Local sheriff’s department again among ‘Best for Vets’ By Roslyn Ryan Editor

For the second time in three years, Goochland’s Sheriff’s Department has been honored with the Military Times’ Best for Vets designation. “Best for Vets: Law Enforcement 2017” is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that make an agency a good fit for military veterans and reservists. The rankings are published in full in the issues of Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times on newsstands the week of Dec. 12 and online at militarytimes.com/bestforvets-lawenforcement2017. According to Goochland County Sheriff Jim Agnew, a former member of the Coast Guard reserve, about half of the department has some form of military background. Generally speaking, Agnew said, “We’ve found that people with good military service backgrounds make very good deputies.” He noted that all branches are represented in the Goochland Sheriff’s Department, and that, while it isn’t a hiring requirement, it is something he always appreciates in a potential employee. “Everything being equal, we prefer a vet,” Agnew said. Military Times invited law enforcement agencies across the country to take part in the detailed survey, and evaluated agencies on their military recruiting efforts, service member-related policies, rules for reservists, and department culture. Military Times’ Best for Vets rankings include colleges, career and technical colleges, business schools, franchises, employers, law enforcement agencies and places to live.

This group of Goochland Girl Scouts recently found a way to turn their time — and some funds raised through cookie sales — to use helping homeless veterans get back on their feet. The group stuffed backpacks full of both handmade items and store-bought supplies and delivered the bags to Richmond’s Liberation House. For more on this story, see page 3.

The grant from Dominion will be applied toward the purchase of a new system for digital dental x-rays. “Currently, we are using an older model processor for dental x-rays, and we really need to

upgrade to an advanced digital system,” said Sally Graham, executive director of Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services. “We are in the midst of a capital campaign for a new building, and we would like to install the new system when we are ready to move in. on programs that provide shelter, access to health care and food security in areas served by Dominion. More than 300 applications were considered with selections made based on an organization’s demonstrated ability to serve communities, meet basic human needs and prevent future need. Thanks to some caring young girls, a group of heroes will be having a brighter holiday. The Goochland Girl Scouts of Troop 488 recently held a backpack drive for the homeless veterans at Liberation House (formerly Freedom House) in Richmond, collecting donations and also making scarves. The girls used money they had raised selling cookies to ensure they had enough for each of the 25 veterans staying at Liberation House to get a backpack, scarf, hat, socks and a pair of gloves. They were also able to add a toothbrush, paste, soap, shampoo and other toiletries, as well as a bag of snacks and treats for the Veterans. While the girls had a ball putting the backpacks together and stuffing them full of presents for the men, their troop leaders said, the best part was delivering them. “We stacked the backpacks around a red, white and blue tree that had been donated by a church,” said Myra Greczek. “The Veterans were like kids at Christmas and you could feel their excitement build as they all gathered. Eight year-old Rylee said her favorite part was “when a veteran asked me to pick out a really special backpack for him to have and he smiled so big as I handed it to him!” According to Greczek, one

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

December 22, 2016

Even in sorrow, let the celebration go on By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A quick word of assurance: This really is a happy story. And yet I have to start it by explaining why I was not exactly looking forward to the Christmas gathering my husband and I throw every year for a few dozen family members and friends. Normally, I absolutely love everything about hosting this particular party, from planning the menu to decorating the tables, to inviting random people I

happen to meet in the weeks leading up to Christmas (the more the merrier, we always say). It is a night when the focus is on family, food and fun — in that order — and as long as we have plenty of all three we consider the night a success. This year, however, was going to be a little different. It would be our first holiday party without my husband’s father, who we lost to cancer last January, and to say that his presence would be missed might win for understatement of the year.

My father-in-law was the kind of person who could elevate a simple party to an event that people would talk about for years. Months ahead he would start rubbing his hands together with delight, talking about the dishes we would cook, the side items (never forget the sides!) we would choose, and the people we would invite. He was a man whose boundless, unbridled love for his family (and good food),was never more apparent than at Christmastime, and everyone fortunate enough to celebrate with

him found their holidays that much brighter. While I wasn’t sure if we should have the party at all this year, I knew in my heart we had no choice. We knew what he would have wanted, and it wasn’t a quiet, somber evening spent reflecting on what we had lost. We still missed him desperately, of course, and it wasn’t the same. But we made a special point to try and do everything we thought he would do (enough food to feed an army, enough guests to staff one), so the night felt

like a success. We also knew that if he was watching over us, he was certainly tickled pink to see so many of the people he had loved — and who had had loved him so very much — enjoying each other’s company and toasting his memory. So, you see, this is a happy story about a very unhappy thing. And if you find yourself in a similar situation this Christmas, whether you’re missing someone you lost this year or half a century ago, I hope you’ll be able to tell one just like it.

