Peterson continued from >1 States Army for five years, including being stationed on the European border with the former Soviet Union during the Cold War. “Military veterans bring a unique perspective to elected office,” said Wadle. “They have a servant’s heart, having sacrificed much in service to their country protecting our freedom back home. I’ve known Ken for years. It’s that innate sense of public service from his time in the Army that drew him to later serving on the Goochland Board of Supervisors to help right the county’s financial situation. I’m supporting Ken because I know he will bring much-needed perspective, guidance, and fresh ideas to the Virginia legislature.” Wadle will lead delegate recruitment efforts for military veterans interested in supporting Peterson’s campaign by serving as a delegate to the district conven-

tion or in other volunteer capacities. Peterson was elected to the Goochland County Board of Supervisors in November 2011, and served as Chairman in 2013. He won reelection without opposition in 2015. Peterson said he was drawn to run for the board of supervisors when, as a resident of Goochland, he learned the county was in deep financial trouble. Upon being elected, Peterson spearheaded several initiatives designed to address the myriad of financial woes facing the county. He headed a debt restructuring group formed to refinance the county’s service district debt which saved the county millions of dollars and kept property taxes at their current level, significantly lower than surrounding counties. Peterson also headed a credit rating group which earned the coveted AAA rating for the county for the first time. During Peterson’s time on the board, the county has passed balanced budgets on time every year, kept property tax rates low and steady, and finished each year with a budget surplus. Following the completion of active duty, Peterson earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University. Peterson has had a successful career in the private sector as a corporate finance professional. He currently manages a private investment operation in Virginia.

To Master of the Lodge Lee Crumpler, who presented the 18-year veteran with the award, the importance of the work Witt and her fellow dispatchers do cannot be overstated. A dispatcher, “is the one person who is our lifeline,” said Crumpler, a former Virginia State Trooper. “She or he can be the difference between life, injury and death to those of us on the street.” Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew said after the ceremony that couldn’t have agreed more with the selection of Witt as Dispatcher of the Year. “She deserves this,” he said. Agnew also offered a telling anecdote about Witt, one he said helped sum up her
four separate phone lines and fielding calls about every imaginable emergency, from medical crises, to car accidents, to house fires. The job requires tremendous patience, Witt said, and the ability to prioritize and make decisions in an instant. A person calling in to report a non life-threatening situation, for example, may have to wait. While she admits to getting stressed like any other person, Witt said last week that the relationship she shares with her coworkers makes the difference. “It really is a family here,” she said. “I can’t imagine going anywhere else.” *** The 2016 Outstanding FireFighters, Rescue Personnel, and law enforcement officers honored on Public Safety Night were: Manakin Company 1 James Walker Barbara Walker

