Her mission completed, Christmas Mother now gives thanks By Roslyn Ryan Editor

After wrapping up the major part of her mission as Goochland’s 2016 Christmas Mother, Wanda Taylor is now able to look back at what can only be described as a monumental achievement on her part. But while her own obligations over the past year included a whirlwind of meetings, appearances and other fundraising duties for the organization — which served over 300 families this year — Taylor’s focus last Taylor week was firmly on the many men and women who had worked so hard behind the scenes. “It was just an awe-inspiring process” to work with the Christmas Mother board members, Taylor said last week, just days after the last of the families the organization assists had received their gifts. “The organization of the board was just magnificent—I have never been on a board that runs so smoothly.” Taylor said it was thanks to the board members that she was able to hit the ground running once she accepted the role of Christmas Mother, particularly since it is a job that few know exactly how to negotiate see Christmas Mother > 3

Keeping holiday merry and bright (and safe) Taking a few precautions when decking your halls can help avoid often overlooked dangers By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A

quick tour around Goochland this time of year is all it takes to realize one simple fact: when it comes to holiday lights, many of us say “the bigger and brighter, the better.” But while decking the halls is a beloved tradition for many families, keeping safety in mind can spell the difference between a happy holiday and a tragic one. And while a home’s exterior festooned with lights help create a festive holiday mood, there are certain precautions that should always be taken both inside your home and out. According to Goochland County Fire and Rescue Chief Bill MacKay, some of these tips are simple and

straightforward. “You want to make sure that you have a working smoke alarm and Carbon Monoxide detector in your home,” MacKay says, “and that guests know how to get out in the event of an emergency.” Making sure that your chimney has been cleaned and inspected can greatly reduce the risk of fire, he added, as can choosing holiday decosee Safety > 11

Louisa man’s plea deal ends Brooking case Parrish set to serve 10 years in prison after entering Alford plea By Roslyn Ryan Editor

On Dec. 9, nearly 10 months after Alvin Lynn Brooking was found brutally murdered in his Goochland home, the man accused of killing him learned his fate. Kevin Linwood Parrish, 45, was sentenced to 10 years in prison last Friday, bringing a close to what had been a devastating chapter for Brooking’s family and friends. Brooking’s nephew Tereall Jones, 44, said his uncle was someone “who would have done Parrish anything for anybody,” and shared that his uncle had served as a deputy under Goochland Sheriff John Amos in the 1970s. Family and friends gathered for a memorial service on Aug. 4, the date that would have marked Brooking’s 63rd birthday. In a plea deal that was finalized Dec. 8, Parrish entered an Alford plea to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter in the March 1, 2015, slaying. In accordance with the agreement, Goochland Circuit Judge Timothy K. Sanner sentenced Parrish to 10 years in prison, the maximum allowed. Although no definitive motive was established, the prosecution theorized that Brooking’s slaying was related to a will that was filed five weeks before the death of Carroll A. “Bush” Parrish — a relative of the defendant — that named Brooking as the executor. The will left to Brooking portions of the more than $1 million estate that the

Parrishes thought should be theirs. The case against Kevin Parrish was entirely circumstantial, with no physical evidence such as DNA, blood or fingerprints that connected him to the killing. His attorney told the court that Parrish still maintains his innocence. A week before Brooking was found dead, 11 members of Bush Parrish’s family filed suit against Brooking in Goochland Circuit Court, accusing him of defrauding them. Parrish’s family claimed that Bush Parrish was afflicted by severe dementia and multiple serious illnesses for several years before his death and that Brooking sought to gain control over Bush Parrish’s finances as well as power of attorney. But the court record also includes a declaration by a Goochland physician that stated Bush Parrish was of sound mind and under no “undue influence.” Brooking was Parrish’s primary caregiver during the last years of his life, and he moved into a house down the road from Parrish to care for his longtime friend. Parrish’s mobile home was near the crossroad store he formerly owned at Sandy Hook. It was against that

It was a challenging schedule, especially since Taylor still works full time as an IT Program Manager for the wastewater treatment company ChemTreat, but one that she handled with characteristic grace. backdrop that Goochland Commonwealth’s Attorney D. Michael Caudill, in a summary of evidence, said Kevin Parrish — acting alone — killed Brooking by bludgeoning him in the head with a metal poker inside Bush Parrish’s home. Through cellphone records, Goochland sheriff’s investigators tracked the movement of Parrish’s cellphone on March 1, which indicated he drove to one sister’s home, and then another sister’s, before traveling to Bush Parrish’s former store — near where Brooking was living — to buy beer. Store security video confirmed his presence in the store. From there, cellphone records indicate Parrish drove to a friend’s house in western Goochland with the beer and stayed awhile before driving home to Louisa, where Parrish told investigators he remained for the night. “He was steadily calling people,” Caudill said.

