Goochland County recently announced that County employees raised $1,061 for the Goochland Christmas Mother this year. Through the support of local businesses and employee donations, the employees conducted a silent auction that raised $1,061. The County would like to thank everyone who supports this important cause. With Christmas less than a month away, it’s still the furthest thing from my mind. It’s an annual dilemma for me, but this year seems more hurried and busy than most, and I’m fearing my procrastination increases in intensity with passing years. And who knows what will trigger that moment when you finally realize that the holidays are here again, and Christmas is right around the corner? As I hurried through after dinner chores and sliced the last sandwich for tomorrow’s lunches, I happened to hear the beginning of “Charlie Brown’s Christmas” on the television in my girls’ bedroom. I quickly tuned the small television in my room to the channel and sat down and enjoyed what I consider one of the many true marvels of the season, the Charlie Brown series. As I listened to the not so subtle messages contained in the classic tale of Christmas, I could only hope the word was getting through in the next bedroom. I can’t imagine anyone who has better captured the spirit, the meaning, the true magic of Christmas than Charles Schulz, the creator and author of Charlie Brown. Shulz made a lifetime of writing and publishing one of the longest running comic strips in America, and his love and dedication for his “Peanuts” characters still tugs at heart strings across the planet. That led me to another realization that — although we are constantly reminded throughout our lives that everyone is replaceable, and our skills are never infinitely unique — there see Charlie Brown > page 6

Though he passed away a few years ago, at the age of 91, I like to think he’s somewhere watching over all of us -- and that maybe, finally, he knows just what a hero he was to so many.
could replicate Schulz’ dedication, tenacity and talent in writing a daily comic strip for more than 50 years, viewed by millions of readers in 75 countries around the world. In my mind, that makes someone irreplaceable and puts one in a lofty category with the likes of Robin Williams. Like many other homes across America, it’s not Christmas here without Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and the crew being involved. In the years since Schulz’ death in 2000, his family has resisted efforts to revive the characters with the exception of one movie. I like it that way, for no one can recreate Schulz’ vision or conception of characters that reflected a life that hits all too close to home, most of them representing real figures in the author’s life.
And, it’s also fitting that after a lifetime of “Peanuts”, and a dedication to one character who never got to kick the football, Schulz died only days after his final Sunday strip ran. In his final submissions, the thought of impending doom snuck into the mind of Charlie Brown, a character who had approached everything in life with a healthy sense of skepticism. ‘’After you’ve died, do you get to come back?’’ Linus asked Charlie Brown. ‘’If they stamp your hand.’’ Man, they don’t make ‘em like that anymore, and thank you Charles Schulz for another Christmas where you provided the impetus for the spirit, and reminded me of that Star and the true meaning of the season — Peace and Goodwill to all men and women.

Puppy raising, with purpose Jenifer Strozier, a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence, recently spoke to the GFWC Goochland Woman’s Club about the rewards of being involved with the program and the incredible impact these dogs have on the lives of the special needs people they are placed with when they “graduate” from the training program. Strozier, here with her dog-in-training, Oatlyn, shared that CCI currently has more people in need of an assistance dog than they have puppy raisers. Canine Companions is a partner organization of GFWC International, and the club has been sending financial contributions to the organization for decades. Seven individuals received word that polyps taken during MEDARVA Healthcare’s second-annual Colon Screening Day were not cancerous. Twenty-one individuals who may not otherwise be able to afford such an important prevention method as a colonoscopy received the important cancer prevention screening on Saturday, Sept.Colon 17
at Stony Point Surgery Center. MEDARVA Healthcare donated the use of its surgery center, equipment and the expertise of its medical professionals. The free colon screenings were part of a partnership between MEDARVA, Dr. Andy Vorenberg of Colon & Rectal Specialists, members of Access Now, Crossover Ministries, and Hitting Cancer Below the Belt. Respected gastroen-

Dr. Paul Charron from Colon & Rectal Specialists, as well as Dr. Jayant Talreja and Dr. Andy Thanjan from Gastrointestinal Specialists also performed colonoscopy screenings. GI Pathology donated its lab and biopsy services for the event as well.
“Because of these free screenings, there are a lot of people who can today be rest assured that they are free of cancer,” said Sally Graham, executive director of the Goochland Free Clinic, which referred patients to Access Now so they can be screened. “A colonoscopy is an easy process and one that saves lives. see Screenings > 9
New ways to dispose of medication could help battle opioid addiction Contributed report
The Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition (RSAAC) for the Counties of Goochland and Powhatan recently announced today that drug disposal kits will be available for community members to discard leftover prescription pills. The kits were obtained by Attorney General Mark Herring as part of a comprehensive strategy to address the heroin and opioid crisis in Virginia. RSAAC was able to secure kits for distribution in Goochland and Powhatan. The biodegradable Deterra drug disposal kits from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals can deactivate and destroy up to 45 pills each with the addition of warm tap water before being disposed of in the trash. See below for a list of organizations and retailers who are giving away the kits for free. RSAAC estimates that at least half of our community does not know how to properly dispose of expired or unwanted medications. Drugs thrown in the garbage or flushed down the toilet can poison our ground water. Families and neighbors need to be vigilant of their medicines to keep them out of the wrong hands. Store them out of reach of children; hide or lock them up if need be. According to the National

Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), 50 percent of people who begin abusing prescription drugs either took the drug from a friend or family member’s medicine cabinet, or the drug was given to them by someone they knew. Furthermore, NIDA’s findings include the following facts about the link between prescription pills and heroin: Half of all young people who use heroin got started by abusing prescription opioids. The number of Americans abusing heroin nearly doubled from 2007 to 2012, with nearly 700,000 now abusing heroin. In Virginia, abuse and overdose deaths continue to rise: Heroin overdose deaths have risen more than 600 percent between 2010 and 2015, from 48 to 342. Prescription opioid overdose deaths have risen 44 percent between 2007 and 2015, from 399 deaths to 576. More than 500 people went to a Virginia emergency room from a heroin overdose in the first four months of 2016, a 250 percent increase over 2015. There are multiple ways to dispose of expired or unwanted medications in Powhatan and Goochland. Prescription Drug Disposal Kits can be picked

Next stop: Santa Land By Roslyn Ryan Editor
F
or David and Bobbie DeHart, Christmas truly is about giving. In their case, however, what their giving can’t be put in a box and left under the tree. Every year, the couple does everything in their power to turn their Rockville Road home into the brightest, boldest, most eyecatching display of Christmas cheer around. And while Bobby insists their end result isn’t meant to rival the homes seen on the annual Tacky Light Tour — the DeHarts are aiming for more of a winter wonderland look, they say — they still have enough lights, inflatables and carefully crafted displays to amaze the many visitors that drive slowly by every night to take it all in. Among the additions to their inflatables this year are a snowman family, a penguin, and a Santa-and-reindeer combo. David says he generally shops for Christmas items all year, keeping an eye out for things that he doesn’t yet have. “If I see something that catches my eye I usually get it,” he said, and he’s been known to source his decorations from both online and brick-and-mortar stores. Of course, the shopping is the easy part. Asked how long it usually takes him to set up the entire scene — which some local residents have begun referring to as Santa Land — David says he usually starts Thanksgiving Day. First the lights go up, then the two Christmas trees, then the inflatables. Once he has everything just about set, he’ll ask Bobbie to drive him up the road and then back toward the house so he can take it in and make sure everything is perfect. So great is his commitment that David has even been known to become part of the scene himself: many times after he comes home from work, he’ll don his Santa suit and stand in the yard, waving at the cars full of kids that go by. “We really enjoy doing it, and we like for the kids to see it,” David said. “That’s really why we do it.” The DeHarts’ Christmas display, located at 2375 Rockville Road in Rockville, is open daily from 5 p.m. to midnight, and 5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., weather permitting. The DeHarts invite anyone who would like to drive through their driveway to do so, but ask that visitors please remain in their vehicles for safety reasons. Ask the Master Gardener
How to rebloom a poinsettia (or not!) By Judith Maly Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardener
Q
uestion: Last year was our first Christmas together and my husband gave me a beautiful Christmas poinsettia. Romantic that I am I would like for it to be our table centerpiece again this year. I have kept it alive even though it only has ten leaves remaining. The holidays are coming so what I should I do to ensure it colors up and looks beautiful again this holiday season?
A
nswer: Oh my goodness. A can of red spray paint is $3.99 or perhaps you could delay your Christmas holiday until February. Articles that start off with “Rather than buying a new plant each December, with proper care you can make your lovely poinsettia flower again for another holiday season” make me cringe. This is sort of in the same category as believing the wedding cake you kept in the freezer for a year to “enjoy” on your anniversary
is not going to make you gag. However, if you are a glutton for punishment, here goes. Poinsettias don’t just turn color magically. They need to be babied, cajoled and convinced. After the holidays, keep the plant indoors in bright light with a few hours of direct sun, until all danger of frost has past in the spring. Don’t let it dry out or stay saturated. Don’t let it get too cool. (Below 55 to 60 degrees.) Fertilize very two weeks. Don’t go on a Florida vacation and forget about it. In the late spring, shape but don’t butcher the poinsettia and put it outside. Repot it. Cut to shape again in early July and bring it indoors around Labor Day. This is assuming you have a beautiful green plant that whiteflies, spider mites and mealy bugs have not killed, and that your plant does not look like Cinderella before the ball. Now it is time to color up! This is the fun part! Your plant needs eight to ten weeks of total darkness for at least 13 hours long every night at 60 to 70 degrees with absolutely
NO stray light. Then the poinsettia should be placed in bright light for at least six hours a day. So for eight to ten weeks plan on lugging it to that empty closet you have no other use for or covering it with a box every day on its schedule not yours. (Darling, we need to leave the party so I can put the poinsettia in the closet.) Start today and you will have a beautiful plant for Valentine’s Day. This year ask for a puppy. For additional information about growing poinsettias contact your local Virginia Cooperative Extension office in Goochland (804)556-5841 or Powhatan (804) 598-5640.
