Fund created for children of slain woman Husband allegedly shot GHS graduate, claims killing was an accident By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Family and friends of a Goochland High School graduate found shot to death in her Henrico County home are working to help pave the way to a better future for her two children. A well-respected nurse at Retreat Hospital, Katrina Banks, 35, was found dead by police after they were called to the home by her husband. Her husband has been charged with her murder, but reportedly told rescue workers that it was a tragic Katrina Banks accident. According to a page set up on the crowd funding website You Caring, Banks was “a loving caring mother, nurse, and friend to many people … her legacy, though cut short, touched so many lives.” Banks leaves behind an 8-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter. According to the website, the money raised will be used to help pay for the childrens’ education. * * * Alvin Eugene Banks, who was charged on Nov. 21 with murdering his wife, reportedly ran to a nearby fire station after the shooting see Banks > 3

Fewer traffic deaths seen over holiday Despite an increase in volume, number of people killed down from previous two years Contributed report
According to information released by the Virginia State Police this week, a forecasted record volume of traffic over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend did not yield an increase in traffic deaths across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Preliminary reports indicate a total of seven people were killed in seven traffic crashes statewide, compared to nine deaths during the 2015 Thanksgiving holiday and eight in 2014. The 2016 Thanksgiving statistical counting period began at 12:01 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23, and concluded at midnight Sunday, Nov. 27. This year’s fatal traffic crashes occurred in the counties of Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Caroline, Loudoun and Nottoway; and the cities of Newport News and Norfolk. Two pedestrians were killed in the crashes in Caroline and Nottoway counties. The crashes in Appomattox and Buckingham counties claimed the lives of two teenagers. Of the five drivers and passengers killed, four were not
Banks continued from >1 and screamed to a firefighter: “I accidentally shot my wife. Come on, let’s go.” Banks then ran back toward his home, at which time a police officer heading to the shooting scene spotted Banks and asked him to stop, according to court records. “Mr. Banks stated he accidentally shot his wife and pleaded for officers to go inside (his house),” a search warrant affidavit states. When Henrico police officer C.A. Fornel went inside, he heard a young child screaming in the basement and then saw a woman, later identified as Banks’ wife, Katrina M. To help prevent traffic deaths and injuries during the Thanksgiving holiday, the Virginia State Police once again participated in Operation C.A.R.E., an acronym for the Combined Accident Reduction Effort. Operation C.A.R.E. is a state-sponsored, national program designed to reduce crashes, fatalities and injuries. During the 2016 Thanksgiving weekend, Virginia State Police troopers: Cited 9,594 speeders Cited 2,812 reckless drivers Arrested 137 drunken drivers Cited 597 safety belt violations & 206 child restraint violations Investigated 1,131 traffic crashes Assisted 3,925 disabled/stranded motorists “As we transition into the winter holidays, Virginia State Police troopers will continue our heightened patrol presence across the Commonwealth for the safety of all motorists,” said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. “We are asking for Virginians to do their part, too, by always buckling up, obeying speed limits, driving alcohol and drug free, sharing the road, and not driving distracted. By working together, we can save countless lives on Virginia’s highways this holiday season.”