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County However, cell records indicate Parrish drove back to Goochland, and one of Brooking’s neighbors saw Parrish’s truck pull up to Brooking’s home about 9 p.m. The man drove off after getting no answer, at which point the neighbor called Brooking to advise that he may soon get a visitor. Brooking was at Bush Parrish’s home down the road. Brooking told the neighbor that he could see headlights coming down the road and he’d call him back later. When he didn’t call, the neighbor contacted Brooking again and Brooking told him, “We are sitting here talking. I will call you when he leaves.” But Brooking didn’t say who was inside his house. Authorities believe an altercation erupted between the two men, ending with Parrish beating Brooking in the head with the poker he grabbed from a nearby wood stove. There was

evidence of a struggle, with broken shards of a glass chandelier found near Brooking’s body the next day. An inmate who participated in a substance abuse program with Parrish at the Henrico County Jail last year told authorities that Parrish admitted to killing Brooking with the metal poker during an argument. The inmate said Parrish believed that Brooking was going to give him $5,000 as a beneficiary of the will. Caudill said Parrish had lost his job, was living with a sister and was in desperate need of money for living expenses and drugs. Brooking’s wallet was missing when police found his body, and two or three hours after authorities believe he was killed, Parrish paid his drug supplier $200 to $300 for crack cocaine, Caudill said. The Richmond TimesDispatch’s Mark Bowes contributed to this story.

give to the next Christmas Mother, Taylor said two critical parts of the job are time management and flexibility. “I think I would just say to make sure she has an open schedule, and be open to all of the different types of things she is asked to do,” Taylor said. “Aside from that, just be loving — just be open and loving.” For their part, many Goochland residents clearly loved Taylor. Rarely does she make a trip to the grocery store, she said, without someone stopping her to say hello or give her a hug. Concerning those Christmas Mother families she hasn’t able to speak with one on one, Taylor said last week that she did have one thing she wanted to share with them. “I want them to know how much preparation, love and effort went into making Contributed photo sure they all had a wonderful Volunteers help set up the 23 bikes donated this year to the Christmas,” she said. “It really Goochland Christmas Mother program. was a community effort.”

GCPS named among top 10 Va. districts Contributed report

The Goochland County Public Schools (GCPS) were recently recognized by Niche.com as the 8th Best School District in Virginia. This rating is based on a rigorous analysis of statistics as well as student and parent reviews for schools across the Commonwealth. In a statement released by Niche, GCPS “achieved this ranking by scoring highly on a variety of factors including SAT/ ACT scores, student-teacher ratio, the quality of colleges that students consider, and reviews from students and parents”. When determining a rating, Niche ranks various

factors and weights different performance measures. The greatest weight is placed on an academic measure and is 50 percent of the rating. Culture and diversity, health and safety, student and parent surveys, and teacher quality are each weighted at 10 percent. Resources and facilities are 5 percent of the overall assessment, while clubs, activities and sports are weighted at 2.5 percent each. In addition to receiving this recognition as one of the top school divisions in the Commonwealth, Goochland High School ranked in the top 100 of public high schools in the state. Jeremy Raley, Superintendent for Goochland

County Public Schools, attributes this success to the talented employees who work for GCPS and the investment that the Goochland County Community has made in public education. “This accomplishment is made possible by the skills and talent of our dedicated workforce who strive every day to maximize the potential of every learner. In addition, this success is the result of a supportive School Board and community that values excellence,” Raley said. Goochland County Public Schools have demonstrated their superior performance across all dimensions of the total school experience. In

addition to this most recent rating, GCPS is only one of 10 school divisions in Virginia to have all of its schools fully accredited for 10 straight years. On state assessments, Goochland students outperformed the Virginia state average in SOL pass percentage in all content areas. Goochland students had the 6th best social studies scores in the state and the 11th best reading SOL scores when compared to other students in the Commonwealth. In addition, GCPS has received recognition by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for serving as a model for budget development and Kenny Bouwens, a teacher

at Goochland High School, represents the division as the State Technology Education Teacher of the Year. “Goochland County Public Schools is a proud and successful school division that has demonstrated its success as a leader in providing students with innovative and authentic learning experiences that will allow students to gain the skills and abilities that are needed to be successful in a changing global economy,” Raley said. “We are proud of our accomplishments and look forward to continually striving to inspire and prepare our students to make a positive impact in the world around them.”