approach to the job. “It was during the earthquake,” said Agnew, referring to the 2011 5.8 quake centered in Louisa that violently shook surrounding counties, including Goochland. Agnew said anyone who saw the video of Witt and her colleagues that day would have witnessed her resolutely refusing to leave her desk, which she would eventually crawl under so that she could continue taking calls. “She just kept saying ‘We are the link! We have to stay here!’” Agnew remembered. “She was awesome.” To Witt, who came to the Goochland Sheriff ’s Department after a stint with Richmond Alarm Company, working as a dispatcher is more of a calling than a job. “I really love to interact with people, and I love helping people,” she said, though she admitted that the job is not without some intense challenges. The support we offer neighbors in need
Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services (GFCFS) was recently designated a Service Enterprise by the Points of Light Foundation. A Service Enterprise is “an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills across all levels of the organization to successfully deliver on its social mission.” Only 15 percent of non-profits nationwide achieve the Service Enterprise designation. As part of this national recognition, the Presidential Service Award was awarded to thirty-seven volunteers who each volunteered over 100 hours at GFCFS. Together these dedicated volunteers contributed more than 6,000 hours in 2015. Here, GFCFS executive director Sally Graham and Liz Rider, president of the Board of Directors, celebrate their Service Enterprise designation.
Memorial continued from >3 support from church members, who purchased over 70 bricks in memory of someone who had served. What many might find surprising, however, are a few of the heroes honored on those bricks. According to Linda Uloth, who spearheaded the project in honor of her late husband Larry, who passed away on Dec. 30, 2014, the memorial
includes the name of famed politician and orator Patrick Henry, whose direct descendant is a member at Byrd, as well as the name of a patriot who served in the Continental Congress. Also included on the list are Silver and Bronze star recipients, members of the Army Air Corp, and the name of a soldier who was declared Missing in Action during the Vietnam War. “I just think it is the most awesome thing, that we have all of those names here at our little church,” Uloth said,
Goochland is a community that cares. We care about each other. We care about our county. We care about our pets. Thanks to an innovative public-private partnership, a new non-profit, Goochland Pet Lovers, has been formed. The new board has 18 members. The officers are Chairman, Tom Winfree, Vice-Chairman Cathy Minnick, Secretary Sara Grattan and Treasurer Bob Tillack. Wayne Dementi will serve as its first President/CEO. Goochland Pet Lovers is dedicated to fundraising and friend-raising in support of providing the very best adoption and rescue experience for both pets-in-need and the community through a new partnership with Goochland County. Currently, the county’s dated and deteriorated animal shelter is not in compliance with state law. In spite of the challenges of the inadequate space, the statistics tell a promising story. In short, our animal control officers and our community care about finding homes for adoptable animals in Goochland. In 2015, of 302 dogs taken into the shelter, 113 were adopted (37 percent, up from 19 percent in 2013). Of 167 cats brought into the shelter, 70 were adopted (42

Uloth explained that after her husband died, she had requested that a flagpole be put up in his honor. percent). Our current capacity at the existing shelter for cats and dogs is only 120. The group is happy to report that an exciting initiative is underway that will create a new era for pets awaiting adoptions and those looking to adopt. The Goochland County Board of Supervisors is undertaking the construction of a new animal shelter on the existing site. Goochland Pet Lovers will spearhead a campaign to raise the necessary funding to complete the project. The end result will be a state-of-the-art, welcoming Adoption, Care and Education Center. The current facility is cramped at 2,130 square feet. The new facility will be spacious, light and airy at 12,900 square feet. The center will have designated areas where pets can become acclimated to their environment, allowing the staff to learn about the animal and its temperament. There will be a training area where both volunteers and owners will learn how to work on behavior modification techniques and basic training that will ensure the pet’s success transitioning to a new home. There will be a spay/neuter operating area to care for rescued pets. There will also be a warm, inviting bathing and grooming area. A separate area will be designated for large animals, and there will be outside exercise areas. The center will have a separate intake area so strays and incoming pets will not interact with the established residents, thereby preventing the spread of disease.
plied the flag pole, it soon became known informally as the church’s Veteran’s Memorial. But it wasn’t until another Byrd member, Jonni Farish, lost her husband John last May, that the idea for a full-fledged memorial began to take shape. Farish requested that, in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to the Byrd Presbyterian Church Veterans Memorial. “And so the idea grew and we knew we wanted to do more to honor

our veterans,” Farish said. After a year of careful planning, the new Byrd Presbyterian Veterans Memorial was dedicated during a special ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 13. Uloth said they plan to expand it in the future, adding more bricks and eventually a meditation bench. “It’s really been an honor to do it, and it was such a wonderful thing we could do for all of our veterans,” she said. “And I know my husband would be so happy.”

MSWCD unveils new signage to help keep local water clean Contributed report
Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District, in partnership with the Middle James Roundtable, is installing signage around the county to highlight the practice of stream exclusion. Eligible farmers may apply for this and other signs denoting best management practices within the Virginia Agricultural Cost Share Program (VACS) through their local soil and water conservation district. Monacan District encompasses Goochland and Powhatan counties. A watershed roundtable consists of stakeholders who have a vested interest in their community and are concerned about local water quality. The territory of the Middle James River ranges from part of Greene County to a small portion of Bedford through Prince Edward and Chesterfield into Henrico and back along I-64 to Greene. This area includes
a population of 1.5 million Virginians. The Middle James Roundtable is made up of a steering and executive committee. The steering committee involves participants from a wide range of interests, including elected officials, local government staff, the agricultural community, businesses, developers, environmental groups, and interested citizens. Information about activities is available at www.mjrt.org as well as the MJRT Facebook page.
Clean water is key to maintaining a high quality of life in Virginia. Through involvement in the MJRT, participants work together to ensure clean water for drinking, business and recreation. These signs are an example of how the Roundtable and the District are promoting positive strides made by our local farmers to improve water quality. For more information about Districts, the VACS program or the MJRT, please call the Monacan office at (804)556-4936.