Keep the holiday season healthy, safe and secure Contributed report
During the holiday season, many people do not want their thoughts to stray to anything unpleasant. Although celebrating may be the primary goal come the holiday season, individuals and families also should devote some attention to keeping the holidays safe. Just because it’s Chanukah, Christmas or New Year’s doesn’t mean safety and security should not remain a top priority. The following guidelines can help families enjoy a holiday season that is healthy, safe and secure. Exercise caution when decorating. Decorations can be beautiful, but they also can be hazardous if not used properly. Overloading outlets is commonplace during the holiday season, but that can lead to home fires. Exercise caution around candles and other open flames. Pets may become tangled in wires or knock over glass ornaments. Keep delicate decorations away from harm.
Wash hands to prevent germs. As the cold weather arrives, people may spend greater periods of time indoors or in close proximity to other people. The holidays also are about greeting friends and relatives, and embracing or kissing. Do not ruin the festivities by spreading germs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the holiday season is also flu season. The CDC recommends celebrants wash their hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds to remove germs. Keep track of curious children. Children are enamored with the sights and sounds of the holidays and may be more curious than ever during this time of year. Things adults take for granted can be hazards to youngsters. The needles of holiday trees can cause painful cuts in the mouth and throat of a child who swallows them. Snow sprays may be harmful if the aerosol propellants are used improperly. Peanuts and popcorn used for decorat-
ing can pose potential choking hazards to young children. Be a smart host or hostess. Alcoholic beverages and holiday revelry sometimes go hand in hand. Responsible party hosts know when a guest has had too much and will arrange safe transportation home. Because kids imitate adults, many may drink the beverages they see adults drinking. Alcohol poisoning is a real risk for children, so pay attention to youngsters no matter how young they may be. Protect the home. Deter home burglars when traveling for the holidays by having neighbors keep a watchful eye on your house. Use motion-sensor lights, keep up the appearance that someone is home by having mail collected, and do not advertise any travel plans on social media. Investment in a home security system if need be. MetroCreative Photo Ensure a happier holiday season Make sure to use caution during the holidays to keep children by making safety and health a priority. safe. Disappointed, yes, but not disillusioned described
the coach as he reflected on a season that inspired a community. “This was a special year, because of a special group of kids. They didn’t give us one problem all year and that is rare for a group of 15-17 year old kids,” Fowler said. “It didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but it rarely does in life. They are hurting right now, but after some time, they will look back and realize just how awesome this season was.” Even with the loss, Fowler didn’t hesitate when describ-
ing the efforts of his kids on this particular Saturday and this season. “What an incredible effort by our kids. They battled and played with incredible effort for fortyeight minutes. We couldn’t be prouder of our guys,” the coach said. He also lauded their contribution to a season that captured the hearts of the Goochland community. “They are great representatives of their families, school and community. After the way we looked in
the preseason, I doubt anybody expected a 13-1 season. But these kids bought into what we wanted to do and blocked out all of the outside noise and just pulled together.” Fowler also had kind words for the team that had just ended his season. “Appomattox was a class act. They are a very good team that has a great chance of repeating as state champions next week. We haven’t seen a defense like that since some of those great Gretna teams 10 years ago.”

Goochland suffers disappointing loss in state semis By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer
Players from both teams gathered at the center of the field, arm in arm, for a final prayer after Saturday’s Group 2A semifinal game in Appomattox. The defending state champion Raiders were more than gracious
after defeating the visiting Bulldogs 45-13 and advancing to their second consecutive championship game next week against Richlands. The victory ended the Bulldogs phenomenal undefeated run that almost was — a glorious season that exceeded all expectations. Goochland coach Joe Fowler knew exactly what it would take
for the Bulldogs to defeat last year’s state champion Appomattox in the state semifinals game. “I knew we would have to play a near perfect game to beat them, and we didn’t do that,” he said following a 45-13 defeat at the hands of the Raiders. He was referring to the selfinflicted and uncharacteristic mis-
cues that often lead to short drives that resulted in touchdowns for the Raiders. “We had some uncharacteristic turnovers and that hurt us. More often than not the team that wins the turnover battle will win on the scoreboard,” Fowler said. “Appomattox had a lot to do with those turnovers though. They
were by far the fastest defense we have seen in a long, long time,” the coach added. It didn’t start, or end, well for the Bulldogs who entered the contest with a perfect 13-0 mark. After the opening kickoff pinned the Bulldogs deep in their territory,