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

For President Elect, to tweet, or not to tweet? Even in By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Of all the things President Elect Donald Trump has ever been, and will ever be, perhaps the least surprising one is self-appointed king of the Twittersphere. After all, Trump, together with Twitter, a platform that allows its users to simultaneously brand themselves, bully their adversaries, and bypass the media, is a marriage made in marketing Heaven. And if there is one thing Donald Trump has proved even more adept at than social media, its marketing (Exhibit A: the red hat).

So prolific and engaging a tweeter has Trump become, his postulations and provocations are now routinely covered as legitimate news stories. Allow me to be the first to say this: I get it. Tweeting is perfect for reaching those who want to hear the message but are less concerned with content and quality. Those, one might say, who will sacrifice absolute factual accuracy for flamboyance, and prefer to dispense with nuance in favor of a straight-to-thepoint delivery style. Unfortunately, when the President Elect openly ignores specific tenets of our democracy in his tweets (as

he did when he suggested people be jailed for flag burning, which, while a hideously offensive act is still, according to the Supreme Court, protected speech); or taunts private citizens (as he has done on more than one occasion) it would seem to me that he is not communicating in a manner befitting his standing as the leader of the free world. Over the course of my professional life so far, I have had the opportunity to meet many highly accomplished men and women, people who were leaders in their communities and inspired those around them to strive for excellence. I can say with almost complete certainty

that I could not imagine a single one of them stooping so low as to insult or shame someone publicly, never mind throwing a Twitter tantrum in full view of the entire social media consuming world. And there, I suppose, is the biggest issue with Twittering Trump: We have real problems in this country, ones that require far more than 140 characters to solve. If President Elect Trump is going to be the inspiring leader so many believe he can be, he’s going to have to raise the level of discourse The world has enough twidiots. We don’t need one in the Oval Office.

A mission to end problem of childhood hunger in Virginia By Dorothy McAuliffe Guest columnist

The holiday season is upon us and many of us are looking forward to sharing time with our friends and family, giving thanks around tables filled with food. However, one in six of Virginia’s students do not have regular access to food at home. Thousands of children in the commonwealth rely on school meals as their only consistent source of quality nutrition, making the holiday season a time of anxiety and hardship for them. For too many families, hunger does not take a holiday. In many ways, a child denied

basic nutrition is a child denied their basic civil rights. And much like previous attempts to secure equality in the classroom, this problem has often gone overlooked. Teachers understand the connection between nutrition and education — children can’t be hungry for knowledge if they are just plain hungry. Students who eat school breakfast have been shown to achieve 17.5 percent higher scores in math and attend 1.5 more days of school each year, which, when combined, make these students 20 percent more likely to graduate from high school. Today, of the more than 530,000 students across Virginia who qual-

It is clear that the traditional approach of serving breakfast in the cafeteria before school starts is simply not meeting the needs of every family. Breakfast After the Bell models improve breakfast participation because they take breakfast outside of the cafeteria and make the meal part of the school day. It’s no wonder that over 340 schools transitioned to Breakfast After the Bell models last year and even more are making the leap this year. than in 2014. By making breakfast more convenient, we can access the federal funds that Congress allocates to feed kids in need and support the healthy development of the next generation. We are proud of the accomplishments of the last two years. I have joined with our education leaders, child advocates, and legislature in a bipartisan effort to support school breakfast participation, enroll more schools in the Community Eligibility Provision, and expand summer and afterschool meal access at schools and community organizations. see Hunger > 11

defeat, a sense of victory By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

What are the true signs of a champion? I suppose the real answer is the action a team displays when the chips are down, or face the challenge of reacting with class and dignity in situations that seem overwhelming. Most heroes recall situations of seemingly hopeless obstacles where tenacity and determination provided the only glimmer of hope. And, sometimes, champions are measured by more than just a record of wins and losses, graded by a higher, more long-lasting set of standards. Late in July, I began covering a Goochland High School football team that, on the surface, looked good but not exceptional. It’s easy to get spoiled when associating with a team that hasn’t had a losing season in recent memory, and has made more than a dozen trips to the playoffs since Coach Joe Fowler took over the reins. Even in those dog days of summer, it was easy to see that this team had something special, an intangible quality that would not allow them to accept defeat. The season started in late August, and no one, including seasoned reporters, knew exactly what to expect when the Bulldogs opened their season against Essex. The game was scoreless until Goochland’s defense scored two late game defensive touchdowns to record their first shutout of the season. It was only the beginning of an effort that would be filled with highlights, subsequent defensive shutouts see Heroes > page 7

