inspiring in recent days to witness so many of his opponent’s supporters, even after such a brutal and divisive race, standing up to say that he deserves the chance to do
just that. As we move forward, I am hopeful that our country will continue to come together and begin to remember once again what make us a truly great nation. Democracy can be messy, as we’ve just seen, but the sooner we start dusting ourselves off and getting on with things, the better for all. As for Mr. Trump, this hardearned victory is only the beginning of what promises to be a long and difficult journey, during which he will have to make good on his promises to the American people. He has been given the highest honor we have to give. It’s up to him to prove he’s worthy of it. We’ll all be watching.
A long-delayed ‘thank you’ to those who served By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I’ve attended dozens of Veteran’s Day events in the past two decades, all of them meaningful and somber with well intentioned appreciation displayed for the men and women who serve our nation in uniform. But this year’s usual and almost predictable assignment provided a special message for the hundreds who attended, and even more specifically to the reporter who cov-
ered it. A steady line of Vietnam veterans made their way to the podium to receive a proclamation of appreciation and special Congressional pin denoting their service in Southeast Asia. Some limped and others needed assistance as they came forward to claim the appreciation that many of them think is long overdue. Throughout numerous American wars and conflicts, one thing remains constant as men and

women shed blood on foreign soil to protect our freedom at home. The ties that bind are the stories of the men and women who served, the soldiers’ stories that live in their minds for a lifetime. For many, time served with comrades in arms is a defining period in their lives, a period where lasting friendships were formed and hopes were often dashed. It was true for the GI trudging through the frozen forests of Europe during World War II, or the
men caught hopelessly between a rock and a hard place in Korea. It also was present in Vietnam, where men and women fought through enemy-infested jungles and boobytrapped deltas searching for an enemy intent on destroying them. As a nation, we don’t pick our heroes or what circumstances produce the selfless courage it takes to put on a uniform and walk into harm’s way on a daily basis. see Ridolphi > 7

Letters to the Editor Election Day was successful thanks to county’s volunteers Dear Editor, The results of the General Election are in and Goochland’s turnout was 85.2 percent of active voters, substantially ahead of the statewide average and certainly among the top jurisdictions across the Commonwealth. President-Elect Donald Trump carried Goochland with 59.2 percent of the vote. Secretary Hillary Clinton received 34.5 percent. Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Caudill won 71.4 percent. The operation of our polling places went smoothly and it is a tribute to the extraordinary goodwill, discipline, integrity and devotion of our Officers of Election who put in a 16 to 18-hour day to ensure our voting was fair, open, transparent and successful. As Thanksgiving Day nears, please remember your neighbors whose devotion to democracy made this possible. Others saw the returning veterans as a reminder of political miscues and a misguided mission that forever stained our national image in the eyes of some. In the Goochland County administration we had unstinting help from dedicated staff in the IT department and the Department of Buildings and Grounds who prepared the polling places for voters. Throughout the year the Board of Supervisors and County Administrators have provided the financial and material support essential to an efficient operation. They all deserve our thanks. The Goochland Sheriff ’s Department provided unobtrusive but dependable and reassuring security through the day for which we were
obeying orders. They were caught in a hopeless crossfire from home and in the theatre that provided no viable escape. So, they returned and picked up their lives as best they could, placing medals and patches in boxes for permanent storage, rarely sharing their war stories with interested neighbors or never hearing the words “Thank you for your service. I spoke to one of those Vietnam veterans following the ceremony who did not opt to receive the special recognition of his peers and soldiers in arms. “I felt like America slapped me in the face when I came home from Vietnam. It’s a feeling that never has gone away, a feeling of guilt and almost humiliation, he said. His crystal blue eyes told the story of a man who had seen the horror of war, the sacrifice of friends and the
unspeakable misery of battle and had faced the aftermath alone and isolated. “For a long period, I never told anyone that I served. I felt guilty for serving.â€? As I gathered my supplies and prepared to leave, I saw the man standing in an Army colored P-coat, standing away from the crowd, alone in thought. I made my way through the groups of people that mingle after each and every memorial ceremony, and I reached out my hand and spoke words to this man that probably no one had ever said in his presence. “Thank you for your service, sir. Welcome home.â€? It’s never too late for a nation to recognize its heroes, and for the thousands of men and women who served in Vietnam, and it’s never too late to come home ‌ to a grateful nation.

that a new spirit of forgiveness, caring and honesty be born in our nation; May we, as a united people, move with clear, directed purpose to take our place within the community of nations to help build a better future for all humankind; And may we as a nation rededicate ourselves to truly living as one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Jacqueline Pogue Goochland