Alvin Banks, 45, who subsequently was interviewed by a police detective, said he had been in an argument with his wife, according to court records. There were three shell casings found in the home, including two casings near the front door of the home and one near the feet of Katrina Banks, according to a court record, which also states that three bullet holes were found in the living room of the home. As holiday season rolls on, a moment to pause By Roslyn Ryan Editor
I will admit it: when it comes to most things, I’m a bit of a dawdler. So it was certainly no small feat last Saturday morning when I headed purposefully down the front steps of my house, keys in one hand and a carefully written list of errands in the other, at exactly 8:30 a.m. I was, you might say, on a mission. Unfortunately, someone — perhaps maybe Murphy of Murphy’s Law fame — didn’t seem inclined to make it easy on me. In fact, I would say that my “mission” hit its first snag before I reached my car. I realized I had forgotten my wallet, so I ran back in to get it. On the way back out, I tripped
over a doggy water bowl someone had inexplicably left in the middle of the living room floor, sloshing water everywhere. I cleaned that up and made it to the car, but I had the sneaking suspicion that something was missing. It was: my keys. Back into the house I went. By this time, I was starting to get a little peeved. All of that determination to get something accomplished efficiently seemed in danger of being for naught. Once in the car, however, I got my head back in the game. Turning off my street onto the main road, I refocused on the tasks ahead: oil change! Grocery store! Christmas shopping! Go, go, go! Aaaand, stop. Well, not stop, exactly — more like slow down and wait, and wait,
and wait, as some commotion up ahead snarled traffic. Inch by inch, our parade of cars lurched forward, and as the minutes piled up I came to the conclusion that I should have just stayed home. In fact, I am ashamed to admit that it wasn’t until I heard the sirens in the distance that I realized what had happened. Within moments there were more sirens, then the blazing lights of fire trucks and ambulances. Up ahead, as I could now see, two vehicles had been involved in a terrible crash. The first responders — and God bless those people for what they do and the small miracles they perform day in and day out — were hard at work by the time I drove by, and it was obvious that at least one of the drivers had been
badly hurt. All of a sudden, nothing I had on my carefully written list seemed nearly as pressing. It could all wait. It’s easy this time of year to get caught up in the “need to” and “have to,” and allow the stress of creating the perfect holiday to overwhelm us. But it never hurts to take a moment to stop and take stock of what is really important, and how much of the rest of it is simply window-dressing. Here’s hoping you can pause a time or two this holiday season to take a breath, and to appreciate what you have. Spend some time with the people you love, look out for your neighbors, and, most of all, stay safe.
Year after year, magic of a concert remains constant By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Garth Brooks was in town a few weeks ago, and he packed them in for a four-show run at the Richmond Coliseum. As I watched the throngs of fans waiting in line to see the legendary country superstar and his wife Trisha Yearwood, I realized just how long it had been since I attended a concert. With age, I’ve become more of a street festival
kind of guy, and I often see bands in various venues around town. But buying tickets and planning an evening around a concert is something I haven’t done in a very long time. But, there was a time, and I was fortunate enough to grow up in an era of concerts and festivals that featured every artist known to man, all in or within a stone’s throw of Richmond. Trying to list the best of them is a hopeless task for there are too many to mention, but there are those that stand out and pass the test

Oh ho, the mistletoe By Virginia McCown Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardener
Yes, that’s the truth of it. The name itself, mistletoe, comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “misteltan.” In Anxlo-Saxon “mistel” means `dung’ and `tan’ means `twig.’ So mistletoe — if taken literally — means “dung on a twig.”
Mistletoe is food as well as home for birds Many species of bird rely on mistletoe for food in winter. Bluebirds, mourning doves, robins and grouse -- all seek out and eat mistletoe seeds. The trees where mistletoe thrives also serve as homes for owls and raptors. Three species of butterfly depend on mistletoe including the great purple hairstreak. In addition, mistletoe is vital for the survival of honeybees and other native bees. Our planet contains more than 1,000 species of mistletoe, but the one we’re most familiar here in Virginia is the American mistletoe or Phoradendron serotinum found everywhere from New Jersey to Florida.
‘Prince Charming’ or creepy gigolo? What all species of mistletoe have in common is they grow as parasites on the branches of trees and shrubs. In fact, Phoradendron means “thief of the tree” in Greek. A young mistletoe begins life as a sticky seed introduced to a new host tree by way of a bird dropping, hence the name “dung on a twig.” Not a fussy suitor, an American mistletoe can be found within a large variety of trees. Once on its chosen host, the mistletoe sends out roots to pierce the tree and then begins stealing the tree’s nutrients and minerals. Because see Mistletoe > page 6

Mistletoe continued from >5 most mistletoe is capable of photosynthesis, it’s not a true parasite. It’s a “hemi-parasite.” So begins the good life for our mistletoe. There’s no obligatory labour required for survival, thanks to its unwary benefactor, the host tree. Eventually, the mistletoe will grow into thick masses resembling evergreen squirrels’ nests or “witches’ brooms.”