Even more striking was the realization by many of these players that an experience that had shaped their lives for years, and friendships formed on the field came to a sudden stop as the final gun sounded. Seniors embraced each other as exhausted players couldn’t hide the tears of disappointment, and the uncharterestic loss provided the final test for a seasoned group of Bulldogs. In the midst of defeat, there was a sense of victory in the embraces, the smiles through the tears, and the display of class and respect the Bulldogs displayed. Players from both teams gathered at mid-field and embraced one another, resting quietly on their knees in prayer for the family of a fallen Appomattox teammate. Even though the season had ended one game short of a state championship, I exited the field at Appomattox with a sense of pride for the team that provided much more than just victories in its 2016 campaign. I thought back to those hot days in August when no one knew how things would progress. And I listened to a coach

who told his team “I love you guys” after the disappointing loss. He went even further a few days after the loss. “We couldn’t be prouder of our guys. They are great representatives of their families, school and community.” And preseason expectations didn’t mean much to a group of guys who refused to lose. “After the way we looked in the preseason, I doubt anybody expected a 13-1 season. But these kids bought into what we wanted to do and blocked out all of the outside noise and just pulled together.” To an old reporter, it was a special year that featured a group of kids I won’t soon forget. Truth be known, they’ll go on to accomplish much greater things in life than they did on the football field. But, the lessons learned from those early days at GYA and fun and companionship that evolved from hours of practice and game day challenges will last forever for a group of kids who will be remembered as champions. Perhaps, the coach summed it up best. “This was a special year, because of a special group of kids. It didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but it rarely does in life. They are hurting right now, but, after some time, they will look back and realize just how awesome this season was.”

continued from >6 and produced an undefeated season for a group of players who refused to lose. Along the way, I got to know a group of kids that I’ll always remember, not only for their prowess on the field, but the camaraderie and support they displayed to each other. The bonds that tie are the result of years of playing together in a community that embraces youth sports and provides the base for Bulldog teams that aways seem to succeed not only in football, but in other sports and life in general. It’s a relationship that represents over a decade for many of them, playing a sport they love with friends they have known for a lifetime. And, that provided the extra impetus that led this year’s team to great heights, and a playoff run that united a community. Throughout the year, the support of Goochland fans was unwavering, and on many away games the Bulldogs placed more supporters in the stands than the home team. The intensity grew with each victory and three playoff victories prepped the team for a spot in the state semifinals, against a team that many considered the best in the state, Appomattox. The Raiders provided too much opposition for a collec-

Couple has been helping shoppers find the perfect tree for over two decades By Roslyn Ryan Editor

W

hen it comes to delighting the senses and creating lasting memories, it’s hard to top a Christmas tree. And for over 25 years, Sally and Kevin Santmyer have been a part of many families’ annual hunt for the perfect one. Owners of T’is The Season, a seasonal Christmas tree lot and market in Centerville, the Santmyers sold trees for 26 years in Short Pump before venturing out to the lot in next to Essex Bank on Broad Street, where they have been for the past 11 years. On a bright, chilly afternoon last Wednesday, Sally was minding the tented mar-

ket area, waiting on Kevin to return with another truckload of trees. There, surrounded by the intricate stained glass works and wreaths she creates and sells each year, she chatted amiably with a steady stream of tree seekers. “We’ve definitely been busy,” she said, “so we can’t complain.” Santmyer said she and her husband, who once owned a landscaping business in Short Pump, are “very lucky” to have found such a base of support in the Goochland area. Along with the thousands of trees they’ve sent home with customers over the years, they’ve also dispensed plenty of tips on how to care for those trees. A few of their pointers? a fresh cut on the trunk of the tree prior to setting it in the stand. Even if the tree is freshly cut before being loaded up for the ride home, Sally cautions that the cut end can begin to seal back up within minutes. Scraping the bottom of the tree with a sharp knife before setting it up will ensure that the tree is able to draw plenty of water. Speaking of water, Santmyer points out that cut trees can take in between two pints and a gallon of water per day and keeping a tree hydrated is key to preventing it from drying out (they recommend tree stands that can hold at least a gallon of water). Also, pay attention to the water line, she cautioned. If the bot-

Safety continued from >1 rations that are flame resistant or flame retardant (for more of MacKay’s tips, see box below). Lights, it seems, are also important to consider. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, 150 home fires per year begin with holiday lights and other decorative lighting. Such fires may start because of frayed or bare wires, broken or cracked sockets or even loose connections. It’s important that men and women be especially careful when decorating their homes with holiday lights, inspecting each set of lights for damage and discarding any damaged sets. When choosing lights, use only lights that have been certified for outdoor use on your home’s exterior, and never use outdoor lights inside.