Making the Midnight Run with Dudley By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

I suppose every family has their own version of my Uncle Dudley. You know, the eccentric one who never quite reached his full potential career-wise, but far exceeded expectations in the game of life. Dudley treated all of his nieces and nephews like his own kids, but that changed for me when I was 9 years old. I lost my father on Christmas Eve 1960, and, from that day forward, Dudley assumed more than just the role of an uncle. He made long and frequent trips from his Maryland home to guide me through some fairly tough and confusing months following my dad’s death, and stayed long after to offer the wisdom normally provided by a father. I would often hear of my aunts and uncles dismay over Dudley’s lifestyle and his “waste of genius.” He attended Georgetown University and was president of his class. Upon graduation, he accepted a big job at the State Department but lasted only two weeks. My mother told me he just couldn’t conform to a 9 to 5 schedule. Dudley drove a Diamond Taxi all of his life, transporting the famous and infamous around the Capitol, and enjoying a job where he was the boss and the schedule his to set. Condemn if you will, but it doesn’t sound that bad to me. The point of this lingering description of Dudley does have a destination, and it’s timely. When Christmas rolls around each year, my thoughts return to the many yuletide memories I have with Uncle Dudley. But, one seems almost traditional and represents my most elaborate and consistent meaning of Christmas Eve. No one loved Christmas more than Dudley. He shopped at see Midnight Run > page 7

Goochland Middle School has selected its November Students of the Month and Eagle of the Month. The students earning honors are John (Jack) Corral and Brandy Sweigert (Grade 6), Bella Drumheller and Jesse Henley (Grade 7); Oscar Correa-Ramirez and Brianna Stackpole (Grade 8); and Eagle Sophie Friedman

Midnight Run continued from >6 every nook and cranny in the Washington, D.C., area searching for the perfect gift for each of his relatives. The result was always unique, trendy and certainly unmatched in any comparison of other gifts received. The process took the eternal procrastinator months of preparation, retrieving just the correct wrapping paper, meticulously scrubbing the 50-cent pieces that would provide his signature to each package for his “kids.” We usually arrived at my grandmother’s house in Maryland on Christmas Eve with a car full of similarly wrapped presents. Our entry always found Dudley in what looked like Santa’s workshop set up in my grandmother’s dining room. He wrapped in a methodical, deliberate method, each end folded neatly with tape hidden under the seams. Problem was, the wrapping didn’t end until well after dinner. And, there was still the delivery, the most exciting part of the process in my mind.

Around midnight, Dudley and I would venture out into the cold Maryland night, load that cab full of presents, and embark on a country dash rivaled only by the fat man himself. A quick dart to Southern Maryland where my cousins were still awake and waiting. Another dart to Alexandria and a drop-off for my sister and her kids. Chevy Chase, Arlington, Olney, Rockville and then finally back to Gaithersburg for the final deliveries at around 4 a.m. Each house left us cookies, or cocoa, or candy for our

Goochland Middle School has named Caroline Webb of Manakin-Sabot its top youth volunteer of the year. Caroline’s community service activity is membership and participation in the Short Pump Symphonette (SPS), a string orchestra founded by Chris Noveli and William Raposo. The SPS plays primarily for residents in nursing homes and for disabled community members. The honor was granted as part of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide youth volun-

teer recognition program sponsored by Prudential Financial partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. By selecting Caroline as its top youth volunteer, Goochland Middle has advanced her application for state-level judging in the 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Prudential will announce Virginia’s top youth volunteers of the year on Feb. 7. Good luck Caroline and thanks for making a difference in the community.

Host Goochland goes two-for-two at Holiday Invitational By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Shortly into the second quarter of Goochland’s game against Blessed Sacrament Huguenot on Dec. 16 in the Goochland Holiday Invitational Tournament, the Knights went on a six-point run that cut into the Bulldogs’ lead.

Coach Preston Gordon called timeout and gathered his players. That timeout proved to be extremely timely as the Bulldogs came out of that timeout and went on a run of their own, establishing a lead that would not be overcome by Blessed Sacrament Huguenot in a 74-40 win. Despite the win, Gordon said

that he wanted to see a little more on the defensive end. “We came out and definitely hit some shots,” he said. “We played a really great game defensively against Buckingham on (Dec. 13). We were looking to make some tweaks and see about doing some things differently against Blessed Sacrament Huguenot and we weren’t able to

do that.” Goochland’s Jack Twombly led the Bulldogs with 21 points, with many of those points coming in the second half. That was largely due to Twombly being held in check in the first half, thanks to the defense being played by Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Chris Gupton.