Annual stew sale went off without a hitch once again Dear Editor, For the 10th year in a row, Crozier Company 2 Auxiliary had its primary fundraiser for its fire company, the Brunswick Stew and Bake Sale. Once again we must thank all the people who helped make this one of our best and most profitable ever. With the help of neighbors and friends, the hard-working Auxiliary, under the leadership of Stewmaster Lloyd Minter, made 907 quarts of Brunswick Stew--and we sold them all! I would like to thank Tyler Hollender and Enzo’s for procuring all of our vegetables for us; St. Matthew’s Church for lending us their pots; the Boy Scout Camp for allowing us to cook and debone 464 pounds of chicken; Tanglewood Ordinary Restaurant for donating all the corn bread to go with the stew; and our friends and families who donated all the goodies for the bake sale table. A special shout out to our neighbors who helped stir all the pots for six hours. We couldn’t have done it without you! Many thanks! Ann O. Casey President, Co. 2 Auxiliary

Goochland cruises in playoff opener with 49-7 win By Jim Ridolphi Contribting Writer
Goochland glided through its opening round of the Region 2A East playoffs last week with a 49-7 thumping of visiting Washington and Lee. The Bulldogs entered the contest with a defense that had produced four previous shootouts and held opposing offenses to a stingy 7.8 points. Those numbers will only improve with the team’s 11th victory of the 2016 season, ensuring a match with Strasburg next week as the playoffs continue on Bulldog home turf. For the 4-7 Eagles, the task seemed almost insurmountable from the beginning as the Montrose based squad dressed 24 players for the game. “We did a lot of good things, but honestly it was tough to judge how we played,” coach Joe Fowler said after the win. “W&L was missing some key players and they were overmatched, so I don’t know if we
played well or if our success was just a reflection of our opponent.” And the trouble started early for Eagles quarterback Carson Bell. On his first pass from scrimmage, Cole Nuckols made a leaping interception and set up the Bulldogs for an opening drive that set an ominous tone for the Eagles. Marcus Burton scored from eight yards out to begin a first half scoring barrage that produced 42 points. On the ensuing possession, the Bulldogs got their second pick of the young game when Devin McCray nabbed the next Bell pass and returned it to W&L 32 yard line. Jasper Carter covered the final five yards to make the score 14-0, midway through the first quarter. The Eagles tried to cross things up on their next possession but a quick kick turned sour when the Bulldogs rush smothered the punter and produced another turnover deep in W&L territory. Cordell Mattox completed that

Alexis Wiggins (13) sends a tip over the net against Buffalo Gap in region play.
It isn’t often that the Goochland Bulldogs volleyball team isn’t victorious on home court. But, that wasn’t the case in the Group 2A East region semifinal game between the Bulldogs and Buffalo Gap on Nov. 10 as Buffalo Gap defeated Goochland 25-14, 24-26, 25-23, 25-18. “There were times when I thought we could definitely win,” coach Jennifer Erixon said. “Going into this game, I felt confident. The first set didn’t start off well with an out-of-rotation call, a bad pass and we just made mistake after mistake. They just couldn’t get out of their
funk.” Buffalo Gap rushed out to a 7-1 lead in the first set and didn’t look back, even as the Bulldogs attempted to make a comeback. Goochland came out much stronger in set two, rushing out to a 6-2 lead, but the Bison were able to come back and tie at 10-10. From there, it was back-andforth the rest of the set, with no team getting more than a twopoint lead until the Bison went ahead 22-20. Buffalo Gap would get to set point at 24-22, which forced a Goochland timeout. The timeout gave the Bulldogs new life as they scored four points in a row, two of which came from Alexis Wiggins
and Goochland took the set. The third set was similar to the second, as the teams went backand-forth until Goochland took the lead at 13-12, and then built themselves a bit of a lead. But, the Bison came back to tie the game and eventually built a lead of their own to 24-21. Once again Goochland was able to push them to two set points after a Trinity Wonderling ace. Unfortunately, a service error gave the set to the Bison and the Bulldogs were in a hole. A six-point run in the fourth set doomed Goochland to a 3-1 loss in the regional semifinal, one

Three Bulldog athletes sign NLIs By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It was a very special day for three Goochland Bulldogs athletes on Nov. 9. In front of family and friends that packed the cafeteria at Goochland High School, softball players Sarah Ramsbottom and Kailyn Spencer as well as two-time individual Group 2A state tennis champion Chase Bernstein signed their National Letters of Intent to where they will be playing sports at the collegiate level. Ramsbottom will be going to Presbyterian College, Spencer will head to UVAWise and Bernstein will attend Virginia Tech. For Ramsbottom, she will head to the Big South