Purchasing the right tree is also critical. The Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that Christmas trees are involved in hundreds of fires causing an average of 15 deaths each year. In addition, such fires cause an average of $13 million in property damage annually. Though it can be tempting to purchase the most eyecatching Christmas tree you find, avoid acting rashly until you have learned a little about the tree. Artificial trees should be labeled as “Fire Resistant.” Such trees can still catch fire, but they are more resistant to fire than trees without such labels. When buying a live tree, make sure the tree is fresh. The tree should be green, and its needles should be difficult to pull off of branches, which should not be easily breakable. Tap the tree on the ground before purchasing it. If the tree loses a lot of needles upon tapping the ground, it

isn’t fresh. Trees that aren’t fresh are more susceptible to going up in flames. Though it might seem more idyllic to place your Christmas tree next to the fireplace, it’s a lot more dangerous as well. When choosing a spot for your tree, find a place that is away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators and vents. But homeowners also should know that even trees placed away from heat sources can still dry out, creating a fire hazard even if the tree was fresh and healthy when purchased. That’s because Christmas trees can quickly dry out in heated rooms. Monitor the tree’s water levels every day, checking those levels in both the morning and at night before going to bed. This prevents the tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard, and it also helps the tree maintain its aesthetic appeal through the holiday season.

Fire Chief offers holiday safety tips The following suggestions were offered by Goochland County Fire/Rescue Chief Bill MacKay: Never burn wrapping paper in the fireplace. It may become lodged in the flue which can result in a chimney fire. Choose the freshest tree you can find. Check to see if the needles stay when you gently pull on a branch. After making a fresh cut on the trunk and placing the tree in a stand, fill the stand’s water basin. Make sure you water your tree

Late rally isn’t enough to boost Bulldogs past Statesmen By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It was a classic James River District battle at Goochland High School on Dec. 6 between Goochland and Randolph-Henry. But, despite an early lead for the Bulldogs, a mid-game rally by the Statesmen got the Bulldogs off to a

season-opening loss 60-55. Goochland started the game with a 16-11 lead in the first quarter, but the Statesmen came back in the early stages of the second quarter and the back-and-forth battle began. Randolph-Henry jumped out to a four-point lead, but a three-point play by Jack Twombly brought the

Bulldogs within one and the foul put them in the bonus. A free-throw by Isaiah Matovu tied the game and started a seven point run for the Bulldogs that featured two shots made by Deion Harwood and two more free throws from Matovu. Randolph-Henry answered with a basket to stop the run, but

Quincy Snead added a basket to send the Bulldogs into the break up by six points. Keiston Carter got the Bulldogs off to a good start in the second half with a basket to push the lead to eight points, but that’s when Randolph-Henry came alive. A quick 10-point run by the Statesmen erased the Bulldogs lead

and put Randolph-Henry ahead. Goochland would get back within two points after a threepoint shot by Snead, but a six-point run by Randolph-Henry extended their lead once again. It was mid-way through the fourth quarter and Goochland

Post-season honors for Goochland football come in droves By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Over the course of a season, this Bulldog football team registered more shutouts, gave up the fewest points, allowed the least number of first downs, scored more points and won more games that most of their predecessors. They performed those tasks with a skill and efficiency that surprised all but the people who knew them best, and accomplished more than the experts predicted. It was a team known for its sum, not focused on its parts, but post-season honors suggest some of those working parts excelled in their own areas as 11 members of this year’s Bulldog squad placed on this year’s All-Conference 34 team. This year’s success hinged on a strong offensive line that fueled Goochland’s solid running game. Linemen Josh Clarke and Ethan Kopzcynski provided the base, and made the all conference first team. “These two guys were our rocks. When they finally got healthy early in the season was when we started playing better offensively. They are a great combination