On eve of Thanksgiving, a few open letters By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Dear Pinterest, First of all, I would like to make sure that you understand how very hard this is for me to write. You and I have been hanging out for awhile now, and we’ve been through a lot. There have been some great times (remember the super awesome baby shower cupcakes with the diaper pin ornaments on top? So cute!) and some not-sogreat ones (those fun and festive centerpieces that turned out to be less fun and more flammable than we thought). But the truth is, when it comes
to the holidays, I think I really need to go it alone this year. So, Pinterest, it is with a heavy heart that I am disinviting you to my Thanksgiving celebration. I know you’ve probably been waiting the entire year to share the 37 new ways I can incorporate figs into my tablescape, or your novel ideas for turning one big pie into a bunch of tiny, bite-sized pies. You may even have a gluten-free stuffing recipe this year that you say won’t make everyone want to barf. Even though it will. And we both know it. Sadly, I’m just no longer willing to be the frantic, disheveled woman pacing the aisles of my local craft store on the night before Thanksgiving,

Goochland takes down Strasburg, Clarke County next By Jim Ridolphi Contribting Writer
This coming Thursday will find many of us sitting at home, enjoying family and a plateful of turkey and dressing and watching football on television. While most area teams are hanging helmets on hooks and stacking uniforms for off season
storage, the Bulldogs will be practicing on Thanksgiving. One might think that’s a tough assignment for a group of high school players, but, truth is, there’s no where else they’d rather be at this time of year. “For any high school player or coach who has ever had the opportunity to practice on Thanksgiving, it’s a wonderful thing,” Goochland head coach Joe Fowler said after last
week’s second round victory. “It’s great to come out here and practice with your team and practice early in the morning and then go home and spend time with your family. I’m thrilled these kids get this opportunity because the second round has been a roadblock for us and to get over that hump is nice.” After two years of second round
losses, the Bulldogs cleared that hurdle last week with a 35-13 victory over Strasburg in the Region 2A East playoffs. The visitors didn’t go down easily, and, undermanned and deleted due to injuries, provided the Bulldogs with their toughest test in weeks in a game that was closer than the final score indicated. In typical Bulldog fashion,
Goochland started fast and showed the Rams their signature running game on the first drive. After Marcus Burton ripped off a big run to set the Bulldogs up in Ram territory, Calvin Martin covered the final 28 yards with a stubborn, determined run. Goochland’s defense provided a late first quarter spark by shutting