Football continued from >11 drive with a nine-yard sweep to the end zone. Calvin Martin scored next early in the second period when he scampered for 31 yards to make the score 280 with 10:50 remaining in the half. John King gathered in a 17 yard pass from Tanner Bradshaw to put the Bulldogs up 35-0, and Burton ended the first half where he started, standing in the end zone after a 22-yard sprint to pay
Conference and join the Blue Hose. “I’m so excited,” she said. “I really felt at home on campus and I really like the coaches. They made me feel like they really wanted me. I like the location.” Ramsbottom said that she was considering “a few other schools,” but she knew she wanted to head south. But, Presbyterian showed the most interest in her and they will get her ability on the diamond for four years. Ramsbottom’s bat and her glove will boost the Blue Hose on offense and defense. The team went 25-28 last season. In the classroom, Ramsbottom said that she wants to study political science. Spencer, the pitching work-
horse for the Bulldogs, will become a Cavalier next year. “I’m really excited,” she said. “I love the area, I love the community. It reminds me a lot of Goochland. I’m excited.” Spencer got looks from Mount Olive and “a few others” and she said she wants to become an elementary school teacher. The Cavaliers were 28-30 last season. Bernstein was named as the All-Metro player of the year after continuing his undefeated streak in high school play. In addition to his second singles title in Group 2A, he won the doubles state title in 2016 as well with younger brother Ryan. “I’m excited, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” he said. “I’ve been going to

accuracy on her hits, were tough tasks for Goochland. Tip coverage was also an Achilles’ heel that the Bison exploited. “Unfortunately, we’re not as tall as we were last year,” Erixon said. “Our blocking power wasn’t there. Even
though we have a very strong defense, there’s only so much they can do when they’re up against two dynamic middle hitters that can go anywhere.” While the result was not what the team envisioned for their season, almost entire
Bulldogs team will return next season, with another year of experience under their belts that will no doubt pay dividends. Libero Casey Spencer is the lone senior for the Bulldogs that will not be in red and gold next season.
Erixon said that she will remember the 2016 team as a scrappy team that was incredibly mentally tough. “They let absolutely nothing drop,” Erixon said. “They never got down on themselves, they never gave up and are very mentally
tough. Looking ahead, we have everyone coming back except Casey. We just have to put in some work in the offseason and come back ready to play again.” Billy Fellin can be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com.
dirt to end the half with his team enjoying a 42-0 lead. Although Bradshaw’s passing attempts are limited, the aerial element of the Bulldog attack is headed in the right direction, according to Fowler. “We are getting better each week. Tanner threw some nice balls Friday and it is something that we need to keep improving on a weekly basis,” the coach said. Fowler utilized a number of reserves in the second half, and the second and third string performed well
against the Eagles. Perry Snead-Johnson ground out two third quarter yards to produce the Bulldogs’ final score of the evening, and Eagles quarterback Corbin Bell dove one yard for a fourth quarter score to avoid what was, for all intent and purposes, a shutout. Fowler knows the challenge increases with each week, as teams step up the competition level as they travel to Goochland for at least another week. Strasburg defeated King
William to earn another shot at the Bulldogs, a victim of the Rams in three past playoff match ups. But, that was then, and Fowler said this team is special and more than ready for the challenge that Strasburg presents. “This is such a great group of kids. They have stuck together and supported one another all season,” Fowler said. “Everybody has bought into their role on the team whether it is as high profile starter, a role player who focuses on special teams, or a
scout team players who helps the starters get ready for the opponents. I think that has been the biggest key to our success.” He’s also realistic when sizing up next week’s opponent who comes to town with a recent victory over their biggest rival, Woodstock. “Strasburg is big and physical. They don’t have a lot of kids, but the ones they do have are strong,” Fowler said. “They are going to line up and try to run right at us and then mix in some play action and drop back
passing. Defensively they have been great at times this year.” Goochland will be going through its normal schedule as Friday’s round two game approaches. “We are just sticking with our normal routine.,” Fowler said. “We feel like the kids like consistency and we don’t want to change up the recipe that got us to this point this year and in years past. “But, our kids know that each week, we need to play better because we are facing better teams.”

Vice Chair of the county’s Republican party, Trump’s victory means a new beginning for the United States. “My first sense when the win was secured was ‘Thank God we have another chance to not lose our country after all!’” Bishop said. “We won’t see the destruction of the second amendment. Pro-Life struggles and religious freedom will endure for an extended season and the Supreme Court will regain a few constitutionally minded jurists.” Bishop said he knows Trump will make mistakes along the way, but thinks he will ultimately accomplish his mission to “make America great again.”