Gupton at 6-5 matched up well with Twombly, who is the same height. “I was surprised how well (Gupton) played defense on (Twombly),” Gordon said. “But, we talked about Jack’s moves, it wasn’t anything different. He needed to

Roundup: Bulldogs, YMCA swimming seasons underway By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

While the temperatures outside cool, the action in the swimming pool is heating up in Goochland County. The Goochland YMCA swim team participated in the Holiday Classic Swim Meet on Dec. 10 and had strong performances from all their swimmers. Christine Kemmerly dominated at the event, scoring five wins for Goochland. She won the 200 freestyle with a 2:20.84, the 50 back with a 33.32, the 50 free with a 28.23 and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team with a team time of 2:06.24 and the 200 freestyle relay team, which timed in at 1:49.78. Garrett Kemmerly won four races for Goochland. He won the 15-16 200 freestyle with a time of 2:14.17 and the 100 breaststroke with a 1:15.77. Kemmerly was also on the winning 200 freestyle and medley teams. Fritz Kemmerly won the 50 breast stroke with a time of 32.03 and the 100 breast-

Bulldogs continued from >9 make some different moves. Jack was able to do some other things in the second half.” Blessed Sacrament Huguenot and Goochland sparred in the first quarter as both teams were effective from the free throw line as

stroke with a 1:11.73 and was with Garrett on the 200 freestyle and medley relay teams. Grace Kemmerly rounded out the all-Kemmerly relay teams for Goochland. Laura Brown had two wins for Goochland. One win was in the 13-14year-old 100 butterfly with a 1:27.82. She also won the 50 freestyle with a 30.97. Rachel Brown also had two wins, both as a member of two different relay teams. One was the 15-18 200 medley, with a 2:06.24. The other was in the 200 freestyle relay, where the team swam a 1:49.78. Bayleigh Allen was a member of the 11-12 200 mixed freestyle relay winning team, along with Rose Evans, Jessica Valdez and Joseph Hardman. The team swam a 2:08.95. Tyler Davis grabbed a win in the boys 11-12 50 freestyle with a 39.64. Mia Valdez had a win in the 7-8 100 individual medley with a time of 1:34.94. Jared Waters won the 13-14 100 butterfly with a

well as the 3-point line, with five three-point shots falling in the quarter. The 6-0 run brought the Knights within four points, but a three-point play from Josh Chandler and baskets from Deion Harwood, Quentin Watson and Chandler extended the Goochland lead to a comfortable margin.

1:48.08. Emma Ryan won the 25 free with a 23.46. Rose Evans had wins in the 50 back with a 44.14 and the 200 freestyle relay with a 2:08.95. Jared Waters won the 100 butterfly with a 1:48.08.

Sign-ups for the YMCA swim team are open and the season starts Jan. 3. In high school competition, David Tremain won the 200 IM with a time of 2:33.09 during the tri-meet with Powhatan and Patrick Henry high schools.

Payton Harrigal won the Cordell Mattox (all-purpose), Marcus Burton (run50 free with a 25.59. ning back), Calvin Marin (defensive back), Clay FOOTBALL Brooks (defensive end), Josh The Group 2A All-State Clarke (offensive line) and football team was recently Ricky Mayfield (defensive released and it was littered line) were all named first with Bulldogs. team All-State.

Goochland led by 16 points going into the second half and Twombly established himself right away, scoring the first five of the Bulldogs’ first seven points of the half. Two separate runs in the third quarter of 5-0 and 8-0 really extended the Bulldogs lead and made sure the Bulldogs wouldn’t be

denied. Goochland was solid all around as they converted 22 of 25 from the free throw line. On Dec. 17, Goochland faced King William in the second game of the invitational and won 47-39. Twombly had 14 points for the Bulldogs, while Harwood had eight and Quincy Snead

had six. Twombly and Snead were named to the All-tournament team. Gordon said that this invitational every year provides a unique opportunity to grow and become a better team as the season progresses post-winter break. “It’s a fun tournament and we did things differently

this year, with Buckingham being in the tournament,” he said. “We called it an invitational as opposed to a true tournament. Hopefully the next time we’ll see them, it’ll be a championship game.” Goochland had a thrilling win over Nottoway on Dec. 19, scoring 31 points in the fourth quarter to win 62-61. Harwood had 19 points.