Benedictine falls to Collegiate in VISAA championship game 22-14 By Eric Kolenich Richmond Times-Dispatch
Benedictine’s hope for a third consecutive state football championship was dashed Saturday by Collegiate, its dynamic passing attack, its longrange kicker and its stifling defense. The Cadets fell 22-14 to Collegiate on Saturday in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state title game. Their offense struggled to move the ball for most of the first three quarters. Then Andrew Puccinelli completed a big pass to Taurus Carroll, and Cadets (7-3) were right back in the game. Puccinelli found Carroll open on the right side of the field. Then Carroll eluded a defender and dashed 92 yards down the field for a touchdown. With 6:03 left in the game, Benedictine trailed by eight points, its smallest deficit since the first quarter. Benedictine’s defense
Football continued from >10 down the Rams on a fourth down attempt, giving the ball back to the offense on the Bulldog 36 yard line. Cordell Mattox broke free for 38yards to make the score 14-0 early in the second period. “As soon as I got the ball, I looked straight ahead and there was a wide open hole that five of us could have fit through there. It was the perfect block by the linemen,” Mattox said. On the ensuing Ram pos-
forced a punt and got the ball back at its 47-yard line with 3:14 left in the game. The Cadets moved toward down the field, but not quickly enough. With the final seconds ticking off the clock, Puccinelli heaved the ball toward the end zone. Carroll went up for the catch, and so did three Collegiate defenders. The Cougars (8-2) knocked the ball away, and there was no time left on the clock. But pass interference was called. So Benedictine got one untimed down from the 21 yard line. Puccinelli dropped back, surveyed the field and fired down the middle of the field. Graham Flinn leaped up for the pass. The ball skipped off his hands and fell to the turf. The game was over. “It was just a roller coaster of emotions,” Collegiate quarterback T Brewer said. He’s Thomas Brewer III, but on the Collegiate football team, he’s simply known as T.
He completed 11 of 25 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Benedictine struggled to slow him down all day. Both touchdown passes went to Ayinde Budd (5 catches 104 yards), and Collegiate slowly built a 22-7 lead through three quarters. “He’s been my guy the past two years,” Brewer said of Budd. “He makes plays for me.” When Collegiate couldn’t reach the end zone, it turned to its senior kicker and his booming leg. Jake Johnston kicked three field goals from distances of 20, 27 and 47 yards. The 47-yard field goal cleared the cross bar with so much distance, the kick maybe would have been good from 57 yards out. Puccinelli completed 8 of 11 passes for 153 yards. With the exception of the 92-yard touchdown pass to Carroll, he didn’t attempt many downfield passes. A sophomore, Puccinelli became the full-time starter when Isaiah Anderson left the team at
end of the regular season. With a limited passing attack, Benedictine tried to grind out yards on the ground. It found only limited success. Caleb Grimes rushed 26 times for 117 yards. Ellis Brooks added 10 carries for 30 yards.
Benedictine’s only touchdown in the first three quarters came when Dean Ngendakuriyo intercepted a pass and returned it to the 3-yard line, giving the Cadets a very short field. Brooks scored on the next play.
But most of Benedictine’s drives either stalled, never got started or were pushed back by penalties. The Cadets tried playing Brooks at quarterback on some series, but didn’t find any more success with that formation.
session, Marquea Chennault recovered a fumble. Martin split the defense on the next play and raced 60 yards to give the Bulldogs a 21-0 advantage. But, Ram quarterback Duckworth and his teammates hadn’t made the long trip to Goochland to fold their tent and orchestrated a drive late in the first half that produced the first points of the evening for the visitors. Strasburg opened the second half with another effective drive that ended when Cordell Mattox picked a Duckworth pass and Burton
sprinted 63 yards to set up a Tanner Bradshaw sneak to make the score 28-7. Duckworth crossed up the Bulldog defense when he flipped the ball to running back Austin Miller who then threw back to the quarterback for the Rams’ second score. Mattox returned the favor with a 56 scoring bomb to Dallas Holmes that finally put the game away for the Bulldogs, 35-13. Fowler credited the Rams with an intense effort and their no quit attitude. “They lost their best player at prac-
tice yesterday,” Fowler said. “They got off the bus with 27 players and they played their heart out, most of them on the field for all of the game.” The coach also expressed concern over his team’s stamina, pointing to a string of non competitive games that found many starters sitting out the second half. “The problem with beating people is that your starters come out early, and our kids were tired in the fourth quarter tonight,” Fowler said. With a short week of
school, Fowler said the team will focus on maintaining the energy through four quarters. “Our conditioning needs to be worked on but we have a week to do that, and hopefully, we’ll be better prepared next week.” Mattox said he and his teammates are ready to answer the bell at practice this week. “We are going to run a lot to get ourselves in shape for this game,” the senior said. “We’re looking forward to practicing even harder and we’re thankful to be out there on Thanksgiving
Day.” The victory earns the Bulldogs a third round playoff match up with last year’s state finalist Clarke County, a single wing minded team that challenges defenses with plenty of misdirection. Fowler hopes his squad rises to the challenge, and knows victories are a lot harder to come by this time of year. “They’re big and physical. We’ll have to polish a lot of things and get a lot better. It’s a big challenge for us and we are looking forward to the opportunity.”