of strength and quickness that is so necessary in our offensive system,” coach Joe Fowler said last week. Also adding to that offensive punch in the line was center Christian Drumheller, also added to the AllConference first team. “Christian did a great job for us at center. It is a huge challenge to snap the ball and then be able to handle the guy in front of you. We struggled with some shotgun snaps before we moved Christian to center and from then on it was a well oiled machine.” Marcus Burton assumed his role as number one running back and carried the offensive load for the Bulldogs. “Marcus waited his turn for the chance to get to carry the ball. He showed flashes as a junior of what we saw this year. He brought a physical style of running to our interior plays,” Fowler said. Lineman Marquai Chenault showed up this summer and pleasantly surprised the coaching staff. “He just fell in our lap in the preseason when he moved here. But from day one we knew he was going to be a big help. He was our quickest lineman and

he gave us some desperately needed size up front,” the coach said. Ricky Mayfield and defensive end Clay Brooks also played a big role in this year’s success and were rewarded with first team honors. “Ricky was a two year starter at linebacker, but moved to the defensive front this year and it paid huge dividends for us. He is a great combination of size and athleticism that helped set the edge.” Brooks, also a first time Bulldog, made his mark on every snap. “Clay is full speed all the time. That relentless play was a constant on Friday nights. He brought a physical presence to our defense and set the tone by his effort.” John King played linebacker and a few other positions for the 2016 Bulldogs, but made the first team for his defensive prowess. “John faced the challenge of playing our outside backer spot that is a hybrid position. Some plays he was coming inside to take on a fullback and others he was out in space covering a slot receiver. He was able to do both equally well,” Fowler said. Calvin Martin also played on both sides of the ball but

rolling. Despite the Statesmen sinking most of their free throws as Goochland started fouling, the Bulldogs were able to keep pace with Randolph-Henry. Two free throws from Randolph-Henry pushed

their lead to eight points, but Snead sank a three-point shot and Harwood stole an inbounds pass and was fouled with 18.3 seconds remaining. Harwood went to the line and sank both of his free throws to bring the Bulldogs

Fowler said his contribution for the past four years made passing against the Bulldogs difficult. “Calvin has been a four year starter for us at corner and capped off an amazing career with a career high five interceptions,” he said. “He is a rock for us on the outside whether he was dropping in coverage or coming up in run support.” Cordell Mattox defined all-purpose for the Bulldogs,

and provided thrills when he touched the ball. “Cordell did some many different things for us this year whether is was on offense, defense or special team. He scored a touchdown six different ways this year.” Rounding out this year’s selections was kicker Zach Gordon. “Zach continued out tradition of excellent kickers. He was steady for us all season long and will only

continue to improve as a senior.” The honors continued at the regional level. Brooks, Mayfield, Martin, Mattox, Marcus Burton and Josh Martin were all first team All-Region 2A East selections. within three. But, Randolph-Henry sank two free throws when sent to the line on their next possession and put the Statesmen ahead by five, with not enough time left for the Bulldogs to come back again.

Twombly led the Bulldogs with 14 points, while Harwood had 13 and Snead had 11. The Bulldogs were effective from the free throw line, going 21 of 32. The Bulldogs dropped its second game of the season in a 55-40 loss on the road to

Prince Edward on Dec. 9. Goochland faced Buckingham on Dec. 13 prior to the Goochland Basketball Invitational at Goochland on Dec. 16 and 17. The Bulldogs will then face Nottoway and Amelia at home.

Ask Fern Dear Fern, For the past 20 years my three siblings and I have taken turns hosting the family Christmas dinner, and it is one of the best decisions we have ever made. We each have our own gifts and talents, and these shine through in the way we try to make the eve-

ning special. My two sisters are wonderful cooks, and my brother’s gatherings are always notable for the fabulous entertainment. This year is my turn, and I want to give my family the best holiday I possibly can. The problem is that I have a tremendous amount going on in both my personal and professional life right now, and I am worried I might not be able to pull it off. Can you offer

Dear Holiday Rushed, Some families have the tradition that no matter who is hosting, everyone pitches in and brings a dish! If this is not your family’s tradition why not consider a caterer this year? For example: While I love to

entertain and host large family meals, it so happened that this past Thanksgiving I was under the weather and knew there was just no way I could muster the energy to cook. To my surprise, my sweet husband took over immediately and came up with what I thought was the most brilliant idea! He arranged to have Whole Foods cater our dinner. It was “take out,” of course, but was a very satisfying, lovely, traditional spread! It was also reasonably

priced, perfectly portioned as to the number of guests he had indicated and absolutely delicious! On the flip side, you may know of an individual who is a professional caterer who could come up with a fabulous menu. He or she could deliver, organize all of the set ups as well as hire a extra staff for serving and clean-up. If affordable, that route could be fun, impressive and well worth the time it would save. Just don’t lose sight of the advantage of