a “basket on high.” So where mistletoe grows often creates a problem for mistletoe hunters. Mistletoe is found mostly in the upper branches of old growth trees. Modern methods in commercial timber harvesting have reduced the numbers of these older, often failing trees. In many parts of the Southeast, the blasting down of mistletoe from its “basket on high” is an old family tradition. Others repel up and down trees to harvest it. The easiest method of obtaining fresh mistletoe is to check with the local vendors at the Goochland or Powhatan a stage in constant motion came alive. The driving beat and fullthroated horns of “Cold Sweat” set the tone for the evening, producing a wave of funk that permeated the soul. A primal thud penetrated your chest, and cold chills went up your spine as the King of Soul solidified his long-held title as the hardest working man in show business. At the end of three sets, you left the show with a pleasant

In the years since those James Brown concerts, I ve attended numerous events that featured some of the biggest names of pop music and culture. And there are some great ones that come to mind. Led Zeppelin at Hampton Coliseum, Bob Dylan at the Mosque, Lovin’ Spoonful at McDonough Gym at Georgetown University and James Taylor in Greensboro are only a small representation of the winners. And only the true locals will remember The Allman Brothers at The String Factory, Fleetwood Mac at UVA, Chicago at the Mosque, The Bruce Hornsby Band at the Tobacco Company and The Showmen at Tantilla Gardens, just to name a few of the classics. Point is, after all these years, I get why those thousands of people waited in line to see Garth and Trisha, and can still appreciate the magic of a good concert. Seeing the excited looks on the faces of fans waiting to see their favorite artist confirms that the simplest pleasures in life sometimes produce the most joy, and, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Goochland’s Calvin Martin (3) avoids a tackle by Clarke County’s Kyle Baylor (9). Martin’s run set up the Bulldogs deep in Eagles territory with the score tied 14-14. Martin also had a key interception.
Second-half rally boosts Goochland to state semifinals By Weldon Bradshaw for The Times-Dispatch
In the wake of victory, Joe Fowler, who’s seen plenty in his time, offered some perspective. “This game was a microcosm of life,” Fowler, coach of the Goochland Bulldogs for 16 years, told his team after its 28-14 come-from-behind
victory over Clarke County on Friday night in the third round of the 2A East football playoffs. “It was hard. We had to earn the things that came our way. That’s what football’s all about. “It was scary at times. People pay money to ride roller coasters for a reason. Sometimes, being a little bit scared is fun. Getting that lump in
your throat, that hole in your stomach, makes you feel alive sometimes. “That game got the juices flowing.” The Bulldogs (13-0) were down 14-7 after two quarters and struggling mightily to quell the Eagles’ powerful, run-oriented single wing attack. They improved their offensive execution after halftime and
made three key defensive stops to — in Fowler’s words — earn another week of practice. On their first series of the third quarter, the Bulldogs traveled 74 yards in five plays, including a 35yard Tanner Bradshaw-to-Calvin Martin connection. They pulled even at 14 on a 10-yard touchdown run by Marcus Burton and Zach
Gordon’s point-after. “Coach Fowler walked with me to the locker room and told me we were going to put the ball in the air more and back ’em up off the line, make the defensive backs a little more worried about us,” said Bradshaw, a 6foot-2, 245-pound senior. “Then we could run up the middle. Once they

Goochland boys basketball gearing up for new season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The Goochland basketball team’s season is off to an unusual start. Due to the Goochland football team’s success in the playoffs, the basketball team is down several players and had to postpone their first three games of the season. But, the Bulldogs are still getting in plenty of work in practice and scrimmages thus far. Goochland has scrimmaged against Fluvanna and Charlottesville, both of which were good tests for the team. “We had some good scrimmages,” coach Preston Gordon said. “The one against Fluvanna was very successful. We went to Charlottesville on (Nov. 22) and it was great for us, because those are the kinds of athletes that we’re going to see in our district and conference. They’re super quick, athletic and can jump out of the gym.” The Black Knights’ athletes are similar to what the Bulldogs will face from teams such as Bluestone, Amelia, Prince Edward, Buckingham
Football continued from >8 get a stop, we’d go around the outside. Then we’d throw quick screen passes over the middle.” The Bulldogs’ inspired defense stopped the Eagles on fourth-and-5 at the Goochland 46 and provided the impetus for a 54-yard drive that ended with Bradshaw’s 1-yard sneak
and pretty much the entire James River District. Another thing that the scrimmage against Charlottesville showed was that with only seven players suited up, foul trouble was an issue. “We knew at that point that we wouldn’t be able to play the games this week,” Gordon said. “I had to make that decision. If we had one more guy to help us out … we’ve got one guy who was intended to play JV, but he’s showing me a whole lot.” The Bulldogs are led this season by seniors Jack Twombly and Joshua Chandler. Twombly, a 6-foot, 5inch player was the second leading scorer for the Bulldogs last season, behind BJ Snead, who graduated in the spring. Despite not playing in the first quarter against Fluvanna, Twombly put up 24 points and followed it up with 18 points against Charlottesville. “Charlottesville had a whole lot more height with size to battle against Jack than what Fluvanna did,” Gordon said. “That was real-
ly good for Jack.” Chandler is a strong presence on both ends of the floor for the Bulldogs and is a lead-by-example player, according to Gordon. “He’s not a vocal guy, and we’re used to that from last year with BJ Snead,” Gordon said. “Josh is the same way. Every now and then, he’s going to say something and when he does, he means it. He’s going to make our opponents earn every bucket.” Juniors Keiston Carter and Quentin Watson as well as sophomores Daijuan Harris, Isaiah Matovu, Nate Southerland, Deion Harwood and freshman Quincy Snead are all going to play a significant role for the Bulldogs this season. Watson had 14 points against Fluvanna and was effective beyond the arc, Gordon said. Matovu is a transfer from Louisa who has been the player that has shown a lot of “guts” thus far in the season and has been solid on defense, according to Gordon. Dallas Holmes is one football player that will be a
big addition to the basketball team once the football season ends. Snead’s prolific scoring output last season won’t be easily replaced this season and Gordon said that it’ll be a by-committee approach to offensive scoring this year. “I think Jack is going to be our go-to guy on offense in the paint,” he said. “Clay Brooks can help us out as
well. Hopefully Deion can fill a bigger gap than what he had last year. He’s looked strong in practice. He’s definitely going to help us out scoring wise. Watson is a sleeper, dark horse, you can’t sleep on him. If you leave him open, he’s going to knock it down and he can drive by you too.” Gordon said that the goal is very simple this year.
“My most important goal is to improve each game,” he said. “We need to stop teams at home and on the road and we’ve tweaked our defense a little bit. Hopefully that’ll help. We need to play smarter and not commit so many fouls. We’ve got to win games in our district and I think for that to happen, we need to be able to stop teams.”
for the go-ahead score. “We put a lot of people on the line,” defensive end Clay Brooks said of the plan to stop Clarke County’s offense. That included Hunter Rogers, who had amassed 2,275 yards and 31 touchdowns through 12 games. “They were pulling a lot. We had to get used to how they played. We made some adjustments at halftime,
moved some people around, and found out what fit for us.” Down 21-14, the Eagles (10-3) responded with a 19play drive that began on their 19, but on third-and-goal from the 10, the Bulldogs’ Calvin Martin intercepted a Christopher Davis pass a yard deep in the end zone with 4:36 left in the game and returned it 20 yards.
“We had them third-andlong,” said Martin, a 5-8, 165pound senior. “Coach told us in practice that third-and-long, they wouldn’t run. Look for the pass. “I dropped back. ... just backpedaled. The Dog backers were up covering the flats. I had everything behind me. The quarterback. ... I saw his eyes. Four minutes left.
Couldn’t come at a better time.” Eight plays and 81 yards later, the Bulldogs had a twotouchdown cushion thanks to Cordell Mattox’s 7-yard run off the right side with 1:04 left in the game. The Eagles had one last chance, but Cole Nuckols picked off a desperation pass to ensure the victory. Goochland ran 37 plays
and amassed 310 yards of offense, 226 rushing and 84 passing. The Bulldogs limited the Eagles to 250 yards on 60 plays. “They’re not built to play from behind,” said Fowler, whose team won state titles in 2006 and 2012. “Our defense played lights-out in the second half. We couldn’t be prouder.”
